Me: "You should go with this other option for the software. It's cheaper and you can do more."
Client: "No. This more expensive and less-capable thing I chose is better. We'll make it work."
[several weeks pass]
Client: "This isn't working. Why didn't it work?"
Me: "You have to upgrade to a more expensive plan, or switch to the other solution I told you about."
Client: "No. We'll make it work."
Oh boy its actually embarassing...
I was in a cosplay event, when I realized I only have 30 minutes till I check in for my first day in the job as a support agent.
I never had the time to change because of traffic and I was commuting so I spent the next 9 hours in side the company premises wearing a japanese schoolgirl uniform.
...I got quite everyone's attention, even the HR... ( well at least the HR just reprimanded me about that >_<)
Note to self: remember to give yourself 30 minutes more of allowance....37
Why should you sing RAID controllers a soothing song before turning off the lights?
They're afRAID of the dark.9
Normal programmers cheer up when their code runs,
Haskell programmers cheer up when their code compiles.4
Ok, who among you crazy people came up with this idea? https://userinyerface.com
That website is the UX equivalent of murder 1. It took skill, planning and a very special brand of crazy to create.10
It hurts my brain when people use him as an example of successful drop outs.
For starters, this dude's a literal fucking genius. The average person that considers dropping out is far away from the level of intelligence that Bill had when he dropped out.
average_person != bill_gates15
So I've gotten a new second favourite piece of software. It's called Synergy and it makes it possible to use two or more different computers like multiple screens.
It's pretty amazing. Here's me playing a stage of Touhou on hard with it!
+ Death of Wix and WordPress (hopefully)
+ Abandonment of Java
- Software engineers trying to automate everything
+ Cloud blockchain AI containers that mine bitcoin with machine learning technology in high demand2
"Is it just me or is Youtube down?"
IT'S JUST YOU
THEY PICKED YOU OUT OF A BILLION USERS
AND TOOK IT DOWN
Sorry, good night.17
I would love to use Firefox as main mobile browser but it's icon on the bottom row breaks my eyes. Waiting for their rebranding.9
I love the fact in Linux that you can put fortune | cowsay every time you start a new terminal session22
I so fucking hate mosquitoes. At this point I'm seriously willing to lure all those bitches in and guide them straight to an electrical death. Problem is, I know how to generate super high voltage to char the fuckers right into smelly dust, but I don't know how to lure them in, or even find them manually, so let alone automatically. Even a chemical reaction we can electronically dispense to lure in the fuckers, but I have no idea what that chemical stuff would be. I'm not a chemist (yet). But if I can build it, fucking hell.. I would build a ton of them, weaponize my entire home and even build some spares to send off to fellow ranters. Because those parasitic bitches must DIE!! The only reason why they still exist after thousands of years is because we didn't kill the fuckers yet. I want to fucking kill the leeches, preferably in the most gruesome way possible.
So yeah. A shout for help to my fellow ranters this is.. perhaps even a collab. I have no idea about the stuff that draws those fuckers into their death. Any suggestions? Whoever can guide me to the demise of those parasitic pieces of shit, seriously.. if at all feasible, I'll build it for you and ship it!! Death to those parasitic blood-sucking bitches!!!26
The smallest utility made its way to being the largest companies must-have, the most critical part of the whole development landscape.
Using just plain C, Git can shred huge amounts of data insanely fast. It never gets old.
Git is a developer's scalpel.12
You can't have distributed free text search and not have elasticsearch in the same sentence.
A lot of analytics companies are running because of the elasticsearch aggregation framework. And search couldn't have been faster on such mass of data.
P.S. i used to be a solr fanboy, then i met elasticsearch. Kimchy knows the best.1
One of my favorite aspects of devRant has always been getting to learn more about the awesome people who use it. Beyond just the awesome stories posted by many here, one of my favorite ways to learn about and feel connected to the people here has always been desk/setup reveals. I personally love seeing different kinds of setups from all over the world, knowing that’s what the people here use to do their work and compute in general.
As an experiment, we want to try a few different things to highlight desk/setup/remote coding location posts. First, we’ve created the first devRant Instagram account, which is completely focused on developer desks/setups/workstations/remote coding. Please check it out here and follow: https://www.instagram.com/devdesks/
I want to use the account to bring more attention to the wide assortment of setups the awesome members of the devRant community post from all over the world. We’ll promote cool desk/setup/remote work images that are posted on devRant to the Instagram account for more exposure/additional audience.
Beyond that, I also want to try to come up with a way to better organize all of the desk/setup posts on devRant and encourage more of them. One kind we don’t see that often that I personally really enjoy is people coding with their laptops in locations that show the culture of their country or something special about the region they are from. Personally, I’m going to try to post some of those for where I live and work.
So how can you help with this effort? It’s easy! We encourage people to post their setups/working remotely pics and we will start featuring them on the Instagram account and hopefully elsewhere in the devRant app for some increased visibility/searchabilty over what we have now (since pics are kind of hard to search).
Also, we plan to make the weekly rant this week “post your setup,” so maybe wait until then to post, and you can work now on getting that awesome shot :) I know a lot of people here love photography like I do, so I think that part is fun too.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or questions about this, and I’m looking forward to seeing the desks/setups of many more devRanters in the next few days!
P.S. not a requirement, but one thing I think makes these photos better looking through a lot of them is when there is code visible in some way.49
Today I downloaded SpyKids (2002) movie to refreshen childhood memories.
Saw that scientists were using welding machine and chemicals to make artificial intelligence.6
roommate: lets start a startup!
me: sure, what do you have in mind?
roommate: nothing, I need a team first.
oh come on!
Tldr: I just FAILED AN EXAM because of my uni's SHITTIEST SERVERS EVER. YEAR AFTER YEAR THE EXACT SAME SHIT HAPPENS, THEIR SERVERS OR NETWORK FAIL HARD AND STUDENTS FAIL EXAMS BECAUSE OF IT, AND THEY NEVER FIX IT.
In the middle of a 3h exam at uni, using Matlab through virtualdesktop, when suddenly it stops working entirely. Trying to restart it, no go. A few other people are having the same issue as well.
After 20 minutes of waiting, one IT tech shows up saying people in other labs are having the same issue, big problems.
Ended up wasting nearly an hour waiting for shit to work again - which it did, but only when the extra time they had given us ran out.
Desperately tried to salvage what I could of my exam, but I don't think I did enough to pass.
This is not the first time it happens. Exam after exam, shit like this keeps happening over and over again, and every time some students get fucked in the ass and have to take the exam again - the next semester.
This is supposed to be one of the top universities in the country, and top 20 engineering schools in the world.
FUCK THIS SHIT7
Now I don't know if this'll help you for sure but if you are having trouble getting to sleep, try this app called "A Soft Murmur" that mimics ambient sounds and noises around you like a white noise machine. It really helped me out a lot.8
