I have been in front of this bloody screen for 13 hours now. I'm also ill. And my washing machine broke today and couldn't be fixed. My brain right now:1
-
I work 9 hours a day. I started attending a masters that assumes you work 8 hours so lessons start one hour earlier than I'm supposed to clock out. I told the boss, and he was MAD. Even though I told him I'm taking the job cause I wanna do a post-grad.
What do I do now.9 -
*Task too simple but says "discuss about it"*
*I'm weary of its simplicity, it seems deceptive*
Me: hey, about this thing to discuss, what about it? Is there something I need to know about that I don't?
Boss: read the code
*I'm now even more weary of the task* -
Boss assigned code cleanup to me. We put up eslint and fixed a couple of issues, all nice and cute. Now, he wants me to find any redundant code and remove it (redundant fields in config objects). Sounds doable right?
WRONG!
Because we're writing fucking ExtJS. This abomination that is still called a "web framework" in lieu of its former glory supports no typescript, no code intel, no JSDoc, no nothing. Absolutely heinous and deplorable. Add insult to injury, our code on it is even worse. NO single component reused except from a couple REALLY fucking badly written ones, because every component queries for shit outside its jurisdiction so it's all a dependency spaghetti. Everything else is just copy-paste. Barely anything works as intended anymore in this bloody joke of an app.
I tell him in a meeting, I can prepare an automated solution. Some script or something that runs on a file watcher. All nice and dandy. A weekend and a Monday later, I get tired and do something else to clear up my mind. Show him some progress in that other thing. He's like:
Boss: that's good and all but did you remove *insert misused config that got everywhere during copy paste* like I told you to?
Me: I'm still working on it. I switched cause I got tired a bit with the automation.
Boss: automation?
Me: We were talking about in the meeting. *Explains again*
Boss: That's not what we agreed upon
Mfw I've been rambling uselessly on the meeting about it just for you to put me down and make me remove all that copy pasted GUNK from the melting hot garbage that is our codebase BY HAND? All the 150 occurrences of it? What do you think I am, a fucking robot?2 -
It's been 7 months working with ExtJS and I've just about Ext.Fucking had it.
(Maybe I'll make a more extensive rant about it later. For now, take this)4 -
I signed up for a uni lesson on MATLAB, the prof just changed his mind because he is braindead enough not to know MATLAB is not free, and decided to go with fucking C, because you know, there hasn't been a fucking assignment in my uni that wasn't in C except the OOP one. Miss me with that shit. I'm now going to develop automatic memory management and OOP libraries in C because if I write another program without proper OOP I will kill myself.4

Even if they were confirmed imposters, does it matter? If you wanna stay, stay and go with the flow. If you wanna go, just go. I've had lots of friends who were actually imposters, and this developed my imposter syndrome, but in the end I found that it doesn't matter; if you enjoy their presence, stay. If you don't, leave them.

In retrospection to the uproar about Qt tightening its license in a move against probably its biggest user (KDE), what do you think KDE should do from now on? Should they just trust Qt? Should they take measures? Should they fork Qt? Or, in a moment of utter madness, nuke everything and go Gtk?
-
Rant time. Oh boi.
So, a bit of context: I am a university student in Greece and I have a desktop PC with elementary OS on it. When the unis closed down because of Coronavirus, I moved back to my parents', without my PC, only a usb stick with elementary OS installed on it. That was before the lockdown. My parents have a desktop PC and my old laptop, both with Windows rn. I'm only able to work using Linux, so I've been just popping that elementary OS USB stick whenever I needed to work.
All cool and good. Until the usb got full. It was a 16GB one after all. No biggie, I bought a new 64GB one from a well known Greek tech shop along with a webcam my mother needed. It was a LEXAR one.
They fucking took a week to transfer it. As if the closest shop to me was in fucking Germany. For context, the drawing tablet I bought from China the other day only did 2 weeks to come. During this time I could barely use Linux because my USB stick had only some 600MB free.
Ok, wtv I said to myself. I am a patient person after all. I received the USB stick, along with the webcam, in good condition, in their packaging. Alright. I dd'ed everything from the 16GB stick to the 64GB one and then I extend the partition. Everything works flawlessly. And it's faster too.
Next day, I boot up from it again. It boots up good. Nice, time to do some work. I open my editor. And it fucking freezes. The editor is not some VSCode or Atom or any of that heavy shit, it's just elementary OS Code. A very lightweight Gtk3 app. Strangely though, the rest of my OS (the dock autohide, eg.) Seems totally responsive. I try to open another app. No luck. Not even switching TTYs work. Good shit. I force shutdown my PC. I try to boot again from that piece of shit. And guess what! NO BOOT BITCH. Like, fuck you. I boot from my previous 16GB one. Linux won't recognize it. No /dev/sdc like I used to have. Ok, lsusb. Nope, nothing. I disconnect it and reconnect it, and lsusb. An empty entry appears.I run it a couple of times, and the it disappears again. I switch to TTY 2. I get read errors and usb error -71.
And I want to fucking explode
I call back to support for the warranty coverage. I wait for a good 10 minutes and a nice lady picks up. I tell her the issue. She says that the support team will call me for the issue this day it the next day.
I hang up.
It feels like some fucking prank. YOU MOTHERFUCKING TOOK SO LONG TO DELIVER MY SHIT. Not to mention that the shitty courier service they are working with wouldn't deliver the goods to my home because it's slightly out of town. AND NOW YOU ARE DELAYING MY WARRANTY RETURN? HOW THE FLYING FUCK DID YOU BECOME A WELL KNOWN TECH SHOP WITH SUCH SHITTY SERVICE?
IF YOUR BRAINS WERE DYNAMITE YOU WOULDN'T HAVE ENOUGH TO BLOW YOUR NOSES.
YOUR THE SERVICE EQUIVALENT OF A PARTICIPATION AWARD.
Foreigners' view of Greeks suddenly doesn't seem so unreasonable. Yes, we are fucking lazy asses. And we also hate that. We hate each other for that very reason. May this country not live any longer.6 -
I'm an oddball. I use elementaryOS code. Mainly because I like its snappiness and simplicity. It has a bit of git integration, a bit of a file manager sidebar, and autosaving.

If IBM does not their new COBOL Devs to make the move to different fucking language then they are total idiot's.8
-
If all programming languages but one got deprecated, that one should be Rust. Honestly, whoever designed it is a fucking genius.9

Nothing better than Rust and LALRPOP. I've been trying to play with Bison and C++ for the whole quarantine and nothing would compile. I just sat for two days with Rust and LALRPOP and I was able to make a small interpreter that can make new variables, calculate simple expressions and print stuff. Like this:
var = 5 + 3;
print var;
var = 2 * var + 4;
var2 = 3 * var + 3 * (var + 4);
print var2 * var;
And all this in just two days. I have no Rust experience except for toying with it on an online playground. I have no LALRPOP nor parsing experience. Two days.
Now, it's not like I wouldn't be able to do this in C++ too if somebody told me how to. But nobody has. And the documentation online is gruesome. None of the bison example I found online could compile. This is why documentation matters people! Honestly, if there's one reason I think old projects die, it's because they ether don't update themselves OR they don't update their documentations. Look at the US government now, looking for COBOL programmers.4 -
Quack quack, I'm a duck.
And it makes me wanna quack.
Btw why did autocorrect correct "duck" to "fuck" twice?2 -
LLVM. Fun as fuck. Especially when all the C++ API examples from online don't even compile anymore.4
-
LLVM AND BISON FIX YOUR FUCKING DOCUMENTATIONS
I've been trying the whole quarantine period to make some small Bison and LLVM snippets because I've been planning to make a compiler for my own language. But I haven't been able to make a SINGLE THING WORK because these projects have the WORST DOCUMENTATION I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE FOR AN OSS PROJECT. Seriously, no basic references, no tutorials, no nothing. It's as if they are trying to obscure it all! I'm looking for alternatives now.8 -
It's a GUI for Wine (a Windows compatibility layer) and I think it looks awesome! Feel free to use it!
https://github.com/aggalex/...
But this ain't the best I *Will* have written. I plan in the near future to create an app that will connect the computer and a phone. But not in the traditional sense. the phone will become an extra screen for the computer, which will essentially be the a copy of all the icons of the dock of your elementary OS computer. In other words, a connected phone won't be useless to your PC workflow. It will however do the things other similar projects do, like copying files, a shared clipboard, etc. Stay tuned, I plan for this to be done in the next 3 to 4 months!2 -
Today I'm deleting my GitHub account and all my projects and I'm going to live with Vegan Gains man. Wish me luck!4

I think my coding hobby has become an addiction. I literally pulled off two all-nighters for a personal project and a university exercise which is due in 2 days (so I had plenty of time).4
-
Good ol' fucking brain-dead autistic dipshit me just pulled an all-nighter reading rants on fucking devrant
Now wish me a good day's sleep you perfect-ragging entertaining bastards filling up devrant with the best posts I've ever read about programming.4 -
When I tried to install Android x86 on a partition on my production machine, and by mistake installed it using GPT on my MBR machine.
I pulled 2 all nighters to fix that.
That was when I learned about GPT and MBR.
