I sent them my salary slip..They removed it from my computer immediately..
I wanna cry.14 -
I got my first job as a programmer... for a salary twice as big as we had at home for four people. I'm f***ing excited!
Wish me luck :)14 -

We keep ranting about managers, here is something good about mine. He increased my salary a 100% of my current. Which is freaking awesome.
That's all have a good day. ☺️6 -
That sad moment when you realize that your salary is less than other employees, the most sad is you work harder and you have more skills.
Life is not fair.6 -
Career Tip:
If the HR asks you to not disclose your salary with others, most likely you are the one getting paid less.
Discuss your salaries. Know your worth.8 -
My non coder friend thinks typing a 1000 line document and coding 1000 line software/app are perfectly equal things and deserves equal salary.20

Today is one of many days fellas! Today my coworkers and I will fight again for more salary! Our company is making millions and billions of euros and we won't be gifted for our work!
I hope in your countries you have the same rights to fight for your money. If so, do it!
Sorry for no Dev realated post's!
TL;DR I have me no money41 -
Im one of the people who got laid off due to covid19. I was hoping to find work at the same salary my previous job paid me at the very least. A friend of mine pointed out the fact that since i've been in the industry a while that I could ask for a lot more than what I made. I didn't believe him, but since my wife agreed, I've been asking for double my previous salary. I actually got a job that met my ask. I'm glad to say that after being afraid I was getting in over my head, I can actually do this. Glad my friend told me my worth and I hope others have friends that can do the same for them.14
-
I love it when companies expect you to care about their vision and act like the work is 100x more important than it is.
Oh yes and of course no overtime pay or decent salary that'd be too much!
😒😫🤯3 -
FYI, you get paid an average of 100k/year working for a business as a dev in switzerland. In india, you'll be looking at an average salary of 5-7k.
Which is less than what you earn in a month in switzerland.
We are so spoiled.16 -

So... I just switched...
2.9 times the previous basic salary, 1.5 times variable pay, one time stocks (conditions are there) amounting to 91% of my previous fixed pay.
I'm happy.1 -
Was working in small startup with great people on new projects, but for very low salary and shitty conditions.
Changed job to big company with nice salary and great conditions, but people are assholes and have to work on legacy stuff mostly.
Guess you can't have everything.1 -
have an interview in 20 mins, this is the last round.. new job has 80% salary hike compared to current .. wish me luck guys!!!13

I met with the CTO of a local tech company today for a beer, at the recommendation of a friend who currently works at the company. They're looking for Software Engineers and wanted to see if I'd be a good fit.
I'm not actively looking to leave my current job, as I love it there. I was just curious to see what other opportunities were out there.
After the beer, he pretty much offered me the job on the spot for $30,000 to $40,000 more than my current salary, along with benefits. When I asked if there was any sort of technical interview, he said that this meeting was actually the technical interview, and that by the time he had finished his first beer, he could already tell that I would be a good fit. He wants me to meet with his Lead Architect and CEO soon just to see if we all click and then we'll go from there.
The only problem is that I really love my current company. I love the work, the atmosphere, the autonomy, and my coworkers. But an extra $30k to $40k per year is a lot of money.
If everything works out and they give me an official written offer, I'm going to see if my current job will counteroffer. I know my boss would happily counteroffer if he's given authorization from the higher-ups, it's just a matter of exactly how much they're able to counteroffer.19 -
Boss told me he couldn't raise my salary, since according to him, I was already overpaid. Months later they suddenly outsource some positions, including mine. I got 6 months with payment as a parachute. But I also got a new job that pays $15 000 more each year...!
It's nice to have double salary for 6 months...
:)9 -
Congratulations on a great year of continuous stress and being successful. As a reward here's a 50 bucks increase to your salary.
Yeah... great.. fuck you!1 -
If they immediately agreed to your salary expectations, either your expectations were low or their expectations were high (or both).
-
That feeling when you finally get confirmation that you got the position you've been waiting for at work, AND get a higher salary than you actually asked for. By quite a lot.4

I accidentally broke our office’s tablet device. Operations manager said it will be deducted from my salary next month.
Few weeks later, my operations manager breaks his laptops touch screen. I almost did a naked run in excitement.9 -

HR: We do offer remote job, lots of benefits and annual increase of salary.
Supervisor: "Oh... Those things HR mentioned? That's just a lie. We're just complying on the government requirements"6 -
so, I hate my job, they give me many tasks (many of tasks are not on my field) with no trainings and no time, plus a salary that is not that good.
I get angry, so I talked with the boss about leaving yhe company.
Well, our discussion ended up by convincing me to stay with the double of the salary.
So, I accepted the offer.
Don't know whether it's the right decision or not..9 -
Resumes don't mean jack shit!!
I just got off an interview call with a candidate for a hardware role. On paper this guy is absolute gold, having worked for some of the best robotics companies and research groups(in India at least) It took me an hour to realize that the was just spitting out buzz words. So I started asking him some very fundamental questions, like ohms law and such.. high school stuff. But, phrased in real world terms. And it took me another half an hour to realize that the guy is dumber than a sack of peanuts!
I can't believe how easy it is for people to coast by on paths paved by seniors and teammates. By any objective assessment this guy would be lucky to get a job as an electrician and instead I'm wasting my time interviewing him for a six figure salary (well, the Indian equivalent). Gaaah!!7 -
Job title: "Junior Application Developer"
Rest of job description: "4 years experience...Career level: Experienced hire/Professional"
Meaning: "Looking for a senior level programmer willing to work for a junior salary."
I hate job hunting.2 -
Even when you might want to work for a non-profit, don't sell yourself too short. Dear developers, I ask you kindly to never accept these kind of salaries.
That entire range is an insult. Esp. with the dev stack in mind.13 -
*senior designer*
Last year I had a meeting with the newly hired Senior Graphics Designer.
She was presenting the new design of the company's website with all the features she wants.
After a few minutes, I asked her, did you design it as a responsive website?
"What is that?" She said. I said that the website should display or have atleast a design for mobile view and desktop view.
And she replied, "is that a requirement?"
Talks to myself: how the hell we hire designers like this?
PS, she earns 4x my salary5 -
A competitor of ours is offering a junior dev role. The base/starting salary is equivalent to mine 😖10

we have a great salary ($400/month) 😂6 -
this is an average salary ***Per Year*** of an ultra advanced experienced software engineer who lives in serbia, europe. the sad part is not that this is per year, the sad part is that this is so much money in this country that if you have this salary *Per Year*, you're one of the richest men in the block.
another sad part is, these $15,000 american US dollars are equivalent to 1.5 Million in our currency.
so basically people are so satisfied with this salary because they are basically "millionaires".
now tell me again, how bad is your salary?25 -

-
I live in zurich switzerland one of the most expensive places to live. And i work as a jack of all trades graphic ux/ui designer/copy writer/marketeer in IT security.
I earn about $3800 a month, but every salery calculator says I should earn above $7000. With a median salery of $9300. But this seems so much money and I suffer from low self esteem. So what should I do? (Quitting is not an option because I like it there)11 -
Competitive pay
This has happened to me.
When startups post job they write competitive pay in thier posting.
Then later after interview they off er you $20/Hr.! And thier excuse we are a start up so can't offer much.
Then why the hell did you just throw that word of competitive pay in job description. Just because Amazon and other companies have that in thier posting.??
Don't you feel that competitive pay is a misused term. Almost all job posting have this. I don't get it. What is the competing with ?? MC Donald's ?
P.S. I have 2 yrs experience and worked with a startup and a full time job. And I am not arrogant about it. But when you ask me to do something I am good at I demand a good price. I respect my work.3 -
Joined my current company as a Frontend Engineer 2 years back. They recently got funded and started hiring with a higher salary range. Not to brag but I'm pretty good at my job with 6yr of experience but my current salary makes me a lower mid-level engineer now and I'm the only frontend guy here.
So, now they're asking me to take interviews of the applicants who are applying for the senior position.
Why do people have to be such an assholes to the employees, man?3 -
Applying for jobs
Apply for anything that looks like I have any kind of shot
Get reply from one company
"Hi. What is your salary expectation?"
"x"
Nothing for 6 days
Reach out again "Hi. I'm guessing you've gone with someone else as I've heard nothing back"
"No your salary expectation was a bit high"
"Okay well, what are you offering"
"47% of X as this is a junior position"
Like...
Firstly, X is what I was making at my last job
Secondly, you can see how much experience I have. You know I'm gonna be asking for 2-3 year money not intern money.
Thirdly, all they had to do after my first email was reply with "That's bit much, here's what we can offer, are you still interested?"
So yea, in general, I hate the salary expectation question. I don't want to sell myself short but I'm also currently in the take what I get position. So if you ask me, I'm gonna tell you what I was last making. I think that was a reasonable number and I know everyone has been hit by the pandemic so I'm not asking for more.
Just advertise jobs with a damn salary range.
You know which jobs do have a salary range? The senior positions. You know who does know how to negotiate? Seniors17 -
For me, the bad part of being a dev? it is the pay.
I know many folks here says the pay is good. But in Maldives, The pay for devs are so so so damn damn terrible. Even freelance.
Average pay per month for devs : ~700 usd
:(14 -
Today, I had an interview with a development company that they request all developers to wear suits for work! From 10 to 7 o'clock, and no stable income salary, they work based on projects LOL!14

Fuck man.. very disappointed now.. 3 months ago i was told not to worry about funding and salary and all, now fucking still waiting for half salary.. fuck startup like this10

The job I am interning at wants to hire me. Yay.
But they want to start me at basic programmer salary, which makes me feel really sad about doing another 1.5 years of specialisation education.
Just to get hired at the salary of what I could have started at 1.5 years ago.
They even keep talking about how competent I am, and how easy it has been implementing me.
I studied to specialise so it would be easy.
Fucking pay the convenience fee.7 -
Dear headhunters, you should start your initial job proposal messages with
"How much is your net salary and what benefits you're currently getting"
Then end it with
"We can make more happen."
Then let's talk2 -

Job offer ==>
We need full stack developer for Java, c#, python, angular, flutter, ..
Data mining experience
Project and team management experience for 7+ years
Salary is 500$ per month12 -
I'm loving my new job. Not for the salary or perks. Just for the simple fact that my developing opinions it's been taking in consideration!1
-
I started working for a company something around 1-2 months ago, they said because I don't have any experience with their stack, my salary will be lower than other team members. I said there is no problem and started my work. My first task was refactoring codes that their experienced programmers have wrote. My second task was extracting data layer from views. (They use Laravel and MVC architecture and they get data directly in views, not controllers). So, by end of the month when I talked with my boss I said I should get more money because I was better than your experienced programmers. He refused my request so I said I will not work with your team anymore :)
Anyway, never accept a job if you know you deserve more money than what they say will give you.
P.S: Sorry for my bad English. English is not my native language5 -

What a sad and frustrating day!
I got a call from recruiter. I told him that I'm not actively looking for change. But he requested for 2 mins to listen. He started telling about his company, how great it is, tech stack, perks, salary etc. He is telling everything but not company name, I waited patiently and asked what's the pay I can expect. The number blew my mind, it's nearly double to my current pay. Then...
Me: that sounds amazing, which company is this, and where is it?
Him: it is <my company name> and located at <my current location, same campus>
Me: .....
Him: so, what do you think?
Me: .... I need some time. Let me update my LinkedIn profile first and then, i will get back to you.
Him: sounds wonderful, will call back by Monday. <Call disconnected>
Me: <inside my head> @$_-$#(/+&_#
This in my 10th year in this company, some one kill me please.6 -
First week is over at my first job in Web development. Really happy about the salary and the company, can't wait to Monday! 😁 though I don't have much time to my private projects, that sucks.3

On Skype.
[tldr: #muhPrivacy;]
You know, people hiring via Skype.
Gaming, seeing family or having long range relationships.
It's become a decent tool.
Then there is the Skype employee.
Opening a court case because in his work time, evaluating Skype calls - ON FUCKING OBSERVING SKYPING PEOPLE - he has to look at too much flesh (as in porn) for his salary level.
Like : the payment category states that you gotta be classed like 1,2 salary categories higher for such work.
So the first instance did not recognise the employees case, because they said its a state thing, or even higher.
Later instance evaluated the employee was right and decreed Microsoft / the NSA (whomever direct employees they are) to properly categorize their employees.
Therefore cost relatively exploded and an algorithm to detect nudity was built.
Wich is operational way earlier than Skypes TOS renewal mid 2018.
That also bans bad language and auto bans given accounts.
Talking about social credit..
in PROC (or prod, as they're known).
And btw: complaining about Google while posting Christmas gatherings on Instagram.. You get what I mean.
Honestly, I don't recall the sources. It's been a while.
I'd really appreciate a little compendium of this for historical reasons.
They will ask: what has brought us here? What is everyone an ultimate right/left/center/agnostic/religious fascist?
And we'll have it on paper. Or papyrus,.. even stone. As I don't know how far mighty people will go for their fortune.15 -
Being paid as a 'junior software developer' at the average salary for that with all these responsibilities
That's a funny joke13 -

Entry level Junior Developer with experience of a Fullstack developer for a salary of an intern.
Can we add unicorns in that list?7 -
I think i made a costly fuckup!
Last month i was called into the cabin of main boss and i believe he reviewed my work and gave me a slight increment in salary.
Only today that i noticed about missing increment in my last month's salary i received last week.
Only thing I'm sure is that i remember feeling happy that day and telling about my increment to my coworkers. They don't remember about it now.
I have no proof if i actually received increment or if i am just hallucinating..
What to do? 😕10 -

Building an amazingly complex system from scratch in Rust means 2 things to me...
1. Really cool tech with great syntax to learn
2. My value as a developer will be going up a lot. In terms of the salary expectations
I really love when I get to learn a new technology, not for a project or course, but to build really cool real-world applications.
That’s what drives me!5 -
Hey guys, I was wondering how much you're paid per month, how long have you been a dev and where you're from.

I told him that I had an offer from another company with double salary. So we discussed the possibilities to have a good raise without changing company. He told me that can't be sure for my salary plan, but he will try to do the best.
I am still working in same company with same salary.
Who was bluffing better? 😑6 -
It bothers me when potential employers *require* a salary expectation in your application. It's like they're focusing on the wrong parts. I don't even consider places that do that, no matter how cool the job sounds. Remember kids, in negotiations, the first one to mention a number loses.5

A great corporate culture, pleasant coworkers, a caring manager, meaningful work, and a good salary. Hmmm. Thank you for reminding me that I have a pretty close to ideal Dev job. I can live with what's missing. 🤠

Hi, what is the average salary of developers in your country.
For me : i'm junior UI/UX designer and front end developer in Paris, working for Parisian digital consulting agency 35hrs a week
Annual salary 30k €
Adding to this :
Daily meal ticket 8,8€
Insurance
50% of transport ticket's price is refunded
And many other stuffs and don't even remember.
Knowing that Paris is an expensive city.
How about you people ?22 -
Companies that expect interns to work for free since they are learning at the job. sincerely fuck off!8

Figured I'd post for some advice here and see if anybody has had previous experience or success with a situation like this.
My team is generally comprised of full-stack developers completing front-end custom work on sites, writing back-end tools, and fixing broken sites. We are a rapid-response DEV team, and we typically turn around any custom requests in less than 5 days and fix any broken sites on the same day as they were reported. We manage almost 15,000 sites across multiple countries, and deal with very large corporations that many of you interact with every day (I'm trying to be cryptic here hahaha.) There are 16 of us on our team, and we are the only DEV team within our department of 500+ people. We are also the only DEV team taking requests from these 500+ people. The way the department works, we are the final say on whether a specific piece of custom work will get completed or not, and we are the go-to people when anybody has a question about our system infrastructure or if our system can accommodate a request, along with how to fix any broken pieces of our platform. We typically get about 150 requests per day. Lately, the entire team has become unhappy with our compensation for the work we do. We're quite underpaid, and they keep giving us more responsibilities without any sort of extra compensation. We've discovered that there are a large amount of non-developers below us that are getting paid more than we are. We've found that we get paid about $15,000 less than a comparable DEV team in a different department (let's call that team DEV_2,) just because of which department our team exists within, and how our department defined our job back when this position was created a few years ago. Ever since the position was created, our team's responsibilities have exponentially increased. We believe that there is absolutely no reason that an entry-level position below us should get paid just as much, or even more in some cases, than a developer. Of course, we're not asking to pay them less. Instead, we've decided that we're going to bring this up with our manager and schedule a meeting with him, our Department Director, and Human Resources, and voice that we believe that we should be on the same payscale as the comparable DEV_2 in the other department.
To be a good developer on our team, you need to not only have coding expertise, but also an encyclopedic knowledge of what you can do within our platform without any coding. You need this knowledge so you can pass it along to any people in positions below you, in case they didn't know that something could be done without custom code.
We're going to argue that if it weren't for our team, the company would be losing millions of dollars in clients, because people wouldn't have anybody to go to for platform infrastructure questions, broken websites, or custom work. Instead, they would need to send these requests to the DEV_2 team, which currently take about 6 months to turnaround requests. Like I said, we are a rapid-response DEV team, and these particular clients think that a 5 day turnaround time is ridiculous. If they had to wait 6 months for their request to be completed, they would cancel their contracts.
Not to mention the general loss of knowledge if the members of our team went to a different department, which would be catastrophic for our current department. Believe me, this department could not function without this DEV team. If we all went on vacation for a week, the place would be on fire by the time we got back, and many clients would be lost.
Do any of you have any experience with a situation like this, and if so, how did it turn out? Thank you!6 -
The 19th day each month is the German unofficial "tax payer day". Because we start working for our own salary, not for taxes...9

Recruiter Expecation:
Must have all the experience of a senior developer, but be content with the salary of a junior.2 -
I have emails which I receive from job sites like indeed and others, mainly because I'm too lazy to unsubscribe.
However, the amount of ads for a "senior" developer is astounding. Then seeing salary range they are offering stuns me everytime.
At least 80% of the ads don't compensate in salary for who they are wanting to hire.
The salary range for these "senior" devs is a salary range for a junior dev or maybe sometimes even an intermediate dev, but def not a senior dev.
If you cannot afford to hire a senior dev, don't advertise for one.5 -
A lot of people posting their goal is a higher salary. So my goal will be to: create a program of value that enables me to collect a percentage of your higher salary.
Why thank you very much!2 -
"We regret to inform that there will be a slight delay in processing the Dec 2019 salary"

Advertise junior level salary then proceed to reject you since they're *looking for someone more senior*

TLDR;
How much do you earn for your skill set in your country vs your cost of living?
BONUS;
See how much I & others earn.
Recently I became aware of just how massive the gap in developers earnings are between countries. I'd love to calculate a fixed score for income vs cost of living.
I know this stuff is sensitive to some so if you prefer just post your score (avg income p/m after tax / cost of living).
I'm not shy so I'll go first:
MY RATES
Normal Rate (Long term): $23
Consulting / Short term: $30-$74
Pen Test: $1500 once off.
Pen Test Fixes: consulting rate.
Simple work/websites: min $400+
Family & Friends: Dev friends are usually free (when mutually beneficial). Family and others can fuck off, even if they can pay (I pass their info to dev friends with fair warning).
GENERAL INFO
Experience: 9 years
Country: South Africa
Developer rareness in country: Very Rare (+-90 job openings per job seeker).
Middle class wage in country: $1550 p/m (can afford a new car, decent apartment & some luxuries like beer/eating out).
Employment type: Permanent though I can and do freelance occasionally.
Client Locality: Mostly local.
Developer Type: Web Developer (True web dev - I do anything web related from custom HTTP servers to sockets, services, advanced browser api's, apps & more).
STACKS / SKILLSETS
I'M PROFICIENT IN:
python, JavaScript, ASP classic, bash, php, html, css, sql, msql, elastic search, REST, SOAP, DOM, IIS, apache
I DABBLE WITH:
ASP.net, C++, ruby, GO, nginx, tesseract
MY SPECIALTIES:

SUMMARY
Avg income p/m after tax: $2250
Cost of living (car+rent+food): $1200
Score: 1.85
*Note: For integrity when calculating my cost of living I excluded debt repayments and only kept my necessities which are transport, food & shelter.
I really hope you guy's post your results, it would be great to get an idea of which is really the worst / best country to be a developer in.20 -
Why don’t you like sharing your salary with coworkers? I tell people exactly what I am paid if the conversation comes up. It helps to know where you stand, i.e. if you’re being under paid or if you should ask for more in the next review cycle.7

some friend asked me today:
is it ok to lie to boss and say that I had a new job offer.. just to negotiate on the salary?

Best: My projects are working, I could get a great salary
Worst: I'm working for a school project and I have no time.2 -

My work experience, knowledge and everything else was upto the mark(exceeded at some places) with their requirements. I was handling full technology stack for previous company.
But while negotiating he declined me salary I asked for because previous company was small (startup with no big name, it shut down after few years) also previous company payscale was low so they offered me increment based on that payscale( which was low compared to salary they offer for same experienced person).
He also hired one more guy who was from big company with same experience, but he got more salary than me. Later I came to know that he knows little compared to me and most of the time manager asked him to take help from me for coding.
Now at the time of increment he is offering me increment with which my salary is still less that the other guy.
I think its time to leave. -
I am torn apart for several months now. My boss and coworkers are amazing people, projects are quite fun and interesting, workplace is close to home and they pay for my exams (step by step reaching for MCSD certification), but...
The salary if fcking low (you could probably earn same ammount while working as a waitress of normal restaurant). Not only for me of course, but still :( Now I am thinking of running to some bank and doing boring programming job coding same tasks again and again, but getting payed very well4 -
I currently have my dream job as a web developer, with a little above average salary, good colleagues and an understanding boss.
Today I had a recruiter contact me with a job opportunity (Senior developer) that would easily net me 1.5 times more salary, and a lot of other advantages.
It almost hurts to say no.4 -
That moment when your company switches developers from salary to hourly to avoid paying anyone more and skirts the new federal requirements.7

My ambition is to develop my own game and publish it, then get a better paying job and to rise above my lazy ass nihilistic order-following coworkers.7

Here in singapore, we developers are super under-appreciated, pm always get the credit. and our salary are never decent. is this a global thing or just us? please share18

The senior developer on my team is leaving, and I'm dreading what's coming down the pipe. Basically everything he's responsible for now will land on me when he's gone. I guess now would be the time to reevaluate my salary.3

TLDR; time to look for alternatives
Had a negotiation appointment with our CTO recently, due to the fact that I am going to finish my apprenticeship by the current year. As I heard from colleagues that the average pay for a finished apprentice isn't really the best, I wanted to try myself at bargaining it a bit higher.. So we went into the meeting and I brought up my argument, bossman just shrugs it off as laughable and that he can do it 100x better, so why should I define my pay on that.. The appointment was just very uncomfortable after that, no appreciation of my efforts at all. Not like I already work like a normal employee just with a quarter of the pay 😑2 -
I applied for an unknown job.
Email: you'll be taking Junior Developer
Interviewer: We need fullstack developer with a salary of $100 for two months of training and $450 if you have great accomplishments9 -
I kept asking my manager for a salary rise for about the last 2 months and he didn't do anything about it so I searched for a new job and I found it! I noticed my manager that I am going to leave, he promised that starting from next month he will increase my salary... Aaaand he didn't...
So I decided to increase my own salary by reducing the working hours lol.4 -
Why do German companies hate paying interns decent wages?
I just had an interview for an internship at a decently funded startup, and they proposed MINIMUM WAGE as a salary. Acted like it was the most normal thing in the world, too.
I do have a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering and some actual working experience as a developer, yet they suggested they’d pay me even less than that if they were legally allowed to. Is that their way of saying they don’t want me after all? They did invite me to a second interview.
I get that interns generally aren’t as productive as senior devs who spend years on a certain project, but minimum wage? Fuck that!
Luckily, they’re just the first company I talked to, but I do feel a little offended.15 -
I lived to see this ... I asked for a salary and the recruiter doubled it . I remained speechless . I didn't bother to ask why i just accepted it ...2
-
I asked for increasing my salary, she said they can allow me for overtime for getting more money like increasing my salary (They asks overtime everyday btw)1
-
A client I've been working with was supposed to pay me for $710, a pay for my two-month work for two of his projects.
He called me today saying that he could only pay $179 and that I need to wait for my unpaid salary. This guy is a friend of mine and he lowkey gives me access to his Netflix account, so I don't really know how to feel.
Do I get mad? Do I laugh it off?
Any same experience here?10 -
Are you willing to share details of your salary, or for contractors your daily/hourly rate? If you're not, that's interesting to know too.
Interesting to know;
- Currency (hopefully obviously)
- Location of work (or if remote, primary location of employer?)
- Contract type (FT/PT employee, contractor/freelancer)
- Job title (or general activity for contractors)
- Number of years in role/contracting
- Whether or not you would or have shared your salary with a co-worker (perhaps you're willing to share here but not with a co-worker)
- Gender
The 'Why is it soooo taboo to ask co-workers salary?' question made me think about this (https://devrant.com/rants/1557306/...)10 -
I've just came to the end of my probation in a new role... Been told I've passed it already... But just raised an interesting typo in my original offer letter....
Instead of saying a
"pay increase up to £#####"
it says a
"pay rise OF £#####"
Upon completing your probation
So in half a mind to ask when I'll see my salary more than doubled like the offer letter says!3 -
Why do people, especially online influencers make such a big deal about having gaps in your work experience? I have never faced any issues finding work due to few months of gaps in between my work. I think considering the nature of our work, everyone should take at least 2 months off every year or every 6-8 months. That could mean taking leave or just quitting job and taking some rnr and then resuming work in another job. Also, what this deal about your next job asking about your last salary?! I mean, if you interview me and if I am right fit, what does my current expectation has to do anything with my last salary?10

Fun fact. I work for a 20-year old company that does software which mostly does print outputs. 95% of our clients actually use it specifically and exclusively to print their invoice runs. There are over 25 printers in this office, 5 of which are within chair-rolling distance of my desk.
I don't know how to use or fix any of them. I must be a *really bad* developer. >.<3 -
Update on the previous rant(regarding office laptop stolen):
Company says there might be some deductions in salary. Trying to negotiate with them .

How do you ask a co worker about their salary? Heard from one of our new hires that he asked for considerably more than what I started at, but I'm not sure if he was referring to his base salary or total value of compensation. It would boost my confidence considerably if I knew what I could be asking for. Hell even getting that as a starting would be quite a step up.18

I was talking with my mom on messenger and right after the moment I told her to stop believing in advertisement and not clicking on everything on the net... I saw a job ad on Instagram

(which is a pretty good salary there, the avg is around 900euro/month)
me: *clicks*2 -
Frustrated... had a signed job offer disappear right before start date after jumping through a ton of hoops, turning down a competing offer, and wasting 3 days of PTO on their process, so back to interviews again.
How do you all determine what salary to ask/look for? Current job has pretty concrete pay bands that I'm pretty sure aren't market, but most of the site (glassdoor, etc) are all OVER the place, as titles can get so fuzzy from one place to another. From people I know I've heard everything from 20k less than I make to 70k more than I make (moderately high COL area, but not CA level). Levels.io seemed promising, but the one FANG offer I had didn't nearly match up with there, so I'm not sure how much of that is bluster or whatever... Blegh. I absolutely hate job hunting.6 -
My Technical lead always asks one question to new interviewing candidates. "Write a SQL query to find the second highest salary from employee salary table". It's the same question which he faced in one interview and he didn't have answered it.

Few months back I got a decent increment as a token of appreciation for my good work.
Yesterday we all received a Special townhall meeting invitation.
We all were wondering what it was about. Now my colleague who sits beside was guessing that it may be about a salary revision and she complained that she didn't get any increment last time.
Inner me: Why the heck company should increment your salary for the shitty work you do.
You are simply incapable of doing what you are supposed to do.
You spend more time talking crap rather than trying to learn and use it to write some non shitty code.
You should be thankful to the company for not firing you.1 -

[Background]
Back in September I joined a startup after my first job in MNC for about 1.8 yrs as a fresher. I always wanted to learn, but the experience in that MNC was not at all fruitful. So ai decided to join a small/mid size company or a startup. To my luck, I got in this small startup in a week after my resignation as a front-end dev (always wanted to be).
It's an automation company, so you can find software, electronics, even mechanical engineer.
The team was almost a year younger than me. It was a team of around 12 people, in which 5 of them were from Business development.
The tech team was too driven and knowledgeable. Always trying new stuffs and motivating to do the same. I was highly motivated by them in my initial days, watching them working on new stuffs.
So I started with revamping their website completely in Angular 4, and did it in around a month or so, being new to Angular. Outcome was pretty satisfactory. I wanted to work on new projects, but just to get the cashflow in they started getting in WordPress projects. It was frustrating, I wanted to work more on new technologies like Angular, React, etc...but just for the survival of the company I had to work on WordPress, so to respect their urge to get going I kept working on 3-4 projects in parallel, and mind you the clients were from hell !!
Fast-forward 4 months, I am still working on few WordPress websites, and one internal GPS based project in React. And I haven't received my salary for past 3.5 months, since the company is still struggling with the issue of funding and getting money from clients. I kinda liked working there because there was lot to learn even though they are so young, but I had bills to pay too.
And I am in dilemma to leave the company or not, because I already stretched 3 months out of good will and guilt of leaving the company in high time. So i finally let the CEO know that I cannot stick for any longer. And i was done with the false promises of getting the salary "next month" everytime. All the money getting inside of company was invested heavily on the product we were building and no one was getting the salaries. Others were fine since they were founding members too.
Long story short : I finally left immediately and now working in a good company as a React dev. I hope they do well and I would love to see them grow, but please *STOP* making false promises and hold on to employees on a lie.1 -
My friend went to upper management for a rise for one of his underlings.
He said he have been relentless and in the end he walked out with 10% rise for himself and nothing for his guy.2 -
When you're asked about your salary expectations and answer with "45k a year" and the head of engineering that's interviewing you looks like you just asked for more money than he's currently earning, then you're probably applying at a startup.2
-
Man, got a call today from a company in Hawaii to do a job similar to what I'm doing now. The salary was 50k less than I'm making here in the states, not even joking. There goes my dream... 😞2

Even after 3 years in the industry, I still constantly feel like I am extremely underpaid... It doesn't help that there's shit ton of below average companies trying to hire. For me, it seems like the job scene is flooded with bad companies and I can never get connected to the right company. So, I compromise and take crappy jobs with crappy salary. I thought by now I'll be earning 6 figures but here I am living paycheck to paycheck. So much for high promises of high paying developer career. Not that I got into the industry for the money in the first place, but it would be great to recieve the salary I think I deserve... It's not like I am asking an impossible amount...and then the managers wonder why I put in the paper.. I mean wake up! It doesn't take much to keep your developers happy.. what the fuck is wrong with these companies..3

TL;DR: what salary would you give a mid or senior Symfony fullstack dev. What would you ask during interviews?
We're currently looking into hiring a fullstack Symfony dev, focus on frontend. Expirience wise it should be a mid to senior role, as I'm the only other dev. We're looking for someone remote, so don't really care where they're comming from.
What salary would you deam apropriate? And what would you ask them in an interview? Any other things to consider?16 -

Do you worry about getting fired all the time? And does it look bad in your resume if you got fired vs if you have resigned from a place? And what's with the new employer always asking about your last salary? Why should it matter? I am constantly worried about increasing my salary not because I need the money but because I feel like if I have a bigger amount right now, then when I switch, I can get a better hike. I don't have a near-future plan of getting hired by a large company. I like working in smaller startups and products. But is your last salary that important on getting a good hike? and does getting fired vs quitting make any difference in your future interviews?
I guess, I am constantly filled with anxiety about my future job security and I wanna make sure that I have all my bases covered. But with some gaps in between my jobs and having a history of getting fired once from a company, I am constantly worried that I won't get a good offer if I leave my current company. Even though I have been getting job offers constantly, but I am scared to leave my current company because I wanna make sure I work in a company long term this time because for some reason it's a big deal for companies if you switch too much.
What do you think? Have you switched your jobs a couple of times? And are things like last salary, time spent in last companies, and gaps make a huge impact on your future offer?5 -

Seeing the US pay for IT people compared to UK and damn the difference is insane. Given the UK healthcare is free, I wouldn't see its usage until old age, and the costs of US vary greatly but most places US pays a lot. For e.g. Airbnb in US pays graduate IT people 200k USD starting while the highest I've seen for IT people in London is 46k GBP, which even after conversion is waay less, and the tax amount if about the same if not more in UK. Maybe I'm wrong but this is what I've seen, maybe I should consider moving to the states :/.6

Imagine your company would spend 100$ more per employee to rent a bigger, nicer office. Imagine how much additional space you'd have there. Maybe individual offices for everybody, or at least not more than two or three employees per office? Telephone booths for long calls, or a library to work in absolute silence, to do research, or to study something new there.
How would that affect your productivity and overall happiness? How much better you'd feel there? How much more relaxed would you be? How much less sick days would you have, and how much money would your company save resp. make more due to higher productivity?
Or would you rather have a salary raise of 100$?4 -

It is really nice to be in this Industry I think. Currently I am writing on my Bachelors Thesis and applying for my first full time Job. I was invited to interviews by every Company I applied to. Except of one that hasnt answered till now, the 4 other companies wanted me to work for them. After kicking the 2 bad ones (first has only the legal Minimum of Holidays and the other one wanted to pay me extremly low), I have to contracts in front of me. One paying me a Little less but has 3 days more off per year and the other one paying me better and they let me talk About more Money earlier. Both giving me a new Notebook, phone and a Bonus depending on the total earnings of the Company. I am really struggeling which Company to choose bu I think free time is much more worth than a Little more mony5 -

Bossman called me up the other day, asked if I had looked at courses and told me I should think about signing up in September.
Thing is, I don't have a degree or anything beyond a high school diploma, since I'm self taught and got hired because of my ability to learn fast and my portfolio, and I told them I'd consider looking at a two year program.
But I don't want to have to be doing coursework after work, and besides, if I do a course, I want to do so because I wanted it... Sad thing is, yearly review is coming up in a month and I worry my salary is gonna stay where it started... Which is not great :S
Any thoughts?5 -
So I'm about to get a job offer
For some context, I live in a low tax country and my gross salary is 56k (incl bonus). I take home about 3600 per month. And there's a 10% bonus
Next month I have a raise to 61k and will take home 4000.
I just finished a few interviews with a very interesting company in another country and the recruiter says they are offering max 66k.
Problem is, it's in a high tax country (Sweden) . So that 66k means take home pay of 3600... That's a 9% pay cut over what I will make starting next month.
Now I'm not sure how to approach this. I calculated what I want (10-15% raise over my current - next month's - salary and the number is *way* higher: 90k.. This means take home 4600 (15% increase)
I also calculated what it would take to match my employer and even that is much higher at 77k.
The recruiter asked me what they would need to offer me for me to accept and says max budget is 66k. This is of course after I told him 66k would net me less than I make now...
There's also the possibility of working remotely (as a contractor I am guessing) from where I am, and I think in that case the 66k would net me roughly the same as my employer, but I'm not sure as there might be additional costs.
But being a contractor means the employer doesn't pay any tax contributions for me, right? I calculated they would be paying 22k tax (on top of 66k salary) which as I understand is freed up. If that's the case maybe I should be asking for more (as contractor)?
How do I approach this? Anyone been in a similar situation?18 -

Many years in the same company waiting for an improvement in my career. Result: role change from Solution Manager to ICT consultant (better before) and Salary increase of 20% (better now). I simply do not understand my company behavior. Happy and Sad at the same time. What do you think? Titles do matter or not?

Do you guys feel like your current salary fits your current job and your actual tasks and responsibilities?
I for example feel like my previous job was overpayed for what my actual responsibilities were and that my current job (being the first dev in a fresh start-up) is overwhelmingly underpaid for what amounts to way more and bigger tasks and responsibilities than I had at my previous job. But I'm nonetheless more happy with my current job than I ever were with my previous one.5 -
