Its hard to move forward, when everything is hung up on the past... Keep the mess of the past, or change for a better future... I don't care2

Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
We had a bit of a slow year in terms of devRant updates, but we gained some momentum towards the end of the year and we're looking forward to carrying it into 2020. Recently, we launched what I think are our coolest new avatar items yet (https://devrant.com/rants/2322869/...) and behind the scenes we got our iOS/Android apps on the latest version of the frameworks we use, which will help us continue to improve stability. Still, we definitely would have liked to do more, but we're optimistic the coming year will bring great things for devRant.
One thing we are very proud of is this year we had our best year ever in terms of platform stability and uptime. Despite the platform growing and our userbase growing, we had almost no complete app downtime even though our infrastructure is minimal. A large part of this is thanks to devRant++ supporters, who allow us to maintain a small but effective tier of infrastructure and redundancy.
In the coming year, we're going to launch one of our most ambitious initiatives yet, and we're also going to continue to improve the devRant experience itself. We want to try to gather more user feedback, so we'll be working on a way to do that too. Stay tuned, more on this stuff coming soon.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community! And thank you to our awesome devRant++ supporters for continuing to be the main drivers to keeping devRant up and running.
Looking forward to 2020,
- David and Tim28 -

Not a rant, but I found this funny enough to share.
About two weeks ago, I’m contacted by a third party development firm that is responsible for building the next iteration of a control board were are developing. Alongside build of the PCB they were scoped to flash the firmware and verify all connected components.
During the call, they tell me they don’t have the resources to build our testing environment with the Ansible script I provided, and they don’t know if the updates they have made will work with our control system. Ugh...really...
I attempt to walk them through the 3 pretty simple commands to launch the playbook. Instead of listening, their project manager insists that I need to load up the environment and send them a ready to go system.
I quickly load up a RaspberryPi and prepare it for shipping. I hand the box to our shipping clerk and fill out the shipping request documentation. Then about a week goes by and this is where the story really begins.
I get an email from the same rep asking where the environment is, and I head down to the warehouse to inquire where the RaspberryPi might be. After speaking with the head clerk, we can’t seem to track down the package. I’m assured that they will find the Pi and send me the shipment update.
I pass the information along and after about a day and a half I still didn’t receive word back from the warehouse team. I load up another Pi and head back down to the warehouse. I follow up with the warehouse staff. They inform me that they have not been able to locate my package and another warehouse worker is called over. He says he hasn’t seen it, but they they were having a food day that day and he thinks more than likely someone ate it.
Like it didn’t even click at first but after a few seconds I realize that these guys have literally been looking for a pie for the past two days...and I JUST DIE.
After the 5 or so minutes of laughing I show them the newly flashed RaspberryPi, and of course they know exactly where the original one was.
It’s shipped out now, but wow. Also, it turns out the PCB manufacturing company didn’t even really need this and it was all a guise to hide that they are behind schedule and that they will not be able to finish the work scoped. FML!6 -
True compliments I have given:
-*actual tears dripping* I'm changing how I code to be setup more like yours

So, I’m a software engineer at one of the FANG companies, and a “friend” from college that I haven’t talked to in years suddenly messages me, asking for my work email. I’m like, why would you ever need that? And he replies, “I’m gonna send you an email with a link, can you open it from your work computer? I’ll pay you for doing that, and it’s totally legal.”
Yeah... how about fuck no.
He blocked me after I refused.11 -
Without you, the world falls silent. It feels cold and desloate, and there's nothing to fill the void. You've been my faithful companion for many thousands of hours. Your passing pains my heart.
Rest in peace, my friend.5 -
This is not an ad!
But if anyone is in a need for a decent java profiler - here's yourkit's festive deal: https://www.yourkit.com/purchase/ (Personal)
You can legally use this licence for both personal and commercial needs. It's non-expiring. You can have up to 3 profiler copies simultaneously (deactivate one to activate another if all 3 slots are used)
I just thought some of you might find this useful. Since I'm a performance engineer I grabbed this deal as if it was the last one in the shelf :) The tool is good, the price is decent and it's for lifetime.
Again, it's not an ad. I don't care if you purchase it or not. I just thought I've come across smth nice and felt like sharing.2 -
Why is it always the setup that takes time, and not the actual programming, when doing projects...7

Assisted Suicide/Right to Death
Living in the modern world, people face many difficulties in their day to day encounters. Some are pushed to the point of being depressed, stressed out and having other mental illnesses developed. Unfortunately, it has become a common thing that some people cannot cope with the encountered difficulties any longer, and they wish to die. Death seems the best way out for most of the affected people, but how to undergo a voluntary death is always a significant issue for many individuals. Many people decide to commit suicide; however, this practice is always painful with a prolonged time of suffering until death. Due to the suffering of self-suicide, people opt for a better alternative that will end their life in the most effective way and with less suffering and pain.
The alternative they opt for in such a case is assisted suicide. In the assisted suicide, persons of sound mind, either ill or not ill, approach other persons (physicians, in most cases) requesting advice or a prescription of drugs, which can lead to subsequent death. On request, a physician prescribes the most effective set of drugs or advises other chemicals that the latter can consume to terminate their lives with minimal pain and with ease. It should be noted that physicians do not get involved in the physical administration of the prescribed set of drugs; they only give the best prescription to the best of their knowledge. On the contrary, a person administers the drugs to him/herself. This practice is challenged legally and is always surrounded by controversies and arguments. This paper will determine how and why the assisted suicide is a problem; it will also look at the possible outcome if nothing is done to prevent suicide. Additionally, it will propose the best solutions to the issue of assisted suicide and will make an attempt to justify it.
How And Why Is Assisted Suicide a Problem?
Assisted suicide is way different from euthanasia or mercy killing. In euthanasia, the physician uses a legal prescription to end the life of a person with a terminal disease (Friedman 6). Euthanasia is also administered if it is the only possible way to end the suffering of a person. However, assisted suicide is different; the affected person may be healthy, have many responsibilities and be full of energy. From the legal perspective, taking their life is only acceptable if they do it to themselves without any physical assistance.
Only because the physicians are not involved in the process of administering the prescription that leads to death, this issue raises numerous controversies. A study of the cases of 440 individuals who had visited doctors and had death wish prescriptions indicates that it is an extremely dangerous practice. According to the study, out of the 440 persons, only 40% had a successful death within the prescribed time and with less suffering while 30% of the individuals died with complications. Some of them had to suffer for more than a week before they died. The reason for the prolonged suffering and painful experience was due to mistakes made by the individuals when taking the prescribed drugs. Some did not take the full dosage while others did not even buy the correct prescriptions as advised. Such incidents prove that the practice of assisted suicide has turned to be a problem.

holy fuck, I just browsed instagram and guess what? there's a lot of ho's and retarded morons! what in the actual fuck? I am honestly surprised!
I was so mad about it that I went for a walk in town and stumbled upon a KKK gathering. Jesus christ, can you believe these people are racists?
I had to storm out there of there to my favorite extremist church and I just found out that they are homophobes. I am shocked!
then it started to rain, and I was wondering what would happen if I walked into the open. Can you believe I got drenched? I was not aware that water had this effect on regular clothing.7 -
Interviewer: Do you know about SQL injection?
Student: Yessss
Interviewer: Okay, how we can prevent it?
Student: Yes, we should prevent it as prevention is always better than cure. It can lead to data loss and other problems so it can be difficult to fix it if it happens. The best case is that nothing like that takes place. [...]
Interviewer: I get it but how?
Student: By not building any web applications.
[Silence]
Interviewer: Nice, you may go. Do not call us. We will call you.19
