I wonder when there will be the first manufacturer to introduce the "cool" new notch design to normal screens. 🤔27

BETA USER: Is this feature working? When I add a link I get an error that says "URL cannot be more than 255 characters."
ME (biting my tongue): Hi ****, Yes it works. The link you're trying to add is too long. Please try a shorter URL.
BETA USER: Oh, it should tell you that!
😳🤪🤬11 -
So our genius client just posted a photo of our office whiteboard on Facebook with the beta site credentials on it... 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️5

Someone: how do I convert cute girls to .gf format ?
Me : Sorry, this feature is not available in the beta version7 -
The new version of the (unofficial) client for Windows 10 mobile is now available! 😁
devRant unofficial (previously devFeed) has been updated to v1.0.0.0 and came out of beta! Over 40 changes since v0.9.10.0 beta.
For those who think that no one uses Windows 10 mobile, the latest version has been downloaded 460+ times! 😉34 -
My biggest pet peeve at the moment is people without any development experience using version numbers.
Me: "Communicating a release date for the feature towards clients is dangerous, we have a developer shortage, and currently don't really have enough capacity to..."
Manager: "What we release next month doesn't have to be perfect, it is just a v1"
Me: "You mean it's a beta? If that's the case, could you maybe differentiate the requirements of the beta, let's call it a 0.1.0, versus the 1.0.0-rc, the release candidate?"
*Feature is eventually merged into production, barely in a beta state*
Manager: "So I have some ideas for the v2"
Me: "You mean 1.0.0"
Manager: "Let's compromise and call it v1.5"
Me: "Let's compromise, you stop communicating release dates, AND you stop using version numbers..."
Manager: "That's not a compromise..."
Me: "...I wasn't finished... And I won't respond to the recruiter who just offered me a better paying job"5 -
So according to some reddit user IKEA sends your password as a GET parameter in plain text.

A group of ten top software engineers is sent to a class for aspiring managers. The teacher walks in and asks this question:"You work for a software company which develops avionics (software that controls the instruments of an airplane). One day you are taking a business trip. As you get on the plane you see a plaque that says this plane is using a beta of the software your team developed. Who would get off?"Nine developers raised their hands. The teacher looked at the tenth and asked, "Why would you stay on?"The tenth said, "if my team wrote the software, the plane would not get off the ground, much less crash."

The coolest project I've worked on was for a certain country's Navy. The project itself was cool and I'll talk about it below but first, even cooler than the project was the place were I worked on it.
I would go to this island off the coast where the navy had its armoury. Then to get into the armoury I'd go through this huge tunnel excavated in solid rock.
Finally, once inside I would have to go thru the thickest metal doors you've ever seen to get to crypto room, which was a tiny room with a bunch of really old men - cryptographers - scribbling math formulae all day long.
I can't give a lot of technical details on the project for security reasons but basically it was a bootable CD with a custom Linux distro on it. Upon booting up the system would connect to the Internet looking for other nodes (other systems booted with that CD). The systems would find each other and essentially create an ad-hoc "dark net".
The scenario was that some foreign force would have occupied the country and either destroyed or taken control of the Navy systems. In this case, some key people would boot these CDs in some PC somewhere not under foreign control (and off the navy grounds.) This would supposedly allow them to establish secure communications between surviving officers. There is a lot more to it but that's a good harmless outline.
As a bonus, I got to tour an active aircraft carrier :)8 -

// devRant unofficial UWP update
//
Hi to all Windows 10 users of my app (if you're not, it's never too late to improve yourself).
I really appreciate all your feedbacks on Microsoft Store and via email!
Thanks!
I'm working really hard on v2 to release it as soon as possible.
Since I'm alone and I have a lot of other commitments (university, sleeping, holidays), I would like to release a closed BETA for all users who want to test the new version and send feedbacks, bugs reports.
All you need to do to join the BETA is filling this form (https://jakubsteplowski.com/en/...) by September 15th.
I'm planning to release 3 BETA builds (this could change):
- v2 BETA 1: September
- v2 BETA 2: October
- v2 BETA 3: November
- v2 Stable: November/December
During the BETA phase you will receive the BETA builds as normal updates from the Microsoft Store, after the BETA you will start to receive the stable builds as all users.
Of course you can resign to be a BETA tester at anytime by contacting me.
Anyone who will join the BETA will be added to the "Special thanks" section in about.
Thanks in advance for your help! 😊53 -
Other Dev left just as we hit beta and refactored all his code without documentation... Not even fucking comments...10

Hey everyone :D
I've been working on an medieval fantasy MMORPG called The Immortal Rift with a small team of developers from all around the world and we plan to start a closed beta before going on Early Access on Steam next month.
So I finished the pre-registration page a few days ago and I'd like to invite any of you that have some time to try it out :D
https://theimmortalrift.com
https://theimmortalrift.com/closed_...
It would be nice to hear some of your feedback on it and I would be glad to see you in the beta too :)
Thanks for your time :)
PS. If you decide to come and give it a try, you can see me around with the name Necrogizer :)33 -
A friend found this Microsoft link a few weeks ago. The background image is missing because it's been removed from imgur and it's still broken to date 🤔

No more dealing with shit architecture and experimental beta technologies being used in production which went down constantly 😎
Back to good ol' product development! 🤩
One month notice period to go3 -
Does anyone else think the top menu bar on applications is way too big on ubuntu 18.04? Also, am I the only one who has a lot of ransom freezes in the os? I know its a beta version, but c'mon!17

First rule of Apple beta software: do not talk about Apple beta software.
It doesn’t matter, that there’s PUBLIC beta. You cannot talk about it, cause you violate some idiotic NDA. And then, we get software that looks and works like everyone sees now.
Eat shit, Apple. And all of your fanboys.3 -
Years ago, I was part of a project that went completely off the rails. A little context: we were a services company and we had local offices in cities all over the country. My team provided 2nd-level support which means we often had the PMs call us from those via an annoying Nextel radio.
I won’t go through the details but suffice it to say this project envolved one such branch going rogue and committing actual fraud, with criminal proceedings and all. People were on the edge, and the relationship with that branch was increasingly hostile. There was also an internal power struggle in the company between some directors at that point. In other words, a clusterfuck I’ll always cherish, if by cherish you mean hate hate hate. Anywho…
One time, there was a national holiday on a Thursday and we were going to make it a long weekend. As customary, I communicated with all the PMs about contigency plans. This PM then told us that we could not take Friday off because the customer wanted us to fly over there. We were supposed to be at the customer’s site early Friday morning. That meant we would have to fly Thrusday afternoon. I wasn’t happy.
It immediatly felt arbitrary too. As I said, the relationship was not good and we suspected he was just trying to cost us our days off. I knew enough of the customer to be fairly sure they would not have requested us that Friday. Why did the customer want us then? There was nothing yet on production and if it was just to show progress, surely we could move it to Monday. At worst, can’t we make it over the phone? No, no, no, he said. The customer was adamant that we be there on Friday. Sucked to be us.
So we flew over Thursday afternoon and on Friday morning we headed to the customer’s offices only to find it closed. They too had made it a long weekend and wouldn’t be back until Monday.
Normally I would be furious over the waste of time but to be honest, both I and my colleague smiled at that. It confirmed that the PM just tried to screw us and the customer have never asked for us. We headed back to the local office.
Before coming in, we both bought ourselves some icecream. My friend stayed in the little garden in front and I went in. The PM immediatly saw me and demanded to know why I wasn’t at the customer yet. I didn’t answer. Instead I grabbed the Nextel radio and headed back out with the PM following. I then sat down on the grass and called my director. Smiling and staring at the PM, I told him about the office being closed. The PM’s face froze when my director asked to talk to him.
We sat outside under the sun, enjoying our icecreams while the PM got shouted at. It was the best icecream I’ve ever had.6 -
Worst part of being a dev?
The last 10% of a project.
Being in beta, gathering feed back, sorting through opinions and user preferences. All that takes forever compared to the first 90%.
📈🗓❗️❗️❗️2 -
I just thought this would be a good place to find beta testers. Mainly because the developer is prone to get bored and if they encounter a bug they will be a lot more helpful than "its not working"

I hate when I'm being questioned when I wander off to the kitchen to get a sandwich for 5 minutes when the smokers at the office have their sixth smoking break that usually takes about 10 minutes.

That moment when a user tells you that your app has zero value...I have ~30 beta users and everyone I've heard from loves it except the one.
But the one is still nagging at me.8 -
Two friends and I are about to publish a side project in two weeks (for an open Beta) it feels good but I am kind of nervous...
Today I found new bugs and I don't know yet if we have the time to fix them all...
Do you have any tips / experience you could share with me?13 -

I scribbled this guy attached here as an idea, but as others have brought up, we could also have a super duck (like the devRant cape duck but more special)!9 -

So I have to work with this company at work, they claim to be super professional and they have some API stuff that a customer of us is dependant of.
Their API is a huge pile of bullshit and a big mixture of German / English terms and stuff, it's a mess to work with it.
Look at (the source code of) their website to see what I mean:

Got a new iPhone X. Had to set up as a new phone because my old one had beta software on it and wouldn’t let me restore from backup (yes, I know I could download the new iOS beta on the X then reset and store from backup but I was in a hurry) but in doing so it gave me the chance to rearrange my home screen and devRant made it on the first page!8

When you're trying to publish your first Cordova app and the PlayStore release including signatures and stuff takes you 2.5 hours, while the AppStore release takes you 5 days (including getting a huge Mac on your desk, signing up a D.U.N.S. for your company, figuring out the signing/provisioning process and fixing CSS/JS exclusively for iOS).4

Any of you guys using those features?
How do you handle your ToDos/tasks?3 -
I don't get much spam, but when I do, I rant about how badly those mails are crafted.
I mean, yeah, for non-devs or typical old people, those badly made Google fake mails (that use the old Google logo, the logo in Times New Roman or something) or ISP / phone company mails with malicious attachments may look good enough.
But, seriously, if I were a dev paid to create spam mails, they would look like the real deal, if I may say so myself, as I would actually put some effort in them.
What do you think? Wouldn't spam made by real developers like us be "better"?
Maybe send some examples from inside your junk box 🤔3 -

You don't say -

step 2) opens dev tool/app's website *ooh nice landing page*

A project I've been a part of for two years finally exited beta this morning! It was so exciting watching it grow and and change into what it is today. The project in question is Storj.io. A decentralized cloud storage. When I first joined the project, literally all it did was create junk files to take up space. Now it is a thriving network storinf over a petabyte of data without the possibility of it ever going offline.8

NodeJS 10.0.0 is out.
The biggest features I see is the release of N-API. I always wanted to use that but never did as it was in beta. It will be exiciting to use it with a new project!5 -
When you're pulling your hair out trying to debug a problem a user's been having on a beta site and you realize they're on the wrong site 🤦♂️ 😭💥🔫

Sometimes I wonder how software development in (bigger) teams worked in the 90s.
Take the first Pokémon games for example. It was the mid-90s and the final product would be Assembler code that goes onto a cartridge with limited space.
I believe version control systems didn't really exist back then (Git & Mercurial: 2005, SVN: 2004). So probably people took backups of the chunks of code they worked on, copied around a stitched-together code, threw everything together at the end of the day, etc. etc. ...
Does anyone here know if there is some kind of documentary about that topic or did anyone here experience that first-hand?
It would be really interesting to see how that stuff worked back then 😊4 -
One day before beta is the wrong time to tell me you refactored the entire licensing module - and have zero test cases for it.2

Got my first live 0.68$ application fee from stripe from my bootstrapped startup beta webapp I've coded myself2

I was experimenting with a load test suite called 'Siege' to build and scale increasingly complex searches against our new site search engine. I assumed that an old iMac couldn't have generated a crushing load against the beta servers and I learned two things the day I wrote and started that script before heading to lunch:
1) Beta and Production shared MSSQL instances
2) That single iMac was more than enough to take the whole production site down... -
Every website we craft at work has some email substitution logic so that addresses you see on the site don't actually exist in the HTML source like that (you wouldn't find them in a format like "foo@example.com").
Instead the @ and the period right before the TLD get replaced with something else (to prevent (dumb) spam bots from using that address and blast it with junk).
Some people replaced them with images in the past (ew), replaced the @ with "(at)" or other stuff.
I made it a habit to render the @ and . by replacing them with span tags which then get a ::before in CSS that contains "content: '@';", so that the @ is visible but is not actually inside the HTML source code.
The classes for these spans then have a random name (persistent for that website though). The first one was called "move-along-nothing-to-see-here", but then I started naming them after Star Wars quotes.
One website's @ class is called "that-s-no-moon" (Obi Wan), others are called "i-have-a-bad-feeling-about-this" (Han Solo), "powerful-you-have-become-the-dark-side-I-sense-in-you." (Yoda) and "these-are-not-the-droids-you-are-looking-for" (Obi Wan).12 -

In june 2018 I am going to get my software developer diploma! I am very excited about it. But for now the workload is just getting higher and higher.
Therefore I think I am going to be less active on here for a while.
But before that I would like to introduce you to a new app two colleagues and I wrote to help students in similar situations.

PS It's completely open source just search for outcobra on github. Feel free to open up as many issues as you like2 -
Argh! (I feel like I start a fair amount of my rants with a shout of fustration)
Tl;Dr How long do we need to wait for a new version of xorg!?
I've recently discovered that Nvidia driver 435.17 (for Linux of course) supports PRIME GPU offloading, which -for the unfamiliar- is where you're able render only specific things on a laptops discreet GPU (vs. all or nothing). This makes it significantly easier (and power efficient) to use the GPU in practice.
There used to be something called bumblebee (which was actually more power efficient), but it became so slow that one could actually get better performance out of Intel's integrated GPU than that of the Nvidia GPU.
This feature is also already included in the nouveau graphics driver, but (at least to my understanding) it doesn't have very good (or none) support for Turing GPUs, so here I am.
Now, being very excited for this feature, I wanted to use it. I have Arch, so I installed the nvidia-beta drivers, and compiled xorg-server from master, because there are certain commits that are necessary to make use of this feature.
But after following the Nvidia instructions, it doesn't work. Oops I realize, xrog probably didn't pick up the Nvidia card, let's restart xorg. and boom! Xorg doesn't boot, because obviously the modesetting driver isn't meant for the Nvidia card it's meant for the Intel one, but xorg is to stupid for that...
So here I am back to using optimus-manager and the ordinary versions of Nvidia and xorg because of some crap...
If you have some (good idea) of what to do to make it work, I'm welcome to hear it.6 -
I still remember the moment when I found out that there's something other than Internet Explorer ("The Internet program" back then for me), named Firefox (v2.7).
It was simple stuff like tabs that fascinated me, it's an experience similar to learning a second language and opening up your mind and understand the abstract idea of everything.1 -

"Gmail was launched as an invitation-only beta release on April 1, 2004 and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007, though still with beta status."

Hey, up for a challenge?
Upgrade to iOS 12 beta 2,
When all of your apps fail to open and u can only use apple safari, notes & other apple apps, start regretting the decision and downgrade your phone to iOS 11.4 when your phone starts up in data recovery mode and fails to recover data and then u need to send mom a sms of that picture of your family and explain the reason for why all of your data got deleted send me a picture so I can see how I did😤...
I deleted my jailbreak for this shit?!
(I understand it's a beta, but cmon on beta 1 haw of my apps didin't work, and on beta 2 I needed to restart my phone for 6 times before apps might start working and u need to wait 2 weeks before another beta releases, fuck off appl. With this beta shit, I guarantee there were thousends of users with same issue fix tht.)2 -

Here is mine.
So I have been working on a project for 2 months now at my company. Briefly, I describe it as the WordPress of the surveys (create, edit, share, tons of features). Last day, I had to implement one last feature in order to make everything working and as similar as possible with the final product. I had 10 minutes to do it (had to go home) and I was like "Tomorrow bro". Believe it or not, 10 minutes was what it took me to end this fckin' project, and go home on time like "Good job Man, relax it's friday now" :)
Thanks for reading ! -

I casually solved a problem in some private code at work today that I didn't manage to fix the previous two evenings.
Then I forget to push the changes and remembered at home that I turned off my work computer which normally I never turn off so that I could TeamViewer into it (I don't have VPN

Wanted to work on that code this weekend 😒

Should a developer be enrolled in a beta program on the same machine they develop with? I believe the answer is no simply because I was a part of Apple's Beta program and it gave me a lot of issues when trying to build applications or set up environments due to obvious compatibility issues. What do you think?3

So I just released a thing I've been working on for the past few days and I'm very glad that it's finally public!
It's a thing that you can use on your website to let the user choose which cookie they want to allow.
https://github.com/metaa/cookiebox
It's worth playing around with the cookie panel in your developer console of your browser on the example page, too!
https://metaa.github.io/cookiebox/
I'd be glad to get some serious feedback and I hope it could be useful to someone out there. 😊 -

We are currently debugging the most ridiculous issue. We have an eForm embedded in a native iOS app, and in the iOS 11 beta, every time we tap a dropdown list it takes 4 taps to dismiss it because it keeps reappearing. The final time it reappears with no data in it. The dropdowns are generated by Safari. We have replaced the Safari native dropdowns with a custom view and now the issue doesn't occur. What the hell Apple? What change did you make to Safari to cause such a random issue in a web view?
-
Cons of using an unmaintained app! :/
[About: This is Nokia's Z Launcher. Its development stopped before it even went out of beta, but it's so good I use it anyway. If interested, you can find it on APKMirror.]7 -
So we have spent the last ~3 weeks creating workarounds for bugs that were found during testing against iOS 11 beta 1.
Today I had to go in and undo all the merges because as of beta 7 Apple have fixed the issues we were seeing.
Weeks of effort wasted that could have been spent upskilling or fixing build issues with an app that will have a release due in the coming weeks and we currently know little about.3 -
I just saw a post about enki, and decided to try it out. Apparently there is a waiting list, but I applied for the beta and got a code less than an hour later. So if you're interested, definitely try that :D

You know it's here. You know it's coming. You wait patiently in hopes you don't have to update. But it will happen. One moment you look away from your phone, the alarm goes off, and now, there's nothing you can still do.
WELCOME TO IOS 10.3 BETA 4 HOPE YOU LIKE THE NEW EMOJIS!!2 -
I’m 100% Mac and I use Coda. by panic. However they are working on a new editor called Nova which is in private beta.
https://panic.com/nova/1 -
So I tried to fix an app today that we made for a client ...
It's a Cordova project that's basically jus a wrapper for a certain section of the client's website that's displayed inside an iframe inside said app (with a bit of additional CSS and such). It's all working fine.
Said section of the website offers two to four different options to choose from, then scrolls down (triggered by JavaScript, window.scrollTop or JQuery's equivalent) to the next selection panel that's dynamically added to the DOM tree, the content's depending on what the user selected before.
The problem is, said scrolling effect inside said iframe does not work inside the iOS version of the app (does, however, when the content of the iframe is viewed (by just visiting the URL) inside Safari), instead, the iframe just scrolls back to top.
So after five and a half hours of depression, anger and rage, also some repetetive cursing towards Apple (just like every time something has to do with their awful products), my boss walks in, looks at me and says:
"I'd be fine with it, if I just had to manually scroll instead".
.........
If it wasn't 5pm already (I usually go home at 6), I would've just left the room / gone home or gotten my salad from the fridge to have something to release my anger on.
Seriously though, what the fuck!? -
Should I be even be testing if no one cares.
I keep asking Devs regarding the functionalities of their system for testing and then, realize it's already on Prod even before I test in beta or enable to test in beta.
Do I exist!!!
Now, for the nth time, I have started to test when things are almost there or already there in Prod.
I should keep myself in adrenaline mode always on from now on.
Need to do something worthy.
The worst way to start a new job.2 -
Sircmpwn's sway wm, an i3 clone for Wayland, I love i3 but I'm also an advocate for the ditching of xorg. (Close to beta)

Is it worth it to upgrade to Android P beta? Using a Pixel 2. Is it stable enough to warrant testing, or should I wait until more updates/releases come along?15

So I've tried to unsubscribe myself from a newsletter for the past two weeks ...
It's a service I used exactly once and apparently I got signed up for their newsletter somehow.
When I got the first mail two weeks ago, I clicked that unsubscribe button in the footer to get to their unsubscribe landingpage and hit that confirmation button.
It said something like "... within 24 hours ..." and I was okay with that, but I kept getting a newsletter / offer / whatever every single day for the following two weeks.
Today I figured out, why the unsubscription seemingly had no effect.
I used a GMail alias for that website, so my address contained a + character.
Apparently they just put that mail address into some unsubscribe link template without urlencoding it, so that + turned into a space and they attempted to unsubscribe some mail address with a space instead of a + ...
Remember kids, always urlencode stuff in URLs! -

Hate when a new feature requested by betatester require to change the datastructure. Those feature that force you to start a refactoring while u still in betatesting. I need to solve 4x4 tic tac toe using alpha beta pruning, I have solved 3x3 tic tac toe using minimax, and it works very well, but in 4x4 minimax takes lot of time as search space is too big, so I am applying alpha beta pruning but I am not getting clear idea, that upto what depth I should go and what evaluation function should I write in order to give perfect game play, heuristic may also lead to false results and not perfect game play, so how do I ensure perfect game play for 4x4 using fast approach?? Any suggestions or approach will help me a lot. Looking forward to get some inputs.4

Hello family,
what do you think about publishing unfinished apps? I dont mean beta versions, but apps where you could implement more features bit by bit. So the main app is fully functional, but you could implement more and more..
So what's your opinion?
thanks fam

Google play console is so fucking confusing, I'm trying to get my app to open beta testing stage, I've completed all the steps and done the full roll out, but the status of the app is still pending publication (3 days), wtf does "Pending publication" means do I need to publish the app for production in order for beta testing release to work, or I have to wait for google to approve the beta release for publish?

I'm digging the new GH notifications UI (beta):
https://github.com/notifications/...
It might not (yet) be available to you.
What's nice is that notifications can now be shown regardless of (un)read state (but you can still only show unread notifs). This means that you can read all notifications and not lose track of everything that you have read. Just mark notifications as 'done' when you're done, but until them just leave them in the list and/or save them for later. The UI is also responsive to the browser window, which is much better than before, because a lot of context and content now is shown! And it is possible to handle issues and PRs from the notification screen itself, which basically adds some additional UI elements to the regular issue/PR screens.
And earlier this week the GH Android app went into beta too: https://play.google.com/apps/...
It's a good week to be a GH user!
