Designer reporting a UI/Design related bug:
I noticed the wrong colour is being used on screen X. It should be xxxxx. Its imperative that we fix this, as it destroys the entire design motif. Our colour scheme draws influence from the ancient Mayans. They were relentless in their pursuit of excellence, whether it be their temples, their sophisticated writing system, their complex calendars, or their advanced mathematics. They sought immortality through their work, as do we with ours. Users will become lost in our onboarding unless we harmonise the flow, the slightest deviation could be catastrophic. Please fix this as priority 1, to avoid running the balance of the app
Designer reporting a technical bug:
Oh yeah, app crashed last week. Not sure what I was doing, maybe look into that7 -
Hello DevRant community! It’s been a while, almost 5 years to be exact. The last time I posted here, I was a newbie, grappling with the challenges of a new job in a completely new country. Oh, how time flies!
Fast forward to today, and it’s been quite the journey. The codebase that once seemed like an indecipherable maze is now my playground. The bugs that used to keep me up at night are now my morning coffee puzzles. And the team, oh the team! We’ve moved from awkward nods to inside jokes and shared victories.
But let’s talk about the real hero here - the coffee machine. The unsung hero that has fueled late-night coding sessions and early morning stand-ups. It’s seen more heated debates than the PR comments section. If only it could talk, it would probably write its own rant about the indecisiveness of developers choosing between cappuccino and latte.
And then there are the unforgettable ‘learning opportunities’ - moments like accidentally shutting down the production server or dropping the customer database. Yes, they were panic-inducing crises of apocalyptic proportions at that time, but in hindsight, they were valuable lessons. Lessons about the importance of thorough testing, proper version control, reliable backup systems, and most importantly, owning up to our mistakes.
So here’s to the victories and failures, the bugs and fixes, the refactorings and 'wontfix’s. Here’s to the incredible journey of growth and learning. And most importantly, here’s to this amazing community that’s always been there with advice, sympathy, humor, and support.
Can’t wait to see what the next 5 years bring! 🥂3 -
i genuinely like programming. it's like solving logical puzzles for me, challenges on a smaller or bigger scale, and this is fun.
i always feel this when working on something on my own, i.e. a full stack project where i take care of everything.
but i'm so sick and tired of corporate software development.
i'm tired of scrum, all these scrum meetings, it feels like they are sucking my life energy away. if at least i had the feeling that i work in a team where everybody contributes, the team work is nice and also project management is aligned.
i'm tired of having too many different tasks in too many different areas or projects and never having the feeling to be able to really concentrate on one thing, to be able to do a job well enough so that i'm content with it.
i'm tired of this feeling that what i'm working on is not meaningful. the feeling that my team is not part of a bigger story where everyone contributes their part and where there is a sense of productive collaboration between teams. the feeling that mismanagement will result in a lot of money being burned, because of work being thrown away or becoming irrelevant, or because of miscommunication, making promises that can impossibly be delivered on.
this feeling that i cannot really improve or fix the ship we are sailing with, but rather being handed a bucket and being told to constantly remove the leaking water and put it back in the ocean, but always at multiple sites of the ship all at once.
i'm tired of being the only female dev and altogether feeling so different from the rest of the team, feeling that i do not belong there.
even though i need to make a living, i just can't imagine anymore to spend so much of my lifetime for something that makes me feel so bad...8 -

I’m about to quit this job, this customer don’t care about the people, they just want quick results and people available 24/7, this is taking my mental health, I think I’ll become a farmer instead.3

> worst coding procrastination story
worst and best at the same time:
If you wait long enough things might resolve themselves.
My team inherited an ancient site. Hosted on an old host that the org wanted to kill, using an old log service the org wanted to kill.
A ticket was written in 2021 to migrate that site's hosting and logging to the new services our org started using.
My team kept avoiding it since it was a cheap unimportant site.
in 2023 we were about to finally take action - then we hear "Turns out the new hosting platform and logging platform are way too expensive - I know all of you have migrated to these new services but you gotta revert and go back the old ones til we figure this out"
We didn't have to do squat.
Problem solved by procrastinating ✅1 -
Used to be if I was good enough, now it's if work is going to make me a worse person than I was when I started (passionless and not apathetic)1
-
What’s with all these people saying, “reach out to help for me anytime!” - but when you actually ask for help, they never respond? Like damn looks like I can’t trust ya cad ass anymore.4
-
I repeat (last days event made me realize that even more) compared to one of my friend who's a psych nurse handling people who have abused children or decapitated their mum, with a shit pay and so understaff they are confronted to rape and suicide all the time, or even compared to my parents who worked their ass off in blue collar jobs, our industry is a sinecure.
I should stop complaining5 -
c# AutoMapper is SOSO good.. On paper...
Once you start using and thre is couple of levels of inheritance involved, it turns to shit.
Searched for fucking 5 hours a problem... Only to find "Oh yeah in this case you need to manually map properties"
Fuck you
JsonConvert.Deserialize(JsonConvert.Serialize(myShit)) it is5 -
Maybe the reason we find rain comforting is because of our evolutionary reflex that tells us that predators are not going to come out and hunt in the ongoing rain.16

Story time.
I worked on a project recently where the HTML was written just _perfectly_. Div elements were exactly indented as the blocks on the browser window.
CSS classes were self explanatory and altering them didn't introduce any new kind of bug on the browser window.
Introducing a new div block with CSS classes fit perfectly in the window along with responsiveness on different screens.
JS was also written in a self explanatory way.
It was such an Italian Chef's kiss grade of work that I just sat back and admired the glorious work for 10 mins. Totally deserved it.7 -
Managers when a developer misses something on a project: “we need to go red fucking alert and schedule several meetings on why this developer inadequacy can never happen again and make sure to record this and make sure the stupid ass devs read all the requirements and use this mistake to offload more of our work onto the dev team”
Managers when they or any other team member misses something on a project: “oh we just made a slight woopsie, just a tiny little miss on our part, a lil fucky wucky, no need to worry”6 -
What is it with networking guys refusing to do any kind of fault finding? Pretty much everywhere I've worked they seem to be overpaid address hogs who occasionally want everyone to be proud of them for installing a new switch.
Currently seeing a production issue that's clearly due to spikes in packet loss on a certain part of the network - but oh no, it's always "our tests are fine", "we can establish a route no problem", "this is an application level issue", etc.
No you morons, when a dozen unrelated applications hosted on different cloud services fail because none of them can contact anything in your particular subnet in your data center at the same time, it's a damn networking issue. Sort it out.14 -
understanding code that you haven't written, especially in large code bases is a skill by itself that has nothing to do if you're a good coder or not.2

My girlfriend dumped me after I named a class after her.
She thought I treated her like an object !!5 -
People in this web industry act like they are doing something actually important and they need to rally. Fuck those people - eat a dick.2

Fuck today and fuck every piece of shit manager and non-dev coworker that thinks they contribute anything meaningful besides being a fucking idiot and making things complicated. I hope my team, except for the other devs, jumps off a bridge into a valley of dicks and spikes. I hope my client tells them to personally fuck themselves for being such a useless waste of space. Fuck off and die cunts.1

* Today you have to live within 150 miles of a few cities as we are working on creating "hubs" but it's still remote!
