!(short rant)
Look I understand online privacy is a concern and we should really be very much aware about what data we are giving to whom. But when does it turn from being aware to just being paranoid and a maniac about it.? I mean okay, I know facebook has access to your data including your whatsapp chat (presumably), google listens to your conversations and snoops on your mail and shit, amazon advertises that you must have their spy system (read alexa) install in your homes and numerous other cases. But in the end it really boils down to "everyone wants your data but who do you trust your data with?"
For me, facebook and the so-called social media sites are a strict no-no but I use whatsapp as my primary chating application. I like to use google for my searches because yaa it gives me more accurate search results as compared to ddg because it has my search history. I use gmail as my primary as well as work email because it is convinient and an adv here and there doesnt bother me. Their spam filters, the easy accessibility options, the storage they offer everything is much more convinient for me. I use linux for my work related stuff (obviously) but I play my games on windows. Alexa and such type of products are again a big no-no for me but I regularly shop from amazon and unless I am searching for some weird ass shit (which if you want to, do it in some incognito mode) I am fine with coming across some advs about things I searched for. Sometimes it reminds me of things I need to buy which I might have put off and later on forgot. I have an amazon prime account because prime video has some good shows in there. My primary web browser is chrome because I simply love its developer tools and I now have gotten used to it. So unless chrome is very much hogging on my ram, in which case I switch over to firefox for some of my tabs, I am okay with using chrome. I have a motorola phone with stock android which means all google apps pre-installed. I use hangouts, google keep, google map(cannot live without it now), heck even google photos, but I also deny certain accesses to apps which I find fishy like if you are a game, you should not have access to my gps. I live in India where we have aadhar cards(like the social securtiy number in the USA) where the government has our fingerprints and all our data because every damn thing now needs to be linked with your aadhar otherwise your service will be terminated. Like your mobile number, your investment policies, your income tax, heck even your marraige certificates need to be linked with your aadhar card. Here, I dont have any option but to give in because somehow "its in the interest of the nation". Not surprisingly, this thing recently came to light where you can get your hands on anyone's aadhar details including their fingerprints for just ₹50($1). Fuck that shit.
tl;dr
There are and should be always exceptions when it comes to privacy because when you give the other person your data, it sometimes makes your life much easier. On the other hand, people/services asking for your data with the sole purpose of infilterating into your private life and not providing any usefulness should just be boycotted. It all boils down to till what extent you wish to share your data(ranging from literally installing a spying device in your house to them knowing that I want to understand how spring security works) and how much do you trust the service with your data. Example being, I just shared most of my private data in this rant with a group of unknown people and I am okay with it, because I know I can trust dev rant with my posts(unlike facebook).29 -

Motorola.
Nice bang for buck with their mid-range phones, but the OS basically doesn't get updated and the support is shit.5 -
Honestly, fuck Lenovo.
First it's taken well over a year and my phone's not gotten 8.0 yet. And now my phone no longer vibrates. I've had this for less than a year and the piece of shit has broken already.
Last time I'm giving this trash excuse of a company my money.21 -
I have found a place for my first sticker and my phone goes everywhere so here's some free advertising lolz12

My new phone - the Motorola C Plus - has insane battery life.
Took it off charge Monday 07:30am with 100% battery.
It's now Thursday 11:00pm and it still has 10% battery.
You're looking at 90 hours Standby right there. Damm, Motorola.
I put it on Airplane mode when I sleep and have the screen brightness turned down, but still.
That's impressive.3 -
Being awoken at 4am cos Devrant uses the vibration feature and the Motorola nexus 6 vibration motor sounds like a pneumatic drill going off...
Please add a feature in app to turn off vibration. Devs need sleep as well as coffee10 -
Really hate that Motorola are quite happy producing shit iPhone X knockoffs but they can't create a moto 360 gen 3... Priorities guys!
(I wear the gen 2 and I think we can all agree it is fucking A grade) -
I guess Motorola decided to join the Slow Down Your Device So You'll Buy The Next Model club. I had a Moto G5s Plus I bought not too long ago. I mainly use it for debugging now.
I mean, can't prove anything, all I can say for certain is their last update, literally, the final one they plan on releasing for that model, made the device so slow it was useless.
So I unlocked it and put LineageOS on it. Not easy, since there's no official build for it. Once I got it working, all the issues with the stock firmware vanished. It runs faster than it ever has.
Now I get greeted with a message when it boots telling me that the device was unlocked and can't be trusted, because, you know, we can all trust cell phone manufacturers to not put a bunch of spyware on our phones.4 -
worst dev tech ever for me was intel x86 assembler. I developed on motorola 68k before and i loved it. x86 was horror.1

Back when every mobile company had a different charger it made sense to say Nokia charger or Sony Ericsson charger.
But ever since micro usb became standard, I cringe when I ask for a micro usb charger and idiots say they have a Samsung charger not a Motorola one.
Seriously? How much do you have to think to realize if a charger works for many brands of phones it can't be a Samsung charger?7 -
Motorola:
It was the only company which used to provide great budget android smartphone with stock android and regular updates. (ranting this on my Moto G3) But from moto G3, they fucked up with promised android OS upgrade (shitty Lenovo)
Microsoft (for fucking with windows 10):
Still remember that first stable build of windows 10 released in 2015. After the first update they never stopped fucking with user's computer with different bugs. Still I haven't seen any build as stable as first one.1 -
Is there any Android gods here?
I have a (what I think is) bricked Motorola Moto X Style (XT1572 EU) that I am not able to do anything with.33 -
Was talking to a friend of mine and he was very expressive about companies (Especially tech companies) just wanting money...
Turned to him and said that wasn't true because if it was Motorola would make a gen 3 of the Moto 360...
(This is sort of a mini rant for me because they are too busy copying the iphone design instead of giving the people what they want and will earn them a shit tonne of money)3 -
Just setup a new phone cause old one is flaking out. Spent two hours uninstalling bullshit. The default weather app had fucking tiktok video ads running in the app! Fuck you motorola! I uninstall this piece of shit weather app. Then this non shitty weather app appears. Fuck you motorola! That should have been the default. Turned off all the suggestions bullshit, uninstalled like 20 garbage pos apps, took 10 minutes to figure out how to shut off phone because new android os is fucking retarded. Fuck you google! Seriously you changed the fucking power button to pop up the stupid voice shit! Fuck you google!
The whole time I am waiting for the setting I can't change so I can return this shitty phone. Fuck you motorola!
I dunno, we will if this isn't complete shit.
STOP RUINING EVERY FUCKING THING! Fuck you shitty ass phone manufacturers!
At the end of the day, at least I ain't a retarded Apple user... I am just a retarded aNdRoId uSeR!
What did go smoothly? Transferring my old data wasn't complete shit. Its a 5G phone, but it still only seeing LTE. Fuck you T-Mobile!
I hope there was enough "fuck yous" in this post.6 -
I kept getting low storage notifications on my watch so I check and nothing was visible it just disappeared so I let's clear the Google play services data, about 20 minutes have past and I had to factory reset my watch and I'm now waiting for the syncing to fucking completed so I can look at the fucking time again5

I once asked my professor how to implement the twisting feature to open a camera (available in the motorola phones)...he laughed and said 'is it a feature or a bug' . ...and frankly speaking it made think

How to write programs on Android 10 that work with files/directories? Have used a number of JVM-based languages like Groovy, Clojure and Kotlin.
My last try was with Groovy. I ran it under Dcoder which has to be cloud-, based as it supports numerous languages. I gave it permission to access storage but got a file not found error from Java. Copied this excerpt for the file path.
import java.io.File
class Example {
static void main(String[] args) {
new File("/storage/emulated/0/read_file.grvy").eachLine {
line -> println "line : $line";
}
}
}
Do I need root? Do I need to change file permissions using Termux? Why can't I find a way to write simple software on a Motorola Super, 3 GB RAM and 8 cores? I hate using a phone for a computer but a seizure has me in a nursing home with only one usable hand.
Any help is greatly appreciated.5 -
Any tinker's here?
I'm in no way one, but I have to start with something, and recently I've buy a Moto Z2 Play, that has this little and nice interface that allows "Moto Mods", practically are modules that you "snap on/off" and add functionality to your phone.
Does anyone here have tried the MDK? do you think this is promising or just another trend to get lost in the way? -
I just installed a spiderman app on my smartphone...
Does anyone have recommendations on a new phone? I tend to go for Nokia 7 plus, my current phone is a Moto G5s plus, but I'm not satisfied with Motorola updating schedule anymore3
