I've never had a great experience working with designers, but this one might be the laziest! Props if it's for a friend and unpaid though.15

I got a lot of stuff done though

My guide to know if your startup is failing:
My Qualifications: Every startup I've joined has failed. Not necessarily because of me.
For the sake of me typing faster, x=startup.
1) X doesn't have a product, but just an idea that x keeps pitching as the next "big thing". (What's with this shit anyway?)
2)X keeps changing products, One day your designing IoT sex toys and the next day your building a self aware AI. For some reason, the people at X saw Silicon Valley or that meme about how Instagram was created and thought "Fuck that happens to every moron who can switch on a computer."
3) Even worse, X keeps changing industries.
4) X keeps lying to you, your marginal user base and seems overall unethical. (You should leave at this point.)
5) X wants to target some obscure and very specific market and keeps pitching the company along the following lines
<famous_company> for <random_market>
Eg: "Yo bro it's like Amazon but for necrophiles."
6)X keeps saying that X is the next big thing. (X is not and I can't emphasize this point enough.)
What you should realize is this is my general observation and some or all of these points may not apply to every situation.
Sorry for typos and any other stuff.11 -
👋🏻 So, yesterday I thought I'd quit...

I think "Velop" should be a word.
Velop - to break software

This would give the word "developer" a new meaning.

Rant Init...
That moment you write some magnificent code and everyone is sleeping so you can't share it with anyone but you feel like the room should turn into an exciting musical where you win an award. (Best code can ONLY be written between the hours of 12am and 6am)
The next day, you try to explain to your significant other (user) how amazing this new genius way of doing that "thing" was, in hopes of sharing your excitement but all you get is a "you're such a dork" instead.
You may even try to share it with a coworker or fellow programmer but somehow they just don't see how exciting it is for you.

Dev Badass Rant
There are two occasions really:
1) For our C++ project in the third semester, we had to build any kind of C++ application. Guys in team of 4-5 built record keeping systems and calculators and one even made a Tic-Tack-Toe app. My friend and I, just the two of us, made a simple program that plays Rock Paper Scissors with you. With the power od OpenCV, it used the camera to track your hand movement, predicts your next move using contours, and displays the winning move as the computer's move.
For example, if you play Rock, the computer would predict that you were gonna play rock and display paper as it's move. It wasn't perfect, but it was ours, right from scratch. When it worked at the presentation, I was swell with pride. 😂
2) I was interested in game dev so I started Unity. The first tutorial in Unity you find is the web series by Unity about rolling a ball. You simply make a platform and control the ball with your keyboard and the camera follows your ball. You also make pick ups and get points based on that. So I started there, finished the tutorial, added a few walls, made edible and non edible pick ups, dimmed the entire scene, adjusted the camera angles, transferred controls to mobile gyroscope and added a few other things and voila! MazeBall was born. It has only one level and I thought it was pretty shit.
I decided to show it to a friend and when I showed it to my mate (the one who I worked with in the C++ project), my other classmates saw it and were impressed. Like so impressed a couple of them transferred it to their phone and took home with them. 😂 Was inspired to improve.4 -
Overheard 2 colleagues having an interesting telephonic meeting late night at my room.
Dev 1: Wait. I am trying to fix it.
Dev 2: Ok. Take your time
Dev 1: Shit. I found it. I knew I was doing something wrong here.
Dev 2: Oh. Nice. What was the bug?
Dev 1: It was a super silly mistake. Don't want to tell. Folks will laugh at me.
Dev 2: Don't worry. It happens with everyone. Come tomorrow at office, and whisper it in my ears. Noone will know.8 -

Fuck, I just lost a node module name.
A few days ago I had an idea for a node module, checked npm to see if the name was taken and it was not. Today I was going to publish it and found out someone registered it 2 days ago.
Now I'll have to think of another name or publish it under my username...9 -
Thought Amazon servers went bonkers seeing these names. Later realized these are episode names for TV series, Mr Robot.

Got this email from my manager today... a bit of a downer to my three day weekend!
I actually don't talk about work (in an indentifiable way), and I think most of the other points in their guide are utter BS (and unenforceable).

When 3/4 of my team gave up and left halfway through. I still don't understand how we ended up with a working prototype in the end.
-
I worked for months staying up till 3am almost every night in order to collaborate with a team on another time zone. No one ever praised me or thanked me or gave me a pat.
Yesterday two members of that team stayed up till 2am once for the first time in their lives to make a release. They got immediately labelled as the most dedicated employees.
Okay, sounds fair.7 -
To become a programmer, you must at least once
1) sacrifice your weekend
2) sacrifice your sleep on the weekend
3) have an experience with non stop coding at least 3 days, working at home is an exception
this rule applies when you get a job working as a wageslave, rushing on a tight deadline
its almost 2 am here, and im at the office pushing and fixing bug codes for beta launch for tomorrow. this is all because of this one outsourcing company my boss hired that does the backend api keeps on changing and delaying stuff.
i guess im just fine with this, knowing that i have fulfilled all 3 rules before.6 -
Hey I got reminded of a funny story.
A friend of mine and me were in internships in the same company. The company was specialized in territory resources management (managing water for agriculture, money to build industrial zones...). He got the interesting internship (water predictory modeling) and I got... The repairs of a reference sheet manager that never happened to work. It was in C# and ASP.NET and I was in second year of CS. I expected the code to be nice and clear since it was made by a just graduated engineer with +5years of studies.
I was very wrong.
This guy may never have touched a web server in his life, used static variables to keep sessions instead of... well... sessions, did code everything in the pages event handlers (even LinQ stuff et al) and I was told to make it maintainable, efficient and functional in 2 months. There were files with +32k LoC.
After 1week of immense despair, I decided I will refactor all the code. Make nice classes, mapping layer, something close to a MVC... So I lost time and got scoled for not being able to make all the modifications as fast as in a cleanly designed code...
After 4 weeks, everything was refactored and I got to wait for the design sheets to change some crystal report views.
At this moment I began to understand were was the problem in this company.
My friend next door got asked to stop his modeling stuff for an emergency project. He had to make an XML converter for our clients to be able to send decentralized electrics bills, and if it was not completed within a week, they would no longer be able to pay until it is done.
This XML converter was a project scheduled 5 years before that. Nobody wanted to do it.
At the same time, I was waiting for the Com Department to give me the design views.
I never saw the design views. Spent one month implementing a golden ratio calculator with arbitrary precision because they ain't give me anything to do until the design were implemented.
Ended with a poor grade because "the work wasn't finished".2 -

Isn't it just nice to throw away hours of work because you were given wrong requirements?
I worked late last night to finish a project with an incoming deadline, and for what? That's right, for fucking nothing. Hours wasted. Just because I was told the form was to be submitted to an endpoint that I would receive later on.
Turns out that what I actually need to do is embed some form from a third-party service. So the form that I already implemented (with styles and logic) isn't needed. What's worst, I have to redo all the styles to match this embed form.
Thank you so much for that. 🖕Never again will I work late. I should have known better by now... -

When I wasn’t the lead yet there are so many things I want to do and improve. I have asked and judged my lead’s choices a thousand times for choosing the easy and fast way instead of the right way.
Now that he left and his role was given to me, I can now sense the same judgements from my members to the decisions I make (or not make).

CSS, I fucking hate you.
I fucking hate my job, because of you. I'm pulling my hair out every day, all day because I have to put up with your bullshit. If it weren't for you, I'd probably enjoy design.
You're not even programming. You're the mistake that happened when web-design developed too rapidly for the devs at the time to keep up and produce intuitive, functional tools. That, or they were just fucking sadists.
You're a band-aid that's started to rot, but we just keep sticking pretty stickers over you and pretending like the wound isn't festering.
I wish I could spend more time learning C and C++. Then I could go get a real job as far away from you as is virtually possible.

Random story, I was working on a project a few years ago that had a very tight deadline and a lot of code to write. I had been working late in the office most evenings but one night myself and a colleague had stayed later than usual as we got carried away with supporting peripherals in the epos.
The cleaner came in on evenings and we had seen her that night, but had not heard anything for a while so when it came time to leave we figured we best lockup the 2 offices.
After making a quick pass through the building we couldn't see her so proceeded to lock up. Fortunately before setting the alarm we spotted her motorbike in the adjacent car park and decided to have another look.
I'm not quite sure why I decided to look in the tiny supply room/closet but fortunately I did as I found the cleaner standing in this tiny roomplaying games on her phone 😂2 -

Would be interested in your guys experiences if any of you have done it, but I feel I'd be affected a lot as I only work 3-4 days a week.
I literally stood up and left the meeting, saying I'd quit if they did it. I'm far more comfortable and productive with my setup and space. Knowing my co-workers they might think I'm saying it for drama but I think I actually would leave, despite everything else being fine (except HR!).16 -

There was this project where a bunch a scripts had been running for three weeks analysing a bunch of fileshares. The project was in overrun and the analysis wasn't anywhere near done.
I was given complete isolation and a team of people who were instructed to do anything I needed. I had them replicate the data to as many machines as possible and I started scripting the analysis with some sample data. After half a day of collecting laptops, desktops and severs I transfered my scripts to those machines and ran the analysis in 5 hours.
I felt like I saved the project. -

Are you willing to share details of your salary, or for contractors your daily/hourly rate? If you're not, that's interesting to know too.
Interesting to know;
- Currency (hopefully obviously)
- Location of work (or if remote, primary location of employer?)
- Contract type (FT/PT employee, contractor/freelancer)
- Job title (or general activity for contractors)
- Number of years in role/contracting
- Whether or not you would or have shared your salary with a co-worker (perhaps you're willing to share here but not with a co-worker)
- Gender
The 'Why is it soooo taboo to ask co-workers salary?' question made me think about this (https://devrant.com/rants/1557306/...)10 -

Do you ever feel there's like no real point to life, like you could die tomorrow, you wouldn't really care?
I feel life is ok, I've got it a lot better then others in my situation at least financially. But in terms of relationships probably not and I don't have much interest in developing any.
And looking at the future, I just don't see it going anywhere or getting any better? I could be easily replaced, forgotten, not doing anything meaningful.... And the only other people that would notice and remember are my parents.
I enjoy doing things but in the long run they make no difference. I can have short term goals like maybe for the next few weeks, months but if someone asks where do I what to be a year from now, what do I want to accomplish, there answer is "I don't know and I don't care"...
And I guess that's the point, each day sorta just feels like whatever...13 -
Joined small scale-up months ago. I literally want to punch one of my coworker. Constant mental harassement, self-declared lead, rude and impolite. That coworker is socially awkward in the baddest and meanest way.

Not even mentioning that culture of oppression and repression.

Today I decided to turn an RFC5545 RRULE implementation I had made a few months back for a project in Rust into a cargo package, it would have made a fine addition to my portfolio since I was positive some people would find it useful. Turns out someone else had the same idea as me around the same time I did, but already published a package with it and, worst of all, the dude seems to have made it better than I ever could.
Welp, guess I'll just throw my code away, use his package in my project and maybe contribute a bit to it if I find any issues.

I should start collecting some bucks,
And buy some ducks,
The devDucks,
To accompany me through the mist of the unknown console logs,
Playing treasure hunt,
Performing stunt,
And find out the hidden treasure behind this mist2 -
NDAs for me are a good predictor for a bad client or client relationship.
Doesn't work so well for larger cos, and it's not unusual for them to require one anyway.
I charge a fairly high flat fee for signing one. The people who won't pay probably don't need the NDA anyway and were going to be problematic.3 -
so now that ai and all that machine learning can differentiate between images n stuff, what could be the new captcha‽ 🤔5
-
Anyone just have like a weekend where they stay up really late doing nerdy things or work on their personal projects? I sometimes find myself on certain weekends that I just work on a bunch of personal code, websites, or even if it is changing my accounts around.5

How many of you get late to your office/college/school bcoz of working late night on your side project.
I missed my 1st lecture today as well...4 -
I know I ranted about this before but...
FHEGYOQOBGMLAEBFOEBFKHIOQMBEVCOFARQIJSABUEVEUANGIWN
Dumbass me thought "I know it's fucked up in the past but give it another chance". My google home decided to delete all of my alarms. It will not be getting another chance.
I woke up 3 hours later than expected on a normally smooth day and now I going to be late to class and I'm anything but calm.
I'm about ready to frisbee this shit out my window. -
This is what happens when it's late at night and you've been staring at something for too long... someone had to point out to me that I actually added the wrong permission :/1
-
"Who ever said money can't solve your problems?
Must not have had enough money to problem to solve them."
Bitter truth for many. -
2am: I can just go to bed at 4am and get 4 hours of sleep and be fine
4am: Eh, I'll just sleep at 6am and take a nap before work.
6am: Who the fuck needs sleep? That's why I bought coffee -
It just struck me that by long-pressing backspace on the virtual keyboard I can use emoji.
I feel kind of stupid right now. 😶2 -
As I'm seriously considering sending the guy I went on a date with recently who subsequently pissed me off the Telugu character, iOS 11.2.6 is released. 😞2

To people with problems waking up:
I highly recommend the app Alarmy!
It's a real pain in the ass.
When you set an alarm you can set it up to in order to make it stop ringing you need to take a photo of a specific place in your home (like the toilet lol, or a painting, or whatever object far from your bed), or you'll have to solve a math problem.
(I don't have any kind of affiliation with this app, but it works!)6 -
I plan on going to office on time... I generally reach after 10:30, timing mentioned on my offer letter was 9:00.
So, waking up has never been an issue.
But I wake up, lay on my bed doing nothing... Sit on my bed doing nothing... Does everything in ultra slow motion...
And regardless of how I early I wake up I'm always late. Ugh.2 -
As a developer, the longest I've worked in a row was 15 hours, from 8am to 11pm. We had to migrate/onboard a project and after we thought everything is done, the client told us about some extra functionality which was "urgent" and he couldn't tell us the months we prepared the migration -.- But it wasn't that hard and our boss was really nice. He stayed with us, even he couldn't really help us, bought us some Pizza, paid for taxis back home and we could stay home or come late to work the next day. And fortunately, that doesn't occur regularly in my company.3
-
My last week of 2017 sucks! The function that been assigned to me has been 7 months until i doing it without any priority tasks. The bad for this, is becoming worse for the clients and they really want it until the end of 2017, so happy new year motherfuckers.
Here's the story, the function i am doing requires a heavy calculations, and i am no brainer in math, though my logical skills, hopes me up to made it quickly as possible. However i am full of workloads/to-do for the past 3 months, that i am unable to comply my documents regarding my employment!!
Much worse for this is the coding guidelines. There no fucking guidelines at all, like do what i want just to make it work, but my team lead ironically speaking that never touch that because it's already working. Dude, the server response was the real issue there and i was supposed to handle that function because your fucking json was not formatted well! Shout out to git for giving me a saving grace not to fire me.
Lastly, the leader's attitude. You're so sarcastic as fuck! Of course i won't get mad at you on personal matters, i understand. But on work, the way you communicate was not like my any mentor/prof that i ever met!! I hate my fucking work. Hope my 2018 would do my best, AND I AM GONNA MAKE MY OWN GUIDELINES ACCORDING TO YOUR ASSES!! HAPPY NEW YEAR, GODDAMNIT!! -
When debugging, why oh why do I forget that multiple browser consoles can be open and then get frustrated when refreshing the tab doesn't show my changes?!
-
Well after 3 days of fighting with C I finally got my assignment done ✅ :D the assignment was simple and would have taken me like 5h max to do in Java( which is my first and most proficient language).
However I was away from class for a while and subsequently had to code the project while teaching myself about C and pointers .🤖
This is why we don’t skip school kids 😄
P.S It surprised me how many other people were in the schools lab at 2AM to push the assignment to the local git 😮9 -
CodingRoom room = new CodingRoom();
room.lights = true;

const obj = {
a:5,
b:25
}
const {...Object.keys(obj)} = obj;
console.log(a);
It would have been cool if that worked 😅4 -
<?php

Today I've seen 2 bsod on 2 different ticket machines at my local train station.
I'm late as hell, probably not arriving in time for the exam, but at least I laughed. -
When you are working late, is there a role on your team who grabs you dinner / does other odd jobs?
We used to have a producer job role, but those employees had their title changed to program manager at one point, and since the switch there really isnt a role whos obligations include grabbing dinner for the team on late nights and doing other odd jobs / tasks. How does your org handle this? Are you "entitled" to dinner if you stay late, or do you figure that out on your own?
Quick disclaimer: I kind of feel spoiled / ridiculous for expecting someone to grab me dinner, but if i'm working 12+ hours and I have to leave to get dinner, i might aswell just go home as my concentration is going to be broken and im sure the business would rather my butt in its seat coding.5 -
Me always: never installing MacOS updates because something always breaks
Mac always: Updates available! Install now??
Me today: *installs MacOS updates*
Mac today: *refuses to boot*6 -
Pondering on what to call the act of copulation here on DevRant.
Feel free to add your suggestions!
My suggestion is "child class instantiation". One could on rare occasions call it "client server"...
I know, really childish of me, but I'm bored...4 -
Couple of questions? What's to late to stay up coding or what's to early to start coding in the day?
I'm personally always mindful of my health.7 -
Fuck. Less than six hours before I'm in work. Time for bed! Let's see what that bitch Hannah from HR has to say when I'm back! I've stepped up my social media game🤣2
-
Is your train really late if you already know that it's late and then adjust accordingly to reach on time for a train that is late?5
-
What did you guys do for your final year projects in college? If you did cs that is. And how well did you do?3
-
Working from home, the office is pretty unbearable in this heat.
Anyone else feel like conference calls in your underwear is a top work from home perk!5 -
I have no idea how but its taken me years of wanting to make apps to discover phonegap?! My days of fumbling around in the bloated piece of trash that is android studio and never getting anything done are no more! WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS7
-
I just finished refactoring the code of a single jupyter notebook into a decent structure with comments. It feels good.
Unfortunately I still have stuff to implement and it's 2:50am :(5 -
You ever wake up and realize it's 10 am and you wanted to be in the office at 8 and for a moment you question your entire career and every single life choice you made?9

When I was little, my father told me about this thing he did when he was younger, he could tell a computer what to do, programming, and he promised me one day he'll teach me how to do it myself, but that day never came. A few years later, at age 10, I went to a "technology" summer camp, where one topic was programming in Processing, and I was really excited to do it, so excited and interested, that the place where I did I'd accepted me in their Coderdojo without having to wait the list (kinda cheating). There I learned Processing for three years, and how to use GitHub, until last year I decided to become a "teacher" myself (the topics we dealt with were really basic, and there were only beginners).
Other things I did is showing the people of my class how to program in TI-BASIC with our schools calculators, because, as they say, teaching is the best way to learn.
This course we started informatics at school, but the teacher isn't really an expert, and the few things he knows (apart from php4) I teached him.
I'm now constantly learning new things by Googling them and setting high goals for myself. -
When you wake up late, then have an event you're going to this evening. Means I get less than 3 hrs to code.
-
Me at 9 pm working on a project: this will only take a couple minutes...
Me a few minutes later: fuck, it's three in the morning...
And that's why I have sleep issues. -
Coursemates tried to convince me that putty was the programming language we were learning in our Intro to Programming class, not C. I thought they were joking, turns out they were dead serious.1
-
It's quite probably the same for everyone, but especially considering I've had nothing close to formal training in anything that I've learnt or do programming wise I've noticed it a lot.
For me the worst part about being a dev is finally starting to feel happy any comfortable with my skills and progress, only for something to come out of nowhere and make me feel like I know diddly squat. -
Just finished the night job at 5am. Looking forward to a good rest tomorrow! Not looking forward to correcting my sleeping pattern for Monday 😭1
-
I love to build (full stack) 2 whole complex websites simultaneously after 4 months of lacking work and waiting for project plans. And both with deadlines in 2 weeks.
Just why can't our PMs do their job and make usable timings? -
Inhuman deadlines imposed by non-programmers... don't know what feels worst: the shame of my own present code, or the fear of my own future bugs.
-
Me 3 weeks ago: I need the changes to make so I can add them to the code.
Hours before the change is scheduled, I receive a list of 100 changes to make.1 -
And here i am. Waiting outside, with a literally freezing weather, for my boss, to work on a freaking saturday. Halp!6
-
My biggest dev regret is not starting earlier. I started learning how to code only 5 years ago, when I was 19. God, I wish I started earlier.
-
A year ago was my last rant post, now I'm back around the same dates, that's curious, isn't it?
BTW here are also # functions? I have been on twitter for a long time, I acquired some bad habits! 😅4 -
!dev
fuckfuckfuck
My studies at the university begin in two weeks in a city 4 hours from where I live and I still have no place to stay! I am such an idiot for applying for appartments and rooms too late... and when I did, I only applied for 2 or 3 at a time and now I didn't get any of them. I had to travel there two times now already, each trip cost me 100€ and my time is running out.
FUUUUUUUUCK I hate myself right now, this is so typical for me...
I really hope I learn from this.6 -
Thinking of making some themes. Do people still do that these days? Is it a big market place?
Might start small with a jekyll github pages theme and see if I actually finish it.1 -
Had a release retro today.
We had the usual Trello board with columns for "what went well, what was bad, what can we improve" etc.
columns for the bad and the improvements had 10-20 cards each.
column for what went well was empty.... -
Two architectures to support, on one everything went smoothly, other one I spend since Monday till yesterday 2am to make it work. Now time for half-day meeting and if it compiles in the meantime, I can release today before leaving work. Sounds like a solid plan, Friday afternoon release. What could go wrong? And I hoped it will work nicelly on Monday, latest Tuesday.
-
About to work on a small feature for my job's web app since I took a caffeine pill to finish up a college assignment. It's 12:34am; at least it's just a column addition to the DB.
-
$cash me outside, how 'bout that?
What do people use (I'm specifically interested in UK, but all answers welcome!) for P2P payments?
I like square cash, just so that I can say that. Monzo next, and the I guess direct bank transfer but only with a handful of people I really know. You wouldn't want to give it to stranger, and its a cumbersome process.4 -
I do some freelancing on the site, make a bit of cash and it's a bit different to the day job.
It can itself be pretty dull or boring, but at least I can drop the client when the project's over and try to find something interesting.
Anyways, I'm logged into a client Google account to do some domain admin on a GSuite account. Logged into Incognito so that it doesn't interrupt my usual session.
Get a bit distracted and sidetracked, end up searching for porn... in Incognito... in the client's session! 💀
Quickly clear search history and hope that does it!
Tell me someone else has done this too??4 -
Have any devs done bar work before..?
I've always enjoyed doing things outside of work, and I work 3-4 days a week in my main job to create time for this. It's great for my mental health, and means I can optimise the main job for pay/good benefits and fulfil my "other needs" (stimulation/challenge/enjoyment) in other places.
The main things for me are dev contracting on the side or acting/singing, to a lesser extent travel, a bit of activism and law study. Just because 🤷♂️
Especially re: my last rant with *that* email from HR on Friday, I'm tempted to be a bit more strict about only doing three days and picking up something else.
Although I know the pay is awful, I really want to try bar work on the side just to do something different.
Has anyone else done bar work before?9 -
I'm very confused by the notifs , everything ok? @dfox
I should mention I have gotten some 20+ mins late (I know cause they mention me whilst I look at the rant and then I get it) -
Nobody likes chatbots/conversational UI for anything other than chat, right?
I have a savings app with conversational UI. I press one of a number of options e.g. "Savings". There's this artificial delay after the network request has been made so that it looks like the app is typing back at you. Why???
You then get another limited set of options, or you can tap "Back". These options are supposedly as if you typed it back as a response.
I can get three "questions" (levels) deep, let's say to deposit cash, only for it to turn around and say that I've reached a daily/weekly limit? At each level there's this awful delay, and you already knew I wouldn't be able to perform the action regardless of my responses after my very first "message"!
Why is this good/popular? And the whole thing totally breaks if there's any loss of connectivity.
Stop it. Please. -
That thing where you stay up way too late and end up dereleasing and refactoring a huge chunk of The Monolith....
