My react code in production broke because one of my senior renamed a field in sql query to 'id' instead of invoiceid.8

Big boss: Last year we had much more revenue and profits than our expectations, and this success is thanks to all of you. Thank you! You made an excellent work! Impressive!
Some employee: Can we all get a raise?
Big boss: Wtf that question again? No way!9 -
This is Ubuntu's 20th year, yet it still doesn't hibernate properly.
23.10 often reboots instead of suspending. At least it completes the process, because previous versions would hang midway.
Maybe Ubuntu 44.10 will have it fixed.5 -
i've built a profitable full stack SaaS application, from scratch, by myself, that requires 0 maintenence

Best part of working from home? Oh boy, here I go
1. NO COMMUTE !! Fuck public transport. I can just grab my laptop straight to my bed, get comfortable and work in whatever posture I wish to.
2. Relaxation and peace of mind. The local park, library, football ground. I can go anywhere to get work done. All I need is my phone and laptop.
3. Better food - I can cook my own food. Dieting actually works by eating home-made food and not the fried bullshit we eat outside.
4. No office politics - Remote working means you don't have to think about being a circle and getting liked or not. Get your work done and that's it.
5. No "Extra" Activities - We all know HRs are just bored af people making employees have "fun" activities just to push a "culture" agenda on LinkedIn. Umm no thanks.
6. No toxicity - Well, this one is a doozie, you don't get workplace toxicity but you do get home toxicity. People assuming that you stay in ur room all day and do nothing. I'd still take home toxicity though.
7. If there is no work, I don't have to pretend that I am working and hiding my screen from my boss. I can just play video games in that time.
8. Option to start a side-hustle. You have more chances to retain some energy after your shift to start investing/putting time into something that can make you extra cash.
9. Worldwide opportunities - Because of WFH, I work with clients from Netherlands, Estonia, London and Cayman Islands. It never would have happened if I was in an office job.
10. Only work, no extra bullshit - be it smoke breaks, casual tea, conferences, work summits etc. None of that and I don't want it.
11. Your errands get done - Need to go to the dentist at 10 am? You can do that. Need to pick up your kid at 3 pm? You can do that. You need 5 pm time dedicated to go the gym? You can do that.
In conclusion, I absolutely vouch for WFH and would never take WFO for as long as possible.
WFH FTW !!!9 -
I paid off my student loan today. It's not the USA level of student loans but still, my chest feels lighter.2

Phone: you have unsused Apps. Remove them maybe to save memory?
The unused apps: all default apps which can't be uninstalled only deactivated.
Do you notice something, phone?2 -
- I'm trying to connect to the server at your location. What's the IP address?
- You can just write localhost there.

Buy a $2000 suit that you will wear once or twice a year and nobody cares.
Buy a $120 keyboard that you will literally use everyday and people lose their minds.12 -
Our most senior and most competent backend developer got fired, he got told he "wasn't committed enough". This dude did the most complex tasks really quickly (and competently), could configure the most boring stuff off the top of his mind, and brought great culture to the company from his previous 20+ years of experience. He was about to implement some cool automation stuff, and improved our processes a great deal.
Now he's being let go. I was fearing *I* would get fired because I'm much slower and less knowledgeable than this guy.
When I talked to him, he figured the so-called "lack of commitment" was because he had missed a few standups the last few days, and got late to today's standup.
Now the boss (who is a less experienced than this dev who was let go, but co-founder of the company) was changing the database credentials (which we somehow have access to) and had the product down for like half an hour because of it.
I don't think firing this developer was a wise decision at all, and that's putting it generously. What a shame. Now I'm also a bit scared because the responsibilities of this developer might likely fall upon me. But generally I think we're worse off without this guy, and getting someone as good as him will take time.19 -
nobody in my team works at my location. they are all at different sites of the world.
can i have the option to work 100% remote please?
my company:
no :-)
oh, it is soooo hard to recruit new team members :-) what in the world could we possibly do??5 -
Today I was 25 years old, asking for a raise or a opportunity to reach the next level of my career.
My department manager simply said:
"I'm sorry, but in terms of salary you have already reached the end of your career."
Bye then :)34 -
Got fired for asking for a restructuring of the workload and/or more non-foreign, in-office devs. I was the only dev for dozens of projects.7

Oh boy, my riskiest coding decision was certainly that one time when I refactored some 50k lines of critical legacy shit code in 3 days, straight up merged everything into master and then deployed to prod.
Luckily there was only one minor bug I had to fix after that... phew...
(To my defense: I was solo-working on it - the infamous CMS Of Doom™)2 -
So.. the software team I work with still maintain Java 6 apps.. meanwhile management keep asking when we're "moving to the cloud".
DevRant posts are too small for me to describe our technical debt.... 🤦10 -
My colleague wanted me to examine a script issue. I open it up, and it took several minutes to comprehend how it worked. Once it finally clicked:
Me: I can’t decide if this is idiotic or genius.
Colleague: Well, YOU wrote it.
Me: Oh… Genius it is, then! -
How I see GPU brands:
- Team blue, Intel:
Oldschool autistic engineers, working GPU but not practical
- Team red, AMD:
Competitive but anarchist, horrid Windows drivers, but good on opensource, anti-mainstream
- Team green, nVidia:
Way too greedy cunts circlejerking each others off during breaks (like Apple employees), delivering on performance, but wayyy overpriced and scammy tactics6 -
I'm happy that Twitter employees just up and left when Elon Musk tried to bully them into working 100-hour weeks or have them leave the company. (According to what I read online).
It's not about the downfall of Twitter, but the employees showing the world that they can get better jobs elsewhere, if they are pushed over the edge.
I hope it sends a message to all douchebag CEOs and managers around the world that do the same kinda thing.14 -
Today, I dropped my 5900x while cleaning the computer. It's dead. pins got bent and one pin got loose.
I feel like crying... please send prayers and thoughts.
