Today I learned:
`/usr` stands for “universal system resources” not “user”
`/dev` stands for “device” not “development”
Had no idea.29 -
I just helped one of our cleaners get Internet since the management whitelisted devices that can get WiFi access.
I believe that anyone, regardless of position, must have equal access to the resources in this company.11 -
My interviews to hire a Junior Dev will begin this week. Here's how its gonna go down.
Me: Star Trek or Star Wars?
My Supervisor: WTF? How is that relevant?
Human Resources: Let's see what he says.
Applicant: Battlestar Galactica
Me: Nice. I can deal with that.
Me: Tabs or spaces when indenting your code?
Supervisor: ... ?
Human Resources : ...
Applicant: Spaces.
Me: GTFO you imbecile! Next!28 -
dfox please put in a "support us" feature of some sort that lets us watch ads of our own free will. I hate using your resources while not working for it at all.46

Hello, mister Boss man. If you'd please stop referring to me and my colleges as "resources". K, thx.4

The number of people using high end versions of mac just for working on some spreadsheet and watching videos on youtube is just too damn high..15

https with resources that use http is like leaning in dramatically for a kiss then sneezing on her.

Corporate proxies that block resources web developers can't work without are the worst, preventing npm and composer from working at all. Easier to work from home than at work.1

I tried the beta version of Mozilla Firefox Browser.
I opened 10 sites which consists of social media, email and youtube. And I found out it consumes less RAM resources than Google Chrome. Not bad Mozilla.
Here is an article about it: https://thenextweb.com/tech/2017/...25 -
— Java is too heavy on resources! And desktop apps made with it give you this fugly, custom GUI that doesn't blend with your OS's UI in any way!
— What about Node and Electron?
— Oh, these are amazing!10 -
Today - after a successful launch of my own GitLab-Server - I finished my other project!
It's a Resouce Panel for my Homeserver to check it's stats like:
- CPU usage
- RAM usage
- Network Traffic
- Disk Space
It works like a charm and only need php <3
If you guys want a download link, I'll send one in :)52 -
Just wrote a (PHP based) proxy which can cache resources being requested and serve them to clients.
The idea is that (I'm going to write a firefox add-on for it too, yes) you can install the add-on and any resource (js/CSS, general web resources which would be downloaded off of googleapi's etc) hosted with Google would be proxied through the server running the proxy, meaning that one wouldn't have to connect to the mass surveillance networks directly anymore as for static resources.
I think checksum verify stuff would still work as the proxy is literally a proxy, the content will be identical to the 'real' resource. (Not sure about this one, enlighten me if this isn't true)
Input appreciated!17 -
After seeing @Gregozor2121 share, I searched around in my bookmarks for similar stuff. Here are a couple of links that I feel is useful for everyone:
A massive list of Free programming books.
https://ebookfoundation.github.io/f...
(Also do explore anything marked as "awesome", cause it literally is awesome!! They have got tons of lists of resources for most programming languages, free software lists, famous stackoverflow answers, quotes & even Pokemon!!)
I also had this bookmarked:
https://github.com/chubin/cheat.sh
Basically cheat sheets at your command line. Pretty neat utility.8 -
Sometimes it's just disgusting to explain something to a noob who doesn't take your advice into account and continues to look for information from unreliable resources.2

Developers aren't just resources that you "utilize".
We are human beings with thoughts, aspirations, creativity, hopes and fears.
Your position doesn't make you entitled to treat others less.2 -
When did hackathons become competitions for developing websites, and move away from being competitions for gaining access to network resources (ie: hacking)?14
-
Web advertising has really gotten out of hand.
Most news sites dedicate more real estate to ads than actual content. Even worse, sites like Bloomberg scroll like a janky piece of shit because of all the gaddamn ads constantly loading resources, and phoning home to help the fucks spy on me.
Marketers ruin everything.6 -

Sometimes, I think Android Studio is using my resources to actually mine bitcoins whenever there's a grade build.2

Finally I understand what it is like to use a language that does not have any extra resources like stackoverflow or tutorials.
Using ReasonML for my final year project and the only resource I have is the API doc ☹️9 -
It's gotta be the Linux kernel.
It's so good at managing base resources on all platforms that it allows hundreds of thousands of hipsta-ass devs to write shitty code and still get decent speed.1 -
The minister of human resources is a fucking idiot. Nobody including ministry employees knows exactly what will the rules be 6 hours ahead, but they take effect immediately and failure to abide is punishable. Yesterday the HR minister said that if public schools close down, everyone will have to repeat this year. In response to this and a few other questionable decisions on behalf of schools across the country, today the government banned anyone from closing down public schools including headmasters, public health services, the police and the ministry of human resources.2

Decided to throw pi-hole in a bin and found enough resources to throw together my own dns filter in node, which if not on the blacklist - proxies the request to an actual dns, which allows to filter given just a word too (because it's regex matching), "came up" with the idea after @Linuxxx wanted to make (or made?) some big hosts file via php matching and blocking to block anything that e.g. contains "google".
By resources I totally mean I would have ate shit, if it wasn't for: https://peteris.rocks/blog/... as most docs are absolute garbage regarding node-dns54 -
It seems possible to need 1000x times more resources on a game for Linux/Mac than for Windows.
Windows has to be that efficient. 😂
(Typical typo)4 -
If you have not tried Google then I don't know what kind of developer you are... Exhaust all resources then Google.1

I'm starting to realize, that if you just know the basics of researching, you can (most of the time) find better free resources, than paid ones, for learning about new things in this field.6

How do I even start?
The guy that's supposed to be our extra resource, our go-to person, asked me why node_modules and typescript output files are not committed.
Node.friggin.modules!
And by typescript output files, I mean the compiled .js files. Shoot me now...
All he does all day is waste time! Useless calls scheduled way too early, 'cause IST & why the heck not?
And don't even get me started on his "knowledgeable" colleague who spent 2 friggin' days on figuring out how to find an element in an array.
I mean ok, I get that the language is new and the syntax is different, but boy, how I wish that was the problem! But nooo, her issue was figuring out the damn logic behind it!
Not to mention that I gotta do the code review and she keeps ignoring the changes that I ask of her unless I raise that in our daily meeting and reports stuff as done even before submitting a damn pull request. Also, I gotta shut up and take it, 'cause they are the client's internal resources, which has me ranting about it at 2 a.m. T_T
Ugh...4 -

This is a nice community and this app is a great too. No ads or promotions are also there. So how does app manage financially ,i know there is a swag store but is that enough .As community gets larger, more resources are needed to keep everyone happy ryt ? more servers etc..
Will there be a different model when this expands ?

Hello World! First post here. I'm literally done with frontend stuff. I want to design code, not to code design. Unless it's Processing. I find it cute. So.. I have a somewhat handy grasp on C++ because of a class in electronics course, Python seems quite easy to catch. I'm totally new to programming. I'd like to get into software, game development and android development (but I would like to do things cross-platform).
Which paths, resources, languages, useful books, videos, or just anything would you recommend?
To be fair, I have no coding friends so mentorship or simply finding code buddies would be great. 💜7 -
I like you enough to direct you to resources that can help you make that (ideal) app you have, but I dont love you enough to make it for you for non-profit.

dr just got a complete rewrite to make better use of resources and the API.
I am going to do some testing, then push it + some other stuff to GitHub for you guys to break (I mean try).3 -
Before implementing a feature that is one hour of work for one developer, let's have four meetings about it, a user survey, specifications and endless discussions on resources.1

A functional system bar for my window manager in Go. It's so light on system resources that htop can barely report its system usage. Also, I haven't changed anything in the code in a year and it still works perfectly.2

11.1/11.4 GB of RAM is being eaten open on boot, even though I just rebooted. Almost half of my swap is in use too. WTF! Windows is no help in explaining it either...SO ANNOYING!16

Lately I'm finding issues on git more helpful than StackOverflow.
I know those are different beasts, but for the harder/specific questions I'm finding more resources on the repos than on SO.2 -
So.. real question, how the fuck do we unionize as IT? Software development, sysadmins, etc... I really think there is a need to stop managers expecting us to handle all of the constant stress, constant learning at home and constant overtimes to meet stupid deadlines so the boss can buy a new Porsche? I've been thinking about this for a while already, anyone has any ideas?10

First day on the job, last session of debriefing, HR comes to explain us some company policies.
Among them, they want us to fill in our working hours using a smartphone app (Android & iOS only).
I raise my hand and I ask them what can I do, since I have a Windows Phone.
HR lady's face is striken with sheer terror. Since then, I'm known as the "Windows Phone Guy"... 😁
I'm more than proud of myself. 🙂
P.S. We also got some cool Windows tablet to use during our training period...5 -

Books are too expensive.
In my library, the most recent book about javascript is of 1999.
Free resources suck and are far from a full understanding.

It’s great how HR tells you to report to work on your first day to your line manager, but also tells you to attend training in another country before you start working, BUT they don’t tell you when the training is, how stuff will be paid for, or how to contact anyone in the company to find this info out5

Could probably write one myself, but fuck me I wish there was a ready plugin for vsCode or a tool that can fetch external resources into selected folders (e.g css, js, .. in the public folder) and replace it inside the code, it has been way too many times that I synced my code base and went out with my laptop, just to realize I forgot half of it has external resources like bootstrap and my mobile connection is terrible enough to call it quits.3

What's wrong with Mozilla?!
Savvy webdevs use link preloading to break up dependency chains for late discovered resources, and users like the faster loading as result. Firefox 56 started supporting that two and a half years ago. Turned out they had screwed up and it didn't work with non-cacheable resources. So Mozilla "fixed" that by disabling the feature altogether behind some config flag.
And they left it at that - still not supported. They even had patches, but decided not to merge them and instead try something different, some day.
Is Firefox becoming the new IE or what?6 -

Should I feel rewarded that after hundreds of hours of work and repeatedly stating from day 1 the code was causing larger issues that someone finally listened? I probably would if that didn't mean a complete waste of time and resources just to have to go the right route. Hate it when you're screaming something out and nobody is listening.

Every week since I started the company:
Boss "We need a special feed of resources for this customer."
We say "Great let's build support for custom feeds."
Boss says "Could we just hard code that resource in really quickly?"
This week:
Boss says "Could you make a system that dynamically let's me know what resources has been hard-coded in all special feeds, and that alerts me when a resource goes offline".
Now what should we respond?
Help us out! Best suggestion might turn in to an email to boss..7 -

Some time ago I was looking for materials regarding Ansible automation tool and realized that most of them suggests setting up the lab environment using virtualization (like VirtualBox). In my opinion that is not the best approach – virtual machines consume lots of resources and take some time to start/kill. So I decided to write a guide for setting up Ansible lab environment using Docker containers. Containers require significantly less resources than vm’s and can be bring up and down really quickly. Additional advantage is easy way of automating whole environment using docker-compose. You can find my guide at github: https://github.com/LMtx/... Any feedback is very welcome :)3

Human Resources Ministry: Releasing hospital infection numbers would cause panic
The good old negligence in the Hungarian healthcare system (infections occur because of human negligence).
It is only an article title, but inside it says that the Human Resources Ministry is delaying releasing the statistics for infections in Hospitals.

TLDR: Hungarian government is hiding hospital infection statistics from citizens with bullshit arguments -

Programming is like religion.
- you are making sombody to obey your will
- you have limited amount of resources (churches, processors, RAM, holy items)
- when you torture it, usually it will comply but not in way you are expecting
- smashing nail with hammer is not good idea (you can run out of resources again. Getting new CPU is costly as same as getting new believer)
So, who's in for new Church of Unhandled Exception?1 -

Friend just quit job, tells HR in an exit interview about how they are putting marks over people just for not share ideas or disagree on decisions of HR.
HR goes and put marks over all the people that was friend of my friend.
Even the ones related to his algorithms club.
(By putting marks I mean: points at/put final notice letters/similar)2 -
So, what are your most favorite methods of saving interesting articles about algorithms, functions or simply news so you can read them later when you have time? I find myself storing links to interesting web pages without really going back to them or remembering which link was what. I shifted to storing the links in evernote but it's still not what I'd ideally like to have...
If there are any recommended routines, apps or tools that make stored links insightful (like allowing me to add a quick description or automatically adding a sort of preview of the link), I would appreciate it!
Please note that this is primarily about saving a resource while I'm on the go or simply can't/don't want to spend too much time on the actions.15 -

Do people know of good resources (books, blogs, YouTube channels, whatever) regarding advancing to the higher levels of the tech industry?
I can find lots of resources for how to get started in your career but as I've advanced it gets harder and harder to find guidance (this is not surprising, but still lamentable). I am currently one promotion away from Senior at my company and I have no idea what to expect beyond that.
Any suggestions?2 -
That time you where asked to start a vm that would over allocate the servers resources, said I don't think that a good idea and where told to just do it.

I was working with integrating GAMADV-X (python wrapper for google gsuite) with google spreadsheet, which gives limited api calls (around 100 calls) per day.
So I was syncing the users in the spreadsheet and google group users (more than 100 or so).
I used up my daily quota -_-.
Funny thing is I knew when I wrote the code and when I fucking ran it that I will overuse the api call limit.
It slowly triggered to me that I can't work on this project until next day and the first thing that came to my mind

Hello fellow ranters!
So I just switched companies ( free from hell...rants if wanted) and now I'm facing a ton of new things I never worked with. Honestly I'm a little bit scared and thus I want to prepare a bit for the new stuff ahead of me. ( I'm a junior developer with only 4 years professional experience )
What are good resources to get some knowledge in the following topics, so I wont look stupid on my first day at the new company?
Docker
Microservice
DevOps ( CI/CD, Kubernetes )
I know some basic stuff to describe what these words mean but no work experience at all for these. My old work was purely monolithic Java EE 😅
Resources should be in English or German.
Thanks for every help!! 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️6 -

Decompile the Gmail app and check all the xml tags you might have missed.
Remember: UI and most application properties are loaded on the xml codes first (during inflation), then on activities or fragments last (especially if the views are only instantiated).

## Learning k8s
Okay, seriously, wtf.. Docker container boots up just fine, but k8s startup from the same image -- fails. After deeper investigation (wasted a few hours and a LOT of patience on this) I've found that k8s is right.. I should not be working.
Apparently when you run an app in ide (IDEA) it creates the ./out/ directory where it stores all the compiled classes and resources. The thing is that if you change your resources in ./src/main/resources -- these changes do NOT reflect in ./out/. You can restart, clean your project -- doesn't matter. Only after you nuke the ./out and restart your app from IDE it will pick up your new resources.
WTF!!!
and THAT's why I was always under an impression that my app's module works well. But it doesn't, not by a tiny rat's ass!
Now the head-scratcher is WHY on Earth does Docker shows me what I want to see rather than acting responsibly and shoving that freaking error to my stdout...
Truth be told I was hoping it's k8s that's misbehaving. Oh well..
Time to get rid od legacy modes' support and jump on proper implementation! So much time wasted.. for nothing :(10 -

startups. enhanced version of something. not hating. but just. if you own one. please migrate the human resources too. just like the system.
you may have new human resources only if your startup is having/creating a unique system.

effective development should leave minimum waste.

Is this a justified code review comment or a bully?
Code reviews are weakness of this industry which has the potential to attract bullies. Abuse of the comment box in a pull request and bombarding the employee with hundreds of comments can cause stress, frustration, burnout and finally resignation and costs of fulfillment for the organization. While companies should find and stop bullying in the work place, what kind of code review comment is considered a bully and why? Any of below traits can mean you are dealing with a bully:
1. Claims the code needs to be changed but doesn't say how. So no matter how many times you change your code, he can repeat the same comment: "Your code is still bad due to blah blah and it needs to be changed".
2. Provides how the code should be changed, but the change doesn't add up to quality, security, performance, readability, etc. i.e. "Why did you use a for loop here? Use a while loop instead". Or "Why did you write it using three classes A, B and C? Instead write it using 4 classes D, E, F and G which does blah blah". In the later case, not following the review comment, you won't get approval. Following the comment means you need to rewrite your whole code. After which, you might again receive more comments to change other parts of your code!
3. Claims the requested change is due to standards but claimed standard does exist anywhere. Internet, company wiki, university course books, anywhere. In more severe cases of psychopathy, the bullying person refers you to a link which hours later turned out to be written by himself! Have fun describing what has happened to your manager or team leader... .
4. Asks the code to be changed in a way that supposedly is closer to standard or of better quality, security, performance, etc. But the proposed way will not work and is the main reason you didn't do that in the first place. So you start arguing forever in the comment box over why his method won't work!
If you cannot see any of the above traits, then keep calm, take a breath, fix your code. Otherwise you might be victim of a bully.2 -

There's no one correct way to get better. As with any skill, practice is one of the best ways to hone those skills. Various methods for that. Researching best practices, repetition, personal projects, professional development classes, online resources like codewars, codecademy, learn _ the hard way, etc
