Hello guys. So after I posted the rant about me blocking Google and Facebook through my hosts file, some people commented with the idea of creating a gitlab page with more privacy tips etc.
Well, that is turning into a project (actual website) that I initially started alone but @ewpratten joined the 'team' as frontender!
He'll be doing the front end and I'll be doing the backend :).
I think this will be my first ever (active) collab so I'm pretty excited =D.62
I don't fucking understand this. Why the hell does every website has a autoplay video in their website?
I don't want to see your fucking video when I open your article, I am fucking trying to read something.11
7 years of "learning" "IT" at school...
What have I learned: Excel, Word, PowerPoint....
School started. I got the new book and we are doing more than MS Office!
We are making a website
Me: I finished the website.
Client: Thanks, It looks really good!
Client: But could you make me a Facebook page instead?
Please stop fucking asking me to install your shitty mobile apps. They do the same thing your site does. I have a browser, and it's a lot better. I don't even visit you every day. But even if I did, and I wanted your crappy app, I'd open the app store and download it by myself. No need to push me.
No need to waste the little screen estate I have with crappy call-to-action sections to download that shit.
Fuck your desire for more information about me. Fuck your narcissistic enjoyment when I have your icon on my fucking home screen.
The truth is, there is a very small number of apps that really need to integrate with a phone to offer better experience.
I feel most of you feel you need to have an app just because everyone else does. And so you could show these little Android and Apple logos on your website or ads. Well, how about you just make sure your site works well on a mobile screen and don't waste your money on a half-baked mobile shit app unless it really offers something worthwhile?
And if you do have a good app and it really does something, ask me just once and fucking respect my choice. Don't just ask me again and again, on every page, with every new session, or I'll just stop visiting.
You're all not that unique, so fuck you!17
I'm creating a website and I'm thinking: Wow, I use html, css, javacript and python, I'm awesome! Then I see what other people know: shit, I'm not awesome...
Programmer: the more you know, the more modest you become...8
Friend: Your job is so easy. I just made a website in 15 mins.
Me: oh ok. Show me.
When you are creating new design for your website and everything works fine and then you see that you browser is zoomed on 150%😫😭6
A Professor of mine - We need u to build that website so that your juniors could work on it too after u leave.
Me - Sure, I'll have docs and vcs
Prof : Whatever, at the end we need the "exe" ready.
- Wife logs onto uni website Saturday at 11pm to drop an elective, drop deadline is Monday
- Goes to course list and chooses course to drop
- "Course modification is available Monday-Saturday from 6am to 10pm"
😑 are you kidding me..
Like 😡😠 websites don't have business hours! Servers don't need nights or weekends off!! It's ridiculous to think that someone had to code this block for these hours, more effort than just leaving it always available.6
Fucking hate it when a website asks for feedback when I just fucking went to their homepage. Fuck you.2
Creating a personal website:
Step 1: Have 20mins of inspiration.
Step 2: Spend a day writing css and js
Step 3: Realize it sucks because (ugly || bad responsive design || not enough content)
Step 4 Experience no inspiration what so ever for next week
Step 5: Repeat11
According to my sysadmin, there is no point in changing our shitty, 20 year old website because technology develops so rapidly, and making it more accessible by Google is overrated...6
!rant Decided to use the DevTools audit thing to try to improve my personal website. An embarrassing number of hours later and I finally have to tell the perfectionist in me to chill.14
Me: Browsing the security of a website.
Tell the website developer that they are using the SHA-1 hashing algorithm for encrypting the credentials of it's registered users.
Them: Yeah, so what?
Me: You shouldn't be using an algorithm which was exploited years ago in the age of 2016.
Them: Don't worry, nothing will happen.
My first rant was about this topic.
I once made a program using C++ which would allow you to make HTML pages.
I made a menu using switch () like this:
1. Add Title to website
2. Add Image
3. Add New Line
4. Add paragraph
This was the most useless and stupid thing I ever made5
"Do you know the HTML? I need an email template"
Nah, the website just fucking magically made itself, it was amazing.2
decided to rebuild my personal website as an emulated terminal... pretty happy with it so far.
(its open source in case anyone wants to check it out: https://github.com/alexdovzhanyn/...)9
"Simply log into our portal to access a list of toolkits designed from the ground up to help with your given needs. Using our unique tailored framework we can .... "
Sandra, calm the fuck down. You have a website with some reading material, a form and a few buttons. Get over yourself.2
Friend - Could you develop a Website for me ?
Me - What exactly for?
Friend - (Explains what he wants) and the name of the site should be eventsomethingmanagement.com
Me - oh for that you'd have to buy the domain name, and host your site there
Friend - I thought you'd do all of that
Me - Seriously? NO
Friend - I thought you were an engineer
Me - :|8
Spent all day designing my website only to delete it all because I didn't like it... Day well spent...9
So me and a friend were bored and decided to build this website.
If you ever need to use the internet offline;
This will be a long rant.
Met this person through my brother's friend. He wanted a cheap static website with a few products images for his handicraft store. I agreed as it would not take much time. He paid me in full upfront.
I registered the domain and created all the page templates with dummy contents. I uploaded the site under a staging sub-domain and asked him for the contents, but he said he was a bit busy and would give them to me later on.
After almost 2 years, out of nowhere, he got back to me and told me he didn't want that old website anymore but he wanted a new personal website. What shocked me was that he told me that he would only pay me for the domain and space but won't pay me for the website as his pervious work was never complete. I denied straight forward and told him I would keep the 80% amt for my work done but he kept telling me I hadn't done anything except place a few images in some html files. Hahaha, After a few in and out mails I told him I didn't wanted his money and would refund all of it, but this shitty guy had a messed of mind. He started posting messages of my fb wall about how i was a fraud and I had taken his money. Things got intense. I had decided to sue this cheap minded asshole but after my brother's friend convinced me not to and apologized on his behalf. He told me not to worry about it and move on.
Haven't heard from him till now.
Thank you for reading till this far.11
For anyone that was too lazy to read all of @linuxxx's post. Here is a short summary. we are working together to create an informational website about online (and possibly offline) privacy. If this interests you, keep an eye out for updates from either me or @linuxxx13
Hey guys! I made a sort of parody website as a project for my university and I would really love to get some critisism!
Here it is:
Note that it's not perfect, has some dead links and is overall still under construction, but if you don't like the UI, User Experience or some other feature, please let me know!
I'm sorry if this isn't the place to pester for help, but I've literally got no one to ask (who knows his shit) for opinions...12
I was looking up this vsauce video about comic sans when an ad crossed my way.
What an eyecatcher! I want a website in that style now...6
Thinking about this makes me pull my fucking hairs.
The fact that I have to look for the actual content in a website, among all the ads, prompts and fucking stupid design is fucking ridiculous.
Every fucking website is following this designs now. Always showing popups to subscribe to their fucking newsletter the moments you visit the site.
Can you please let me fucking read the content I require first?
"No fucking way. I will block 80% of the viewport with unnecessary stuff. I will place my ads on the left and right side. On the bottom, I will have a blocking div that will prompt you to subscribe to our newsletter. And on the top, we will have this huge fucking navbar which will take 30% of the view. That 20% area left in the middle? yeah, good luck on finding something useful in there"
Then there are this fucking cunts, that blocks the whole website the moment you enter.
"Oh, you need some information, right? Why not just subscribe to our emails first so that we can send your useless junks every now and then".
Oh my fucking batman, don't even remind me of those stupidass videos. Now 90% of the popular website will play a video immediately after you enter the website.
And guess what?! The volume will be amplified to 500% so that that's the sound you will ever hear in your lifetime.
The fucking web is becoming absolute shite right now. We really need a revolution here which makes the websites show the appropriate amount of ads and prevents them from doing all these stupids shits.5
Ah finally, the moment when being a web developer is full of joy.
☑️ Server-side rendering
☑️ Inline critical css
☑️ Add progressive image loading
☑️ Minify everything
☑️ Automate release process in CI
☑️ Lint everything
Now that the strucutre is up, time to code the actual website. This is gonna be good!8
I don't understand... How can people prefer complicated web pages with fancy design over the simple and effective design of your router configuration page?
I mean, look at it... It's beautiful. If I ever asked as a client to a developer to build me a website, it'd look just like this.13
Just got my website hosting and domain bought ☺️ will upload tomorrow!
On a side note, slow cookers are the bomb. Made some excellent beef just now.4
a friend asks...
Friend: Hey I have this website and I'm having a problem, can you help me?
Me: surre what is it?
Friend: So I have this WordPress plugin..
Me (interrupts): Sorry I can't help you, your site is doomed
What is going on with the web these days? 500 adds, 3 auto play video's per page and now this shit?!
Websites that do this should be removed from Google.
I don't think it's even allowed.
If you block it, it goes to a subdomain 1.<website> and asks for permission again. If you block that one it'll go to 2.<website>, up until 10.<website>, then it switches to either a "get Express VPN" or another website that asks for permission. And that one even claims to be reCAPTCHA! and then another that asks you to press "Allow" in order to watch the video. What video?!25
Hi, guys after a building a website (code from scratch) do you give the source code to the client 🤔?11
Has anyone ever donated a website and its maintenance/hosting to a charity?
There's a pet rescue/homing RSPCA centre near me and their website is terrible. I keep thinking about doing this for them.
!rant Realized I can embed repl.it repls into a webpage, which means that I can show off all my cool little C/ C++ programs on my portfolio website. Which of course led me to realize my portfolio site needed updating which is of course the reason I’m still up at 4:30 am.4
Being a complete and utter asshole does not make your website get developed any faster, so you can kindly fug off.1
I still go to school and I hate that our school Website looks like this...
They just deleted the pictures which are still used in the site👏4
So today I started to learn PHP & SQL for a team web development competition where we have until January to build a functioning website and showcase it to the judges! It's a little stressful but wish me luck because I'll need it..8
My mom runs a website and I have to help sometimes. Which is fine.
The problem is, it's a WordPress site.3
So our university website was recently refurbished with new design. But fucking hell it's bad. Not only the whole website is full of bugs, the design choices are extremely poor.
Sometimes, when I open a course page, it opens a modal with undefined as it's title. And I have to click close button ten times to close the modal.
I can't even blame university. The guy was a former student and Uni probably trusted him. What a retard!5
Back when I was in school, there was me, these 2-3 other guys, we maintained the school's sites + graphics and what not. If there was a problem, we could solve it. The school hosted big events and the site had over 50k hits in 2 days.
We used PHP then (was a new thing then for us)
Was looking at the schools site now out of nostalgia,
THE SHIT DOESNT EVEN SCALE WELL.
Graphics look like they were made using MS Paint.
Has a prominent 'designed by so n so' who is a student there.
Was checking the source code,
<meta name="generator" content="Zyro - Website Builder" />
FUCKER DIDNT EVEN CODE IT HIMSELF.
I wanna go back to my school and spank those bastards there.
This LITERALLY hurts.2
FUUUUUUCCCKKK, now the websites have new features, where no matter how many time you try to go back from their website, they will redirect back to their SHITTY FUCKING WEBSITE. FUUUUCCCKKKK YOU3
Finally (sort of )completed my website for the first time ever.
Sorry for the useless post, but some of you should be able to relate.20
Finally finished the basic stuff on my website!
Now i'm gonna take a break and play some video games.
And thanks to @Alice for the dark/light theme switch.
There's this WebDesigner who wants every single website made pixel-perfect to his design.
We usually spend like 1 extra month on each website just because we can't do it pixel-perfect for each resolution
Now I'm working on yet another of his websites and his brother is beside me as a stagist
Am I allowed to insult the designer and swear against him every 5 minutes or so?5
OH MY FUCKING BATMAN, WHY THE FUCK DOES THIS WEBSITE SHOWS ME A POPUP WHEN I HAVEN@T EVENT FINISHED READING THE FUCKING ARTICLE. FUUUUUUUUU1
Gotta crank put a website for our new store in 2 days, with a webstore and figure out how to get pokemon into the actual shop. And the hosting gives me 50MB. Yes. In 2016.2
When you build a site on heroku not thinking alot of people will see it, and out of nowhere you get crazy messages from alot of people saying why does it take 5 hours to load your website. :/
When your friends/contacts presume you'll make them a free website just because they are your friend...1
I know its 1999... but who called their website a WWWebsite.
This was my school's website in 1999. They didn't stop calling it a wwwebsite until 2002.
on some of the later versions of the site(2000+) they were proud of the "little bit of Java and Shockwave" - (School Website) on their site3
Me: *builds smol website for blogging purposes*
Hmm 🤔 so I need to be able to find a way to display properly to mobile clients as well, the desktop style is shite on my phones... How about going for all-screen and less than 1440px width? I mean there don't exist any phones with over 1440px width and I'm sure that everyone is now using 1920px width on their desktop panels (please keep the portrait desktop monitor setups out for now 😢)... Aight, looks nice now in both desktop and mobile. Awesome!
Few days later...
Le Telegram inbox: *ping*!
User: um yeah your font is way too large
Me: *looks at screenshot* (at least it was an actual screenshot, not a picture) well that's the mobile view.. why are you using that, what's your resolution?
Why are you doing this to yourself and why are you doing this to me 😭24
This was the first website created by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1991.
Is it just me or every other back end dev that has this weird habit of trying to guess the back end used in every website you visit ?5
wild people somewhere with real high end laptop (it's apple, so we can tell by looking at it?) :"am developing a website..."
.... "develop" a website... using wordpress?
i think these days people have confuse the term develop and design.....4
I wanted to let everyone know that I finally decided to release the new version of my website! 😄
TableTopFinder is a board game database with price comparing in several European web shops.
Any feedback is welcome, I like good ideas! 😊6
Am I the only one who thinks DevRant should have a proper desktop website instead of just making us navigate in a stretched out version of the mobile app?
Don't get me wrong, I love this place, but a desktop website would sure be nice! :D7
In one of my first jobs i developed an (ugly and heavly under-payed) e-commerce/media platform for a customer.
That customer was constantly making fun of his bald partner telling how he was gay, liked dicks, etc., drawing dicks and bananas as sample website logos or uploading dildo/penis images as images, he was always like this.
Once the website was ready for production i removed all the "testing" posts and images and told the client to insert some real content and alert me when it was ready for release.
Well some time after the release i got a call from that client, for the first time he was serious:
C: Hi, why there are dildo images on the server? (the website in production was full of dildo/penis images instead of actual product images, he even photoshopped the head of his partner on a penis and uploaded it!!!)
R: ehm... i told you it was on production and to stop uploading bad content....
C: Ummm ok, please fix it immediatly, thanks!3
Website WITH FB, Twitter, translate plugin:
Page size: 3.6MB
Website WITHOUT FB, Twitter, translate plugin:
Page size: 680KB
Wth!! And can't find a way to optimise these shits..3
I love it when people make a mistake and break something on their website then act as tho the are losing millions of pounds every second like they are going to have to remortgage their house "life is over", if it's not fixed in 30 seconds the world will end!
Then you look at their website and you think they probably have about two users every week, and the website looks like it has been built by a one armed monkey. Delusional2
Last week I designed the front page of a construction company website for getting the internship....
After showing my sample to the HR ..he mailed me asking
"Do you know how to code?"
Now I don't know is it sarcastic or I really don't know how to code.17
Saw a website having an image with resulution `4828x3265`, as the background, that too in a slider with multiple images that densities that high.4
The website of the italian post service is "closed" between 23:45 and 00:15, everyday.
I don't know if something like this happens in other countries...
And do you know when I really need to access it?
ALWAYS IN THESE 30 MINUTES, not the others 1.410 of the day!
What do you think, what could be a valid reason to "close" a web service?
I thought about backup, but other services don't have this problem.4
When a client calls you after hours saying their website is down, you check it and it's working... Then the client says "oh, I was spelling our own domain wrong"!!!!!1
Really getting tired of these web design ads. I would turn on Adblock but I want to support YouTubers that are actually interesting to watch. I saw this ad today, Divi. A plugin of some sort for WordPress and the lady in the video is talking about how building a website is like painting a master piece but not really. And then goes on about "creating" a website with their tool on the page itself. (Like a Wix or Weebly but on the actual page and live). I watch the video to the end and decide to check the comments and someone said "or you know, learn HTML and stop being lazy" *liked* then one smart ass replied, "or use Wix, or use Weebly, or use any other thing online that lets you design a website without typing code". It annoys me how ignorant people can be about designing, but I don't blame them. People are lazy in general and would want to do things the easy way even though it's not the best way. You know the saying, give a man a CMS or WYSIWYG builder and he'll make a website, but teach a man to code and he'll make more, improved websites.4
So I was looking for restaurants and this is the website of one in my area. Not sure if minimalistic design or just writen html in text editor. Maybe he hired a dev who took "will only take 30min" too seriously.4
I have finally started to work on my personal site, just made the best photo for the background in my opinion
Any tips of what I should add or remove on the photo and any tips of what sections to add on the website27
Am I the only one who couldn't care less how my website looks on Internet Explorer? If you visit my website, you'd better damn well not be using Internet Explorer.7
Soon I have a 2-day course on website creation. Yaaay, let’s learn WordPress this brand new technology !4
The original website for the movie Space Jam. I wonder what it looks like, on a 4K display.
My manager asked me: Did you tested the website on all browsers?
I simply said YES. Then he asked again, Did you test it on IE?
I simply replayed: what that IE? We don't use untrusted application for testing our work.1
Can companies please check their address policy for consistency before implementing some bullshit constraints? Literally happened minutes ago:
Me: __enters address "city"__
Website: Hey, I auto-correct your city to "City (Region)"
Me: __submits form__
Website: Whoa there, you can't enter braces in your city name!3
- Hey , what do you study?
- Computer Science
- So Cool! Can you make me a website for my society?
Me: So... do you want a website, right?
Me: ...but you don't know how it should look, right?
Client: Ehm... correct.
Me: ...and you don't even know what color should I use?
Me: ...and of course you can't link me a website you like which I can base on.
So now I have to invent something randomly that somehow will be the exact same thing you would like to see. Nice.1
Warning: I code just for fun.
Today I finished a website and I asked to my friends to tell me what they think about it saying that it wasn't yet properly responsive and that could be some error, so I asked if they could use the computer to view it and all of them sent to me screenshots of the website on mobile.
I hate them.
P.S. Sorry for my english...8
Background: I'm in middle school, and two popular games that people liked got blocked. My friend and I made a website with the blocked games on a free 000webhost subdomain. It was a crappy, twenty minute website that I made with just a view counter, the games, and a chat room for people looking for other people to play with.
Story: one day I opened up the chat room where another friend and I were gonna talk about our teacher behind her back. I opened the chat room, and in the previous chat text, there was a line that said "Username: " and a text box. Then, about five lines, each with two text boxes separated by a ":". I knew that it could've been my friend that "made" the site with me (he designed the logo and occasionally modified the HTML), but I suspected not. He wasn't smart enough. Now when I was building the chat room, I internationally didn't put in XSS protection, just to see if someone would catch onto it, and, to my surprise, someone obviously did. Now there's someone in my school, who could be just like me, but I don't know where. Man, I really wanna find him (or her)! Of course, it could be my teachers, who are messing with it and could be trying to get it blocked -_-1
The single most annoying thing about working with Microsoft is how they, at one point, decided to wipe 99% of their articles and downloads on their site. But instead of updating it in their OWN FUCKING OS, they just leave links to the broken pages in their help system. The second problem then arises when you realise that instead of giving you an error page, it automatically redirects you to the default page.
But on top of wiping their site, not updating windows to reflect those changes, and having a terrible site design, they have also decided that it would be best to keep the pages that once we're, online. This means that they will still show up in search engines, without any content being there.
Add to that the fact that their support team is incompetent to an insane degree, and often doesn't know what they're talking about. This has caused me so much frustration over the last few days.
Dear Microsoft, please get your act together and fix your shitty website.
A pissed of customer who paid money for your shitty services3
Working on photo contest site, no design, no specification. 2 weeks until deadline.
CEO: Deadline is one week earlier, and client wants to have video uploads and automatic facebook share too.
Me: We don't even have a contract and design to work with yet.
CEO: No worries, the contract will be signed by the time you finished the website.
Site done in 1 week, including weekend days and overtime. Production on client's server as asked by CEO.
3 weeks later...
Me: So van you pay the overtime I worked?
CEO: Sorry client not payed and says they don't like the end product. I can't afford to pay you overtime.
2 days later.
CEO: The online department is lossy so you have to work harder in the next month, we have 3 sites to be done.
Me: Do we have the contracts?
CEO: No worries...5
So I just found this in the source of a website...
There was a copyright note as well. The page was made in 2001...
It is the website of a German institute of education4
I'd really fucking love if somebody developed a browser plugin which puts a red fucking glowing banner over every website which sends data to PRISM.
Users deserve to know what cunty sell-out crapsites they visit.13
For the fortune of you not to know, Homestead is a sad attempt at a Wix-like build your own website platform.
However, Homestead is the most unusable piece of shit platform that humans have ever had the misery of interacting with
Lets start off with the login page. The login page is small, unresponsive and half the time just deletes your input whenever you press submit.
It's important to note that unless you're running MacOS or Windows, Homestead will send to an error page on which there's a link to contact support, but pressing that link requires MacOS or Windows.
Fine, I'll fiddle around with my user-agent, and we'll be in soon enough. But now we come to the joy that is the website editor itself.
The website editor is clunky, hard to use, and has enough menus and submenus and sidebars to make the Jira UI shake with fear. Each interface option label is either ridiculously ambiguous or just straight up wrong. The built-in HTML editor doesn't support HTML5, in the name of "browser compatibility".
CSS? Pah! Who needs it! Our psuedo-90s skeuomorphic ugly-as-shit prebuilt styles will work just fine. Responsive design? Bullshit! Nobody uses a smartphone to browse the web, so why do we need to handle it?
Uploading a file? Good fucking luck buddy. There's a complicated dance among the minefield of pop-ups that ask you to confirm some shit or modify some shit and you gotta click the right option each time or else the file won't upload.
Wanna use https like 86% of the entire web and all modern websites? That's a premium feature. Fork over an extra $10 a month
Ok ok, I made it through all that. Dig through the thousands of menus to find the 'publish changes' button, and sigh with relief.
Open up a private browser tab to check my work, and nope. The site looks like shit, even by Homestead's standards. That's because Homestead claims to be a WYSIWYG editor, but it's a damn lie. The site looks like shit, so it's time do dive back into the hellhole that is this damn site editor.
And rinse and repeat. Deal with the shitty editor, publish, and pray it doesn't look like garbage. Be too scared to test on other devices because this flaming pile of dog shit pretending to be a website is bad enough on my device.
Two more months, then I'm done with this client. Someone get me a drink4
Hi (sory for my bed emglish)
I'we just make a website to hack NASA and stead them souce code. Chec it out:
😃My boss, always positive.
Somebody told him about node.
He came to office and says...
Node sounds a good plan for our app. How many nodes we need to host a website?🤔4
Does anyone else have this problem?
I hate designing a personal website. I'm never content with what I made, and even if I feel satisfied a couple of days later I want to start all over. I've gone through at least five complete rebuilds in one year because I can't make up my mind! How do you deal with it?11
You know a website launch is going to go smoothly when:
1) it survives multiple reviews,
2) it's packaged up and sent to the client,
3) client tells you there's incorrect info,
4) incorrect info matches current site, and
5) client doesn't provide the correct info.
Just when I want to get inspirations for my personal site by looking at other websites by devranters the famous website of @alice is down :(
Any other websites I should check out as example?9
So I took up a website development project, and the customer sent me a clear requirements document (yay!). I make the website, show the demo and boom, suddenly the client wants COMPLETELY different things. Fml.1
I just got an email from work to fix a website that is down. A website of another company.
I just don’t understand how peoples brains work?2
Boss: Let's hire a new person to help us recreate our website
Us: sounds good!
Boss doesn't hire anyone and starts the website on his own
Boss: I started the new website. It's in server X and the address is test.y.com. I also want all of us to work on it
Me thinking: great he just wants us to modify the hosted files like he does 🙄
Me: I'll move a copy to GitHub for version control.
Boss creates a backup folder on the same computer and folder path that the hosted files are on.
Someone please nuke that server so my boss learns version control like I've asked before. I think I'll opt not to work on a website where he and my other co-workers will just overwrite each other's changes because he doesn't want to learn to git 😑4
Working on a marijuana dealer website and there's an order of 420€ on it.
I bet she did it on purpose6
My PM wants to take the current website, which really sucks on mobile (one of the worst mobile viewports I have seen) and put in an iOS/Android app.
So basically he wants an iOS/Android app which contains only 1 activity/viewcontroller which contains a webview...
Tried to talk him out of it, but I can't even get him to consider using a hybrid framework.
He doesn't appear to care very much about performance of the app neither does the PM care much about UX.
What the PM does care about is this thing called : ONE CODEBASE.
Any tips how I can try to persuade him to atleast consider a hybrid framework? Any requirements that will force the PM to abandon this stupid idea are extremly welcome!15
Last week I made my own Website, I was so proud on it.
Today I told a friend absolut it and he shows me how to do it right with CSS-Grids.
Now I am asking me how coud I be proud on my old website4
I hate it when FOSS projects don't put a link to the repository on their website.
I don't want to search through fucking GitHub, GitLab, or BitBucket to hopefully find the official project repo.
Or search every page on the site for a god damn link.
Just put somewhere on top.
One employer has just contacted me, said that my resume seems very interesting and invited me.
Now I'm looking at their website, all from 00s and with cringey fonts. Ok, they do "automatization of financial systems" and etc.
Alright, scrolling down... Suddenly, I see cut from the familiar soviet cartoon "Vovka in the Far Away Kingdom", where in the end Vova says:
- Well, that would do!
Now I'm questioning my will to attend this interview.4
!rant && feedback
So we (me and friends) have been working on this website for a month now and we think we are ready to launch. If you want please do check it out and give some feedback :D would love that
Time to change the copyright numbers on the bottom of my website, i guess i should have automated that a while back...
Happy new year anyway!6
I remember when I had my first "website job" and I put it on a test domain to show it to the client.
But when I changed things up in the css or something, the client wouldn't see the updates.
It took me a whole bunch of time to figure out it was caching. So I told him to use an anonymous tab. Fun time, back then..
How do professionals manage these things? :D6
Check out my new website!
Redirection is temporary. plz wait 5sec
any suggestions welcome!
Please test download lunks and see if it works or not2
When you are asked to test the whole website and you found a pop-up so deep after a series of conditions that it show a video of Homer Simpsons doing the ice bucket challenge
My battery died after a long day. So, I decided to use devRant web for the first time and to be honest with all due respect this website sucks. Most difficult thing about it is navigation.3
Released a new version of my website. What do you think about it, guys? :)
That moment when you're working on a website and all of the sudden the site (on localhost) stops working, you don't understand why, and then you realize you're offline :/, your site uses Jquery for everything (And because you're lazy, you didn't downloaded it... and you never will).1
> Website registration form is a popup dialog.
> Fills in a bunch of details.
> Accidentally clicks outside of the dialog instead of register, dialog closes.
> Tries to register again, all details are gone.
Great, I have to waste another 5 minutes of my life filling your stupid form.2
> Developer in a company that builds Enterprise Applications with web client and stuff.
> Had an really nice website a which colleague made with joomla as base.
> New CMO thinks it would be cool if he could change more details.
> Company now uses some cheap ugly website builder.
WTF is wrong with u O.o
Hi, guys, about a month ago i created a covid 19 live tracking website for my portfolio. But today remember i could ask for review in devRant about the site. So i hope you give me any upgrade suggestion for the website.Anything like ui/ux or new content or faults etc
website link :
The day I understand how CSS works will be a lifetime achievement...!!!
Having hard time when you have to design and develop a website at a time... I just hate designing... (No offense.. personal opinion)7
*using random JS for website*
*finds stuff not working*
*opens JS file*
(mesh of code)
I love you, Visual Studio :')4
We released a website for a client 10 days ago. The site was up and running and everything seemed fine.
But it turns out that the site used 15GB of bandwidth in 5 days ( WTF???).
So now I need to go and examine my code to make sure I didn't forget something and implement a new caching methods to try and reduce the amount of bandwidth being used.
But I still don't understand how a small "newspaper" website with a max upload size of 5MB could of used so much in so little time.
I also added a screenshot showing the number of visits from an addthis dashboard5
Ever tried to do something “simple” and it ended up taking several days and a piece of your sanity?
Trying to connect my website to a blog site made with Hexo has been that for me.
I am actively trying to not think about the fact that my live website is so horrendously broken.
I bet you, this time will fucking come.

Does anyone have experience in turning a website idea into a working business? I had a website idea so me and friend decided to make it happen. So far the development is going well, but we don't really know what's next after we're done. Does anyone know any resources regarding what's next? However to reach audience, investors and staff like that?11
Those EU cookie law notices COVERING UP the website so I have to click them and I'm not even in the EU so it doesn't apply here!2
000WEBHOST IS SO MUCH SHIT IN ONE PLACE
Nothing on their website is working, every time internal errors and default loading times at up to 1.2 sec
Do you all have your own VPS server to host your own portfolio website ? If yes provide me with a decent one.8
What do you think about having a portfolio website for junior devs? Does it help, does it not? How could I promote mine?13
Ugh I really wish I could just decide on something and role with it, haven't touched my book or website for a while so of course my websites code is all fucking horrible and spaghetti and I want to rewrite and revisit a lot of my book -,-
Why can't I just be happy with something like this!
Devrant website UI is so fucking cool! Man I so love it! <3
(the last time I used it on a browser was almost 1 year ago, when it had the mobile-app kinda UI)
It kinda overshadows the mobile app UI. Wish I had more time off from my job and could work on the mobile UI for android.1
My parents "know" that I build websites. The funny part is the "how" I build them. For them, I call obscure forces and make a sacrifice. And thus, the website is done. So they don't really know how I do it, but I have their deepest respect and pride. Plus, I don't get to fix anyone's printer / computer 😍2
After many months of hard work we are finally near to release the new website. It feels amazing and is such a relief. Some days it seemed like everything was against me but it's in times like these I am so glad to be a developer.2
My dad was using notepad to edit some HTML for his website. I downloaded Visual Studio Code and he likes it SO MUCH MORE. (I wonder why....).
Kinda happy I could help him with it. He is pretty good at coding but just hasn't done it in a while (not his trade) so he doesn't know all the new tools and such.4
I started building an application for FIDAL (Italian Federation of Athletics) because why not: I was bored and wanted to learn Flutter.
There is no API, but I didn't even expect it. Parsing the HTML is easy enough.
I'd also like to mention that all pages that require form input won't load correctly if you don't include "submit=Invia" in the URL.
I am not giving up.3
Hey guys, hope you all have a great day.
I am not a professional developer yet because I still didn't have my first client. My goal is to become a freelance Web Developer.
At me moment I working on my own website because I can't hope to find a client if I don't even exist on the Internet.
I already have some kind of prototype but the problem is that it looks really bad in my eyes because I'm anything but a designer.
So my question is if you know any resources where I can learn web design, trends, good practices, theories, anything really.2
Is it a good idea to hack the website of my previous condescending and irrational boss? and do social media attacks on their online pages as well?9
My friend @evilarcher sent me his wp website to check, I really like the design, soooo minimalistic...🤔🤔😂
He sent me a link that runned it on localhost 😂😂👏7
Downloaded my website backup from godaddy
Opened backup file (many folders inside)
Opened folder /va and found 1 file with my website name
Opened the file and inside
I didnt know my website was a blackhole
I work in a company and they asked me to develop the official website, jointly a colleague. The boss gave us an horrible background, he says that he likes it. My collegaus designed a hideous navbar, so I drew a new navbar (still horrible but better) and I sent it to him. He said that his one is perfect and we don't have enough time to implement the mine. And in all this I'm (maybe) a webmaster, not a graphic designer. In the attached pic, my navbar is the below one1
It's not my intention to start a web technology war so be nice do not do that 😁
Short Info: I'm "desktop programmer" (if that word exists) in either C # or Java 😎
question: I would like to create my own website, just simple to start with and maybe expand it later with eg. Arduino temperature meter
I have a look at 2 programming languages that I can build it in, Js or PHP. I just do not know which one to choose, I'm probably the most to Js, but what are the pros and cons of these 2 and / or is there a completely different programming language I have to take a look at?16
So our project decided to create a newsletter. For some reason, I was tasked with writing it, includig layout, recepient database etc.
It is the first newsletter, it is urgent and it is supposed to be send to all the people who so far participated. Means: there was never a "sign up here for a newsletter" thingy on the website. Hence, there is also no "unsubscribe" button.
One could kind of "hotfix" this by making a field, like "enter your email adress here to unsubscribe" and then I get a notification and remove the people from the list. Fine by me. Not so many ppl atm so we got time to set it up properly then.
My boss decides it is my job now to implement the stupid unsubscribe button... I am not the website admin. I have nothing to do with the goddamn website. We have ppl in another city, being paid to manage the goddamn website and it would take them just a few minutes to set the stupid button up, since they know what they are doing and I am not.
I told them from the start: I don't do websites. I have nothing to do with them, I don't want to have anything to do with them. We have people for this.
Why the F is it my job now to implement that stupid button?!
And even when I tried to look into how the other formulas which do similar things are set up: oh you don't have permissions to access that. Lovely!
FAK this shiet <.< It is not my fking job.5
I was searching for explanations to the topic quantum physics, when I found this website...
Anyway they insinuate what they want to do...3
Finally managed to get my website up and running after a week of going back and forth with Hostgator. I'm really excited about it even though I know it's not quite ready and needs more work.
Even so, please have a look and tell me what you think :)
Welp, who wants to see my first website? tiny.cc/copo
It was made almost entirely during english class, for blocked games. It's the most hits I've ever got one a site I've made. But the best part? I achieved my goal: respect from the teachers. And why did they respect me? *Because it got blocked*. Yup, across the entire county (our county is one of the top five in the USA for schools I believe). We, as the students, found a way around the teacher's technological control, and finally got some technological freedom. Just a small story.
P.S. not named by me, and sorry bout that JS redirect. I redesigned it while I was supposed to be writing about the theme but the original is couchpotato not cppremium. I can't change it now but I'll change it later. I trust you guys know how to stop it without me changing it though :)8
Website looks crap but marketing be like "no one visits it anyway".. maybe if it wasn't shit and had information on it people would visit it2
Got a pretty epic message yesterday:
"Hi, I just had a friend on phone and we got a rather "simple" idea for a website.
Just a user ID and a password users would pay for. Then they would get access to their videos.
We are willing to pay 350 bucks for a working version and up to 680 depending on the result at the end of the project.
Know anyone that could be interested? Or would you be?
Have a good night. "
Sometimes I feel like giving my client a Craigslist-frontend website. Saves me shit load of time to pretty up.
website: fill in all fields
user: john doe
kill blood, texas, 751454, usa
me: when the website says street name, we meant the name of your faking street!
What is your prefered language for website dev? I wanna start making my own website but im at a blank point on this side of developing ? :)25
So... I'm finally diving into web design.
Vue for front-end and codeigniter for backend, what do you think?11
website dev on hold cause i am waiting for texts/images.
client: why i dont hear from you. site will launch on oct. 1st.(real: late oct.)
me: on hold tull i get those things from you as we said in mid aug.
client: i am really pissed of. you got 90% of the stuff so work with it.
the thing is im waiting for some images to create the design. now i am really pissed of. hate clients that wanna tell you how to make your job. what would you do?3
I discovered the Source Making website a couple weeks ago, it's awesome.
It gives you clear tutorials on the essential design patterns and refactoring techniques complete with example situations and code. Love it!3
I am working on a small project to help out a small theatre group. The guy who created their website decided to create it with horrible UI and UX. I plan to confront him with notes on how to improve the overall experience of navigating their website and if all goes to plan, I will help rewrite the entire website.1
What do you put on your website these days if you don't have a service to offer or recent projects to show off?
Imho portfolios are just weird (i'm also not in the need of one) and my domain choice (milotic.io) was made kinda drunken, too.
Is it illegal to run ads in the background of website. Without images and sounds.
I know a little website that use this but idk if it's realy legal...10
You should have a giant snapshot of your software at the beginning of your website.
Even if you're an open source project. Some linux DE don't do this!
We're not in 1995.1
Is there any free software or website one can use where it takes a screenshot or page and you can mark areas on it, then add comments to those areas? (kind of like powerpoint comments, but without the awkward canvas limitation)
Then later the viewer sees instead of huge message bubbles, only those marked areas on top of the screenshot and when he hovers them - sees the comment pop up somewhere.
I remember QA having something like that, but don't remember anything about it. (I think it had a palmtree logo?..)
It would be amazingly useful for clients to just go through screenshots and marking on it "that looks nasty, put ajit pai on it".8
suggestions for a high school kid's personal website? i was cool, eye-catching things so even people who aren't hiring to be entertained8
Really cool website letting you re-live the first moon landing of Apollo 11 which happened exactly 50 years ago - https://apolloinrealtime.org/11/
I though of a great way to explain to an absolute beginner why you need 3 file types to build a website:
It's like building a house
HTML handles the structure of the house
And CSS, like the decorators that make the house look pretty6
I'm writing a website for a café and I'd like to use a new tool for generating content and managing it. Only real requirement is a SCSS pre-processor and maybe built-in Auth.
Can you guys give me Name suggestion for a website?
Under the name we will create mobile apps and websites. It will free to use for anyone.
Preferred .com domain
Thanks in advance :)11
Designer: The web design muset be beautiful, clean and follow modern trends.
Me: Actualy no, design should be just functional part of website. There is no need to be beautiful, clean and has nothing to do with modern graphic trends. Sad truth is almost nobody, besides css galleries, cares.
I want to start a little website, for my ideas and other stuff but I can't convince myself to use WordPress and I'm kind of lazy to code my website because I'm afraid of security problems... Do you have any advice to make a choice ?12
Is GoDaddy any good? I've seen that Google has opened .dev domains floodgate and I was wondering about starting my own page. Dunno which hosting service to choose and if I even should make my own website considering I'm not a Web Dev 😅19
Brother: (early morning *getting excited*) I want to create a website like that of YouTube but having features of facebook like chatting etc. Let's do a project and create that using html(entirely). I will call my friends and we will write all the html codes on a paper and then type that on notepad.
Pretty annoyed with making my first deployed website responsive. Made certain changes but still appearing weird.......
I just built a website with Hugo. And I love it. Got a request for a certain set of pages but because of the workflow the one thing I could dynamically load wasn't worth a whole wordpress site.
So I built it with Hugo instead. I played with it a little last week so I could get around but I got good this week and damn it's powerful.
I think I'm in love. I wish more projects at work could be built in Hugo.12
is there a way to render a website at a high resolution (larger than screen) like 8k? Only header-screenshot or so3
Hm, is **website** progressive enhancement still a thing?
Please be welcome into slaughter discussion. I just read some articles today and i'm realy curious what your thoughts are.17
So we have a website on our server fir company related things and I wanted to build a projectplanner so my boss told me I should use serialized arrays since we already have a database with all the projects and the id. So I told my boss that I want to make a new database since serialized arrays are bad and slow and he said just do it anyway. So I did and after I did it I told him its slow and he told me do it with a new databse. And I was like LOL but I didnt mind since I learned a lot rebuilding it + its much faster now and I didnt have to do anything anyways so it was a win win :)1
I'm interested in learning machine learning so I've started delving into it. I wanted to make a bloggish website that tracked my progress but for the life of me, I can't do web design. :/5
Client is a group of designers and asks for a website reskin, we made the previous one.
They spend like 4 months fixing up their design and after they're done, we developer look at it and decide what can be done and what can't be done and we go on like this for a few days.
At the end, I begin the development of the website, the data structure is already done, it's there and it's working.
The design is there, we all asked to not modify ANYTHING about it.
After I finish making the website, which is kinda unusable bc of the UI, they decide to completely redo the about page (which took like 3 days to get done)
After all it's done they just say "ok, now we gotta just add animations and transitions between all of the pages"
It took like 3 months to finish...
Is it too hard for clients to actually have a specific idea on what they want to do?
Making a personal website for prospective employers to see my resume and code. I am currently a sophomore computer science student. What got you guys/gals hired?3
Guys, what's your favorite website and why? Mine is github because I like to search for interesting open source projects.2
We got an assignment to build our own website (with HTML, CSS and JS) a few months ago. Now guess who's been procrastinating for around 3 months and has to do it in one day now.
Does anyone have tips on how to avoid procrastination?8
Why is it that when your making a perfect clients website he requests a really hard job 2 do, you do it, then they find something really cool on codepen.io and all your work is 4 nothing, I'm gonna start working for hours now.....
Every day and especially at night in my bed, I go through different websites that talk about the web design and development. It's very important to me .. To learn and always be informed of trends.
What is the website that you like the most? The one you read every day and you think to be the only one to know ? Mine is : Website Deconstruction ( http://websitedeconstructions.com ) . A website that dissects others to understand how they are constructed and how they work.
A really good one.3
It would be a pleasure for me if you guys would give me a rate for a website ive just uploaded to the live server. It's responsive but german. If you have better options, for some functionalities, i am open for better ideas.
I finally have a vServer again, now I need to fill it with 'life': secure it, build a small website and mailserver.
The main idea is to have some basics to look more professionell. I'd love any tip and idea how idk, save work before I run into stupid beginner mistakes, or things you had good experiences working with when you had similar tasks? :)
My first public website... Please don't say how it is bad because I know believe me :) There is probably XSS and SQL innection attacks so feel free to play with it. Also it is on serbian but you will figure your way in and out (if you even open the website)6
Anyone here familiar with nginx site configuration?
I'm trying to set up it so that my nginx server serves a static website on my domain, redirects users attempting to access via HTTP to HTTPS and proxies a locally hosted server to a subdomain.
At the moment I'm struggling with how I can make both work as you can only bind a port once.
If you know resources that could help me setting up the domains, I'd appreciate it very much.
Thanks in advance. ;)10
- using github/desktop
- working on a little personal testing website
- learning and understanding CSS/HTML
there's basically nothing at the moment, just a proof-of-competence-to-myself thing right now
(original repo name i know hhh)
happy i have somewhere to host my web stuff1
This Monday the website I created for my school will go online at 10:45 and about 50 students will start accessing it all at the same time making 20/30 requests each in the timespan of a couple of minutes.
I am very much afraid that it'll go offline or break. And I put my name on it so hopefully everything goes well and Heroku doesn't suddenly decided to restart the server because there's too much traffic.
TBH, I've been a bit stupid, I could easily reduce the number of requests per user. Might do it before Monday.6
Just this tiny website, that's a complete database of all cars ever created, of course with every variant and different versions through the years.
Supposed to be searchable, so that a you can compare cars with in a class or by features or something completely different.
And final icing, it should have crawlers, searching used-car-sites, to inform the user of changes is price over time.3
My friend asked me to forward his website along with Github profile to Software Engineers to take a look at his current profile. https://github.com/DawidCyron
What do you think about the code? Seems good to me, but I would like to know what you think. Also, with 2 more Java API projects and 2 Mobile Apps, could he try applying for Junior jobs?5
I just saw a rant about a fix price website request and I wonder if anyone creates websites for a fix price in some cases.2
Was your personal website completely finished when you decided to get it live? What did you include in it?
Sorry for the stupid questions.11
A Website where the user alterts us about a defect on his printer.
There are predefined categories (things like error messages in the printer display, issues with the prints, issues with paper jams, issues with noise and so on) maybe around 10 to 20 categories.
They decide which fields are shown when the user selects it.
Should I do a Dropdown? List field? Radio buttons?
Tech: PHP, Slim Framework, fontsawesome, resulting in a mail sent to our ticket system to pre-fill form items to avoid 1st level support...1
The world is going crazy behind KSIvsLoganPaul fight...now I am thinking...I should have made a website for live updates...6
What is the best way to write an 'About Me' page on your website that doesn't nake you sound arrogant, but doesnt sell you short either?3
Sometimes there are moments when you feel like having a superpower as a coder.
Had to work with this shitty website. Completely not designed for vertical screens. Scrum board. When using it on a vertical screen, you would have to scroll down for ages to find the last few columns down there.
Quickly opened the web editor. Added display flex and flex-direction row. Looks better. Great. New grease monkey script. Added those commands. It is completely nice to work with this website now. Time investment? Less than 10 minutes.
Sometimes, just sometimes, being a coder is magic and I wonder how normal people are using the internet.2
My employer wants me to add wordpress blogs to a non-wordpress website..
the fux, is this even possible?4
What do you guys put on your about section on a website. I'm a student so don't have much past experience but I want a website to refer people to5
The first "real" website I made with a friend. Hope to spread the message about climate change!
Idea, a devrant type website that can be split into different work groups, animation, programming, composing, ect. and then subgroups for more specific jobs, like Reddit and DevRant fused together.7
Not a rant, a question.
So I am planning to build an ecommerce website for my business, is it sensible to make it from scratch and if not then what existing solutions I can use
Urghhhhhgg, really confused3
Our current agency website has 5 pages and a shitty design available in French and English, so I want to remake it completely, my question is: Does making it a 1 page website could result us to lose clients?6
I was wondering how do you guys who work or have worked as freelancers price your websites/projects.
I never had a client before and I don't want to spoil my first chance by pricing too high or too low.
I've heard people asking for 500 dollar or 2000 dollars, depending on how much work and time is involved.
How much would you ask for a simple personal website or a restaurant website?
Thank you very much for your time )5
I want to setup a website, I have a few questions.
What's SEO and how does it affect my website?
Where should I setup?
Also how should I set it up to prevent hackers from damaging my site?11
Back in the early noughties I had an interview for the new job. A couple days before the interview I've visited that company's website. There was search input. Of cause I've entered some hacky things into it. And after several attempts I hacked it. The site was down in an infinite loop.
Two days later I told interviewer about the bug and what I did to reproduce it. He was surprised and checked the website. It was still down the same way.
I was totally ashamed. I was supposed to report that problem somehow.
BTW I got the job:)
So I was working on this website for a hackathon.
Finally the website is online ☺
Does anyone know about SEO?
Do you guys have a portfolio website? If so can you leave a link :)
And What do recruiters look at when they are browsing the website?12
I came across a website today when I was searching for some banking related stuff on Google and this is what happened...
Types search term in Google
Gets the results
Opens a result in a new tab
Finishes reading it and clicks back
Tab refreshes to go the website's home page (What!?)
Clicks back again
Refreshes to the same result page (seriously?)
Google home page (wtf?)
Website home page (again?)
Result page (NO! I'M DONE)
Closes the tab
What sort of wicked loop did I get myself into? Did the website devs ever think how frustrated it will be if they ever open their own page?
And what a clever technique to open Google home page for people who keep on pressing the back button! 👏👏 /s1
One thing I realized about my workplace: when you're given a new template to be used for an existing website project, do NOT use the included CSS files. Seems like it would be better to just manually change the looks of the website to make it similar to that template, lest you want some alignment stuff to break.
Plus, it seems that I don't even need to meet all the design requirements, because whenever I try to do that, clients tend to forget the design they originally gave and request for all these changes.
One more month... One more month and I'm off to bootcamp to properly learn.1
When you create a website how do you get it with your choosen domain in the internet, do you need own server or something?8
How much does a website cost ?
This handy tool (http://howmuchdoesawebsiteco.st/) easily calculate the cost of a website. But, do you find these prices reasonable ?5
Why is it that a website thinks that it would be a good idea to completely block a user from using their website if they have an adBlocker? Now don't get me wrong, I can understand them wanting to put up a message maybe saying "hey we make money off the ads that are displayed, please don't block them." But FFS give the user the choice to close the window and continue on if they don't want to disable their adBlocker! I know personally I just choose to leave the site and go elsewhere for content when I encounter those things!
Don't force me to disable and then refresh!2
How my family thinks websites are made:
"I need a website with a good theme with a community and blog system".
PHP Warning: Creating default object from empty value in ...
PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined method stdClass::bar() in ...2
What are the best practices when making a blogging website?
I'm creating an addition to my personal website to include a blog, and want to follow the best practices for it. Do I just save everything in a JSON? Or do I just make every entry a "page" in Gatsby/React? What have you all done? Would love to see some examples.4

I need some help. For a website with some basic client login and profile, some details from client etc, what is the best web stack?
I know ReactJS and Node quite well. But React for this is probably overkill. What do you guys suggest?5
What are the mistakes / error one can do while creating a website ?
PS : Need to find out errors on existing website as a part of project13
tldr: I am looking for recommendations for a basic website for my parents. GOTO question;
My parents have a small (offline) business. They have a website to give some general information and list their weekly offers.
When I felt that what has come out of the website-building tool (you know, clicky clicky stuff) looked a bit too early 2000's and is a total ripoff for what you get (almost 20€ per month), I created something with Google Sites for them. Feel free to roast me, but web development is not my field and now it looks much more modern, is mobile friendly and does what it is supposed to do. Weekly offers are edited in a google sheets file, which is embedded in the website. Not great, but this way my mom doesn't have to deal with editing a tables on the page - trust me, it won't look good. This also meant they could downgrade the hosting package to discard the clicky-tool and just the domain (maybe 1€ per month). The website itself is hosted for free by Google.
Now to the question:
Can you recommend a good alternative to the current solution (Google Sites)?
It should be cheap (<3€/month incl. domain) and my parents should be able to make some basic changes (just text in predefined locations). I am not afraid to get my hands dirty - I can deal with some HTML, CSS, JS - but I don't want to sink a lot of time into this. No need for analytics or the like. Maybe a newsletter would be cool (with the weekly offers), but that's just a random thought of mine and definitely not necessary.

How much cost to design a restaurant website?

Two years without working on web dev. Planning to build a website.
Any frameworks that i should test?8
Just typed a comment for like 5 minutes on website version of devRant.
The red of the button got marked on my eyes, so I have now an area of the eyes that sees blue tint.
I'm building a website with Django just to learn, so far I have login/sign up and even a chat I cloned from github, I don't know what else to do with it, any ideas?4
Until the old Dev left this team, I never had to handle any of the website end of things. Now he's gone, I've had to look through his code, and Jesus Christ I didn't know you could be hired to do things without knowing what functions are. It's just long strings of PHP includes.3
That feel when you have a deadline for a website project which requires content from someone in the team and after months of asking for the content they give it to you a few days before a demo day and guess what?
They freaking forgot to send you everything needed so some of the images are blank and hidden and one of the pages has dummy text.
Even the higher ups chasing him, didn't help.4
I've deployed a website with jokes, a personal project, in two languages, Greek and English, using Django.
It doesn't have many jokes yet, but I was just wondering if you guys could take a look and give me your opinion. I'm very new to web development and it would be really helpfull...6
Managed to apply Particle.js to my personal website today. It's a lot of fun to play with and you can make some pretty interesting effects. Recommend it to everybody.
Only problem is that Chrome doesn't seem to like this library very much. It doesn't start on Chrome unless your website is on a server (you can always use Live Server or something like that from your code editor). Or you can always try a different browser. It seems to be only a Chrome problem.
Can't wait to get my site live and hear what you guys think. Though, don't expect too much please.8
I thought I might give bootstrap a chance by recreating an existing website. Problem is that this website is "simpler" with a carousel and a dark mode toggle being the few more complicated features, so it might be even faster to simply write the CSS myself and get my hands dirty. Using bootstrap for this seems more and more overkill, the more I look at it. On the other hand I know bootstrap already takes much care of responsiveness and vendor-prefixes and so on. What have I gotten myself into with bootstrap...21
So I found this really cool website but I have no idea who owns it, any idea how I could find out something like this?
I am thinking about setting up a personal website again. Question is; 4 years ago i made a site that i still quite like the design of, but it is made with php.
So, should I update that one, or should I start over and use something else (been working a bit with node/express/jade lately f.e.)?6
Tell me please, how to use devRant as desktop-website with my tablet. How can I avoid the app? Dont like to install it on every device ...9
Sometimes the best thing to do is to wait and see if it solves it's own issue.
Offer to build a website for free for you friend "Fooius Barius." After showing it to them immediately buy "fooiusbarius.com"
Any ideas on how aviation related website shall look like? I've lost all of my ideas...
Blog-like website isn't the best idea since it won't be a blog.16

Not sure if I should implement Bootstrap on my website for cross device scalability, grid system placement and basic animations, or just stick to raw CSS3... Any suggestions?5
If I'm not ready with my article I'm currently writing for my wordpress website, I never save it as a draft. I always schedule it, because only then I care about finishing my article! ;)
Maybe not as much a question as a request for advice.
What I'm looking for is a free website hosting service that preferably lets you import your own source code. If it's got paid services for access to things like your own custom url and such, that's just fine. :) It's a for a hobby group project with people that aren't necessarily programmers in any way.
What we've checked so far is just Svenska Domäner, which have a site builder tool, but the custom source code feature is a paid service.
Since there's so much to choose from in this field I thought I'd check with some of the people I trust the most in these kinds of things. :) Any good suggestions?16
I want to build an e-commerce website only for the developers. What features do you suggest? Any thought would be welcomed.7
I'm going to make a website and I want to know what CMS is better to use.
I've tried to use wordpress but it isn't the best of all...
I want to try more (like joomla or drupal).
What do you recommend?12
Todays website fail, looks like someone is using a NFS mount for the site:
"Deprecated: Non-static method PageLinesTemplate::current_admin_post_type() should not be called statically, assuming $this from incompatible context in /nfs/c03/h03/mnt/166492/domains/makerspace.com/html/wp-content/themes/pagelines/admin/class.options.metapanel.php on line 30"
Can we say that "a basic website is a type of app that serves documents", implying a website is more specific than an app, and the most common type of data served is in the form of a document (html, pdf, json, xml).
I'm trying to see how this argument does for/against flat-file cms'es in specific/ general cases per type of app/ website.1
Seems like everyone here is a web developer. As someone who had never made a website before (I do C# Unity things) except a hello world calculator in notepad, what's the best way to make a small website with a few pages?
It will be mostly to post my projects, like an online resume. I'd like to make look like material design on Android.
Should I just go and start experimenting with css and html in a code editor until I get something I like? Or are there any frameworks or tools to make the job easier?
I developed my first functional Website"yaay", ofc it's offline.
Is there any way to share this "frond-end" website without put it online?
For example to my far away friends and so on.. Hope you can help.3
Hey guys )
Hope all of you are having a great time )
I've been away for a while tryin to "finish" my personal website and now I think it's more or less "finished".
What cheap hosting provider would you recommend or use?
I would like to get my webite live as soon as possible.8
Todays website fail:

Probably a super noob question: I have a droplet on DigitalOcean with a website. What is the best to update it, make changes? My idea was to clone the droplet, make the changes and then point my domain to the new ip, but I have to wait for hours for the changes to take place...4
9 Ways to Improve Your Website in 2020
Online customers are very picky these days. Plenty of quality sites and services tend to spoil them. Without leaving their homes, they can carefully probe your company and only then decide whether to deal with you or not. The first thing customers will look at is your website, so everything should be ideal there.
Not everyone succeeds in doing things perfectly well from the first try. For websites, this fact is particularly true. Besides, it is never too late to improve something and make it even better.
In this article, you will find the best recommendations on how to get a great website and win the hearts of online visitors.
Take care of security
It is unacceptable if customers who are looking for information or a product on your site find themselves infected with malware. Take measures to protect your site and visitors from new viruses, data breaches, and spam.
Take care of the SSL certificate. It should be monitored and updated if necessary.
Be sure to install all security updates for your CMS. A lot of sites get hacked through vulnerable plugins. Try to reduce their number and update regularly too.
Ride it quick
Choose a quality hosting provider
In many respects, both the security and the speed of the website depend on your hosting provider. Do not get lost selecting the hosting provider. Other users share their experience with different providers on numerous discussion boards.
Content is king
Content is everything for the site. Content is blood, heart, brain, and soul of the website and it should be useful, interesting and concise. Selling texts are good, but do not chase only the number of clicks. An interesting article or useful instruction will increase customer loyalty, even if such content does not call to action.
Broadcasting should not be one-way. Make a convenient feedback form where your visitors do not have to fill out a million fields before sending a message. Do not forget about the phone, and what is even better, add online chat with a chatbot and\or live support reps.
Refrain from unpleasant surprises
Please mind, self-starting videos, especially with sound may irritate a lot of visitors and increase the bounce rate. The same is true about popups and sliders.
Next, do not be afraid of white space. Often site owners are literally obsessed with the desire to fill all the free space on the page with menus, banners and other stuff. Experiments with colors and fonts are rarely justified. Successful designs are usually brilliantly simple: white background + black text.
With such a dynamic pace of life, it is important to always keep up with trends, and the future belongs to mobile devices. We have already passed that line and mobile devices generate more traffic than desktop computers. This tendency will only increase, so adapt the layout and mind the mobile first and progressive advancement concepts.
Your visitors should be your priority. Use human-oriented terms and concepts to build navigation instead of search engine oriented phrases.
Do not let your visitors get stuck on your site. Always provide access to other pages, but be sure to mention which particular page will be opened so that the visitor understands exactly where and why he goes.
The site can be compared to a house - you always need to monitor the performance of all systems, and there is always a need to fix or improve something. Therefore, a technical audit of any project should be carried out regularly. It is always better if you are the first to notice the problem, and not your visitors or search engines.
As part of the audit, an analysis is carried out on such items as:
● Checking robots.txt / sitemap.xml files
● Checking duplicates and technical pages
● Checking the use of canonical URLs
● Monitoring 404 error page and redirects
There are many tools that help you monitor your website performance and run regular audits.
I hope these tips will help your site become even better. If you have questions or want to share useful lifehacks, feel free to comment below.
