Teachers!
Why can't they just leave me alone!?
I was using my laptop. (Linux) and I have it set up so that I do basically everything from command line.
My teacher then walks by (he was checking on people) then he sees me.
I was using a split terminal setup with a client web browser and nano open. (I was taking notes)
He sees this and like all teachers, he immediately decides that I am hacking.
So.. I saw him and was like "fuck.. this will be interesting"...
To keep this short,
I got in trouble then he spent for ever telling me about how much trouble I could get in for using "that thing" (a terminal)..
I have lost hope in all teachers..
This isn't the first time too..33 -
We should make a website called something like:
"ihavenothingtohide.com"
It's just a web crawler that shows you everything you have ever posted on all your accounts and hopefully shows embarrassing posts first.46 -
"Learn Linux in under 15 minutes!"
"Learn python in an hour!"
"Become a pro hacker with these simple steps!"15 -
Ok..
Why do teachers tell students that HTML and CSS are outdated "programming languages" that nobody uses and that big companies (like Google and Twitter) use stuff like Google sites or WordPress or wix??? Do they want kids to fail?21 -
I have discovered how to make cool ide images. I don't remember the website rn.. will post the link in a bit.48

Someone just came in to the store and asked for new mouse batteries because the cursor on their screen was too small..
Because those things are somehow related....
Old people confuse me.6 -
Wow! Apparently DevRant saves custom images for every rant!
As far as I can tell, these can be accessed by adding "/image.png" to the end of your rant link!24 -
On my old computer, my parents had the admin account, and I had a restricted account (because they didn't trust me yet). I really wanted an admin account so that I could install virtual box and some other stuff. So... My solution, I made my own uac prompt that would email me the password, then launch a random program. Then I used the password to log in to the admin account and give myself access. #HACKERKID!
.. also, sorry Mom.44 -
I just found out that my dad wrote the http library (that is still used today) for Comcast... And not just that. He wrote it in notepad on an old ass Windows machine without a compiler on a vacation. (It apparently worked first try)22

My school has every port except 80 and sometimes 443 blocked.
But their webfilter allows you to click "close this message" and continue to the blocked site.
I don't understand their priorities..20 -
I just finally finished (almost) setting up my new arch install!
Here is some info:
Os: Linux
Distro: arch
Desktop environment: Budgie
Terminal: hyper
Icon pack: numix square
Hyper theme: Nord
Brackets theme: Nord
I am missing other stuff.. but whatever.
I got the background off some random redit post.43 -
So.. this is what happens when programmers are given crayons and paper..
We write our robot's source code out by hand and use it as a table cloth.15 -
My parents both have cs degrees
So they don't think I am that special.
But my mom is also one of those people who ask me to help them with googleable questions.2 -

For anyone that goes to a TVDSB school in Canada, you can gain access to admin account by following the steps:
1. Enter your username
2. Put your hand on the Ethernet cable (do not pull yet)
3. Enter your password
4. Press enter
5. Wait 1.5-3 seconds
6.unplug the Ethernet cable
7. Wait
8. Plug in the Ethernet cable when you are at the desktop screen and all app icons have loaded.
9.enjoy full admin access!!61 -
How can people be so dumb??
So I am sitting in a class taught by the teacher from one of my previous rants (the one that got mad at me for using a terminal).
I was working on a new project and I had to look something up. I opened up my browser (chrome incognito)
I was searching in ddg with a dark theme and chrome had a dark theme. Another student beside me asks if I am on the "dark web" ( stuped comment #1.. )
My teacher then starts freaking out that I am doing "illeagal things " and tells me that I will be arrested...
What
The
Fuck????
There should be a "don't be dumb in tech" class for teachers.14 -
I have learned that Android autocorrect changed "vim" to "cum"
What message are you trying to get across Google?17 -

Help!!
So.. I am currently stuck beside this really annoying kid. He is constantly calling me a hacker. And he is trying to force me to teach him how to "jam a raspberry pi" ... So I tried to explain that it would be illegal to do that (I was assuming that he meant jam wifi or something) he wouldn't listen to make and started yelling at me and (uncomfortably) touching me. Then he calmed down and went to hacker typer and started trying to 1up me /my skills. Then he started telling the entire class that I "suck at computers" and don't know anything just because I started ignoring him.
This continued for an hour.
Now we are supposed to be working on a project together over Google drive. I only gave him suggesting permission so that he couldn't mess stuff up. He then noticed this and he is yelling at me and trying to grab my laptop and press random buttons.
The laptop is a Chromebook with developer mode enabled.. so pressing random buttons could wipe my drive if he presses the right stuff.
So you should understand y I am so protective of it.
The teachers don't care.. at all.
What the fuck can I do to get back at him???35 -
I need to step up my game.
I was at work, and some old guy came in.
He said he needed to quickly check a password before we started working on his computer, and he opened up a full msDOS prompt and started a custom password manager that he wrote in basic..
It had a ton of graphical stuff built in and could hide / show logins with various keyboard commands.
Quite impressive.3 -
More robots have arrived! (Teams 5024 and 6856)
Conveniently, one of our robots is putting out smoke and the other has a bunch of broken sensors.29 -
I accidentally pressed CTRL+S in vim. Then I was really confused why everything just stopped working..
I should remember how Linux works sometimes.6 -
Mr. hacker kid from one of my classes has just upgraded his 1337-ness
(I'm pretty sure this is illegal in Canada)25 -
I have a whole new version of "works on my machine"
I keep saying "it worked on this robot" we have two robots and one of them is wired differently. It really messed with the code...2 -
I guess I have waited long enough. It's time for me to start showing off my various devdesks.
This is post 1 of 2
Today I just finished cleaning up the "programming corner" of the robotics shop.
Here is where I do my robotics work almost every day. It is an amazing place to work and hopefully some more setup upgrades come soon.29 -
Just finished my new desk setup!

Story time!!!
(Disclaimer: I did not actually make a bomb)
So I had this amazing teacher in grade 7 (he gave me an Arduino for free) and he also let me and the annoying kid from one of my other rants use his storage room as a makeshift makerspace.. we had a raspberry pi cluster and more Arduino and that we could dream of having.. also cool stuff like leap motion controllers...
One day he was out sick and had this strict supply teacher in. The two of us went in to the storage room at lunch break and started working on a doorbell for the room.. I was doing some circuitry..
The bell rang and we left..
The next class, the supply teacher and the principal walk in and ask me to come out into the Hall.. I am like "fuck" ..
She and the principal start yelling at me about making a bomb and burning down the school and other outrageous things.. she started telling me about kids that got swatted at school for making bombs and that I was in big trouble..
The whole time I am like.... Wtf are these people talking about???
Then eventually they start asking me questions that I didn't understand.. and they ask if Dan (other kid) was doing it too.. I said yes because I was hoping that they would bring him out.. he might know what they are talking abt..
He then comes out into the hallway and they start yelling at him..
Then I realize..
I think that I left our makeshift battery pack on..
So I go and check.. sure enough, the battery had just shorted out and melted the plastic (which was giving off the smell that she was talking abt) so I unplugged everything (and electrocuted myself)
So ya.... I made a mistake and I got a unfairly harsh lecture about it..
Lesson learned.. don't let stupid people see you do anything computer or circuitry related....8 -
Someone should make a messaging app called the "insecure messenger"
It's main purpose would be, to be that opposite of something like signal or riot.im
The app would let you message your friends. But it would transmit messages over plaintext using http.
Then there would be a second screen that shows a basic Wireshark (or tshark) output so that you can see your plaintext messages being sent and received.
But of course.. someone would download the app without understanding what they are doing and get their shit hacked..22 -
Dartlang has now tied with lua for my favorite programming Language.
And the flutter sdk is my favorite tool / library
Good job Google .
Also.. My first app is in the google play store. I will make a post abt it soon.12 -
My dad got a job at TD (bank)
We where talking about their computers and stuff. Then we started talking about passwords.
Keeping in mind that this is a bank....
Here is their password rule:
6-12 char long
All lower case
Only letters and numbers
(Passwords are stored on a legacy system)
Why?
Why should I trust that bank??
And also.. how do they expect to be extremely secure??10 -
Windows? U ok?
I also can't open any apps. This is why I hate school computers. They are so buggy.16 -
Since it is now the hot topic to talk about, here is my input.
The new python change is a terrible idea.
We should totally start a community python fork that stays 100% up to date with master, but removes that one pull request8 -
Kill me...
At school @desjna and I are working on a project where we have to make a website.
In wix.
I just said "fuck that, I'm doing it in HTML / css "
Also.. this is in the class with the teacher that thinks I'm hacking... My go-to web-dev environment is tmux with green text and black background... This is going to be "fun"
Predictions on how long I can make it without him flipping at me?14 -
StopBuildDay has come.
After 6 weeks of non-stop programming, our main bot is in the bag.
Now, for more programming..9 -
You know your robot "works" when the motor controllers are reporting a hardware error and the wifi doesn't work.5
-
So there is this new rule in my class...
"No cellphones in the classroom.. they stay in your locker"
Everyone in the class starts trying to negotiate so that they can still text...
I am like sitting at my desk thinking:
How am I supposed to use 2fa??
So.. ya that proves that I have different priorities than everyone else..
Anyways.. how am I supposed to use 2 factor authentication????
Any suggestions?
Is there an Android Wear app or something?14 -
For anyone that was too lazy to read all of @linuxxx's post. Here is a short summary. we are working together to create an informational website about online (and possibly offline) privacy. If this interests you, keep an eye out for updates from either me or @linuxxx13

DEVDUCK ADVENTURES 0x00
Sir duck the first has ventured outside of the box...
Anyways.. merry Xmas from me and the duck!10 -
Well. Guess who missed it again..
Anyways, it's my belated devrant anniversary!
Since last year I have gained ~20000++ and met a bunch of new people here. So, I would like to thank @dfox and @trogus for this great platform!
Also, a quick recap of robotics (the only interesting thing I do) since last year:
We had a great build season, and built a robot that got us in the top 5 or 6 (I can't remember) at our first competition, top 2 at our second, and quarterfinals at our third!
Thanks to everyone for the support throughout the season!15 -
DEVDUCK ADVENTURES 0x03
Sir duck the first is hanging out with me and @hyperlisk at the FRC 2018 kickoff event.7 -
My teacher says that the only types of image that exist are bitmap and vector.
He taught us abt bitmap (badly)
Then he skipped vector and said "just google it"8 -
It happened.
I have gotten 100% on every Google foobar question.
I just have to do the cryptography thing, then I'm done.11 -
I am being absorbed by the wonderful world of Tic80.
I am currently making a maze game. I will post the game cartridge binary when I am finished.5 -
Want to be a pro Linux hacker? Just type this one simple command!

Thank you to everyone that is helping out with devCredits!
I honestly didn't expect people to bother contributing.. but apperently I was wrong.
For the people already working on it, check the readme file for a Todo list if you want something to do.
And for the people that want to help or just saw that this is a thing right now, check out my recent collab for info.

Opinion:
I feel like the word "code" is way too overused and more of a buzzword. There are all these sites that say "learn to code using HTML in 2 hours!" Those titles are great for getting people interested but I feel like they hurt the "reputation" of the word.
There are so many people that come to me and say they are HTML coders and know the entire language. But then they can only make a site that says "hello world" with maybe a link and a colored background.
Also. Can these sites please explain that html isn't really programming and is more like fancy documentation? Html + CSS may be Turing complete, but they aren't programming languages and in my opinion, shouldn't be treated or referd to as such.
If the message you got from this is "ewpratten doesn't like front end web development" , you are wrong. I think it's great.
Anyways.. what are you guys' opinions on this?9 -
Just discovered that all FRC robots have open ftp and ssh ports..
For future reference:
When ssh-ing into the robot, use username "admin" and pressing enter three times in a row at the password prompt will skip login and you will be root. The entire device is Linux / BusyBox based.
So.. the question is, why? Why would they open up root ssh on a robot?23 -
Anyone else here a ham radio op, or know Morse code?
I'm currently re-learning Morse, and doing some preliminary studying before I take a ham course later this year.11 -
A question for @dfox (and anyone else who feels like awnsering)
How many of us do you recognize by our username?? Or how what usernames do you see enough that you could list them without checking devrant?
You obviously know @linuxxx and other people with that many ++
But do you know smaller people like me
Or even smaller people like @hyperlisk175 -

A continuation to @n3xus's post.
My only Chinese reseller / eBay experience is getting these two arduinos for about $3.50 CAD . Worth it. And only slightly scared of them catching on fire.10 -
So someone gave me an idea today.
I am about go start going to school again soon and someone suggested having a locker competition.
My idea is this:
Have an lcd screen mounted to the outside. It will display a link. The link will be to a Twitter page specifically for the locker.
When I open the door it will tweet that the door was opened using a different message every time.
When I haven't opened it for a few minutes it will start tweeting about how it is getting bored and start tweeting jokes or something.
Also LED strips..
Does anyone have an idea how to power this? Also I know that it is dumb. Too bad, I am doing it anyways.21 -
"or you could be a real hacker with custom vpn designs and shit. But that's only for real hackers"
Do I need to say more about this class?5 -
Load-in time at our 3rd robotics competition!
I will make sure to post more details and a livestream link when I get to the hotel.3 -
A quick non-dev rant..
So. A few of you may have noticed this in my devrant "about" section.
But for those who don't know, I have this disorder called "CAPD" or Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Well actually, I have something called "SPD" or Sensory Processing Disorder but the capd is the worst part.
Basically what it does is, I have a very hard time properly reacting and comprehending various sensory inputs including hearing.
Anyways.. enough about what it is. Let's get to the ranting!
I am so fucking done with capd! It is so annoying. I will be working on a project by myself or something and someone will start talking to me. But I can't fucking understand them!
My right ear has the most problems so if my left ear happens to be blocked, like wearing headphones, it's like everyone is speaking a different language. I can't figure out anything that people say.
This gets really fucking frustrating because I don't usually tell people about this. (Because going up to someone and saying "hi my name is ____ and I have this Disorder" is really weird). So since I at a new school where only like two people know this, I get yelled at for not paying attention and other random reasons. Nobody actually wants to hear my explanation. Also I usually resort to texting people (even when they are sitting beside me) because then I can actually understand the conversation on the first try.
Yes.. this makes my social life very awkward.
Anyways.. I am mostly annoyed right now because it has been getting really bad recently.
Help me plz..
Seriously.. any suggestions on ways to make my life easier?
If you are wondering what having capd is like, I'm going to put a link to a great YouTube video about it in the comments.31 -
Internet privacy isn't actually about privacy. It's about choosing which company/person you are going to give all your data too..15
-
It's almost time!
I am almost ready to release new devRant client and the full version of the api wrapper that powers it.
While I finish up a few things, here is a quick explination of what / why the client is:
The devRant client is called:
dr
The reason I made yet another new client is:
I wanted to have a CLI client that could run on a chromebook and I also discovered the cool text editor called ed. I really like the command-based interface of ed, so I made a devRant client in that style!
dr is a simple and (mostly) no BS devrant client built for us cool cli-only people.
(yes, this was written in dr)
More info will come soon!13 -
Im currently on my way to a week 1 robotics competition with FRC team 5024.

And.... It draws too much power.. God dammit.5 -
I am in the process of completely rewriting a robotics codebases due to efficiency problems. And oh. My. god. The code is hell..
Allocating a new section of memory just to store a simple class in a loop that runs once every 20ms.. who thought that was smart??
Having piece of code that stole control over hardware from each other? Because "that will never go badly"...
Anyways. I am about half way through and very confused how this code was able to run.. -
My introduction to computers was sitting in the family room on the floor with my dad, we had an old Dell laptop running Windows 94.
I remember him taking this weird square thing (floppy drive) and putting it in to the computer. He then said something along the lines of "you might like this" then he started up a game.
It was my favorite game (until club penguin came along)
It is now my second favorite game (Minecraft wins)
An image with weird pixelated graphics popped up on the screen.. it said "Commander keen". He started a new game, and I was instantly hooked.
After a while, I found this blog that had a list of cheat codes and I began to stack codes in various ways to find glitches and stuff.
It was very fun.
After that, I started learning how to use dos and then I used virtual box to run Linux. And eventually, I started learning python.5 -
I just installed a firewall on my phone and immeasurable Facebook asked to Access the internet.
The thing is, Facebook is disabled through my apps settings anyways.8 -
!dev
So I am really light sensitive.
I woke up and went downstairs to go eat some food. But somebody left some lights on.
So.. I walk into this room, not realizing how bright it was. Then within a few seconds, I was uncontrollably crying and on the floor because of the pain. Then I managed to crawl over to my desk, grab my phone, and crawl into a dark room (with my eyes closed). Then I just sat there staring at the wall. Eventually I turned my flashlight on and covered it with my hand, then increased the brightness until my eyes adjusted.
It sucks. This happens almost every morning. And also when I step outside.
Any suggestions to help make the effects worse?16 -
Fuck chrome os!!
I was just trying to install arch Linux in chrome os using a crouton patch that someone made like 4 years ago... That was a bad idea.. so I have spent the past 30 mins creating a sketchy patch to the patch just so I can get a fucking arch install...
I deserve some pizza17 -
I FINALLY GOT STICKERS!!!!
Thank you to @dfox and @trogus for the stickers and an awesome community that has mostly taken over my social life.6 -
No!
I won't fix your printer, and me working on your computer has nothing to do with the fact that you lost all your Facebook friends!
Oh. And while we are at it, your new TV has nothing to do with Gmail looking different!2 -
Is having friends something that I am actually supposed to do?
It just occurred to me that I don't have anyone that I would call a good friend.13 -
DEVDUCK ADVENTURES 0x02
Sir duck the first has equipped his trusty php cape and is helping me work on devCredits.
(I think I need more caffeine)7 -
Fuck this!
I am working on this project for school where I am building a simple 8-bit keyboard thing.
It works for about a day. Perfect.
I was about to put it all away and leave for the day. Then it starts playing random notes and doing random things on it's own.. I was like WTF!??!!
I just unplugged it and put is away (I was too lazy to fix it)
Now I am back at it again and have taken the entire thing apart and rebuild it 2 times.
Then I find the problem...
I forgot to ground a button.
Fuck.
So now I am just sitting here staring at a wall and have completely given up on it.
Btw.. you can check out my mess of undocumented code on GitHub
Ewpratten/ArduinoKeyboard3 -
After this, I absolutely hate Google.. They sent me an email telling me reasons why I should be using Gmail.11
-
While everyone here is talking about ads on devrant, I actually really like it.
I have never seen an ad that looks as nice as this. It fits the site theme!
I think that as long as they remain unintrusive, ads here are totally fine.1 -
So.. I found out that there is an os built on node.js
https://youtu.be/-5tak0tHqIg
I'm not sure how I feel about this.
Your thoughts?8 -
I know this kid who goes around bragging about the fact that he leaches torrents (I think that's the right term) and he puts his "botnet " in the torrent so he can infect other computers.
Considering his computer skills look like he watches "how to hack a website with cmd" videos, I doubt he actually does this. In reality he probably watched a video about it once and thinks he is a pro.
Or maybe I completely underestimated this kid and he has a really powerful botnet that can take down Google.
(Ha also says that he runs a "dark web forum " and he doesn't use tor to connect to .onion sites)
</ random story>4 -
I wonder..
Do the new devduck capes say "devrant.com" on the back? Or do they still say "devrant.io"5 -
TL;RD: bla, bla, another ranter showing off one of their projects.
Hey guys!
I know many of you are pihole users and also like hacking around with software. So I figured I should share this here.
I discovered that there is a (somewhat) secret pihole api. It allows for a ton of cool stuff. So I started writing an API wrapper for it in python and published it on pip.
Its not finished yet, but it you would like to check it out, it's available on my GitHub, here:
https://github.com/Ewpratten/...2 -
Update on my quest for encryption!
For the (large number) people that don't know, I want to use encryption for (almost) everything / actually give a shit about internet privacy... And I want it done by 2018.
So.. here is my progress so far:
I have signal
I now have an @tuta.io email.
I have a complex, long password.
I am using blankslate.io instead of Google docs (except for school)
I run important stuff through Tor or a VPN or both
I have a firewall running on Android.
Any more suggestions on what to do or things to change??
(@linuxxx)37 -
Everyone has been doing various " DevRant * reveals "
I wonder if anyone will start doing a name reveal.53 -
Having a bad day...
Also. My teacher said to press "the button above the 8 " so I pressed f7. But he got mad because I pressed the wrong button. He meant the " * " key. Apperently it is it's own button??5 -
I present to the world:
A c/cpp "compiler" that never compiles without errors.
https://github.com/Ewpratten/eco
Now.. I never said that the code was pretty, or documented, or made any sense, or worked properly. I just wanted to share this little project.
Feel free to add funny error messages to the "errors" list.12 -
I have a tendency to be on devrant, then close the app, then immediately open it again for no reason, then repeat.
Is this a bad thing?2 -
OpenCV is so cool!!!
I am working on a project where I get a servo (with Lazer) to follow an object.
It's so easy to do!
I was expecting a lot more work, but I was wrong! -
I have been having bad luck...
First, windows kept wiping my arch drive.
Then my phone got fucked up in the middle of rooting so I had to reflash Android.
Then after I successfully rooted, I accidentally turned on bootloader lock which dissabled booting in to any mode (because I modified system files).
So then I had to reflash again.
Then I had problems because Knox is a bitch.
So I reflashed again. (It finally worked).
Then I tried installing arch again and fucked up my graphics drivers.
Then I installed Arch again and it finally worked!
But then I was modifying settings on chrome os and fucked up my Chromebook's graphics driver.
Then I had to reflash my Chromebook and put it back in to developer mode.
Then my phone started having permissions problems so I had to reflash it again.
So I have concluded:
Technology doesn't like me.
At least my arch install looks cool and my Android launcher looks like this:15 -
Here is my collection of microcomputers and stuff... I have quite a few and don't know what to do with them...
List:
Arduino uno
Arduino pro mini
2x Arduino pro micro
Raspberry pi B+
USB to serial interface
Some random Arduino interface
What should I do with them?9 -
Hey guys. I have a question.
What Linux tools do you use daily?
Here is my list:
Ssh, scp, netcat, neovim, Gradle, frcmake, gcc, clang-format, python3, pip, wget, git, hub, code, gitkracken, wine, gqrx, gnuradio, rtl_tcp, aircrack_ng, ftp, chromium, crostini, crouton, chromebrew.
I'm probably missing a few. I am curious to see what you guys use.13 -
Hello DevRant!
so... I have this project for school... we have to choose something that we are interested in and learn about it. then we have to make something for our "end result".
so the topic i chose is looking at how computers actually work (basically learning x86 assembly) then making a huge readme document on github that shows how to do things in python and assembly (to show the difference between an interpreted lang and machine code)
i also need to talk to or work with someone that knows something in my chosen field. so if any of you want to, i will have a link to the github repo in the comments. it would be greatly appreciated if you could add some of your own examples / tutorials and knowledge. also having someone read over this and correct things would be nice. if you do contribute, i have a contributors file in the repo. feel free to add your name to the file. i will give you credit in the end project.
so.. ya. it would be greatly appreciated if you could help out or give me some suggestions.26 -
So... The kid from yesterday's rant....
Keep in mind that I have been in classes with him for 5 years.. and he has been annoying me the whole time
I will post a link to yesterday's rant that I am referring to in the comments.
So.. today
He has spent the whole day annoying everyone in the class and he has spent the last 2 hours stealing our computers and making himself the owner of all of our files then sharing them to him.
What should I do???33 -

Feature request:
Can we have polls? For example:
What type of music do you listen to while programming?
EDM
Rock
Classical
Jazz
Soundtracks
Orchestra
Other
Then maybe have an interface like how Twitter handles polls?
(I am curious abt what music people like. Comment your fav)20 -
Dear anyone who has never tried writing a batch script in Ms paint,
Try it.
It's really fun to do (especially when other people are watching and they are like "wtf? How did you write a program with paint??)
<end of random post>6 -
I had someone delete almost all of the videos (YouTube) that I had made and i freaked out because the next day was when I was going to back them all up. So... I lost all my stuff. And was quite dissapointed.
Until 4 months later.
I was scrolling through my twitch channel and found out that at some point I had set up a service to copy all my YouTube vids to twitch (for the people that don't like YouTube or Google) and all my deleted vids where there.
So I guess it isn't a bad data loss story but I did temporarily loose some stuff.4 -
At some point, I joined the 4000++ club.. I should pay more attention. Anyways.. thanks to whoever pushed me over.2
-
I am excited about dartlang.
It's so cool to see a language that can be used to make apps for Android + iOS and websites and webapps and servers and automation / scripting.
(There are probably other languages that do this, but I like dart)2 -
Hey, people's of devrant!
You guys seem to know a lot about this, so I'm going to ask this question here..
Can i have some recommendations for apps to use (Android) that respect privacy and are preferably enctypted?
Things I would like:
Google drive / Dropbox alternative
Image upload
A nice looking image viewer / gallery (I don't like the Samsung one)
An RSS feed reader.
Google docs alternative
Maybe a calendar / reminder app
I think that's it. Also feel free to mention other apps that you guys use on a regular basis26 -
For anyone that wants to install Debian on a Chromebook:
The way I did it is I downloaded the crouton binary (this can be found online) then I used the command:
sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton/ -r Debian -t xfce, cli-extra, core,
Then I looked up how to move it to an external hard drive. Next I just symlinked the files to the normal crouton install path.
Then to start Debian, just type:
Sudo startxfce4
Or for command line only:
Sudo enter-chroot
I hope that was helpful.11 -
Someone remind me not to leave my laptop unlocked around script kiddies. (And @hyperlisk... I hate you for doing that)
People keep thinking
"Oh I'm so cool.. let's just do an
rm -rf /*
"
Ya... No
(Also @hyperlisk, the command is CD / not CD Root)9 -
I have invited a new person to devrant! He is in the programming sub-team on my school's robotics team.
He uses Linux mint.. and I hate him for it. But aside from that, he seems like a cool guy.
As always, feel free to downvote the crap out of him if he starts messing around here.
Anyways, everyone welcome @hyperlisk !24 -
that moment when your classmate sees your devrant stickers then goes searching through devrant.... hopefully he doesn't find me...3
-
Alright...
Its time! I have now publicly released BETA2 of the BecomeRanter script!! (There are still some things not in the repo due to another thing i am working on)
anyways, here is the link:
https://github.com/Ewpratten/...
enjoy! feel free to ask questions here. I will be around for the next 9 hours..3 -
With all the roulette stuff going around, I was going to write something in x86 assembly but I am too lazy.
So now, you have just read a pointless placeholder post instead. -
A question for the peoples..
Is compact, efficient code better?
Or is having a lot of small files with easily readable code better?
(I'm writing c++ for a robot)13 -
Dear all the people at school that try to mess with my laptop at school..
I am going to strangle all of you in your sleep.
Actually tho... Don't mess with my stuff.4 -
I finally get access to the HAL for our robots, and i'm trying to learn how a very specific part of the FPGA works..
Conveniently, there is a single source file missing.
Literally the only one I need!1 -
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good video editing program for Linux?
Searching the internet did not get me any useful results...15 -
It turns out that the weird errors that have been showing up where because I ran:
Gradle build
Instead of:
Flutter build APK
Oops...2 -
I had to use windows the other day and completely forgot how to do basic tasks.... Back to Linux for me.
Also... Windows has gotten so freaking restrictive since the last time I used it as my main. (Win7)4 -
What shell do you guys use?
I am currently messing around with zsh and am wondering what other nice ones people use
(I used to use bash and Korn shell)24 -
I keep trying to follow Google deepdream tutorials in Python and it requires an older version of python27 whenever I try to pop install a module, I get an error because of python27 not supporting ssl.
So annoying.8 -
Why can't people either stop taking my stuff or learn how to use linux?
People keep trying to use my stuff (without permission) and then all they do is annoy me( call me a hacker or try to 1up me) or they get mad because they don't understand Linux.(my laptop boots into Cli by default)3 -
Isn't it fun when someone tries to make you feel guilty for something that you did? Especially when you did it on purpose and with a good reason?1
-
Does anyone here do development on a Chromebook??
Just wondering.
That wasn't the point of this post..
So.. I am working on making a package manager for chrome os. Yes I know that chromebrew exists, this will integrate chromebrew and also add support for installer scripts from other chrome os based projects (like crouton). I am also going to add my own script for creating custom banners and a custom "lockscreen" for the terminal.
Any suggestions for other features?48 -
It's almost time to go off to another FIRST robotics competition!
Good luck to all the other teams and extra good luck (is that even a thing?) To the teams competing in a week 4 event!
In the meantime, I will be spending my last day in <city name> working on some auto code with @hyperlisk -
For y'all interested...
I am working on a website for a school project with @desjna. One of the features I just implemented is a "devranter credits" section that automatically grabs our profile pics and links then displays them... I'm hoping to make this public soon.12 -
I am hoping to get two dev ducks soon.. I am naming the first "sir duck the first" and I will probably name the second one "Steve" ..
I will then make a series of posts called "DEVDUCK ADVENTURES" . Is will be a photo of the duck or ducks and a little story or something about that day's adventure. (I will try to keep it interesting)
I am only writing this down / posting so that I don't forget when I actually get the ducks.
Don't steal my idea.6 -
Day 3!
We are about to play our second match today.
Watch the event here: https://thebluealliance.com/gameday... -
Devrant: the only place where people don't post links to porn unless it is not actually related to the porn.3

Hey guys,
@devDNS will most likely be down for the next three hours, as I am installing a new node in my raspberry pi cluster, and need to do some networking work.
I will post an update when the bot is operational again.11 -
A new update has been made to dr!
For us lazy People:
You can now make a file at ~/ called .dr.conf
In the first line of the file, put your username
In the second line, put your password
Dr will now automatically log in
(Yes I know this is insecure)
Also, for installation:
Cd build/
Sh ./build-linux.sh1 -
It just occurred to me that FRC 2018 kickoff is tomorrow...
I should pay more attention sometimes..
Is anyone else on a FRC team?13 -
Hello everyone!
I have just released a huge update to dr!
This update includes commenting, viewing comments, voting, better backend, and much more!
If you haven't already downloaded the client, go to:
https://github.com/ewpratten/dr
Be sure to read the README!
(Yes, I know some commands take a long time to execute. A lot of data parseing happens in the background. This is being worked on.)4 -
I can tell that I am getting tired when I start copying css / html from the devRant website to use in the devCredits site...
Anyways... the background is now animated and if animation is turned off, the background color can be modified through the link.
Also, @BindView cleaned up some stuff for me.10 -
I am mad!
So.. my school board made everyone email accounts.. without our permission. Then we are forced to do all our work and everything on that account.
Ok.. so what?
That's not the bad part..
I have been trying to get away with using my personal account because the school one has various plugins and apps that I don't want and can't uninstall.
I was asking a teacher about this and some where in the conversation, they mentioned that they automatically install an app on to our computers that let's them view our search history and logins. I hate this! I don't want them looking through my history. There isn't any porn but having a bunch of searches for penatration testing and stuff like that would bring up red flags.
Anyways.. my question is, what can I do to stop this? Or at Least make it harder for them to mess with / read my stuff?
All of this happens on my Chromebook (developer mode enabled.) (Linux based)
Suggestions and your own stories would be appreciated.17 -
I just started learning rustlang.
I am super new to the language (and compiled languages in general). Do any of you guys have some tips or things I should check out?4 -
I need summer projects, so I am asking for input.
I just made @devDNS, what other bots or services would you guys like to see? I cannot guarantee these will run 24/7. Probably only for a day unless people really like them.
I am currently debating a webhook service. I don't want to spam the API. Possibly it could hook into the notifs API or the Android notification service..9 -
Alright, so I am going to start doing dev streams
twitch.tv/retraxa
I am going to stream with @ewpratten at some point tonight. Were gonna be working on robot code and my personal website. I have literally 0 reputation on Twitch so if this doesn't work out I can't really loose. If y'all wanna stop by and give us some stuff to converse about, cool articles or extreme politics and our belief systems go ahead.7 -
Is it just me? Or is it normal to feel special when a cs teacher see you writing x86-64 assembly in class.. it's just that look of "ok.. you clearly are better at my class than me".. anyways. I am finally learning assembly. Any suggestions on something to do so that this doesn't seem like a useless skill?12
-
Best:
Joining an FRC team and getting to hang out with some other dev peeps (@hyperlisk @n3xus)
Worst:
When @desjna decided that he should have the right to delete some stuff that I put a lot of effort into then just blame me for it (this is going to be explained in an upcoming rant)2 -
Just putting this out there...
Since @x-zvf is gone, the @c0d4 vs @haxk20 battle returns.
(Also I no longer have 30000++ for the fourth damn time. Can you guys stop delete your stuff?)16 -
- build my two pixie radios
- get my ham and Morse code licences
- finish writing my rf replay attack program
- build a custom version of raspbian os for FRC
- win all the games (right @ellont?)
There are more.. I can't remember them.. I should really wake up before trying to make lists6 -
Is anyone here in to modding Nintendo stuff?
I used to do custom Homebrew mods for the Wii and had installed Linux on a DSi.
Now my current project is messing around with ACE (arbitrary code injection) in super Mario world.
This concludes ewpratten's useless post.5 -
Alright.. it appears to be setup sharing time. Here is mine:
Modded Chromebook (r11)
Hp 27" monitor
Random keyboard and mouse
Desk4 -
Happy year ++!!!!
I just spent my new years Eve writing a devrant user info api for devCredits... so.. ya.1 -
Why the fuck does python think that 50 <= 10 ????? This is so annoying!!!
Anyways.. I am working on a devrant client for the Arduino for matrix display..5 -
Guys...
I am switching my main laptop to Ubuntu (yes, I am leaving arch) due to the fact that the laptop has a ton of non-standard components, I have given up on trying to get them all to work.
I will be using Ubuntu untill I buy a desktop. Then back to arch for me.6 -
What must someone do to be called a developer? Is there some number of projects that someone should complete before they should call themself a developer?12
-
What are people's thoughts on the new chrome os update? I think it looks cool but the whole glass panel design doesn't really fit Google's material design theme.7
-
I hate Twitter so much right now! I was trying to embed a timeline into my new website and it kept only showing me a link. I thought that my server config was messed up and re did everything from scratch. It turn out that when you use the Twitter embed tool, it doesn't add "https:" in front of the link to the js file. There is a week of work wasted because of a broken link.1

So.. on addition to my rant yesterday
(https://devrant.com/rants/1019200/...)
I was working with two other people for a project and two of us have CAPD.
So we decided to go work in the hallway. We asked two of our teachers (we have 4 for this class) and they where fine with it.
Even if they said no, their opinion didn't matter because I have some paperwork from the school board that lets me go to a quiet place of my choosing to work.
So we get out into the hallway and start working.
But then... One of my other teachers (the one that thinks I am a hacker) comes out and starts yelling at us because apparently we are being disruptive to other classes. (We where being quiet)
I explained that we where being quiet then he changed his excuse to:
I don't want other people thinking that it is ok to go out to the hallway to "work"
I am like "Bitch, it isn't my fucking fault that your students don't follow rules" (I didn't actually say that)
Some other stuff happened but I am getting tired of typing.....
Anyways.. why can't people fucking Respect that I have a hearing Disorder?? He yells at me and then just ignores my response.
Another problem:
I was sitting in the hallway with my friend (aka.. girlfriend) and we where holding hands. Then he gets mad at us for touching each other!! I understand that if someone touches someone else, they get sent to the office because it can count as abuse... But I was just holding hands!!!
PS.
Sorry for the bad rant quality.. I am so done with everything right now..7 -
For the people that missed my comment at the bottom of my last rant, I have gotten the Twitter account set up for my locker door Twitter project.
Here is the account:
https://twitter.com/LockerDoor2 -
Why does FRC have to make it so herd to find info on FMS data???
anyways.. if anyone else wants to see the docs, here they are:
https://chiefdelphi.com/forums/...
https://wpilib.screenstepslive.com/...
hopefully this will help someone..2 -
I have been playing around with coinhive because I really like it's concept. Pretty cool so far.
Does anyone here have experience with it? What are your thoughts?
Also.. why can't pihole let me whitelist wildcard domains?? I hate having to disable my DNS server every time I want to test the miner.. I guess I will just have to make a pihole / ftl plugin for it..5 -
I somehow managed to max out the character count on both my about section and my skills...
I guess I can't learn anything new then...2 -
That moment when you are scrolling through DevRant and see a post you like, go to dubble tap it and then realize that you posted it...... Oops...
-
Idea. What if we can get a screenshot tunnel thing (screenshot the screenshot) and see how compressed/ distorted the original can get.38

Seriously though, I love working in libraries, by the river, and I love rain (I am extremely productive in the rain)3 -
Vrooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Working with pneumatics is a challenge sometimes. Especially on a robot.8 -
Time for our 4th and final day of our robotics competition!
I recommend that you watch a bit of the livestream: http://www.twitch.tv/firstontario1 -
So I do web development and video editing.. i am also a Linux user but I want a change. could someone suggest a distro with decent support and also a desktop environment with a very clean flat ui?11
-
So.. I need to learn c++ for school. The only language that I have spent alot of time in is Python. So if someone could give me some resources for learning that are fairly basic it would be greatly appreciated.7

I am trying to find a good time for my phone. But there don't seem to be any.
Does anyone mind helping me find one? Or have any suggestions?
(Preferably lineage os)

So.. since @linuxxx is talking about his blog.
I might as well share my blog idea..
I am planning on making a "blog" website that automatically pulls from Twitter as well as a folder of actual "blog posts" and displays them in order.. basically a live feed of my online life.
What should I use..
Php?
Or is there something else that can do the job as well?11 -
!rant
I am at the first robotics team meeting of the year at my school.
Let me say, holy shit! There are so many people.
I hope this goes well.8 -
I have sent in an email for my stickers
Finally.
I am awaiting their arrival....
Thanks in advance @dfox @trogus
(I hope I formatted the mailing address correctly)5 -
I'm not sure what to do right now.
I'm pretty stuck between the decision of leaving my project on my own GitHub repo or putting it in an organization and I know an organization would look better because the profile would be specifically made for the project and its plugins, but it's already set up on my own account by itself and I'm really not sure which one I should choose.
So.. should I post it on its own GitHub organization or should I leave it on my own account?2 -
Why TF to I have to authenticate with GPR just to download a *PUBLIC* package??
Why not just use Gradle's *BUILT IN* GitHub package loader? What's the point of this service?!??5 -
Is there any way for me to make money doing something dev related (coding or server work).. it would be nice to make some money doing something I like but my problem is that I am 14.... Any suggestions?9
-
In kindergarten I discovered the admin login for the whole school.
I spent "computer learning time" playing around with command line stuff. From then on everyone calls me "hacker".2 -
I invite anyone to give me suggestions on what services to use to keep my online stuff (email, files, others) more secure/ private. Also what's the best firewall for Android?8
-
Khan academy can go die!
I will get a question wrong, then click the hint. Then read through the steps. Then I copy the "correct" awnser into the box and it's still wrong.... Why can't Khan at Least agree with it's self???
Also. It has a habit of asking two same questions in a row. But sometimes (even though it's the exact same question) using the same awnser doesn't work... Then it tells me that I was using the correct awnser in the fucking hint!
Anyways.... I'm done with Khan academy.5 -
This rant exsists for @ReportBot's logging.
I do not recommend commenting on this unless you want to be spammed with notifications8 -
I am in the process of rewriting BecomeRanter, and have built a much better training process..
Who wants to be used as training data?
I will train the neural network on you, then send you some of the output..
An example of an earlier version of this project can he found at: @windowsss6 -
Hey so.. I do alot of work using Ableton Live 9 Intro but I am also switching to either Ubuntu or arch.. great, that's fine. One problem tho.. there is no Linux version for Ableton. Does anyone have a working steup for Ableton on Linux? If so would you mind sharing it with me?2
-
Time for some one-off self-promotion.
I used to be very active around here, but dropped off the face of the internet world for a bit. I still lurk around and respond when people mention me in comments, but if you'd like to see things I post, and projects I work on, please consider following me on twitter.
You can find me @ewpratten over there.

I need help.. I want to make a web app where me and my teammates can upload save files / project files. And then I want it to organize them by date, name, and file extension. Can someone suggest a place to store the files, host the app, and host/run the backend code.4

Ok so I'm a student so I don't have a boss but man this one kid who is the lead of my programming team. I swear he works with a 10ft pole up his a**. Maybe that's why he is so tall 🤔. Anyways he is a nerd and by far my LEAST favorite person ever. I wish nothing but BSODs in his future. He is a devrant user but I'm not gonna name him to hurt his feelings. *cough* ewpratten *cough* but im.pretty sure he copy pastas 🍝 his code from stack schools and pastes it in our mainframe robot.
