Anyone have a Sacred Code regarding unattended computers at work? We love pranks in my office, but we also have a strictly adhered to code if someone needs to leave their PC unlocked to run a script or something. I've threatened to murder people who tried to mess with people's PCs who were running things. The Code is very important.5

Working with the Intel Edison. My god that thing sucked. So the thing ships with this tiny custom yocto Linux with almost no common packages the default repositories. Getting basic tools like Git and Vim were a task on its own, let alone getting the latest version of Node running. Another company Emutex made a Debian distro for it called Ubilinux but they never planned support or updates and officially took it down a few months ago. Both the Yocto build and the Debian build shipped with the 3.10 Linux kernel and upgrading it without breaking it was nearly impossible because they monkey patched device support into it rather than making a patcher. The team at Linux responsible for the Edison released 3 broken versions of the MRAA library in a row, crippling my code for weeks before I realized what they had done. The hardware hasn't received a refresh since it came out and only 1.4 GB of the 4 GB on the device is actually available.
It may be fine for hobby projects but please don't ever try to prototype a commercial product on it. Fuck the Edison and fuck Intel2 -
I really think @dfox should add a disclaimer that said "please don't post any images with programming jokes you found online, we've heard and seen them all" every time somebody registered, it's they're becoming pretty annoying.
Seriously, I've seen the wife that sends the husband to get milk joke almost every day I've scrolled through this...
And I'm not even gonna talk about those titles, I've ranted on that already.3 -
The JS Drinking Game:
1. Think of a noun.
2. Google "<noun>.js"
3. If a libary with that name exists, drink!16 -
happy new year! what do yall have planned for this year? I'm thinking about writing me up a miniature jarvis to automate my Web Development business, nothing really special just automated invoices, website installs, calendar, contract signing, etc. where all I have to do is type up a requirement list and code2

School: Do you want to learn programming?
Me: Yes.
School: Do you want to learn about operation systems and networks?
Me: Yeah, sounds cool.
School: Do you also want to learn basic electrophysics?
Me: But I will rarely need it if I become a SE.
School: Well too bad!8 -
A friend and a co-worker who prefers loneliness and interact only required.
Comes to office morning, connects to WiFi, looks at the mobile, keeps scrolling and laughs for an hour(quite in nature). This is what his been doing since month.
Curiosity among colleagues, we took his phone and found neither WhatsApp, nor Facebook and not even 9gag. His browser history had all dev problems googled..
Then, the day came, when we asked to him and the reply was...
DEVRANT(heard by all for the first time)..
Now many of us into devrant busy reading, ranting and laughing.
The outsiders unaware of such app might look at us think weird.. perspective and awareness matters..4 -
I had a coworker who was quite socially awkward.
When one of our female coworkers got pregnant and began to show, he got up from his fresh, walked over to her in the middle of the office while she was trying to work and said "I love your stomach. Every time I see you I want to rub your belly." He then turned around and went right back to his desk and resumed working.
Many 'did that really just happen?' looks were exchanged.4 -
I hate it when people post pictures they found online here and instead of trying to actually write something decent, they instead write the exact same quote/description that's in the image, it makes this look like fucking 9gag.
If you're going to post something that's not yours, at least try to come up with a decent message otherwise it'll just look like you're hungry for ++ and don't have the imagination to come up with a decent post.
Idk if that's just me or not but got damn does that trigger me.
Oh and since I'm at it, happy holidays and everything, I'm not that lame 😛3 -
# Showing code so everyone knows it's the same code/file being executed.
Interesting in the difference of the time it takes.8 -
PM: Page load times are up. It might be your API blocking requests.
Me: Possible, though most of my load testing was performed against a random sample of requests at nearly 5 times the expected average per minute rate. I can add some logs but I think this is a red herring theory.
PM: Yes add logs, and New Relic and get it released ASAP.
Me: To confirm, you want me to make a bunch of diagnostic changes to a mission-critical API the day before Holiday break...
I felt like that guy from the Apollo 13 team warning Gene Kranz that the LEM was not built for this and I can make no guarantees... Released an hour before we went home for the weekend.undefined finest hour friday releases fud hang on to your butts on call empathy failure is not an option -
At an expensive Apache Spark training class. For hands on portion you use their system. When everyone logged on, their system couldn't handle the load. First they blamed the hotel wifi (even though every other site was running perfectly) and then they blamed AWS. It's clearly an issue with their system. It's ridiculous to not be honest with a room full of developers who know what's up.4

SO: How to ... in JavaScript without jQuery?

I'm thinking of opening a small onsite web development class for teenager (maybe between 10-20 yo). The problem in Indonesia is most of us learn programming language at an older age, maybe because of the language barrier and lack of good tutorials in Indonesian language.
I want to change that by teaching them early, so that in the future, Indonesia can contribute more to the world of software and web development. Maybe even create new JS frameworks.
JK. ;)
But I don't know where to start. I mean, I've never even posted any article or tutorial (I'm not good at writing). How do I develop the curriculum? I've thought about creating a web quiz, but what do I write? How do I make the material?
Has any of you ever done this?8 -
- Merging 300 files from one branch to another in TFS.
- No merge conflicts.
My first thought:
This can't be right. I must have done something wrong...3 -
