My (unhealthy) obsession with the (if?then:else) shorthand syntax.

I just had to explain to someone why Java isn't a suitable shorthand to JavaScript. Then he told me not to lecture him, because he's a CS graduate. Seriously.

so, I am trying to get a csv opened and read, and then search through it based on values. Easy peasy lemon squeezy in python, right?

Well, damned be java. You need a buffered reader to read the file. Then you have to "while(has next)" the whole damn thing, then you have to do something with the data that you read one by one, right? Well, not to be disappointed, they do have json libraries, but you **have to install** the plugins for it. Aka you have to manually add the libraries or use some backwards manager like maven.

Gotta admit, jdbc is neat if you're anal about your sql statements, but bring the same jazz to csv, and all the hell will break loose.

Now, if you just read your json data into multiple objects and throw them in an array... Kiss shorthand search's ass goodbye, because this mofo can't search through lists without licking the arse of every object. And now, you have to find another way because this way, you can't group shit you just read from csv. (or, I haven't found a way after 5 hours of dealing with the godforsaken shitshow that java libraries are.)

Like, I'm devastated. If this rant doesn't make much sense to you, blame some java library for it.

I've started programming when I was 12. Right now I'm 25. I can clearly say that I'm passionate, I've touched I think almost every "type" of programming ever. From game development, through IoT and finished at eCommerce. I never stop learning.

My workmates are pissing me off. For code review sometimes I'm waiting even 3 days when I've changed like 5-6 files. They don't want to introduce "new" technologies (by new I mean who are existing at least 2-3 years, got stable community). They don't want to refactor some core of the application because it's working - they don't care about it as they can later say "legacy system so this basic feature took me a week".

Code quality means for them "use shorthand syntax, this code is ugly" - the basic shit which can do any linter

When I'm doing code review, I'm checking out to this branch, test it, check if the solution is scalable. Then I make my comments. I just hear "stop bitching about it just approve".

Thank God I've made through interview and I'm going to switch job in next week.

I don't really get it why my co-male dev does not like ternary operator as a shorthand operator for if/else statements.

What’s your preference for a simple if without shorthand:

if ($variable == ‘test’) echo ‘’hello’;

if ($variable == ‘test’) { echo ‘’hello’; }

if ($variable == ‘test’) {
echo ‘’hello’;
}

i think ai assistants would be much more interesting / less annoying if it had a faster, snappier syntax to talk through. Like shorthand code but in the sense of talking and just getting one word responses.

Working a a GIS company, which just makes this so much worse:
Had to do conversion of wind direction degrees to shorthand symbols (N, SE, etc). Everything ends up rotated by 90 degrees, and the project manager craps on the dude that wrote the API I get the degrees from. He claims innocence, so I get it next.

Turns out, I used the Cartesian system (where 0 starts on the right) instead of the cardinal directions (where 0, North, is at the top).

Yeah, still haven’t lived that one down...

My colleagues want to forbid the usage of the shorthand constructor in TypeScript.

I feel strongly about this.

At least they find it annoying that I call the more verbose one "PHP-style constructor" :D

Spent two hours looking all over my code with so many debuggers I was about to crap and BOOM found you can't use "dec" for a table or string name in PHP. Just typing December would have saved me hours. Not sure why but put ticks around it and everything was fine. I put this one on htmltypos.com so others can figure it out. May be `dec` is shorthand for dechex....?

So I've basically made an flux store using Rxjs. Using symbol's as tagret data and an action. I asked my boss and another work colleague to do code review on the new system as I'm not sure their like it or understand what i was doing.

Passed fined.

2 weeks later i get a comment in some code that implement in basically asking whats all this and what is it doing.

Just replaced a mess of a 6 row, 6 column grid done using bootstrap with 4 lines of CSS3 grid layout (shorthand).

Why do we even need full Bootstrap when ya got Grid and flexbox now? Oh right, .btn colours... 😖😫😭

What are resources if you have to quickly gain overview on a subject? i.e: Need overview of the use of "primary key" in SQL, without passing through explanation in a book.
