(overheard parents talking)
Mum: I'm worried about our son, I guess he was hacking today
Dad: What? [Chuckle] No. He's not that grown up enough. Prolly programming.
Mum: But, the screen was all blue and there was nothing but text on it. And then suddenly it went blank. So, I asked him what he was doing and he said it was a BSOD. That sounds scary NSA level stuff.
Dad: it isn't [came out of the room, saw me there]
(And we laughed and laughed and laughed)4 -
We had recently a thread asking about our internet speeds, this seems relevant to most of what I've read in the comments so far.2

Ok, this is a rant against some devRanters.
STOP THINKING THE ANSWER TO ANY PROBLEM IS SWITCHING TO LINUX! STOP!
I am a linux user but i fucking hate people who act like dickheads to other OS users.
-A node.js problem is not a windows/linux problem
-An android studio problem is not a windows/linux problem
-A problem with website x is not a windows/linux problem
Understand the problem and give a relevant answer, don't just spit "Use Linux" everytime.40 -
My interviews to hire a Junior Dev will begin this week. Here's how its gonna go down.
Me: Star Trek or Star Wars?
My Supervisor: WTF? How is that relevant?
Human Resources: Let's see what he says.
Applicant: Battlestar Galactica
Me: Nice. I can deal with that.
Me: Tabs or spaces when indenting your code?
Supervisor: ... ?
Human Resources : ...
Applicant: Spaces.
Me: GTFO you imbecile! Next!27 -
Just wanted to show you all a completely relevant image I took at Living Computer Museum in Seattle.35

Fucking wix advertisements! Getting real tired of the "want a website? Why not make it yourself?" ads. You're already logging all my fucking google searches to display relevant ad info so maybe wrap your head around the fact that I'm a web dev and make my own fucking sites??6

I have a pi-hole setup in my network for ad and tracker blocking and am dual-booting my pc.
I recently noticed just how much data windows really is trying to gather from my machine.
So I took the pi-hole graph and you can VERY clearly see the os switch. All this useless traffic coming from windows. (This is with all the privacy relevant options inside the settings already turned off!)15 -
I interviewed a guy with quite a few years of experience, university studies from a first world country, very long CV with stuff that he did, most of it relevant to the job, and 5-6 certifications, 2 of which relevant to the job, which would qualify him as an expert (as he himself declared in the CV), of a higher qualification than mine, but less experience.
Welp, if we're gonna hire someone with a higher salary, from whom I am to learn, I better come up with an interesting, but simple to understand problem, relevant to the position, that I would solve in 30 minutes, and give him 2h (surprise factor, unpreparedness, nervousness should be considered).
40 minutes in and I understand that there is lots of doing, lots of code, but the guy has no idea what he's doing.
I simplify the problem, remove the complicated bit. Turning it into a "business case description" of an entry level problem.
...
Same shit. In 20 minutes, zero progress. At this point the solution should be exactly 4 short lines of code. He gives me 50 that produce a completely wrong result, and he has no idea why.
I simplify further. I explicitly express the problem as the entry-level problem that it is - to count the number of interactions on the website in a specific day. That's it.
10 minutes more pass. I don't know why I'm wasting my time. Maybe I just want to be polite. Maybe I want to eliminate all doubt that it's not something else.
Nope.
He couldn't even react to my explanation of why he got the wrong result, and that all he had to do is move some stuff around.
Certifications, experts, universities.
What the fuck people? Can't we be simpler, and instead be knowledgeable? The time it took him to write that list of certifications, he could've learned how to solve this problem from any introductory course.9 -

You are at a position to apply your diverse yet relevant experiences into a singular objective. This makes you strategic and holistic.

Due to popular demand (and we being unable to produce a smooth performance out of JavaFX), we decided to switch to Electron for devRantFX collab. It is now called devRantron!
Relevant collab: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/
Under the hood we are using the following techs:
- React (ReactJS, Redux, React-Router)
- Jest
- ES6 and Webpack
- MaterializeCSS
If you have knowledge about React-native or VueJS, you should be able to understand the code (eventually). If you want to contribute let me know! I will add you to our slack group :)12 -

I wanted to print the second and third page of some document, so in the relevant field of the printer dialog I enter "1, 2" and I walk off to the printer.

So the CSS code I'm working on has a terrible vertical alignment problem on every browser except IE11. Using `display: flex` =_=

One of my top 10 worst meetings, was for an interview for a job I really wanted. The guy started off the technical interview by asking me about language features that had been replaced since before I started learning the language. Told him when I started learning and his reply was:
"Yeah I see that on your CV, but come on, you MUST know this stuff".
eh no asshole, because its been removed for 4 years, you MUST know its not relevant10 -

When a mobile dev says he knows phones inside out:
"Most phones come with a built-in, disabled FM radio chip, if I needed you to build an app that enables the chip and uses it, how would you do that?"
Not relevant really, but it's always fun to stump people who act stuck-up and smart. I'd never ask this question to someone who was nervous and/or humble.10 -
University logic - Provide outdated curriculum. Drop current relevant stuff from the course. Use a legacy software that has no applications anymore. Expect the student to be a master at a technology without documentation.5

How to troubleshoot when running low on time:
- Google issue
- Open Stack Overflow link
- Scroll past question details and straight to answer.
- Pray question was relevant2 -
Don't be afraid to question senior devs as you go through your career. You'll learn a lot yourself, and any senior worth their salt will be open to the dialog. You'll learn a lot about the topic and potentially about the people you work with. Never stop learning and stay relevant with technology.1

I love how C++ is getting better and better with every new standard. How preprocessor-hacks become less and less relevant.
Now C++ 20 is finally giving us modules, and we only had to wait 26 years longer than the Fortran guys. Well done, people. Well done.

Spend 14 hours a week studying more with my free time.
Things to be studied:
-discrete math
-data structures
-algorithms
-coding challenges
-problem defining
-abstraction
-other relevant maths
Other things I want to improve:
-confidence at work
-reaching out to teams with questions
-social skills
-time management
-enjoying the little things
-patience
-consistency (with everything above)
Last big thing would be being more conscious with what type of data/platforms I am digesting everyday. Just like a good diet I want to get in the habit of consuming “good” useful content that’s thought provoking or knowable rather than fast food social media carbs

Not programming relevant.
Humans are assholes. Last week was my birthday. First my mom need to remember my sisters and grandma. Last only send a WhatsApp message for my birthday. Saturday I want to celebrate with some friends. Some didn't respond, one decline because of health issues (was ok). At least 9 people including me. But only after 2.5h (8pm) the designated driver was "tired" and take 3 more people with. So they didn't take a walk or drive by Taxi, but went fucking partying at another place...
Half of family nearly forget my birthday and a bunch of "friends" are real jerks.9 -

I wanted an Android phone with latest Oreo version, atleast 4gb RAM, 32gb or more with good processor supporting 4G dual SIM with a resolution of 1440 pixels by 2560 pixels at US$ 100.
Well got for all of it for US$125.
I went to LineageOS site, exported and filtered all supported devices with my relevant device attributes.
Got LeEco LeMax 2 for US125$ on eBay. Installed latest LineageOS 15.1 with Android 8.1.0. got 25gb free space.

I dont see why recruiters find it relevant to ask how many lines of code a piece of software has. Like seriously why!?!?!?!
It by no means measures the quality of the code or the usability or complexity of the software.6 -
Last night I was exploring the feasibility of cracking the WPA2 key of my own router at home. I set out on a late night adventure, set up a couple devices and, knowing the default password convention of the manufacturer, setup a Hashcat instance with the relevant masks on my laptop, created a Crunch wordlist and ran aircrack on my Raspberry Pi 3, and thought "Hey - maybe there's something for Android too."
Hashcat on Android is a cat based social media app. I'm a little scared.3 -
brain storming about system design on miro board
at the beginning, all devs add components they think that might be relevant for the system.
PM heavily moves everything around, deletes or changes meaning of added boxes without asking. after five minutes, he is the only one using the board, rest of the team is just watching.
PM: come on, guys. don't just sit and watch, you can also participate.
besides that, the resulting system in the end was complete garbage.7 -
"I want visibility in the sprint", "Information for everyone! When you do even a small refactoring, you should add a card to the sprint, clear?"
Those were the words of the product manager.
That sounds reasonable but when there is a bug to investigate, he just pops to the chat channel throw a request with a bit of information and asks to check/fix that.
So to keep my sanity, I asked him to create a ticket with relevant information and additional observations so we can have visibility as he was advocating for it ;)
It felt just good to see him going silent :D3 -
I am always shocked how many people at work are not able to use Google efficently. No matter if experienced developers or graduates. They are not able to limit search results to a certain period of time, search in certain pages, for certain file types and so on. EVERY FUCKING search result gets clicked, although you can already see in the preview that it's absolute crap and not relevant at all. I could cry sometimes and the worst part is, that many of them don't want any help or suggestions.10

TLDR why do I need to be like a competitive coder just to get a good job?
Why does being very good at technical interview questions beat having a portfolio of actual apps built using technology, tools, and skills that are much more relevant to the needs of doing the actual jobs?16 -
First day at new job. It's literally meeting hell.
1 hour meeting followed by 1.5 hours meeting followed by lunch followed by 2.5 hours meeting.
Couldn't get anything done. About 15 minutes out of all those meetings combined was actually relevant to me.7 -
So, I'm trying to process the feelings from not getting accepted for the PhD project I applied for a while back. And it's just unfair. They've recruited people with no publication and less GPA than me. I also doubt any of them would be field-wise more relevant than me tbh. (Wouldn't be surprised if they hired MBA grads) I have all the relevant qualifications that even people working on that project do not have. I could easily get this project going beyond what they are doing with it rn. It's unfair. But it's life. And life goes on.
Am I angry? Yes. Am I disappointed, also yes. They didn't give me any alternative offers either. So I am going to steal the project and finish it so they have to throw all the money they've invested in the toilet.
... If only I wasn't depressed and could bring myself to apply elsewhere again. 🙄10 -

Boss: Can you export the foo data and send it to me?
Me: Sure
Me (later): Ok, just shared foo.csv with you. It should have everything you need, just let me know if you need the bar data.
Boss: OK, thanks.
Today
Boss: Did you get the foo data exported?
Me: Yes, I shared that with you yesterday
Boss: What did you name it?
This is all in a chat, by the way, not in person. Scrolling for 1.5 seconds reveals all the relevant information.
How do I respond in a way that is not sarcastic and does not belittle my boss? I'm not sure it's even possible.2 -
Most of the work we do is committed into various branches. Everything is merged into the master branch.
Colleague was on vacation. I was working on a bug that was fixed by him some time ago. All I had to do was find the commit and merge it into the relevant branch. I didn't know which branch to search so I just looked into master. Search all commits on master made by colleague.
All I see is:
"Merged into master"
"Merged into master"
...
"Merged into master"

My problem with a lot of free resources/class assignments is we're being forced to make useless shit. For instance, an interactive textbook we use has some stupid fucking turtle assignments.
Why not make it something relevant? One of the first things i ever made was a Fahrenheit to Celcius converter. That's a real world application, since not many can calculate that math in their head.3 -
When you're judged by the number of lines you wrote/commits you pushed/any other non relevant stat rather than your code quality1

Honestly? I was always good at maths and creativity. And so, programming was natural to me. I was always good at it with minimum effort. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
... Algorithms were a whole other story tho. I'm still not confident 'bout any algos I program from scratch. But hey, if it works, it works. (that became my motto about algos, kinda)
Forgot one thing tho: looking at relevant code to whatever I'm doing, be it in a tutorial or stackoverflow. I don't need the text or tutorial or explanation, I need to see code examples.2 -

Had an interesting application for a web / fs position the other day. Some guy in his 40s sent a CV, along with a bunch of 5+ years old reference letters (recommending him for things like PHP 5.3 and ExtJs 4). A bit outdated but okay.
And then, he put in a list of NPM packages he used. Not just relevant frameworks like Angular & React, or tools like Webpack and Babel. No. A list. Of. NPM. Packages. There were things like UUID there, which is literary a single function!2 -

HOLY CRAP STACKOVERFLOW! I get that you're trying to make it easier for people to get their questions answered by structuring question-asking into a multi-form wizard with guides and problem-checking along the way. But when you block my question from being submitted AT ALL after I've done _absolutely everything_ you've asked and then you tell me that my question isn't valid simply because someone HAPPENED to mention in THEIR question A SINGLE KEYWORD I've included in my question? Like the word "What" or "How" or "img srcset" even though I've ALREADY READ THOSE AND THEY DON'T ANSWER MY QUESTION? That seems to be a bit of a jerk move, doncha think?
(Yes, I know the question showing in the screenshot isn't relevant to my question. I was just being a smart aleck at this point because NONE of the relevant questions I tried would unblock me.)
I guess all questions ever asked or that will ever be asked are already answered on StackOverflow.6 -
Hey Google, please stop ignoring 3 out of 5 words in my search queries ever so often. I have been getting tired of the unhelpful note "missing: " followed by the most relevant parts of my question.

Fucking search bars. It seems like no one is interested in making search on their website actually work. It always gives me some random shit all while missing relevant results I can find myself by scrolling through menus. It’ll miss stuff even while searching the exact subtext. Every. Single. Time.
If it’s not an open source library’s docs with Algolia, you can forget about their search bar.6 -
With 4 years of b.tech about to finish, i feel fucked up. Our studies were useless and other than java basics, i know nothing.

First and foremost introduce concepts like version control from the beginning. As for the rest, the motivated students will teach themselves the relevant things and the others will fail/drop out. That seems to take place now.
My biggest complaint with the education system is more general and not CS specific. Remove all of the gen ed requirements. REMOVE ALL THE GEN ED REQUIREMENTS. They don't make you "more well-rounded" they just set you back 2 extra years and throw you into twice as much debt as necessary. We spend 13 years learning the foundational things just to spend 2 years in college paying out the nose to go through it again.
Fix that and add a few relevant ideas into CS degrees and I think the education system is decent. There will always be bad teachers, but software developers need to be able to pick things up themselves so it's just preparation for when they get a job and have a useless senior dev to work for. -
How the fuck does TypeScript still not have service worker support? Seriously, it's just a typings file. People have written that typings file. They would just have to include it in the lib collection shipped with the compiler. Yeah, it would have DOM calls intermixed with the SW api, but frankly, having the typings for a set of calls you can't use is infinitely better than missing them for a set of calls you can.
The relevant issue is 5 years old btw.7 -
I really think 1 hr+ meetings are a fucking waste of time. By minute 40, people's attentions waver.
If I ever run my own shop I will fucking ban meetings that last more than 30 minutes, and have a hard cap of 7 people per meeting and require a fucking agenda. God damn it. Being stuck in meetings where 90% of crap not relevant to me is bs.

Ugh. I hate gmail threads. Especially when people just hit reply and quote the whole thread in their next email.
Going back and sifting through these threads to find relevant information is always a pain in the ass.
I like the new gmail UI. It's clean and works perfectly especially when you have keyboard shortcuts on.
But these threaded messages. Gah!1 -
I fucking HATE people at stackoverflow that "edit" every single character or spacing issue they see that are not relevant. FUCKING STOP. why do you have to fucking touch it? for imaginary Internet points? WTF8

I think tech recruiters will be among the first to have their job taken over by AI. Even I can write an "AI" that goes through LinkedIn profiles, doesn't read them at all, and sends their owners a job posting chancing it might be relevant.
Probably the only reason it hasn't happened already is LinkedIn's TOS.
...Cheaper and at least as effective as the real thing.1 -
So why the fuck did you go into code that I've written, change the name from "mode" to "type" throughout the >1500 lines of code that's relevant to the feature, and then move on to change my implementation to something that is arguably not common practice for the language and framework we're using, and in turn create duplicate state? And why the fuck weren't these changes in separate clear commits, but instead scattered over multiple commits? You're supposed to be senior!3

I really don't get why people get offended by things like the little Santa's hat at the setting options in VSCode, I mean this kind of thing should be not relevant in this type of context, they just try to give a little reminder about the current holidays.
Anyway all believes are respectful, but at this rate, everything we do will be offensive.

Long long time ago when recharge coupons we a thing, I used to try out more codes in the series and waste my time. After failing a lot over this, I started trying out different USSD codes to see what other stuff is out there. This got me to stumble upon facebook and twitter on USSD. I'm not sure now but, twitter was probably *515# from my carrier.
Facebook. I remember chatting for quite a long period using this. Very slow and limited yet, fun. The USSD message expires within ~60secs. so you have to type the chat message before that or you lose everything you typed. The phone was no smartphone that would allow me to copy the text from the USSD input. On top of that panic, was a character limit to these messages. I remember hitting send while being midway through a message just so I don't lose what I typed, on a T-9 keyboard. Still miss those!
The person on the other side would receive a half message due to this, and would start replying without any patience, to which I panicked as now there's a new thing to respond to, and a half message which I'm waiting to complete.
Later over the weekend when I was allowed to visit the cyber cafe for an hour or two with 15-30 INR, reading the chat threads, being able to use the five sticker packs:) and thus continuing on a computer was fun. But, as the time at the cafe expires, I had to immediately shut off my session or I'd be charged more. Thus, I was left in the middle of a conversation again, and had to continue over USSD.
Using social media without any internet like this was quite fun in a weird way. If I get a new message, I'd get a USSD alert, and then an sms if I didn't reply in some 10-15mins!
This had all the features like like and comment. Friend requests too. For the posts in a "timeline" which was new and fancy in those days, all you see is the caption of a post which also gets truncated quite a bit as USSD also has to show it's options like:
1. Like
2. Comment
3. Next Post
4. Main Menu
This was around '13 or '14 I guess. After which I later got my first computer- a laptop. Anyways, the tactile feel of pressing the buttons on a T-9 keypad is nostalgic to me. 😅 And if you were a pro at texting, u must hv used shrtcts lyk dis too w/ emojis lyk :-) <3 -
Stuff is so rapidly depricated in javascript that you always have to add current year in Google searches to find something relevant.
"Dammit, this answer is from 2016, probly no good today". -
I'm surprised a lot of people still don't realize that passphrases are way better than an 8 character gibberish word.
I've even tried convincing a friend and he thought I was lying.

Been watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy since yesterday for the third time in my life. I shed a tear at the end. That movie is as good today as it was 15 years ago. Awesome.
Now, to make this post relevant, im going to close VLC media player, open Android Studio and go on a Kotlin (which is becoming more and more like Gandalf the White) journey2 -
TFW you google an error and all you get are GitHub issues with rambling conversation and no resolution. Marginally better than having no relevant responses IMHO.1

For context, I'm a web dev student. One of my modules is UX.
These are my exam questions.
Now, please tell me HOW THE FLYING FUCK this is relevant to WEB DEVELOPMENT?
Seriously, I get studying UI, but uncanny valley; really??
Fuckin' hate being a student. Give me a job.8 -
Did you all apply for a job directly right after the end of college or did you do an apprenticeship first and then really started working for a company?
On a side note: Are apprenticeships even common and relevant anymore? Or are apprenticeships only a thing in Germany?13 -
None in the last few years. But my supervisor was a gem that I wished I could pack in a bag and take with me elsewhere.
However, I can recall an old job that had a lot of "weekly" meetings that I used to sleep at. If you have a weekly meeting without an agreed upon or relevant agenda, chances are it's a snooze fest.3 -
its not imposter syndrome
i've got over 6 years in industry and i still hardly have a fucking clue what im doing or a proper foundation
not like school covered much if anything relevant to industry anyway

Had a better day with i3wm and Linux. Did a lot of futzing with config files and got it looking pretty cool. My status bar is relevant, urxvt is transparent, I'm happy with it.
I would have taken a screenshot to share with you all but uhh... I don't know how yet. :/6 -
Which is worse?
- Staying at a company you helped build because you have an emotional attachment to it, even if it's not as good to work for now, people are leaving every week and pay is under market rate.
- Leaving a company you helped build purely for more money and a big name on your CV.
Follow the money or follow your heart?
(Image slightly relevant?)10 -
I still do exist, long time no see, fellow Devs! How is it going?
Didn't posted here in long time. Anything new relevant? I just started studying at an university. Hoping to post again here.14 -
I had a phone interview with a small startup for a Web Development role. I was fairly confident that I would pull through most of the technical questions that would come my way.
They instead asked me a stupid optimization problem involving some buckets, pigs and poison. I answered it, told them to fuck off and ask me something relevant.
Except that I didn't. I fumbled to find a half decent answer to it and they were unimpressed. The worst part was that I could think of a dozen better answers after the call was over.
Doesn't seem particularly fair for people to judge you by such abstract questions rather than evaluating skills directly relevant to your job.2 -
ok, so first there were ads.
Then came adblock and the likes.
Then websites started implementing randomly generated strings.
Then came pi-hole.
Now some of the websites are using RNG + hosting ads on their domains...
(the order might not be very accurate, but you get my point)
So what now ?
I'm guessing that the next step for adblock will be to use AI to recognize these RNG strings, and then the websites will use AI to generate better strings (harder to distinguish if it is relevant content or an ad).
In other words - AI vs AI :D
what do you guys think ? :)4 -
I swear to god this industry needs some serious purging. I was trying to google the parameter to Node that crashes on unhandled promise rejections so that I can get a stack trace and debug it properly, and literally all relevant SO questions were asking how to _prevent node from crashing on unhandled promise rejections_. In what realm is that preferred behavior?7

Know what really grinds my gears? The fact that at many companies, PM's and QA people aren't required or expected to have even a basic level of knowledge, making communication pretty unpleasant. Even having a grasp of relevant vocabulary would make things so much easier.
Combine this with the bedside manner of a barn-raised sociopath, an ignorance of human and technical capabilities in general, and we have several good reasons to stay at home "sick". What the hell do I keep getting myself into?2 -
It's disgusting how a package like compress-commons can have 1.3 million weekly downloads yet no documentation whatsoever and not even any relevant comments in the code. Honestly fuck the javascript ecosystem3

Co-worker told me my code isn't up to" standard" and I don't follow "relevant convention" because I don't use a space after declaring a class/function AND inside the parentheses:

How do you do this personally?9 -
It honestly fucking seems like I am the only one that never could get google keyboard to have better auto-correct and also automatically add words I constantly fix after it corrects them - to some sort of dictionary, even with all relevant settings activated.
It's really frustrating when people praise it's auto-correct and learning functions, when I just can't get it to work on any of my devices.6 -

To all the hardcore Vim users:
Why do you prefer Vim over IDEs ?
Are you faster/more efficient using Vim ?
What are it's main benefits/drawbacks in your view ?
I'm familiar with it, but nothing more than that. Usually use it just for quick and dirty edits, but that's all.
I'm seriously considering making the change to Vim and I can't explain why. Read an article once why Vim is still relevant and some features as to why that is, but I'd like to get more opinions on it.22 -
Just been handed a specification with the word 'relevant' in it 13 times without relevant ever being defined.
Specific is literally in the word specification4 -
'Google knows everything about you.'
'Facebook records conversations.'
'Personalized ads manipulate you.'
Guess that's why YouTube showed me an ad in Spanish yesterday. Or why I never clicked on an ad. Or why only every 1 in approx. 10 ads is somewhat relevant to me (and thats with me explicitly stating my interests in ad personalization options).
I don't have anything against shielding your privacy. It's your right not to use a product if you don't want to, but I don't see how people can make these statements without providing solid proof.
Just my opinion.5 -

Why in 2017 it's still so important for companies that their candidates have a motherfucking CS degree?
Most people I know with a CS degree are less skilled and knowledgable as I am in technology, and they tell me that all you learn in CS degree is a lot of irrelavant math and a lot of theory, with some rare places actually teaching you relevant courses.
What's more prefarable to a company, someone with a diverse tech experience or someone with a CS degree?13 -

Recent rant about hipster styled mobile-first websites which actually look awful on a desktop PC reminded me of this. How is this a good UX if I have to zoom out your page every single time? C'mon, I am not blind ffs!
You want some relevant info? How about a video that takes 90% of your screen instead?6 -
I specified a requirement where certain bits in a certain message shall be evaluated for certain items. The tester came up to me and talked some BS about how to guesstimate these bits by totally different bits. I said, look up the interface definition, the bits are there. Got an email, same BS. Tester was just too lazy to look it up. So I answered that message ID X has bits 60-63 for the four relevant items.
However, I carefully avoided telling him which bit was for which item so that he knew what it was, but I still forced him to look up the inter fucking face definition. -
Trying to make use of Google Maps. Search results are always sorted by "most relevant" by default, instead of by distance. Always I switch to distance, next search goes "most relevant" instead, which should be labelled "most irrelevant" instead, as it seems to be an excuse to show a list with promoted businesses not only far away, but often unrelated to my actual query. Wasn't Google supposed to be some sort of search engine experts? or at least the lesser evil of search engines? Oh wait, no, they're actually an advertising company, and it shows. Fuck you, Google. Where am I going to throw my Pixel phone and why did I open your shitty apps in the first place? I should switch MY own defaults back to Open Street Map etc.5

So AMD is introducing new CPUs with NPUs, aka Ryzen AI, for inferencing, but only for some of the lineup, making Ryzen AI even less relevant.
Not to mention that AMD comes up with new HW that nobody knows how to use, that no SW exists for, and...
Oh, wait. Making AI capable HW while completely failing on the SW side. Now it makes sense. It's just AMD being AMD.4 -
Working for one of our oldest customer, in some serious old, ugly and outdated code(web service).
The dev db doesn't contain any relevant data.
The QA service points to production, so can't use it for any tests.

Their pm is going on vacation next Friday.
No time for refactoring, db data updates or otherwise do important and much needed updates.
They want it to be done yesterday.

Whose fucking idea was it to still consider assembly (with C being optional) as the most relevant language in electrical engineering school?
Also teaching like 74HC and Op-Amp IC's are still the most common thing in todays electronis is really grinding my gears!!! Is it still an argument that your 8 NAND gates are essentially the same price as a low cost Microcontroller?
But one can be modified within second and the other you potentially need to redesign the entire board.12 -

I was trying out flutter because why the fuck not. I made a plan for an application the downloads an Osu!-beatmap file and extracts the infos relevant for an external music player (like background, the song file, title and so on)
So I designed a basic database scheme and decided to include the files into the database. 3 hours into development it hit me...
HOW THE FUCK IS THE EXTERNAL MUSIC PLAYER SUPPOSED TO GET THE AUDIO FILES WHEN THEY ARE IN MY DATABASE!
Guess I'll just have to replace the files with absolute paths instead. 😒 -
Python async is a total, unapologetic shitshow. It’s as if the design goal was explicitly to invalidate the maximum number of thoughtful stackoverflow QAs possible. Pro tip: make you sure to memorize the release dates of every minor version of python from 3.5-3.10, so that you know which stackoverflow answers are not relevant in any way to your codebase.2

This is why code reviews are important.
Instead of loading a relevant dataset from the database once, the developer was querying the database for every field, every time the method interacted with it.
What should have been one call for 200k records ended up as 50+ calls for 200k records for every one of 300+ users.
The whole production application server was locked.2 -
"hey, you know that help site that our main app users rely on to know wtf is going on?"
"yeah...?"
"let's change the URL without pre-planning or advance warning for any relevant teams, and just tell them afterwards!"

seems like information here is on a need to know basis, if you need to know then you definitely aren't getting it1 -
Hey, if your repo shows up as a popular search result, and there hasn’t been an update to it in 7 years, AND it has more than 200 open issues, AND it’s a buggy piece of shit… DELETE THAT SHIT ASSHOLE. It’s a disservice to let people use your fucking stupid abomination that was relevant years ago. Swallow your pride and remove it from the internet.7

Couldn't be arsed with all the conditional compilation that angelscript required, so I dumped right back to good ol' lua for now.
Got lua in, vm started, loading strings and pushing/popping the stack.
Got SDL actually drawing as intended.
I don't know even half of what I'm doing.
Apparently header files that end in ".hpp" are specific to c++, while .h are for c headers.
I like the new SDL2 though, little bit different than SDL1. Not a lot of tutorials cover the difference, but I could kinda suss out from the documentation where I needed to adapt, even though I'm still pretty loose on the library, on the docs, and on c++ itself.
Still just a learning project.
Also, I'm continually surprised there isn't a portable, platform independent tool or little language just for replacing all pseudo-languages out there like .bat and .sh, and .zsh
Maybe even just a tool that standardizes it all, then takes config files that map the new standard to system dependant commands, so you can download the damn thing, configure the relevant environment variables, drop in the platform dependent configuration (or your browser or package tool detects what platform you are on and chooses the relevant package/download for your platform), write a console script and the tool automatically translates, and emits the system-relevant commands to that platform's console (so you don't even need much platform-specific code to do things like file access). -
Write 5 pages full of relevant information for a 15 mark question in the Human computer interaction exam but the teacher chooses to give me 2 marks , why? Because I didn't write everything that was given in the words exactly ( I had written it in my own words) . Is the search function useless?
I tried it in the official devRant app because I consider adding it to JoyRant.
But it never finds anything relevant for me.
Even if I give it an exact substring of a comment, it doesn’t find it.
It also doesn’t find users (which would be useful)
Does it only work for the text in a rant?
Do you find it useful?6 -

Not really documentation, but actually the user manual for a corporate online ebanking system for dealing with EPF/ETF. Get a bachelors degree or higher from a decent uni or college. It's gives you a solid foundation teaching you stuff that you wouldn't otherwise spend time on because frankly it's shit boring. Like compiler technology and low-level programming languages. I believe this broader understanding which eventually allows you to become a better developer and architect.
Yes, the first year at a real job will teach you a ton more relevant stuff than 3 years at uni. But that's just not what it's about. Ignorant people just think it is.5 -

Wait.. where was the error.. ah, there, that one relevant piece of text. I only had to visually scan 199 others..
Yeah, I know, I can configure them to only display a certain category (info, dev, etc) but it's annoying when that's not the case.4 -

Half of the courses we had in our college were about electronics. Except Microprocessors and Transistors, it's not relevant.
We even had chemistry and engineering drawing. So we essentially wasted more than half of our time.
Besides languages, weren't taught anything about real world software development.
Nothing about how to work with an existing code base, version control, design patterns, system design, creating a website, debugging, functional programming, scalability, reliability.

Relevant today. Remind me why I like this job? One month to do years worth of work while taking meetings and other projects.

That’s more on less everything related with dev / computer stuff. -
An App/service which would help doctors and patients to schedule consultation hours. Also an patient would always have medical relevant documents as digital documents. The ones ive seen in hospitals and doctors offices looks horrific..1

My client told me that she was not happy with her website because there were unnecessary boxes on one of the pages.
Me: Unnecessary boxes?
Her: Yes, at the bottom of the contract page.
Me: boxes... Boxes... Wait, did you mean the footer?
Her: Yes. They are not relevant. Please remove them. -
I was just thinking that if i need to setup a log server i'd need to name it properly so this was my conversation with myself:
me: i should name the log server something relevant
inner me: call it log_cabin
me: that's not relevat
inner me: CALL IT LOG_CABIN -
I’m just curious, how relevant is slack in the workplace? And is it enjoyable to use or awful like Skype9

Does anyone know a relevant alternative to Atlassian's JIRA? Damn their pricing is like 10$ for 10 people and 250$ for 25 people. WTF12

Like a lot of school kids in the UK, I learned BASIC on a BBC Model B and later BASIC/COMAL on my Archimedes A3000.
It taught almost nothing relevant to real programming. A terrible and inefficient way to learn! But there were no better resources then. No Internet access. -

Google Ads isn't even using up half of my daily budget lmao1 -
Was excited my company was pushing for talent profile updates. Filled all my computer programming skills in, then language skills, I thought it was fantastic. Go to the email and it states update job skills relevant to job held. Pretty sure that means I just wasted my time. =\
-
At work we only "develop" for Microsoft Sharepoint which consist for the most part writing small javascript based project that on their own are not exciting at all. Problem is that by doing 90% work like this i feel like i am wasting my time by not learning/working on more relevant things for a .net developer, but i have a contract for 2 more years. Except to study and do things i like at home i don't know what much to do.

Implemented a feature against a "restful" json api. The feature works, test-driven development ftw.
Yet on the run with the live api: certain important fields all only contain the value `0`.
Confused I asked around what's going on, expected a bug in the api. Now I've been told that those fields never worked and the relevant information has to be gathered by either querying against a (deprecated!) mysql database. Or use a different endpoint increasing the http request overhead by factor over 1000.
We call it team work. -
I've seen a lot a of rate regards WordPress. I understand that if the client doesn't need a CMS WordPress is not relevant, but is there any overall better CMS then?13

The ocr a level in the UK is properly messed up - it's beyond outdated and irrelevant, with very little programming involved. The GCSE is even worse - this year they literally removed all programming (coursework) - like how is that supposed to teach you anything relevant? The GCSE from the year before was much more relevant, though still not perfect, as it had much more of a focus on programming and development. But hey, what can you do? The education system will do what it wants. All we need is to get people from the industry to create exams and the syllabus, to help ensure they are more relevant. I ranted on a bit but hey, hopefully we can change it for the future generations, as I find there are very few kids interested in programming these days. Here's to change
-
That feeling when you go back to a project you haven’t touched in months, upgrade one of the dependencies to a new major version (come on how many breaking changes will actually affect this tiny project), and find nothing is compiling because the library maintainers renamed everything and introduced a lot of breaking changes that are actually relevant2

Gotta love recruiters who add you on LinkedIn with a great opportunity to work for a lot less and a lot harder than your current job on a position not even relevant to your work.

Just got a bottle of baileys as a gift for acing my "end of high school" exams. I never had my own bottle before. How do you store these things? It has milk in it so I might want to put it in the fridge, but only if otherwise it's good for less than a week, because everyone else in the family also loves it so in the fridge it'll be empty within a week.7 -
As a part of the university, I have to get an internship for 20 weeks. I wondered if anyone had an idea for a type of company (not a specific one) that would be fun to try out?
I’m studying as a software engineer. I have a lot of experience programming, so I figured I’d like to try out a different kind of company, I don’t know what type though. I want to enhance my experiences as an engineer. That is not necessarily as a programmer (though it could be by programming), but I want to probably work among multiple kinds of engineers or something.
I don’t know, I just figured that some here had an idea to something that isn’t the most obvious choice.
The country isn’t relevant since I don’t ask for a specific company, but it might be relevant to mention that I live in Europe.5 -
I started to learn php that was one big mistake
Php- here is a random non relevant error to keep you busy
Me-Please die please1 -
I don't. I could've been a writer or a physicist for all I know. But when we started programming in high school I realised that I like doing it and I'm a quick learner with an affinity to maths so it felt relevant.

> Colleagues complain all the time about dumb shit which have no relevance whatsoever to the job (see my "cat in voice call" post): I get scolded, I need to change
> I complain for the first time in 2 years about relevant stuff which actually matters to the job (some guy collecting bad decisions one after the other): I get scolded, I shouldn't trash talk colleagues
The key lesson I'm learning here is how everyone is allowed to do everything towards everyone, everytime, but by God don't you dare doing it about what should be relevant about your fucking job. We don't do that here.1 -
I never had a fight. And I mean never at all, not just dev-related.
I'm not sure that this is a good thing.
Sometimes I wonder, does this mean that I'm a good diplomat, or that I'm not relevant enough to argue with?1 -
Dammit, why can't the Android SDK use enums!? Figuring out which int constant in which class/interface is relevant to which parameter can be a major PITA...

I wonder if crypto exchanges are so damn vulnerable or just so transparent.
I mean, it is impossible to scroll tech articles for more than a few seconds before stumbling on a report of yet another crypto exchange being nicked a couple hundred mil USD.
- It could be that their security severely sucks (wouldn't blame them for it, most businesses do suck at securing shit).
- It could be that the entire black hat community is putting it's might on stealing money that is so fucking easy to launder.
- It could be that is damn nigh impossible to cover up a crypto hack since the evidence of coins drifting away is forever on display in the public ledger, and in that case crypto companies are not hacked more often than regular companies, they are just much more often publically shamed for it.
- It could be a mix of all the above, but my intuition is that one factor is more relevant.
Which would be the most relevant factor? One of the above or yet another attack vector to the stupidest value conduit ever?5 -
"Can you do the job without this colleague?"
"No! It is system-relevant."
"why?!"
"cause, he is cooking coffee..."1 -
so here i am, recreating the same code.
i'm using an acceptable solution for running this on a linux system.
they updated it so blkid won't display information without root now, a dozen times. ok. fine. i get it blkid can also SET the id.
so.
lsblk -fJ
nice command, gets me the info I want.
implementing, recognizing the implementation.

This begs the question: how do you define being good at programming? How can you tell if you are actually good or just think you are?
Having asked that, I think I’m getting there... by reading other people’s code, by listening to feedback from better devs than I am, by asking questions and discussing matters I may not fully comprehend, by reading books and articles, by trial and error and by constantly seeking new concepts, languages and other relevant matters to learn. That’s how one becomes better - when one is good, is another story altogether. -
What does everyone use to sync/upload/download files to servers? (For files not relevant/necessary to git)
I've used sftp drive, ssh, filezilla but the best solution for me so far has been using torrent syncing (I.e SyncThing). Any other good contenders/suggestions?8 -
I just don't get why nobody ever even talks about ShellScript any longer! While it is still extremely relevant unlike Ruby... Whaaat?2

Recruiter message: Do you want to get an extra 50£ for Christmas? Get me in contact with one of your friends fitting this job description...

It would be really nice if bower packages had a consistent naming convention as far as getting to the relevant file path. I'm always surprised how whacky it is. bower_component/special_plugin/code/dist/SpecialPlugin/Script.js ... nonsense!

I realise this might not be the place but does anyone know of a simple diagram JS library I can use where I can just simply drop the relevant files in a html/php file on an apache server and not have to install <package manager>, set up a <js server software> and be forced into pulling a million dependancies because the devs couldn't do something as simple as pad a string?
My Google-fu is weak today.7 -
In comes the new developer messing the repository with unreadable two space indentation in our backend codebase. I can understand it being useful to keep code within the horizontal editor "viewport" for stuff like JSX, but otherwise it's really fucking ugly and feels like the code is not indented at all
We're not using any tools for automatically standardizing code style yet, what do you recommend? If it's at all relevant, our codebase is in TypeScript.6 -
Anyone here have experience with bountysource or doing code bounties to make a little extra? Bountysource seems interesting but the annoying thing is that you don’t know which ones are still active, and plus some seem to be more trouble than what they’re worth. Learning their codebase (at least the relevant stuff) and implementing a fix for 50 bucks? No way in hell

Came to college to finally study the subject I love, to code in peace. After finally getting through the rigorous admission process in which you study stuff that isn't actually relevant to the stream you'll be choosing in college. And all of this for what to join in the vain pursuit of getting a good CGPA. All of this is literally sucking the time out of my life. Fml

When you add a new file to a project, Visual Studio shows only the types that it thinks are relevant.
It's based on a guid in the .csproj file. Yes, a guid.
A magic number, only longer.
Changed to another one that allows me to add the files, added the files, restored previous number. Project unloadable, restored with git, lost several hours of work. If only I committed before trying this. Lesson learned. Trust git. Never trust Visual Studio.3 -
Watching Invincible with my son:

Can someone explain the future of PHP? (Serious question). I was under the impression learning php is mainly for the current job market. Otherwise the future is nodeJS, ruby, python etc.
I’m asking because I see a lot of leading development and courses on laravel for modern development and I’m wondering how relevant it is to the future.1 -
as my first rant here I thought i'd start with one of my favorite relevant quotes:
"If only it weren't for the people, the goddamned people, always getting tangled up in the machinery. If it weren't for them, earth would be an engineer's paradise."
-Kurt Vonnegut, "Player Piano"1 -
Gotta be honest, I'm getting real sick of seeing "View my verified achievement" posts on LinkedIn. I have gotten a few certifications, but I have never posted them on LinkedIn because its irrelevant for 98% of my peers. How about simply telling your relevant peers of your so called achievement. Your manager would probably interested in knowing, but most of your 500 followers sure ain't. You can still put your certification on your LinkedIn profile for the recruiters to glob over while doing the rest a favor.2

Starting my internship super late (mid-June), so I randomly decided to learn a bunch of stuff relevant to it all of tonight... I thought my all-night self-teaching sessions ended in high school.

I have previously posted something which is similar to this post; however, the amount of relevant information which is provided within this post will hopefully exceed the amount of relevant information which was provided in the mentioned post.
If my skill set, which is visible at http://gyazo.com/d27a11ec203579178c..., interests you, then I request that you contact me at varikvalefor@aol.com, for I am searching for a new correspondent.
Because some individuals have misinterpreted the previous text, I state that I shall continue to hold the position which I have held for the past sixteen-something years; I am merely searching for a personal contact. -
I really should be working on my assignment, since it's a really basic 'build a website' thing, but... I'm so burned out on this course already, augh...
Plus there's the WHS assignment distracting me from the actual IT work. At least the 'talking to clients' assessment is relevant, even if it's annoying.1 -

I would definitely recommend EzPrint to anyone who is looking for good service, good quality namecards at super great discounted price ! The person-in-charge was very patient, and asked for relevant information to ensure the best quality printout to our best input contribution. Looking at the incredible, extremely unbelievable LOW price quoted, I felt there must be hidden cost here and there.

LabotomiZed crazy fucking garbage !!
Until they showed up in this state no two days were the same now all of them are because they’re not alive
They’re not human
And they’re not relevant
They are happy tucked up slaves that liars use to manipulate everyone through their brainless smiling doopty doo bull shit !2 -
This is a question for any employers or whoever has an opinion, would you personally as a company hire somebody that was self taught, showed eagerness to learn, had little experience and no relevant qualifications.7

Recent Software engineering graduate. (NO RELEVANT JOB EXPERIENCE also not a great programmer)
Most of the software engineers I have met are working in web development and mobile dev, I understand web and mobile I understand they are hard and require a lot more with APIS CLI and all the other things but I don't understand where is the engineering part in them. I also don't know what am I supposed to do as a software engineer.3 -
