So, my boyfriend's phone was stolen and my Google Drive account was synced on that phone. Also noticed that someone attempted to change my Gmail account. I get that fingerprint authentication is very convenient but I'd never use it (not even for privacy reasons that much).
When someone guesses/gets your password you can just say "alright let's change my password"

Hey everyone! As most of you probably already know, months back we added the ability to change your username on devRant (every 6 months, via settings). We've had some people recently express a desire to change their username again, beforr that period, for whatever reason.
I just reset the 6 month period for everyone, so if you had changed your username previously, you can now change it again.

So yeah, the name change is done. Me making a joke out of being called a code slut clearly backfired and people just started calling me a slut or inferring I was a slut or something unsavory because of an online username. Lesson learned. A few lessons, in fact.

Was working in small startup with great people on new projects, but for very low salary and shitty conditions.

With much help from a friend here (an unofficially related app, so I'm unsure of username here), I successfully dual booted my laptop to Arch Linux.
Tried Debian, but must have missed something, because it tried to format my whole SSD, which isn't good since my work software only works in windows.

More than 3GB ram is useless on android phones. Change my mind.
I bought cheap lg g5. It has 4gb ram (my old phone had 1gb ram). I have opened chrome with 4 tabs, an AAA game, devRant, Instagram, a vpn app, android settings and I'm listening music. There is still free 1,2 gb ram. Also this is not my everyday usage. I use maximum 3 apps at same time.22 -

My new job is so damn awesome! I had pain in my jaw for weeks, I got a teething rail for the nights, but the pain was still there. Since I am on my new job it's totally gone. I am so much more relaxed and more productive now.

It is not entirely because of syllabus, its also because of professors who had not updated their knowledge since they got a job. Therefore they cannot impart proper basics on students.
If you want things to change, train students directly in the industry with versions of these professors UPDATED.6 -
So my country's president just decided that Turkey is too cool to set clocks back for an hour and it fucked all of my device's times up. And I'm not even sure how to convert time zones anymore.. And some devices (un) update time back to summer time so logs and notifications go crazy.
This is just a stupid idea that doesn't make the single bit of sense, are they that unoccupied to change time on their whim ?! it takes lot of effort and time to change because making the change is easy, but inspecting and debugging what other things the change affects takes most of the time and effort.
it would be nice if project managers were able to wrap their head around this.

People, even on devrant, are complaining about having to change their Twitter passwords. A major security event is not the only occasion to change your password (for anything).

This is actually a psoitive story. I always used to be someone working on his things alone. It was great, I got shit done, I learned something. No one stressing you. But I was also lonely. The thing is that this behavior not only applied to developing. I was also able to observer that behavior in other parts of my life.
So it was time for a change. And I made a change.
It all began by switching my field of studies. Well, not really the field but some details. I switched from plain old computer science to computer science combined with media design. Here in Germany we have a nice word for it. Mediendesigninformatik.
I wish I had made that change earlier. Nonetheless it's never too late to make a change. So I began going to creative courses, like animation or graphic design. Directly from the start I made sure to talk to people. Make them remember me, offered my help because I already had experience with some things etc.
Next up was to get a job. So I got one. Now I'm working as a Game Master for a branding of escape rooms. Fun job. Also something different from developing all day, which is quite nice to do sometimes.
This job is where my change begun. The people there are amazing. I felt instantly like I've found new friends. Actually I also developed a crush on someone there and we are possibly dating soon. Not quite sure about that yet though. That also isn't the point here.
So a month later I moved out of my parents house. Living together with friends now and it's great. I'm so much more creative, so much more shit happens. I feel like a different human.
So I continued working on myself. I wanted to get really good at it. I wanted my groups to succeed whole having a challenge. They were supposed to leave happily, even when they didn't make it. Of course not everyone can be satisfied, but I noticed a positive change. Which motivated me to redesign and rethink the tool we use to give the players hints, manage their time and other stuff.
I was scared at first, but eventually I showed them what I did. Their feedback was surprisingly positive and while it will perhaps never replace our actual tools because our chef is a cheapskate, I was happy to achieve something. This continued. I made more stuff and formed connections.
Now I'm not working on things alone anymore. Recently I started working together with someone and this also was the first time I've made actual money of it. It's not a lot, but I was able to live half a month of it.
This is the beginning and I hope there will be much more. The moment I started showing other people my work and feeling confident about it made me change. I also learned to appreciate other people's compliments and kind of get an high of them, but I'm not sad when they don't like it. I feel like I've grown as a human and are more mature.

DevRant users (and my wife) are the only people that know that I have applied for 2 new jobs! I’ve already had a phone interview with each. Tomorrow I have a 2 hour in-person technical interview, and last night I completed a technical assessment/sample application for the other position!
Things are moving fast, but I don’t want to let friends and family know yet, until things get a little more certain.

Hi there, I don't know what to do...
I got interviewed, and offered by two companies.
One startup, being around for 5 years, they loved me and they offered me a whole project to lead in a team of three, starting from scratch, in something that I am really interested in, plus the location is central and amazing.
The other one is a bigger company, located a bit far away from the city centre, the position is senior but not lead, is not an agency but they work on a huge range of products, so I will never get bored working on the same thing all the time.
Pay is the same, the first one I possibly could negotiate a bit more, the second one I can't for sure.
I am a hit scared of getting bored in the first one, even though I have been working on single products company all my life, now I wanted to change.
What do you guys suggest? Any other parameters I would need to consider?7 -

Hey Linux users!
I have successfully convinced a friend to change from MacOS to a Linux based system (because she needs new hardware).
Now I am asking myself which distribution would be most qualified for her. She is a relatively old lady and only knows Mac (no Windows or Linux knowledge), so it should be easier for her if the new system would look similar to the Mac environment she knows. (Using console is no problem.)
Another point is compatibility: She needs some (commercial) software (like GitKraken and design stuff), so it would be cool if the Linux versions of them would work on the distro (for one or two programmes Wine is needed).
After my own reasearch I came up with Elementary OS or Gmac.
Because I have no experience with Mac I want to ask you: Has anyone here some experiences with these two systems and/or with a change from Mac to Linux and could recommand a distribution or desktop environment?

Today I got a change request that told me I needed to create a report showing orders broken down by their order types as percentages.
Now the order types part involve SQL queries that translate business rules into multiple table joins and it's quite nasty (200 + lines or so).
Naturally the change request doesn't mention any of these business rules and how to tell that orders are of a specific type... but alas!
It teaches me how to calculate a percentage :)

I have a genuine question for y’all folks: How do you define what’s your next job going to be ? As in what you set your mind to, I guess. I’ve been through multiple stages of thoughts during the past two years and I find myself stuck.
On the one hand I work at a decent company and I have a great team with a lot of benefits and an OK salary but on the other hand I want change, more challenges and to get a little bit more of 💰(I’m not complaining about what I have but I’m clearly on the low tiers of the salary range for a software engineer).
At first I thought I wanted to completely change my work area and go for music, then I thought I wanted to work for the biggest IT players (Google, Microsoft, etc…). Turns out none of these two ideas really suit me. I also don’t want to work in a startup, I’ve only had bad experiences so far and don’t seek to reproduce them yet again.
So I guess a more precise question is: If you were in my shoes, with all that in mind, what would you do?
As for the reasoning as to why I’m asking here: devRant is literally the only place I know with so many people that work in the same field, but that also have a lot of different experiences and background 😁2 -

I just had a flashback to the good ole days of using HTML tables for website layouts. Tables within tables within tables were pretty ridiculous, but they really got the job done pretty well back then. I'm a physics student who have problem with the "theory without every application (even theoretical)" approach of my university. I'm at the second year. The year is near to end i will pass at the first year of Informatic Engineering, one of my real True love who took from me a lot of time. I don't know what will happen... The moment I turn off my laptop in anticipation of an hour or two of recreational YouTube binging and then rest
- my Bluetooth headphones run out of juice, courtesy of over 12 hours of semi-constant usage and the fact that I didn't think to charge them overnight
- In a moment of perspective change I instantly realize how to solve the problem I've been struggling with for the past 3 hours, ensuring that I'll keep thinking of work for the following 5 too.9 -
So I just changed from SublimeText to Atom and so far it's pretty neat. What do you guys think about Atom?22

Anyone ever consider hanging up the office gig and pursuing a career in teaching Tech/IT? I’ve been part of a mentorship program at work for university kids, and it’s probably the most rewarding work I’ve done in a long time. I know the pay would be much less, but maybe I wouldn’t die of a heart attack at 50 like I’m heading for now?2

Many years in the same company waiting for an improvement in my career. Result: role change from Solution Manager to ICT consultant (better before) and Salary increase of 20% (better now). I simply do not understand my company behavior. Happy and Sad at the same time. What do you think? Titles do matter or not?

Holy shit why does change management have to be such garbage? I've never worked anywhere with a formal change process that felt remotely like it adds value. It seems like it's even WORSE when there's a dedicated change/process team. They just get super edgy and jaded, likely because no one wants to follow their ridiculous requirements, and bitch at people whenever the real world happens and things have to happen "out of band".2

I had an overview of the backlog, blocked, active issues, could see who works on what and so on ...
Accidentally pressed the back button, returned to the project. Now it's a single big list with only issue type, description and deadline. It's pretty much a guessing game, which feature is open. Their seems to be no way to change that, not even deleting any data.

Got offered a new job with a 50% pay increase after 3 interviews, which only one of them was more technical, and it didn't involve any leet code or anything.
My friends coworker tried applying and failed
multiple times previously, so I'm feeling wayyy under qualified because my OOP knowledge sucks, I'm a self taught developer. They asked me more about engineering web solutions - how I would handle a lot of traffic , how I've designed a system where it holds a lot of requests, what do I know about databases, what engines I used and why. I'm very scared to accept, and I like my current company. What do?7 -
