Family reaction story to me being a dev?
- My dad still refers to my profession as 'something in computers'.
- My older sister goes to her weirdo friends for technical advice because she thinks all I do is fill paper in printers (that's a long TL;DR story about a phone upgrade)
- My brother, a car mechanical genius thinks what I do is near God-like. He also races cars and can blabber on about the physics, aero-dynamics, weight ratios, etc and says "Oh, no way. I'm too stupid to do what you do." Then I'm like, "Dude, shut up, I can barely change my oil and you could replace an engine blindfolded", then he just laughs "Yea, probably."
- Baby sister just wants me to fix her phone. "Can you make <insert some random app> do <insert a random behavior the app was never designed to do>?". I'm like "Uh no, I didn't write Instagram", then she's like "I thought you went to school for computers?".
- My mom passed way (long battle with cancer). I'm sure she'd be proud, but still asking me to how to switch the channel so she could watch a movie on the VCR.
I can clearly see having this conversation with my mom.
Me: "Mom, why are you still using a VCR? I bought you a subscription to Netflix"
Mom: "Net what? Do I turn the dial to channel 2 or 3?"
Me: "No, its the Netflix button on the remote."
Mom: "Can't you come over and do this? I just want to watch my shows. Didn't you go to school to learn these things?"
Me: "No mom, that's not...um...never mind. I'll be right over."17 -
Got a job as a controls engineer. Told my parents.
Parents: Good Job!
Brother: Bro! How you make so much money?
Me: I went to a tech school and learned how to do technical stuff.
Brother: Oh... fuck that shit!
Everyone was really supportive. Been slowly gravitating from controls to more pure software. But a lot of the software I write is for controls and automation of machines.6 -
I often hear
You will be promoted as lead if you act like it or take charge
That is really stupid, there is difference between responsibly and effort.
Why would i put effort for things that i am not getting paid for ?
Fuck that6 -
~ 10yrs ago, Dad: I'm a dev, your mom's a dev. I paid for you to go-to business school... But you still became a dev. And your brother also wants to be a dev
Now after me and bro moved back with then bc of COVID. The house is basically WeWork on weekdays.
Good thing we're all devs so can with remotely.9 -
Mom and dad never really cared me being a developer claiming they did not understand what I do and used to talk down on me becoming a loser for spending too much time making video games when I was a kid.
Got depressed for a long time and stopped making games.
Brother comes drunk at 15 years old, got yelled but bc he was out partying and socializing he never got called a loser by them. Now they laugh at that experience.
But never apologized until I got a breakdown. Fb becomes big and now they want me to invent the next Facebook and telling me to be happy.8 -
wdym Family reaction story?
"When the truth eventually came out that I was a dev, my mom wouldn't stop crying and my dad still doesn't talk to me." ?1 -
Mom: “Is it a real company? Make sure you’re not getting scammed.”
Says the person who almost had her bank account wiped because a scammer installed malware on her laptop and convinced her to send a bank transfer.11 -
“One day you will find a real job”
It looks like if you don’t lift weights, move hands, sweat… and sit all day doing click click on keyboard, it cannot be a real job…3 -
Since my first high salary dev job in 2018 and until 2021, despite all my attempts to explain, my mom thought that I’m not actually a programmer but rather a scammer that just makes companies pay me salary for nothing. The argument that being a legit programmer is way easier than being a scammer mastermind fell on deaf ears.
Do you know why I said she thought so until 2021? Because I stopped talking to her in 2021 when she said that “being bisexual is a sin” and “I want to stop treating my cancer to die as soon as possible just to not see you anymore” after my coming out.4 -
“You should automate that”
Said by me at least once to every family member.
“But I can’t, it’s impossible!”
Said by every family member to me.
Follows a discussion about how easy its to automate the thing, ofter interrupted by me cause I don’t care enough to go in detail just to be asked to automate it.3 -
My family had no particular reaction. I wanted to be a programmer since school, and they knew it was my intended goal.
I guess, my uncle being a professional programmer was something that showed it is a good choice.4 -
Family reaction to me being a dev (and offering to replace their home/personal IT guy with google drive and a mesh wifi network):
We're going to hire an IT guy because they have more experience doing this kind of thing. BITCH, I'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 15 YEARS!!! -
Quite amazingly, yes!
as a matter of fact one of my parents is actually also in information technology or related field so there are very much aware of how in demand the job is and how difficult it is as well and the best part is a lot of my engineering friends are also switching to computer science and just because it is the better choice of because of how over saturated the engineering field is so yeah i think i have a better career choice than most of my peers
(PS: I used Speech to text here so forgive the grammar errors)1 -
Putting my phone away during the night so I have to actually get up to turn off the alarm was a gamechanger for me to stop hitting snooze.5
-
My parents didn't care at all. I guess they were just glad that they didn't have to pay for my expenses anymore, which they barely did anyway. Both have worked in physically demanding jobs and were extremely restrictive in the amount of time I could spend with computers.
Fucktards. -
That one time when i just got my first job and I was new to everything aaaaand my aunt have already started to pitch the idea of me making some company with one of my second cousins (because he was studying for some business degree and i was the tech one)
I mean, I understand the wish to do things "in family", but family and money should never mix imo2 -
I mean, as I don't have a job in that way yet I can't really say much.
Let's presume I have a job.
"My condolences, may god grant me mercy." -
Most had no idea what the web really was “under the hood” back then, so it was mostly indifference. But entry level salaries were awesome then, so also happiness and congrats from them for the folks I told how much I was making.

Is the grouprant broken for anyone else? Question and tag never seem to match for me, for example, this week it says "Tips for staying productive" / "Add tag 'wk247' to your rant", but it is linked to https://devrant.com/search/..., which is obviously a different topic.1
