Sooo my friend asked my to become more active on steam and i did something about it! I'm going to be become the most activities steam user!31
-
Steam knows I will be buying a game tomorrow.
Next thing we know, the robots have taken over our civilization.4 -
Now I want to create some kind of game, a bit like "hacknet" (check it out on steam, really cool), but the one who answers you is your own OS5
-
So Valve just released an update to Steam that includes a fork of WINE called Proton that allows Linux users to play and install Windows games as if they were native.
About 30 titles are currently officially supported but more are planned.30 -
Can I get a ++ from all the lady developers on this app or from anyone who supports women in STEM? Signed, a fellow female engineerundefined engineers developers steam stem acm-w lady engineers women in engineering and science wise36
-
I'm signing up for steam for playing a specific game.
Entered a freaking difficult/long password: "Choose a less commonly used password"
Yeah right, what in the actual fuck.23 -
Starting to feel that devRant is a really nice place to hang out.
Even though we have differences in languages (C#, PHP, JavaScript, JAVA), culture (semi brackets, tabs and spaces) and tools (Sublime, vim, nano, Atom) but we strive to be a better coder by encouraging one another or ranting to blow some steam.
Like seriously guys, you guys are awesome! It feels that I am becoming more human by visiting devRant (or maybe I'm turning into AI).12 -
Dear Steam,
Is it possible to send ONE FUCKING E-MAIL for the "items on my wish list that are on sale", instead of sending 4738258382 EMAILS FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE LIKE COMPLETE FUCKING MORONS?!?!6 -
Installs 45gb game
Next day do an update - not enough storage
Sees 28gb free on disk
Googles
Turns out steam copies your entire game during an update so it can roll back of there's an error
Fucking brilliant.19 -
"I don't use Linux because you can't game on Linux"
Shut your fucking cocksucking mouth.
Yes, support isn't the greatest and a lot of games don't work on Linux yet and some graphical drivers don't work.
But don't fucking say you can't game on Linux because you fucking can.
Steam has a Linux game library that keeps on growing and growing.
There are some platforms for games especially for Linux as well even.
I've seen steam games with freaking high requirements run with any lag on Linux computers - open source amd drivers worked well.
The support could be much better (of games/drivers) but YOU CAN FUCKING GAME ON LINUX.
THAT YOUR GAME DOESN'T RUN ON LINUX DOES NOT MEAN THAT NO SINGLE GAME DOES.
MOTHERFUCKER115 -
Friend: You are a computer engineer right?
Me: Yeah
*In my head: Dont ask me if I can hack someone's facebook account.
Friend: Can you hack steam and buy games for free??
FML 😑🔫11 -
*Showerthoughts*
Steam downloads games over plaintext, so can I whireshark a game and get it for free then?
*Showerthoughts*24 -
Was very much surprised when I found my favourite game of all times on steam with the steam play icon next to it! That doesn't mean it supports Linux but it means that it *might* work on it through steam play.
Bought the fucker and was holding my breath when starting a new game because the last game I tried lagged a little on Linux nonetheless.
It runs smooth as fuck! Quite heavy graphics but damn, this game was the reason I had a hard time leaving windows years and years ago and now i can play it on Linux 😍
Steam Play, I fucking love you and thanks to steam for their dedication towards Linux!13 -
A year ago I would have said:
"Because I love solving logic puzzles, there's no greater joy than finding a very simple, elegant translation of a user's requirements into code"
Then 2020 came. I'm SO FUCKING FED UP with coworkers and managers who miss all the required competence to organize and communicate about projects as they are fundamentally incompatible with the concept of working from home.
I'm quite sure I'm the last one to give up at my work.
The company chat has completely died down. I've tried setting up meetings, but even my bosses show up irregularly, confused about why I'm calling them in the middle of their Netflix marathon.
So if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. My answer is now:
"I'm a developer because I get nearly 6 figures, for going through my Steam Library while completely shitfaced at 11AM. When I sober up in the afternoon, I work on some hobby projects. I get to spend 500/m on ordering sandwiches"8 -
My 1.5 year old 1tb SSD just died unexpectedly. (Samsung EVO 850). It might be under warranty yet.
Fortunately the only data I lost was my debian install, some steam games, bookmarks, and a few unfinshed projects.
I kept everything important on a backup spinning drive -- which is also dying. Joy. But I might be able to save its data.30 -
When I self-published my first indie game on steam and people actually started buying it.
Remember sitting on the floor with a bottle of vodka trying to tell my girlfriend like that lunatic dotconnecting on a whiteboard meme guy, this is really bad because too much people bought it.
They should spend their money on something useful instead of me, I felt like a fraud.
It turned out good in the end tho, made some updates for it that made it better so i felt better about it, plus got a job from a publisher because they liked my game 😃6 -
The Raspberry Pi is the most fun toy I've bought in ages. And this is coming from a guy who has 700+ games in his steam library, with dozens of midi equipment lying around.7
-
DevRant feels a lot like home. Not because I'm a pro developer - I'll probably never be one. But because I get to spend time with "my people". It's like when I went to Dreamhack for work and after 30+ years of being weird there were suddenly over four thousand people just like me.
There is no shortage of online IT culture but devRant is unique. It could have become the usual cesspool of hate, misogony, trolling but hasn't. Somehow it gives me hope to se a place meant for blowing of steam turning out to be one of the more respectful communities. So - thanks people! Your rants actually make my days a little better.12 -

I'm talking with this teenager that believes himself an engineer because he built a PC.
He is vehement in telling me that Linux came out in 2007 and it was Valve who developed it for Steam!
They he Googled it to prove me wrong and then... never spoke to me again 😂
I'm an Arch user dude! That's like, just one level under Linus Torvalds!13 -
Hey everyone :D
I've been working on an medieval fantasy MMORPG called The Immortal Rift with a small team of developers from all around the world and we plan to start a closed beta before going on Early Access on Steam next month.
So I finished the pre-registration page a few days ago and I'd like to invite any of you that have some time to try it out :D

Just finished installing Deepin OS on my old laptop as an attempt to get familiar with linux (coming from win10). It looks gorgeous, I got at least four orgasms from the installation process alone. And it comes with lots of cool apps preinstalled (Chrome, Spotify, Steam, etc). So far I'm very happy with it.30

Finally bought NieR from Steam with 50% off.
But the game crushes at start due to visual C++ redistributable issues.
Fucken DLL hell...
I start write js instead 🤦♂️27 -
I have a laptop which I bought for the sole purpose of gaming and I bought a hell lot of games off steam to startup.
But the problem here is I have to run those games on Windows (nvidia graphics card) and I only have a primary hdd and no ssd. Even though the ram and processor is up to speed due to high I/O on disk, I am not able to get a good performance out of it. To top it off random Windows processes hogging hdd in the background.
Any suggestions on what to do?3 -
Back home from college.

My manager just left the company to become a independent game developer. His game is also available in steam as early access.
He just became extra cool to me.
And he is using unreal engine for it.
That made him extra cooler to me 😁3 -
We are on a roll here people (side note, if You are joining the site, thank you but if you are using disposable email accounts at least wait for the verification code to arrive to said account):
So our most well know and belowed CMS that brings lots of love and feels to those that have to (still) deal with it, had some interesting going on:

Remember that "little" miner thingy that some users here has thought about using for their site? Even Yours truly that does make use of Ads Networks (fuck you bandwidth is not free) even I have fully condenmed the Miner type ads for alot of reasons, like your computer being used as a literal node for DDoSing, well... how about your "Antivirus" Android phone apps being literally loaded with miner trojans too?

I finished two projects. Both of them need to connect to each other. However, the tool to do that is not currently licensed to achieve my desired outcome. I email my boss to check the status of the license key I need, that they promised, and the only thing I get back is "Correct." Seriously? 😠 The person who has the company credit card and authority to buy, also the same one that gives me a deadline to turn this shit in, can't give me the time of day to respond to an email? Their response wasn't even relevant. I've been trying to move beyond this roadblock for a week now! I'm a pretty independent guy, but I'm not going to buy the license myself for a tool that I didn't even want to use. So when someone comes to my cube and I'm raging on Steam, ✋ I don't want to hear anything about company time, because mine isn't being respected either. 👊👊

I just found a game (have not played it yet) that I think everyone here will cream over.
It's an insanely detailed hardware/ low level/ make-your-own-computer game.
I watched the trailer and it sets you up by teaching you logic gates and basic circuitry.
Then, it eventually teaches you how to build your own computer using these gates.
Then, you start creating your own assembly language using the computer you made.
Then, you use your computer to solve problems like sending a robot through a maze or just building snake on a display.
Absolutely check it out, it's on sale for $13 USD. I just bought it. Turing Complete on Steam.10 -
Some interesting news:
(Non-literal translation)
Steam is currently working on a Windows emulator that may run any games from your steam library on Linux.
What do you think guys?
I like that Steam cares about Linux users.10 -
Steam have literally sent my username/password in an email. Couldn’t someone easily intercept that?19
-
Problem 1: that's literally all of steam
Problem 2: they don't police it now
Problem 3: just... All of this21 -
A minute of middle-fingered-silence to those fuckers who buy expensive high end machines and play finch stupid video games like counter strike and all and fucking don't let their roommate sleep!!!!
Fuck you roommate!!
Fuck steam.18 -
not really a rant, but but i am intrigued...
got an email that my rockstar account (gta) email was changed.
changed the email and password and noticed that all the details were changed (nickname, date of birth etc) and the guy even posted on support asking to remove steam link (probably could not login). But rockstar requires a screenshot of user logged in to steam (as if that is hard to fabricate...), so he gave up :D
i'm not even mad, i'm wondering what's the guy's story. Probly bought a stolen account for cheap, hoping to play :(
Maybe i should just let him play the game, since i'm not... -
okay just found the package "sl" on linux.
I mistyped ls and my shell told me well you can have this command with the package "sl".
Looked what the package does and well now i have it installed and everytime i mistype ls from now on a SL (Steam Locomotive) runs across my terminal.3 -

So awesome to see 112 of my 400 steam titles, including some of the AAA ones work on my new Linux installation.2

I've been playing this really awesome game where you have to use code to manipulate the world around you to solve the puzzles.
It's awesome, colorful, and has been my obsession for the last couple of days.
The game is called "One Dreamer"
Summary: Manipulate the world around you by editing source code in an adventure game about a burnt out indie game developer's quest to fulfill a lifelong dream.
Honestly, even the summary doesn't do this game justice in what it's been able to give. It's so well done.
Also Steam link, if you're even remote interested. I figured the crowd here might enjoy it, even for it's novelty.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/...
Also demo if you don't want to spend money. A little less polished than the main game, but gets the point across well.

Steam Winter Sale is on, and I just got myself Dark Souls III.
Done downloading, game started and....
*dies within first 3 minutes*6 -
I just realised that I've been experiencing a lot of stress and frustration over the last couple of months. I also realised that these feelings of dread and existential anxiety stem from my heavy use of Ubuntu. So I ended another agonizing 3 hours of trying-to-get-internet-access-again-so-I-can-get-some-fucking-work-done and managed to blow off some steam without causing too much property damage. Then I sat down and thought about it. And you know what? I hate Ubuntu.
With Window$ I can at least get some work done without having to write my own network drivers because the current ones do not function when the day of month is a prime number or some shit.15 -
So i have been helping people on the Steam forums for a game in Beta and today i got someone having a go at me for it.
WHAT THE FLYING FUCK, I WILL BE GETTING DEATH THREATS FOR HELPING AN ELDERLY WOMAN NEXT!!!14 -
So...my first experience with Scrum. How many fucking energy and productivity draining meetings can you squeeze in to two weeks?!!!! Agile? Hahaha. Don't get me started! Leave me alone and let me get some work done!4

Quarantine and unemployment gave me opportunities to do side projects, here is another one I’ve done recently and I think you guys will like it
It is an image mosaic that preserves features based on color gradient, and tries to use as many photos as possible instead of just repeatedly using same picture over and over.
Here is the link: https://github.com/txstc55/...
For those who care about my minesweeper game, I’m working on submitting it to steam and make it a free game.2 -
Bossman kept giving me a new “high priority” every month. Which would’ve been fine except for the fact that the prior month’s “high priority” was always a type that needed several months to come to full fruition. So he was constantly pulling the rug out from under me just as I was starting to gather steam and make progress. Also, he was begrudgingly paying me only half of the market salary for my job title in my locale. Would have loved to have paid me less and worked me twice as hard. I endured about 9 months of that and then I quit. Now my job is the exact opposite. Paid nearly twice as much with no micromanaging and plenty of time to work on my projects.1

So I have this 13 year old cousin who's pretty determined to follow my footsteps as a developer someday. He really likes gaming and all internet stuffs. His future plans makes me happy since I may finally have a relative that is a developer. But darn it! He's kinda weird coz he still throws tanrums. One of his major tantrums(which happened again last night) is that he wants the wireless Karaoke machine to be turned off because he thinks that it's slowing down the internet. It was his sister's birthday party and the guests are partying. I've told him many times that the signal for the karaoke is different from that of the router which has nothing to do with the internet slowing down. It must be caused by q device that is updating some apps or whatever. We live in the philippines and our internet provider is quite fast but it has this stupid fair usage policy that caps our bandwidth to a minimum speed if we reach a certain amount of data usage. Since he goes to youtube everyday in 480 and 720p, I explained it to him that it was one of the causes.
Last night, I almost got triggered because I wanted him to believe about the wifi being different to that of the karaoke machine's radio and that it is not connected to the wifi and not using data. I also told him about different kinds of wireless signals which I studied as a Software Engineering student back then and yet he still doesnt believe me. And what almost triggered me is that i saw his steam client updating while watching youtube. I told him that was it. But instead of agreeing, he refused to believe me and just told me that steam is just updating and he's not downloading anything which made me think why he keeps going to youtube, because...he's not downloading. Oh God! Good luck to this kid. 😂5 -
I'm talking about you JON!!! Goddamn, I don't fucking know what a .bnk file is and why the fuck it's in your steam files!

I've fallen in love with the EPIC games launcher, it not only shows you detailed information about download, read and write speeds, but also the distribution of operations! Never have seen that in a game launcher, steam blizzard origin etc should take notes!11

I came first in a 48 hour 4x person gamejam with a game idea in 6 hours with 3x people.
Some info: I had an idea as soon as the topic went live, told the team this is the idea (button masher), we are going to do it in unity (at the time I was working at a studio that used UE4.x), and I'll also make a custom controller using an old keyboard to make it more fun. Ended up coming first place and won a nice bottle of champagne each, and at no point did we over stretch. Nice clean project with a good night's sleep in-between. The team was me (dev), an artist and a technical designer.
That was my first start to finish use of unity and C#, and now I exclusively use unity and make games for Xbox One and Steam.3 -
Just wanted to spread awareness about a Windows 10 devRant app called "devRant Unofficial". It's literally a 1:1 clone of the Android and iOS apps.
Maybe the devRant team could contact the dev for come co-operation and get an official app for Windows 10 with little to none effort?
It works on mobile and PC so I can easily use it on my Lumia and Surface. I know most of you guys here use macOS, but for us Windows devs, having an official app would be cool.
I know Valve talked to an unofficial developer of the Steam app for Windows Phone, and gave him approval for removing the "unofficial" tag. I suggest you guys do the same.
Happy 2016's death everyone, and sorry for the long and boring post!13 -
I hope this is not illegal content, as I don't want to "Advertise" here but would like to share my first game on Steam with the community, as I am really proud of it.
There's a free playtest soon and dev opinions are much appreciated! Let me know guys what you think. https://store.steampowered.com/app/...14 -
How's your internet connection?
I've got home and my net broke any possible speed records.
(NAJWIĘCEJ - top speed)3 -
I have felt that WSL is misnamed. It should be LSW. But anyway, I would rather have a Windows environment in Linux than the other way around.
Which is interesting because Steam is coming really close to having this for games. The more I learn about Steam working to make Windows games run on Linux the more impressed I get. Steam actually told companies to NOT develop games natively for Linux because those ports tend to be less well maintained. Meanwhile Steam is putting tremendous effort into getting the Windows native games running well in Linux. Now I want to try more of my Steam games in Linux!19 -
Microtransactions are ruining the AAA gaming industry. I have always liked a good fighting game. So I looked at Street Fighter 6. Base game is $60, better version is more, bestest version is way more. Plus from reading reviews the fucking game is riddled with microtransactions.
What happened to buying a fucking game and not feeling like you got ripped off? When you bought the fucking game you got the whole fucking game.
I am disgusted with what these big names are doing. Ruining a once less sketchy industry.
I have even seen games that start out good. Then after a few patches they introduce the microtransaction bullshit. The Conan games are like that. The main complaint is adding this bullshit for base game items.
I wonder how they think this is good for their player base. They just fired the dude at Unity over trying to fuck over customers. Of course the company cannot be trusted so a lot of bigger labels are jumping ship to other engines.
What kinda pisses me off is I will try and find a decent game on Steam and look and look and all I find is garbage. How did Steam turn into such a trash heap? I won't touch an EA game (which is where that CEO from Unity came from). It is too bad because I really liked Mass Effect.
tldr - gaming has turned into shit.8 -
People talk about how they would love to switch to Linux, but cannot, as they claim that gaming lives on Windows. This may have been the case ten years ago but it isn't now.
And further, Microsoft is working hard to break steam, humble, gog, and any other delivery systems they do not control. Such anti-consumer behavior should not be tolerated, let alone rewarded. One result of this is that almost every indie game that comes out now has native Linux support within months, if not on day 1.
The only weak spot is AAA games. But as AAA games and mobile games begin to converge, in terms of the subscription/microtransaction models they're both moving toward, with very few exceptions, I personally don't think I'm really missing anything when I see a Windows-only game for $60 with no Linux support.
And if I really want, I can play un-wine-able Windows games through parsec, though that's getting rarer and rarer all the time.11 -
Wanted to play a new game this WE.
It's quite demanding so decide to boot into Windows, because NVIDIA driver support.
Haven't booted Windows 10 in a month so I start early in the morning to do the updates.
After about 3 hours all Windows and steam updates were installed and I finally start the game.
I play for a couple of hours until suddenly - blue screen
I rebooted and was faced with another blue screen right after the Windows logo. Didn't even reach the login screen.
So here I am with a Windows install that is stuck in a boot - blue screen - boot - system repair - blue screen loop and a shitty gaming WE.
Thanks Microsoft!12 -
I'm very proud to share my steam game with you. The demo is playable for free.
Please share your feedback or any question about the development with me.

According to Steam Stats, Ethiopia has downloaded 1.5 terabytes of games in the past 7 days. Madagascar has downloaded 5.2
China is in the lead with 79 PB, followed closely by America with 60.11 -
When people think you're addicted to gaming, but you're just really keen on developing that next feature. People just don't understand the underappreciated life of an add-on developer. We're shit on by the game developer, and users alike.2

Playing videogames!
Mostly indie games these days, since I have hundreds of them in my Steam library and haven't played most of them. Last week I tried Factorio and now I'm obsessed with it.7 -

The knowledge base for fixing stupid shit in Windows 10 is abysmal. I had a slow login that seemed to be progressively worse. I had searched in the past about this. The suggestions ranged from getting an SSD to reinstalling Windows. None of them addressed the issue. I had removed some startup programs thinking that might be the issue. It was not. I finally found some obscure mention by some guy that said: delete the user temp folder. So I did that. Now it takes almost no time to login. I think the only delay is the steam stuff in the background.
Of course all the official Microsoft suggestions were total shit.15 -
I sometimes feel Windows keeps on pushing useless updates, just to mess with the users. Change a single line of code (or rather just add a comment) and push the entire module as new.
How can it be everytime I boot on my windows device, it has an update.
EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. TIME.
Same goes for you steam.2 -
You know Steam? So I wanted to create something like Steam, but for mods for SimRacing games like F1 Challenge, rFactor, Assetto Corsa , Project Cars...

I found a post in the depths of the steam forum about borderlands 2,that if you open the steam-overlay's browser while in-game, go to youtube, start a video and paused it, you would get +10-15% FPS. Tried it and it worked.
I can't even start to imagine the causal chain that causes such a... bug? feature?4 -

I just had to walk a friend of mine through the process of buying a steam game. Holy shit it was a nightmare.3
-
Looks like Steam is launching a beta of a modified version of Wine, so windows games can be played on Linux too.
I'm seriously considering going back to Ubuntu now.3 -
Have a positive mindset. If the work in general sucks, you can almost always find some micro or nano task that you can focus on. Then you find something more fun to work with and switch job. But until then, stay positive and be happy. And use devrant to blow off steam.
-
I had a friend who wanted to make a social network and Steam-like gaming platform with "near impenetrable" security in around 2 months from scratch. He still wants to do it. Maybe he should think.2

This is just a bunch of things I needed to get out that I’ve been holding in for a while now.
Recently I’ve found myself In this state where I feel so depressed, lazy, and just pressured to program in general. I feel like it comes from me dismissing my abilities a lot of the time and I get demotivated to do stuff but at the same time when I do sit down and code I get distracted so easily, I can get work done but I just feel like I’m everywhere.
I want to apply for positions but I’m in this duality where I both feel like I can or can’t do it, I feel like wherever I apply to will not be accepting to people that don’t have a big degree or a ton of work experience and that I’ll get fucked on it. I’m fucking anxious that if I do get a job they will be like “hey fucking do X” and I will have no fucking clue how to even do X, and I’ve had people tell me that they know for a fact I can do it but I still fucking can’t believe it because I just completely doubt myself because I have failed at things like learning certain frameworks or failing to make the things I want and having to turn to simpler projects first because I’m too overwhelmed by the scale and I didn’t do any thinking about it before hand.
I don’t know if I’m making sense at all, I always write out rants like this and I always just erase them because I fucking hate whining like this but I need to let it out before I go more crazy I’ve been holding so much in for a long time now and it’s not been good.
I just over all feel terrible, anxious, and unproductive and I want it to stop.5 -
Dev of 15 years here. All my career historically started and evolved/revolved around Microsoft in one way or the other, so was my exposure to only DOS and the Windows as a child and growing up.
Like already discussed in multiple rants here, I was one of those naturally Windows -favoring ppl through all my life. That is not to say I didn't try Linux here and there, for hosting of personal projects, as one usually does. But it never quite stuck with me as a personal daily driver, mainly because all I ever needed for personal use was a browser, discord, and Steam/GOG/Epic Games store for gaming (work-wise I always had and still have company provided laptops which are OF COURSE Windows powered)
Anyway, maybe you can see where I'm going with this... I recently gave Nobara Linux a go (Glorious Eggroll's Fedora flavor, with some custom kernel patches) and I have to say, not thinking of going back to Windows at all.
Just a few thoughts on comparing two sets of experiences with Win vs Nobara
- Win definitely feels more sluggish
- Nobara's default desktop env was Gnome 42 with some extensions pre-enabled. I dove right into hacking/customizing it to my tastes and it looked glorious. Never would have achieved this customization with Win
- I was using RDP to remote into my work laptop from my personal desktop setup with Windows and I still successfully do so with Remmina now in Linux
- A week ago I dove deeper and installed Awesome window manager as a UI and mh boy does this feel intimidating at first. But then the allure of having nice window managing experience was too strong, and 15 years of coding do help with just seeing a new language and kinda feeling at home instantly (Lua language for AwesomeWM customization/themes). Fast forward a week and now I'm sitting happily with 3 monitor setup, one of them vertical, all properly auto aligned with arandr on startup, variety+wal for wallpaper auto circling and applying a theme out of main wallpaper colors every so often (+wrote a script to put those main colors into my RGB peripherals via OpenRGB)
- Gaming. I still game, Steam Deck from steam gave me all the confidence to set up Linux gaming that I needed. I think I am now properly versed in all things Wine/Proton/Lutris/Bottles/Heroic Games Launcher, you name it. Recently finished Cyberpunk 2077.
ANYWAY, thank you for coming to my Linux appreciation TED talk. It's amazing. -
Opening the bag...
Stuck my nose in it. Deeeeeeep breath.
Better than sex.
Taking the scale, getting the right amount.
Feeding the grinder, thinking about whom to kill... Watching get them torn to pieces, shredded bit by bit.
Preheating the iron, getting the water up to temperature.
Filling up the espresso can, turning it on.
Boiling fresh espresso.
Nothing's sexier than the sound of the steam and the smell of fresh grinded and brewed espresso.
Good Sunday.9 -
Someone at Steam is having a bad day.
And I am having one too because I can't play planet zoo without Steam :(5 -
Game reviews on Steam are now like, “Not recommended. Seemed like a good game, but the story is linear and there’s really nothing to do.” …with approximately 180hrs of playtime on record for a $25 game.
Do us all a favor and please continue to stare at your phone while walking into oncoming traffic.8 -
When all your friends (which there ain't much of them) are out doing their own stuff, gf and family at the other side of the country, I'm glad devRant is here keeping me occupied and sane... and of course Steam too (but it'll always be 2nd)...2
-
Not claiming any originality here... I'm just happy to finally have included it. We'll see if it passes PR review - might make my coworkers "steam" a little (pun intended) ;)2

Got ncmpcpp/cava/mpd working! (if you're wondering why it's ubuntu, just read a few rants ago :'^> ) and loving it. i gues i'll just open this up for people to post rices or any sort of pretty config. i still shill arch, just not if you like steam and have an nvidia graphics card! i'm in school and i don't really have time to sit down and learn what i broke and how to fix it, even if its a minor issue.8

So, I work in a game development studio, right?
We're trying to launch the title on as many platforms as reasonable, because as a social VR app we're kinda rowing upstream.
So far, Steam and Oculus have been fairly reasonable, if oddly broken and inconsistent.
Enter store 3.
Basically no in-game transaction support (our asking prompted them to *start* developing it. No, it's not very complete). No patch-update system (You want an update? Gotta download the whole fsckin' thing!). No beta-testing functionality for most of their stuff ("Just write the code like the example, it will work, trust us!"). No tools besides the buggy SDK (Wanna upload that new build? Say hello to this page in your web browser!).
So, in other words: Fun.
We've been trying to get actively launched for two months now. Keep in mind that the build has been up on Steam and Oculus for over a year and half a year (respectively), so the actual binary functionality is, presumably fine.
The best feedback we get back tends to be "Well, when we click the Launch button it crashes, so fail."
Meanwhile we're going back and forth, dealing with other-side-of-the-world timezone lag, trying to figure out what is so different from their machines as ours. Eventually we get them to start sending logs (and no, Windows Event logs are not sufficient for GAMES, where did you even get that idea????) except the logs indicate that the program is getting killed so terribly that the engine's built-in crash handler can't even kick in to generate memory dumps or even know it died.
All this boils down to today, where I get a screenshot of their latest attempt.
I just can't even right now.5 -

I've been away from devRant (and other social media) for a few days because I thought i needed to concentrate on a project that I'm currently working on.
I just realized that I need this, I really need to rant! There is just too much to rant about. Like how fuckin annoying tomcat is, (don't ask me, someone is paying for me to use it), or how eclipse is happily hugging over 1gb of my ram, ( again don't ask), meanwhile vscode is doing just the same thing (debugging a tomcat server) with less than 300mb! There's so much to be annoyed about that I truly don't know how I was getting along before devRant.2 -
Windows is a god damn abomination of a OS. Fucking let me download that one game from the shitty developers that add EAC for no reason. Fucking stop hogging every resource and let steam work. Fucking stop crashing like wtf how is this considered stable. Stop fucking downloading updates. You amount to nothing than playing games made by cunts. There is no valuable information on this system and I have no problems nuking it all.11

EA can suck my inches. Fucking deprecated and greedy business practices. Now I'm fucking told me to play the game later, because "too many computers have accessed this accounts version of a shitty game that crashed my pc 3 times. Please try again later."
Stupid cunts, have you ever heard of a vpn? Or maybe listened to the people complaining about this issue since 2017. On top of that you apparently rendered geforce now useless with this error.
Good fucking lord, I haven't even mentioned origin, the big pile of shit, yet. The download functionality you praise like God's cum doesn't even hold out half an hour before it freezes, together while the whole UI. You cannot like your games with a steam account, so you'd have to pay for a game you already own.
...And a whole lot of other issues I probably haven't encountered yet.
It's more lucrative to sell this shitty account and then buy the fucking game I want to play on steam. I have a feeling that would be about the best option I have.
I'm tired of this shit, I just wanna play some games with friends. I did not play to be spit on my face by some corporate wankers1 -
Years later the supposed 'cancer' that is linux: a fully featured, and more and more polished FREE operating system running Microsoft development tools, a rich GUI which does away with the crappy windows 98 taskbar, multiple virtual desktops, and steam !25

There is a new phishing site going around called "rogstrike.com" that is being spread by Steam DMs.
Infected asks victim to "vote for their team" and in order to do that, you need to login with steam. The steam login part is sketchy af, litterally spawns a fake new window in the same tab. Doesn't matter what OS you use, it's always Win 10 styled. Lol.
I reported on twitter and via email, i'll see what they will do.4 -
I miss the old steam sales where you could bag some really good deals if you just payed some attention. Nowadays though they just develop some rinse and repeat novel game, event or something and the deals are predictable. Max 50% if the game still got some steam (like stardew Valley) and 66-90 if the game is fading into obscurity (Turing Test)
-
I've just found out that the plastic cups that I have been using for almost 2 years at the office release a toxic steam when used for hot beverages.5
-
I recently made a meme of our nightmare client (only posted internally of course), and a coworker even made her into a Slack emoji. How do you let off steam when you're developing for the devil?4

Found out today that someone who started game dev with a game jam I started in university has a top 10 game on steam!1

No, Steam support, I don't wanna see your copy-paste shit, I just want you to fix your broken SSL on one of your server...
I hate writing to support so much (doesn't have to be Steam). I just want to see a human approach for once, but all I get is copypasta bullshit.2 -
Do you all remember the dark ages of DVDs when honest customers made a worse deal than pirates because legitimate media was packed with unskippable advertising and PSAs about piracy?
Well, looks like video game publishers are on their best way to recreate that mistake. Why do games nowadays need to be forcefed with storage-consuming, unappealing and technically nonessential launchers that all look and do the same? And why for God's sake do very old and offline-only games need to go through this sodomizing procedure?
prime example: GTA 3 was released back in 2001 and capable of running on Windows 98SE/2000/XP. There's a Steam-only release out there that requires you to install community-made patches if you want the game to run smoothly on modern hardware. Steam itself as a requirement for this atrocity to even launch the executable dropped support for XP more than two years ago. If you'd wanted to play this game on original hardware, you would rely on a real DVD that was made back then, but there are even better options if you know what I mean.
When a multimillion-dollar industry relies on communities of volunteering enthusiasts to make its products work, it won't receive a trace of my empathy when customers and non-customers alike try to download their games from more reliable and honest sources.2 -
Best part of the holidays for me has been the steam sales. I grabbed "TIL-100" and "Infinifactory". Both of them are wonderful logic games, and til-100 has you programming in assembly. It's the most challenging yet fun way I've ever programed!2

Today I fucked Up by making friend install Linux when he doesn't even know what OS is.
Friend's Windows 7 broke. Unbootable & unfixable. I told him to reinstall. He has no idea how so he told me he will rent a PC (apparently that's a thing) until he buys a new one (he wanted it anyways). I told him it's bullshit to rent for PC when yours is totally ok only without OS.
He agreed and that's where I fucked Up. I told him how to make bootable flash disks(it was pain to get some info from him tho..) and he said he downloaded cracked Win7.. I told him it's suicide to use cracked OS for MANY fucking reasons. He agreed and I told him to install Ubuntu.... I thought it's easy that even my grandma could use it...... Well, apparently I was, in technical terms, "FUCKING WRONG"(all caps cuz tech terms).
He wasn't even able to Google how to install Steam on Ubuntu(apt install steam?) ... Constantly asking me "well and what should i write to Google?" And other shit..
I Always woke up to messages From him like "This shit doesn't work I'mma uninstall it" and I Always responed in one command or first Google result and it suddenly started to work.
After 2 days he gave up and is using cracked Win7. Can't wait for his reaction when I pwn him on nearest LAN party 😂 Maybe he will reconsider using cracked OS.
Anyway I learn from my Mistake. Just fuck me...4 -
So today I spent most of the day "gaming", basically trying seeing what my PC could handle. It was very disappointing and realized I wasted a while day.
1.Somehow the graphics settings even set to Ultra didn't feel realistic.
2. The games take a long time to download even with Steam... 50-60GB... WTF....
The largest game I ever played on PC before was maybe 4-8GB... (DVDs)
And yes I installed Steam and bought a game (Project Cars 2). The videos looked pretty nice I'm videos but not so in game... (Waiting for refund now)
3. I downloaded some other demos but the setup time and cutscenes took too much time
4. Controls for some games seen to have been ported from console (they were mapped to XBOX buttons?).
I should've stuck to my original plan... Programming, no games
But I think one thing if certain... I will never understand console games (the ones with stories/plots). I'm sticking with arcade or the ones I can cheat thru at most.7 -
Discovering that Steam exists on Ubuntu and being able to install and play Hotline Miami 2 increases my doubts on keeping a Windows partition on my computers. All I need now is to find a way to play WoW and / or LoL, and I'll be truely free :o7

Fuck you Steam, just fuck you and your price politics.
I have a Swiss and one Russian Steam account. I have on my Swiss account over 450 Games and on the russian one around 4.
I have a friend in Russia and to play some games with him, I need a russian account.
Guess what? Since the last change to Steam Shop I cant use my Swiss Credit Card anymore to buy games in Russia.
Now when I want to test a game first on the russian account and when it's good to buy it after on my main Account, I can't.
Why should I pay for a game in Early Access the full price, when the game is bad and will be abadoned in a half year?
Sure they are some good early access games, which I payd the full price for (Switzerland has the highest Steam Game prices). As example ARK or Battlegrounds. I love these games and like to support the Devs.
But I get really angry when I have to pay for a Game which is worth 5 $ and sold in my Country for 20 $ and will be unsupported after a year.
Really fuck you Valve and Steam 🖕🏻🖕🏻😡
Atleast refund the people the money, when the game is abadoned! But sure, you're just in for a Cash Grab...4 -

So, here I am browsing steam for something new to play.
Thanks kwilliams for a solid 30 hours of gameplay 🤘
But anyway, I was just scrolling through and came across and old gem.

It's not High Def or modern, although it does 1920x1080, but damn it's a trip down nostalgic lane.2 -

My list of open PRs didn't descrease much since the last Rant, when I went through almost all and updated them.
Still 77 open ones.
On the other hand, my PR for the SteamCMD GUI that I had just finished was taken almost immediately!

ok. been going full steam since December with 1 day off since. managing teams, review designs, designing, prototyping, code reviewing, mentoring, and doing project. management. i get that it's a "flat" org structure but hire proper PMs and BAs instead of trying to pinch pennies. all the while, i see marketing with deeeeeeep pockets spending money on anything like mommy and daddy are funding their spring break getaway. i need time to disconnect and recharge my spirit.2

Fucking hate my internet, ubisoft and steam regularly have a free weekend where a game can be played for free during the weekend. Currently The Crew 2 is free to play for this weekend. Its been downloading for 24 hours and its only at 23%. In my experience that means I can play it on Sunday evening for about two hours and have no internet the rest of the weekend.3

I just need to vent about how frustrating and terrible Windows is.
It almost seems like consistentsy and attention to detail are completely foreign concepts to Microsoft. Everything from simple text selection (WHY DOES A DOUBLE CLICK INCLUDE THE TRAILING SPACE) to using advanced software feels like a chore.
Any sympathizers here? What problems do you need to vent about when trying to navigate your OS?
FWI I'm not a Mac or Linux user, so I have the joy of using Windows at home. I wish I could switch, but I prefer full access to my Steam library so I'm stuck with this option.rant microsoft venting windows 10 windows sucks windows 10 sucks why would you do that bad design windows7 -
OMG. This weekend, there is Rainbow Six Siege free to play on Steam. I have a desktop PC, but I can't get it to work. Tried Ubi support, but they give shit. So...I was hoping, I could finally try this crap game on my laptop. And here we go...
Normally, I use Linux. Only Linux, because Windows 10 on my laptop is extremely fucking painful. I knew it's going to be torture to install that game on it, but whatever.
OK, firstly, I was surprised, that Windows booted in just about 1 minute. I was like wtf just happened. Everything seemed to be fine and working. I downloaded uPlay, installed it and tried to install the game. Just to be clear, this rant is written from Linux again. And why?
Because FUCKING WINBLOWS desides to FUCKING UPDATE WIFI DRIVERS. 1 minute - internet works, second fucking minute - WIFI IS FUCKING DOWN. Thanks fucking pussy Gates. I really like you. And use this crap daily. Holy shit I would die...2 -
How do guys using Windows survive , like its getting hanged on some firefox tabs and a steam window , its so frustrating .5

Finally, fucking finally I fixed a damn bug that seems to be freaking popular on asus machines. This damn bug captures the fn keys needed to regulate the screen brightness.
All tools that display your keypresses didn't find them at all and I had a pretty tough time find the source of problem.
You can create as many arch memes as you want but you cannot deny that the they are truly MVPs imo.
Today I also:
* Fixed and refactored a bit of code
* added shortcuts for volume and keyboard backlight control
* Installed lots of fonts
* Got Steam to run
* Found out the meaning behind the Arch linux
* Felt disgusting using windows 10. Learned that 10 stands for the number of minuts before I must vomit 🤢
* Learned a bunch of linux stuff
But most importantly

Seriously wtf? I wanted to play a new game. So I found Elden Ring on sale. But the first 30 minutes in the game is video/cutscenes so far. How can that reasonably be considered game play if it counts against the 2 hours of trial period? I don't play Skyrim in 3rd person, but I like that I can switch in and out to look at things.
I didn't like the feel of the combat system and I didn't like that it locked the 3rd person view. I hate playing in 3rd person as it is nearly always janky. How can that game be that popular with no option for 1st person?
I must be getting old. If a game doesn't feel the way I like, I bail on it. It has been this way with the last 3 or 4 Steam games I tried. Is it me, or has gaming in general gone to shit? I want an RPG with simple open world aspects, a non locked storyline that you can do if you want, maybe a vast generated world, and the ability to build things. I like FFX, but it takes a while to unlock "do what you want mode". It has party/character development, but no building.
I feel like the 2 hour trial period is too short. Not enough time to give the game a chance. I would have stuck it out if it gave me more time. I bailed because of janky 3rd person. Not enough time to get used to it imo.
I would rather play older titles I can trust to be fixable than new games. I am seeing people who play Skyrim come back to playing Skyrim after trying Starfield for a month. That is not a good sing for Starfield.
Maybe I just know what I want and have no time to be fucking around with new takes on game play. It is funny. I have 3 or 4 games I bought on sale from Steam that I have never played. Or played very little. I played Wild Hunt for like an hour and never played again. I didn't refund that one because I will get around to it, but I don't know when.6 -
So I have a pet peeve to talk about here, I'm excited for the Atari box as I have some inside information that is officially confirmed about it (unfortunately am not allowed to talk about it :-C) and I see people out there saying it is "an underpowered Linux steam machine)...
How the fuck are people coming to this conclusion when the specs, OS or anything technical about it haven't even been released yet?!
Why must people immediately assume that because it's not a standard windows PC it must be a piece of shit?
Boggles my mind that so many people can be so defensive and go on the offence without knowing anything.
Just so I can clarify, I'm a console gamer, Linux lover yet still develop for windows and the like so this isn't a biased rant and I know people will look at this, see the word Linux and go on the attack... So... Just... Chill?4 -
I have a gaming laptop with a 125gb ssd and 1 TB secondary drive. Ssd has just 20 GB free.
I wanna dual boot windows 10 and arch. Most of the secondary drive is full of steam games. Win 10 for gaming and arch is for projects.
What's a good way to partition the drives for arch? I can't guess how much space either will need in the future. And what do I do with the other drive?7 -
I look forward to Friday's Nerf dart battles in the office. A great way to blow off the steam that built up during the week.3

So it’s been a few months now since I first started learning to code and I am losing steam FAST. For the first couple months I couldn’t tear myself away from my screen and now I’m having a hard time forcing myself to even open my computer!!
What are some things you’ve done to get yourself past that rut?7 -
I just played a few old maps I and a few steam friends made and it brought back the feelings. I had to open a few maps in hammer (Level editor) and see myself around.
I completely forgot the controls in hammer and had difficulties to recall how to import assets from a custom map. Everything was clunky.
It kind of makes me sad when I look back. I wish I could still map - but the school will start tomorrow and I guess I have no time for that. The same thing happened with playing the piano. Once I reached a certain skill level, I stopped although I loved it. I stopped progressing.
Unreal engine isn't fully my thing, I feel uncomfortable working in it, though I still want to make games. I found myself not opening it for a month or so.1 -
JavaScript: Default exports vs. named exports
Who gives a fuck, honestly? I used to think there was merit to one over the other, but I'm running out of steam to have these silly debates.4 -
It has made life living like hell around muggles who think "it should not be that hard.. can you..."
NO! GO FUCK YOURSELF.
"Can you make me a POS system? A guy told me it should not take you more than a night. I will pay you (enough to buy Age of Empires 2 on Steam sale) as well."
NO GO LEARN TO CODE YOURSELF IN ONE NIGHT AND BUILD YOUR POS(piece of shit) YOURSELF IN THE NEXT NIGHT.3 -
if Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7 and I don't have a legit copy anyway, why is it always updating.
i boot into Windows once every 3 months to play sumn on steam or just remind myself of the suffering that I once knew, and there's always all these updates.4 -
I just want to thank Steam for making steam guard key in all caps. So I dont need to fucking think about if its uppercase i or lowercase L. It would be much better if they do it on all captcha services or just fucking dont use i l o and 0 characters. These are pisses me off. They are so fucking annoying.1

Fried two devices today by simply connecting them to a power source.
Changed nothing in the circuitry, no shorts due to solder residues (a simple modification was made), no changes in the input parameters. Check.
The afromentioned devices should have only minor HW changes compared to a previous version I'm working with and as far as I can see absolutely nothing which should cause the damn microcontroller to release smoke like a steam train. (All right, a very miniature steam train.)
So the only significant difference might be the firmware which I didn't check yet but will tomorrow. Not my code and the corresponding IDE just basically sucks. Yay.
On the other hand, the Software part finally feels like I'm getting somewhere. It seems just ... to work. Very suspicious.
Feeling ambivalently frustrated and relieved at the same time. Sigh.7 -
So, there was that post about Valve that send your steam password through an email. I changed my password to see if it was true (I couldn't believe it). And I had to do phone verification....
I thought for a sec it wouldn't stop, but yeah atleast I got the message.5 -
will move to linux again, this time I hope will be the last. I'm motivated from a rant in which some guys discussed about proton having a lot of tittles supported in steam
got rise of nations from steam working in laptop with freshly installed linux mint 19.3 . (same game does not run in my win 10)
will use same distro in my gaming pc and hopefully will keep on linux for a while 🤞
wish me luck9 -
So I came from the Portal modding scene. And I know most other ones who did similar stuff.
Now there was a cool looking upcoming free mod and I somehow came in touch with the lead Dev. Now somehow I managed to get into the developer team and me and my girlfriend we're part of it. We got a level name and should start mapping it (TL;DR, we never finished one because we didn't know what to do).
I actually made a website for the mod. But sometime later we both left the team because the lead Dev (12 yo btw) was "hiring" (working for passion not money btw, that's fine in this case) everyone he got in touch with. They had no team structure just a huge list of people and a long story script. I'd guess the mod won't ever be done, although it has made it through steam greenlight (R.I.P greenlight). Just because they're not working on a team. -
A person asked me to look for parts to build a computer for her. She has a tiny budget and wants to play games. I asked what kind of games and she won't tell me more than "games from steam". She won't even give me an example. Also, she doesn't want to buy parts like the psu and housing used, but I already have problems fiting anything better than onboard graphics into this rediculous budget. Why are many people so ignorant?4

Our project manager is a past-retirement-age consultant who prefers to communicate the old-fashioned way, which is to physically pop in to my office asking questions about stuff that isn't even urgent and could easily be dealt with in jira or by e-mail FFS. Way to go disrupting a dev, break my flow and deprive me of my joy of working! He even says it himself: "May I disturb?" My answer is "No, but now that you already did, spit it out!" He's a nice and funny guy, I give him that. But I don't like this particular behaviour of his. I've complained to him directly and also to my boss, but to no avail. This is where devRant comes in, to let the steam out. Anyway, if I have it my way, we will definitely *not* be hiring the same consultant for our next project.2

My pc has this weird glitch where anytime I install or uninstall a Steam game my headset microphone (Logitech G933) mutes, and I can only unmute it again after a couple of seconds. It's been this way for the longest time (though not always) and I have not the slightest fucking clue what could be causing it. Anyone else ever heard of something like this?9

I hate the current state of internet based service providers. They are collecting so much data, it's scary and borderline stalking.
A simple search on Netflix changes ads shown by Google. I watch a lot of Japanese/Korean drama and now my ads are in Japanese. What the actual fuck.
I run windows 10 on my main rig because of steam and windows only games. One day I was searching for filezilla in windows search. Since it is now handled by the same UI as cortana, it searched it on the web too. So now I have ads related to ftp hosting in Japanese.
Sometimes I feel like just formatting my system and install debian on it. But those games man. May be I can live without them.
Can we bring back the internet from 2008. It was so much better back then.12 -
So, My usual dual boot setup is Linux(Dev stuff) and Windows(For gaming) and for Linux I always create different partition just to make sure I don't fuck up while removing Linux(mostly switching). So at one time I wanted to switch to CentOS and I accidentally deleted windows partition of C drive which had like 90+GB just for Steam....it was not Big loss but still it was pain downloading data for steam games.
-
Seriously, can we just all agree and fuck Epic Games? And also their shitty EAC. RIP Rocket League on Linux. What's next? Oh wait...there is almost nothing left...
The best thing how they act like their retarded Store is better than Steam. You can suck my dick idiots.7 -
So LUA injector to Payday 2 requires on Linux certain library (libcurl3). So you know, sudo apt install libcurl3 and there you go!
You would think.
Apparently while you do that, the installation of libcurl3, it completely nukes your Steam installation... For some reason.
Can some please explain me, what the hell just happened? Please?1 -
Yep....nothing wrong here.
Seems like a good time calculation.
Just Origin being Origin.
And that's when you know it time to go back to Steam :) -
Trying to play Warframe with my son. Why do I spend 3 hours updating Steam and/or Warframe and troubleshooting drivers and settings for every 1 hour of play?1
-
You know you should tidy up some space when your ssd has more space left then your hard drive
I still have a second hard drive, but I'm too lazy to move either my steam games or my programs over there...
The time will hit me when the last GB has been used1 -
Day 2 of being a Linux (Mint Cinnamon) user. What I like the most is that there's a solution or customisation available for every problem and it's usually straightforward. And let's not forget that you don't have to fight the OS for folder permissions when you're in admin mode.
Migrated my data over from my old drive, installed Steam, got some work done. I like Cinnamon a lot. Need more RAM but that has been years in the making for me.
Just need to get Wine running and find some more cool open source games and tools and I'll be good to go. -
That moment when you are working on your game. Then you remember all those games you bought cheap on steam but can't enjoy cause you don't have a good enough PC. Then you spend the next hour looking up PC components for a gaming PC that you can't afford and feel sad. And then you realise you haven't coded much anything in your own game. Why procrastination why?1
-
This is for people looking to switch to Linux but on the fence due to game support.
If you have a steam account, you can go to http://steam.bravehost.com and our in your public profile ID, and it'll tell you all the games in your library that support Linux.
For games you want to buy in the future, check http://www.steamdb.info/linux. I know the steam store lists by Linux too, but IMO it is too slow and visually noisy to see what you want.
Deus Ex Mankind Divided surprisingly works on Linux from what I see and so do other games I actually play, so I will likely take the plunge sooner than I thought!9 -
Was checking what my coworker was up to. He was given a computer to fix by another coworker and the PC belonged to his child.
”Oh I just uninstalled Steam. It’s a bad software with loads of viruses that slow down your computer!”3 -
Guys, I have something to say. I've used Arch Linux since probably a couple months after I started using Linux. But today, I'm going to install Fedora on my PC. It's my gaming rig at this point (that really needs some upgrades), and it seems like Steam breaks on Arch every week.
With that system, at this point I want something I can just install, do some tweaking, and go.
Anyone have any other distro suggestions for a gaming rig?7 -
It's amazing how companies like Autodesk and Adobe see Linux as some "toy". When we talk about Linux we are talking about a professional workstation. My entire company uses Linux (currently Fedora 39) on its workstations, and all of our servers use FreeBSD. Not because it's free, but because it proves to be better than the alternatives to what we produce. We pay for licenses for JetBrains, BricsCAD, MATLAB and I still happily pay STEAM to play my Civilization, Doom Eternal, CS2 and I use Proton to continue my adventures in Diablo and Star Craft, all PAID. Adobe and Autodesk, be ashamed and instead of talking about market share, admit that you do not have competence.7
-
Steam hone number support. I lost my phone and forgot my number, and to change the number on the steam account, you need the old number.
-
Been working for almost a year, really hard, on a serious attempt to make GUI development on Python fun, easy, flexible, with a full array of widgets and do it in a way that complete beginners can understand and the professionals will enjoy because it's so easy. My solution is called PySimpleGUI.
My 'rant' is the downvoting and slandering happening on places like Reddit is done by people that haven't tried to use it and most haven't installed it. Yet, they're experts in how sh*tty it is.... even though nothing stated as being a problem is truthful. When asked for more direct feedback on what's wrong, how it can be improved, the active rant threads go silent.
I've never been on devRant, so I hope I'm doing the right thing here! I'm just blowing off steam, not trying to start some holy war.2 -
Been working on an issue for the past 3 days. For a gamer, I didn't even start Steam even once. Now, after so much frustration, barely any sleep and too many mindfucks, I finally figured it out and commit my code. Now I can watch Suicide Squad in peace. :')
-
TL;DR: There was a Steam bug and I fixed it locally.
Some months ago, Steam had the problem, that if you tried to add anything from the Steam Workshop to a collection, you would get an error like "Process failed: 2", while it was loading the collection list.
I realized, that it would work, but there was a bug in the JS (Watched the network tab in chrome while trying to add to collection). I searched after "Process failed" in each js file and after 30 seconds I found the buggy if. It said something like
if (json.success != 2) {
//do error
} else {
//show list
}
After I changed that if condition to
if (false)...
it worked perfectly, although it would make problems if there would be a server side error.2 -
So... Apparently you can do ctrl+backspace in steam's password field and it deletes up to the last space instead of deleting the whole password... Nice.2

I bought a $1 Steam game called Square Brawl some 5 years ago. It's a minimalistic arena battle with forgiving physics, diverse and satisfying weapons and a geometric design based on squares.
It's among my favourite couch multiplayer games, but the programming is shit. The resolution is weird, the launcher is some default config screen that came with the game engine, with a controller it's tricky to avoid picking a second color by accident which spawns a ghost player that is jointly controlled by the AI and the player. Sometimes the game spawns 10 copies of everyone, all of which you control at the same time. Getting stuck inside walls is commonplace.
On an unrelated note, I'm making a minimalistic arena battle with forgiving physics, diverse and satisfying weapons and a geometric design based on squares. It's gonna be FOSS and web-based. I haven't settled on a name yet but I think Tetragon Tussle might be good.6 -
Apparently I don't have a problem with lack of games... Over the years I bought a lot of Humble Bundles which I apparently never fully redeemed...
I just redeemed some today while getting one with Dirt 4... (was actually planning to buy that yesterday from Steam just to test) I now have 54 games in the Library...6 -
How did your quest into the dev world look like? That's mine:
First time: Age 12, was in a C++ evening class for like 2 weeks, I undetstood nothing.
Second time: Age 16-18
Fiddled with scripts for steam games and jailbroken my iPhone while fiddling with aystem configs. Nothing major.
Third time: Age 19, learned Python in a Cybersecurity course. Failed miserably because the tutors were shit, thought I hated programming.
Fourth time: Age 21, developed a lot of scripts in my sysadmin job, one of them needed a GUI so I leanred C# and WPF. Enjoyed it so much I eventually enrolled in a Java 10 month course.
Fifth time: Now, age 22, learning Android and Fullstack javascript by myself. Enjoying every moment.
I still work as a sysadmin though.3 -
I'm developing a game for about 3 months, and currently looking for partners.
This idea is quite robust and my goal is to take it to steam or so.
Has anyone has an advise on what terms should I state with these partners?
Ps: Looking at teamups.net -
Got an empty 30gb SSD laying around. In my PC there is one 1TB HDD with Windows and one external 1TB HDD with Steam Games and stuff on it. Would you recommend installing some linux distro onto 30gb? Would prefer Mint or Manjaro.6
-
Tldr: fuck me!
Ok this is only marginally dev-related, but I need to let off some steam as if I was valve. And this is, as I understand, the general purpose of this app.
So: fuck my university, I really love what I study, but the over all circumstances are far from ideal. In addition to that the pressure from the exams and the workload that is expected really stress me out to an extend where I suffer from anxiety and stress related health issues, which again makes me less able to do a good job, which again stresses me out more. This is an incredibly hard time for me but I am sure I will make it. Thanks for listening.3 -
Spent 3 days in a santorium. With my fam.
Didn't rest a bit [with temporary exceptions of evenenings where I did get to relax in a steam bath [50C, 99%] followed by ice cold water bucket].
Not looking forward for the monday. At all.2 -
I would have never guessed when I my steam deck that my laptop and desktop would die the the same week my grandpa would die. An I would be tasked to make a memorial video for him. But the steam deck is truly the best console ever even does video editing better then I ever expected.4

I have an unused Steam Key for Battlefield 5
If anyone wants it, Key is in the comments. First Come First Serve ;)5 -
Api for providing a central platform of connected accounts. So you can do stuff like get your pubg info in discord or get your Twitter in steam. Has more uses I guess but that's just a starting point :)

This url brings to error page with invalid email address that will actually autoreply "We're writing to let you know that the group you tried to contact (do-bug) may not exist, or you may not have permission to post messages to the group. A few more details on why you weren't able to post"
Okay, sure. This may happen to indie stuff etc.
But we are talking about bigass company thats fucking trying to assasinate steam (and so far kindda fails). You dont want to show customers error messages, sure, but at least, if you do it, and you tell your customer to send email to admin, make fucking sure that you provide an actually fucking working email. Is it so hard?
No wonder they cant conquer steam. And thats positive side3 -
The Borderlands Handsome Jack Collection on Steam is currently $7 for ALL Borderlands games AND all DLC for them (except the new UHD packs, but those are free anyway.)

Fucking lazy pieces of shit over at steam didn't even include a link to their updated privacy policy or as far as I can tell not even a single link.
"Lol, just search it up on our webpage" -
Anybody else have trouble with getting stuck on very little things? Keeps happening to me in class and sometimes gets to me. I'll be able to finish most of my work in quick time and all is good (I get excited that everything runs so I'll write with some speed), but then some very very little bug is there and I get stuck on it for a very long time and I just feel bad about myself. I guess this does happen, what do you guys do to blow off some steam? I know I should just take my time since I'm still a beginner and I'll try to work on that.11
-
So, i successfully installed steam! nice right
well nvidia decided to fuck me over after i rebooted, and i'm stuck at the blank screen with a cursor blinking after choosing arch linux. i ran nvidia-xconfig prior to this. i'm actively googling the problem now, but any tips you guys could drop are welcome!2 -
So I wanted to publish the spherical voronoi minesweeper on steam. I paid the one time fee, submitted my tax document and then never heard back, and that’s four month ago.
Shall I just open source it, it’s a unity project so idk how the structure of that should be.
I can also just put the built version on github, if the file size is not enormous.4 -

So since I don't use VLC and I'm pretty annoyed by the fact that it needed to remind me it exists, I decided to purge it.Then not 5 minutes later I realize that, oh fuck, Konsole is missing. In those 5 minutes I had also installed Steam and thought that was what fucked it all up, then I reinstalled Konsole and somehow VLC was back.
Then I tried to just apt remove VLC instead and boom, Konsole was gone
So, sorry, but are you fucking kidding me!?1 -
I've been a windows user for a long time now, but I've been thinking of trying out Linux sometime soon. Which distro should I start with? And can I still play steam/origin games? I might also use a VM to see how I like it before I move over.
I'm sure I could google this, but a lot of you seem to use Linux, and this isn't stack overflow so I'm not expecting too many people to shit on me for asking 🙂5 -
My final exams are going on and I'm cramming textbooks all day. It's currently midnight and I still have another 50 pages of reading to do. Plus revise everything before the exam tomorrow morning. I'm exhausted! And this is going to continue through Christmas and New Years Day! What the fuck is my University thinking!?
Anyway, I have to go back to finishing this chapter. Just came here to let off some steam. Thanks devRant for seeing me through this.2 -
Finally did it!
Replaced my desktop pc (which I use for gaming) which had Windows 7 with Arch Linux! It was not hard because I already use it on my laptop.
OK it was a bit struggle with nvidia and cinnamon due to missing libraries I had to install which I don't know before.
But it is possible to play games on Arch?
Yes definitely!
CS:GO - works (native, steam)
League of Legends - works (wine)
World of Tanks - works (wine)
All I need is working (:1 -
Gaijin (war thunder), Origin and Epic Games game launchers do fucking suck.
They miss the option to load already installed games.
Lesson learned: If I wanna buy games, I will do it on Steam or on Battle.Net.
They have proper game recognition systems in place.
Now I have to download at least 300 GB of games with my bambus connection.
Dammit.9 -
Which one of you did this?
https://youtube.com/watch/...
This is both a Steam and Paypal exploit. I have not seen the Brit put a disclaimer like this before.1 -
Why does WinBlows have to take an eternity to boot back up after an update !?
Does anyone here know an article or something detailing how to debloat this fkin OS? I just wanna play Steam games. Everything else is almost extra.16 -
I just want to blow off steam here,
Its hard to make a dynamic form with just 2 and a half day of time considering the coding for backend and front end and also mobile responsive. Its very frustrating and the same time im dissapointed in my self but i think its not entirely my fault its hard to do all those task with such little time and a lot of things to consider -
New game on steam, Middle-earth.
Showing absolutely no in game footage and asks you to pre-order for some bullwhip award.
Don't pre-order, please kill this type of behavior.
What is it even, rpg, rts?2 -
Fucking hell! I'm trying to sit down and learn LaTeX so I can take notes with math formulas in the notes. Between work, random bullshit, crappy roommate drama, cats with the zoomies, and the kiddo going nuts wanting to play I just can't catch a fucking break to studying.
I'm torn between drinking a cup of coffee at 10pm to be able to get a chance to study or being able to sleep tonight...
However in the hell did I convince myself that going back to school at 30 would work better than when I was 19-20?!? (I'm still only 29 but shit I loose steam quickly these days 😰)
Lol I'll update the rant here if I drink that cup of 10pm joe!4 -
Any tips on staying focused and not being distracted for a quasi-intermediate programmer? I keep getting distracted by steam games. Even weird shit like installing gitlab community on a VM, thus loosing an hour of time.1

<ideaForTheFutureOfProgramming>
I wish there was a way for PROgrammers with Jobs to share their work with someone who does not have a job, but yet need practise. I think in the future someone could post a part of a project to a website and someone could finish IT and return it to them. The person posting the project could also optionaly give something in return. (money, money on steam) This way newbies get practise and experience, while people can get work done. This was thought up by a 15 years old boy.
</ideaForTheFutureOfProgramming>6 -
Submenu Boards doesn't show in Firefox 45.5.0 when viewing a single issue. This is really frustrating as I can't move quickly between the sprint board and a specific issue. What also sucks about jira is that there is no way to report bugs like this (perhaps Atlassian sincerely believe that they never have any bugs in their products), leaving devrant as the only resort to let out steam ;)

Next project idea self hosted home webserver powered by steam engine:

For what reason has windows update settings in its group policies if it completely ignores them? 😠😡
I disabled everything that regards windows update, because I had to copy 80gb (my vm with all the dev tools installed) from PC A to PC B.
Well , guess what I saw this morning..
I am really annoyed by this, but I need windows for my steam games - I guess steam rescues Windows once more this time..1 -
So Steam Deck is like a tiny PC, lets you play PC games on a tiny monitor?
Why would you want that? vs buying a gaming laptop/desktop
Assuming you already don't have one... And well if you do, why would you buy this?
Sense more like a downgrade?18 -
I shared my steam library with my little brother yesterday. I almost forgot how fun it is to backseat play Kerbal Space Program.2
-
I keep having these ideas of a steam like interface for transfering money and buying virtual items, but I can't for the life of me figure out how i would go about it other then a basic flask mongo db set up which would be ripe for malicious attacks5

follow up from https://devrant.com/rants/2377758/...
As theKarlisK and Root stated "When it works it works beautifully, when it doesn't a bit of Google-fu finds a fix".
some issues I found in this journey:
- stuttering in some games, even using custom proton build(halo mcc)
- some titles are hard to even start(my RE7 D:)
- bluetooth with my dongle isn't good, takes to long to connect my xbox s controller, sometimes with doesn't even work at all. had to do a workaround in the first place to pair (but this is a problem with ubuntu, not linux gaming but had to mention it)
- games outside the proton ecosystem can be a pain in the ass to get working. LoL on lutris crashes 3 times at startup, don't wanna even try to install overwatch on lutris
- rbg software can be "hard" to find or the alternative is not that good. (got an alternative for mystic light but is just command line. did not found a logitech keyboard software :/, hadn't search hard enough )
pros:
- being able to game on linux is like a dream come true
- most of my steam games runs out of the box
- is linux
- is linux
but the issues are starting to bother me...5 -
The amount of hoops steam makes you jump through to get a coming soon page, after already paying a submission fee, is God damn ludicrous.

I'm currently watching Game of Thrones and procrastinating installing ubuntu onto my desktop and learning to make scripts for Hackmud...

Yeah, buying Screeps yesterday was definitely my most sober Steam purchase ever. I thought HackNet had a steep learning curve lol. -
Hello devRant community,
I was away for quite some time.
I hope all you guys are doing okay. Also I am in final year of Bachelors and Goddd is it stressfull?
Its killing me man , so I came here to blow off some steam. Also if you are interested you can checkout my blog.
Started it with the sole purpose of learning more and so that I can crack an interview in next 3-4 months. Lets see how it goes.
Here it is - www.arjitsharma.com
Also if you have any suggestions on how to approach a hiring manager and where to it will be great. Well infact any suggestion will be good -
* Automated Technical and Fundamental Expert Advisor trading in MT4 with Python dealing with RSS News Feed on the Financial Calendar
* Food decision/recommender/randomizer app
* Food decision/recommender/randomizer bot
* Personal Companion set up on Raspberry Pi with Jasper AI, buy BrickPi and Lego Mindstorm to make it a friendly moving robot
* Cardboard fort for my kid
* A 3D game that involves hacking with drama storyline (inspired from Mr. Robot) and publish it on Steam
* A SaaS app like Tinder that matches would-be Project Managers with Devs to push Devs to finish side projects that we have and push Project Managers to use whatever PM techniques and methodology (Six Sigma perhaps)
And so much more... Ughh. -
start playing alle the (still sealed) games for my consoles that molder in my shelves or in my steam library

How do you muster the motivation to complete that final part of a project when you've run out of steam and just want to sleep for days, but the launch is nearing and you need to finish and polish up the product?3
-
I'm thinking about installing Windows 10 besides Ubuntu to be able to play every game from my Steam lib. I've googled how to do this properly but I didn't find stories of what can go wrong.
Does anyone has experience with that?9 -
Anybody have their Steam Deck yet? If so, what do you think of it? The page says mine will come in the July-September tranche. I reserved about three hours into the initial period, last July.7
-
Steam, f you because of your beautiful idea to expire gslts "on the fly" as soon as a server is not online for the glimpse of me taking a shit.2
-
The main difference between macOS and windows/linux is that it has Helvetica, the best typeface to ever exist, built in. When an email arrives, you know it's your fellow Mac user who sent it, so you know they at least take a shower every day, and you don't have to explain things like they're five.
You can use Helvetica for everything. Designers love it. Guess what — all of them have Macs, so things they design look best on your Mac as well. They don't test on windows or any linux.
Linux has the important mission of overthrowing windows as the main desktop OS for normies, and that's a good thing. Valve and Steam OS is a massive step forward. But, if you value your time and want to be surrounded with beautiful things, nothing beats macOS.22 -
When using the new iMac 🖥, how come the images for apps are crystal clear (apart from steam apps), but as soon as it comes to playing a video the Mac just decides to lower the image quality dramatically?1
-
Why the fuck are native desktop applications so damn slow when it comes to displaying remote/web contents???
Steam, XBOX/Microsoft Store, Apple App Store/Music are just a few examples. Waiting 1-2 seconds to perform a search, list products, start video playback or just loading a few bytes of text.
Even Internet Explorer destroys them when it comes to loading and displaying data! I prefer every overloaded electron based app over these crutches.
But honestly, why is this?!5 -

Not programming related, kind of...
I don't want to seem like I'm sharing nosense but I guess this sort of thing would be popular with devs / gamers

Think the internet is bad and loudly complaining while everyone else says it's fine till I realise ... Steam updates are what is slowing me down 😳

Hell, I always thought I was a team player, but is it a great week being the sole developer (all the other on vacation). So I didn't get interrupted all the time, read overblown PR. Still, even in their absence I spent about three days fixing their build issues and PR's, but I could sit down and read the code, some documentation to get a better understanding why it all sucks and what we should do with our pain in the ass build system.
It's really a blast, deleting some stupid code, removing superfluous dependencies and above all leaving snarky remarks in the commit messages and code comments. Just letting some steam off. Code is where my devrant is. -
I hate it when devs use value attribute instead of place holder especially when you know that input text is definitely going to change.
-
So I was bored today and I decided to jump on the “shit on Facebook for being offline“ train by posting some PROGRAMMING memes on the rest of the available social media. I didn’t repost like everyone else and everything was fine until I made the mistake to post them on imgur as well. Apparently imgur is full of toxic, sad, arrogant pricks that will downvote the shit out of anything in an instant, without really understanding the posts. If you think reviews on the app store, google play or review bombings on steam are the definitions of stupidity and ignorance or that comments on Facebook are everything wrong with this world, then you haven’t tried posting on imgur.
Seriously, fuck imgur.7
