- Think first, write later;
- Do not rush into purchasing servers. You might not need them for another 10 months;
- It takes away a lot of family time to do side projects;
- NOT playing any games saves tremendous amounts of time. Also applies to watching TV;
- If you get stuck - get some sleep. Morning brings you better ideas;
- Write proper abstractions or you'll end up refactoring everything way more often that you'd like;
- Side projects need a loo-ooooot of your will and determination19 -

A while ago I had all these ideas for side projects, and I really wanted to create something. However, every time I started to work on it I usually started the IDE, wrote a couple of lines, and quickly lost motivation. This kept going for a while. I just wasn't feeling it and when there is little or no (visible) progress it can be hard for me to continue working.
Then one day I wanted to push through it, and decided to set a rule: I have to make at least one commit per day, no matter how small.
So I (re)started work on a side project, and by the time I was satisfied with what I'd want to commit I've made enough progress to want to continue working on it. This quickly turned minutes of coding into (late) hours. Now I have a couple of side projects going which are progressing quite nicely, and I feel motivated to work on them again.
I don't know if there are any other people on here who've had this feeling, but if you did maybe this'll help you :) I'd love to hear from you how you keep yourself motivated!10 -

I rewrote my static website generation from jekyll to custom python code over single night.
Literally all jekyll plugins I use including seo, rss, syntax highlighting inside markdown content, sitemap, social plugins, css sass, all of it.
Now it’s around 400 lines of python code that I understand completely. I didn’t touch any existing templates and after comparing output I got even better results now and it’s working faster.
I skipped drafts as I don’t need them now.
Why ? Cause now I can make better generator for my side projects that can include some partial website generation, better modification and date handling, tree structure, etc.
What I will do now is that I will parse bunch of content to create markdown files that will be sucked by this generator to create static web pages that will flood internet lol.
Still I didn’t believe it was possible to rewrite all of it so quickly. I sit yesterday around 4pm and finished around 6am.
I started thinking that maybe I am crazy and no one can help me.9 -
All these developers complaining about not being able to finish the million side projects they have and I'm sitting here wishing I was creative enough to have one.4

• Plan out everything by taking notes on the rough functionality of the project and how it could be done in a preferably simple way
• Writing code, but documentating it while doing so
• Also trying to write clean code so it can be more easily built upon
• Also keeping everything simple. If I'm using nasty, unreadable one-liners because of efficiency advantages, I'm putting a comment there for what could alternatively be used + explaining it

If you are working on multiple projects a great tool to make you very productive and keep organized is a simple checklist.
For many years I have jotted one down each and every morning listing what I want to accomplish that day. I even include simple items. Crossing each task out as I complete it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Checklists have enabled me to complete projects at work and many free and commercial side projects including software and technical books.

I have a habit of leaving random TODOs in random files of projects I work on. Then, when I come back to work on the projects I display a list of all TODOs and try to implement them only to find out that I already implemented everything and forgot to delete the TODOs, on the positive side I feel like I accomplished a lot without actually doing anything 😂😂😂

How do you deal with a problem that feels completely over your head? I want to develop side projects but sometimes I have trouble starting/continuing when I feel like I can’t find a solution after hours of research.

jQuery < 3.4.0 is a known moderate severity vulnerability now and Github just send me about 20 alert mails for repos which are using jQuery that I had used for side projects.

Quick question, how do you guys find the energy/motivation to create side projects?
Currently, I'm working around 8 hours a day and afterwards I can't really think about getting on the PC as I know that I will burn out eventually and end up messing up the following work day.
Do you take a shorter work day? Do you work on non IT related side-projects? Maybe someone wants to discuss on how to avoid burn-outs and still have fun while working and doing side-projects? :) All ideas are welcome for this topic!11 -

I'm learning nginx and it's simplying the way I think about web projects.
I used to think that when I used a server side framework, then that should be the master and all should go through it. Noob me.
I used to put client side projects (like create-react-app of vue-cli projects) right inside the server side project.
But with nginx you can just route subpaths to different places, then instead of having, let's say, the react project inside rails, they would be in separate git projects.
In fact, I no longer need to restrict myself to a single server framework.
I love several aspects of rails. I love several others of node. And if I need multithreaded performance, I'd very much use something like phoenix or go.
Again, with nginx, you setup subpaths with the `location` directive in the same server and voila, a no CORS setup, cookies shared and homogenous versatile website.7 -

This twitter thread got my thinking. Most of the code I’ve written in my professional life has been proprietary. My job also tends to run over the 9-5 band for various reasons depending on the current ongoing projects. When I get home I still have a house to run and a family to tend to. As such my GitHub has been mostly untouched since university some years ago. I’ve tried committing to a few oss projects but I just can’t find the time. However, it is an *expectation* in our industry that you have published projects and lots of public GitHub commits if you want to be recruited by another company. No other industry works this way and this is crazy and unfair4 -

For me side projects have been things I'll make to do something that others will use. Some people call it innovation, some call it side business. But that's how i look at side projects. So the points below are more to do with entrepreneurial experiences.
1. If there are more people involved, ensure that there is work for everybody (also level of commitment is tested by how much they put in). Also have as varied set of skills as possible. So that areas are well defined in terms of scope of work and areas of expertise.
2. Put in some money. Money is super glue. It will ensure that you're committed to the thing. Things change when decent amount of money is involved. You're invested, as may be others.
3. Learn something as an intention. This has nothing to do with the learnings you'll get on the way. This one seems obvious, but nevertheless needs to be said.
4. Set timelines and deadlines. Ask someone else to check on whether you're keeping on to your deadlines or not.
5. Don't go live without proper testing.
6. Make something you feel strongly about. The path will be exciting and clear.
7. Talk to people to get their feedback on everything. You may not like what's told to you. Listen dispassionately. Absorb everything. Feel miserable. But listen and think about it after sleeping over it.
8. Continuation of above point. Talk to varied set of people in terms of backgrounds. You would be surprised as to how differently people think.
9. Ask for help when stuck. Kill your ego and be vulnerable.
10. Check out what's already available. What value are you adding. And make it! -

Side projects are one of the biggest battery booster you can have.
For me it's common to get burnt out with fixing a bug or refactoring some pretty old logic, and working in side projects is a nice break to recharge the batteries without necessarily getting your mind totally out of programming. It doesn't matter if they are yours our someone else's, they can do wonders.
(Also, it's good to learn different stuff from what you are used to, like frontend developer working on some back-end logic in a side project)1 -
Just "finished" a side project (I know right, unprecedented) to be graced immediately afterward with another approach to vastly improve one of its features. Well shit, now I HAVE to implement it otherwise it'll just bug the shit out of me for the rest of time!

Sometimes I think to keep development as a hobby for my side projects and not as a full time job.
Hate how development/programming has to compromised for businesses.
Hoping some of you will get what I'm trying to say. -
1. Finish/start to work on side projects
2. Learn Erlang or something similar
3. Read atleast one book per month (may or may not be related to programming) -
Life :)
But seriously, there's sooooo many side projects I'd really like to start/finish I can't even list them...1 -

The biggest things I’ve probably learned working on side projects are patience and planning. Side projects are a great place to hone your skills of negotiation with other people, but I’ve personally learned a great deal about the process of architecture, simply by doing side projects where I’ve experienced scoping and tooling problems later on. Being patient lends itself to getting better at planning. Working with others on side projects has given me insight into “when to hold em and when to fold em”...and again, this patience education has often helped me be a better planner for a multitude of tasks.

What do you use for your side-projects regarding Anti-DDoS protection?
I have a community with 1-2k daily users hosted in Siteground. Currently, I am not experiencing any DDoS issues (mainly L4) but I used to when I was using another service provider. The trade-off is that the machine and the service I'm paying here is way more expensive.
I don't care about managing the server, but I was looking for a cheaper option to get my project with.
The stack is LAMP and it is an Invision Power Board forum.
What do you recommend? Which service(s) do you use for your projects and how do you prevent DDoS on your side?13 -
Where do you find inspiration for side projects?
Years ago I was full of ideas, and I've had the chance to explore a lot and build experience. I've even built a few successful projects.
But now, between work and university, it seems that my creative thinking is completely shut down.
The few ideas that come to my mind are useless or so trivial that someone else did them already.

Current side project: A Gradle plugin to automate the build.gradle for Minecraft mods through ForgeGradle, Minecraft Forge, CurseGradle, Maven, and soon, Git changelogs.

For a side project I identified the need for RPC (originally over Websocket but can be extended to WebRTC/DTLS) that supports
- JSON-serializable values
- Promises
- MessagePorts (including shortcut detection for ports that are passed back on a different route)
- async functions
I have ideas for all of these and this is an exciting prospective library, but it's also major scope bloat that will prevent me from ever finishing the project that depends on it.

Within only a few days I finished 2 side projects I had been putting of for a long time and brought a 3rd 9ne from about 20% to 80% completion. Oh boy do I love those productive days! -

Work on my own side projects. Even just taking notes about what to do and what to avoid. When I think my own stuff avoids the conceptual flaws which cause low motivation at work, I feel fine again! Bosses never learn, but I sure do!

I'm working on an internal overhaul for Orchid phasing out the last bits of code from May's crunch and making the loading pipeline much more transparent and easier to optimize, but I'm starting to get really tired of high theory and tree walking algorithms.
What are some light hearted projects that can benefit from a scripting language? I don't mind if existing scripting languages would be an objectively better choice, I don't want to build something perfect here, I just wanna have fun with this project again.
