The next big trend will be in the area of project management:
The Waterfall™
Agile has been abused to the point where The Waterfall™ is way more agile! Think about it: It's straight down. No loops, no unnecessary hourly, daily, weekly meetings. No micromanaging. Just one flow. It starts at the top and it's all downhill from there.
Pure efficiency!
Edit: Wake up developers! The management doesn't want you to know this simple efficiency trick!9 -
Idiots. Idiots everywhere. The next big trend in software engineering is to take a whole bunch of idiots, give them the basic knowledge to write code, and then dedicate a whole lot of competent developers' time to either fixing errors made by those idiots, or attempting to make "safer" tools so those idiots don't screw up as easily.6

Markdown. It is now used by MDN Web Docs and supported by Google Docs. End users will slowly pick up. Then even more (proprietary) flavors of markdown and their accompanying JS-frameworks will follow. All with good intentions, but it can only to end in a big mess and confusion like USB or USB 3.2 Gen 1.5

As we currently see a lot of codeless software platform, in the next 10 years there is gonna be high demand for people to extend these shitty apps into something proper, just like it happened with wordpress. There is a key missunderstanding that writing code and developing an application are the same thing; they are not.
Once you can write code you sure ass aren't a developer, thats a grueling journey until then, and being able to create an application without code exaggerates the problem even further.2 -
probably gonna have to do with environmental software certification (optimizing for energy reduction, that sort of stuff)15

Seems to me that shitty youtube shorts "explaining" basic programming concepts via shitty JavaScript snippets.
Yesterday I've seen dude basically badly explain/demonstrate currying, on such a contrived example that it didn't explain WHY would you ever want to use it, and apparently without being aware that's what it's called, and using like 5 nested/chained ternaries.7 -
I feel like the pendulum on js frameworks may be trending towards simplicity. I see lots of devs complaining about complicated frameworks. Maybe it will trend to less js loaded solutions and maybe a return to simpler pages.
I dunno, one can hope right?
I don't do web development, but I see a lot of people that do and they all sounds like chain smokers and alcoholics. Something has to give.5 -
Engineers realize paying it forward is just as important to career progression than glamorous features completed1

Not having to constantly engineer software. Honestly, this long-promised disruption is like nuclear fusion. Always 10-50 years away.

So if the current trend in software engineering is over-engineering, then the next can only be under-or appropriate engineering? =/
Definitely hoping it will be less proprietary, less custom DSL´s and grassroots driven2
