You think developing websites cross browsers is hard
Try developing emails.
tables, inline css, Outlook developers on drugs, Gmail developers trying to get high, and abandon most of the things you know about modern web standards24
My boss just got a call from a client because he needed to install an outlook plugin for them.
In the call he needed to explain them how to install teamviewer like
Boss: just install the teamviewer software on your computer
Client: the what?
B: teamviewer. its a software giving me access to your computer to install the software
C. ok and how will i do that?
B: go to their website, download and install it
At this point he needed to explain them EVERY FUCKING 'next' button
in between they needed to switch to skype with a video call and my boss explained them 3 times to click the green phone to accept the call.
at ome point when there was a delay while installing the client really asked my boss (a senior web dev) to fix their printer.. I looked at him with a huge grin and never saw him with such a fucked up face.
At the end he ended the call telling them he has a meeting now and they need to call back later (then they will get a real support call they have to pay for)
btw the "meeting" is going to McDonalds for lunch
I really had to control myself to not laugh out loud while this call4
Project Cortana: Day 1
I have seen a lot of people switching to Linux or other services to get away from all the data collections. It makes a lot of sense as no one would want their data to be sold without their consent.
But I am going to do something different. My aim is to integrate with Microsoft apps as much as possible and review the experience. So here is what I have done so far:
* Use Cortana in desktop and mobile (Android)
* Use Microsoft launcher in mobile
* Outlook as primary email provider (I was already using them as my default provider)
* Use Microsoft To-Do and calendar to keep track of things
* Use OneDrive to store all my files (I am moving them from Google Drive)
* Use the default Mail app on the Windows 10
* Use Onenote (I was using Evernote before)
* Use Edge on desktop and Mobile
* Use Skype instead of Hangouts
It's day one but I think I have already found it quite useful. For example:
* Adding reminder is much easier. I get them on both desktop and mobile which is nice.
* Mail app has been really useful. Especially the focused inbox really helps to get rid of the clutters. Also, I can immediately add a mail to the calendar (like Inbox by Google) which is really helpful.
* One of the features of edge that I have found really useful is that you can send web pages from mobile to desktop in one tap. That is extremely useful.
So far I am loving it.
Also, I tried to make sure that I am not sharing my data with third-party apps as I have turned off "relevant ads" feature.54
So python, who knew it could automate a lot of crappy tasks 😎
Actually I did, but god it’s so quick and easy to implement than expected.
I have a new formed respect for python devs after my day of web crawling and ftp transfers and outlook mining 😘7
So day 2 of my python automations.
I have spent 6 hours and a lot of stack overflow “research” to saved myself 45 minutes a day with file downloads (web & ftp and outlook emails), excel spreadsheets and data manipulation macros, all stored in a nice tidy zip file at the end.
Now to find a way to send to a web server for digestion 😎
And all of this in a poor 90 lines 😧
God damn why didn’t I look into this earlier?2
Not day passes by that I don't think who the hell thought it would be a good idea to have Ctrl+R shortcut on web version of Outlook for replying to email.. 🙈6
The interface for time input in outlook Web on mobile is driving me crazy!! It's not as if there was a built in control that is well supported in all modern browsers.... Right
1. You can't tap on an hour to select it
2. You can only select by scrolling
3. The scrolling is "smooth scrolling". So you have N O fucking chance to select the time slot you wanted. After too much time has passed you just give up and accept that your meeting will be at 09:57
4. In order to go up in time you constantly activate the"pull to refresh" feature of Chrome.
I'm definitely no mindless MS hater but this I cannot tolerate.6
Going back home for the holidays means becoming tech support for pretty much the whole family, unluckly.
As soon as I enter my grandparent's home, my grandpa says "Could you print some emails?". I open his laptop, and I start sweating as soon as I see the Windows XP logo popping up. He (obviously) doesn't remember his password, and the only way to access his (mostly defunct) web mail service is Outlook 2003. For some reason, the web mail provider's POP3 server dies, and i spend half an hour trying to explain it. I ended up leaving with him saying "Why are you even going to a computer engineering university."
Moving from a G-Suite company to one that uses Exchange 2016 is like stepping into a shiny time machine with only one working gear... reverse.
Spam filtering is as primitive as classified ads in print newspapers.
Outlook Web is as primitive as using a printed phone book.
I haven't seen this crap since 2004 and it appears NOTHING has changed since then.
So I just got to relive a portion of my early college days for the third time this year. First being when my dad asked if there was even a job available for me to be studying web development for, 2nd, when he tried to talk my cousin into an ME job close to home that paid a quarter of what the ML job he had already been given out in cali.
This time however it was my mother surprisingly. Another cousin of mine decided she didn't want to continue pursuing a nursing degree. Mom said she was considering accounting instead since she's always like math, to which I made the comment, "well why don't she consider computer science".
"But she doesn't like computers and accounting has always been a good career choice."
"In the past sure, but future outlook is that they're going to be nothing more than glorified bookkeepers and paid as such. And using a prewritten computer program and writing a computer program yourself are completely different things."
"Well she can always use it to keep the books for her dad's business...."
Before I continue allow me to add some context to that statement. My mother is a soon to be a retired public school teacher, 10 years or so teaching 6th grade math and another 10 not even in a specific classroom, rather coaching new teachers on how to do their job.
Along with that she spent 3, maybe 4 years doing the accounting via quickbooks for the gravel pit my dad backed my uncle on, and despite the recession, not having an accounting degree and, most importantly, the extraordinary attempts my uncle made at running that business along with his logging business into the ground, she managed to keep the books balanced, taxes filed and ultimately the company out of the red for as long as there was rock in the ground to be mined.
And then some even because my shit for brains uncle decided to take his own "samples" and convince my dad to keep the pit going when me and every other hand out there was telling him every day that we were pulling nothing but sand out of there, sand that we have still yet to sell. (thinking of taking a dozer and carving out a giant amphitheater out of it since it's just sitting there piled up. Whatdya think, probably just collapse back over the course of a week? 😒)
So anyway you'd think with all that she'd realize that the need for certified accountants was dwindling. Or even that maybe, regardless of whether they like it or not, accountants use computer software to do their job.
Welcome to mississippi 21st century, where even the highly educated don't even remotely understand what a computer is. But I digress...
"Mother, you haven't needed an accounting degree to file one company's taxes in years and that's going to become even less so in the off chance that the dickheads in washington pull their head out of their ass and pass the bill to simplify the tax code. The only "accounting" jobs that will exist in ten years will be the few offered from financial software companies".
Paraphrasing and adding color of course, my mother would slap the shit outa me if I used that kind of language around her.
"Son why do you want to start an argument about this?" 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Ok so first of all I led off with a statement that you of all people should know to be true and second the argument that your trying to make is based on facts that haven't been relevant since turbo tax come out with their small business package.
But I didn't say that, rather just the word whatever because anytime I get of accused of "starting an argument" that means that she's still not going to listen despite not having any ground to stand on.
Instead I drive home, pull up the link for automate the boring stuff with python and send it to my cousin saying that it should help her with her homework if that's the degree she ends up choosing to pursue. Also added to not be intimidated by the idea that it was a "computer language" because for the bulk of it (at least in that book) the code was written in a functional style and would be a lot like learning basic algebra. Even sent her a couple examples.
Intrigued would mildly sum up the conversation that followed. To add a quote for further illustration "wow that is so cool, I always did like math. I never would've imagined."
Guess mentioning computer science as a possibility wasn't such a far fetched idea for her after all 🙄
Empty white page, 1 line of text:
"The custom module does not recognize this error"
Refresh, all good. Exit, enter again in an hour:
"The custom module does not recognize this error"
Then why the hell is there a custom module for errors for fuck's sake? Microsoft, just let the error pass through in that case, so we can read it.
Some self-disrespecting dev wrote that with a gun to their temple.
P.S. Don't ask why I use Outlook web1
LORD AM I PRON TO THESE KIND OF PEOPLE AS A DEV!!!?

Can someone example to me why do people use a VPN when not on public wifi? Like you are already at home with your own private network.
Like the moment you log into Facebook or Twitter or medium or to check your Gmail/outlook whatever, all you are doing is making is making it very clear to the host companies that you are inconsistently paranoid. Because all the sudden the person who's home address is in Seattle, work and home phone are in Seattle and all of their communication is done with people in Seattle. Has their web traffic location encrypted unknown.
Yeah your packets might be encrypted, but you are still spreading enough self identifying information by merely existing on the web.
At the end of day it seems more like a illusion of safety that these VPN sell. At the cost of a good dollar and slower internet speeds.
Unless you got some actual trade secrets and sensitive information, the f is the point for you to use one?17
outlook 2016 is so buggy and always show you have unread emails when there is none and no unread box as usual to be. the theme and layout xan mass up by itself, good job MS office team, u finally did a good job to show native app can be as buggy and ugly as web version of outlook. if you have not upgrade please DON'T4
Someone posted a link to a 30-day-security-challenge here on devRant some time ago and I just thought well, why not try to migrate away from the big companies - I've been using OneDrive as my only cloudstorage since the time when it was called SkyDrive and I've been hosting my Emails at outlook (via Live Custom Domains, a service that does not even exist anymore) for about 8 years now. Since I've always been lazy and since exchange activesync is a great feature if you have multiple calendars and want to sync them and your contacts to several devices I never tried to switch but now I am half done with migrating my data to my own nextcloud installation and my emails to my own mail server - since I don't want to loose the exchange functionality I am also setting up Z-Push and oh boy, this thing is bitching around but my webmail is already nicely integrated into nextcloud, IMAP / SMTP is up, configured and secured (still have to mess around with spamassassin as this email adress is floating around the web for about 10 years now). The only things to do is to get Z-Push work with STARTTLS and the card/caldav backend running and then the basic setup should be done.
I am just wondering if someone could hand me over a guide on how to sign / encrypt emails (GPG?)
