So today I got fired.
The Ceo forgot they asked me to take care of some business while he was gone. They went on a trip to get thier butt inflated (quite litterally kim kardashian status) for two months.
Me, A general employee, not a captain, or a division manager.
Turns out I ran the company a lot more efficiently than they did, reducing our man power from 5 staff per task down to one per task.
Not only that increased client retention 78℅
Was let go for overstepping my company roles.
I think they we're just a bit jealous, or ego was too large.
Luckily, one of the division managers took me under one of their teams and is secretly keeping me on until I bust out of this joint.12
HUGE FUCKING DILEMMA FOR ME.
I will probably get the chance of choosing a company phone soon (as in, next few days).
Option 1: Android - not allowed to root or anything crazy so I'll have a partly open system but with google tracking fully enabled at all times (most probably).
Option 2: iOS - Also not allowed to jailbreak or anything 'weird' but it's entirely closed source. Although no Google tracking shit.
I honestly have no clue what to choose.
"Trinidad And Tobago" changed their country name to "Trinidad & Tobago", and the .Net framework reflected that change.
So that's why this unit test is failing.
I GUESS BULLSHIT IS NOW INTERNATIONAL.2
It is 2020 and I still don't know shit about docker :3
I don't know how bad this is.....17
Yesterday I wanted to go to the theater with my girlfriend. It was her idea because as a student you can get reduced tickets for the play, but only via the online store exactely two hours before the play starts. We had already tried two weeks before but with no success. So this time I said i want to be on my pc with a proper browser and not a mobile version like last time. So we are sitting at home me in front of their website on one screen and with a clock on the other screen. Two minutes realy i hit refresh and I get a selection for the reduced tickets, nice.
You would think.
After selecting the amount. ERROR: Can not get your tickets. I was like fuck they are already sold out because it's a popular play. But hey let's try again. I got one ticket but not the second one, okay strange lets try again, same ERROR again. WHAT the FUCK, no feedback what so ever. My girlfriend had then the idea that they maybe restricted the amount for reduced tickets to one (does not state this explicitly but hey lets give it a shot). Use second browser select one ticket. ERROR can not get you the amount of seats. Rage level near to a 1000 why did it work two minutes before but not anymore. Trying around for five more minutes finally got the second ticket.
Now the real fun begins.
Proceeding to checkout should not be that hard you would think, but you need to be registered for that. Okay so let's do that. The salutation is not required neither is the address for the tickets but you need to have a company name??!!!!! The fuck?? I am not self employed and neither are a most other people around here so why is this field mandatory? Beeing a little under stress I decided to found the "asdf" company with my girlfriend.
Now one would think checking out is easy. Not so fast.
After accepting the terms of service another ERROR, unable to accept your data. What data? I did not input anything new? Where does this come from? Ok never mind I am going to pay with credid card that must work!
ERROR: Internal paymentservice initialization failure! Sorry what? I thought maybe I was to long idle in this browser and they do not reserve the tickets for so long (which would be no surprise to me at this point). Let's try again. Nope same error.
Now my rage level was really over 9000 but we really wanted to go so I decided to call the customer SUPPORT. Or better to say I had a answering maching telling me for ten minutes how sorry they are that this takes so long, yeah you bet. Then and this is now really great: the support guy asks me: "What error do you see? Internal paymentservice initialization failure?" I was like, okay he knows this so they need to know how to handle it. FUCK NO. "Sorry I can't help you. This is our payment system maybe they (IT) are doing some maintenance I can't halp you. Call the theater directly good day." Sorry what just happened, you fuckers are the vendors for the tickets for nearly all big events around here and the theater explicitly states to call you for tickets but you can not help me? Like hell.
This process took 25 very frustrating minutes and I was really angry and wanted to quit, then I saw that there is also a paypal option which I had not tried. With very little hope i selected everything for the payment, registered with paypal and they told me I already had an account. So reactivated this five year old account payed with all the mobile passwords and tans to finally, after 30 fucking minutes, get a pdf file for a ticket. Repeated the last step for the second ticket and with some time left to get there we were off.2

I'm the worst with color combinations and I want to enable dark mode on the privacy/security blog!
What color combinations (if you have hex codes or something, please share!) would you think would suit the blog?
Switched to DuckDuckGo, because Google thought it would be nice, to ban the Proxy IP of our company (because you know, many requests) from searching and putting us behind these captcha monstrosities. I don't want to captcha myself out of every query I have for goddamn 2 minutes with slow ass fading images.
Turns out, I like their service even more.9
I hate asking questions but I need to right now.
Any suggestions for an easy installable email server like mailinabox? Multiple domains is a requirement :)46
Game dev update: I'm procrastinating the project cuz I need help with stupid background and it doesnt mix well so Im just contemplating existence
But I did this for fun8
I am in programmer hell today.
Oh great programmers of the universe, lend me your strength so that I do not leave work a shattered soul on this day!5
I am a terrible designer. When i say terrible i mean my designs for website somehow always manage to look like an ugly piece of shit.
Anybody else has the "gif glitch" issue

Why only with Debian and not with literally any other flavor of Linux I've tried, which are all Debian variants?
Typical interaction in any XDA development thread:
User: How do I put these ROMs on my phone? Plz halp!
Me: ROOT -> flash RECOVERY -> enter recovery -> flash ROM -> flash Gapps -> profit.
User: How to get the roots? Can halp me?
Me: You're in a Nexus forum. There are directions on how to root everywhere.
User: I can't find. Plz halp.
Me: Fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash recovery.img, flash SuperSU, flash ROM...
User: Where I can get fastboot?
Me: *link to Google developer's page*
User: Can you just tell me?
Me: No, you need to figure it out, so you know what you're doing.
*2 hours later*
User: HALP! I use toolkit for to get roots, and now phone won't come on! How to fix?! Halp, halp, halp!
*5 minutes later*
*squirming in bed*
If it ain't broke don't fix it.. If it ain't broke don-WHAT THE FUCK IS "payment.needed2"??
Calm down, it's just some bad code but it works, you didn't write it, it's not your probl-WHY THE FUCK DO THE IF STATEMENTS HAVE SO MANY DUPLICATED LINES??
Sleep. Just sleep.
Legit got excited because today...on friday...one of our servers went down.
Tell me, do you know how fun it is to call your admin if he was "able to get it up" just for him to reply that he is having some "performance issues"?
Lmao it's fucking hilarious.
On another nothe, plz halp5
Add a course that teaches people how to write and formulate questions.
So that people don't write questions like, "my code no work, plz halp".3
I was just messing around to find a good username. Finally I got frustrated and tried “gary”. Now I am stuck with it for at least next 6 months! HALP @dfox12
Am I the only one who procrastinates only on starting a task? Like, once I start the task, then it's easy to keep going till completion; but I can't freaking get my butt into the chair and start.
Any tips on how to get over starting troubles?7
Sorry for the excess of blury.
Coworker thinks running a query on a console is a way to proof all use-cases.
Good lord I'm still surprised at how many bugs I can spot just by overlooking his code.
I mean, what is a MVC?!!SHIFT+1!!!?
Routing is just a file importing a 5000 liner controller that is actually not a controller for it handles http attributes and sends the response themselves.
Models are just good guesses of queries or a shit load of them: see picture attached
So I have a fucking groupmate for our degree project and he's been constantly bugging on my neck asking me to do things. The problem with him is that he constantly reminds me of the things that I should be doing and he seems like he wants the thing to be done all himself. Basically, he doesn't trust me that I could deliver whatever he asks me to do. He keeps on micromanaging me from time to time and he seems like he wants to control my life altogether! Fuck this.
Oh and another, whenever he asks for opinion, whatever you say doesn't even fucking matter. He dismisses it immediately anyway and goes with whatever he thinks.
Seriously, fuck this!!! I can't keep calm and I need to constantly check on my posture! (Forgot the right term...) Uhhhh halp5
I can't stop the urge to buy Udemy courses. Help!! If I don't stop, I go broke cause I'm still aiming for a job.10
Anyone who has experienced this without falling into desperation deserves a beer, I know I need one.
Colleague: Python says I have an indentation error, halp. *Sends screenshot*
You: okay, it says it's located on file.py line 39. Can I see the related line?
Colleague: *sends a screenshot of the whole file, without numbered lines*
You: ummm, could you send me the related lines tho?😐
Colleague: 😒 yeah. *Resends a screenshot of the error and the whole file...again*
You: I REALLY need you to send me only the function scope to help you cuz I can't visually debug the whole file on a picture.
Colleague: *sends a panned phone picture with an arrow to the function (half of it)*
Plot twist: she's your girlfriend.
GF: I can't see it, I'll go have a snack.1
Currently our companies website is being attacked and we're getting a 500 error and the FTP servers are down. Everyone is panicking. Little do they know that I just rebooted the server and already sent out a notice of this happening and will be back online. People are chanting for my death outside my cubical with fire and pitch forks. HURRY UP AND FINISH REBOOTING SERVER!!!1!!2

My Windows installation has been achting up the last few days. Something with permissions is messing with my gpu it seems.
Of all the errors I have gotten, this must have been the best one5
to give you an idea of how much work this really was, the problem was that the request wasn't sending in the frontend6
My next stack overflow post on a fake account.
NOTHING WORKS IN WINUX!!!?
WEN I TRY 2 INSTAL WINUX, IT GIVE MEH ERRWOR. HALP!
I wonder how many downvotes I will get?
I'm not normally a troll, but today has been "fun"2
Things that piss me off in github issue comments:
- "halp it doesn't work!!!" no description, no steps to reproduce, nothing.
- people writing comments in a random ass language that nobody understands so everybody except them has to go through the effort of translating it.
- issue comments that escalate into a meme fest because the issue was linked on reddit or some other platform
Amazon's AWS support sent me an email about a request to support that I sent to billing, saying they sent it to billing. They then said they couldn't help.
I just need them to stop billing me for things I no longer use!3

I'm hoarding free courses on Udemy which I probably won't even watch. I even enrolled in stuff not related to dev, things like meditation and etc...1
When you're working on something all day and then the senior dev swoops in and answers your question in 5 minutes.
Hello, I am new to DevRant!
I was fed up with Windows 10(broken search, start menu etc), hence I installed Ubuntu on one of my PC's.
Now the issue is that my Ubuntu System boots very slowly!
I have a Docker Container + Some apps in startup! It used to boot up very quickly IDK after a week of use it has gotten considerably slower!
Tired of dealing with shitcode, that's all I always inherit. Maybe I picked the wrong career? or maybe I shouldn't have even read about things like SOLID or picked up Clean Code.
Then again if I hadn't, I wouldn't be where I am. But I'm unhappy. Why do I always get these projects where the poeple who wrote them (and dissappeared) clearly had no proefficiency on the used tech stack.
Am I ever gonna be part of a project with an actual lead/architect, who strives for the code not to rot?
Maybe I'm just being a little bitch whinning over this?
Halp!! the more I code, the more I hate it. It wasn't like this when I was the architect. But I didn't make as much money as I do now...
What do I do4
I actually experienced this today:
"Halp, why is this not working?"
$array = ;
$array->key = 'value';
...a few more...1
I'm very bad at reading someones code. For example when someone on uni asks me to help him with code I just write it from scratch, I can't find the mistake or even understand thoughts of this person. I'm afraid that when I'm going to work in team I'll be useless. Can I even do something with this?5
I don't know my problem is. I lost my motivation to code, my enthusiasm and excitement to read a code and solve a problem. My love of my life for 6 years whom I thought she's the one, gave up on us. It was a long journey, lots of ups and downs, but really worth the time and sacrifice. Now, she's doing good, very happy on her life judging from her social media. Can't believe she just moved for 2 months. To be honest, i want her to be happy but quite bitter that she just moved on quite fast. And I don't if this is the reason why I lost my motivation and enthusiasm to code. Or maybe I just don't like the project we're working on. Well, I really don't like it since it's a mobile game, I really want to build webapp or mobile app but it's too late to change the project.
I'm not like this, I used to code until morning without noticing the time, excited to solve a problem that stuck on me for quite a while. I really became a lazy person right now. I feel the pressure to finish the project but I don't see myself working on it, I don't feel interested reading a code. I just play computer games instead of working on my project during my free time. I don't know if I'm depressed. I socialized with people, have fun, happy when I'm with them, but when I'm alone, sadness starts to creep in. I feel like there's an empty void in myself. I don't know, i just want the motivation and energy to work on my project. Im tired, lazy, and feeling burnt out. If you read until this very last sentence, thank you and I'm sorry for reading this nonsense.5
I made this bad decision to buy pretty pricey laptop with nVidia card. Lenovo Legion Y520.
So yeah, have you heard about optimus technology and how much one can hate nvidia?
> Debian is working, nice.
> Let's try nvidia-driver.
> 48hours later: WOoooooah glxgears at 120 fps!
> Installed some fonts. "Could not load gpu driver". HDMI port stops working. Unable to repair. Entering despair.
> Surviving on dual-booted windows.
Can't sleep because never ending brainstorming/problem solving, any of you guys who suffer the same sleeples nights, and do you have any tips? Was thinking of trying out prescription medications.5
Need to rant / maybe some advice.
Working remote is hard.
New company, remote on boarding. I feel like my coworkers are robots, and I'm being tossed into the deep end with minimal guidance.
The codebase is so unnecessarily complicated, its impossible to read. I've been trying to figure out how things work for a whole month, still not sure.
My mentor that is supposed to help onboard me is a robot, and answers questions in a somewhat acceptable manner, but it still feels like a lot of "figuring out" is still left for myself.
My other work partner that is also a newbie like myself is also a robot - doesn't talk or ask many questions whenever we have a sync up meeting.
The codebase is huge and feels quite overwhelming, I don't feel like I got a team "with my back", I don't enjoy work as much as I have before, I barely do any coding (mostly reading code and trying to understand how everything is working by setting breakpoints and debugging tests that take foreeeever to run), and some days I'm seriously considering cutting my losses and jumping ship just to save my sanity.
Am I paranoid? Am I just dumb? Should I just suck it up and be happy I have a job? Is this how Remote work is supposed to feel like? Why does it feel like my soul is dying?
Anyone in similar situations, or who can give some insight/advice/etc, I would highly appreciate it.
And this is supposed to be a good company too from the reviews. I don't know how it can be so crappy in reality. Did I make the wrong choice joining? Should I jump ship sooner rather than later? I've only been here about a month or so, and maybe its too soon? Halp!14
R.I.P John Doe
He made the mistake of writing unmaintainable code then leaving the team.
I just heard of his passing.
He was brutally beaten to death by the new maintainer. Now the maintainer is behind bars.
And now I've been asked to maintain it.
R.I.P Me as well I guess
Joke of course.7
So I suck at scripts, windows scripts namely. I need a script to monitor a program on machine and send an email if it goes down. There are eight instances running on the machine and they can be determined to be working if a specific port is open, one port per instance. I have no clue where to start and I thought it could be done with some existing service or script. Suggestions?10
I 'm working with python 3:
Was about to make my app print a text letter by letter (same as somebody's typing the text) and read it at the same time.
I wrote a method for typing and works fine but cannot find a solution for the tts and make them run at the same time.
Can U halp me please ?
Thanks in advance 😊2
Had a 5 hour call today, where we wanted to set up a system from one of our subcontractors in our own environment. Struggled forever to get the backend up and running.
Turns out that some dependencies were hardcoded as local file URLs...
No, our linux machine does not have C:\Users\<username> 🙄
someone please motivate me to code again.
since one month i did nothing but digital art/youtube watching/maths/chatting but i did not code.
the main reason being that all my projects have bugs currently :/6
How do you transition from a Windows to Apple keyboard layout? OS X is good and everything but I can't get accustomed to this weird layout. All my shortcuts that I spent years memorizing doesn't work. Halp!9
!rant just a question. Sorry in advance for the long post.
I've been working in IT in Windows infrastructure and networking side of things for my entire career (5years) and recently was hired for a role working with AWS.
We use Macs and we use *nix distros for days. I've only ever dabbled for 'funsies' before with Linux because every previous job I held was a Windows house and f*** all else.
I'm just wondering if anyone here might have some insights as to a great way to learn the Linux environment and to learn it the right way. I'm not the best Windows admin ever and will never claim to be, but I have seen stuff that other people have done that makes me want to swing a brick at someone's head. And I feel that with all of the setup wizards and the "We'll just do it for you." approach that Windows has used since forever it allowed enough wiggle room for people that didn't know what they were doing to f*** sh*t up royally. I'm not familiar enough with Linux to know if this is also a common problem. I know that having literal full-access to every file in your OS can cause a n00b like myself to mess up royal, thus the question about learning Linux the right way.
I vaguely understand the organization of the folders and file structure within Linux, and I know some very basic commands.
sudo rm -rf /*
But All of my co-workers at my new job are like mighty oaks of knowledge while I'm a tiny sapling. And at times I've been intimidated by how little I know, but equally motivated to try and play catch-up.
In addition to all of this, I really want to start learning how to program. I've tried learning multiple times from places like codecademy.com, YouTube tutorials, and codeschool.com but I feel like I'm missing the lesson that explains why to use a certain operation instead of another. Example: if/else in lieu of a switch.
I'm also failing to get the concept of syntax in certain languages I've tried before. Java comes to mind real fast.
The first language I tried teaching myself was C++ from YouTube. I ended up having a fever dream that night about coding and woke up in a cold sweat. Literally, like brain overload or something. I was watching tutorials for like 9 hours straight.
Does anyone know of a training resource that will explain, in terms a 5 year old would understand, what the code is doing and why? I really want to learn but I'm starting to lose steam cause I'm just not getting it.
Thank you in advance for any tips guys and gals. I really appreciate it. Sorry for the ridiculously long questions.5
Started work at a call center recently, really hoping things work out since it's full time, if you're inclined I'd appreciate some help toward that stress ball, I think I may need it soon...4
Maybe you guys could help me...
My father just sent me a .xlsxm file (excel + macro file), it's all about horse races and stuff a 60+ years old dude would do :D
The file is pretty neat, but some minors changes needs to be done, but I have no clue where the code is. I found the "macro" part but it's empty, and I'm not surprised since the file itself seems to be generated from C# (Maybe not, I'm not the expert)
Sooo... Can anyone tell me how do I get to this code?8
Ok, so, serious question.
How the frick do you time a music game properly?
...Ok, maybe in C# it's just impossible, isn't it? Because I've done a metronome, it kinda works, but it's... wobbly... Because the thread stops every time the music effect is being played.
And also how do you make the notes...? ...I should design an entire editor for charts/maps, I guess, but how do I make that in C#?
So maybe I should try in Unity?
What do you think? I want to make a music game so bad ;–;8
So I created a little script for my mother because otherwise she had to combine 70 spreadsheets manually, I just couldnt sit there and do nothing. So I wrote a simple Python script in like 30 mins, decided that it needed a GUI because in the end it is for my mother. So wrote a GUI and partly learnt PyQt during that in an hour, which was all working fine.
Then I got to the point where I actually had to hand it over to my mother, preferably as an executable so that there is no hassle at all. So found this tool, Pyinstaller which seems to work great. Created an executable with all the dependencies and stuff in a single file, it worked on my win10 machine (because I developed on Linux of course). So I distributed it to her and she immediately gets an error. Of course there is no description and stuff because I made it a simple program, no log files and such. But fortunately she told me that it errorred when she wanted to run it, so I knew it had to be due to the executable.
Turns out she is still using windows 7 at work, which of course is different that windows 10 and here I am at 11pm, installing updates on a fresh windows 7 machine just to create a new build in that environment and make it work on her machine.
Fuck you, windows update. I swore to never see that ugly ass progress bar again, but yet here I am. Send halp.
I am almost just at the point where Im going to teach my mother how to run a python application from the command line because wheels are actually available for all python dependencies (instead of compiling them)!
Are there better python executable creators out there for wincrap?3
I have 10 days off remaining for this year... Basically 2 effective weeks...
What should I do:
A) 2 week holiday
B) 2 x single week
C) carryover to 2021 for maybe real holiday
D) a day for each week
Choose wisely 😆 It's my effin holiday 🤦♂️8
Hey devRant people !
How are you ?
I’ve a question, do you know a website like FrontendMaster, CloudAcademy or LinuxAcademy but ... for backend stuff ?
EdX, Udemy and all are very good but I would like to find a platform specialized in this topic.3
I'm interning and working on something above my skill level and it works for the most part but I think I may have done it completely wrong for like the past week :') everyone is on paid vacation and I'm just sitting here like a baby bird with a broken wing
Pls no anger if it doesn't do exactly what it is supposed to. I am frail.2
Counted it out... 100k LoC frontend & backend... Not a single automated test. No unit testing, no integration testing, nothing. I've been asked to implement a CI server.
Company notebook be like:

I need help!
This is gonna be a long question/story.
I'm a Syrian based in Malaysia working as a lead web dev in a good company.
I have a friend in trouble and I want to help him.
Here's a summary:
My friend is a project manager at a gaming studio he happens to be an Iranian atheist with around 2 years of experience in the game making industry.
He worked on and delivered a couple AAA games at his current place of employment as a project manager in one of the teams that made those games.
He stood up for his team when the management was overworking team till after midnight sometimes and forcing them to work on weekends without any tangible compensations ( basically they gave them things like free lunches, movie tickets, etc).
The result of his standing up to his team was the management handing him a notice telling him that he'll be fired within 2 months due to "underperforming".
This was a month and a half ago.
He looked around in Malaysia for a job that can get him a working visa, but his niche background couldn't help.
After his termination in few weeks he can extend his stay at Malaysia for approximately 2 - 3 months.
Now the reason why I mentioned that he's an "Iranian atheist" is the fun part of this story (sarcasm), Iranian government considers him as an "infidel" and he's banned from Iran.
His Iranian passport can't get him anywhere where he can make a living.
So basically he has close to no options.
Now to where I come into all of this:
I want to help him.
I'm going to dedicate my free time for the next 2 - 3 months teaching him web development, the problem is, I don't know how to teach web development in such a short time, in fact I've never taught anyone programming from scratch.
If he can show promising results I know that I can make a case for him get him a position in the company I work for.
I already convinced him today to try and learn web development because I can tell that in Malaysia there's always demand on good web developers.
Now to my request:
Did anyone here teach programming to someone else before?
Did anyone here learn web development in such a short time?
If you've read all this... Thank you :)17
Guys which fucken anti-virus do you recommend for free, which doesn't throw around with ads like crazy?😵
I know this might kinda start a war and some of you want me to use linux.
Sadly, win10 is a must.😛
Girlfriend managed to catch some encryption fuck-up..
I made her use sophos home before, but it seems like sophos isn't self-acting enough..
I hope you have some ideas..26
Developing nanosatellite to be launched with foreign company.
The ICD (Interface Control Document, basically guidelines regarding design) is clear, but there are some key points we needed to ask with the launcher.
I've sent email to ask them regarding those questions
Then got a reply saying that it'll be forwarded to the engineering team.
That's it. 2 weeks in, no reply. Tried emailing them again to nudge them, no reply, resent the email the following week.
Still waiting till today.
Please reply me 😂😂😂1
[Seeking Advice / Legal / Opinion]
Hello world, (TLDR at the bottom)
I'm the co-founder of a small startup and looking for advice from people of legal background or similar situations. (Any help making the reddit post more active will also help a lot: https://reddit.com/r/legaladvice/...)
Just as a backstory for better understanding:
a couple of years ago, me (early twenties, male) and another guy (late thirties, male) started an entrepreneurial journey, got in an accelerator program and some investment, and things always looked well.
We opened the company and started working / selling our services. Step by step we started recruiting, and getting some clients, and business is going well... ("well" as in, small revenues but not spending more than we earn).
The thing is that me and my co-founder's relationship has been degrading over time and I think it would be better for us and the company to split up and go our own way. He has the majority of the shares and I don't mind leaving it all behind for the sake of the company and mental health.
This is in US, if it helps, and we both have At-Will employment contracts.
My main question is, *if I do sign a termination contract*, from what I read, I'm obliged to remain reachable for a period of 12 months (plus all those IP related stuff, not sharing confidential info, etc).
Is there anything I should be careful about and get some kind of protection or get some more information before resigning?
I'm afraid that if I leave the company it affects the business negatively, as we both work 16 / 20 hour shifts many times and my work would not be easily replaced by anyone in the current team. We are hiring more people right now, and some seniors, and I was thinking on staying one month dedicated only to training them... Could this be specified in some contract that I am resigning from "today", but stay 30 days focusing on training new people, or anything similar?
I don't mind staying in touch and help whenever they could need, but I will not be available 24/7 and I will obviously need a job to pay living expenses, so I don't want to affect negatively my time in other jobs or personal life and be kind of protected against anything that he could do to make me stay continuously connected or compromised.
I'm interested in knowing any opinions and advice you guys may have, and feel free to ask some questions if you need extra details.
I just want the best for the startup but cannot hold much time in the current environment.
TLDR: Relationship between me and co-founder is getting worse, thinking on resignating but want to keep some sort of protection against anything that could make me keep compromised to the company.7
That moment you realise you fucked up, but don't have the courage to tell your team leader that you fucked up.. Especially when you're atleast 30% into a project.1
Wow. All these weekly rants work so well with my current project lol.
A 4-5 year old iOS project, written in Objective-C with some jQuery thrown in to keep things interesting. Its the kind of codebase where you look at some code and think "what the....how....you know what nevermind". Everything has CoreData mangled into it somewhere which causes all kinds of issues. got search results from a web API? better save those to CoreData. Why? Who knows...1
I've been given a huge stack of paper, some users stories and loose specs. Was tasked with engineering the specific requirements, then the models and finally the database. Then I need to build an API on top of that.
Stuff I'll use is Go and Postgresql. Small issue is, I've never done DBs, so I've no idea what to do or where to start.
Does anyone have any resources to help kick-start myself in this field? I've been reading on SQL, but that doesn't really tell me anything about data structures and how to transform those user stories into product requirements.6
Trying to add tiny, 1dp dividers to my Android navigation drawer...this shouldn't be taking me 45 minutes XD2
I've got a question for everyone as we are all in the same realm. How do you handle working for a company who provides no motivation, very little challenges, horrible pay, incompetent developers, and completely useless management?
Also, no other opportunities in the area. Literally. So, "change companies" wouldn't really be a viable option.12
Does anyone know where you could buy O'Reilly books cheaper than they are on their site and possibly cheaper than Amazon? 50$ per book for a student it quite a lot.11
Super curious: Ive broken my arch frequently. And then fix it and go on with my day. Or an update causes some weird package confliction because I used pip instead of pacman for one library or whatever.
But I keep hearing from different sources that "arch being super unstable is a myth. It never happens!" Okay surely not all the time, my system is usually pretty good but:
Do you people never `pacman -Syyu` ?
How have you not broken everything?! Or do you just pretend like the AUR (the best thing ever and also the source of most of my problems) doesn't exist? What black magic are you doing to appease the arch gods?10
I have a simple task to do but I want some of you guys' input.
So I need to set up a button that when pressed will cause a video to play on a nearby TV.
- This must happen instantly (or at most with a second or two of delay)
- Video will be "self-hosted" (not on Youtube or something) and will mainly stay the same
- No idea what kind of TV I'll get to work with (might be smart, probably not)
I'm thinking a Raspberry Pi with a button connected to it's GPIO and a static image displayed on the TV when idle. That way I can also manage/maintain it remotely via SSH and it should be reliable enough but on the other hand this could be an overkill...
Post your 2 cents please and thank you :)2
That feeling when you insert the driver disk for a wireless adapter to find they actually do provide Linux drivers!!!!!
Nobody ever provides Linux drivers, this is a god send! Thank you!
That feeling when they don't compile correctly! Damn you! ASUS pls. Halp. You're so close to being amazing.
Having a hard time finding work. Jack of all trades, master of none. Went to college for a while, but never finished a degree. Mostly self taught and can easily learn on the fly.
Can program, 3d design and model, ins and outs of unreal engine 4, web stuff, can do IT work, knows VR standards and tricks, powerful desktop and powerful laptop, plenty of uhd cameras, knows Android and ios, etc.
Where do I look? What can I apply for? Can I make money on my own? Can I provide a service? How do I sell that?
My company never used unit tests. And i would love to educate but i do not know how to unit test properly. I always en up with: if i want to properly test all ins and outs of this class's + operator. I need to add checks for positive number, negative numbers, nan, infinites, nulls etc. Etc. It needs so many tests for something so stupidly simple, that i don't see a way to motivate people to use it.
Am i missing something? Is there a guideline for "ok coverage"? Is testing just that much work and is that why nobody cares until it is too late?
I have been reading a book about working with legacy code. But still i got no answers. Halp!7
Do you care about your workplace/employer?
I feel quite a bit of stress, and a good friend of mine told me I "probably do it to myself" (working too hard and/or caring too much)
From him I heard that I care too much about stuff I don't get payed to do.
(Think management and server related stuff while I'm just a web developer)
So my question is either, do you care about what's going on? Do you think nah fuck it? Where do you draw the line?3
Does anyone have any recommendations regarding self hosted documentation/"note taking" platform/server ?
I would like something with markup support, I've looked at the awesome list for self hosted services on GitHub... But there is a lot... So does anyone has any experience he or she is willing to share ? 😇
Dillinger looks nice (https://dillinger.io/) but no idea if I can save to my server instead of locally/cloud services...4
What do you think of online tests (for hiring) with a mandatory webcam?
The webcam part is making me anxious enough to back out.24
So I just installed Elementary OS Loki on my older desktop and for that the wifi is incredibly slow, like 30 seconds to load googles home page. It also randomly stops working, and gives a no network connection. When this system was on windows I would average 50~ mb/s down speed, changing it to Linux I'm lucky to maintain 2mb/s. I've been googling for hours and nothing I try seems to work, any Linux pros here able to give me some suggestions. The network card in the PC is an Aetheros one, I it supports a,b,g,n and Bluetooth, I'm currently using the desktop with a Bluetooth mouse / kbd. (None of the hardware/setup has changed since using windows)2
awake for 48 hrs already still needs to code because i'm a slave and i won't be able to sleep if i stop but brain is now lagging halp!2
I have an interview for a Mobile Dev Trainee position with me classmates. I'm a web guy. I have no idea what has been going on with mobile dev while I was away. But this is opportunity. Halp! What to do to not screw it up? I understand the concept of making API calls somehow. Maybe, that would halp?1
So, I have a phone interview for a job that is basically the same job I have now, but they use c# instead of Java.
I'm only a year into my first programming job, and I'm not really sure what kind of questions they're going to be asking during this interview.
Anyone have any good examples?9
Trying to make android system rw on a rooted phone, but it doesn't allow me. FML. Hiw am I going to block YouTube ads now?8
Anyone know how to go about unit testing an application that is made up of:
(React using Typescript of course).
Electron has its own framework (Spectron), people seem to use Mocha with Node, React has its own tools like React testing library (and testing UI components will probably end me) and Typescript seems to play best with Jest - but a special Typescript flavour of Jest called ts-jest is preferable because the only other option is having Babel and its Typescript support that doesn't type check.
I want to beg for the sweet release of death.4
So, I have my first ever on site interview on Monday for a Mobile Software Developer position.
I’m super excited but also super nervous.
You guys have any tips for not Richard Hendrix-ing the on site interview? 😂4
Have you ever smelled fuckery, like the "the potential answers to my questions are 4 years old and unanswered" kind of fuckery?
Fuck my life.
Sooo I have this problem with my laptop (Ubuntu 16.04) and I have no idea what is wrong or how I can fix it.
I cant use the internet when i am connected through WiFi... I've tried a couple of things but it didn't work. Then @linuxxx told me to try and ask here for advice / solutions ☺
I found a useful network info script so I used that to gather the following info :
Please dev rant, you're my only hope12
I've got an interview invitation as a freelancer. I've never freelanced before. What if I don't know how to do what the client wants me to do? Halp.3
Soooo they merged the front-end yesterday, and everything broke: links, CSS, behavior, even fucking drop downs. I can't test anything anymore since yesterday, and I wish I could go back home and work on something more useful instead of waiting for a fix that'll probably come tomorrow
Devrant app bug report:
You can see the type content selection menu through the UI

Pretty sure I've decided to dedicate to shipping electron applications. The problem is I've only lightly dealt with node, recommendations on where to start?3
Quick disclaimer, it is easily googlable, but no matter where I search, I can't find a solution. This is why I'm trying here.
Okay, so the other day, I was trying to install the node package sqlite3, and it spat out errors all day long from the node-pre-gyp native module and from the node-gyp native module. I am using the latest LTS (as of 5/10/2018), and I can't get any answers on HOW TO FIX IT...! Please HALP ASAP!12
Well... I'm in apprenticeship, and the company I work for asked me to do insanely complicated algorithms about paid leaves and stuff (Oh and I'm in France so you get the mess about leaves). And I don't understand shit about that ! About TOIL ! I mean, I'm still in school goddammit ! Oh and I said to my boss : "Yeah, wow, that seems complicated to code" and he said : "Yup, have fun". So even him, knowing everything about that shit knows that it's hard af ! I'm currently dying of death and my brain is melting.
PS : Here's a rare gif of me reacting about what I need to code3
Is it better to implement a cryptpgraphic algo in a function or in a class? Also how?
I have a cryptography class and I really enjoy implementing the different techniques that we study in class. At first I was just implementing the techniques in a simple function with 3 parameters; key, message and a bool for encryption or decryption. But as they are getting more complex, it is becoming harder to continue implementing them in a single function block. So I thought of using a class but ran into the problem of how do I even do that? Do I make different methods for key generation, encrypting and decrypting?
P.S. It's really just for learning how the crypto technique works and not for anything serious.12
I'm trying to install ubuntu server 19.04 on a machine that also has windows 10 on it. The SSD is already split into two parts, one is an ntfs partition for windows and the other is free space with no partition. That's where I want to install the server, but the installer doesn't seem to be aware of the windows partition and I don't want to accidentally format it, overwrite it or make it unbootable.
Is it even possible to dual boot with ubntu server 19.04?10
alright i know this is not the right place and all but I'm running out of options nothing from so works for me i need to start a download by calling a POST method in my api tried using a form and some ajax but nothing working anyone can give pointers ? (vanilla js jquery no framework)2
Hello fellow Ranters,
I'm in need of some help, I want to try building a small website, like maybe 4 pages worth of work for my uncle. But I'd like to build it in such a way that a non-programmer (my uncle) could upload photos to a portfolio section through an administrative console page. I'm doing this mostly to learn how to build something like this and also as a side project to help out my uncle.
From what I've read, I'm thinking that Angular (maybe?) might be the right way to go about building dynamic pages, but I'm not really sure and was wondering what you guys would suggest? If possible can you please also recommend a place where I can find examples for something like this?
Thank you in advance for your help and recommendations, I really appreciate it!!!7
Did I go south, or I really am stuck in ES6 while ES9 is the thing going on or what is goinnnnnnnng on pls.
I'm dying when I see a span of code out there in the wild, mixed with everything else. `Can we have some backtick love?`
This is a site for developers. Halp!
Just got my first internship, unfortunately there were no C++ or Java positions available.
Here I find myself on a front end job using Angular 5 and typescript with practically no experience with web development.
Any tips to making this learning process easier?4
Hi, I'm currently taking a software dev course and curious to try using linux for software development. There's tons of linux distros and my question is, what's the best or ideal linux distro for it?8
What the fuck is this version control thing? We managed to pass one fucking entire semester building an mobile game without knowing anything about version control. How my team finished the game? Fuck, we just place our source code and files into the folder, archive to rar and sent it through gmail. My desktop was a fucking mess, it was bunch of New Folder(x) all over the place. Fucking school didn't even taught or mentioned even once about that shit. In fact our faculties were all master degree holder. Our life could have been easier back then. So in this last school year, we gonna use that shit in our Capstone project.5
I suck at data structures and algorithm, how can i be good at it? Or maybe i suck at programming in general, i don't know, 2 companies emailed me that I didn't pass their technical exam, I'm disappointed and thinking maybe software development is not for me.3
I'm porting an OpenGL project to work with WebAssembly, I'm using emscripten to compile/generate the 'glue' to JS. Sofar I'm able to render my gl code properly through the glfw3 framework. I know you can use emscripten callbacks for input, however I was hoping to keep my existing glfw3 callback setup, that said the only callback that seems to be working properly is mouse position, window resize, keyboard, etc never get called. If anyone knows how to enable these I'd be super greatful!1
One year anniversary at my company and I find I personally have 4 separate exchange accounts to varying levels of synchronization. Perforce, email, lync Skype and a few others have varying spellings of "Welcome1" as the password.
Every password expiration and reset gradually adds to the slow motion landslide.
IT can't figure out how my accounts are even working in the first place and wont touch it.
Can you guys give me ideas of a side project to do? I finished my last one and I'm feeling hopeless to use the shit ton of things I learned I learn through my jobs5
I feel stupid about once or twice per day because of samll and obvious mistakes I make.
But maaan I feel dumb as fucking rock when I read the Docker documentation, I don't understand any fucking thing, and as usual, I can't find 2 websites with the same opinion about anything
I JUST WANT TO MAKE MY THING WORK, PLEASE
Hello, I'm looking for a new machine but since I'm not very good with hardware, I'd like to ask for help:
I have a 7yrs old lenovo ideapad Y580, and even though I don't really play anymore on pc, I still would like the machine to last.
At first I was thinking about a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7 - Intel 10th Gen, but maybe I should go with a gaming laptop for the sake of the good specs? But then, which one? MSI, alienware ...?
And I'm a front-end, so I still need to be able to open graphic files.
I've started having nightmares about someone hijacking my computer and trying to freak me out. Halp.1
Okay soo... I have been working on a "notepad" script using bash. I basically have finished it but it lacks one thing. Verification if the user has typed anything! I started searching on google how i could do that, and found nothing (lol).
I'm asking help from you people :D
Here's the code that doesn't work.
while [[ $name != 'name' ]] || [[ $name == '' ]]
read -rp "What would you like the file name to be? The file extension is .txt!$(echo -ne '\n: ')" name
echo "Enter a valid file name please."
There's probably one small thing wrong anyway lol
It's about my freaking PC, again...
(If you still don't know what I'm talking about: https://devrant.io/rants/889384/ )
I have not ranted about this until now because I was trying to fix it on my own... but since I'm now desperate to get it fixed, I'll say it here too... please help me, I'll give you cookies or virtual hugs or something ;-;
The problem is... my audio driver doesn't work. I tried to update it (from Realtek's website), but... after installing the new version of the driver, it asks me to restart my PC, I do that, and then... nothing happens, the problem remains.
The audio icon on Windows' application bar says no audio devices are connected, which isn't true as it should notice the PC's native speakers, or my headphones, but it freaking doesn't.
As a musician, this for me is a problem...14
Am I the only one who want to learn programming and can't stop overreading about it and other connected stuff?
I feel I'm in deep darkness with my learning. I'm still writing those sample codes from books/video courses and can't motivate myself to come up with a piece of software to write myself.
It's some kind of loop which I can't break and move on.
I quit my electrical engineering studies after two years, to start IT studies, because I felt IT stuff is something I want to do rest of my life. Now, after first semester, I feel I'm in the same place I was before starting IT studies...
I'm lost devRant... Any ideas for helping me changing my life?2
Guys I need your help.
Im a guy used to java development, so used to nice assisting IDEs.
Turns out my boss has a very complex and not very organized server written in Dlang which im supposed to add a semi-complex functionality in.
So far I have a Linux-Mint VM running a docker container able to build the system. Now I'm really not used to editing code without an IDE and all IDEs I tried on windows or Linux dont seem to work (maybe due to minimal knowledge in Linux and D).
Furthest I got was to get Visual Studio set up with Visual D, but it wasnt able to import the dub
project giving weird unsearchable errors.
Is there anyone out there able to get me started with an IDE? The server is on a github-repository, is a dub project and has a few dependencies.
I'm just totally lost.5
And here i am. Waiting outside, with a literally freezing weather, for my boss, to work on a freaking saturday. Halp!6
To link a html to CSS is it

Noob here. I'm an Android guy, looking to create a web app. Looking for pointers on where to get started learning. It's going to be enterprise level. Basically a hub of operations for small companies ~10-30 employees. Handle a lot of private info, see need to be secure.3
I need your help gaiz. I need an idea for a project. I have to be tech specific here as I am currently learning ASP.Net from my college curriculum. Pls halp.
A coder in need is a coder indeed.12
Halp meh, plz... I have run across a problem and I have absolutely no idea how to go about solving it...
So basically I need to decrypt a TDES encrypted Azure service bus message. Can be done in a straightforward manner in .NET Framework solution with just your regular old System.Security.Cryptography namespace methods. As per MSDN docs you'd expect it to work in a .NET Core solution as well... No, no it doesn't. Getting an exception "Padding is invalid and cannot be removed". Narrowed the cause down to just something weird and undocumented happening due to Framework <> Core....
And before someone says 'just use .NET Framework then', let me clarify that it's not a possibility. While in production it could be viable, I'm not developing on a Windows machine...
How do I go about solving this issue? Any tips and pointers?12
Is this a good design, or should I just put everything in one project so both the engine and the game logic compile to a single exe?10
I start my new internship in a week. Its Java (springboot), angular, and the most popular testing tech for each. I know some of each, and no testing. PLS HALP. Want to impress.11
I used vim, Sublime and most recently vscode. I had Webstorm lying around for about 2 months now, and I'd really like to switch to it but it's constant fight, and not one im winning either... :(
Any advice from fellow "devs who rant" ?6
Hey guys, need a lil help from any front-ender, I need to create a chart that allows me to show tooltips for specific timeframes and let's me click them and go to the specific url for that timeframe, I know this isn't SO but from my past experiences, I would rather ask here. I have looked at chart.js and other libraries but I'm not sure If chart.js has those capabilities.
I would like to achieve something like this : https://treo.sh/demo/1/...
Any tips are welcomed :)9
We're slowly migrating to VSTS (sigh) from Mantis and SVN for tasks management and code repo.
It's been 4 months now and we still have to move the code from SVN to GIT, asked management when they plan to do that and they still give no ETA, and when asked to make sure our commits stays intact after the transfer I got told "no need for that we're just gonna copypaste the last version of the source code". And most likely the local SVN server we're using is gonna be dismissed.
On top of that, by the way they want to use it, VSTS is being terrible for tracking stuff. I'm so used with other tools at home for some side projects and even though I expressed my concern about VSTS I got ignored over and over...
Bonus (not so) fun fact: branches are something mythic here so everyone else commits straight to master and it's a pain in the ass everytime, because people happen to break things most of the time.
And no, unfortunately this is not a small company.
Send halp please 😭
Does anyone know an easy to use server to run a java algorithm? Like I'm a total noob yet and I need something where I unzip the src folder and I get it up and running. Terminal use is ok. Each run takes me 8 hours and I need workforce...
I want my computer back for my personal projects :/2
If you could make one class from Java disappear from all applications right now, which one would it be and why?
The class/interface you pick would be replaced by a dummy class to prevent the application from having compilations errors and instantly crashing.
All existing JDKs would be affected and all applications already in production.
For instance, Serializable would be a good choice because it would break a lot of applications.
You cannot chose the following classes:
I'm bored halp2
I need an advise for my capstone project. I'm planning to make an online booking system for a ferry company. Planning to make it for android and ios and maybe for web too. Did some research and found about ionic. Looks amazing but not sure if it's the right tech to use for my plan. Also about the payment gateway, I want the customers to pay on the app or the website directly without redirecting them to other website. Not really sure if I can use paypal with this, also i need the system to accept mastercard and visa.
I did the research, so please no hate, I'm not asking for the code. I just want to know the right tech to use. I'm just super confused and lost right now.8
Hey guys, I am very keen to learn iOS Development. I looked up online and got most of what I needed for the development. But the main problem is, I don't have a Mac. And my machine isn't souped up for running a Hackintosh. So is there anyway I can do iOS development on Windows?
Also, someone told me I should go for Hybrid App Dev. I looked it up and tried it out, but had only one question. How do I integrate a Data Source in them?
Thanks in advance.5
Anyone ever tried Jelastic from Infomaniak? If so, what do you think of it? (UX, price?)
Currently struggling to test it in its free trial version, I can't reach anything because any browser I try can't find the IP address of the server name they generated. So, I don't know if I should keep pushing.
I'm currently trying to design my portfolio site, anyone recommends and tool for this?
I currently use gravit (https://gravit.io) it's nice but there are some bugs and the tools its offers is quite limited..4
