Asked a client how they were getting on with the GDPR preparations, knowing they sometimes ask me to check documentation and such.
them: "Whats the GDPR"
me: "its the new European privacy law coming near the end of May, its ok, most of the work should be covered by your PCI DSS compliance paperwork with a few tweaks."
them: "oh, we just pay the non-compliance fee for that"
me: "wait what? well whose your data controller registered under the ICO required due to cctv being used"
them: "oh isnt that optional?"
me: "ok so heres my hourly, or i can quote for the whole compliance project"
I know not everyone is tech minded and GDPR hasnt been that well advertised, but jeez...2 -
I decided to make some new icons for Atom editor (the launcher/executable ones), because I liked the vscode-icons project.
Made the repo on GitHub and decided to automate making the icons for different OS using Travis CI.
Started writing the Python Script for Travis.
My google queries:
How to generate icons for Linux?
I can use SVG or generate a PNG, many libraries available. 👍👍
How to generate icons for Windows?
Generate PNGs of various sizes and pack in an .ico file. Easy enough
So far so good.
How to generate icons for Mac?
Mac needs a .icns file, a package of PNGs of various sizes. Libraries available but can be done on OSX only. 😫😫
Then I think, what OS does Travis use?
Oh, I can specify macOS in it 😁😁😁
Starts the build 😎😎
Travis doesn't support Python on macOS

Do you guys think it would make sense to add polls to the rant categories?
Not the first time I've seen questions like "What's the average age of devRanters?" or similar, and polls would make it a whole bunch easier to read/write answers in those cases!

- How open/active is the ecosystem and the open source scene?

Indigogo is to retail what ICOs are to he financial industry.
- some random people think of an idea (ICO = token, IGO = magical dick cream)
- they both rely on well made but completely horse-shit marketing material
- they both spam your sites with the same repetitive ads
- they both offer discounts for getting in early (aka give us money before we have designed or built anything)
- they both make outlandish and sometimes illegal product claims (ICO = Visa is a partner, IGO = magic dick cream does magic things)
- in the end most of both options ends up giving you nothing at all and just running away with your money
- best case scenario they both deliver a product that is utterly worthless and meaningless
- everyone is hunting for that one coin or product that is a not a total scam.
I don’t hate indigogo but they certainly are shady as fuck. I’ve rolled the dice on then 4 times and got scammed on 2 of them. It’s basically a crap shoot.1 -
In a few weeks, we’re going to launch our ICO with a working MVP. As the lead developer for this, I’m nervous as to how people will scrutinize my work.1
