Fun fact: Michael Widenius named "MySQL" after his daughter My. When MySQL was acquired by sun, he decided to start a new open source database, "MariaDB", named after his second daughter Maria.
This guy is (partially) responsible for two of the largest databasesystems in the world.
Imagine his daughters apply for a database engineering job one day. During application process: "One of the largest databases in the world was named after me..." 😂19 -
I'm taking an Intro to Programming course along aside an Intro to Computers class so I already know about basic programing, still very new to it though! At the end of the Intro to Comp, we're learning about programming and a classmate was having a hard time understanding assignments and variables.
I explained the idea of the input command at least three times and he kept trying to print out a statement he just wanted to write in instead of printing out the input that the user will enter. He also assigned the same name to different variables.
Explained that what he was doing was not versatile and not useful, explained in an example situation, explained by writing some lines of code myself (THRICE), and he still had trouble understanding me. I didn't want to hold his hand the entire time.
Glad that I was called to leave early since I might get too frustrated if I had to stay back and continue to help him.
Hope he managed to finish the assignments successfully though! Feel kinda bad now...2 -
My best friend's ex is really cool. But while they were dating, I was a bit frustrated, mainly because he was interested in many things she wasn't.
One thing that annoyed me was that his major is computer science, and her major is medical research.
GIRL, IF ONLY YOU WERE ALSO MAJORING IN COMPUTERS. YOU CAN ASK THE GUY FOR HELP WITH YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. EXPLOIT HIIIIM. HAVE COFFEE DATES AT STARBUCKS AND CODE TOGETHEEER. HIT TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE7 -
Hm. in MySQL 8.0.23 (yeah I'm kinda slow at catching up) they changed quite a lot.
- Hash Join implementation
- invisible columns
- InnoDB behaviour, eg AHI / IB

Guess no more MySQL for me.
How should I trust a database whose QA seems completely non existent and where minor version releases change the complete behaviour of the database....
(it's not new per se, Oracle announced that with the 8 GA release minor releases can have new features, but I'm surprised they really keep it up with breaking... Their QA sucked before, but with the new features coming, MySQL / Oracle is dead to me. )
Will be interesting to see in which direction Maria DB goes.... So far it looks good, although they really should think about cutting ties with Oracle / MySQL as a lot of internals have quite diverted....
Fuck Oracle.20 -

There are many people broadcasting over Zello from Puerto Rico on the 'Puerto Rico' and other channels. Might help if you need to connect or need situational awareness.
Thoughts with our friends in Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands...
Stay safe. -
A big fuck you to Maria Ruiz. He/She wants PewDiePie removed from YT because the New Zealand shooter said subscribe to him and other stupid reasons which Pewds has clarified as satirical.
And the 68k+ brainless entities who signed the petition as well on change.org5 -
when you really wanna write an extension for this software but the only API is in node. gotta rewrite it for Ruby! 😓10

Gah, I just received this Ubuntu 18.04 VM with 8 cores and 8 gigs of ram, and since it'll be a production server both serving public and "private" networks (yes, shout at me, but projects won't be about hosting sensitive information, I wouldn't put all that on one server), and I'm struggling between my options.
Docker, or not docker?
The server's main use is to host our growing blog and install Varnish, which will hog some ram after a while. I use Laradock for my dev projets, it's really easy to develop with it, but I am unsure if it fits a production environment with performance, security and traffic load in mind :(
I read Docker has stability issues (in 2016-2017), and can bring the machine down with it, I don't know if I should just install the software (nginx, apache, percona/mysql/maria) without "containerizing" it and go for it
I'm lost xD7 -
Why in the fuck does everyone expose specific ports in Dockerfiles?
If I wanted to expose the port, I would fucking expose it.
Currently can't run my home infra platform because I'm running two separate instances of Maria DB on the same private internal network. These are two databases for two separate applications.
Why don't I run them on one? Because they're two separate fucking applications.
Why the fuck can I not do this when I used to be able to do it a week ago.
Stop exposing your fucking ports in your fucking Dockerfiles.
This shit is getting so bad, I'm just about to throw my towel in on all fucking containers and just install everything in multiple VM environments.
I am God damn appalled that after 8 years of using docker, core concepts like a port exposure is being leveraged as a way to somehow circumvent poor security practices.
You want a secure container environment? Expose your own goddamn ports.
Fuck you Maria DB, and fuck you docker.2
