Was venting to my sister about the BS I'm dealing with one of my projects at work. Specifically the convoluted way we're building a prototype and the way all the revision requests are just going in circles.

Sister: Your job sounds annoying.

Me: Only when other people get involved.

Boss: Can we add a [Close] button at the top right of the modal instead for all the items, the back at the lower left seems out of place.

Me: What modal? You mean move the back button to the top right of the page?

Boss: And make it say [Close]

Me: But it navigates Back. It's not a modal so it doesn't close. [Back] makes more sense than [Close].

Boss: Ok
...
Boss: Change the [Back] on the modal to [Close].

Me: But... fine...

Buttons all now say "Close", they all have double quotes. No one has said anything.

I know this has been ranted about before but I'm still in my first year, it's my turn now.

If I ask about a feature in week 1 of a project and am told it is not needed, the client doesn't want it, or it is outside the SOW, then dont come back to me weeks later asking about the fucking feature!

I got a promotion at work!

Is it weird that I don't want it because I still feel like I have too much to learn to no longer be a "junior"? I'm happy that my hard work is paying off but I'm worried that this is how bad senior devs are made.

I'm attending my first develop conference next week, RailsConf in Pittsburgh. I'm pretty excited because the ruby community is always talked about as being so awesome. Anyone have any tips on making the most of my first conference? Anyone else going?

Depends on what a tough dev day is. If it was just a tough day usually playing ice hockey helps. If it was a stressful day, board games with my daughter, provided it's not a Wednesday (her Mom's night). If it's a tough problem or bug I'm working on then alcohol, running or lifting, sex, general distractions will do the trick

Suggestions for a good mechanical keyboard < $100.

I got a very cheap basic one for my home office and it's amazing to type on! It's very loud so I don't want to bring it to work and it was pretty cheap so I'm not sure how it will hold up to 8-10 hours of programming a day. I'd like to get one for the office, as a treat to myself for my promotion, but most of the suggestions I've gotten so far have been to drop $160 on Das Keyboard. I'd love to but I can't drop that much on a keyboard now.

Drop or be more flexible with the Math requirements. I took every programming course my High School offered including AP CompSci and passed with high grades. I wasn't able to pursue a degree because I wasn't "allowed" to take CS classes without first meeting the Calc 2 prerequisite. I am terrible with Math but programming makes sense to me, I'm good at it, and I enjoy it. I think it's horrible to stop someone from pursuing a degree because of a prerequisite. I understand the Math/CS relationship but being good at math doesn't make you a good developer. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
