I'm gonna rant about how Discord does not let you disable 2FA after having it enabled if you forget the code they provide for cases where you don't have access to the 2FA in the first place and I lost a damn account to that :/8

Here’s to a hopefully better 2024!
Let’s all tell our bitchface thundercunt micromanagers to fuck off, find better employ elsewhere, and finally make progress on that side project that was our world several months ago.
And if the world continues going absolutely mental, may all of you find a peaceful meadow away from everyone and build yourselves wonderful little cottages.4 -
Measuring programming progress by lines of code is like measuring aircraft building progress by weight.5

You were hired, not adopted.
The company is not your family.
The office is not your home.
And your boss is not your friend.
You owe nothing there beyond what you are being paid for.5 -
I must use windows at work and after 5 years of using mac I can say that windows is fucking loud, fucking beeps everywhere. Like you fucking do anything that has no results it’s beep - that’s fucking crazy I feel like I’m on some fucking road with assholes all over the place beeping on me.
I can work in silence on my mac, no software beeps by default.
Fucking Hell how can you listen to beep all day ?18 -
Splash pages. Remember that crap from 20 years ago? That was a home page with some "click to enter" nonsense to get to the actual home page. Laughably stupid.
Today's empty home pages where you have to scroll down to get to any real content is exactly the same moronic pattern, just by another name: showing off useless design wankery and forcing user interaction to bypass it. Fuck you if you still do that shit.29 -
When did avocados become so popular?
10 years ago almost no one knew what they were and now they're more prevalent than hummus 🥲32 -
Not a deadline but I once worked for a company that regularly asked for “accurate estimates” which I found hilariously oxymoronic7

My ass of a supervisor threw yet another bomb my way.
He basically said I would fire you if I could, but I don't have a valid reason, however I will not give a good grade for your dissertation because you don't do exactly what I told you. (not exact words, that was just the gist)
So I need to start looking for a new supervisor and a new department. He is not letting or helping me grow. I can't be under this fucking much stress, do this much fucking work and stay sane.
Gonna go cry now. Bye.21 -
Living with a 1yo rugrat is like having an agent of entropy at home.
Need a way to hook up /dev/urandom to this chaos generator1 -

> They start sending promotional emails and stuff
> Don't mind them at first, but slowly and steadily it grows
> More promotional emails make phone ping unnecessarily
> Get frustrated and hit "Unsubscribe" from the mailing list
> 10 minutes passes
> Phone pings and gets picked up to check
> Same company sends an email saying "You've been unsubscribed. You won't receive any more emails from us."
WHAT BULLSHIT PRACTICE IS THIS???3 -
Year 2023
phone charges from 10 to 100% in <30min
battery holds for 3-4 days
... I still can't believe it.
What kind of black magic is this...23 -
The fucking cunts didn't approve my PR because "it wasn't necessary to do it like this". My PR would have fixed some technical debt, but yes, fuck you too if it doesn't fit your shitty narrative.8

Interviewer: So, we were researching you online and came across your devRant profile.
Me: Ok, I'll see myself out. Thanks.5 -
Compiling a project (Not BIG but still pretty big)
C# compiler : YOLO, you have 12 Cores ? I'll use 12 cores. BAM : 3 seconds, compiled !
SASS compiler :
Rolf, I'm gonna take file by file, recompile all dependant files to produce a single file. 2 Seconds per file. X 150 files.... 6 Minutes SASS is still running....2 -
It's a shame devRant has gone to hell, but as the moderation seems to be non existent now in a time it's desperately needed, today I kill my ++ subscription.
This was the first community and probably the last I actually thought was worth investing in and making the most of, but it turns out I lost that gamble.
It's a shame really, this place used to be the absolute highlight of my day, you guys... and of course ladies, got me through a lot in life and a lot in my career and I'll appreciate the good times, but these days; well I don't even feel good about supporting this place, how the turns have tabled.

I did get into the Information Systems - DevOps Master's program at the uni I wanted (which is the only one that does exactly that). I am trying my best at it now...5

My previous manager reached out to me (we still work at the same company; different clients/projects/countries). Offered a very temporary project (1-2 months tops). I look at the client's requirements -- sounds super easy, doable in 1 month.
I dig more into the docs, details, other references. Turns out, this invitation has been published publicly and anyone could reach out to them applying for the project. Even I could, outside of my employer.
And the budget is $60k
And now I'm a bit mad at myself for not finding this page earlier. Had I been accepted for the job, I'd have earned $60k in 1 fucking month. And now I'll only get my usual salary
FUCK!
Definitely adding that website to my bookmarks.1 -
My Ryzen CPU got quite hot, and hence also loud, under sustained all-core workloads. The CPU boost doesn't bring that much performance in these workloads (but it does in gaming), so I made two Linux bash scripts.
One does the actual boosting, cpu-boost.sh: https://pastebin.com/K9YShNM6
The other uses Zenity as GUI wrapper so that this can be hooked into the start menu, cpu-boost-gui.sh: https://pastebin.com/X7rhZ8DV
Now I can change it on the fly, even via GUI. Thanks to some sudoers settings (see comments in the first script), I don't even need to enter a password. Obviously, this is only for personal machines, not advisable on servers.
Maybe someone else finds this useful.3 -
Task: Deploy MinIO in k8s cluster
Me: deploys the first docker image found on google: bitnami/minio
MinIO: starts
Me: log in
MinIO: Fuck you! There's a cryptic error: Expected element type <Error> but have <HTML>
Me: spends half a day trying out different vendors, different versions, different environments (works on local BTW)
Me: got tired, restored the manifest to what it was at the beginning. Gave it the last try before signing off
MinIO: works 100%
wtf... So switching it back and forth fixed the problem, whatever it was. Oh well, yet another day.6 -
I never understood people complaining about their managers until I got a new one and started to ask the most clueless things.3
