There is a commercially sold ERP solution that has it's DB schema in excel and Other documentations in MS Word. And its not even properly structured, no schema diagrams, last updated for a 4 year old major release 😒😫.
I have to develop a custom module for it and that requires building an ActivexDLL Project in VB fucking 6 😭😭 .
Tell me if you want ss in comments.5
Manager asked if I want to reconsider my resignation while reiterating that they cannot match the other company's offer.
Idk what the hell makes them think they can bargain without anything to bargain with in the first place.14
I once worked until 8am to get a demo ready for a client of the client. I knew the client was a bit thick, so I made some comprehensive video demos and sent them over to him, to save him trying to demo it himself. I wake up at 11am with him screaming down the phone at me:
“It doesn’t work, none of it works!”
“What do you mean?”
“I go to login and I can’t enter anything.”
“I haven’t sent you anything to log into...wait, are you trying to log into a video? Tell me you’re not trying to log into a video of a login page.”
“Uh...oh hang on, it just worked. Ok no pr-“
“No wait, what do you mean it worked?”
“I logged in fine.”
“It’s a video. You can’t log into a video.”
“Uh...alright, bye mate, thanks!”
The moral of the story is: never assume any level of intelligence on the part of a client, even if they exhibit signs of it at first. If they are paying you they will forget how to tie their own shoelaces.10
It's 3:30AM and I'm working.
If you work at night, no one can interrupt you.
If you sleep during the day, you can't attend any zoom meetings.
Also, at night you can work naked, and drink on the job without any judgement.
All problems solved.10
*has a great company name idea*
*tries to register domain*
*looks at whois*
*i already own it*
i don’t know how to feel11
Story of my life when I am really interested in a company:
Company: let's have a call to get to know each other.
Company during the call: takes a technical interview
Company *a few days later*: now let's have a technical call!
Company during call: asks to design GOOGLE in GOOGLE DOC (??!!?!)
Company *a few days later*: now let's have a Development Test!
Company *sends an email* asking to complete a task which should take a week to develop in a few hours
Company *a few weeks later*: Sends a generic email saying they got another person who is a better fit.
Damn, how have I only just discovered localstack?
The ability to spin up and use SQS queues, S3 buckets, lambdas, Kinesis streams etc. for development without worrying about bankrupting myself if I screw something up is really quite liberating.4
Today I discovered by myself that...
...in a shell...
...when entering a password (e.g. ssh)...
...and you make a typo... 🤦♂️
...you don't need to smack that backspace key like a maniac! You can just use the clear line shortcut: control+U (^U). This clears all input to the left of your cursor and this also works for passwords.26
That moment when you were finally able to make a plugin after 36 hours of frustration for a software with absolute shit docs and not many resources thanks partly to a small article (written in german which you had to translate) that you found lurking in the corner of web. 😌2
How long do you guys stay at a job before switching? Whether due to pay reasons/lack of interest/etc?14
*In a team meeting*
Me: *happily jotting down notes in markdown*
Other guy: "Dude what are you doing? Pay attention."
Me: "Umm... I'm taking notes?"
Other guy: "But why does your MS Word have black background?"
Me (a bit lost): "Umm... That's not Word. That's my text editor."
Other guy: "Alright... But how do you convert your notes into Word then?"
Me: "... I don't."
Other guy: *stares at me*
Me: * stare back*
It was a nice conversation.17
Coworker: I'm trying to classify data based on X
Me: Mhh. Seems like a hard task, we don't have data to figure out X
Coworker: I know! That's why I thought about using machine learning!
Me: (Oh, boy)
Coworker: I'm working on training this ML model that will be able to classify based on X
Me: and what are the inputs for your training?
Coworker: The data classified based on X
Me: And where did you get that from?
Coworker: I don't have it! That will be the output of my ML model!
Me: But you just said that was the input!
Me: Don't you see a contradiction here?
Coworker: Yes, it's a pretty complicated problem, that's why I'm stuck. Can you help me with that?
Me: (Looking at my watch) Sorry I'm late for a meeting. Catch up later, bye!15
Freelancer.com is under heavy spam attack for a couple of hours now, I guess the devs are sleeping.10
Alright, so I am going to start doing dev streams
I am going to stream with @ewpratten at some point tonight. Were gonna be working on robot code and my personal website. I have literally 0 reputation on Twitch so if this doesn't work out I can't really loose. If y'all wanna stop by and give us some stuff to converse about, cool articles or extreme politics and our belief systems go ahead.7
