I just got my first commit merged in LineageOS. Feels good. It only took 1 month to merge it in but well they have looooot of work.10
"We’re putting a bullet through Google’s head" - Cyanogen, 2015

I wanted an Android phone with latest Oreo version, atleast 4gb RAM, 32gb or more with good processor supporting 4G dual SIM with a resolution of 1440 pixels by 2560 pixels at US$ 100.
Well got for all of it for US$125.
I went to LineageOS site, exported and filtered all supported devices with my relevant device attributes.
Got LeEco LeMax 2 for US125$ on eBay. Installed latest LineageOS 15.1 with Android 8.1.0. got 25gb free space.
Using the phone for last 10 days, flawlessly.26
I've recently received another invitation to Google's Foobar challenges.
A while ago someone here on devRant (which I believe works at Google, and whose support I deeply appreciate) sent me a couple of links to it too. Unfortunately back then I didn't take the time to learn the programming languages (Python or Java) that Google requires for these challenges. This time I'm putting everything on Python, as it's the easiest language to learn when coming from Bash.
But at the end of the day.. I am a sysadmin, not a developer. I don't know a single thing about either of these languages. Yet I can't take these challenges as the sysadmin I am. Instead, I have to learn a new language which chances are I'll never need again outside of some HR dickhead's interview with lateral thinking questions and whiteboard programming, probably prohibited from using Google search like every sane programmer and/or sysadmin would for practical challenges that actually occur in real life.
I don't want to do that. Google is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I get that. Many people would probably even steal that foobar link from me if they could. But I don't think that for me it's the right thing to do. Google has made a serious difference by actually challenging developers with practical scenarios, and that's vastly superior to whatever a HR person at any other company could cobble together for an interview. But there's one thing that they don't seem to realize. A company like Google consists of more than just developers. Not only that, it probably consists - even within their developer circles - of more than just Python and Java developers. If any company would know about languages that are more optimized such as C, it would be Google that has to leverage this performance in order to be able to deliver their services.
I'll be frank here. Foobar has its own issues that I don't like. But if Google were a nice company, I'd go for it all the way nonetheless - after all, they are arguably the single biggest tech company in the world, and the tech industry itself is one of the biggest ones in the world nowadays. It's safe to say that there's likely no opportunity like working at Google. But I don't think it's the right thing. Even if I did know Python or Java... Even if I did. I don't like Google's business decisions.
I've recently flashed my OnePlus 6T with LineageOS. It's now completely Google-free, except for a stock Yalp account (that I'm too afraid to replace with my actual Google account because oh dear, third-party app stores, oh dear that could damage our business and has to be made highly illegal!1!). My contacts on that phone are are all gone. They're all stored on a Google server somewhere (except for some like @linuxxx' that I consciously stored on device storage and thus lost a while back), waiting for me to log back in and sync them back. I've never asked for this. If Google explicitly told me that they'd sync all my contacts to my Google account and offer feasible alternatives, I'd probably given more priority to building a CalDAV and CardDAV server of my own. Because I do have the skills and desire to maintain that myself. I don't want Google to do this for me.
Move fast and break things. I've even got a special Termux script on my home screen, aptly named Unfuck-Google-Play. Every other day I have to use it. Google Search. When I open it on my Nexus 6P, which was Google's foray into hardware and in which they failed quite spectacularly - I've even almost bent and killed it tonight, after cursing at that piece of shit every goddamn day - the Google app opens, I type some text into it.. and then it just jumps back to the beginning of whatever I was typing. A preloader of sorts. The app is a fucking web page parser, or heck probably even just an API parser. How does that in any way justify such shitty preloaders? How does that in any way justify such crappy performance on anything but the most recent flagships? I could go on about this all day... I used to run modern Linux on a 15 year old laptop, smoothly. So don't you Google tell me that a - probably trillion dollar - company can't do that shit right. When there's (commercialized) community projects like DuckDuckGo that do things a million times better than you do - yet they can't compete with you due to your shit being preloaded on every phone and tablet and impossible to remove without rooting - that you Google can't do that and a lot more. You've got fucking Google Assistant for fucks sake! Yet you can't make a decent search app - the goddamn thing that your company started with in the first place!?
I'm sorry. I'd love to work at Google and taste the diversity that this company has to offer. But there's *a lot* wrong with it at the business end too. That is something that - in that state - I don't think I want to contribute to, despite it being pretty much a lottery ticket that I've been fortunate enough to draw twice.
Maybe I should just start my own company.6

- Reunlock and reflash TWRP
- WRITE THIS AS A BREAK
So, I finally gave in and installed the unofficial LineageOS ROM for the Google Pixel on my phone. I got tired of waiting for the official ROM. It was quite an adventure. I have to say the most time-consuming part of the whole process was getting my bootloader unlocked (because my Pixel came from Verizon.) I did have a little adventure after the installation though. I opened the devRant app for the first time and was instantly blinded by the default light theme.
TL;DR I now have LineageOS running on my Google Pixel, and I'm quite happy about it.3
No bloddy fucking way !
I cant be believe it !
I ported LineageOS to device that newer saw LineageOS support so port from scratch basically.
So i did that. The build was done in 1 day with tiny amount of patches on top of what was in repos already. Basically patches only to build it.
I got the zip and all that jam but i put it away since i believed that it woudlnt boot as its first build ever of LineageOS for this device.
Today i had to factory reset my device since AOSP10 fucked up data partition so i thought that maybe i could flash lineage just to see where we stand.
I flash it.
I see sony screen.
Wait what ?
LineageOS boot anim shows up.
Does the pass 3 times and shows me the final image of boot animation basically telling me it booted up.
OK in my head i was like OK but the UI wont load. There is no way.
I look away at my friend we have been talking with while this happened.
I look at device and see the device fully booted to LineageOS intro screen.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK ? HOW? WHY? WHAT ?
(I totally wasnt screaming like a girl and dancing in the room when this happened. NOOO)
We were joking with the devs on different devices that it would be fun if the first build booted up since it required only 2 patches to build properly.
When i told them that the first ever build booted up they were going nuts as i was.
To be clear.
Porting usually takes hours of debugging to even get it to boot up.
Sureee not everything works as is expected. So whats broken ?
Camera, Bluetooth, NFC, Audio (Already building a fix), flashlight.
So there is fair bit of debugging still left but once audio is working then basic functions basically work and i can use the phone daily without trouble and as backup i have my old phone until rest is fixed.
This is the best day of the year i must say.8
Ouuuuuu i just had the best laugh in this month.
You know samsung have presented S8 as beast device (While its not) and finally it received 8.0.
Im like wtffffff its not even the newest android.
(I do not own this device and im happy for that.)
Funny thing i own a 2013 device and its running 8.1 android based on LineageOS 15.1 with latest security patch.
And looking at the amazing dev Github reveals that P dev preview is probably already running on it and once google releases full version of android P the device will receive it in DAYS.
Now that i tell is a fucking support.
NO OEM CAN BEAT CUSTOM ROM SUPPORT.38
Why I'm doing crazy shit all the time ?
Playing Metro, Skyrim, now AC Rogue on my Linux tablet.
Installing even Linux on damn baytrail tablet.
Installing MSdos onSSD (possible kinda)
Yeah I'm crazy geek as my friends say :)
Also who would fucking say that its possible to compile LineageOS onRpi zero ?
Well i didn't knew too but well tried it took so much time but well I have it running all day so oh why not.14
Me: *Trying to get the mobile banking app*
App: Nope, you have a rooted device
Me: *disables root access for apps and adb*
App: Nope, you have a rooted device
Me: *Maybe a xposed module would help*
Xposed: Nope, you have android nougat
Me: *Maybe there's some LineageOS marshmallow rom for my phone*
LineageOS: Nope, just android 7.1
OMFG i just built new build of Ressurection Remix and flashed it. The damn build didnt boot and i didnt have a fucking backup which i always have but not this time since i deleted it due to low storage issues.
Well i had to factory reset.
It booted well but The most IMPORTANT apps didnt work so i have tried the old build. Well it does boot but my new Gapps dont work on it somehow.
Im just so fucking ngry at myself for not making the damn backup.
I will have to build new build which will take few hours with downloading the sources.
And i do not have that much time.
Well i still have the possibility to install LineageOS which i know is stable but i like my RR more.
Well i will surely post another rant tomorrow with the resoult.
EDIT: I almost forgot FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK4
Haxk20 starts a LineageOS build without applying most of the patches he should just to build most of the shit and then add them to build the rest.
Build goes without issues to 60%.
Wooooh NO NO NO NO NO.
This is not how this is supposed to go.
You are supposed to fail at 40% then error out and make me stuck on that error for a week or so.
Short version: The port is going suprisingly well and im scared of how well it goes. Im not used to this kind of shit when stuff goes that easy. But i suppose i should thank SONY for device trees and most of the porting done. I just have to edit it a lot to make it compatible with LineageOS.
And BTW LineageOS 17 when you are done and i get working build of AOSP 10 then im coming for you. Be scared.3
Found some of my old phones, what should I do with 'em? Almost all of them run LineageOS already (i.e. all but the iPhone 6) with TWRP, so they are definitely available modification34
I did it again.
I got myself into ROM porting again.
But i must say i have learnt a fucking lot of shit from the last time i did it.
But really i wish SONY could make the device trees more uhm custom ROM friendly because sure it works on AOSP but dang the shit that has changed on LineageOS is crazy and i have to follow all that shit to make it build even. Totally utterly crazy.
But hey at least i have all the patches that are not in the repos. That they have made easy to follow. Boy if it builds fine and after fixing the shit it boots up on first try is going to be miracle and im going to scream so hard that i will go beyond human hearing range (20Khz) Dogs will congratulate me on that LUL.
Google is just a steaming pile of shit!!
I've recently installed LineageOS onto my phone and wanted to degooglify my life.
So my current Smartphone doesn't have any GApps installed and I get along fairly well.
Should I need anything, I should just be able to use it in my browser right?
Nono!! As soon as I want to log into a third party Service using Google (older acccounts with the other choice only being Facebook) I need to "verify my identity". And the only option are my old smartphone who still have Gapps on it but are slow and don't accessible when I'm away!
For those who say: "Google is just beeing secure. They don't want anyone to steal your account.". I USE 2FA AND HAVE BACKUP CODES.
BEFORE DEGOOGLING MY DEVICE IT NEVER ASKED SUCH A THING!!! WHAT A PILE OF SPYING SHIT!!!
And the best part, after I remotely started my PC at home and just want to take a screenshot of the message for this post before just using a working session, the message didn't appear.
Somehow google decided that me logging in 15 mins later (same ip) proves my identity?!?!?!
IF THIS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO AI. FUCK THIS SHIT. GOOGLED SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE AN ONLINE CASINO BECAUSE THE CHANCE OF JUST GETTING LOGGED SEEMS COMPLETELY RANDOM!!!
(I also had this prior when using my smartphone browser. There I couldn't "circumvent" this and I was at home. But having this shit on my browser which should've a session is unacceptable.)5
Building RR for my device from 2013 with excellent support still. (Xperia SP).
Damn I think I never saw easier build.
No errors on first try.
Just edited devote tree to work with RR and boom working ROM.
But that is only because of one of the best devs at XDA since he is supporting this device in LineageOS.6
I guess Motorola decided to join the Slow Down Your Device So You'll Buy The Next Model club. I had a Moto G5s Plus I bought not too long ago. I mainly use it for debugging now.
I mean, can't prove anything, all I can say for certain is their last update, literally, the final one they plan on releasing for that model, made the device so slow it was useless.
So I unlocked it and put LineageOS on it. Not easy, since there's no official build for it. Once I got it working, all the issues with the stock firmware vanished. It runs faster than it ever has.
Now I get greeted with a message when it boots telling me that the device was unlocked and can't be trusted, because, you know, we can all trust cell phone manufacturers to not put a bunch of spyware on our phones.4
I've found this tutorial on getting a google free android phone (tl;dr: lineageos, fdroid&yalp, etc.)
It probably isn't news for most of us in here, however a handy beginner friendly guide to give to friends and relatives.
The downside: it's in german.13
Smashed the screen on my beloved LineageOS Moto G4 last night.
(Alcohol may be partly to blame.)
Any suggestions for a cheap Android phone with a stable release of LineageOS?7
Why the fuck is it so hard to find a proper guide on porting a custom rom(LineageOS) to a device?!2
Just resurrected my old Galaxy Nexus with LineageOS. It's still shiny af even on Android Nougat.
Speaking about almost 6 years old device. 😍2
I just bought a new smartphone, cause i broke the one i had before, and i find it really good for only 140€. It has 4gb RAM and 1,5Ghz 4 cores processor, and an IP68 Shock/Dust/Water protection. The only problems that i have are that as the brand is not really popular (model is Phonemax Rocky 1), there are no recovery/roms or easy ways to root it. Maybe if i have time i'll try to port TWRP and LineageOS, but i'll have to do it myself... :(1
Just got into project with 2 sony developers on making "dirty" LineageOS port over sony AOSP.
Hmmmm did i just make it boys ?
As they would say in cyberpunk 2077.
We are going to the major leagues boys.
LineageOS build done. Have not tested it.
Audio sure as hell doesnt work because i havent patched it yet and is not even built. Other then that it "should" just boot up when i get to testing it.
And no i didnt spend 2 hours figuring out why it didnt make flashable zip for me to only find out i used "make -j8" instead of brunch command.
Fuck those moments.
If it wasnt for the zip it would have been a great day. That fucked it up really bad.6
I have lost now another device to planned obscolence (how is that still legal), my g3 officially took its last breath two days ago, first it was its battery dying (thousands of devices broke that way [exactly two years after buying it] and at that time there was no batteries to replace it with) - whoever was brave enough to hold onto his device for longer than the battery failure - he then faced the simcard reader breaking and that was my case now too.
I asked many colleagues for help and even found a guy that does repairs for the oldest phones (got too excited), but even he couldnt find the issue, besides a guess that its the main chip that partially died on purpose or it got somewhere desoldered by the always and poorly managed overheating issue, which would cost almost the same to replace as just getting a new phone in the end and even then, theres probably a third switch they planned, to give you the final bullet.
I got a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 now and really gotta say they have an amazing near vanilla android experience and their "two phone" isolated spaces are quite handy to seperate work and private notifications, apps and files.
It was even compatible with lineageOS and has a simple website to unlock the bootloader (a first for me, never saw any company making it that easy), but after trying their version of it, I don't even have to switch.
I will still miss the vibration motor of the g3, the feedback of it when typing is still to this day the best one I ever tried.8
So the last two weeks Ive been trying to flash lineageOS on my new OnePlus6. Ive done multiple phones with custom roms without issue, but the new A/B partitioning makes it a lot more impossible.
I followed LineageOS their official guide for the phone twice and also suggestions from both OP subreddit as LineageOS subreddit.
After every fail I end up with a black screen and a blue LED, both when booting the OS and when booting TWRP from fastboot. Then Im doing a factory reset through a windows only tool and start over.
Im getting pretty frustrated, to a level I am almost saying FUCK it I will use google, since my current phone only works while connected to a charger. Since I really hate google I hope any of you can give a suggestion of flashing my phone.13
Apparently my OP1 can also run Android 10 now...
And I upgraded my OP6 to LineageOS 17.1 a few weeks ago.
So the only reason I now have a Pixel 2 is because I need a non-rooted phone to access work emails...
Is there a way in LineageOS to reboot directly into twrp? I remember in the old times roms would include an "advanced restart menu", but I cant find that anywhere.
I am always sweating, if my phone is going to get wiped, whenever I have to access twrp via "wipe everything" boot menu, because I can never know if something deleted twrp and it will actually wipe my phone.6
Ohhh update on the LineageOS16. Everything works. So this weekend im doing full port of LineageOS17. Sure its a dirty port since im just basically taking SODP (Sony Open-Source Device Project) sources and using them in LineageOS sources so it has to work kind of but its still a port of custom ROM thats usable. And well since LineageOS17 is getting to the stage that more and more roms are getting out on XDA then well i will do the same.3
So I have flashed and rooted (superSU) lineageOS 14.1 thats running android 7.1.2 on my phone and now I read that this will trip safetynet and won't allow things like netflix, banking apps or pokemon go - I tried to install netflix and it worked, tried pokemon go and after granting GPS via privacy guard it worked too.
But still it seems that if I would now flash Xposed (which I didn't find a good build for 7.1.2 yet anyway) that it would actually then start tripping those protections and that I should go with "systemless root" via magisk.
How does magisk compare to superSU? I loved root some years ago because of xprivacy, adfree etc. which are actually modifying system files as far as I know and I would like to go as "extreme" as denying camera usage to apps, but not making them crash, so just like xprivacy has fake IMEI I would like to show just a black image served to the app, I remember there was an xposed module doing that, but how far can magisk compare there?
And most importantly is there a way to just hide superSU and xposed from all those detections?4
Just upgraded to OxygenOS 10..... and realized it don't have Live Captions.... which is the only reason I upgraded....
I should've just kept LineageOS....3
Sorry yesterday installing LineageOS because wanted to Android 10 and got tired of OxygenOS replacing recovery and root every time it updates...
The build failed and bricked my phone so installed Lineage Pie.... so same as before...
Then found out today there an app that will indeed OxygenOS 10 and for all future updates can auto install and keep root....
So now reinstalling OxygenOs...7
Hmm... OP6 is coming out...
I bought an OP1 3.5yrs ago for $350 and it still works pretty well with LineageOS...
So right now the amortized cost is $100/yr...
New one seems to be $500 but the only reason I want the new one is the camera...
The other options I can think of is Samsung or Google, are there any others... that can be bought in the US?9
It's time to say goodbye...
... to PacRom.
//PacRom is a custom rom which has tons of //unique features. Problem: It's supports only a //few devices, like my good old OnePlus One.)
But why do I want a change now?
1. I don't get any updates or security patches any more. Yes, it hadn't stopped me to change for a longe time, but I think now that my device has more holes than a cheese.
2. I have an old Android Version (5.1.1) so I have some problems with performance and compatibility in general and with some apps.
3. I want something new, a change.
Which Custom Rom will I use next?
I want to try Ubuntu Touch for a while and then I want to go to LineageOS, but I am open minded for other ideas or suggestions.4
I'm thinking of moving on from LineageOS. It's pretty good on my S3, but the battery life is laughable and there's some in built features missing I'd love to have.
Maybe make my own? I have trouble finding ROMs for my phone (that I like)7
Fastboot I LOVE U!!!!
Somehow entered into a boot loop after enabling a EdXposed module.
LineageOS recovery sucks, has no terminal so can't disable magisk modules... only can mount system, not data....
So dumped LineageOS's payload.bin and flashed the clean boot.img11
Has anyone ever figured out why the fuck Android reboots seemingly out of nowhere at random times?
Is it kernel panics? Is it some shitty bug that has been plaguing this cursed OS since its inception? [sidenote: boy that was a mouthful of 's'es]
Or are we already at the mercy of the Big Brother, and someone at the controls likes to play random pranks on us when they're bored?
Thinking of switching to LineageOS more and more, but I'm kinda worried about resetting my phone since I've never done full backups/restores and I have no experience in the matter...7
Is anyone running LineageOS on OnePlus 6? Apparently it's been out for awhile but seems it's still unofficial... And basically have to write the whole phone again... And there's something about needing to flash A/B partitions too with Stock OxygenOS?
But I'm already running OOS?
I have an OPO and been looking to upgrade to Nougat for awhile. Think it's supposed to have a lot of improvements including better battery stats and control?
Was looking at LineageOS but it's still on nightlies... Are there any other ROMs that are stable?
And is N worth an upgrade or should I just wait for O? I'm on CM13 atm.13
I've got a question about Google Maps and Contacts that's driving me up the wall.
I'm trying to add a business with address, phone number, website etc. to contacts from Google Maps.
There is an option that looks like it should do it, but when I select it, it just tries making a new contact that I have to manually type out?
I'm wondering if you guys have come across something that would allow me to do this without having to copy/paste every damn detail.
If it helps, I'm on LineageOS 14.1 with Open Gapps...
I have set up a VM on Azure as a small build server - nothing fancy yet, just being able to manually build LineageOS. I only spin it up when I need it, so when I do, I can assign quite a beefy machine and that's all fine. But: It needs a lot of hard drive space and the additional data disk needs to be paid 24/7, whether the VM is up or not. As such, it is eating up my (free MSDN) credits. I am not too well versed with Azure yet, so maybe there is a better way.
Does anybody know a cheap way to get a large-ish SSD on Azure? Maybe with ephemeral OS disks, potentially running on another (small) VM in the same network and sharing it?
Any advice on how to get started with porting an old Cyanogenmod ROM 13.1 for an unsupported device to upstream LineageOS?
I'd love to go through the process porting LineageOS to a device even though I know that no one should use an HTC One V in this day and age.18
Apparently Android Pay released for Canadians some time ago, because it's on the front page of the google play store. I really want to use it cause remembering to carry a card around is tough work, but I'm failing the safetynet check.
My only choice, it seems is to revert to a system where I don't have root. I was thinking of installing lineageos, but I'd be giving up some pretty serious things that I've gotten into with Resurrection Remix.
The fling navbar would be gone, I'd probably be able to deal with that but I just find it a way nicer experience than the traditional android navbar.
I might not be able to use Google Assistant, not sure if Lineage has it
And (worst of all), if I revert to a system without root, I won't be able to use my system-wide dark mode from substratum (I'd also be losing battery optimizing features from greenify, which is just another downside)
Existing Android Pay users, is this worth it?10
