I'm a little late to this, but that Python master/slave issue.. what the fuck is up with that?!

=> Fuck off. If you want to serve social justice, help people in third-world countries that need your help.
=> Also, you do realize that the use of master/slave is just as much applicable to technology as client/server or host/guest are, right? It's a relationship between fucking machines or code blocks, not humans.

You say that you're improving the Python project with this.
=> Fuck off. It breaks existing documentation and needlessly abstracts terminology that is used pretty much everywhere. What do you prefer, conciseness and a language to be easy to understand or for it to become all cushioned to soothe your frail feelings?

You know, there's something else that I wanted to talk about that's related to this. I have Asperger Syndrome, which on paper is a disability. In practice it's difficulty to socialize while having an above average IQ. That "disability" is what drove me into technology. When I see job listings actively prefer people with disabilities for social justice, you know what? That offends ME. Because I wouldn't want to be chosen as the best applicant just because it ticks social justice boxes. I want to be chosen as the best applicant because I outcompeted every other applicant with actual skill and fitness to do my job.

Also, when a company sells you a defective unit, would you be happy? Of course not. So why are you happy when they employ a defective? I am someone that would - on paper - be impeded by natural selection, because I am "handicapped". But I'm all for it. Humanity is what it is today - shit - partly because defectives have become widely accepted into society. Call me a bigot, but I'd rather be called that than to not raise concerns about this trend.

On the subject of handicaps, that's a term that's used in games, what for aiding the player that can't win against the regular opponent (which is usually just a fucking bot, wtf yo). I am handicapped, therefore YOU shouldn't use the word in a sense where it's totally reasonable to use it!! Says no one ever, me neither. Grow a fucking pair and realize that code isn't written with the intent to offend anyone. So why are you?

All this "political correctness" cancer spreading through the Python community at the moment over "master/slave" terminology has me wondering where will it end. When the pendulum swings will be have a pro-life movement opposed to pre-emptively killing processes? Will a branch of PETA form to oppose the taxonomic appropriation of reptilian names for the language as a whole? Are we going to need to find gender-neutral names for motherboards to avoid offending those who are offended by the oppressive digital binary? Will removing "mother" from the name motherboard invite 6th wave feminists to decry the influence of toxic masculinity in electronics? Do snake lives matter? Seriously, some people need to take a month off to go fuck themselves somewhere far far away and stop confusing "diversity" with "rampant idiocy".

I've tried to stay out of the fray regarding replacing long-standing terminology to use "safe" inclusive wording instead because it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me to just use the new wording. If the old wording wasn't hurting people (this is an argument that a of a lot of people use regarding this mass naming change movement) then the new wording shouldn't hurt anyone either...

Some dumb motherfuckers are trying to replace the word 'execute' with 'start'/'run'.

That's just some fucking ignorant plebian shit right there. The literal definition of execute is:

"The act or process to carry out fully or put completely into effect"

"to do what is provided or required by..."

"to perform what is required to give validity to..."

start and run don't grammatically encapsulate what execute does. And now I sound like a fucking grammar nazi because this shit is getting under my skin more than it should.

Execute's primary definition is grammatically correct for the context in which it is used.

Change Master/Slave for databases and I couldn't give a single solitary fuck about it. Primary/Secondary works just fine too. The grammatical context isn't blown away here.

But take away my execute and sudden I get all hot and bothered with the desire to punch a nun over how stupid this "offensive words" crusade is.

When I hear, "master/slave" I don't think about terminology and syntax for a programming language I dislike because of its silly functional indent requirements. I think of jumper settings on IDE hard disks in the '90s. Primary master, secondary master, primary slave, secondary slave.

What's with all these master/slave terminology rants?

Clearly the world's biggest problem is the default of white text (foreground) on black background in most terminals.

Can't believe i've just had to explain master/slave terminology to someone who has been running our Jenkins CI/CD stack for several years.

Without getting into politics as much as I can, is there any black sw developer who is genuinely hurt by usage of blacklist/whitelist, master/slave terminology? Or is this sudden sensitivity a bullshit from white liberal silicon valley types who live in the most white populated, rich areas who have no lower class black/hispanic friends but still get offended on behalf of them?

The amount of willful ignorance about how “master/slave” might be offensive to some people is disheartening. Not surprising, but disheartening.

There are loads of terms that express the exact same relational concept, that don’t have their roots in exploitative human relationships.

Who is actually happy about the removal of the master / slave terminology from python ?

Who here is personally confused by master/slave terminology?

Back when I was younger my first contact with the master and slave terminology was through my old windows 98 computer. It would boot up and say something about the master and slave drive doing stuff.

And this was also about around the time that the "Prince of Egypt" movie had just came out.

And so in my, oh so wise little mind, thought that the master drive was whipping the slave drive into action.

So maybe, just maybe, changing the terminology might be a good thing, because my psychotic little mind was oh too happy about the idea of a master and slave drive duking it out in my computer.
