The feeling when you try to be creative on the first commit message but end up using 'Initial commit'...

I have just started out on Linux (Ubuntu because I don't know anything (please don't judge me (you're not judging me right?))) and I don't know anything aside from Linux relies on Terminal a lot. The tools are already installed (VSCode, git, etc.) and everything dark-themed. Is there anything I should have in your opinion, and where should I start?

I've just lost my grandfather last Friday from liver and gallbladder failure. Him being a composer and a musician impacted me a lot as a pianist try-hard. I regret I prioritized my studying for college over him and only visited him twice. But he saw my performance from my parents (they recorded it) and he complimented it, so it's more than enough for me. Rest in peace gramp, and thank you.

Sat at my desk this morning, computer incredibly slow, lots of error windows saying files could not be found.

I decide to reboot. Post is slow. And that's a HDD failure. I lost half of my storage. Luckily, almost everything is for projects so it's all in the git repo.

It feels good when you mentor someone.

I did GSoC 2018, so I encouraged my friends(3) to take part in GSoC'19. On May 6 the results were declared and I wasn't selected (hurts) but 2 of my friends were selected and after hearing that I completely forgot about my own failure.

I mean one of them didn't even knew how to code in December'18 and he got selected for the program in May'19.

I have to admit it was frustrating in the starting, explaining how Git works, how not to mess up branches etc but in the end it all paid off.

But still there was some work to do because only 2/3 got selected so I pushed the 3rd, told him not get demotivated, started finding internship for him and now he'll be working with an org on developing their app.

Weird thing about this is that neither I got selected for the program nor I have an internship for the summers but I am still f**king happy.

I've been training a few junior devs for about a month in the use git and adopting to a collaborative team workflow. My blood is boiling at this point. As part of the training we had the junior team build an iOS app. Their solution was for each of the to have a git repo of their own and a master repo for everyone. If they can get it to work in their individual repos, they would move that code over to the master repo. This seemed to have worked for them but it's completely wrong in trying to understand how integrating their work by the hour or so would benefit everyone involved and ultimately how that can influence the quality of the product. So I highlighted the problem with the individual repos and encouraged the use of a single remote repo. OOP is none existent all the code is slapped into a view controller. I have about given up. Let's see what this week will bring.

Man, I think teaching is sooo hard...

it seems I can only start from two points: or I suppose the person is rock dumb and start sentences like "you know what top means right?"

(this is especially true because I'm not in a English speaking country and all of my references are in English (cuz since I learned it, I think it's easier to find good content in English))

or I go like:
"you only have to create a branch with the feature, the a class that implements the X interface to do this"
when the person doesn't even know how to make a function.

And now, I could convince the boss git is important and we should use it (I'm a intern). Result is: I need to teach git (git above all things, I have to teach git) to the other intern because the two interns will be responsible for taking care of the repos.

Not saying that I will fuck up, but leaving the repos to the interns, is this really a good idea 😂

So I have this habit of copying all my family pics and kids videos onto portable hard disks. Have a 500GB Western Digital since 2012 and another WD 1TB since 2016.
Had one portable HDD failure before that back in 2010, but that contained only old projects code {when I didn't know git} .
So any advice you guys have for me on managing backups of these life memories? I mean I don't trust cloud storage - Google Drive, DropBox etc. And don't want any 3rd party poking into my stuff. That's why these items go straight from Camera to HDD.
What should I do to prepare for another failure? And is there any kind of RAID available in the form of portable solution?
Is it a good idea to change HDD every 5 years or so?
