3D modelling, UVs, texturing, animation, video editing, compositing, motion graphics, motion tracking, 2D animation, and a fucking powerful render engine? Check.
Great community? Check.
Powerful and easy scripting system? Check.
A well organized dev team? Check.
People who care about UI/UX? Check (look at Blender 2.8).
Does it compete with a major corporation that would go into sloth otherwise? Check. (If you thought M$ was shaftware wait till you see Autodesk)

There are other FOSS projects that I really like, but my vote definitely goes to Blender.

Just did an internship test for Autodesk and came away from it with the conclusion that I'm really stupid.
May as well give up on my dreams.

Is it just me or does changing the theme on Notepad++ to Deep Black make everyone's code feel like it has the complexity of Autodesk Maya?

Autodesk + Linux is such a goddamn clusterfuck.

Firstly, they only release RPM builds for Maya, and say that they officially support RHEL and CentOS only.
No support for Debian, Arch, etc. What. The. Fuck.

Fine. Okay. Corporate policy. I can live with that. I use alien to convert the RPMs to DEBs on my ZorinOS installation and then found a script which does the installation for me. Cool.

Installs with a few library fuckups. Okay, no problem. I added the missing library versions (ancient libpng and libtiff). I run it. It throws up with some error involving licensing.

Upon searching it seems that Maya 20-fucking-17 can't handle the "new" consistent device naming system (the one which renames eth0 to enp1s0 or whatever). WHAT THE FUCK. Okay. Found a way to disable that. No effect. It's doing the equivalent of a boot loop with the same error.

Wow. This is the leading player in 3D content creation software :/

(As an aside, I did try to install Fedora 28 but it keeps failing with a TPM error. Yay for Linux distro quirks).

Conversion rates and shipping make it awfully expensive to get official t-shirts here in India, so I decided to experiment with t-shirt printing till the time I can earn enough to donate directly to open source foundations.

I call this design "FUCK YOU, AUTODESK!!"

Not too bad, but the print could've been better. Time to start tweaking things.

Blender3D

Probably the most feature rich, frequently updated oss for computer graphics ever.

The project really captures the spirit of open source, most notably with it's open movie projects.

It does have a pretty steep learning curve, but taking the time to lean it is totally worth it. Not to mention comparable Autodesk software will run you thousands of $$$

I started fully exploring different aspects of tech in a middle school technology class where the teacher gave me a good grade as long as I did something that could be useful or interesting. I learned how to design webpages by playing with inspect element, and then decided to make my own with Notepad. One of my friends showed me how to use Sublime Text, and I found that I loved programming. Other things I did in there included using two desktops with NIC's wired directly to each other with an old version of Synergy and a VNC server, and at one point, I built a server node out of old dell Optiplex desktops the school had piled in a storage room.

Last year in high school, I took a class on VB.net and made some money afterwards by freelance refreshing legacy spaghetti, and got burned pretty badly by a person offering $25,000 for a major POS to backend CMS integration rewrite. The person told me that I had finished second, and that another dev had gotten the reward, but that he liked my code. A few days later, I was notified through a *cough*very convoluted*cough* system of mine by a trigger that ran once during startup in a production environment and reported the version number as well as a few other bits, and I was able to see that *cough*someone*cough* had been using my code. I stopped programming for at least six months straight because I didn't want to go back.

This year in high school, I'm taking the engineering class I didn't get into last year, and I realized that Autodesk Inventor supports VBA. I got back into programming with a lot of copy-paste and click-once "installers" to get my modelling assignments done faster than my classmates. Last week, one of my friends asked me to help him fix his VB program, which I did, and now I'm hooked again.

I've always been an engineer at heart, but now I'm conflicted with going into I.T., mechanical or robotical engineering, or being a software developer.

A little long, but that's how I got to where I am now. (I still detest those who take advantage of defenseless programmers. There's a special place for them.)

It's amazing how companies like Autodesk and Adobe see Linux as some "toy". When we talk about Linux we are talking about a professional workstation. My entire company uses Linux (currently Fedora 39) on its workstations, and all of our servers use FreeBSD. Not because it's free, but because it proves to be better than the alternatives to what we produce. We pay for licenses for JetBrains, BricsCAD, MATLAB and I still happily pay STEAM to play my Civilization, Doom Eternal, CS2 and I use Proton to continue my adventures in Diablo and Star Craft, all PAID. Adobe and Autodesk, be ashamed and instead of talking about market share, admit that you do not have competence.

Im considerig switching to linux because:

My macbook does not support mojave and the new ones are expensive af.

Windows 10 is bloated and not a great user experience(removing stuff from the control panel and adding it to the very stripped down settings app, privacy etc..).

I love open source software

However i did not used linux for a long time, back then i used ubuntu and SUSE.

My considerations:
Debian - because .deb on them haters
OpenSUSE - because i used it in the past and it seemed very stable and fast
Arch - i heard from a lot of sources that it’s “da best”

My use case is game development and 3D modeling. I use gimp, blender vscode and unity (the game engine) at work i sometimes use autodesk stuff (motionbuilder, 3ds max) because of fbx.
For audio stuff i use audacity

So overall i’m looking for a distro that is fast, lightweight, i can develop on it (mostly 3D stuff) and occasionally play some games

Anyone has experience with the mentioned distros? What distro would you use for this?

If I could get a $ every time that Unity or Autodesk 3D Max crashes...

Goal for 2019

- finish project I started in Q4 2018 and launch website with it
- maybe find some non invasive way to monetize this and earn some money

If I got time and power left :

- learn more autodesk fusion,
- design robotic arm using above tool
- print it in 3d
- program it with ROS arduino/rpi
- put it on some wheels
- make it driving around my flat
- make it pick up stuff for me

Initially,I used codeacademy in highschool, because my school didn't offer a programming class, just web design and cad. Never got into the web design class, so I took three years of Autodesk AutoCAD in highschool​. I took the HTML course on code academy and thought it was alright. Ended up going to a community college not knowing what i wanted to do. I'm currently on track to getting an associate's in CS, because I was told the school said they were sunsetting the cad program. Finishing up my capstone project and presenting it in two weeks.

There is program called autodesk fusion 360 and those nutcrackers who made it. Did so that no matter how manny cores your computer got it only runs on ONE! Frustrating!!
