Client has an "urgent" release that needs to be launched immediately... So they keep changing the spec every few minutes with new changes, but are upset that the product isn't launched yet. Lol. Got to love clients.1
"We know you were an intern yesterday, but the last senior (who was actually a junior) resigned so now you have the project and a team of 5 other interns because they all look up to you. Here's 15$/h (actually not a bad salary in my country) for your efforts."
I've become an expert at firefighting with technologies that I haven't heard of an hour ago.5
Me: Why are we spending time building reports for Support? AFAIK they never read or use them.
Boss: Seems they expect you to do it.
Me: Then what exactly are they supposed to be doing? All the issues seem to just escalate back to us.... We should just make sure issues never get into PROD
Boss: I agree, they're always firefighting... we gave them more funding so eventually they should catch up **Me: I highly doubt it, you should just stop hiring monkeys** esp. if we prevent PROD issues.
Me: Yea... we should prevent production issues because someone always has to pay off the (technical) debt and interest rates in PROD are very high6
Over one year into development, we have a bespoke file storage system produced by mashing 3 other bespoke file storage systems into one platform, and it is still incapable of downloading/uploading files reliably. The aforementioned mashing took 3 months and was rushed into production with an absolute litany of issues.
Instead of fixing things properly. We are apparently still in firefighting bodge mode.
While all of these issues persist there is an ongoing project to squeeze more features into this software.
I need a new job, gardening perhaps.
It's not a new year unless you spend your first day back firefighting shit that broke over the holidays 🙃
