So i just saw a post about not pushing to production on Friday's and that reminded me of something.
A team we are working with (we needed help on something so we got another company to send us a team and do it for us) recently push to production on a Friday at around 5pm.
We didn't know that they had done it until a shit ton of errors started happening and we had no idea why (it was working so far, none of us did anything, so what the fuck is going on).
To make things better, one of my colleagues tried calling them and they wouldn't answer the phone. They knew what they did, so they went home before we could notice it and we had to correct their mistake.
We had everyone calling us saying they had gotten an error, and they needed to get home but couldn't because of it (it messed up a process that only happens at the end of the day before people go home. I can explain more in the comments if anyone is confused, or just wants to know).
Eventually everything was solved, but that was a very stressful ending of the week.
So yeah, don't deploy on Friday's please and thank you7
I kind of wish there was an option for a small brown dog for my avatar.
My dog is a small brown mutt (I think that's the word? She doesn't have a breed) and right now there's no dog that looks like her 😭6
Does anyone know how to solve the 'Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token <' error? It's on the first line <!DOCTYPE html>, I've even tried deleting that line, but got the same error on <html>.
I've been looking for answers for a while now, and nothing works for me! I know as soon as I post this, I'll get the answer immediately tho.
All the other pages work fine, with no errors and no warnings, all the js/css/whatever files are called in the same file which is shared by all the pages (app.blade.php).
The only 404 errors I'm getting are from the images, but I've tried deleting the img paths and still get the same error. I'm also getting 404 on the images on app.blade.php but those are working fine on the other pages, so I don't think that's it.
The controller was basically copy/paste from another project. I've tried dd($product) and looks fine.
Long story, short: everything looks fine and I'm going crazy. Anyone know what it could be?12
I used to love facebook, used it everyday, until all the older people started invading it and made it cringy.
Now I hate it for the obvious reasons.
The only reasons why I don't delete the account is because of family and because I'm a nostalgic piece of shit and can't let go of all those memories I have there.13
It's going to be different for everyone, but for me would be:
- More schedule freedom. I hate being forced to stay here from 9am to 6pm. What if today I want to get here at 11am, and only leave at 8pm? I'm still working the full 8 hours, so what's the problem?
- Actually work with what I want and enjoy doing.
To be honest, that would be all for me. This is all (I think) I need to be happy while working.4
One of my tasks for today was to change one (ONE! I REPEAT, ONE!!) field in over 2100 clients. SAP has a transation that changes anything you want in mass, all I had to do was select the clients I wanted to change and the new field value. This transation has been running since 2pm, it's almost 6pm and it's only halfway through.
Tomorrow is a national holiday and I wanted to focus on my personal project, but I bet I'll have to do this again tomorrow, because there's no way in hell I'm staying here for 4 more hours to get this done today, and 4/5 hours when I get home is not enough!
So yeah, fuck SAP for taking so long, and fuck whoever didn't notice sooner that we had to change this.4
Does anyone, that works/has worked with laravel know how to give id a minimum length?
For example, instead of 1 I would want 000001, 10 would be 000010, and so on.
I know uuid does something similar, but it's not exactly what I want. Also, I had a bad experience with uuid, where I wanted to delete the field but it would still show up every time I migrated 🙃 but it wasn't it the migration file 🙃 so now I try to avoid using it 🙃4
Someone in the company wants to make one (database) field multiple choice. HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THIS18
Well, I've started programming only a few years ago, and haven't done a lot of projects.
I guess the best thins I learned was I preffer to do projects alone. Everytime I try to do a project with someone, one of two scenarios happen:
- We each do a part of the project, and only talk at the end. Normally everything works out fine.
- We can't agree on anything and, in the end, nothing ever works.
I think I only enjoyed doing a project with one person. We were learning vue.js, but I was staying behind and the guy I was with was okay at it. He would do most things, while i was watching him and he would explained what he was doing and why. Then I started doing stuff (very easy things) while he was watching me and guiding me. Telling me if there was a better way of doing something, or even if I made a typo. Basically, I would do something and he would tell me if it was wrong. We ended up making a (very) simplified imdb from scratch in, I think, 8 hours? Took us longer to choose the template then to make the actual project. Yes, he made most of the project, but I think I have an excuse on this one. I did end up learning a lot, I wouldn't pass that module if it wasn't for him.
Other then that one, I never had any good experience in a group. I would rather make everything alone, no one to disagree or fight with.2
TLDR: SAP sucks. Don't ever work with it. Run away from it. Delete it from your memory. If your company works with it, quit. It's the best you can do.
A couple of weeks ago the group rant was "Story of your best/worst career choice" and I talked about the contract I signed. Even tho that is still true and I still feel like that, I think I got a new worst choice:
WORKING WITH SAP.
When I got this job I knew it would be SAP, but I didn't know what SAP was. I just thought "it's programming, how bad can it be?" OH BOII.
If only I would have done some FUCKING RESEARCH I would know this would be a mistake!!
And I knew I didn't want to work with this, I knew I wanted to be a web developer, but I STILL ACCEPTED THE JOB OH MAN WHAT WAS I THINKING I'M SO MAD.
Were I live we all have the same mentality when looking for the first job, which is to just accept anything you can get, because it's your first job, you need to work and to get experience, even if it's a bad job or if you know you won't like it. When my intership was ending, I told my parents I didn't want to stay there because they treat their employes like shit, and the salary is terrible. They told me to still accept it if they offered because I still need a job (this one was web tho) and experience.
So, of course, since I was looking for my first job, was told this my entire live, always thought like that and they were the first to contact me, I accepted it.
BIGGEST FUCKING MISTAKE!! DON'T THINK LIKE THIS!! AND STOP TELLING KIDS THIS!! IT'S NOT A GOOD MENTALITY!!!
ALSO DON'T WORK WITH SAP! EVER!22
(This is the third time I'm talking about the same question I posted on stack overflow this week, but things keep happening that pisses me off)
Me: *answers my own question, clearly says I tried deleting the php path environment variable and that it didn't work, so that's why I added it back and now it's working perfectly*
Guy: *downvotes my answer* "you need to delete the php path environment variable, here's how"
M: "I did and it didn't work, that's why I added it back and now it's working"
G: "well, you need to delete the php path environment variable"
G: "You need to check for all the references"
WERE? You literally only talked about environment variables, I told you I checked those multiple times. Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, if I did I wouldn't be asking such a stupid question like this one, so maybe a little guidance? I mean, isn't that what stack overflow is for? To guide people who don't know how to do something? Don't just say "your wrong" when I said MULTIPLE TIMES I did what you said and it DIDN'T WORK.
Seriously, asking a question there was the worst thing I did 😑
Anyway, he didn't answer back and everything is still working fine, with the php path.1
Portugal in August: heatwave coming from Africa
Portugal in October: polar wind coming from Iceland5
>Answered my first question on SO
>Comment: "It's a wrong answer"
>Me: "Do you mind telling me why, so i can fix it? It could still help the op"
I see. You were quick to tell me I was wrong, but don't tell me why. Alright then.8
On Friday I talked about a program that I copied and pasted into my own, and when I was testing it, it didn't work like the original.
If I kept it as the original, it wouldn't even move. If I tried to change it (taking the queries out of the loop. I know I know, I didn't make the original), it would give me a dump saying I was out of space.
So, my solution: delete some records as I go.
Can't wait to see the problems I'm about to have with this 🙃
Today, or wednesday (can't do anything tomorrow, family is coming over) I'm going to start writing documentation for my project.
Problem: Never wrote documentation before.
I only have the database done (still need to write the migrations and seed, but the structure is done). How do I even write documentation for a bunch of tables? I guess I'll learn that this week.
Wish me luck, I'll need it!!
Hopefully, simpler sintax.
And better documentation for every language/framework. Especially for the devs who are just starting, don't write documentation assuming everyone has been working with your framework for years!
That last one was more a rant than answering the actual question, but I needed to say it. It's been on my mind for a while 😑2
I just asked my frist question on stack overflow and I'm nervous af about the reactions I'm gonna get 😂
Let's see if it even gets any answers, wish me luck20
I forget things really easily. Don't believe me?
I started reading a rant and thought
"wow, so interesting, and this is what is happening to me!"
Then realised it was my rant I had just posted.5
I just copied the exact same code from another program into mine, actually left out a loop because I didn't need it. Also took some other stuff out, nothing much, just some var = othervar that I didn't need.
The other program, from where I copied the code, works fine, is fast, I see no issue, has been in production for a while now and no complaints. Mine, WITH THE SAME CODE, doesn't move. I don't understand how this is possible.21
Alright, I'm gonna need some help from more experienced devs.
tldr: how does my sister test my website if she can't run it?
I'm making a site (for myself, I've talked about this in other rants, most likely won't go online so I don't want to spend money on this), and my sister is helping me with the sales part of the project. It's basicaly a web store.
In a couple of months, she is going to have a baby, and will stay at home for 5 months. Since she helped me with it, and I don't really know all of the steps that go into online purchasing (she kind of works with this, and makes a lot of online purchases, from everyone I know she was the best person to go to), we want her to test it while she's at home with the baby, just in case I missed or didn't understand something.
The problem is: she doesn't understant anything about programing and probably never seen a command line, and since this is laravel, I will need to install a lot of things in her computer, which will be useless for her after she is done, and teach her some commands to run the site.
Also, like I said, i don't want to spend money on this, since she will only make a few tests and that's it, it would go offline after.
She is smart, she could probably do this, so if there is no way of doing this is ok, but if there is it would save her a lot of time while testing and with the baby, and save me my time at work.
I would want something like git, but where I could run the site without a lot of steps.
Does anyone know how she can test it? Is there even a way?
Thank you in advance 😁6
I've been trying to find templates for the project I'm doing for a while now, and I just found a bunch of them I really really like, and it fits the theme I have perfectly!
But I can't find the download template link, instead it just redirects to their website, which is a "build a website without coding" type of app.
So my co-worker loves to tell us to comment our code, for obvious reasons.
But now I'm debugging his code, and guess what.
Okay, maybe two comments in two different queries, but they were not that helpfull.
So now I have to debug his code, and I have no idea what I'm even supposed to look for!10
I'm too lazy to learn git, every time I try to push something, I always get an error that I can't solve.
So instead I email all my projects to myself, save them in a pen or Google Drive.24
Yeasterday I was making some changes in my database in sqldbm and I guess I forgot to change something, so when I logged in it was I an unsaved draft and if I would like to load it. Obviously I said yes!
Now I see every change I made yesterday is gone! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK1
So yesterday I had to do some windows updates.
Today, I turn my laptop back on and notice I don't have sound.
Alright, I'll just see if I have some outdated drivers. Oh, I have 3, and one it's the sound driver! Cool, let me just update that. What do you mean I can't? Alright, let me try this app I have installed to see if it can update everything for me. It did, great!
Oh, but now the sound is coming from my earphones AND the speaker... Let me check the app again. Nothing. Let me check the drivers again. Detection verification is outdated. Alright, I'll just update that one, no big deal. Windows could not find drivers? Alright, let's see if windows update can find something! Nothing.
Okay, let's check sound definitions. What about troubleshooting? Still nothing?
Well, now I'm pissed. Let's see what the internet thinks I should do. Almost one hour later, I've tried everything I can think of and still can't fix this. Fml8
