I know ppl say there is no place like home...
but after returning from places like this one, I just wanna go back there...3 -
Number one thing I never expected, when moving networking equipment...
Some idiot wired a 230v socket in a mildly terrifying and dangerous way... Yes, that is 400v and all my equipment has now let out the magic white smoke...
Fuck some electricians!24 -
Building my own accounting software because everything else is overly complicated and is trying to compete with enterprise accounting tools. All I want is some budgeting, some bill tracking, and categorization.
Writing in Ruby because I'm a masochist. Using built-in minitest because again 😈.
I have currently around 62 assertions. As soon as I add ANY new test that's literally asserting true, everything comes unglued and 20+ failures pop up. Take it out, 62 passes.
I feel like I'm going crazy at this point. The errors also don't make ANY sense. Shit like, "that record doesn't exist" when it's clearly a part of fixtures and is only used in ONE test(the one that's breaking).
Installed minitest bisect, and it's like 🤷♀️"lol get fucked bro!"
So I came here to rant about this before my battery dies and I go drink myself to sleep.
Thank you for coming to my dev-talk.8 -
I could start a cinematic universe with all the clowns I work with. The CCU. I'd probably get sued by @fullstackclown

Is there anyone who switched from Java backend (Spring Boot) to Nodejs? If yes what was your experience? Some people say it's a downgrade because of lower performance and less specialized tooling want do you think about that? Also what about salary? Is it the same level?11

So, I forked this dude's terrible project. I faked commits like implementing some incompatible feature. He talks about it on the internet, as expected.
Should I tell him?
Or should I enjoy the show?2 -
Every sacrifice you make for your job will be forgotten in a minute and won’t be rewarded unless you force their hand.
Luckily, I outsourced this experience and have never made sacrifices.2 -
Just remembering that time (years ago) at my old job when my then boss asked our 3-man team to develop an Adobe Flash multi-level beat-em-up game with customisable characters and computer AI in 6 weeks, only for the one asshole comment on Youtube to label it "aburido" (boring)
Just found a stackoverflow thread that had no answer and 2 comments. Here are the comments:
Person 1: Did you find a solution for this?
Author: Yes, please email me [...@gmail.com].
Bruh, what's wrong with some people???? Writing nothing at all would be better then that7 -
"Okay, this is way OT but here it goes. Back during the GW Bush days I noticed something strange. All five TV networks suddenly started using human(s) to refer to us. Gone were humanity, humankind, mankind (!), people, person(s), us, we and human beings I about barfed when I watched an ingenue said her best girlfriend had found a wonderful human to marry.
I see three problems. One is the way putative competitors started this newspeak in lockstep. Another is the degradation of English. The last is the loss of emotional content. Saying "Humans are responsible for climate change." is so blah it's like somebody else is responsible, like Martians, maybe like somebody else is responsible, Martians, maybe.
I apologize for the wording of this rant but I am forced to use a phone with one hand due to severe injury.3 -
If 3D design software could agree on the same fucking format being used the same fucking way, that'd be greaaaaaaaattttt!12

you know I've watched a lot of people waste their lives.
all the warm and fuzzy sentimentality I grew up to gone out the window, the subject of ownership and personal possession disrespected to the point that robot people just fucked their only chances of being anything but machines.
its fun.
just like when you people duplicate my past posts on here.11 -
Putting aside my ordinary moral horror for a moment I'd like to comment on rust.
I have never seen a language that seems to have very limited use that so many people make a point of pointing out their use of so proudly and I have to wonder why.24 -
<"Perfect is enemy of good"
>"Excellent! I keep my enemies very close"
I do believe it possible that one can find at least one perfect counter to every stupid folk saying that startup-for-brains suit bags love to parrot.

<"We must fail fast"
>"I already did it!"

<"We must have a long tail of offerings"

<"We must use agile methods"
>"An agile habit does not make an agile monk."

<"We must be flexible and adapt"
>"Is it a law or more of a rule of thumb?"

<"We must avoid bureaucracy"
>"Can I have that in writing?"3 -
Being a Woman in Tech® is exhausting because every time we know something a male superior doesn’t, we have to end our statements with “but maybe I’m wrong, what do you think?” so they feel like it’s their idea and take the topic seriously.
I used to be adamantly against this type of coddling but they beat it out of me. You can only be straightforward and confident a finite number of times before you’re pulled aside and told you’re “cocky,” “arrogant,” “irritating,” etc. So many of us use this strategy to avoid those labels, but it’s a tiring part of the job we shouldn’t have to think about.24 -
(Internal IT communication)
- Which one is the right email account for xxxx ? aaaa@ourcompany.com or bbbb@ourcompany.com?
- Yes, that's the correct one.5 -
Ahh, Unity’s “Wheel Joint.” Who knew it had “polarity.” I spent good several f*<king hours debugging this $h!+ just to find out I just placed them backwards on a 2-D car. Instead of the joint turning the wheels, they were trying to “turn the chassis.”
This meant the chassis received an impossible force which would rip it in half in real life. Of course, this was a unity game, so what happened instead was the physics engine flipping out which sent the car into the air!
I guess it was good for some lulz, but it took way too long to debug. I guess it’s time to take a little time off of that project.3
