Me: What the fuck is happening?!
*open Recycle Bin*
*see there is 3 node_modules folder*
Me: oh, okay sorry. Thats pretty normal.16
A: So are you the programmers of this software?
B: Yeah, I did the front end
A: Oh it looks so fantastic! It is simple, yet beautiful and responsive. Truly great design, you are so talented!
C: I did the back end...
A: Oh, you mean the server stuff?
I'm almost 29 and only have finished high school. I never new what I wanted to do until 7 years ago. Software engineering and development.
It took me a little while an some effort to find a employer who sees my potentials and is willing to invest in me.
Two weeks ago I decided to finally go back to school again (self study). Last week my boss told me he is proud and willing to share the costs.
Today my books arrived.
I am so excited and nervous!! November 5th (also my birthday) will be the first day of school.22
Hello beautiful. Finally got fiber installed. For my girlfriend and me. Not that we really need it... But you know...
(Wifi reaches up to 170 on 5Ghz)53
My parents recently got divorced and sold their house, so I had to go through all my old stuff and found this beauty! A pair of new bateries and it still work! Fuck Yeah!14
That moment when your boss is introducing the new guy and you are silently making a list of all the git repos you need to back up before he makes it to his desk.
Going on a vacation, so notify all clients that I won't be available during two weeks.
Client: well we have this huge presentation and here's a list of stuff we absolutely need for it
Me: sure I have a look.
Me: holy shit dude! That's gona take about 2-3 days. I'm leaving soon!
Client: it's realy critical to have them in a week as it's a very important presentation! Is there any way you can make it work? If we can do anything to help, just name it.
Me: well I'll do my best (planed 1 day for such rhings)
Me: *pulling a 15h day*
Me: here, all done budy! Did a 15h but now it's done, so do that presentation!
Client: oh, nice, but it wasn't that urgent
Client ssh in to the server, fucks shit up
Client: well I did a thing and now stage and prod is fucked, can you do anything?
Me: (knowing it will take 30min to fix) well... I try my best. Btw. I'll leave in a few hours and won't take my computer, so try not to fuck every thing again, okay?
*login screen appears*
*windows says "Welcome"*
*You have entered wrong password*
Are you fucking serious? Can't you even handle simple login flow? Why the fuck you display welcome screen before validating my fucking password? What the FUCK14
Always multiply your time estimate by Pi (an Irrational number). That way you're guaranteed your estimate will be irrational! (Just like the clients expection :P)6
You realize how beautiful it is to work in the back-end when...
"Can you move it down 1px?"
"Can you try this color?"
"Can you make it pop more?"
"Can you make the animation 0.01ms faster?"
On 30th December 2017, exactly a year ago, I was bored and was browsing Play Store where I was suggested devRant.
I was introduced to a new world of interesting people who had similar life struggles and challenges.
I ranted here a lot. Soon became fourth top user and currently the second I guess with all the digital votes.
What's more important is, I made so many good friends whom I shared so much about myself which I would never do in real life with anyone.
I don't even know the names and location of most of you but have learnt a lot from you all. The emotional connection is beyond words.
I am thankful to you people.
Last one year has changed me a lot. My stupid manager and the ass licker have taught me a lot on how to live in a corporate world.
And do you guys remember my crush about whom I used to be stressed a lot because I was serious about, but could not talk due to my shyness?
Well, just last month our mutual friend told me that she got engaged and possibly will be marrying soon. Yes, I am devastated. My friend helped me move on and taught me some skills. Lots of life lessons learned.
My priorities and aim in life have changed. I am clear about my vision.
I also used to crib about my shitty job and with all the lay offs, I have applied internally to another project with a role switch. I hope it goes well and I get the transfer.
Some things are fucked up, some are good while some remain as they are.
I am back here and will be ranting about my life and connecting with you all crazy heads because sometimes, the virtual life is better than the real life.
I not sure whether life is fun or sad because of ups and downs. But one thing for sure that things happen at right time with right people at right place.
Best things are never planned or anticipated.
Sometimes when you look back, it's all different. You never wanted it to happen, but you deserved it maybe because you being prepared for something.
Sometimes you do want to undo past but somethings are better left as they are.
You become a person you never wanted to be but have to because situations and circumstances force you to be. You regret but have no option or control over it.
Life is unfair and worst part is, it is never unfair in your favour.
Above all, life goes on.. it goes on...19
"Oh my God thank you! How'd you fix it?"
I did literally the first thing you always do: unplug that shit and plug it back in.2
I started a nee personal project few weeks ago. I named it SelfVPN. Its simply a VPN client that lets you create DigitalOcean droplets and install vpn server without opening DigitalOcean panel. You just need to add your api key in application.
It takes like 5 min to create new server and deploy vpn server. So I am paying hourly usage of vpn! Even if I don't destroy droplet it wont cost more than 5$ a month.
I am thinking to open source it. But code is too messy 😅 Here is the first look of it29
Not sure what hapend... On my laptop running Ubuntu 17.10, I just got a notification:
Problem occured: "Ubuntu is ready"
Not sure what to do now... :P8
Just upgraded to almost the exact same keyboard, only it has back-lighting 😅
Same manufacturer, keyswitch, layout and general appearance 😜11
Who else is coming down from a weekend personal projects high after realizing the work week starts tomorrow?
I just travelled roughly 10 years back in time. How? By crossing the border from the Netherlands to Germany. My mobile connection jumped from constant 4G to H / Edge / no connection at all, The wifi, where present is slow af. And I can't pay by card anymore as I'm used to. And most of all: The loading speed of DevRant is so slow with this data connection that I wanna rant about it itself, but I can't, since I don't have any goddamn connection >_<49
I'm such a fucking moron! I had a programing test at university today, there where two excercises and two hours time. Finished the first one within 20min, but couldn't crack the second one. As time went by, I got more and more nervous. My hands started shaking. I couldn't think straight. I should just have steped outside, ask for a bathroom break, whatever. But no, I wanted to solve it!
Went home after the timelimit. Sat down, wrote the same thing I had in my head, compile, test and would have gotten all the points. I was able to do in 20min when relaxed, what I wasn't able in 1h 40min.
the worst part of being the only back end developer in a small digital agency? to me is accomplishing something cool as fuck and nobody can really appreciate it8
Never underestimate the power of a decent chair!
Was staying at friend's for a couple weeks with a horrible chair - my back just spasmed so hard that I am physically unable to get up from bed. Thank god for devRant to keep me occupied throughout the night.
Stay safe kids3
I've open sourced my last personal project: SelfVPN. Simply, its a vpn client that you can create DO droplets and connect them easily.
Previous rant: https://devrant.com/rants/217909812
I have the absolute greatest and nicest front-end developer in the world.
Today I was being given all kinds of praise for putting something on a site that the client loved and it seems to be getting the conversions they want. I felt really bad taking the praise because I didn't design it. The front-end developer designed it for me and gave me a picture of what she thought the client wanted and I built it. So I passed on all the compliments to her and told her that everyone was super happy with it.
She accepted the thanks but then floored me telling me that she didn't feel like she did anything and that my job was more important. We started arguing about who was more important.
"I accept that your designs do nothing without my back-end code, but without your designs no one would ever use anything I made."
She responded by sending me a list of sites with terrible designs that people use daily. And continued to tell me how much more important back-end is than front end.
If she wasn't 1500 miles away I might have kissed her. I needed to hear that today.2
It's not a dev quiting but my brother who worked in parcel delivery at that time.
He was hired on a temporary contract but promissed from the beginning and in every discussion they had, that he'll get a permanent position after 6 moth, if his work is good.
Fast forward 6 months. They had a meeting and told him how satisfied they where with his work so naturally he asked about the permanent contract. Fuckers acted suprise and shit. Claiming to never have said any of it. However as they are happy with him and so "generous", they offerd him another contract for 6 months and told him, they could talk about a permanent one after that period.
He kind of has a temprament, so he got up, fliped them the bird and called them lying assholes and went home. He didn't show for the time left on his contract.
The funny thing about it he worked for the swiss postal service (which is owned by the state) but not directly but through this.company providing temporary workers (which is cheaper for them as they get a shitty salary compared to a full time employee with all the benefits).
Nice thing though, the accounting department still sent him a christmas bonus (he quit somewhere around mai...)7
So I've been MIA lately for personal reasons, but think I'm ready to get back into my coding and stuff :) Here's my arch setup that I've been working on recently.7
Fuck you gas company for back billing me 1500...I don't need you...built my own heating system...and with my managed pdu I can switch on remotely so its warm when I get home...so you can shove your heating app up your arse as well11
long && scam && rant?
At my parent's: phone rings..
Me: hi this is XYZ (in German)
He: hi this is ABC from Microsoft tecnical suport (strong Indian accent, sorry toall Indian devs who might feel offended, no intention)
Me: hi... (I'm learning for my exams and don't have a VM with Windows installed currently, so no time to "play")
He: we got some worrying data from your Windows computer. You might have a virus and we need to run a few tests to verfy it. Do you know what that is?
Me: yeah, a scam.
He: sorry, sir I didn't understand you, could you repeat?
Me: yeah, I know what " this" is. It's a scam, and we only deploy Linux here. (lie, we have Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as an iPhone, iPad and Android devices in the house, guess who is "support"...) But good luck with your next call.
He: (kind of friendly) oh. I see. Well have a nice day too.8
Can we talk about this for a second? I mean WTF, how is Windows XP still a thing. Wasn't there a ransomeware attack recently, so every last sys admin should have some motivation to upgrade their shit?
Sure, I hear you say, it's just an information display. No critical stuff.
Well guess what, it was at an airport. Most likely not connected to any critical infrastructur, but still it's a computer, stuck at the boot screen at 11 a.m. running windows XP, connected to an airport network.
And I was standing there like: fuck me!14
EXCEL YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT! don't get me wrong, it's usefull and kt works, usually... Buckle up, your i for a ride. SO HERE WE FUCKING GO: TRANSLATED FORMULA NAMES? SUCKS BUT MANAGABLE. WHATS REALLY FUCKED UP IS HTHE GERMAN VERSION!
DID YOU HEAR ABOUT .csv? It stands for MOTHERFUCKING COMMA SEPERATED VALUES! GUESS WHAT SOME GENIUS AT MICROSOFT FIGURED? Hey guys let's use a FUCKING SEMICOLON INSTEAD OF A COMMA IN THE GERMAN VERSION! LET'S JUST FUCK EVERY ONE EXPORTING ANY DATA FROM ANY WEBSITE!
The workaround is to go to your computer settings, YOU CAN'T FUCKING ADJUST THIS IN EXCEL!, change the language of the OS to English, open the file and change it back to German. I mean, come on guys, what is this shit?
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON ENCODING! äöü and that stuff usually works, but in Switzerland we also use French stuff, that then usually breaks the encoding for Excel if the OS language is set to German (both on Windows and Mac, at least they are consistent...)
To whoever approved, implemented or tested it: FUCK YOU, YOU STUPID SHITFUCK, with love: me8
- Arrrg! Lets try cleaning first.
- What the FUCK! How does the clean fucking project fail?!? Just delete fucking output you pile of shit!4
Finally got time to share my new laptop. I love its rgb backlight keyboard. I will buy a NVMe SSD and second monitor asap.7
I... can't... fucking... stop... adding... new... features... to my... personal... projects... Help.9
Yesterday a friend of mine asked if I could help her with an assignment. The goal was writing shortest path agorithm in excel. I told her I don't know excel or VB but I will look into it. I didn't even know that we can code in excel 😅 After 1,5 hours of research and coding I writed a well documented code that does the job (with n^2 complexity of course). I feel VERY motivated after this. Because I did well job at an unexperienced environment with a language that I don't know!
Tldr: my new favorite ide is excel.3
Moved in with my SO. No not Stack Overflow. Anyway. The hardest part about it is choosing a good Wifi name. We acctually need two names.
Edit: the perfect name would have a Star Wars reference in it.35
That cringe fest when non IT people throw random phrases related to IT which doesn't even make sense just to impress the audience7
17 minutes without single break. That was longest nightmare for me. I had to write 6 lines of code... You know how that feels. My fingers were bleeding and my eyes were burning. Oh maan, I don't even want to remember that hard days.
Fuck you you fucking fuck, why would you change an api without any notification?
Background: built an app for a customer, it needs to fetch data frlman external api, and save it to a db.
Customer called: it's broken what did you do?!?
Me: I'll look into it.
Turned out the third party just changed their api... Guess I should implenent some kind of notification, if no messages come in for some time...5
Client: But why is it so expensive to host a website? I mean you could host Wordpress on a cheap like 10$/month webspace, right?
Inner me: Bitch, you have a fucked up Symfony 2.1 website that only runs on PHP 5.3 plus a Wordpress site, with a lot of updates not done, plus you have a huge traffic at peak times, like once a week
Me: Well you know, the services you are running require a lot of resources...4
I think I've posted more this week on DevRant, than I have during the entire time I've had Facebook3
* User disables notifications *
* Windows gives a notification about disabled notifications *
Installed a custom ROM.
The emoji's here are much like the android blobs but they are slightly different. I think they're uglier/unnatural.
I WANT MY FUCKING BLOBS BACK 😤23
*recieves notofication from tinder*
*"somebody likes you. Swipe to find who blah"*
*swipes everyone to right*
Fuck you windows! We were watching a movie and windows accidentally restarted and started to update. I HATE YOU!3
Sometimes I wished there was no internet, computers etcetera and that the world would go back to the basics. When people from a village knew each other and married a girl from your village and lived in a wooden hut in the mud.
This all can be so much better than how life is at the moment. People ignoring eachother, fighting wars by killing thousands without actually fighting.
And yes I know some of us wouldnt survive it, Im not sure I would with my chronic kneepain. I cannot hunt because of it. I could be a builder or farmer maybe?29
two days before I complained of lower back pain. raised a concern in office as its due to long sitting hours and got a chair today with great lumbar support. :)3
Rant: THAT FUCKING CREATIVE AGENCY, THAT USES A FUCKING HOSTING PROVIDER, THAT DOESN'T OFFER SSH! GUESS WHO'S CURRENTLY UPLOADING 4000 FILES? BEST OF ALL EVERY 200-ISCH FILES THE CONNECTION GET'S REFUSED, TELLING, THERE ARE TO MANY REQUESTS (FileZilla is set to max 2 simultanious uploads, still the same)
FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING FUCK OF A CRAPPY DEPLOYMENT PROCESS.6
I'm a "lefty", I defended the Python "Master/Slave" stuff, but honestly, what the fuck is this CoC at Linux? (https://lulz.com/linux-devs-threate...)
It it isn't "fair" as people who are indicated don't get a "fair trial", I'm all for enabling women, PoC, and folks of the LQBTQIA+ community, but simply kicking people out you don't like isn't the fucking solution! What a fuckup.
If there are people supporting the CoC, please let me know your views and why, as I simply can't understand it.19
Forgot my headphones today, had to listen to stupid people on the train and now can't concentrate while writing code! Fuck!4
Cs Student. We currently have a course on algorithms, where we have to implement something in Java, test it with some sample inputs and in the end submit it to an online judge, so far so good. So why a rant? Well there's this one person, who strugles with programing and asks me a lot of questions. Usually I tell her, could you send me your code, so I can have a look at what doesn't work/where you made a typo/what ever. My thoughts: let's just copy it my IDE, take a look at the error message, and that should do it.
Guess how I got the code: As a few photos, taken by her mobile phone (as the code doesn't fit on one screen...)! Just send me the fucking file, or post it to gist.github.com or pastie.org or what ever fucking code sharing tool you want! Make a fucking git repo, I'll even live with SVN or just a .txt file by mail. But for the love of Linus Torvalds, stop sending me crapy pictures of your crappy code! For fucks sake!16
Mother fucking SQL, fuck mathematicians, fuck every thing!
Enter SQL, there you need to put `SUBSTRING(input, 1, 1)` because fuck every one! Fucking math guys who developed relational algebra on which (most) databases are based on (I love you for it, but come on you fuckers!), Decided that the first character should be at position 1...
On my way home, just noticed, that the display in the train, is only sorting the connections in the trainstation by time, but not by date. (SBB in Switzerland, in case you're wondering)5
When you fix your mates PC and upgrade windows on it and month later he comes back because his scanner is really slow, his wife doesn't understand English anymore and cat decided to leave his cat life to become full time florist at local bakery shop.2
I really want to.
I want to get away from Windows.
But I have yet to find a distro that works.
Today I tried again again.
I found out Linux Mint released version 19.
Snapshots integrated. Cool. I will try it.
Installed with Cinnamon. Looks nice. Everything is running fast.
Aaaaand I hate the mouse movement...
Why is there no 1:1 movement? Is acceleration on? Does not feel like it.
Ok. We can fix this right?
Opened the Mouse settings.
There is no way of deactivating mouse acceleration. Only customizing the amount of acceleration. What?
Ok customize it. No change at all.
Try extreme settings. Nothing.
Google for a solution. Says I should install dconf-editor and change settings there.
Install it, change the settings. Hey it works!
It is far from perfect but I can live with that.
Now the scroll wheel is so slow...
But there is no setting at all? Not even in dconf-editor.
Google the solution. Need to install imwheel and configure it. Really?
Okay will do. I wanna use this.
Finally. Mouse works as it should.
After all that, why is my lap so hot? Fucking hell the cpu seems to be burning.
I am out! Back to Windows!24
Got a back-lit keyboard and I'm blown away by how awesome it feels and looks over a normal ass keyboard! 😍7
First Hackathon ends today. Long story short: I was the only programmer of the team, we only had 2 days to develop it (of which we spent the first day doing research, so 1 day of coding), so guess what it's shit.
I basically took a bootstrap theme, hardcoded some data. Put some js on top for interactions and a node js backend, to interface some APIs. Just by looking at the code you'll get cancer, but the others of the team where impressed, how good it looked an worked...
Let's hope the judges aren't familliar with coding as well (our challenge got two judges whereof one works at a bank as some guy whearing a suite and sponsoring stuff... Ao chances should be ok)
Honestly fuck this. Not one team (afaik) has pfoduced anything close to being finished...10
Got offered a project to develop e-commerce site. Bespoke. E-commerce. Sage pay. CMS. 4 days. When I said it's basically impossible, got told that the company was offered the same solution by an Indian developer but in 2 days, so it shouldn't be a problem to do it in 4.6
Didn't had to fix anything (so far). But took my dev laptop to show all the projects I've been working on to the dad of my girlfriend and he showed me his projects.
He's not mainly a dev, but an electrical ingenieur. He designs his own pcb boards (with 8bit processors on them, as "that's more than enough power to do almost anything!") and then programs that stuff with basic (he writes his own firmware for it).
He also creates desktop application to get data off the devices using Delphi.
Love that guy and have a shittln of respect for him!1
Thanks everyone, another follow up:
After successfully securing the interview and going through it like a boss I'm starting my new job on Monday. Bless y'all6
Showed my boss the front end I was working on and when he asked about the back end I rotated the monitor backwards.
What the fuck Visual Studio? Last day my app was compiling succesfully. I DID NOT CHANGE ANY SINGLE FUCKING THING BEFORE I LEFT OFFICE. Today it refused to compile. It didn't even show the source of error, just says missing a reference.
- Clean solution, rebuild. Compile error
- Close VS re-open project. Compile error.
- Restart computer. Compile error.
- Close VS re-open project. Compile succesfully.
WHAT THE FUCK DID JUST HAPPEN? I could't believe it if it didn't happen to me. Is this shit compiling just by luck or what?6
$ npm install ...
$ added 10 packages from 7 contributors and audited 21813 packages.
I realized that after some point you don't even think about your project dependencies growing. Because even adding 10 packages, it looks like it doesn't even changes the total number of packages. 21813, 21920, 21980... Does it even matter? Fuck.7
Decided to delete devRant and reddit for a few months. Now I'm back, and the first thing that greets me on both is Light Mode 🤢
Thank God that I haven't cancelled my devRant subscription. Once you go black you never go back! 😏7
Prestory and afterstory:
Today I have slept for around <2 hours and had to drive to my college.
The real shit happens right now.
During these almost 2 hours, I have dreamed about going back in time, but being limited on the same day's hours.
In other words... It was e.g. 16 o'clock and the time travelled back into the past. Like into a "0830 ish" morning. The day would then come to an end and start with the next day. For example from Monday to Tuesday.
I was able to look into the future whenever I wanted to.
Even though I was driving my car in the first gear, it would drive into the reverse direction.
Time suddently switches direction and everything is going as it should be. Greeting people in the streets as I would do normally.
And all of the sudden time decides to switch its direction again and I have to do things in reverse.
At some point I found something like a hidden room which had a door. I opened it and went into the "room" (it was a special place. It had no walls at all). It had a door at the other side of the room. I went through it and saw another one in the last room. It felt like, if I decide to go through that door, I would instantly die. I therefore moved all the doors back into the dream world.
Such a confusion gave me a fucking headache lol.
After waking up from such a fucking complicated dream, time irl felt fucking weird lmao.
My alarm began to do its job. It tried to wake me up at 6:30 am, at 6:45 am and at 6:50 am.
But all the time along it felt like it began to wake me up at 6:50 am down to 6:30 am.6
Just deployed version 0.0.1 of my holiday project to production.
It's a pie "attached" to some speakers, mounted below the kitchen cubord. So far it only runs a spotify connect on it and you're able to play music there while cooking/cleaning.
I'd actually like it to also be able to just play regular music, either from a smartphone or a computer in the network. (It's connected by wifi to our lan). Any advice on what software I could install on it to achive that? i'd prefere to enable it for devices on the lan and have bluetouth dissabled, but I'm actually not sure if that is even possible. So yeah any advice to that? Or any other things you'd install on it?
I know, that I need to do some "cable management" back there :P10
I had an interview with a company that works offshore (works for a big silicon valley company) for an internship program. I liked their bosses vision and how he treats his coworkers. After 1 hour technical interview I asked how much they pay for internship and they told me they are not paying anything. And they said hey we are teaching you how things works. Wait... What? Atleast you can pay my transport and food fees. Fuck you and fuck your company. If you don't pay me a single fucking penny, I am not working with you. There is local laws to pay me some money. If you don't care about laws, I wont care about your fucking company. Burn in hell.5
*Creates a rest api that runs on localhost:8080*
*Creates React front end that runs on localhost:3000*
*Sends a GET request to api*
*Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy...*
Thats my fucking dev environment and its my local fucking host! Let me just send a fucking request to my own fucking machine you piece of shit! Why the fuck they didn't add an exclusion to fucking localhost?!?11
Fuck you guys. Honestly most of the rants i've read concerning python and their abolishme t of sait terms where fucking butthurt. "What virgin suggested this", "people shouldn't be offended, it's just a name" and so on.
I do agree with every one saying a name shouldn't matter (readability is a different story! However parent/child or producer/consumer IMHO preserve that). So why are you fucking offended when it is changed to parent/child or produver/consumer? Does it affect you in any way? You know there's the `sed` command, plus IntelliJ (and most other IDEs) have a quite good support for renaming/refactoring stuff.
By reacting this way, by beeing offended all you do is proving the point. Words can offend people. I personally don't care how it's called. So far I always used master/slave and didn't think twice about it. But then again if someone of my coworkers or friends would feel threatened by these words, I try to avoid them. Naming diesn't matter to me, nor the compiler. So fuck, if it makes people happy or feeling save then lets change it.
What the fuck do you gain by sticking to those terms anyways?19
Who remembers winamp? Well... We still use it in our bar once a year
Backstory: I help to organize a small openair festival once a year and to finance that we run (amongst other things) a bar once a year.
Music is still supplied by good old winamp! The nostalgia is strong.3
Long time ago i signed up to Devrant. After this i relocated... Finally bought me a new #Toy :)
Happy to be back and to see some old names 🙂🙂🙂7
Any alternative to Googles reCAPTCHA?
Backstory we have a contact form, in a bootstrap modal, loading the form as an ajax request. The form has (as of today) a captcha, as we where getting a lot of spam.
Guess what it does on safari? Right... It renders outside the modal and since there's no need for scrolling, bootstraps modal adds an overflow hidden to the body. Results in non submitable forms on some resolutions.
Any idea on how to fix this, or other captcha systems we could use (it's a Symfony app).4
First day of vacation after 5 months of overtime... aaaaand I'm stuck in bed with a back issue.
Can't even code all the things I had in mind. Nice holidays incoming yay...
At least I have devrant.7
It's a job description for an entry level Software Developer role at Apple.
Basically they want
- A Front end dev
- A back end dev
- An iOS expert
- A Gimp/photoshop designer
- A streaming data expert
- An Oracle/Teradata expert
- A Kafka expert ( Not shown in the picture)
And on top of that the guy should be able to learn new tech faster.
Do they want a developer or a fucking terminator?6
!dev && rant
Can we talk about banks? Those fuckers! Suposed to keep our money save and be competent... They today gave me the biggest scare of my live and I've run one an update query on a prod db without a where clause! (Okay I knew we had a backup but still pretty scarry moment!)
As a few know, besides being a dev I help to organize a small openair music festival here in Switzerland. The openair was this weekend. Every thing wen't well, until I checked our ebanking account today. There was only 2/3 of the money that should be there. A quick call to the bank and they told me, nope they never received it. As we've thrown it in a secure locker during the night, we didn't receive any receipt or something like that. It took those fuckers 3.5 hours to actually go and check the looker, just to find the remaining money in the corner of it. What the fuck people, can't you open your fucking eyes and not give me a fucking heartatack? I thought you guys are professionals!
Note locker: we get a key to open it from the outside, place our payment during the night, as soon as we close it, it falls inside a vault, so there it's a pay in only system, for lack of a better word, I called it locker.
My heart is still beating like mad, because of them.4
Rant: Wifi in Italian AirBnB, They use 3 wifi repeater to get internet from one house to the next, I guess you can imagine the speed3
!dev && education && ~German (survey is in German)
My girlfriend is doing her "A-levels" (the things you do to qualify for university). In Switzerland it's called Matura and in Germany Abi.
However for her final assignment she has to do a survey. Since it's in German, probably only People from Switzerland/Germany and Austria will be able to participate. However if you understand German feel free to participate!
The topic of the survey is "taboo topics" and the survey can be found here: http://we03sl.findmind.ch (takes less than 5 minutes)
Thanks a lot for your time (:17
Happy first of may, happy international worker fight day to all the devs out there. Unighted we stand, duvided we fall3
I never understood how people could choose back-end over front-end or vice versa. To me it's all just pieces of the same pie... and I want the whole damn thing.5
On the 9Gag Android app, you can "scroll" up and down by using the volume up/down, if the music isn't playing. (I think you have to enable this in the setings).
I find this quite convinient, and would love to this here too.
@dfox and @trogus5
Hi guys its needtoroll
I was gone for a few months but now I am back and ready for more.
However I dont have anything to rant about I have an awesome new boss and a challanging project in an interessting stack.5
Finally back at home (after having some trouble with Deutsche Bahn).
It is cold and cloudy here.
It feels so weird to use a laptop. I was there (in Turkey) only with my phone, typing this post on my laptop. The screen is so god damn big.
My bed is very soft. My kitten got very strong and fluffy. He looks more muscular now lol. And it seems like he missed us :3.
I missed him and I missed my car that I did not like like a month ago. I really understood how much value it has. Besides of that my mind is clean now. It was like meditation.
Fuck that pussy ass description.
How was your day, fellas?7
almost a year ago, i have no idea of what i was doing at work cause everything was new: coding languages, databases, clients, co-workers, etc. i had 0 experience and i am back here again on devRant after 3836382 years and i am proud to say i've learnt so much and have been promoted to Project Manager. im happy asf and i am now ready for another round of dev rants!14
I'm a CS student at a university in the global top 10. We currently have two courses using Java, where we have to submit our work to a judge program. One of them is running Java 7. the second one Java 6! Come on, what year is it? Just update your fucking software and the assignments, you lazy fucks!
First rant. Am I doing this right?5
Seeing Mark Zuckerberg multibillionarie. I am poor af (Still student btw). Also looking Linux kernel at GitHub.2
More than 3GB ram is useless on android phones. Change my mind.
I bought cheap lg g5. It has 4gb ram (my old phone had 1gb ram). I have opened chrome with 4 tabs, an AAA game, devRant, Instagram, a vpn app, android settings and I'm listening music. There is still free 1,2 gb ram. Also this is not my everyday usage. I use maximum 3 apps at same time.28
<rant>So I'm new to the having-meetings-every-waking-moment-of-the-day thing... Just wondering if anyone is supposed to get anything done??
Or are we supposed to gather more and more work to do during each meeting?
The only times I've been able to do work is when I can mute the mic or say I'm in a "lunch meeting"!!
Does this happen to everybody???
!rant this is just a shoutout, how fucking happy I am. Clean code valued over fast but hacky push of features!
Backstory. I work for a startup. Long story short a guy with an idea needed a developer. I've worked for about a year without pay but now since we're live I get paid. Recently a new field of bussiness came up. I told tge guy with the idea (a.k.a. my boss) that we either could just "hack" the current code to just make it "fit" well kind of... Or refactor our main code base, as requirements where changing at least monthly and we just built on top of the monolith.
Don't get me wrong. It still isn't perfect. However I was able to refactor the main business logic for the last few days, as he understood, it's an investment into the future.
P.S. On another note: happiness or happyness? :O1
Worst Monday ever.... going back to work today after a lovely week off. Just checked my emails before I get to the office and I’m already offended by the amount of ‘stupid’ that has happened whilst I’ve been away. Wish me luck, I may have murdered someone by the end of the day!3
Sometimes I wonder how software development in (bigger) teams worked in the 90s.
Take the first Pokémon games for example. It was the mid-90s and the final product would be Assembler code that goes onto a cartridge with limited space.
I believe version control systems didn't really exist back then (Git & Mercurial: 2005, SVN: 2004). So probably people took backups of the chunks of code they worked on, copied around a stitched-together code, threw everything together at the end of the day, etc. etc. ...
Does anyone here know if there is some kind of documentary about that topic or did anyone here experience that first-hand?
It would be really interesting to see how that stuff worked back then 😊11
To all the cheap bastards out there, especially those who are here for a long time, become a ++ supporter and help to keep devRant running! (Okay that might was a bit dramatic, but still, keep it running as it is)
It was mentioned by @dfox here: https://devrant.com/rants/1467574/... that the numbers of the suporters program have gone down slightly and that devRant still looses it's creators @dfox and @trogus money.
If you're working in IT, you can't tell me, that you can't spare this little! Don't be cheap.
It's a different story, if you're still in school. I can even understand, that you don't have a dime to spare as a student. But when you're working (fulltime) as dev, tester, pm, recruiter, whatever and receiving a salary, then you can afford it.
So come on! Girls, guys, this is our home. It's awesome! Show your appreciation and hit that suporter button. It's a tiny amount every month, but if we all pull together, we can cover their server costs! Become a ++ suporter.
(And don't say we should create a crowd funding campaign, where you donate once, otherwise we'll be in the same situation in a few months, a bit every month on the other hand helps in the long run!)7
!dev && !rant
@dfox and @trogus my so was like, wait... Is this like a thing to complain? That's awesome!
Wait let me guess it's for developers only, right? Why can't we normal people have this? :O8
What the fuck! Just witnesed this at university. The guy in question is in the same cs course as me. Using edge, okay. But searching for a picture on google (a icon in that case), copy it to memory, open powerpoint, paste it, manipulate the color aellsettings to make it gray and then save it from powerpoint? That's not how you fucking do it! Fucker!7
When i was younger, lesser experienced and more naive than now; i got away with a lot of things. By lot of things i mean security flaws in my applications and overall architecture. I realise now i could've so easily been pawned.
Not that i claim to be totally secure even now, or would ever. It is a process, slow and painful one - Learning.
What i wish to point out is the role of favorable probability (non believers would call it luck). Security is so much about it. You get away with so many things for so long. And bang one day the roll of dice is unfavorable. On such rare occasions, just look back and wonder - damn i should've been breached long ago.2
Where to look for an UI/UX person?
Backstory: I currently work at a small startup. So far our website is just a bootstrap theme, slaped together by myself, so you could say, it's far from optimal. Especially on mobile devices.
Where would you guys look for a UI/UX person? Probably on a freelance basis. Did you have good expiriences in the past with a particular site/service?3
First time doing web development for front end AND back end and I just want to say...
FUCK YOU YOU SHITTY ASS BOLLOCK DRIPPINGLY RETARDING CACHE, WHO YOU LOAD THINGS I NO WANT YOU TO LOAD...WHY THO?...
Well that was 2 hours of my life wasted....8
Do you remember how they say, you won't notice how much you miss something, until it's gone? Well this Island (Guadeloupe) is as beautiful as it can be! However the internet connection sucks. Big time!
Plus the humidity killed my laptop (or at least part of the keyboard including the keys I need for the partition unlock, which means no laptop until I'm home and replaced the keyboard.
I didn't bring it for work but to be able to look up stuff, maybee write some (non dev) stuff and such...
But to be honest since this vacation is so relaxing, I'm not even really mad. Strange.11
Theres atleast one fucking bastard that writes comments like "2018?" "2018???", "september 2018?", "still listening in 2019??" in every fucking song video in youtube. Fuck you braindead useless pile of shits! Yes its fucking 2018 and why the fuck you just write it there?? Why the fuck somebody even cares and likes that kind of trash comments?!? Fuck you bunch of wasted human cells. I want to kill all of those fucking fuckwits. STOP FUCKING COMMENTING DateTime.Now.Year IN EVERY FUCKING SONG YOU MOTHERFUCKER CUNTS!5
Was scrolling youtube last night, not expecting much, found this video about web apps. Holy mother of linus torwalds, just watch the fucking web assembly part. https://youtu.be/MiLAE6HMr10
I'm not trying to say web assembly will be a good thing or dot net is, but holy crap!
Edit: wasm is the second topic in the video3
It's almost 4 on a Friday and my coworker just left early. The only thing before leaving was to tell my boss about a problem in production...
Leaving me to fix it...
"Hey, I just heard about a problem in production. Can you fix it before you go?"
Not cool dude... Not cool.6
Client just asked why no progress has been made this week and refuses to accept it is a result of them not answering my emails or providing content. I made a DevRant while I wait for a response!
I guess it wasn't as URGENT as the subject line suggested...2
Remember to exercise kids!
My back is dying. Work equipment is great, but at home my posture is screwed from my chair not going high enough and my desk being too high for my arms to be parallel.4
Sorry I'm on my computer during the meeting but I can multitask I swear!
(I can definitely write code and troubleshoot with other devs on Skype, while you're talking)
I never said I was listening to you though! Lol!1
I've seen a lot of hate to Macbooks and Apple products in general, and although I agree that iphone could be dramatically improved in terms of hardware I think that OSX is the best platform to do Web development.
Which one would you pick and why? Windows, OSX or Linux.28
WTF?!? so apparently I guy I know, knows the guy who built dodeley.com (don't get me started on the name!)
Oh boy... Where should I begin? So besides the fact that I'm pretty sure these newsletters will be classified as spam (aites like mailchimp and so on actually pay large mail providers not to classify them as spam, I doubt they do...), their so called "widget" is just a form, sent to their domain using GET, FUCKING GET, NOT POST, GET!!! The request looks something like "dodeley.com/?action=subscribe&id=xxx&field1=xxx&..." I mean like, WTF? Oh and their solution to not leave the page is simply to add a target="_blank" to the form, that you have to include on your site.
Did I mention, that the form id is static? Did I mention, that there's no validation on what you enter?
Who the fuck programmed this shit? Honestly!1
I know its been quite a while since ive posted last but it is safe to say that i am back! And boy do i have some stuff to bitch about.
This semester, Im taking mobile app development as a class. I chose to take this class over the introductory c# class, so that i wouldn't need to work with Windows or really do anything else to touch Windows. Well the joke is on me. Here i was thinking that we would be using a bit of Java from time to time while only really learning best practices and concepts.
Never did i think that this class's curriculum would be entirely based off of Xamarin.
Seeing as I need either this class or the two c# classes to graduate, I had to bite the bullet and just accept that my semester would be full of irritation during this class.
Its been about seven weeks in, and i have turned in 8 assignments.
All 8 of those assignments have been Windows Form Applications doing simple shit like dividing two numbers.
We have not made anything for multiple devices. We have not made anything for even one mobile device. We have not even discussed how to do this in the class.
This wouldnt bother me so much since these are typically easy programs that take about 30 minutes to make and test and submit for grading. It does insanely bother me, however, that it takes Windows so FUCKING LONG to boot, or when it freezes every 2 minutes because i clicked into another program, or it just HANGS ON THE UPDATING SCREEN AT 36% FOR THREE DAYS, or when it took 4 different reinstallations of Visual Studio 2017 before i could actually open without an error code.
College, Ive learned, tests my patience way more than it has ever tested my knowledge.2
Normal people: "It was a beautiful day today!"
Programmers: "My desktop wallpaper rotates through several beautiful days."
1. I feed my creativity addiction.
2. I solve my personal problems with automation mostly.
3. Money and food.
First day back after 2 week vacation.. It's not even lunch time here and I've already used up all the 'fuck!'s for today o.O4
I never really got what a front end or back end dev was. Or when you call yourself a developer or engineer or designer. Especially when it comes to games there are so many different job titles - wth2
(If you don't know what I'm talking about, read this: https://www.devrant.io/rants/805543 )
I have good news!
Finally, my PC is back alive :'D
I took it to where I first bought it, and...
Apparently the reason why it broke was the AC adapter, as they replaced it with a new one... (the PC was still in warranty)
So now I can finally begin to program again and (hopefully) tell you some dev-related rants! So I can actually feel an active part of this community, haha ♡4
Hi guys, I'm back!
I spent some time not using DevRant, I got a new phone and thought it would be better not to install it for some days. I had to do a lot of stuff for school these days and didn't want to geht distracted by amazing devs posting cool rants. So here I am, happy to see you all again. (Or at least your avatars)12
A friend of mine wants to start learn HTML/CSS/JS and ask me where to start.
Since I started to write them more than 10 years ago, I have no clue where to start, what good ressources are today and so on.
Therefore: what would you recommend, I recommend her?9
I've found this tutorial on getting a google free android phone (tl;dr: lineageos, fdroid&yalp, etc.)
It probably isn't news for most of us in here, however a handy beginner friendly guide to give to friends and relatives.
The downside: it's in german.13
I'm not allowed to talk about the coolest things I've done :(
NDAs always ruin the fun!
But I can tell you that they were freakin awesome. I'll come back to this in a bunch of years :)
Just know it was awesome!
var _self = Object.create(Rant);
Hello devs I'm back
A few months ago I joined a software development company and I was pretty specific that I wasn't going to do support or maintenance only feature development, well, this past 3 months I've been doing dev helping stablish good practices and a better architecture for the app, but guess who is joining a support team tomorrow, they sold me the idea of a refactor team, I was trilled and accepted, now they tell me it's a legacy bug fixing team, damn I hate this crap, hope y'all doing better5
!dev && rant
Any stargate fans on here? Can we talk like one minute about stargate origins? It's like. I mean. Fuck. Is it really that bad or am I missing a huge part?12
If I'm able to DevRant (as a verb, yes) through an entire meeting... I feel as though I shouldn't be in the meeting?1
First day back from holiday: after 30 minutes of work (excludes start-up, catch-up etc.) The P.O. (product owner) comes to me
Telling me I needed to switch project, ok I thought at least they switched the project from what ever it was to a propper OTAP street while I was away
Few tickets later the P.O. asked me if tickets x could be deployed to our test servers as well as production.. (note the ticket was already merged with our develop branch and he wanted only that single ticket x to be deployed)
WTF is the point of a OTAP street if you're going to deploy it to every server type at once?
So day one after my holiday I already needed to fight the P.O. again
At least I wasn't disturbed during my vacation... Witch is a first.8
May interest a few people on here: https://security.infoteam.ch/en/...
(note I'm not affiliated with them nor have I tested the product, so don't ask me about that, I just found the read interesting)
Not sure if I love or hate haskell... It's awesome, but then again the syntax is so fucking confusing...5
FUCK YOU NODE JS AND FUCL YOU SYNOLOGY
Decided to give an old Synology DiskStation that sits at home slme new life besides just sharing files. Since Synology has SSH but not a full Linux OS, installed DebianChroot (so far so good). At one point I needed Node JS, so installed NVM and tried to install Node. Well guess what didn't work. Tried a few more things including directly downlosding node from the official node website. Trying different versions, the whole drill.
After about 5 hours of installing and errors, well really usfull errors like "There where 2 errors during installation" WELL HOW ABOUT YOU FUCKING TELL ME WHAT THE ERROR IS YOU FUCKING FUCK!
I found a formum wkith a guy haveing similar problems. Able to install legacy 0.10.x versions but not 4.x.x. Or 6.x.x oder whatever. He found that you have to have at least an ARMv6 compatible processor, otherwise it won't run. Checked it and well, that old fuck of mine only has ARMv5. FUCK! But honestly. You detect it's an ARM architecture. You detect it's not one of the v6 or v7, you try to install the general arm version, BUT YOU DON'T GET THE FUCKING IDEA TO MENTION TO CHECK WAHAT VERSION YOU HAVE AND IF THAT IS SUPORTED BY FUCKING NODE!
One afternoon wasted, at least I got a little more wisdom. Fuck do I hate Node now. On the bright side, I've ordered a Raspberry Pi and two cases for Harddisks, I'll create my own diskstation with blackjack and hookers (I realy hope you get that reference)! Fuck you Synology and Node JS (yeah yeah, it's not Synologies fault, but I'm mad anyways!)4
After a long break for studies, I'm finally gonna continue working on my game engine. Wish me good luck.😃😃7
Been a freelancing for quite a while now and forgot what's it's like to work in a company. Have you got any tips that I could benefit from? Got an interview coming up this week and want to impress them. BTW I'm a Web developer.5
So... Aparently HTML5&CSS3 is turing complete. At least according to this: http://beza1e1.tuxen.de/articles/...
Does that mean HTML counts as a programing language now? :P7
Fucking finaly I'm back on devRant after my phone decided to die during the weekend. But why the fuck do I get a light theme again? @dfox, could you save the preferences in the profile? Or at least display the options on first start? :*2
So, I don't have any idea about copyright law. I've heard, that React is bad, as it has a `if you sue or in any way "compete" against us, we revoke your licence` clause.
So how bad is this? Is this really a thing, unless you either sue FB, or they try to buy you (which are both not very probable for small companies). Could someone who knows their shit give me a tl;dr summary (or feel free to debate)
What I've found so far: https://github.com/facebook/react/... which seams to be kind of ok.
This would be the patent: https://github.com/facebook/react/...5
The good thing about the 120+ modules with sudden changes is that I created them all and I follow the fucking standard so I just have to sed the living shit out of it, dump them all into the architecture, and re-run.
The annoying part is applying those changes to the old modules done by other people who use Word or some shit as editors. Yes, it's Python and the indentations are inconsistent. I shared my scripts to the other developer that I like because he too, follows the standards.
"Why don't you just replace the tabs with spaces?" It doesn't fucking work like that. Like I said in a rant a few months ago, the indentations are inconsistent and 4 spaces IN THESE SCRIPTS doesn't always equal to 1 tab.
"You can setup your editor so you can still use tabs and it would convert it to 4 spaces." READ. GODDAMNIT, READ. The scripts were already done, by someone else, using whatever demonic editor they were using. I can't go back in time and teach them that, I have my limitations.
"That wouldn't compile in Python at all." Get out of College. Work with different people who use different editors and different versions. Get the fuck out of your shell and your narrow-minded fuckhole. It happens, as a lot of peole have said in the previous rant.
Jesus Christ, shut the fuck up and let people rant. Stop dumping your stupid IQ levels in the comments. The only comments I would appreciate right now are the ones that actually help. If you didn't read the fucking rant in its entirety and the only experience you have is your College thesis and some hipster hackathon, shut up, hold your breath, and fucking die.
"I have years of experience in this and that, that should never happen." I don't give a fuck. It's happening right now. I can't imagine my way out of real life problems. Hand over the mushrooms.
Does DevRant count as social media? I don't think I'm allowed to post to social media while I'm at work. *Asks DevRant anyways*2
I opened my laptop every day this holiday, always with the intention of learning something, contributing somewhere, doing something. I think the closest I got was to start a VM and open my editor and read some comments (I opened and closed some files too!).
I have done nothing the holiday except bing Netflix and put another 100 or so hours on Steam. Oh and Christmas dinner sandwiches, which as I right this reminds me the oh thing was worth it just for those...
Long and short of it is I think I'm in a slump, my output over the last couple months started dwindling and I thought a couple of weeks (16 days to be more accurate) would help, but it didn't. I'm back at work tomorrow and I'm just not feeling it.
I don't think there is anyone answer but has anyone got any experience of getting out of this feeling of "being done"? I already tried watching Rocky... Just made me see Dulph Lundgren every time my screen wakes up! Wallpaper of the dude probably doesn't help...6
Question: tl;dr: looking for an open source bug tracking tool, or one that's affordable for small freelancers.
I'm working as freelancer with a client on a project and currently all the bugreporting/feature request/information/discussions/and other stuff happen by Telegram (not my first choice but hey, you know clients).
It happend twice, that I forgot about the specs of a feature we discussed briefly, because there was to much going on and I wasn't able to find it. So the next logical step would be to get a bugtracker.
So far my favorite would be http://www.redmine.org/
Does any one of you have good or bad expirience with it? Would you recommend something else, if so what and why? Other stuff I should consider?7
@dfox I saw a few posts lately, about websites that people did. So besides the collabs, I'd like to suggest a new section. "DevReviews" or what ever. The basical idea is, every one, that is signed up gets one "token" devRant ++ suporters maybee an additional free token every months or whatever.
If you wan't your website reviewed, you can post it there and people reviewing it will get such a token for their review.
To ensure a certain quality of the reviews, I'd put a minimum caracter length and a "dispute" function, where the review is taken to a community voting, if the person giving the review should get the token, or if the review should be dismissed. Additional "tokens" for additional/more reviews can be bought through the app, that could help a lot of devs get quality reviews and testing and earn you some $ for the servers.5
Have some downtime today, so since I lucked out and found some old backups (from before I used Git) of a project I was planning on revisiting, I decided to fire it up and see what I can do to get that going again.
And discovering just how much my coding style has changed since then...
[Code is in PHP, for reference]
* Virtually no documentation (whereas my current style is near-obsessive with PHPdoc blocks)
* Where comments exist, they only use // and are a full tab after the end of the line
* All assignment operators are dutifully aligned on tabs
* Have to update the entire codebase because it relies on deprecated `mysql_*` calls
* Have to flip all of the quotes throughout the codebase because I used double-quotes as my primary at the time instead of single quotes.
* Also relied on magic quotes for injecting variable content into strings
* Associative array practices varied; sometimes the names are encased in double quotes, but I just hit a block where it's all leaving it to the compiler to interpret unquoted string literals
And perhaps the most egregious so far...
* Any time we get database results back the process for cycling through them is to do `$count = mysql_num_rows($result);` (or $count2, etc.), then do a `for ($i = 0; $i < $count; $i++)` (again, or $j, $k, etc.), instead of just a simple `while ($data = $result->fetch_assoc())`2
I'm visiting st. Petersburg in russia. Any devRanters living there? Or can anyone reccomend stuff?2
I was going to show my boss DevRant. Due to my quick thinking of past and future rants pertaining to said boss, I decided not to. Quickly switching to Instagram seemed like I was in the clear, I just had to find a funny picture of... a DevRant ad... "Oh what's that app? Didn't you have that one?"
Then a client walked in!!!
Never have I been, nor will I even be, so relieved to have a client storm into the office!10
What the fuck is up with all these fucking shit-posts lately. devRant used to be fucking sick as and now it's just meme after meme and random shit everywhere. No true rants most of the time.
P.S. I'm back. Welcome to me.8
CLIENT: My wordpress site runs really slowly, can you fix it?
Me: Yeah sure, let me have a look.
*logs in and sees Facebook feeds, twitter feeds, 3 seo plugins, 5 backup generators, 4 slider plugins, jscomposer, social sharing buttons and loads more*
Me: Do you realise that you don't need that many plugins?
Client : well they make my site really fancy and my customers love it.
Windows .... You are amazing ... Managing to change my BitLocker Key without telling me, crashed you Update as always and asking for the new key you did not told anybody about to recover yourself ... Great ... Just great....
Seriously thinking about to switch back to Linux like it was before and hiding these crap in VM ...2
Does anyone know a good book for learning PHP? I want to know more about back-end development and would like some recommendations. I've been programming mostly in Java before and also have experience with SQL, HTML and CSS.
If anyone could suggest a book or any kind of advice I would really appreciate it. I've found some interesting ones online like "PHP & MySQL Web Development – by Luke Welling & Laura Thompson", but would like to hear out first people who know more about this programming language.7
What to do against chronic back-aching?
The tips on the internet ain't helpful and the doc can't go out of drunk state.10
First day back at the office...
Now I remember why I hated it so much.
The level of incompetence is astounding, people flail their arms and hope I manage to whiz up a fix, even for things that I've never touched before.
At least I have a hot cuppa and quora to relieve my stress 🤙
(let's see if I can get the doctor to write me a note because fuck this back pain)6
Err. I'm working on something this is a stupid question. But is there a way to save data and stuff without having to go into back end?
If not or if there is. What should I look into/learn to get it done without having to go too deep6
I'm back! I had to move and everything went to shit. Instead of being a proper person, I shut down. I think I'm ready for devrant again, you guys are awesome and motivate me so much.. I don't even know why I stopped being on here. Oh well.. Hello there!3
!dev random question vacation
So this is completly non dev and off topic. A friend and I will spend our vacation (2 weeks in september) in Guadeloupe (french oversea department). Both of us speake some french and we've got a rental car.
Has any one of you ever been there (or lives there) and could give us some advice on what to do/where to go?
We also plan to go scuba diving, which we'll probably do on the western side of basse-terre.7
Has any of you worked with someone claiming he's a "Senior Software Engineer" but he does not know what he's doing? I'm not saying I'm a very good developer myself but I know how to differentiate a good code from a garbage code and architecture. It's really becoming a pain in the ass...5
Howdy DevRant. Back again, took a year away from social media..
Is this place still fucked? I.e hating on Apple Products and everyone is inferior unless you use Arch + i3.6
Former android fan, I’ve been using iPhone SE for a while, and now I’m ready to give feedback. We are talking about brand new, iOS 11.2.2 device, never jailbraked (jailbroken?) or made anything fucked up to.
The main problem is battery life. It’s poor. I mean, my cheap ass Meizu m3s stands for about three times longer. Now I always need to carry power bank or charger around, keeping it up from one outlet to another.
iOS 11 is unstable and flawed. Music widget on lock screen freezes randomly, ui falls apart sometimes, apps sometimes start in landscape mode. I never found android ui falling apart, just like webpage marked up by interns.
Transferring files to Linux PC is huge pain in the ass. Nuff said.
Aaaand... that’s all. There is literally only three problems present.
On the other hand, there is huge advantages over android:
Speed. It’s unbeatable. It’s absolutely stunning. Need camera? Here it is, quarter second away. Android camera needed straight 15 seconds to start up. Taking picture? Here it is, flawless as always. Zero motion blur, gamma is ideal, focus is so sharp so you may hurt your eyes. Need 100 pictures? Here you go, just press the button and hold it. Maybe s9 or another shiny ass android takes pictures as fast as iPhone, but I bet my iPhone will be taking pictures same flawlessly after 5 years, while your android will probably become sluggish ass piece of crap.
Not. A. Single. Fucking. Lag.
Asphalt 8? 60 FPS all the way down. 2GIS? Fraction of a second away. That’s it, that’s how it have to be.
Sound quality. Just as neat as my Sansa Clip. EarPods are crap, so I’m using my SE215. Not going to ever come back to Sansa. Xperia TX had much less quality audio btw.
Apps. As long as the whole enterprise world sucking Apple’s dick, apps are running silky smooth and the things are not going to change. Come on. Apple is the king nowadays, admit it or not.
Keyboard is amazing. Screen is amazing. It’s just that pleasing. The sounds iPhone makes are great, while android sounds piss me off and making me hold myself from throwing the phone straight to the wall.
iPhone makes me feel cared about. Everything is on it’s place, everything fits perfectly. You are watching YouTube, you need to adjust volume and volume bar appears as tiny strip on the very top, just to not distract you. Make screenshot, draw something on it, share and hit delete. Every action you need is one tap away. Look up word? One tap away. Position the cursor between words? Polished as fuck, here you go, have your handy magnifying glass. Adblock in safari? Install it from the App Store and it will be literally two taps away, right at the settings. No VPN needed. Safari doesn’t become slow with Adblock, it’s just the same amazingly fast browser, but without ads. And Apple Music is just one dollar a month for students, filled with high quality songs.
Even google apps working better on iOS.
The advantages are clear for me, while downsides aren’t significant. @irene, you wanted to know what I’ll tell after a while, so I’m saying it proudly:
I’m never ever coming back to android.12
So, I work for a startup, and I'm officially a fullstack guy, but with focus on backend, thusbour front end is bootstrap. We're currently are looking for a ui/ux/frontend person. Since we're a startup it would only be a 20% position an the max amount we could afford (as we're a startup) would be 800.- CHF a month for a freelancing position.
If you're interested, or would know someone, hit me up. We do have an "entry" test/problem and simply select upon that. The website would be https://reviewed.ch9
So my first computer... My dad got a Laptop somewhere around 96-97 for work as he had to travel a lot abroad. He also used to take work home and work there in the evening or on weekends. I kindof asked if I could play with it and he just opened defragmenting and I loved the animation. At least I think it had some animation. I know another computer I got later had it. However like the second or third time he left me alone with it, I decided to find something else and somehow managed to instead of defragment the hd, format it. Or atleast delete like a few folders on it. However that game was "lame", so I went out to play with a friend, as the computer wouldn't respond after some time. I've never seen him as angry as when I got home.
Long story short, me and my brother soon got our own computer, like a really " old" one the company where my aunt worked sold. It didn't had a cd rom drive, just a 3.5 and a bigger drive. My dad later took the big tape out and replaced it with a cd rom drive. It ran win95 I think. And we later upgraded it to 982
Question & Android
Is there a way on android to limit what apps are allowed to use mobile data and what are only allowed to use wifi?11
Fuck this dieing pice of cheap chinese android crap. Sure it was anly 250 bucks, but holy hell... I could deal with the software side... Android 6 isn't the newest but eh...
But now the fucking hardware is failing too... To be more precise the buttons seam to randomly fire, which is really fucking annoying. Sometimes when both back and the other button fire the touch screen even joins the party of triggering touches in the right upper corner... Why the fuck ever.
Just ordered a pixel 3a, your days are counted fucking piece of trash!
Had to order the new one to a mailbox in germany though, as google doesn't ship them to switzerland (and the few retailers who import them charge like 130 bucks more, so paying the 5€ pickup fee will be a lot cheaper...)8
Bugreport @dfox or @trogus
On the Android app, comment a rant and remove it (modify -> delete). After that the last comment before your's will go all the way to the bottom, instead of having a "spacer" for the social buttons.
Can anyone confirm it?10
Any Symfony expert here? I've got quite a tricky question, that I'd love to disqus with another dev.
It's about twig within symfony. I'd like to add a custom node parser, but not for an own tag, but to set some value on each template if it's not set (which can't be done with globals in this case!). I've thought about using a visitor, but from my understanding it gets executed to late, as it requires (probably) to modify the twig AST at compile/parse time.7
Been off devRant for a while, just didn't find the time to check it every day, but I think I will finally find some time to join back in and have some laugh.
Missed the community so much though, so many new and old faces *cough* linuxxx *cough*.1
Does anyone have lower back pain after coding for a few hours? How did you fix it? What chair do you have? It's it a posture problem?9
Why the fuck can't I switch fuckimg tabs in the Ubuntu terminal with the fucking keybord? I use the terminal, my hands are both on the keyboard not on the fucking mouse! Fuck!
(If there is a shortcut, please let me know)7
Question about permission in `docker-compose`
So far, I've usually used vagrant for local dev. It was nice, as I was able to specify `wack:wack` as owner of all files. However with docker compose, if I connect with exec and use `/bin/bash` I'm logged in as `root`. When I then run composer, it kind of fucks with the file permissions, as after it all new files are owned by root and thus can't be edited with an ide on the "host" system.
One hack that I found suggested creating an user and a group with same uid as on the host and use that instead of root. This just doesn't sound right to me. Any advice on how to handle this situation?6
Super easy to get motivated to work on my own projects every Friday: I look back at how many and how difficult the things I worked on during the week. I take how much I got paid and divide it by the sum of (numProjects * difficulty(1 to 4)). If I spent anywhere near that number on just coffee this week, well then Friday afternoon goes towards working on my own projects (yeah Friday morning- still have a lot of work to do and coffee to drink.)1
Tomorrow I go back to work. It was one beautiful week of vacation after years without having one (since 2012) and the next one is comming up in 3 weeks. Man cannot wait. Started a small Spring Boot project with Vue.js as the front end and have been having a vlast with it (see what I did there) after considering many stacks.
Went through Python flask, ror, php lumen, php codeigniter, mean, Meteor, Sails and finally settled on Spring :) the front end was a tad harder since I am better with React and Angular but wanted to try something different. Cant wait till I continue with this.6
I have been working with a colleague on a "off the books" project to improve an internal process. We chose a two prong attack to automate the process and started work.
All well and fine so far. We ended up implementing and proposing our new approach to management. The manager liked it and urged us to continue and do an official demo this Friday.
This is where thing became annoying. We started out with a complete idea to improve and simplify everyone's lives but now I find out that my part is being "put on hold for the moment" and his part is getting the go ahead. What doesn't make sense is that the individual parts aren't an improvement one without the other so overall things will become even more complicated in my opinion.
I know for a fact that the guy talked to management and then things suddenly changed, what I can't deduce for certain is if it is an act of betrayal or a senseless management decision. As far as I know the guy, he doesn't seem the type to casually back-stab but I've had prior experiences where the same impression was horribly wrong.
What do you guys think?
(i realize that there is nowhere near enough information to make even an educated guess on your part or even on my part so i'm going to let this come down to statistics. Based on the personal experience of everyone who reads this and decides to answer, the scales will tilt either in favor of mal-intent or just a bad decision making and at least i'll start to get an idea on how to react)3
Any devs from Scotland here? A few friends and I are planing to visit Scotland. We'll hike down from Buckie to Perth and then continue on to Edinburgh.
Any advice on good pubs or sight seing stuff is appriciated (:
Cheers a Swiss dev.2
Question to the frontend devs: I'm currently trying to optimize part of our JS. How do sourcemaps influence loading/rendering Speed in the Browser?
In the `webpack.config.js` we use uglify as minimizer for js. It has the option `sourceMap` Set to `true`. Now as I understand it, this caused it to Inline a sourcemap inside the JS file (which leads to a slightly bigger file size and thus longer load time for the generated file...).
My Question: should sorcemaps be enabled for prod (minified) files? Why yes, why no? Do they help the browser parse the JS faster?12
Hi guys, I'm hoping you can help. I've looked everywhere and I've not got a clue what it is.
I lost my back door key (5-pin pin and tumbler lock) the other day, and I can't afford to get a new one right now.
I tried picking it earlier, and I discovered it's got a spring at the back of the plug (which I've never come across). I lined up all the pins but for some reason it's not opening, and I have a feeling it's either got an anti-pick pin or it's to do with that spring.
Has anyone with lock experience got a clue what could be doing this? I'm at a loss.6
Fucking MQTT, go suck some dicks! Can't get that pice of shit to work, sending connect and publish works like a charm but somehow I won't get an acknowledge message which means the publish doesn't go through!
On the brigt side: another oportunity to fire up wireshark and compare my software to other tools.
Anyone expirienced wit MQTT or thingstream.io
P.s. there support also can go and choke on some dicks!5
Back to school after 4 months of internship. Lecture about how to make loops. I guess it's better to start slowly...
Oh and I'll be forced to work with PHP which I really hate. Wish I could have python or more JS.1
Naming a value of a button, UX vs Back-End Developers:
UX Designers: "Unsubscribe"
Back-End Developer: "Click this button to unsubscribe to this service"
Asking for a friend: Well actually a friend asked me (since "I'm good with computers", you know it ;)) and no real solution came to my mind, so I thought, why not ask the internet
Anyways. She's an artist and does a project (kind of a documentation) about the Egyptian revolution. She currently lives in Europe but still has her Egypian passport. As an Egyptian national, she fears, that she could be holden back for a while and have her laptop/external HD with all the photos/videos/interviews confiscated and/or searched. She asked me for help to have a "backup solution".
The requirements: a way to backup work (from a mac) to a secure location (I would offer my server running linux for it).
The upload would have to be encrypted (if possible, I suggested to use a VPN, is this enough?)
Access to the files should only be granted if you have the propper password (in my opinion the VPN tunnel should work here too, as when it's down, you can't just reopen it without a password.
What are your thoughts on this?10
Suggestions @dfox :

Question: when modeling a language using a nondeterministic finite state machine, do I have to add a "trash" state, if a deterministic one would need one or can it just be obmited and if so why?5
# Is good to be back
Life is funny, I spend years ranting about WordPress and Mac computers, while being a full stack developer, then I got the opportunity to study music abroad, two months into the semester I get offered a scholarship to work with a Mac managing WordPress sites.
Isn't life funny?
As we're sitting like nearly all day, my sit is like dead.. I was wondering if some (tall) people have recommendation about good sit ?
I'm not living US so please, don't give me Walmart references. :p
Stupid Windows Update back at it again with the Fall Creator's Update. More like Fail Creator's Update. My poor laptop took it too hard and the built-in mobile hotspot feature is currently bugged and not working, with the ICS service in task manager stuck at 100% you usage. Restore to previous version or not to restore to previous version? That my friends is the question. *picks up Ubuntu 17.10 live disk*2
So I've backed font awesome 5 a while back at kickstarter. I've linked my github account to the repo. Now my mailbox get spamed by their issues.
Question: is there a way to deactivate mail notification for a single repo?
So far i found:
- disable all github mails (nope)
- unwatch the repo (would work, but I just want to disable the emails, as they make up 50% of my daily inbox)4
!rant but a question...
I know that with the vast examples/tutorials online this may not be necessary, but I wanted to ask the community if you guys/gals would recommend going back to school to get a formal CS education or if it would be a waste of time, money, and resources compared to just using web based sources? I've tried the college thing 3 times when I was younger but couldn't concentrate and lacked the discipline to focus and finish classes. But I'm a bit older now and wanted to know if you would recommend going back to school or if time would be better spent performing self-study and learning from home?
I'm still extremely new to coding and programming and only have basic knowledge of actual coding and a lot of the theoretical stuff in programming is completely foreign to me. Like for example, how to optimize code. I know that refactoring code to have a smaller more efficient footprint is always desirable, when it doesn't interfere with readability, but I'm unaware of where/how to modify code to run efficiently. Of course that may be wayyy to advanced for my use cases anyway 😂.
I'm trying to teach myself python as it seems like a great language for starting out and getting to understand the concepts of programing. Plus, it can be used directly in my line of work as well as side projects that I wanted to try my hand at.
Thank you in advance for your recommendations everyone!2
So I don't know if any of you know what BPA (Business Professionals of America) is (and its okay if you dont because its for highschoolers)
They hold competitions for us each year and Im going to be on my classes web dev team as the back-end python programmer. Weve already assigned everyone to their languages and were going to study so we can be prepared.
For the competition we have a few months to work on a website that actually works, front end, back end and all. There has to be forms and maybe even signup sheets that actually work.
Its really exciting and I'm definitely going to post the adventure of programming it along the way on devRant!!
If you wanna learn more about BPA go to their website, if your curious about what some kids get to experience then I'd suggest checking it out!!!
How do you restore partial data from a mysql backup? Don't worry, nothing is wrong, I'm just thinking about how would I restore something if shit hits the fan.
Our current strategy for database backups is to just run mysqldump during the night, using a cronjob (feel freue to suggest a better way ;))
1) Restoring the full db: just read that sql file into the mysql command.
2) Restoring just one (or some) tables: open the file in an IDE, just select the lines you're after, copy them to a new file, read that one (possible issues: let's say we have a table B to which entries of table A are related and we just want to restore table A. We can't nuke table B too, as also table C is refering to it, so we have to do some orphant removal in B afterwards)
3) Restoring selected entries in specific tables: setup a new db, read the full backup in there, dump these entries to a new file and read that into the real db
How do you so it? Any better aproaches/tools?8
I'll move in with my girlfriend in August. So it's time to get a cleaning robot!
To either iRobot Roomba or Neato Botvac.
Which would you suggest and why? From the readings I've done so far, when it's about performance it's Roomba 980 >= Botvac Connected > Roomba 880, but then again the Roomba 980 is a lot more expensive.
Is there a dev, as lazy as I am with hands on expirience?
Note: there will be only a small carpet below the table in the living room and the appartment will have 4 rooms: living, sleeping, kitchen and bath. As the house is a little older, there's a "obstacle" the doors between the rooms to climb of about 1cm.
Thanks for suggestions in advance. On another note: I'm planing to get connected lightbulps and speakers, so we'll be able to control most of the stuf from our smartphones. So far I don't see any advantages, incorporating a vacuum bot in there, as long as you can set a scedule, any thoughts on that?6
Currently I own a Lenovo Thinkpad which I bought in 2013. As it is aging, I'm thinking about a replacement. Where would you buy a new laptop, constraints:
- Swiss keyboard (or Option to swap it for one)
- compatible with Linux (prefered if there's a option without Windows pre instaled)
- NVMe SSD
- good battery live
- abillity to upgrade the RAM in the future
I've been looking at System76 now for a while, but since I've worked with Swiss keyboards for the last 12 years, I don't want to switch to an en_us layout...
So where do you buy your laptops?11
I sometimes accidentally press back two times when I close a rant. Can there be something like: "press two times if you wanna close"?2
I went back and looked at some code I wrote a couple years ago. It made me so sad... I well and truely did not understand a lot of core concept yet at the time, and I was stubborn and thought what I was writing was good and refused to start over or delete code.
This try block had 4 FileInputStream objects and I even have a defined branching statement which I never use.
Whoever marked this assignment probably needed a lot of alcohol.1
I have lived without any social media on my phone (except YouTube sadly) for the past 1.5 month or so. It been great tbh. But the downside is that I can’t check devRant that easily. So I haven’t touched this social media for the past month. I have decided to reinstall devRant. So I’m back!
I have started an amazing internship at the best possible company I could possible imagine, whilst I was gone. It is so cool to finally see what developing software looks like irl.
How would you call this role? Product Owner? Graphics Designer?, Both? Neither?
I work for a small startup besides university and we do need a person responsible for how site looks. But then again we also need a product owner for the frontend. So why not combine these roles? A person who's responsable as product owner for all the frontend related bits plus does the designing. Initially this person would work with just one frontend dev, possibly more over time.
- How would you call this role/job?
- What would be an appropriate salary?
- How would you evaluate an application to this role?3
GUI, you looks good, wont you back that app up
you'se a fine little API, won't you back that app up
call me 1337 devvy when you back that app up
code, who is you playin wit? back that app up
The joys of returning from my annual leave..
My contributions after just being back from a 7-day leave.. 27 in total.. PR's, issues, bug fixes, feature fixes, requested features,..
Feels good tho.. It was a productive day today and we made the weekly update! :D
( Yes, I pushed commits while on vacation :D )2
Question: what do you think of Flutter? Ever tried it? It sounds good so far, although it has limmited support (as far as I can tell)6
Well, I am finished with the front-end of a course I am doing and now ready to begin the back-end side of Web Development! Can't wait to get started!4
Dear Web developers,
I'm looking to boost my skills and improve work flow. I was wondering what sort of tools, editors or platforms would you recommend? I currently use wordpress, php, jquery, sass, react, node and laravel.
I've heard about awesome ways where you can monitor project changes, something like github but with gui for design drafts and stuff.
Also I heard about good online platform for Web development, something like online sublime text where all your files are saved within cloud platform. I'm looking for something that will unify my work throughout different work places.
Lastly, are there any good sites or new technologies that are fairly popular and good to learn or research?12
I discovered the perfect use for DevRant!! Phone meetings!!
Just make sure to mute yourself so people don't wondering why you're chuckling during an 8 am team meeting hahah!!
For a project we have to formulate political viewpoints and laws about digitalisation. It's not for a computerscience class, but for a additional class on politics. We have to formulate laws or guidlines/goals for the politicians to work towards in regards to "digitalisation" for the society/country we would like to live in.
For example stuff like "there should be net neutrality to guarantee free information and equal oportunities for all" and such stuff or "programing should be taught in school to prepare people for the economy of tomorrow" so it isn't limited to anything.
If you where a kind of king/ruler/what ever, what policy (in regard to "digitalisation") would you define and why? (Note: they doesn't have to be realistic for now. They shouldn't end in a dystopian future, but in a "better" future for all of humanity.)
What I thought of so far would be:
- Government use and promote Opensource and practice Opendata
- strong rights to privacy, you can request your data and demand it being deleted
- basic programing/IT education in school
- "reschool" program for people currently in the workforce that want to learn new things
- develope a policy on AI
- promote that Computer Science isn't just for boys but for every one
- less working hours per week due to automatisation/splitting the work among the whole population/basic income
*yes I'm lazy, thanks for doing part of my project ;)1
Does any one of you own a Omnia Turris (https://omnia.turris.cz/en/)?
In our new apartment, we'll have a 1 Gbps fibre connection (not that we would realy need it, but hey!)
However we need a Router that suports Fibre. The service provider suggested a FRITZ!Box 5490.
I thought about getting the Omnia Turris and run https://pi-hole.net as DHPC on it and maybe add a proxy for TOR or install openHAB later on.
So if you own a Omnia Turris or know someone who owns one, would you recommend it? If yes, why? If no why not? Any additional things I should consider?2
Fuck you, Julian Assange! I mean honestly! Stop being a fucking dick, that needs to polish his ego! https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/...
(On a side note, yes it's a good idea to give a disclosure deadline, but come on just give them the code so they can fix it!)1
Haven’t been on here in ages. People still moaning. Found a rant or two with some severe profanity.
A community of somewhat likeminded individuals who at some point have gone through similar experiences.
I’m back it seems.
(Not today, old friend)1
Talked the bossman, he just asked that I finish the project before being put back on my usual ERP maintainer role.
I agreed to it and the faster this fucking plugin is done, the faster I can go back to my optimization and maintenance project :D
I've been asked to write a job ad for a frontend developer, as I have never don that, what would you write in there? And what are usual salaries for frontend devs? Also what would you ask them in an interview? What kind of coding challenges would you give them? Also we're not looking for a "code monkey" only but that person should also be responsible for jow everything looks (like the design and UI/UX of the site). How would you call that position? I've for now put "Frontend UI/UX Web-Developer" there.2
Hi friends, I would like to ask someone who is more experienced in the field than me about C# and web development.
I am currently just a front end guy, with no real experience in back end - but I've been learning C# for game development with Unity for some time and wanted to ask if c# could be a nice direction for my back end learning?
Is it viable, good?
Any advice is highly appreciated ☺3
So I've wanted to do / am doing front end for what seems like a while now. My bff does back end and ask me for insight a fair amount and my insight helps or either puts him on the right track. why is it I can more easily understand back end opposed to frontend? Also its taken me far to long to learn js and yet almost completely understand SQL to which I have never written.1
Any advice on a Symfony update to 4.x? It once was a 2.x which I've updated in the past to 3.3 any pitfalls to keep in mind when upgrading to 4.x?4
My respect to front-end developers. Since I do fullstack, The con is It takes slightly longer to perfect your front or back end skills since you technically have to put 50/50 your mental energy into it. The Pro however is the appreciation/understanding you get to walk away with for both jobs.
But you really need a certain "eye" to do front end, especially when you find inspiration but you don't want to just copy their shit. Sheesh2
Traveled South East Asia for 1.5 months and now getting back to work!
What did I miss? How many new JS frameworks are there now? Did AI replaced us yet?1
Coworker was on cppcon (hope it's the name) and apparently Visual Studio debugger is gonna have "step back" ability !
Holy proper shit, I'd love to be among the engineers behind this, awesome1
If you could choose... you would prefer developing the back-end or the front-end part in an application?7
Getting a chair with a straight back and lumbar cushion makes it sooo comfortable to sit, it's amazing.
I just got a DXRacer chair and my back feels it's hugged and supported from every side possible. And doesn't hurt anymore.
Do yourself a favor and get one.1
Ctrl+X followed by Ctrl+C to quit. Let that sink in. Think about :wq. Think about Ctrl+X. Think. Ask yourself how you think about it and then think again.
And if you say "well it's AWESOME" then start using your clipboard more when using a gui around the terminal or ssh and come back 1 month later.
People say vi is counter intuitive.. what the fuck is emacs then?3
Am I the only one who hates the current status of Windows 10 where it's slow as fuck on an HDD? And I honestly don't like it's design... Even today I started messing with a Windows 7 PC and loved the OS theme and design again (though the icons may need a change). Well, back to my Elementary OS I go...1
I still don't know what back-end vs front-end is. I have a hard time understanding terms like that when it comes to programming jobs; I just like to program. Could anyone help explain these to me and give examples?8
Back-end developer (São Paulo / Brazil)
Vacant job: Back-end developer
Assignments: Work as a Back-end developer, PHP, and MySQL. Develop tools/applications for the web with a DB.
Projecting and modeling DB Knowledge. Good knowledge of usability, Cross-browser (IE7+, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari).
Desirable: Knowledge on Graphic Design and Front-end projects1
Anyone have a good suggestion on how to set up a back end service for a mobile app? I think it'll have a web management aspect and be able to send/receive data from mobile app (probably REST API, what ever that is - JK (not really)).
I have experience writing Android apps (Java), never done any back end stuff.14
How do you guys deal with RSI and back issues?
My back has been killing me this past week and hands are starting to strain with work and home PC use. I plan on restarting my exercising for my back.4
I am curious and I would like to shine some light on the typing speed of this community.
What's your wpm?
Are you front-end or back-end?
Rubber dome switch or mechanical?
Do you think this affect your typing speed?
Thanks for your answers!6
!rant, so I'm trying to decide on what caching system I should use. It's for a PHP app, using Symfony as framework, tlgether with Doctrine for DB. The caches in Question are memcached, APCu or redis.
The goal: speed shit up.
The app currently uses Symfony 2.8 and is hosted on a single server (so no distributed system is needed). I'd currently opt for APCu, but more since it's not distributed, there won't be an overhead from that. A nice thing about memcached would be the abillity to store user seeions, even if we would decide to have multiple servers in the future.
What would you reccomend and why?3
How many people can say they've read just about every rant posted? I remember when I first started I didn't have much to do and read all the way back, now I feel as though I've committed myself to this and refuse to miss any rants!
Thanks so much DevRant!!!1
Well i got my motivation back.
So i decided to make a game in unity.
It is going to be simple FTL like game. It is going to be much simpler than that mamoth of a game in 3D that i planned. I want to learn and have some fun designing the game from scrach. Yup and creating all of the assets.
If I manage to create a decent game im planning to sell it for like 5$. It might boost my funds a bit if i manage to finish it.
I have few great ideas how to develop that game. Mechanics, community support and others. Of course first i have to make a boilerplate. I cant start on those ideas if i dont have anything to work with! I hope it will be fun! Wish me luck! (And i wish everybody else luck too!)2
Any one running Symfony on a Docker container in production? I currently try to migrate our dev env to a docker compose setup (from a "monolith" vagrant vm). I'm atually not stuck at a Symfony specific thing, but on a, I guess Docker specific one(?), The issue is, I need to read and write with two users to one folder (in my case the /application/var/cache folder). Since I mount my whole code into the docker container (to use an IDE on the local files), I've got a volume (not mounted to the outside world) for that folder. (As far, as good). Now this folder is owned by root and root is also the user I get when I enter the container. When I then run a cli script, that writes to this folder, every thing works (as it's run by root) and the resulting entries in the cache dir are owned by root. Trouble starts when the php fpm process tries to write stuff in there too (as it's run by www-data).
If I add `USER www-data` (or create a new user foobar and add `USER foobar`) the container exits with status 0
So I guess the question is, is anyone running an Symfony app on Docker in Prod, if so how do you solve this? Or another question would be what is the best practice to do this? Sure on dev I could just `chmod 777` the whole folder or run the php-fpm process as root, but if that thing ever goes to prod, I wouldn't sleep very well...
i5 vs. i7?
My old laptop is dying and I've started to look for a replacement. I am used to have an i7 processor, my dev env consists of either vagrant and a VM or a docker-compose env. Plus I use JetBrains IDE. Mostly I do webdev, so not that much compiling going on, however often I need a VM with Windows to have Photoshop or Illustrator running...
So I guess the question is: Is there a notable difference between an i5 and an i7 for development?4
(Note: I got a bit carried away while writing this, so the end result is a lot longer than I expected. Apologies for the long post!)
The beginning of my programming journey started with a book.
This was back in 7th grade. I had some basic exposure to BASIC (pun maybe intended?) from our school curriculum, but it was nothing too interesting as our teachers never really treated it as anything important. They would stress a lot on those Microsoft Office chapters (yes, we actually studied Microsoft Office as part of our computer science course at school) and mostly ignore the programming chapters because I dare say many of them struggled with it themselves. So although I had been exposed to *some* programming, it was mostly memorizing the syntax without actually understanding what was going on.
Then one day there was this book fair thing going on at this local Carrefour (for those of you who've no idea, it's a pretty famous hypermarket chain) in this mall, and for some reason my mother and I were in that mall on that day. Now the interesting thing is that this usually never happens -- I usually visit malls with my dad or my friends, this is the only instance I remember where I had actually visited one with just my mom. This turned out to be fortuitous. My father is the kind of person who's generally not amenable to any kind of extraneous shopping requests. My mother, on the other hand, was and remains pliable.
Fast forward to today, and I've never looked back and wondered what it would be like to have done something else.
I got out of a meeting 20 minutes early to prep for my meeting at 2. I've been in meetings since 8am when I arrived.

I have some expirience working as full stack developer, but focussed latly mainly on backend (php/java). However for one project, I need a desktop application and I was wondering, if you would recommend electron for it.
- I could reuse some of the webapp stuff and cache it offline using web workers
- Styling done via HTML/CSS
- Portable between Linux/Windows/Mac
- I haven't worked (much) with node js so far, but that shouldn't be a too big problem
What are the pros and cons from your point of view? Would you recommend electron? Why yes, why no? If no, what would you reccomend as alternative?
My knowledge so far:
Good: PHP/Java (without GUI)/CSS
Meh: Python (I can hack things together but wouldn't say I'm good with it...), C++8
My laptop have been in warranty service for nearly a month, I have an FPGA project, a mobile app to make using ionic framework, to make a DSP compare two images and recently someone wants me to make a him a website.
And I actually have just very basic knowledge about these stuff, I've only made an desktop app once, and it just takes numbers gives back numbers.
I never wanted this, leave on my own, stop overrating my searching skills !
And all of that by the end of this semester. Fuck you people.
I'm back !
Also with a question, what tv shows do you watch 🤔, silicon valley is a given , what about Mr robot?
But I find that alot of intelligent people hate big bang theory.25
heading back to work after a month of absence (10 days sick leave, holidays and paid leave) wish me luck and grant me strength not to kill someone or myself, fellow ranters1
@dfox when deleting a post I am able to report it. I didn't want to try because I learned my lesson about bug testing in production, but thought I'd let you know and if it's fine I'll play with it :D
What's the term used to describe retracing a solution to the initial problem?, that is, walking back from final state through a series of steps to the initial state?
In chess it's called retrograde analysis but I don't remember what the general term is.10
A lot of you here rant about devs being arogant or expecting you to think for a little bit with own head and then write a proper string that will help dev answer straightforward without guessing what the author smoked or so for which there's even a tutorial made (wasn't there always). But I don't see any rants about the other side of the coin.
Let's say you are a random dude, not even that arogant type. You see a question, no answers, everyone piss on that question because it's just a mess. Yet you find yourself in a good mood, so let's help the poor soul with th trouble. Answer like from a book for kids, fully explained example and...
No points, no accepted answer, but not even any feedback! Was my answer wrong? Did I miss something? How can I improve it? Was the example too complicated?
This is exactly the type of idiot that deserves a kick in the ass. It's no site, for hanging spam! Why the hell does that kind of idiot think there's even an option for own answer? People will come back to the question eventually and what will they found? An answer, which probably isn't even correct!
(not really talking about a specific answer/question, so no need to search)
Preface: As it was unpaid labor I won't count my school-internship in a games resell shop in which I was ordered to "program" a BDSM-Shop with MS Frontpage.
My first paid gig was back in 2006. I got booked to write the website of a new company by friends of the family. The problem was that the gig had to happen ~600km away from my home town. Back in 2006 it was far from common to own a laptop for young folks, which is why I packed my Pentium 4 HT "powerhouse" tower, my 15" TFT monitor, keyboard and mouse into a suitcase and took a bus. I not only had to write the website, but had to do all the Frontend and Design as well and was paid 400€. Hahaha what a deal. They are still using my logo btw.
Anyhow... I was like 17yo and the work experience was more valuable then the money anyways. Plus at the time 400€ weren't a bad payment either. After that it took 2 more years and half a dozen of boring jobs until I started earning money with programming again. I can't understand why I haven't started programming earlier. Especially considering the wage gap between the jobs I did and potential programming jobs. Guess you're always smarter afterwards.
Don't you just hate it when a git pull request assigned to you doesn't have a descriptive title and no description at all? I think I'm having a migraine! #%!%^*#1
(Suggest Linux versions)
Had Mac OS X
Just updated to Windows 10
I guess I have to get 10 different versions of Linux now :D for symmetry
Please recommend down below, I so far like Kali!
version 10 - 10 versions2
That time when you first learn command line to remove a directory and end up deleting the entire corporate intranet.
Thankfully there were backups.
Only learned afterwards they had just started doing back ups the day before.
