Dear all wonderful ranters,
I apologize profusely in advance if over the next few days I cannot contain my anger at people and rant about non-dev things. I promise I will try my best to not do this, but there are very few places (none) other than here where I feel comfortable enough to express myself freely and not censor my words.
I will be working as a security guard (3rd job) for a car show full of pretentious assholes who have a tendency to think I'm their servant. I have wonderful bosses who have my back, and there are truly amazing people in attendance as well, but if someone tries to run me over again after a long ass day, I might need to vent.
I fully accept any and all down votes, and will likely delete the rant after it's out of my system, unless there's a conversation going in comments (I wouldn't do that to you).
Please bear with me while I try boot to strangle everyone I come across. I'm hoping this year is the year everyone is nice, but history tells me that's naive and won't happen.
All my love,
Your (co)queen who may end up arrested for using her bionic arm to rip their balls off and feed them to their wives10 -
Hey DevRant Community :)
I've been a silence lurker till now, but I really do enjoy scrolling through your new rants everyday, :D ... I'm now quite terrified of my first job interview, but that's alright... I guess... ._.
What I'm trying to say is.... Have a great day everyone :31 -

"As it turns out, this world isn't all that complicated. It's pretty simple actually. It's all a game, a very simple game. Of course, some will try to make it difficult. But you can handle them, I know it. I know you can!"
There's a lot of truth in that. When you get into the depths of how the world works, things turn out to be pretty simple.
One thing I cannot rationalize though. The human spirit. The desires that it embodies. I've had this question for so long - what makes us humans human?
If for example a future surgeon - able to exchange individual cells between me and you - would do so, at which point do you become me, and the other way around? 50+% exchange? But that'd mean that at least part of me is still "you". In that state, are you truly you?
Not sure what the cellular definition of an individual is, given that we're headed towards a bionic society where synthetic organs will likely become more relevant than the donated parts of me that I've recently applied as a donor for. I wholeheartedly encourage that future, but the philosophical questions that surround it become more relevant.
How about the impact of influencers on the mind? For example, I've seen the term "certified enganeers" become a trend here, which I'm very grateful for. It does raise a question though. If for example I were to die, would the term live on? And if so, is that a part of what makes me "me"? Would a part of me live on in you? Would your spirit be partially me, due to mere influence?
What makes up the human creature anyway? I think of my own body as a mere vessel for my mind, but I can't quite grasp what makes up the mind, and philosophical questions like "if I were to upload my mind to a robot and instruct it to kill me, would that carbon copy become *me*?"
The human nature is such a weird thing.. and technology doesn't make it any simpler. Is it really just a simple game, with simple rules and e.g. a biological program running inside of a biological motor? Or is there more to it?25 -
I've always wondered.. how much human does it require one to be human?
Like, how many organs, how many cells would be required to be copied to an artificial self, in order for that being to be considered a human?
Is it just the brain? Does it take the brain itself to be transplanted to an artificial Demi Machina type of being? Or is it just the information? Can a brain - just the information held within - be cloned into an artificial brain and be considered a conscious demi-human?
For that matter, what is consciousness anyway? What does it take to be human? What does it take to transfer one into an artificial self?
If one were to take organs and replace them with bionic parts, at which point would that being stop being human? Would it ever stop, if the information were to be preserved?7 -
They just announced Ubuntu 18.04, that will be called "bionic beaver" (i wish i could adopt one of these)
But what scared me the most is that for this website, the #1 feature worth being announced is that the OS will fully support color emojis.
Can't wait for Ubuntu 18.10, Cancerous Crap.

I hate it that I'm still forced to use Ubuntu 16.04 and can't upgrade to bionic beaver.tried it on vm (for testing)loved new features and default gnome interface but even after switching to xorg most of my tool were still not running properly or crashing, most important factor is that there is still no official cuda support and installing gcc g++ 6 and symlinks are nerve racking. On top of that upgrading to 18.04 LTS on my main machine will leave me with broken packages and dependencies.
p.s. for people who are going to reply saying that these issue can be solved. Please try updating your work machine and spend hours fix these issues1 -
Installed Ubuntu 18.04 on my system. It feels so good to be back after a year and half approx. It feels refreshing using 18.04, let's see how much time can it hold me. Maybe I'll go on arch after this, last 2 times have been disastrous, but they say 3rd time's the charm. I never found who the fuck "they" is represented everywhere in these type of lines.

Installed Ubuntu 18.04. Loved the minimal installation feature. Reduces installation time and the time you spend removing everything unnecessary

So lately, I've been screen recording when I am working on my projects just for fun. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver) and SimpleScreenRecorder for screen recording. I'm using VidCutter for video editing but for some reason, it's giving me some errors and not able to save my edited videos. I don't want to do heavy video editing. I just want something like Windows movie make if some of you remember that.4

As a long time Ubuntu user, last month I upgraded from Xenial to Bionic to try the new Gnome based desktop.
At first I thought it was a good transition, everything was working fine, beautiful UI, nice animations, so I installed all my tools and started the real work... then the problems started. The memory usage was always very high and only getting higher, the animations were stuttering and laggy, and it was having an unrecoverable freeze at least twice a week. Searching the web I was seeing more and more people complaining about freezes, lags, bugs, memory leaks, password input field bugs... damn, how I missed Unity! That was it, Gnome Shell made me miss Unity more and more.
This week I installed Unity 7 and purged Gnome Shell from Bionic. Now I'm happy again!
It's so good to be free of the anxiety caused by the lack of stability of the system, so good to know that the system will not break or freeze if I'm doing a resource intensive task. Now he sh** is working fast and stable, and I'm here wondering why such a good DE could be dumped for something so buggy like Gnome.1 -
advantages of bionic systems:
- energy efficiency
- flexibility
- low friction
- compact size
- water resistance
advantages of mechanical systems:
- precision
- rotation is available
- scalability
- can change parts6 -
A link I've been visiting quite often since I moved to Ubuntu 18.04
https://askubuntu.com/questions3 -
I wonder what the time requirements would be to use a standard lib to animate a robotic arm that chokes people so hard their eyes pop out of their heads
What would be the N per cm2 ? How do I calculate things like mechanical advantage cumulatively over finger segments or should I make it one blunt clamp ?
Is there a sensor I could attach to determine the deformation force and yielding of the flesh beneath the hand so as not to ramp the actuator up too high causing the tips to simply go straight through
And can I wear the thing and operate it via a blue tooth enabled audio capture device so I don’t have to add the scope of a mechanism to lure these bastards close and can just chase them joyously down the halls and position the hand manually around their neck
I’ll call it the mechanized bionic joy inducer
Or maybe arm. The automated rectification machine
Maybe hand
But I don’t know how to fit any word but happiness into that acronym
I’ll think on it again
I hate you all you disgusting garbage filled diseased fucking wastes of space and air ! And who fucking said you people can breathe my air anyway ? It’s my air get your own you chomo fucking fucks !4 -
Is there a better way to run SC:BW on Ubuntu bionic than VirtualBox with the free IE11-Win7 image?
The game keeps flickering and it's quite annoying...(using the experimental Direct3D from VBox extensions)
(Note: Wine craps itself when battle.net client tries to run so that's not an option)1
