I got my new Oryx Pro today, from System76. It came with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I opted not to get Pop!_OS or Ubuntu 18.10, as I would prefer to leave the OS on it for the longterm.

Even at 15.6", it's a BIG laptop. It measures 18" from corner to corner, when it's closed. It comfortably fits in my backpack, which is a bit on the small side, but it's probably about 30-50% heavier than a MacBook Pro.

But that size and weight are vindicated by the most thuggish hardware I have ever seen in a laptop. As configured, this machine has a 4.1GHz 8th gen i7, 32GB of DDR4 at 2666MHz, an 8GB GTX 1070, a 250GB nvme system disk, and a 1TB SSD for data.

The display is set by default to 4K resolution, but I cranked that down to FHD for the sake of my eyes and the battery. I will try some games at higher resolution at some point, but for desktop navigation, I get more use out of multiple virtual desktops than in massive resolution.

I will comment tomorrow or the day after with the steps I've taken to bend this beast to my will, and it's also important to say that I have not finished yet. This is just a summary, but I should have been in bed an hour ago, so I'm gonna go do that.

So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.

So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?

Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):

-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)

I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).

Intel is dying right now tbh. I hope the can get back on their feet but as of right now, chaos. They have had multiple ceo changes within 1 year and their current is a horrible leader. They have been really wasteful with their money (like buying McAfee...) And the inly reason they are leading in the CPU market, Tick Tock, is failing. It used to be Process - Architecture. Now intel has announced they are not changing the process for 8th gen, currently it's Process - Architecture - Optimize - Optimize - Optimize. Which is not good. It has been leaked that Intel is currently just hoping for AMD Ryzen to fail, let's face it, Ryzen seems really promising and might be the comeback AMD needs.

TLDR; Intel is a one trick pony and their one trick is failing. They have been really wasteful with their money and their current hope is that Ryzen fails.

I have an Intel CPU in my system and i find them to be better than AMD, but the tables might turn.

Got an XPS 9365 and decided after some time to remove dual boot and switch to Arch Linux entirely.

After a week or so I realised this piece of shit doesn't support supend-to-ram properly!
in s2idle the battery drains in about 20h. Also I have to run the SSD in AHCI mode to boot Linux which is slow as fuck!

Seriously Dell, a 1.5k laptop that has a great screen but can't even suspend properly or make good use of the pcie SSD? Fuck you!

Need a replacement ASAP.
Suggestions welcome. 13-14" QHD screen, 8th gen CPU, good battery...

I'm looking forward to upgrade my gaming configuration but shit me I'm lost in all those references.

I'd like the best motherboard with the best i7 8th gen with the best 32GB rams, by best I mean the components that will give me the best performance, I've already got a 1080ti and my current motherboard is an Asus z170 pro gaming (if that helps with the dimensions or anything else).

If someone can point me to some references/names/websites I'd be happy.

I'm thinking of getting a laptop for both gaming and video editing. I currently am thinking of getting a laptop with either a 7th gen i5 or 8th gen i5. Is there a huge difference in performance between the two generations? Is the 8th gen i5 core worth the extra money?

Would you suggest MacBook Air Core i5 8th gen model for a hardcore Android Developer?

- Android Studio
- 2 Android VM (MeMu, Genymotion etc)
- node.js MongoDB, Redis for server
- VS Code, Chrome, Mongodb compass
My old dell worked pretty well so far it has a core i3 with 8 gigs of RAM and 256GB SSD but processing always seemed slow but managed some how.
Suggest me if MacBook would make better choice than other windows laptop which are much more high end than MacBook on same price?

Can someone tell me why the pokemon community is so damn mad at the moment?

Am I missing something with VMs? Every time I set one up (either linux guest on win10 host or the reverse), what I get is so slow and laggy that I can barely use it. I always give my VMs about 70% of my ram and at least 4 cpu cores, but still, it ends up being as slow as my grandma's 10 year old laptop.

On the other hand, I've seen people on youtube editing fucking videos in their VMs and the performance was so good that you couldn't even tell if its a vm or not.

This happens both on my desktop (8th gen i7, 16GB ram and ssd) and on my laptop (same cpu, 8GB ram, nvme).

Is virtualbox not good enough, are my devices not powerful enough or am I just too stupid?

Any recommendations for a portable laptop (~1.5 kg) with good battery life(6:8 hrs) , great display and with 8th gen i5 or i7 costs less than 1k $?
