Sales Advisor: "4GB is more on a mac.. they use different measurements.."... at that point I gave up trying to get some info out of him10

Hello DevRant, im a junior cloud consultant and this is my story:
Last monday a salesman, i call him bob, informed me that he planned me in a project starting next week. So far so good despite im currently working already in an other project....
I tried to explain him that its impossible to be on two locations at the same time.
His answer was quite funny because he said its my problem and he promised this the customer a month ago (without asking me or looking into my calendar)
As you can imagine the customer was not happy when i contacted him, to say him that the project could not start before may.
Of course this escalated to the managing director of my company. Bob tried to made it look that it was my fault.
After a long rant mail, where i told my story and about our incompetent salesforce i got a reply from him that he is sorry and a forced excuse mail from bob.
Happy End3 -
So much rant against the GDPR. In the meanwhile USA Today created a site just for the EU. No Tracking or Ads. A site which was normally 5mb big to load is now 500kb for the EU! Awesome! Thats what the internet could be!3

My company is providing cloud infrastructure to our customers. For research purposes we are running a little openstack cloud in our laboratory datacenter were we can test stuff before implementing it in the productive environment.
Last week the manager asked me to shut down the cluster over night and only power on the servers when we need it. (about twice a week)
The reason: it produces too much heat.
My answer was: No.
First off thats not how cloud infrastructure works, and how about a proper climate control?
Sometimes i ask myself in which parallel universum our managers live 😑3 -
Printed a Pi Zero Case for @joshbent.
Hope you like it (it is the non chamfered version). It is not perfect, but I think it came out quite good. The color is a bit off in the picture. It is a really nice red in reality.6 -
Professional .NET Developer here:
After years of using Windows and C# for everything at work and at home, I finally switched yesterday from Windows 10 to Arch and from C# to Python for my hobby projects. Feels good!2 -
I really wish to live in the 80s era. I guess i was born in the wrong timeline. Watching the footage and movies of that time really makes me think yall lived a far more enriching life while half of us genz scroll our life away on these fucking apps.
Also not being rich wasn't a problem as much as it is now with all the social media narcissism that is normalized with every other joe and joess labelling their puberty as some earth shattering transformation and posting all these glow ups with filters that make em look unreal and stupid shit18 -
Screaming/getting loud is common sense in our office. If one of us thinks his opinion is the right one, we always defend our positions until a Nerf war emerges. Screaming included!8

FFS how is a guy supposed to do any work with a PC as slow as this?? how many anti-virus can you install on a single machine??!!3

Deep learning is probably (????) the only research branch where every successful paper title needs to be a stupid acronym or meme
I work in a conversational AI startup and the new intern that joined yesterday didn't understand half the memes or acronyms (especially all the Simpsons related) because apparently he's "Gen Z" and all the paper title is "Millennial" humour
He's only 2 years younger than me. Am I literally at the millennial - GenZ border ? Or the intern is out of touch ?7 -
"Microsoft programming chief to devs: Tell us where windows hurts you"
You must be kidding, right? Since Windows 10 it hurst the moment it is installed on my fucking PC. I don't want those fucking cloud functionality on my fucking PC. If I want it, I would work on a Mac FFS!
Let me decide when to update my god damn machine! Even with a fucking enterprise edition it is not possible the way I want it! Yeah, I don't have to login with a Microsoft Account, but there is always a small, little, Microsoft-Hating-Devil in my Head telling me: "Who knows, if they don't sync your clipboard even, if you don't login with a Microsoft Account?" (Cloud synced Clipboards are the next bis shit coming!!!)
There is not much left, and Linux will be my all day OS (second boot atm).4 -
just found this
// ...A shed load of voodoo is then executed...
// .. removing the need for this would have involved messing around with the existing code which is such a rat's nest that I would rather avoid it -
Have you ever watched Idiocracy? Please do. Especially the smart ones in this platform. I'm afraid it might just be the most accurate forecast of the future of humankind. I've been mentioning this movie for years.
Politics, genZ, etc. - the trend is already there.
I don't have a TV. Mostly bcz I have better things to do with my time than watch ads and tv shows.
In youtube there are people who do reviews of various things. A few days ago my wife came across one that reviews episodes of a tv show that, apparently, is shown on one of the most popular Lithuanian TV channels. It's called Undress. The idea is that 2 people, a man and a woman, meet in a studio in front of a camera, do some small talk and then undress each other. Then they go to a bed in the studio and do various tasks: provokative questions, touching, kissing, etc., occasional slips of nudity
Usually girls are strippers, porn actresses, whores, etc. Guys are salesmen, bus drivers, finance workers, etc.
It's awkward and sad to watch it. But whats even more sad is that it's broadcasted on a TV and people find it entertaining to watch. Even morevsad is that there are people who willingly sign up as participants, knowing the whole nation will be watching and they seem to enjoy it.
W.T.F... Idiocracy13 -
Some information in advance:
I developed a Word AddIn for automatic document creation. This AddIn pulls data from various systems, transforms them, if necessary and fills them into templates.
The AddIn gets rollout by another department. And by now there is version 1.3.3 out.
Now the story:
Since several months I have heard of users which have some reoccuring problems with the AddIn and I couldn't understand why. The first level support always helped them with some workarounds.
Now, I helped one user by myself and what did I see?
The user had version 1.0.5 installed!!!! WTF!? The version info is very prominent for the first level support and they should know, that this is not the correct version!
I think I have to implement a version check now, if the rollout is so great working...maybe I should have done this since the beginning... -
Today I wrote my first small python application as an exercise:
Scraping all post EuroJackpot draws from a website, save them in a database, sort them, some checks and do some combinations. Everything quite clean in classes and functions.
And the "application" is just 100 lines big. I love it so far how much can be accomplished with just a few lines. -
I wondered what they were doing.. after a while they called me over.. they were trying to inner join 3 tables and struggling.. FFS.
