I try to explain my problems to my 6yo twins. It is just HILARIOUS to see their small faces going "huh. Did you tried using that spark thing to send your emails for you?".
Srsly, they give better advice than half the devs I work with. Rubber ducking be damned.6 -
A glass of cognac, a blotter of LSD, go to the spa for a massage, turn on some Sibelius, Mahler or Tchaikovsky, and play Factorio all night.
Sometimes I also just work on my forever unfinished SciFi novel.
Or I install FL studio to realize 30 minutes later that I'm about as musically gifted as a pile of bricks.
Recently I was fed up with work and made a nice new bed for my daughter out of cherry & oak wood. Carpentry is a nice distraction from coding.4 -
By not having them. Seriously, every job I had was more than average paying and I was overqualified for the tasks. Sure I didn’t develop oh-so-important software but I never had to do overtime, lose sleep because of workplace difficulties.
Pick your fights well. This profession is unfair. No need to endanger yourself for idealism. -
DevRant truth: as a white man in my 40s, the only socially accepted (and taught when I was younger) coping mechanisms are smoking and drinking too much and other questionable life choices.
What I tell everyone else: I go for a walk and then do some mindfulness practice.5 -
I have a power nap after lunch. No matter what. Waking up from a nap is like getting a new extra day for free. And this time whatever was bad before the nap just doesn't seem so bad anymore.7

Block off blocks of time as “unavailable” and use that for me time. Gym. Take a walk. Watch some tv. Read a book.
-
Putting mobile phone to DnD.
Putting on Bluetooth headsets with ANC, blasting some good shit music.
Violently cooking or desperately ordering food at the good restaurants.
While waiting, grinding some coffee beans, making fresh coffee or some nice tea with milk.
Laying on the sofa in a food induced coma, turning on any streaming service with the real bad shitty movies.
Hentai Kamen, The Machine Girl, ...
Anything thats either pure groteske bullshit or that doesn't require more than a braincell cause it appeals either to the violent or complete nonsense side of my brain.
Last but not least, a few cold beers.
ANC headset stays on, just switching from music to tv - shutting out all the outside noise.1 -
My personal top 4:
good tea,
good booze,
time with gf,
time with friends,
Just clears my head, but doing any of my other hobbies can really help because it just gets me in a different headspace -
- hanging my brain on a nail and drying it watching Netflix
- stroll/hike in nature (park, forest, by the river, etc.). At least 1 hour long
- warm seasons: riding around the city on my e-scooter at max speeds (works amazingly well!)
- warm seasons: gardening1 -
Less screen time.
Stepping away to realize that maybe I'm part of the problem.
Talking to my manager about frustrations if they persist. -
Two words, red bull.
I dont drink coffee often or drink it otherwise, so it gives a real kicker to the old brain.4 -
Guess, I'm slithering my way out from "tough dev days" by mentoring. I tell you, it's very convenient.3
-
Peace and quiet.
I'll play some smooth jazz or light classical, sit in my beanbag chair by the window, and take a 30 minute nap.
When I'm done, either the problem isn't a problem anymore or I have figured out a solution to my problem in my sleep.
This is something pretty new to me since wfh started and is one of the many of reasons why I will never go back.4 -
Take a walk, or focus on something else for a while, then after I've had a break I can return to whatever the problem is.

Go for a walk or run outside. Get a fellow dev to play a game on the company xbox. Stop the task and start a new task from the sprint.
