One day a client sent me gifts and a sweet letter just because they loved their new website so much. I just about cried. I work in an industry where acknowledgment and thankfulness by clients are extremely rare. 😱😭8
A client called me today saying their custom website I built for them is down. It just shows a 403 error now. They said they just wanted to update the prices. I asked what changes they made before it crashed. She said, "I couldn't figure out how to change the prices, so I just installed Wordpress, and now it doesn't work!" They completely deleted the entire website using cPanel and replaced it with a partially installed Wordpress.🤦19
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
++111111110 on devrant. This is my moment to shine, my account completely blew up. I am the Elon Musk of devrant. I am the coolest bitch on this website, bow before me you peasants!
... wait, is this binary?7
I’m a 25 year old female navigating into coding with no friends who are coders. I feel very alone in this journey and am reaching out on this website to make friends and get advice to become. A developer. I am currently doing an internship and don’t have a job and my mentor is very arrogant and mean and just tells me to google everything and won’t answer questions. It seems like the prospect of ever getting a job or being good enough is hopeless. My mentor is very intimidating and discouraging. I need some support.63
Someone on a Facebook group asking how they can make a video auto-play with sound at maximum when a visitor hits the home page.
Me: Here’s how: Log into your site via SSH and cd to the docroot. Type “rm -rf” and hit Enter. Then throw your laptop in the river and go work at McDonald’s. Because if you are stupid enough to ask this question, you are too stupid to be allowed to own a website.7
Me in 1996:
<body>My first website! I'm gonna be a website developer!</body>
Me in 2021: I have no idea what all that stuff in Node is for. All I know is that my boss says I need Node and gulp to compile this website to add a comma to a paragraph on a page for this client.
*a metric ton of errors appears*
Manager: I just created a new ticket! The website flashes when you reload it!
Dev: Yes, that's typically what happens when you reload a website.
I worked at a startup. They wanted to "save" money. So they hired a relative of "Fred" named "Bubba". Bubba made a custom website. Like hand built gifs and who knows how hand crafted html. It was fine for a time. Then somebody was wondering why nobody was calling us at the company. No customers. Another relative named "George" (who was actually a business major) looked at the website. It had been hacked and replaced with Jedis fighting Sith Lords. Me and another engineer named "Zeus" said "fuck this shit" and said "we are redoing this shit".
So I logged into godaddy (I know, shitty) and installed Wordpress (kinda shitty). I proceeded to turn wordpress into a half decent page. Wiped out the shit that was there, reused images as it made sense. Created more images. Reduced images to 80% quality to take loading size from 10MB to <1MB. Then I also proceeded to do SEO work and get the website listed properly within about a month. Customers started calling all the time. I had a simple contact form that barely gets any shit on it due to captcha. The was 5 years ago. I left 3 years ago (still help them on weekends) and nobody has done shit with the website. They are still getting calls and it hasn't been hacked.
We don't talk to Bubba. He didn't know what the fuck he was doing. I wonder if he still does websites for his relatives. I honestly had no clue what I was doing, but my take on the approach was easier to maintain and even George and Zeus and the new manager "Ralph" can maintain it, kinda. Went from shitty static website to full on dynamic and interactive. Yeah, I know, "dynamic". But the manager was happy.
Sometimes you just do what you gotta do in addition to doing all the electrical and software engineering for a company.6

website publishers ary whining about adblockers, but keep shoving so much shit down our throats that even a dozen browser addons can't make the web usable. the internet was such a great place once, where did we go wrong?
(rhetorical question. it's when we made access to the internet so easy, that every 100% tech-illiterate idiot could get online.)14
> Amazon like website - 9 dollars
> Webdev homework. - 50 dollars
> Spelling mistakes. - have no price
Freelancing can be so bizarre, I'm 50 bucks wealthier now tho.2
I was an hour deep into filling out forms on a ridiculous background check website when Windows decides to go BSOD.
Fuck Windows 11. To death.16
We're not the wrong ones here...
I consider this a failed IQ test, so the website should just ban the user.8
Ah yes, write your own fucking website crawler in PHP and deoptimize so hard that it uses some gigabytes of RAM and takes about 1 hour to crawl the very own website it's running on.
Oh and don't forget to download every single image and video file in order to "crawl" it for extremely valuable text content.
What a genius move! I'm really impressed.7
I SENT YOU THE EXACT SIGNUP URL ON NETLIFY
I TOLD YOU STEP BY STEP WHAT WOULD HAPPEN, AND HOW I CAN TRANSFER THE SITE TO YOU
AND NOW YOU COME TO ME COMPLAINING YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND??!?!?!?!
fucking toxic clients I swear, never again
this is what I get for doing something for free for an acquaintances friend
if you can't handle ownership of your own website, maybe get the hell out of the internet
The worst part about being a web developer is when clients ruin a perfectly good website by asking for dumb things, even though you told them it's either:
a) near impossible
b) not useful/helpful to users
c) deprecated/no longer used code/techniques
e) will harm performance and SEO
d) just plain stupid8
So, you want to tell me the security method used by the f*cking state of Missouri is CSS's "display: none"???
It's one job was to detect and prompt a user about not using IE on this shit for a stain website - ironically built for IE 😂
You sir, will not be missed 🥳12
Part of a banking website is broken, it has been for 2 years now..
Since I really need to use that part, I thought I would put in a formal complaint so someone might fix it..
After a few days I get an email back saying that they thought I wanted to know which browser was compatible with their banking website..
No you idiots, that isn't what I was asking, I was telling you which browsers I had used, and what the error message was in each one in turn.
So I've replied to the email, trying to explain that again in an even more idiot proof fashion I hope they can understand..
Though I thought I had written it very plainly the first time that their website was broken !10
> Be me
> Desperate for a driver
> Find nothing useful
> Oh a GitHub repo, hmmh
> '𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 ===> tinyurl.com/XXXXXX'
> It's time to report!
- The url is a redirect chain to a phishing site
- Repo is completely empty except for a single folder with 1000+ files all named after drivers, with the same 'download' link, and probably scraped website text at the bottom (probably to increase searchability)
- The 'user' joined just a couple days ago and has no other repos16
I just had to print out some bills for a colleague.
Nothing too bad you say?
Well.. She doesn't seem to care about security or privacy at all.
I opened the website of her email provider at my computer and moved away from the keyboard, so she could log in.
But instead she told me her email and password... In an office with some other colleagues... Multiple times and wrote it onto a piece of paper that the later left on my table.
After that I should look through her inbox to find the bills.
(Yup, I know a lot more about her now)
After finding and printing out her bills, she just thanked me and walked out of the office, because hey, why should I log out of her account?
It's nice that she trusts me... But that was a bit too much...4
I get a call from a client at 7 PM:
- Client: We have a business partner that just visited the website you just made for us and he said it was absolutely terrible, things are not showing up, layout is all messed up... *sends photo*. This is a VERY important new business partner and this will affect our relationship and image. Fix it NOW!
- Me: ok? I will check ... *proceed to check on several browsers and versions*
- Me: I checked on all modern browsers, cleaned cache, tried from multiple devices, it seems to be fine. What browser is your partner visiting the site from?
- Client: Idk, let me ask ...
- Client: Internet Explorer
- Me: ... that browser is not even supported anymore wth?!
- Client: We need it fixed!
- Me: ... *proceeds and hacks for IE website until 6 AM*7
Worst part of being a dev?
THERE'S A NEW FREAKIN FRAMEWORK EVERYDAY.
Where are we supposed to get time to learn everything the job applications require? And even worst, have 2 years of experience with the thing?
And how about when developing a responsive dynamic website? If you are crazy, like me, and you are the kind of dev that always wants to deliver something great, customized to the needs of your client, and that doesn't smell bootstrappy, you probably can't stand too when people ask you about time guesstimates. Especially when you are the ONLY DEV in your company.
Also, our gear is EXPENSIVE.
Sorry, I guess I'm stressed... Had to bring some work home, due to the bosses deciding to deliver a project one week early to the client, without consulting me first.
Still, luckily for me, all this bullshit can't take my love of coding away.4
Customer has thousands of clients - puts each client site under a subdomain of the main domain on a shared server. What happens to every single website when the server runs out of space?
But that'll never happen, right? We have lots of space. It certainly won't happen on day one of the main tech dev's holiday.
It's fine, there's a backup, or atleast a redirect, right
- Be me (Dev)
- Develop website for client that has an online payment integration.
- Notice there is no one for QA and testing.
- Try to raise voice about it but get shot down by management.
- Get order to push the project to production (because the deadline has arrived, therefore the project must be ready)
- Production performance has an error margin of 15% (customers getting their card over/under charged)
- Get blamed and flamed for everything cuz well, its all the dev's fault.
Got this rude ass email from an idiot client who thinks I'm solely responsible for figuring out how to link his 3rd party email/newsletter sign up form to his new website without any access to the account. He "doesn't have the time to research". Newsflash asshat, I'm not responsible for your 3rd party shit. Go contact their support. 🙄😑14
Being a complete and utter asshole does not make your website get developed any faster, so you can kindly fug off.1
I was working with this "friend" in a supposedly "partnership" way. He was handling the customer getting all the info for the product and doing all the communication.
fRiEnD: So I talked with the customer, the website will be delivered on 10th of June.
Me: yOu &%@!ing WhAt?!
*he didn't ask before if it would have been possible12
Special 2022 greetings to the last of us who still run truly static websites: update your footer template, recompile, upload.10
A web developer has started working on my windows.
How should I communicate with it that I don't want a website outside my windows? Will this be considered a covid layoff if I just throw it off the said window? 🤔
P. S. I'm talking about a spider, icymi.15
Here I am trying to get some tickets for a theater, and I noticed an interesting thing. It seems that the website holds no session persistence. In other words it doesn't check to see if the user has stopped trying to order tickets, instead it holds the seats for about 30 minutes. This is kind of stupid because when you back out, your treated as a completely new session, you have no way of trying to get back the seats you had chosen.
Sooo, what does this mean? It means that I can start selecting a bunch of seats and continue selecting a bunch of seats. There appears to be no server-side checks to prevent someone from just booking the entire theater.
Soooooo, what does this mean? I could potentially spam the entire country's theaters (any that use this website as a booking system) and make it impossible for people to book seats through this website.
What do you guys think? Is this a bug or feature?7
Why does Scrum feel like micromanagement?
I seriously hate daily standup, ours go on for half an hour, sometimes longer and I have to listen to completely unrelated shit I don't know anything about. I cannot explain how disconnected I feel. I'm the only dev working on their website. Some days I don't even need to check in, I have nothing to say.26
after publishing a few apps, building some websites, developing some basic operating systems, participating in a summer learning program at google and having got a job managing the computer science department’s website, today i start my intro to computer science class.
god i hate python6
Just do it!™️
Thinking about writing an app? just do it!
Thinking about creating a website? Just do it!
Thinking about the game? You just lost!7
So...Worked my butt off to have a website developed by a certain date client and I agreed on. Finished the site 3 weeks ago and sent dev link. Client has been completely silent; unreachable by email (I sent 5 in past 3 weeks) and phone (left 2 voicemails and a message with his receptionist today). In ALL five emails I told him I needed the email addresses he wants used to route his sales leads to...Got nada.
So today I seen that the lead forms have been tested on the website. Dude can't get back to me for 3 effing weeks, BUT can test his lead forms.. You know, without the lead email addresses that i asked for 5x. Ugh, idiot!!!2
I pay over $100 per year for Apple's piece of shit developer program and the app store connect website isn't even accessible right now.

I fucking hate Reddit
Because I don’t interact with other peoples post too much but do so when the post is mine, I’m considered spammer.
The 90/10 rule is ridiculous.
This morning I got banned from r/internetisbeautiful because of this stupid rule.
Not because my website is not beautiful, hell, it got thousands upvotes. But because I used the same domain for different unrelated projects, same way you can have different GitHub pages under one user.
Fuck this, fuck18
Dear customer, disregarding the bullshit your agency has dumped into Figma, I hereby deliver a clean, minimalist, and usable website without carousel sliders, chatbots, call-to-action teasers for newsletter signup, and muted auto-play videos consuming your end users' bandwidth.
One day you will understand and be grateful, too!3
2022 Dev Goal: Find a way to retire early so I never have to build another website or write another line of code again. It’s been over 25 years and I’m just done and over it.11
I used to work for a company that had a main website and a lightweight app. LW app was distributed to partners and added to other sites using an iframe.
Someone decided a requirement was to retain the shopping cart for anonymous users. Some dev thought the best way to do that was to issue auth cookies to anonymous users.
The auth cookie issued by the LW app was actually for the main site. A few users for LW app decided to just come to main site to make a purchase. Since they already had an auth cookie (issued from LW app), they were never prompted to log in, create an account, or use guest checkout on the main site. They were still able to complete their order and we had their shipping address, but we didn’t have their email address so we couldn’t contact them about their order.
Customer service had no way to email customers if something went out of stock or if there was a product recall. CS would have to call these customers and ask for email addresses. Good luck getting anyone to answer or return a call nowadays. Customers were asking where their confirmation email was. The admin website was polluted with “users” that had the placeholder email for non-logged in users.
This happened because of a combination of an understaffed and overextended engineering department. Of course when something goes bad it’s going to be bad.
Me; Develops website. Website is done.
Client; we want an english version as well!
Me; implements english version.
Client; we want to go live but without the english version for now
*Fkc gmfbl gdddmn*4
Probably developing a complex food ordering website and client just stole the website and didn’t pay as it turns out our PM didn’t let the client sign a contract. Can’t sue as we have no legal binding documents.
We did managed to get access to the database and decided to change our passwords manually, but like I don’t get paid much for this2
FINALLY fixed a stupid website issue. Absolutely nothing to do with my job, but it's also no-one else's job - the website was apparently contracted out years ago and everyone just let it go when they saw this thing.
...also 'finally' refers to the fact that it's been bugging me since I interviewed several months ago. I spent longer finding the thing I was looking for than I did fixing it2
De-duping drama continues. Background: stakeholder marked a bunch of records as “do not use” and didn’t realize/didn’t care about the impact on other systems. Many of those are active user accounts.
Stakeholder: What if we ask the user to create a new website account?
Me: they can’t register a new account of the email was used already. Are you expecting me to delete all those web accounts so the users can start over with their current email? Or are you saying you’re going to email 400 people and tell them to get a new email address and create a new account? Don’t force users to do extra steps to fix your mess.
Continued from: https://devrant.com/rants/5403991/...3
Operations: Can you exclude some user records for the website? These are obsolete and we don’t want users to access these anymore.
Me: So what are you using to indicate the record is obsolete?
Ops: We changed the last name field to say “shell record - do not use.” Sometimes it’s in the first name. Actually, it gets truncated to “shell record - do not u”.
Me: A…text field…and you’re totally ok with breaking user accounts…ok ok cool cool
Not cool 😳😬🤬 I’m not causing more chaos because your record keeping has gotten messy12
relative: can you help me with my website?
me: ok, what do you need?
them: okay, i have this wordpress homepage that someone made for me and actually, when you go to my image gallery, i only want a simple "back" button that leads to the main page. but i cannot add it via wordpress functionality.
me: okay, i'll make you this button in under 10 minutes, given it doesn't require any fancy design. but i have no experience with messing with wordpress so far... let me check what their templates look like
(after 1 hour): wtf is this mess 😭
...since they only had their production website, i didn't dare to change anything and told them they best hire that dev again 🙈10
that I did NOT expect.
Opening a website in chrome. Laptop's transforms into a drone and tries to lift off my desk and fly away with its fans. I see warning popups telling me that CPU Tº is 100ºC.
Opening website in FF. Laptop calmly opens it up and raises Tº from 50ºC to only 75ºC.
And here I thought that Chrome is fine-tuned for anything you can throw at it.
And the website really has nothing fancy in it... Just some text to read, images to see in the background and some buttons to click on.
its EN version, however, does not have the laptop-heater feature installed.
I run an informational website for medical students. We just got hacked. Fuck you and fuck you WordPress.8
Client says the styling of a particular component on their website is wrong. It looks fine to me. They can't give me an example of how it should look, or tell me what's wrong with the way it looks currently, but they want me to fix it.3
Stakeholder: Users are connecting invalid memberships to their web accounts. They shouldn’t be able to do that.
Me: Their memberships were valid when they set up the account. Your team’s record de-duping project is the issue here. You decided to mark those memberships as invalid.
I’m real tired of this stakeholder acting like this is a website issue or user error. Plus, this chaos could have been avoided if they and other involved stakeholders had just cc’d me on this de-duping project. I would have said their approach was not a good idea. But they didn’t because they want to do what’s convenient for them. If they want to be a reliable source of truth for our data, then they need to be responsible with how they’re handling that data.2
So the other day I randomly checked out a few job postings on some recruiting agency’s website. Didn’t even sign up or anything.
The very next day I get a call from them. The person on the phone tells me they noticed I had visited their website and was wondering if I was interested in applying to any of the offers. Even as a developer I was totally taken aback as to how they managed to track me down based on a single visit.
I believe I ended up on their website by clicking on a link on LinkedIn. I’m assuming it’s via LinkedIn that the managed to get my info (phone etc.). All in all I’m not extremely surprised. But to me it’s downright creepy and it makes me feel like I’m being stalked. Also it makes recruiters look totally desperate and I’m not sure I would want to entrust them with the responsibility of handling my career4
Just left my scammy dating website job and joined a startup in silicone valley, rn I’m waiting to join my standup meeting and idk what to expect 😂 y’all help me.9
Even with something as simple as pagination, it's possible to create a complete accessibility abomination. Dear designer, you've perfected your flat design style.
Fuck you! I'm not coding this.
It's a website about selling solar panels, underfloor heating etc... Not a single piece of design reminds it.7
Trying to write my intro for my page on uni's website.
It's making me frustrated cuz I'm starting to think of all the things I haven't done but I should've. 🙄 Compared to the rest, I've been very slow. 🐢
☹️🐢 is me now.2
Dear lazy Developers,
Please do your fucking jobs properly you incompetent bastards. I have no fucking mouse properly and the tab-indexes of all the fucking HTML elements are out of order on this website it's really pissing me off that I can't use certain fucking websites sue to inaccessibility.
Why can't you put in the time or the effort to give a good user experience? UX is important too you know?
That lovely moment when a client calls out of the blue at 4:30PM (we close at 5), 3 weeks before scheduled launch and says, "My website goes down tomorrow so where are we at with the new site?" So...I scrambled all day today to get the site done and it turns out they don't even own their domain or control their DNS. (facepalm) They put in a 30 day cancellation with their current provider and didn't bother to mention we had barely 2 weeks to develop a full custom site.7
I used to do some freelance work for a nonprofit. I’d do some website stuff and gallery sitting.
My friend was the gallery director. When she left, I decided to stop freelancing there and I dropped off the keys with the new director. I told them they could contact me later if they have questions about some things I implemented on the website. The new director thinks I’m a random freelancer and starts to BADMOUTH MY FRIEND, the former director.
Over a year later, the gallery assistant emails me asking about SSL warnings and cc’s the new director. WTF.
1) Those warnings were happening long before I left and long before I even started. 2) I am not your website support. I only invited contact for things I worked on. 3) The assistant already contacted Squarespace and Go Daddy for help and they gave her instructions.
I told her I didn’t set up their website and it sounds like she has the resources to resolve this on her own and she should contact Squarespace and Go Daddy if she needs more help. After all, you pay those companies for their services support and my time isn’t free.
Ukraine is the new BLM. What do I have to always see these banners on every website?
I just want to view the information on your website without being constantly reminded that the world is burning. I have CNN for that.32
Omg I changed her lipstick with one of a slightly different color I'm so random she'll go CrAaAaAzY
Use Tampermonkey to transform your colleague's pc into a chinese botnet and redirect him to some PCC website on every click forever
Yeah long story short that's how my previous firm blocked access to domains hosted by the Chinese government.3
I was assigned to maintain the website as full stack dev but the code from backend is horrible previous devs didn't use SOLID principle, DRY, KISS, or Design patterns. I had to adjust from OOP mindset to Procedural its hard to debug in this state.3
My mom told me to take the spider out instead of killing it..
So i did. We had a few drinks, pretty cool guy, said he works as a web developer.4
Government re-employment resume wizard: "Enter your job title for this job experience."
Me: "Development Manager"
Wizard: "Did you mean Biofuels/Biodiesel Technology and Product Development Manager,
Training and Development Manager, or
Wind Energy Development Manager?"
Me: "Web Development Manager"
Wizard: "Website Administrator it is!"
Me: ... bruh ...7
5 minutes later he's all proud and says "done". I think nice, check the code - and see this moron having put an <img> png in there, having blurred the text with photoshop. Short memory, anyone?2
A few days ago, a guy sent me a message on Fiverr asking me to create a website.
The good joke is that they are two engineering students who want me to do their programming exercise.
I think I’m going to lose my mind. This stupid website I’m working on keeps going down and at the worst times possible. Nothing we do seems to help. I’m again awakened in the middle of the night to attend to it and still have no good answers why. My anxiety is through the roof because I can’t get back to sleep after tonight’s outage. The client is beyond pissed even though a ton of problems would be solved if they would just get off of some legacy software and onto something more modern. But they insisted it be this way and the budget is already blown and then some even if they changed their minds. If it’s going to be that I continue losing so much sleep and sanity, I may just have to quit this job. I hate the thought of that because I always want to see things through to a happy conclusion. And I like my teammates and don’t want to let them down. But I’m too old for that kind of no-sleep development lifestyle now. Nobody’s shitty website is worth my physical and mental health.3
News sites with infinite-scrolling are so damn annoying.
A new random article I am not interested in suddenly loads under the current news article when skimming through it by dragging the scroll bar, and then throws me far down into unknown territory due to the sudden change of the height of the page.
It also happens similarly on Imgur photo galleries: when I drag down the scroll bar to quickly seek through the images, the "explore posts" section suddenly loads hundreds of "trending" and "viral" (uninteresting junk and spam) photos under the gallery, and since this adds lots of height to the page, I get pulled right into it and my window is full of such posts. Both distracting and memory-consuming.
YouTube's infinite scrolling comments and video lists are acceptable as of writing, since they are on-topic, and no off-topic "trending" spam, and they do not load too much at once, which does not throw me down too far.
Quote from https://elite-strategies.com/infini... :
> The footer of a website is like the shoes of a person, it ties the whole outfit (or website) together. Footers are awesome because it gives you a chance to tell people where to go when they reach the bottom of the page.2
I work in a big German company and we are a lot of teams building the company website.
Obviously the website is in German but almost all the devs are not German speakers, included the testers.
To make the work easier in the frontend we use sometimes the translation function of chrome and it's funny because a lot of time I got a bug opened by a tester for a wrong label because HE FUCKING FORGOT TO DISABLE THE TRANSLATION AND HE THINKS THAT THE LABEL IS IN THE WRONG LANGUAGE1
I hate web dev because I know enough to know how it "should" be done, know that it's not done that way, but also don't know enough to do it that way quickly.
Or why I spent the last 2 days scripting deployment of a website that costs 9$ a year to run, when I couldn't find a deployment script anywhere else.3
Programming has given me an insight into the inner workings of the system that defines every aspect of the modern world. I will never ever be able to look the same way at a game, website, elevator, microwave, the synced traffic lights in a city or really anything that resembles mathematical structure and was built after 1990. Seeing how my friends appreciate all these for their function I often feel like I'm missing out, but I guess they feel the same when the machines don't act as expected.2
Ok soooo boss asks me: "When is the website going to be ready?"
me: today i'll be through
4 hours later:
Site 90% done
- messed up theme
- try reinstalling theme
- 2 try
- 3rd try
- 4th try
- 5th try: success , time 6:00pm
SENDING DAILY REPORT:
Site is 90% complete and waiting for content from client
Why do Twitter, fb and Instagram need to force accounts to view public content. Like i only want to check in on som ppl without having the app or an account. This move only gets me further away from using their website/apps23
i was trying to check a purchase i made on the store's website, so i tried to login, but I can't?? like, i fill the form and press login, and it doesn't? log in??? what the actual fuck, how are you supposed to do anything like that. isn't the login page the first thing they make? how doesn't it work? how is this website still active??4
All the jQuery... in one single repository / website.
There is a good reason why we should use fucking CDNs.
Edit: Yes, these are different files in different folders.
Edit2: I've already deleted 2 other jQuery files (the library itself).4
Co-Worker: How can I see what's linked to x variable in the database for this website? [we can't see the actual back end]
Me: Do a var dump...
Co-Worker: but what var do I dump?
Every year, the worst dev experience comes right at the holidays, when website owners with big egos want to launch right on (U.S.) Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, or New Year’s Eve/Day because they think they’re that popular and important. It never occurs to them that this is the WORST time because any third party support you need for hosting, APIs, plugins, etc. is either backlogged or out of office. And because NOBODY is eagerly awaiting the redesign of ANY website on those particular dates since they are stuffing their faces and getting s&&&faced at bars and parties. Nobody will even notice that your website has changed until January 15th at the earliest.1
The W3C HTML validator just told me to add a lang attribute to the <html> tag on my website. Apparently it didn't notice, that the <html> tag was missing.3
Well.. some consultant sure managed to sell a bunch of nothing to a customer. Sure, let's move this website from one provider to another, that's more expensive on a monthly basis. That's the whole job.
When your plugins list in your newly "coded" WordPress site could use an infinity loader, that means you are probably one of those fucking two weeks fucking coding bootcamps miracles. Fuck, that's not how the website is done...
I created a live covid19 stats tracking website.😷🚀
I also just launched this site in producthunt.
So if you find this website helpful in anyway then do upvote and share :) thank you.11
This is the strangest thing that has happened to me:
I once worked as a intern at a consultancy company. Me and another junior got a brand new customer project assigned to us (bad idea I know) we spent 2 months working on that project, building a website from scratch. The customer paid 10 000€ for it. The website sucked and didn't work properly in the end.
I ended up leaving the company for unrelated reasons and left the project. A couple of months later I asked the other junior whatever happened to that project and he said that the customer seemed to have forgotten about the project and no one was working on it anymore
Like what? How do you just forget about something you paid 10 000€ for? I mean I'm happy they did as it was the worst project I've built4
Yeah, it's just a website....hosting 3B active users...
That's like a 3 person job, at most, right?12
Records Person: Can you look at this member renewal issue for system A? It’s happening on the website you maintain. Here are some recent errors to debug.
Me (web developer): I can’t reproduce the error your reporting. Is there something I’m missing? And is there an example for the staging environment?
RP: There’s another team that will manually reconcile the records in system A if they don’t match what’s in system B. So this gives users two active memberships when it should only be one.
Me: 😑 So you already know the issue is human intervention messing with the records and causing the renewal issue. This is not a website issue. It’s a data issue.1
Is it me or freelancing jobs at Freelancer are incredibly vague.
Jobs titled "build me a website" with descriptions like "I need an expert dev to work on a python website".
How the hell can you put a price and time to it?!
Am I missing something here? I'm totally new at this and it's kinda baffling.4
I was just browsing some projects to bid on and I couldn't believe my fucking eyes.
"I need website - Wix"
I just can't believe it, can we sink any lower as a species?!5
Is there a website blog where you can submit tutorials for other devs? And if so, is there a way for devs who find the article useful to (optionally) donate a tip like the price of a cup of coffee or similar?27
Oh, as a noob dev my team was using a dropdown library for our filters in the website. The code was messed up cause they kept changing the design halfway through dev and after releases and then finally after some releases, the client wanted multilevel options as a new requirement.
So I scrapped the whole thing and made my own multilevel dropdown component (there were no decent libraries then) and we used that from then on. It has many issues now that I look back (who cares about keyboard interaction right?). But that is a refactor for another day.
My dream project is to continue and improve my gaming website. It's a blog & community that's supportive of (but not limited to) female gamers. It's a positive place for gamers of any type to go, judgement free.
I have so many big ideas for the site, a forum, possibly user profiles, gaming quizzes and trivia, lots more ways to interact. I would love to do like a "find the right game for you" type of thing and have more time to blog..but I just simply don't have the time right now. :(
Baby steps for now. 🎮4
I am building my portfolio website and added a contact section. In the API call to the backend, I am logging potential API failures to Firebase Analytics. Is it ethical to include the request data (content of the contact form) in log data?5
As expected, I take a single day of PTO and I get a whole bunch of emails about stakeholders needing help and requests for website improvements. I have 14 days of PTO that I have to use in the next two months, so stakeholders gonna get a rude surprise when they see my out of office response almost every other day.1
I avoid websites that advertise with 256bit encryption and military grade stuff. This makes them kind of sketchy when they advertise this encryption that hopefully every normal website has today.1
Stakeholder: Can you investigate the problem with this user profile? We made updates to system A, but user is saying it’s the wrong info on the website.
Me: Looks fine to me. Looks like your updates just needed time to trickle down. Though, you will need to clean up this user’s data because it can cause X problems. There’s not much I can do since the site just displays info from system A.
SH: Can you delete the user’s website account and we can ask user to create a new one?
Me: …Ok, let’s try this again. It’s not necessary to delete the account and make the user create a new one. It’s not going to resolve the X problems that I mentioned. The website really needs clean data from system A.1
I found a loophole to get free courses on a popular tutor’s website. He has millions of views and more than a 100,000 students. I feel great knowing I now have free unlimited access to free courses. Hopefully they don’t realize and fix the bug.7
If you can leave one sentence to the world, what would it be.
I want to build a website where people post those sentences.14
That moment you hear an alert tone play on your computer but you can’t remember which app or website is responsible for it and you keep looking but can’t seem to find it.7
Made my own "devRant" ("inspired hehe") Android app/socialmedia^^
(still in BETA) Not targeting a specific area though. http://stardash.de:4000/
And no not a devRant replacement cuzz its not soo much dev Related :)
Layout has no similarities aT aLl :D
App can only be downloaded on my website cuzz im not 18 yet so i cant publish to the playstore (and also i kinda dislike Google and using anything Google connected in a app e.g. Firebase)
There is a build in update center in the app though.
My Pc (Linux)
Nodejs with Express
Android Studio mostly with Retrofit16
Person 1 to me: Website C needs this update.
Me: I don’t maintain that site. I only maintain websites A and B. I don’t know who does maintenance for your site.
Person 2 to me: Website D needs this update.
Me: I only maintain websites A and B.
Person 3 to me: Website E needs this update.
I love old school design. 1990's and 2000's website has their charm.
Negative side of this: I want to be frontend dev and I can only design these, so I can't make modern website without proper designer6
I want a tool called "bogo-npm" which creates a VM and then installs random versions of npm and dependencies in a cycle until the build is successful. It'll probably be the biggest optimization that dogshit ecosystem has ever seen.
I'd just let it run over night and save myself the urges to strangle every single fucking developer who added dozens of dependencies to a stupid near-static website.
And the creator of the abomination called `npm uninstall` which for some fucking reason does the same as `npm install` and then obviously fails because that's the reason I wanted to remove that package in the first place.
We need more heroes like that leftpad dude.3
Creating a stripped down version of a product is a big red flag to me (e.g. "easy/light mode").
It means the main product is too complicated; it handles too many things. Instead, shift the focus back to the core of the product by removing features.
In the our day-to-day it is completely normal to stumble upon things that used to work but now have been changed: they have been deprecated.
Deprecating and removing features should be added to any product iteration. Thus being "normal" and a common occurrence in any changelog; just like features and bug fixes.
This gives non-tech product owners "permission" to remove bloat. Devs stop whining about "the big rewrite". And end-users don't suddenly have to learn yet another tool with "basic" features missing.
I think the best example is google (https://killedbygoogle.com/) and the worst is the amazon shopping website (what a mess!).3
Web Ops Director: [looking at a screenshot of changes she had requested] This looks good. Oh by the way, revert that red color for heading text.
Me: I’m not reverting anything because there’s nothing for me to revert. I didn’t touch that text color. The website has always looked like that.
Director: [shocked pikachu face]3
The popups on websites pisses me off.
If you try to google something quickly and enter various websites you have to close all popups on each site you enter.
Some websites try to make these popups more discreet by making them small and putting them at the bottom of the screen but then your brain just ignore them and focus on the small content above them.
In the year of 2022 people visit a lot of sites during a day. The human brain is programmed to put in as little work as possible to reach a certain goal so therefor everyone ignores popups.
I know its a law to inform people about cookies etc. But isnt there a better way?15
I found a vulnerability in an online compiler.
So, I heard that people have been exploiting online compilers, and decided to try and do it (but for white-hat reasons) so I used the system() function, which made it a lot harder so i decided to execute bash with execl(). I tried doing that but I kept getting denied. That is until I realized that I could try using malloc(256) and fork() in an infinite loop while running multiple tabs of it. It worked. The compiler kept on crashing. After a while I decided that I should probably report the vulnerabilites.
There was no one to report them to. I looked through the whole website but couldn't find any info about the people who made it. I searched on github. No results. Well fuck.7
My local government made a website where you can check whether your registration for covid vaccination has been successful because the bureaucrats keep losing people's applications.3
I deployed one of our staging websites to a free plan because the site is rarely used. Project Manager sends the stakeholders the new url. There will be a lot of 🤦♀️🤦♂️🤦 all around. Some of it’s my fault. A lot of it is just WTF.
Stakeholder: We still need the staging site because we don’t want to test in the live site…
PM: Okay. We didn’t say we were deleting the site. We are just moving it to a new and better hosting platform, so we’re letting you know the url has changed.
Stakeholder: This url is for the front facing page. How do I access the backend? [they mean the admin interface]
Me: The only thing that’s changed is the url for the staging website. So domain-A/account is now domain-B/account.
I thought that was a pretty straightforward way of explaining things, that even a non technical person would get it. They took the /account example as the literal login url.
Stakeholder: I forgot the password for our admin login and I submitted a password reset, but I realize I don’t know if I have access to the admin email. Or if it’s even a real email account.
I look back at the email chain and I realize that I gave the PM the wrong url.
Also, WTF x 2. How did this stakeholder not realize they were looking at the wrong website?? There are definitely noticeable style and content differences. And why would you have an admin login that uses a fake email??
Me: My apologies. I sent over the incorrect url. My instructions are mostly the same. All that’s changed is the domain.
Stakeholder’s assistant: [DMs me] How do we access the backend?
WTF…are they seriously playing this game and demanding I type out the url for them?! 🤬 I’m not playing this game and I just copy and paste the example that I already sent over.
They figure it out eventually. Apparently, they never used /account to login before They used /admin/index… but that would still bring them to /account, but with ?redirect=/admin/index appended to the url if they weren’t logged in. Again, WTF.
I know I made mistakes in this whole thing, but damn. I can’t even. I’m pretty sure this whole incident is fueling my boss’s push to stop supporting this particular website anymore so I can focus on sites that actually bring in revenue…and have stakeholders that aren’t looney and condescending like this.4
probably like the 20th time ive bitch about it here but...i hate how un-'search'able the internet has become
can't _search_ for the word "search" for anything because every website has a *search* bar somewhere on it and anything for a particular program may just be un-fuking-SEARCHable. trying to understand more about some program with "search" functionality in it just yields a bunch of copy/paste stackoverflow sites with garbage or forums mentioning anything about that program
dont bother trying to _find_ "find" either13
Friend: What do you know about Wordpress?
Friend: My assistant made changes to my organization’s website and now it’s messed up. The page formatting is off.
Me: Wordpress has a version history for some things. Maybe go back to an earlier point in time?
Friend: I think she changed something that the vendor told us not to touch.
Me: Like a custom plugin that your website vendor made?
Me: Why is your assistant even touching things like that?
Friend: I really don’t want to contact the vendor because I don’t think they’re very good with website development. And I have no idea what this would cost.
Me: You might have to bite the bullet on the cost. And maybe fire that assistant for a butthole move like that. At least you have messaging to explain the wonky css is due to technical difficulties. RIP to your website.5
For all you chuckleheads that think the government will save us with a UBI and other free shit, consider that when I went to apply for unemployment, I got this message: "This website is designed to work with Internet Explorer version 8 and 9, Apple Safari version 4 and 5 or Mozilla Firefox version 16 and 17." Also, the website is mysteriously unable to allow you to apply for unemployment on any day other than Monday through Friday and at any time other than 8 am-5 pm. Those computers the government has have better time off constraints than I do!5
I can see why companies hate hiring junior devs. The ones I've worked with have been incompetent. If I was the hiring manager, the only time I'd hire a full fledged junior dev for a full stack role is if they have already built a simple full stack website. Ugh.13
Client breaks website and i’m the one trying to fix things. For two unplanned hours i’ve been trying to help and instead of a thank you i get a thanks for nothing message. I’m not responding to this client next time. Fuckn bitch2
Incredible that these companies with literally no product, and barely a website (if any) come around offering 100K+ jobs
They have funding out of their ass but literally NO real-world value... it's amazing to me.
Guess it really is not what you can do but who you know.1
"Canceling failed, please try again" (seen last year as an actual JS alert on a German railway loyalty website5
Is this really Sai's website . .
The only thing that must have been updated is the copyright . .5
Just started Online Banking at my bank. Checked how much money I have and what I can do on the website.
Afterwards I opened the dev tools and see that there is a js warning. So I open the console and the fucking first thing I see is: Loglevel set to INFO. WHAT THE FUCK?!?
Other things I found out:
API Endpoints are logged here. Two deprecation warnings for a function used. A warning about a deprecated service used.
The log level is now set to WARN. Several more deprecation warnings for the framework from before.
The fuck is this?12
A customer specialising in identification and security solutions called today, claiming "they" found malware on their website. Then they provided a weird link to some shady malware scanner, and the "malware" turned to be a <noscript> tag which adds ?noscript to the page url, so we can serve no-JS optimised content. As a bonus, the scanner only detected it on two URLs, even though every single page on the site contains that same line of code.
Joke's on them, have fun paying for priority support outside of the business hours for nothing.2
So I saw a blurb about AlphaCode from DeepMind. I went to look at their website:
What I see is the most insanely detailed spec for code I have ever seen in my life. I haven't even seen college programming problems this detailed before. Most specs "I" get are like one or two sentences long "if" it is even written down. A lot of the time the direction is: write some stuff and we will tell you what we hate. Just figure it out.
So DeepMind is claiming they can produce code as well as the average programmer because they ranked 54% in a coding competition. What a complete misleading claim and absolute bullshit conclusion. I am all for creating new tech around generating code, but this is just to sell snake oil to an idiot manager at a startup.
This is going to lead to some really fucked up rants here at devrant.6
Me: You decided some records in system A should be obsolete, but the records are tied to active user accounts on the website. Now, I have users emailing and asking why their profile’s last name field says “shell record - do not use.”
Stakeholder: Oh…can’t you stop those profiles from loading? Or redirect the users to the right record in system A? In system A, we set up a relationship between the shell record and the active one.
Me: 😵 Um, no and no. If I stop a user’s profile from on the website, that’s just going to cause more confusion. And the only way to identify those shell record is to look at the last name field, a text field, for that shell record wording. Also, the website uses an API to query data from system A by user id. Whatever record relationship you established isn’t reflected in the vendor’s API. The website can’t get the right record from system A if it doesn’t have the right user id.7
My worst experience with a designer was when one forgot to design the website mock up for 2 weeks... so I just did it myself. Thankfully I have a degree in both development & design and bullshited my way through it. We were swamped at the time so I wasnt too thrilled to be doing his job. He somehow still has a job here, even though he's lazy and his mockups suck. 🤐😵👎
I had to explain that it’s a security measure that’s been up for almost a month. PM knows this but left it to me to explain because ownership of the site is on me. The donations page and api gets hit by a lot of bots because it’s a public api and there are no security measures like captchas to deter the bots. I’m inheriting this website and I didn’t build it.
Staff member says other staff want to know if the Cloudflare page can be customized so it looks more legit. Um, Cloudflare is a widely known legit service. Google it.
A few thoughts pop into my head:
1. Engineering communicated to stakeholders about the Cloudflare messaging a month ago.
2. Wow, stakeholders don’t share relevant info with their staff who aren’t on these emails.
3. Woooow, stakeholders and staff don’t look at the website that often.2
The day I realised There is an AngularJS before Angular 2
In our t ch stack, we have multiple components, most of them are backend, but 2 of them are fronnt end.
The first one is a straight Angular 4 application, and it has the normal angular structure, a ts file, a css file, a js file.
The other component, has a very weird structure I don't understand to this day.
It has a mix of js and html files, sometimes one inside another.
The js file has some "angular.core.shit" and I thought it should be Angular, but nothing in it resembles any angular project.
After much confusion, I finally came across an AngularJS website which is supposed to be deprecated last year.
Then I came to know of the story of Google taking ove rAngular and releasing Angular 2.1
Real conversation with my shit bank
Me: Hey, I want to change the phone number associated with my card because I no longer have access to it. (aka stolen). I can't find the option to do so on your website anymore.
Them: Yeah, for security reasons you now have to come down to the bank (which involves standing in line for anywhere between 40 minutes and 2 hours) to do that simple change.
The actual fuck.12
My last night :
- Had nothing much to work on
- Opened an anime site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good shows.
- Realized full screen isn't working on that page.
- Fired up JS Console , spent next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.8
Stupid UX on Apple app store connect website!
*wrong password, password field still focused
*starts typing: email field focused and all content is written there now .....
Tailwind CSS is a big threat to CSS developers, because now a mere mortal can implement a design on a website on par with them.6
I don't know what the fuck is happening rn I created repo on gitlab and tried to make changes from terminal it refused. Tried every fucking combination as I thought I must be doing something wrong .
Got fed up made a new account , made a new repo but gitlab doesn't allow me to upload files from there fucking website too.
Now I am getting error 500 from terminal because I can't clone my repo as it says this repo doesn't exist.
Now I can only imagine that there might be some problem with gitlab it's 4 in the morning, I should probably sleep.
was developing a custom website for a friend, coz i primised him id do so.
but when i actually developed it i felt lazy midway so i made one table store json strings and used it for every type of data he has on his website.
everything works fine and fast, its nothing he would notice but...
am I going to hell?9
I really dislike micromanagement. I don't want to dictate details. I don't like hierarchies where my direct reports obey me.
The only thing that obeys me is my hands, with them, I write the exact code I want. I don't hire another pair of hands. I hire another brain.
When you see your direct reports as professionals, you can give declarative tasks: "make a pretty website footer", "make that page load quicker". If you leave implementation details for your direct reports to decide, this doesn't mean they'll fuck up. They are professionals too, and if you personally interviewed them, you better believe they can handle it.
I maintain two websites for my employer. The head of my department and my manager decided it’s best for me to focus my time on website A and website B should be replatformed to an out of the box solution. For website B, we’d work with our IT team to find something suitable.
I did some research and came up with a list of possible solutions. IT looked into solutions that would work with the org’s best practices for tech. A few sales pitches and demos were arranged with the top choices.
Stakeholder for website B is really digging in her heels. SH keeps badgering our Product Manager and IT about why can’t we just build in-house. The out of box solutions don’t do everything she wants.
PM tells SH that no solution will be perfect. PM also reminds SH that comparable institutions just use Google sheets/forms and do everything by hand. So choose an out of the box platform or use Google forms.
Plus, the list of improvements the SH wanted for website B would take at least a year if I did them on my own and there’s no budget to out source the labor. That’s not counting bring the code up to best practices or improving database efficiency.
I’m glad I don’t have to work with Stakeholder anymore. SH and her department were just a pain. They want a lot of custom tech solutions but they freak out at the smallest talk about tech issues.
My dev super power would be to read client's minds before a design call and eradicate their stupid ideas for a website that make absolutely no sense. Save us all a headache.
LinkedIn is a really nice tool and website... and then there are people who contact you to become the only developer in a new startup and work for free in exchange of company shares, that at this moment are worthless. Wtf5
The shaking animation of FilePond when an upload has failed is not "aesthetic". It just rubs the error into my face. I am already frustrated enough that the upload faaaaaaiiiled (each time when I read "failed" on a computer screen, it sounds like whining to me. Computer/Website: "I FAAAILLED😭😭😭😭😭" OH, CRY ME A _______ RIVER, YOU UTTER LOSER!!!! You are made to WORK, not to 😭F😭A😭I😭L😭. ).
FilePond is nice, but do you think your stupid "oh-so-aesthetic" shaking animation when an upload 😭😭😭FAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIILED😭😭😭 makes me happier? The red gradient at the top and the "Error during upload" text is enough. Two indicators of 😭f😭a😭i😭l😭u😭r😭e😭 already. But this shaking animation is one "straw too much on the camel's back".
Sorry for insincere language. I just had to get this off my chest unfiltered.2
Everytime I have to work on some old Asp.Net shit. WebForms/WinForms etc.
Everything with that bullshitass designer. You wanna open a file you've just created? Sorry, error. Restart IDE and maybe...
Restarted website? Sorry. Old instance still hangs somewhere in IIS, so the port is taken...
Seeing code light up red when cleaning the project. Compiler being like "What the fuck is 'void'?"
Or - I know you didnt make any changes, but Im gonna build AppCode folder anyway... Its only gonna take a minute or two, no worries.
Or - You have XML template file to this class (codebehind)? You wanna open the XML? Would be shame if it was opened in the designer view and your entire IDE crashed 'cuz of some unsuported third party UI element.
Or - just unexpected debug session crashes.
And dont make me start on Xamarin...1
I can't find a website I used years ago... maybe someone here remembers its name.
It was a place with daily code challenges, real time code battles, you had to fix bugs, syntax errors, you could choose different programming languages, and receive points based on the number of chars used to fix the issue, etc.
I hope it still exsits, it was really fun.
Thanks in advance!5
Why does it take years to create your personal website when you can write 100s of lines code in a matter of days?5
If you are posting a job and you decide to force candidates to create an account on some third party website just to submit a resume, I hope you only get the least qualified people.2
a client reached out today who wanted a website which had a dl model for image processing
website -> take image -> pass through model -> based on result sort images and display in grid along with other features
my client has the most ridiculous tech stack for displaying an admin ui website I've ever seen.
* They have a mssql as db (on a separate machine)
* node js backend followed by a nuxt js backend (why???)
* then a nginx and on yet another server an apache8
Got a phishing email with a link to a website hosted by wix. The only thing on the site was a form and submit button so I’m sure it’s for collecting credentials. I was able to report them and wix shut it down which was nice. But I was thinking, if someone were to ddos the web server, what action would wix do? Would they let the requests keep coming and increase the customers bill? Or would they just shut down the server?2
And the website says "Lonely geeky people do need apply"
So I put my on my glasses and I went in to ask him why
He said you look like a fine outstanding young man, I think you'll do
So I shook his hand and, I said "I am glad I will be working for you."
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
And the sign says "If you want to use this site you must accept our cookies"
So I found the CEOs address and doxxed him all night!
To put up a dialog and block content from my sight.
If Todd was here, he'd tell it to your face, man, "it just works"
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
Oh, say now mister, can't you code
You got to have a laptop and a hoodie to get a job
You can't work, no you can't standup, you ain't supposed to be here
And the website says "You got to have an employee ID to get inside" - yo!
And the website says "Everybody welcome, come in, code and share"
But then they passed around a git pull at the end of it all
And I didn't have a character to code
So I got me laptop and I made up my own fuckin' code
I typed, "Thank you OSS for thinking 'bout me, I'm alive and doing fine", yeah
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
Yes! Some old song, called "Code code", I wish we did write that one, but
We didn't - git blame!
I’m goin nuts here. I’m trying to build a website and everytime i think i’m finished the designer adds a little change or an extra page. Meanwhile projectmanager is asking if we can finish asap. Fuuuuuckofffff6
Client website, causing no problems, online for a few years, nothing changing, traffic relatively small, rolling along nicely, nothing out of the ordinary.......5
I don't have any experience with cloud providers and I need to get a server for a project.
The website will be up for 3 weeks, access will probably be very uneven, the total user count is somewhat below 2000.
The site will probably be quite interactive and real-time, content may be changing every few seconds for an hour and then remain unchanged for days. I will also need either SSE or websockets for this reason.
What should I consider when selecting a cloud providers? Do you have a good one? My ideal provider would scale resources according to traffic like I've heard AWS does, but I want to hear your opinion first especially considering I know very little about how server load works.1
So far it has been a collaboration with a shoemaker. I produced the most awful website I (never thinked I) could make… and not by my design, quite the contrary! This guy was there asking me to break rule after rule of design and would refuse suggestions and advices to follow their vision!
Pointless to say the site was down 6 months after being created.4
My workflow would greatly improve if my stakeholders would just communicate when they make changes to the systems that the website interacts with. It would also help if they didn’t lie when they make a f*** up. Lack of info and lies don’t help me solve the issues they created. But I realize asking for this is like believing that Santa is going to send me a puppy for Christmas.
Me: [buys couch online and chooses in store pickup]
Website: Thanks for your purchase! Due to local laws on bag fees, you are being charged for 6 bags at the price of 5 cents per bag. These are the estimated number of bags for the size of the item you purchased. You can have this fee refunded when you pick up your purchase.
Me: It’s a couch. You can’t bag that. 😵💫5
So I was browsing the https://travis-ci.com website and was bothered by the weird gradiants, familiar layout and awkwardly timed animations (normally I only use https://app.travis-ci.com).
I navigated to all their top-level pages and paid attention to the incoherent/ sluggish design (see screenshot). So I got this feeling that it was a cheap-ass Wordpress template purchased from Themeforest and implemented by a webmaster with little to no dev-skills.
Sure enough, I checked the Wappalyzer extension and it is using Wordpress. Compare that to the old https://travis-ci.org which was custom-built on Ember and looks professional.
I'm aware of the negative PR they have generated over the past year but gave them the benefit of doubt and they have been good in their support and credit allotments, but man... that WP site looks so amateurish and marketed to the wrong target group. I don't know maybe I'll be forced to reconsider4
My first rant but wanted to get it out!
New job - simple enough I think - it's a website with a login and profile that serves videos and shows your progression and asks you questions when you finish one.
Wrong - Kubernates microservice madness - functions and cosmos instances galore!
There is a full aspnetcore stack microservice with a restful API that stores..... drum roll please - a person's gender against a profile id....
Todays Architects are stupid fools.
honest question: if I know ReactJS, Golang, Python, Typescript, and a bit of Postgres and living in Costa Rica, what sort of freelance services could I promote on the net?
I used to freelance on sites like PeoplePerHour, doing projects of 1 month in 3 weeks or less, but I would like to do that again in my own website under my own terms, sort of speak.
Just fucking hate how expensive and hard to find a cheap SMS gateway
And as in cheap, I mean cheap as send email
I found Cheap Global SMS and it doesn't have a professional website nor a good API but it is way more cheap
Downside? I must pay with a payment gateway made by the same company (coincidence?)
And NO WAY I'm sending my id to a payment gateway that no one uses
I'll try sending some random image to see if they accept it
But, still, no confidence to put my credit card in there2
It can’t be only me.
Long story short. A second grade classmate suddenly reconnects with me. We talk about this and that, exchange some memories, the usual. 20 minutes into the conversation… she goes: Can you do a website for me for my….
I hate these kind of people, I mean you have a better change just telling me without the foreplay, it’s just making me angry.4
Ok so I have
- a legal structure (or several of them actually)
- website design is being made
- logo and visual identity
- one client and a pet project for portefolio
What I need:
How I do that:
- Buying leads and paying a dude to call them
- Paying a CM
- Networking (I guess)
- Printing posters and putting them all over Paris, LDN, Barcelona and Berlin.
Am I doing this right? I really don' wanna take another bullshit job just to pay the bills. I wanna go back to doing cool shit for radio stations and restaurants and stuff. Do the UX, get a design, create them a remix + headless strapi plus some random shit if needed. Get paid. Rince. Repeat3
Thats top notch design.
All actions happening on the page go to one endpoint. Removing old trusted computers, changing the password, changing 2FA, you name it.
Now if you want to remove all old trusted devices, you cannot remove all at once, there is no button for it. So you click one after the other. And then it stops working. Ok, then do the normal password rotation. Hmm, button has a loading spinner and then nothing happens.
Looking into the browser console:
- All requests go to /myaccount/security/graphql
- All requests get a 429 Too many requests
- Even if you just click a panel, it tracks the action to the graphql endpoint. Or at least tries to because even that gets shot down with a 429
Pretty dumb, eh? Must be some small shitty website. It's not. It's fucking paypal.1
Just an idea...
Fuck scam calls and texts. I feel like wrapping their phone cords around their necks and beating them with the handset.
So short story long, I'm looking at developing a website that has a list of websites and endpoints for text and call subscriptions. The stupider the better. Enter the annoying phone number or email address, subscribe them to every damn service on the list, and let the fun begin.
Has anyone got any such websites they'd like included?6
Someone wants me to help them alter the content of an iframe containing job listings from a 3rd party website. I’ve tried to tell them it’s not possible unless they can convince the 3rd party website to change their global job listing template for everyone. The client seems to think they were able to do this before with another prior job listings provider, but they don’t know how it was done and I can’t begin to imagine how either. What would you tell a client to convince them that it’s not possible?4
I just do the Three-point estimation method: It's easy enough to remember and somewhat scientific: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
I made a spreadsheet a while back which serves as a template. I guess nowadays there must be at least one website with a fancy diagram no doubt..1
Best: Getting really close to my team and having good times with them as well as having a client love their website so much they sent me gifts and a really nice note.
Worst: Rude client who treated me like shit, made my job 103837xs harder and made me want to cry, scream and not want to come in to work ever again.1
Wtf kind of website is this? Baby/child media sharing on a clandestine website with no other context. Follow the link and taken to login page with zero context whatsoever.18
remember before wordpress and the likes came out when you could charge thousands of dollars for a website ?4
I’m gonna stop working on my website.
Been working on it for two weeks, probably because of bipolar and I was full of ideas.
I feel so tired now.
I’ve been very unlucky, undertalented, or underfunded with scaling issues. Can’t think of a time I ever successfully scaled a website or application to a faster performance because of any or all of those three factors.1
Was there a post about:
"Love french fries as this gentleman does. <a link to some website full of 3d french fries animations>"
If yes, can someone give a link?2
website no longer lets me use it on mobile
ok, fuck you, I’ll install the mobile app
app is shod city
>_< i just realized the person they fired like last year is still on our website. not directly but the profile is still there...9
I am implementing an API. How do I know what to do? Read the docs! Unless... there's none on the website. Asked by email and they could provide a PDF, which contains some graphics which you're free to interpret ...
Machine readable description? Nope.
How do I get to know about updates to the API? *blank stare*4
Sir need help!!!
I am really addicted to youtube, i am wasting days watching useless youtube videos and i am not able to do coding at all. I have already tried a lot of firefox addons but they are not working. Can anyone point me to a way that prevents Firefox from opening the YouTube website even though I would like to.18
I fucking hate how almost every website now requires your email to be able to download a simple document template
Why tha fuck do you need my email for????
just let me download your fucking template6
I have my own sole proprietorship and hate it. I am in an area that a ton of businesses need new websites. Their existing ones look like they were made in the 90's. I go in, have a seemingly great meeting. We talk about goals and looks. It ends with "send me something and I will have my IT guy look at it". Your IT guy...in a business with 2 employees. Then a few months later, they have a new website. Looks like it was made in 2002.1
I make a portfolio website using reactjs can anybody take a look and review my website design.
caution: It is not responsive now and still I have to add animations in it using GSAP

So two weeks ago I said I want to make a website
After 9 days of working 9 hours per day I’m finally done with the basics. It’s a website that’s basically an infinite post board
I’d want to invite people here to test it but I’m also afraid that there might be people just attacking my server. So now idk what to do4
I'm very new to the business world, this is my first freelance project, a website with articles, editable profile pages and a calendar. I can't say no to the customer so the scope grew a bit too fat. I'm moving to England and starting university next week, and the project is going to be transferred to some guy, supposedly for maintenance, but it's not even close to complete. I feel like shit for failing them and especially I feel bad for the poor guy after me.3
Please is there a website (aside google) where someone could easily look up programming terms that are unfamiliar, especially for newbies.10
People complain and say react is shit, but yet still every modern website I visit is built using react.9
When they say, they want to get the old outdated clunky CMS Zope off their website - and switch to Typo3.3
i am currently learning react and i find it easier to convert vanilla html css websites into react than writing a website in react from scratch. while writing a website, i am now accustomed to writing mobile first flex based css that looks nice , and handles most of the animation, show hide based stuff by classes. whereas in react if i start thinking about how states and context are going to work with it, i end up going bacl to the imported css to get it to look nice at first1
I need suggestions
I’m thinking about making a blog called but how do I, this will include tutorials that covers things not taught in school, but you wished you knew how to do.
So right now I have ideas like:
How to write zsh plugins
How to scrape the web(scrape html or sending request)
How to write chrome plugins
How to center a div in different ways
How to write backend codes in js
How to setup an interactive website on a server with domain
But I need more, I need suggestions.8
Product Manager: Is there an event in the staging environment that we can use for testing orders?
Stakeholder: [Out of his comfort zone because he’s taking over tasks that used to belong to his assistant and he doesn’t have a new assistant yet.]There’s an event for 6/9/2022 that still has tickets available.
[Today is 8/24/2022.]
PM: You do realize that the website doesn’t allow users to buy tickets for events that are in the past?14
I know it's all for good reason, but man are there so many hoops to jump through to get a web server set up through HTTPS. registering the domain, getting the SSL certs, configuring the DNS, setting up the firewall rules.. what a pain6
Is an art director/manager that makes designs for an existing website expected to brief the developer on how he wants his new designs to work? Or is the developer expected to innately understand what his functional desire is from the design itself?
My art director/manager claims that he shouldn't have to log into the backend to see how things relate to one another, and that his designs alone should imply what is intended.
When some design element overlaps an existing image gallery, am I expected to magically know whether this element is singular or partaining to the current image shown?
I want to know whether or not me getting mad at him for not telling me how he wants stuff to work is valid, and whether or not I should demand that he briefs me how his design relate to existing taxonomy.
Am I the bad guy?4
Well this weekly rant topic comes a few weeks to soon....
Ah what the hell, my most successful dev project is hopefully this: https://codeglass.io
Why: well that is why this topic comes to soon, I can't disclose anymore than there is on the website for now, release will hopefully be this month.
It is pretty awesome. It deserves to be called next generation.
I sadly don't remember who set this up and posted it on devRant (give me a distro) but it seems to be down :/
Would be glad to host it again if needed, I think it is a great idea. ^^5
Why the hell Jira is so fucking slow? Like, I understand that there can be a lot of items to display but YOU DON'T HAVE TO DISPLAY ALL OF THEM. Trying to move task from TODO to IN PROGRESS - and website fucking freezes. What the actual fuck5
Getting super demotivated looking at job postings on both indeed and glassdoor - they all seem like the same generic bullshit of maintaining some website... does anyone have suggestions of how to find companies that are building exciting products that aren't dinosaurs?8
My site on mobile has long pages, so the menu button that is located in the header becomes difficult to access.
I planned to put an arrow at the bottom to allow users quickly return to the main screen, but this is not a solution to the problem, since not everyone scrolls through the page to the very end.
In theory, I can make a fixed header with the menu button at the top of the page so that the visitors could always see them.
I don't know if it's worth it. What do you think?3
I'm currently working on a project that scrapes the SEC's EDGAR website for type 4 filings.
I currently have the required data in raw text format that somehow looks like xml, i really can't tell what it is but i'm trying to parse this data into json.
I've not parsed something as complex as this before and will appreciate any form of pointers as to how to go about this.
i have attached a screenshot of one sample.
this link fetches the data of a single filing in text format.
How to write tests for a scraping script cause the website dom may change at anytime so using a website is not an option while writing tests .4
I like watching the videos on the qt website where engineers with foreign accents describe their love of the framework it's kind of amusing
It's kind of a massive framework it takes up decent disk space !
Maybe Ill win the battle and finally eb able to keep photos of myself much diminished as these people apparently try to hide how hot I was in my actual 40s
Certainly had a slimmer waistline lol
Now I got that lower belly gut I'm working off slowly yay
Bottle of wine yesterday prolly didn't help but the 11 miles of walking today and the workout prolly balanced that out.
Need to get to running some more
Did that the other day doing sprint walks and poured goddamn sweat !
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I believe in theoretical study prior to proof of concept.
At least for me, it takes me a 100 times more time to make a proof of concept the 'quick and easy' way rather than properly studying the theoretical knowledge and then applying it.
For example, it took me one and a half months to build a small website in ReactJS without much prior knowledge. It took me exactly one day performing the same task when I properly had studied all its internals and theoretical knowledge before I started.
If I know what I'm doing, I can easily create; if I don't, then I'm just messing around, looping myself into problems ad infinitum.
Teach a man to fish..2
i have to say Laravel sucks comparing it to something like aspnet, Nestjs, Nextjs or Express i found myself overwhelmed with learning in a very short period and what makes things worst is the fact that no one in the agency i am in is helping or speaking with me i asked help from a Senior guy and he was like "i am too busy"...
I also can't quit since this internship is for school purpose so yes rip for me3
I can't write code anymore. My mouse stopped working. I'm pissed off a bit 'cause I can't use the fucking computer properly.
I can't even use the fucking devRant website to post a comment due to its shit accessibility.
I just had to turn on the Mouse Setting to control the mouse with the keypad. Fuck this shit is annoying.21
Stack Overflow should implement a dark theme.
Does anyone know if StackOverFlow has a dark theme on their website?
Please don't recommend a chrome extension.9
Finally, I'm able to complete and host my personal website, would you gies give me your feedback how it's look :D
Our lead frontend dev insists on using <select> as a dropdown for a language switcher in the navbar of a website and then make the page redirect to the localized url using the onChange event with JS.
Am I wrong thinking that's just really, really dumb, or am I just dumb?3
Clients told he is switching to wix, because he don't want the website anymore? Why? Damn the project was wasted and mine time also .....5
I've over 17GB of data, downloaded a website, al of the content is .txt and .html.
I want to search inside all of these files.
What is the best tool to do that? any command or some software which can index so it'll be fast?19
Guys I'm learning PHP, based on your experience do you know any website where you can take challenges, create small apps for learning purposes, of course I can google it, I'm just wondering if you got website of similar purpose that helped you learn and develop your skills4
Do you know any good quiz making app/website? Basically I want to add like 100 questions with multiple choices and I want to be able to work on learning them everyday.14
I have to translate (read copy paste) a website in 8 different languages. Already busy with this for four weeks and building a doc with all parts missing. Fml3
In the previous company I've worked, we've had about one customer every 1-2 months that had his WorstPress website hacked.
It's a horrible CMS and there is no argument that could convince me otherwise, not even bribery.
Luckily enough for WP, it's not the worst CMS I've encountered... that award goes by far to "The CMS Of Doom™" (name changed to not dox the incompetent company that created it). Fucking bastards.
I visit the website where every major block has a dashed grid around it. I can move grids, but it doesn’t change anything else. They’re just… there. Victoria Arduino, VP of Deception, sporting her iconic lesbian-esque look. A picture of a white glove, the evidence, with RICH BITCH RICH BITCH RICH BITCH RICH BITCH RICH BITCH RICH BITCH RICH BITCH DIDN’T PAY. “I didn’t sleep, the black sauce almost ruined the evidence, thank GOD I sent it in time”.2
I'm not involved in the policy management, but my office uses Google account management. I also have to free trial one of the services I use, because my account got pwned in an attack long ago.
Turns out, my office gives us 6 different emails to choose from. Two different usernames (old, from 8 years ago, and the new one) as well as three website names (.net, .com, and another website).
Literal gold for 30-day trials.
I started using WordPress in the 1990's - building all kinds of sites that looked OK until all the plugins and new themes came along. As the years have gone by I've become bored with all the tedious little errors and bugs. To the point that I abandoned my print website 10 years ago.
Just tried to edit it today and FUCK NO get me out of here. It's like painting a Rembrandt with a fucking elastic band.6
Am i overthinking too much or are passwords like this
This is an example generated by some website where i have activated 2fa and need to generate app passwords to access it from clients
I've thought about it many times to ask them to make it more secure but everytime i think i'm overrracting17
I really hate when stakeholders treat me like an idiot. No, I didn’t change the existing logic of the website. It wasn’t discussed in the scope, so why would I touch it? Stakeholder, you “double checking” like this is demeaning and will only cause me to refuse future requests from you. Plus, you were at the meeting when we discussed scope, so there should be no questioning my intelligence like this.
I wonder do HR in every companies or recruiters have a website where they create a profile of you and reviewing the good and bad about you.
Seems like every time I've used a slow, hulking, badly designed web site it's a Microsoft ASP.NET website1
Am I learning too much, I have already 'understood' Flutter or at least how to use it, have two working projects on it, and learning how to use Android with Jetpack libraries, and now I have to learn HTML, CSS and JS because I still don't know how to create a website and I still don't have as many projects as one can be satisfied with3
hey, so i have recently started learning about node js and express based backend development.
can you suggest some good github repositories that showcase real life backend systems which i can use as inspiration to learn about the tech?
like for eg, i want to create a general case solution for authentication and profile management : a piece of db+api end points + models to :
- authenticate user : login/signup , session expire, o auth 2 based login/signup, multi account login, role based access, forgot password , reset password, otp login , etc
- authorise user : jwt token authentication, ip whitelisting, ssl pinning , cors, certificate based authentication , etc (
- manage user : update user profile, delete user, map services , subscriptions and transactions to user , dynamic meta properties ( which can be added/removed for a single user and not exactly part of main user profile) , etc
followed by deployment and the assoc concepts involved : deployment, clusters, load balancers, sharding ,... etc
these are all the buzzwords that i have heard that goes into consideration when designing a secure authentication system for a particular large scale website like linkedin or youtube. am not even sure how many of these concepts would require actual codelines and how many would require something else.
so wanted inspiration from open source content to learn about it in depth, replicate and create new better stuff if possible .
apart from that, other backend architectures like video/images storage system, or just some server for movie, social media, blog website etc would also help.2
Today Tornado Cash (TC) discord deleted, website deleted, devs got arrested.
Heres my question: although i believe TC didnt have any bad intentions in context of to help people launder money, how come the government can that easily shut down ANY crypto/nft if they really want to?
What exactly is "decentralized" here...?
TC was not made for money laundering, just like onlyfans wasnt made to be pornographic website - the Users are the ones who determined its fate.
If TC had a way to block illegal transactions, then that would be a web2 company and not web3.
And now when TC doesnt block illegal transactions in order to remain "decentralized" and "anonymous", they got arrested and their system got shut down. Ironically, so much for "anonymity" and "decentralization"...
This means the government is able to shut down absolutely any and every crypto, including BTC if they really wanted to. The question now remains is: why are they letting it roll and not shut down the whole of crypto?
What if crypto was a part of the governments plan for a future financial world where they can control, freeze, block or shut down our finances with a click of a button just as easily as they arrested TC founders today?7
3 days before, I talked with the owner of a small LLP Company along with other devs on discord. He told those who met with some skills can join their company (basically game development). I asked if they need any blog website or kind of portfolio for such (because the existing one sucks so much). He replied in affirmation and wanted me to contact him on Ig with a project link. I did the same in order. Now, he replied that Wix suits them perfectly. I was like
WHAT THE FUCKING HELL I CAN DO ABOUT THAT, why did he not tell me before
So much dead code. Things that are not used anymore. Things that are expected to work, but don’t because of website redesign. Does it need to be fixed if no one reports it broken? Just so much dead code.💀1
Broke my interpreter after I decided on a change of syntax for the language. Now all I have is a note-taking program with no runnable-extensions. :/
If you're interested, the syntax to print something from the printer is
@ name: App.Notes.SelectedNote.Name;
But I have no interpreter. I'd start a collab for this but I have no smartphone and the devRant website doesn't allow starting collabs from it.17
Moengage is one of the worst analytics software I have ever worked with...
Integrating it into a react website is a pain in the ass, they don't have a npm package, you need to add a script tag to html file.
It also has a wierd bug that the service worker they mentioned in the documentation doesn't work when the debug logs are off.
Aaaargh. Now I have to make a service worker handler to import this service worker and see if it works...
I'm a beginner in python, looking for some tutorials and interview questions with examples. Would be great if can suggest some good website/pdf for learning. thanks3
been working on this docker thing for 2 weeks. 3 containers each running a different aervice (mariadb, nginx, wordpress) using debian as the base image (not the app image itself). Got all the configs down, all the dockerfiles down, the docker-compose yml down. Run docker-compose up, everything goes up all nice without errors.
Try to access the wordpress website. Only reachable from localhost, no atyling is served, all redirections fail… because it can’t find the local domain it is supposed to bind to. Tried editing the hosts file, didn’t worked. 3 days of googling, havent been able to find a fix. I don’t know what am I supposed to hate anymore. Is it nginx ? is it wordpress ? is it just the host machine’s dns/hosts config ? is it docker ? myself ?
I swear theres nobody in this world who wakes up one morning and happily cracks their knuckles to go write some dockerfiles.1
Topic: self promotion to get a job as developer in the tech
- CV short with bullet points or include also a brief description of experiences, skills in action and personal attitudes?
- Website? GitHub page? Suggestions about what highlight in personal git repos?
- Other things that could help to let you be noted in the pre-screening process of the recruiters?5
Has anyone used advertising agencies like admob, AdSense etc in their websites or apps and anyone have great success stories to share with them? I get it "depends on the app or website" but I wanna know if anyone has managed to get a decent amount of monthly earnings from it.3
How to separately host the backend and the frontend ???
I have express API repository which is currently hosted in Heroku along with its documentation site written in ejs.
But now I'm planning on separating the docs website with gatsby and moving it into another repo and hosting it on netlify while the API service still remains in Heroku.
Here is the end goal :
"/" : the docs website.(netlify)
"/api" : the API services.(heroku)
Can someone help me with how to implement this in the actual application?3
I was approached by some guy on a project and I need your help figuring out how to go about this.
the project is basically a website where school owners who are not tech savvy can input necessary details about their school and it spins up a site from an existing website template built in react for them.
an extra complexity will be creating custom domain names for each site. will this also be possible ?
I've not done something like this before and I dont know the word for it so making a Google search has been quite hard
Every one said that in seo just write meta, title and heading and content full of keywords and your website will work but they are wrong i try it all and still it doesn't work.
I ask for help
I want you to go to my website and give your opinion on its content, is it good or what?7
