Argh recruiters!! After 4 emails back and forth because he won’t tell me the company name I agree to a call. Basic role for a basic company. Acknowledges he’s asking for me to take a pay cut but doesn’t listen to the reasons why I would. I ask about the hardware - doesn’t know. Tells me that two competing frameworks are being used. Wants me to agree to an interview without listening 😡🤬😡then tells me I will need to do a technical test, jog the f**k on.2

I had a dream freelance job recently. It was a lot of a fun and I really wanted to continue to work there.
However it started to become apparent my manager was a mess. He would often turn up hungover and couldn’t follow conversation. When asked about docs he said he wouldn’t keep any documentation “so no one could take over”. The whole attitude and professionalism was awful.
Some days on release he (and another member of the team) would turn up to work four hours late as they’d been out the night before. I would absorb all of the impact. Technically I felt he was quite significantly junior than myself. Management saw, directors saw, no one did anything.
To cut a long story short - I raised it with HR, I was told unless I raised an “official grievance” nothing would be done. I asked if I could move - I was met with a shrug “we don’t know”
I eventually reached a point where I felt my only real power is to walk away.
I now have no confidence in HR at all. I don’t think I’ll ever involve or raise anything with them again. 😔6 -
“Hey - just calling you to give you an update”
Great - sorry can you refresh my memory what was this for?
“So I was about to put you through for a client but they’re no longer accepting CVs so just to update you that’s not happening”
Sorry, what was the client again?
“Oh I can’t say, but they’re no longer accepting CVs”
“...Thanks, goodbye.”
*So you call me to tell me that you can’t give my details to a client that you can’t disclosure....get off my line 🤬😡🤬*3 -
“Hey, thanks for accepting my request we have a role you might be interested in.”
Sure, happy to move forward
“Great you just need to a complete a Technical test”
How long is the recommend time?
And I quote:
“It’s entirely up to you how much time you spend on this task. I’ve seen tasks done in 45 mins with minimal effort previously. I’ve also seen others take a week on it. Totally your call”
——
...so you contact me to offer me a role and want me to invest up-to 1 week on a technical when I’ve not even visited your offices. How about no.2 -
“Hey congratulations, they want you to come in for an interview in Leeds this week - you’re happy to relocate right?”
Ace! Sure, I’m open to it, since they know I’m in London are they OK with a FaceTime / Skype call?
“No, they would like a face to face”
Sure no problem, as it’s a last minute ticket it’s going to be about £90 return are they OK to cover my train expenses? It’s about a 3 hours each way.
“Um...probably not. I can ask, also they need you to wear a suit Mon to Thursday but they have dress down Friday.”
..um, I can wear whatever they need that’s fine, it’s just a tad unusual. Let me know about the travel.
..but they agreed to your rate.
🤨

? Am I being unreasonable? I thought it was quite a large upfront investment and risk to ask.... 6 hours travelling and £903 -
Hey guys so we need to start taking accessibility seriously, it’s the law - right now we currently do nothing.
So let’s start with something super simple. Alt text has to be provided for an image...
“This is all bollocks let’s be honest”
😳🤦🏻♂️
Um...so I don’t make the rules, the W3C define the standards for the web. Disabled users matter...7 -
So my office manager decided to ban kitchen utensils in the office. Part of the reason was that there was too much stealing. Apparently too many mugs, knives, plates & spoons have gone missing for it to be just through loss.
I tried to reason with this office manager. I asked if we really want to create a culture of mistrust where we ban basic utilities like we’re children.
I appealed to the business logic do we really want freelancers going out to grab a coffee 10 minutes a day over a period of a year.
I tried to appeal to the digital nature of the office can we “source the solution from the office”
The other office have to bring in their own utensils but the other office has a canteen.
Essentially I feel like this was a power issue a decision was made I’m not allowed to question it.
Apparently my “behaviour” has been flagged with the CTO. 🤣🤨
I have to stir my tea with a knife unless I put stuff in my desk.
As a solution I decided to reach out to several green companies that provide disposable cutlery and kitchen where they agreed to send a sample which I put in the kitchen. I have a feeling this will be taken as hostile move in of what is: a solution.

I’ve started at a new place - the team use Trello to share code 😳They are happy to zip a folder, upload and download each time a project is updated.
I’ve tried to sell the benefits of Git however some have such conviction that it would be worse. FML.9
