This may be limited to Germany:
Apparently you can get free vouchers (from 2 to 5 euros in value) on the website "pizza.de".
There is a lottery kind of game right now on this URL: https://pizza.de/casino/
If you just open the developer console and run "win()", you "win" the game and can enter your phone number to get your voucher 🤔
What idiot programmed this?
What idiot reviewed this?
What idiot put this live?40
Wrote a nodejs script which reads emails from my college searching for keywords like free, food, and refreshments. When it finds one of those it notifies me that free food is somewhere on campus.

Dear public transport,
please don't advertise your fucking free wifi if you don't give enough bandwidth to even load freaking Google.
The awkward moment when your ethernnet cable is the bottleneck in your Internet connection.
Never thought I'd see such speeds in India. Wow moment!
Side note: I was subscribed to a 50mbps plan. Last night my subscriber upgraded their network and just gave me a upgrade FREE of cost.23
Last day on the contract from hell. I'd written a project with one other person in our spare time that performed a critical business function. The following conversation was had between myself, the job thief who was handed my job and their manager, with the 10 other IBM GS "dev domain experts" assigned to that team sitting silently on zoom:
Moi: hey all, what seems to be the problem?
JT: how to update the java for requirement?
Moi: I would assume a text editor, have you tried intellij
JTM: she's talking about ticket BS-101, the data is wrong
Moi: ah, well, you might want to fix that
JT: how to fix?
Moi: update the database and update the logic that depends on it
JTM: what changes are those?
Moi: the ones described in the ticket, I would assume, I'm no longer on that project
JTM: didn't you write this application?
JTM: ok, so do you know how to fix the issue?
JTM: ok... ... Can you tell us how to fix it?
*The sound of silence*
JTM: *will* you tell us?
Moi: I would, but I'm already off the clock, and as of an hour ago I no longer have a contract. And even if I did, I don't have a contract or authorization to work on that system. I'm not actually being paid for this call.
JTM: ... What are we going to do about this?
Moi: I have no idea
JTM: ok, so we can look at getting a 1 month contract to support this
Moi: I'm sure our firm has someone who can definitely help you out
JTM: *heavy raging* ... Can you do the work?
Moi: Unfortunatley, I'm already committed to a new contract at another customer. I also don't do one month contracts. I'm an engineer, not a car wash employee
JTM: well, I don't understand how you can just leave us in the lurch like this?!
Moi: well, respectfully, it was your decision to cut me from the budget because you thought you were close enough to end of the project to get it across the line with junior resources.
Interjecting-JT: I am senior!
Moi: Right. So, basically, you took ownership of the product before go live. We advised against it, in writing, numerous times. We also notified you that we would not carry a bench, so the project resources are now working on other things. We can provide you with new resources for a minimum 6 month duration who can help you out. Also, since we've cycled out, our rate has increased per the terms of our MSA.
JTM: we don't have budget for that! How are we supposed to do this?!
Moi: *zoom glare at JT* that question is more appropriate for your finance officer and the IT director. I can send a few emails and schedule a call with your account representative and the aforementioned individuals so you can hash this out.
I'm free! 🥳 That said, still plenty of residual fodder I need to get out of my system on these guys. Might need to start my own Dilbert.12
First rant from a phone without Google services.
Put shitloads of Google/fb etc domains in the hosts file so my phone cant reach those either.
Root firewall blocks everything except for devrant, a download manager, fdroid and firefox focus.
As for my phone, I'm Google free!56
I know there are tons of Project Management stuff around, but I'm proud to develop one customized for my personal use.

I am on nepal and we don't have international payment system. I have been sending email to dev writers for their book as I can't buy it from here and all of them send me their book for free. Its amazing :)15
Friend: "the blablabla company is offering a free Java spring course"
Me: "free??? Nonono they might have bamboozled you but they won't take me"
Goes to course
Awesome experience and free
Me:"WTF? It was free"16
Free time... sometimes I want to program, learn new stuff and work on personal projects, but sometimes I just want to be a couch potato and play hours and hours of video games...4
Top 5 reasons to come to Hackathon
1. Experience for your CV
2. Free swags
4. Free swags
5. Free Stickers (swags)9
Free trials where you have to provide your credit card details beforehand are not really free trials.5
So today I had a client come in and give me a free "broken" laptop that wouldnt turn on and was covered in grease and what appeared to be dog hair everywhere. So i go through my every day troubleshooting, found the problem and fixed it. Next i disassemble the entire laptop and just start air dusting and cleaning connections like crazy. Now I'm a proud owner of a really old school laptop that I can probably keep alive for another 10 years :) This will be a perfect machine to test arch linux on 😃18
Just got my 'student email address' from university!
Now i can have free JetBrains account and access to github private repos 😍. Yay!11
Someone just asked me to create a huge web application for them for free. Their logic is I can practice Java lol.3
3 years, part time, $0.
I used to volunteer my time to an old text based rpg, handling code changes, sysadmin maintenance and the likes - back when those were a thing in the mid 2000's and money wasn't my issue in life - free for them, experience for me - win win!
Was something to get my hands dirty back in the day and contribute to an active community, but since then that place has shut down and been disbanded.24
Just got my free stickers today! I'd like to thank every single person that has ever given me a ++ on a rant. I'd also like to thank my parents for making me the man I am today, and my high school counselor who just told me yesterday that I'm failing my English class!9
It's funny. Although I try to only use open source software which is free (at least as in freedom but also as in beer mostly), I'd gladly pay for using it!
But no way on fucking earth I'd pay for proprietary software.
Because I'd love to support the people behind the free software! They made something awesome and the most awesome thing is, they made it in a way that ensures that the end users can modify it to suit their needs! That's so fucking awesome!
That's why I'd never pay for proprietary software. Can it have awesome features? Yes, of course! But can anyone except for the devs easily modify it to suit their needs? No. And that's why I'd never pay for it.19
When I was in college, I had some serious knob-heads in my class. They kept on asking where they could download free movies.
So I made a .bat file called "free movies". It had a nice icon and everything. And placed it on their desktops.
What did it do?
Kept spawning message boxes that read "do some math bitch" and opening new instances of the calculator.
It was too brilliant to see people watch their computers crash, and might I add, crash slowly, because these computers had tons of ram.
Never click on "free movies" kids.5
Why do people get so unbelievably greedy when there is something for free.
Like "it's a free game server host, let's just create 100 accounts so I can have 100 empty servers"
Or "you can get a free game key if you contribute a lot, so let's just spam until I get the key"
It's so painfully to watch.3
When a friend asks to create a website for his startup for free. FML 😔 I got bills to pay. Will he provide his service for free??14
FYI Google sends you a free Google Home and a T-shirt if you have a good standing Google Assistant Action15

--- Github unveils another round of pricing changes ---
In a move that slipped under the radar with some surprising ease, Microsoft-owned repo wrangler Github unveiled yesterday (7th January) a new set of changes to their pricing model. Unlike the last round of changes that saw unlimited private repos gracing anybody with $7 in their pocket each month - The new round sees everyone on the platform receiving unlimited private repos in a move that's been met with some serious scepticism from the community.
The company's surprisingly brief PR emission (via their official blog) states that they've made 2 major changes, "Github Free now includes unlimited private repositories" - the catch being that you're limited to adding 3 collaborators, which appears to be a move aimed squarely at businesses attempting to operate without forking over the cash for an organisation.
In addition to this there's many vague statements about the kinds of scenarios that "are now possible" via "Github free", the kind of vague nonsense that makes trousers considerably tighter in the PR department.
It would appear that anyone who was previously paying the $7 a month is now a "Pro" user, The PR emission states that "Github Pro (formerly Github Developer) and Github team are also available for developers and teams who need professional coding and collaboration features".
It doesn't seem like you're being offered a whole lot for your $7 a month anymore - a move that would be considered by almost any other company in tech as a good thing, but given that it's Microsoft has been met with warranted suspicion and concern.
Or we could just be being a set of Donny Downers about it, who knows shrug9
I can unsubscribe from your spam newsletter for FREE? HOW THANKFUL I AM!
What a great and kind service..and it doesn’t even cost anything to UNSUBSCRIBE when I DID NOT SUBSCRIBE IN THE FIRST PLACE3
Why do not more people get rid of that stupid FB app? Like seriously, free extra hours without charging 🎉8
Someone else here said that you could also get free Jetbrains products if you're a student.
Thank you very much.
I got the Student License!4
Amazon is giving ML tutorials for free for those of us interested in the field :)
I think its pretty cool that they are providing the training for free, not that they need the money dem greedy basterds!
Here is the link
"BuT aL! AmAZon iZ eViL!!" Yeah fuck it whatever. This is not for you then. Grab a dick and carry on(free dicks for everyone regarding of Amazon and AWS feelings)
Call me old-fashioned, but... I kinda liked it back in the day, when Microsoft made proprietary software, the Community made free software and everyone's "cui bono" was quite easy to answer - even those corporations involved in FLOSS did have a clear way to finance themselves.
Now, we have Microsoft coming into open source, seemingly making projects better and offering more and more "free" stuff.
"Free" Windows 10.
"Free" SaaS Office.
"Free" "Private" Repos on Github.
In general - what happened to clear and concise "I give you money, you give me stuff" capitalism like we had it in the 2000s?
I'd rather pay 20 bucks for a game on Steam than get it "free" and with ads or microtransactions - yet, many games, especially mobile, don't even offer me that option. It wouldn't be that hard now, would it?
The same goes for software. That Canonical would need to fuck their users over after Ubuntu One went to shit was obvious - they didn't offer the kind of commercial/enterprise OS'es that Redhat or SuSE sell.
What people seem to forget is that everyone needs to make a profit somehow. You don't get "free" stuff. Even the volunteers in the Open Source Community get something out of it - an opportunity to pad their CV at least, if nothing else.
Nowadays, software manufacturers have the same legitimacy as the "free" financial "advisors" you find at banks - and who could be dumb enough to trust them? Oh yeah: Almost the entire fucking society is who.
But then again, sell something and noone will want it - because they all want it for free, with annoying, privacy-invading ads or with equally annoying microtransactions, or financing based on commission - so you don't only pay ONCE, you pay until you realize you got fucked over and quit.
Capitalism used to work until all those idiots stepped in. How the fuck don't people realize that there's no free lunch in life? When have we stopped being functional people and turned into idiots.
Even worse: Those idiots think that they're entitled to something! They, who volunteered to become merchandise instead of customers, think that they have rights! Do cattle have rights? Nope. They get their "free" hay everyday and I get to buy beef, that's how it works. Moo!
Hell, they are surprised when they get fucked over by bank salespeople or their data stolen by corporations, intelligence agencies or something... What did they expect, goodwill?
Can we please make Adam Smith mandatory reading in school?! I mean, give people a chance to understand capitalism? The nonexistent "goodwill" of traders in general?9
We are on a roll here people (side note, if You are joining the site, thank you but if you are using disposable email accounts at least wait for the verification code to arrive to said account):

Remember that "little" miner thingy that some users here has thought about using for their site? Even Yours truly that does make use of Ads Networks (fuck you bandwidth is not free) even I have fully condenmed the Miner type ads for alot of reasons, like your computer being used as a literal node for DDoSing, well... how about your "Antivirus" Android phone apps being literally loaded with miner trojans too?
"When You literally stopped giving any resembles of a fuck what people think about Your massive conglomerate since You still literally dominate the market since alot of people give zero fucks of how Orwellian We are becoming at neck-breaking speed" aka Google doesnt want other webbrowsers to get into market, Its happy with having MemeFox as its competitor:

Why THE FUCK would anyone make a totally free (in the sense of price; gratuit) software project, and then not make it open-source?
What is the benefit of stifling the development of your own project when you have no monetary gain from doing so?14
A year ago I posted on here that I had been working on a game using xamarin for 2 years as a hobby project. Back then you guys encouraged me to publish it.
A year later, I have done just that. I put it on play store for free. No ads. No monetization. Feel free to check it out:
Feedback is always welcome.
It isn't a graphics heavy game. More of a strategy clicker.
Also, still some bugs I need to iron out.6
I found a vulnerability in a food delivery app api that allows me to add credit to my account. I ate my first free meal today but i feel bad about it. What should i do 😞.
1- continue hacking free credit and eating free food.
2- stop and forget i found this bug
3- report the bug in exchange for money/credit
4- report the bug for free28
After seeing @Gregozor2121 share, I searched around in my bookmarks for similar stuff. Here are a couple of links that I feel is useful for everyone:

A College Friend of mine has offered last year a free C++ course for everyone who is interested, this year he is doing the same in Rust. This guy can explain and gives a big part of his freetime for this.
He is just amazing.
Thanks to everyone who shares his/her knowledge!4
After creating a logo *for free* for a client who I thought was a friend, they started getting really ungrateful and demanded me to do things in a not very calm way ("DO THIS", "DO THIS RIGHT NOW") (yes, it was actually in caps). I kindly asked them to stop using the graphics while informing them that the license used didn't let me actually force them to remove it. After that, they started yelling about how "he'd have to redo all the graphics again". All he did was put the vector logo inside a raster circle and change the font. Yes, he really did convert vector graphics to raster and didn't use the originals at all. Not only this, but he also used *aliased* raster images.
He ended up using them anyway, informing me in a cheeky way after being kicked out of a group chat (which I wasn't even the moderator of). See the picture attached for how he did that, red is the client, orange is the moderator who banned him.
TL;DR: Don't do free stuff, regardless of how bad you think your skills are.12
Why the absolute fuck do I need to have nvidia membership to download cudnn? What evil do these mofos think people achieve with free access to a fucking programming tool?
Jesus on a bike! I nag about open science and all I end up with is always these spying morons, who purposefully disable scientists. Fuck!
I FUCKING HATE IT when you have a free day and you are so happy about it, because you can work on your projects, study things you want
you sleep a little bit longer, wake up
And suddenly you find out that you need to go to the other fucking side of the city in 3 hours and spend there half of the day.
There goes my free day...5
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been charged with 17 new counts under the Espionage Act for "unlawfully obtaining" and disclosing national defense information.
Massive attack on media freedom and free speech.7
A lot of brainwashed people dont care about privacy at all and always say: "Ive got nothing to hide, fuck off...". But that is not true. Any information can be used aginst you in the future when "authorities" will release some kind of Chinas social credit system. Stop selling your data for free to big companies.

Our government just voted on a law that extends overtime legally like crazy.7
As a side project, I've been helping out a friend build a website for free.
friend: I need more of your commitment for this project. We're about to get a huge client!
Me: Yeah you've been saying that for a year. Dude, I just don't have time to waste in projects that are not givine me any money.
friend: HOW DARE YOU! ARE YOU BLACKMAILING ME?!?!
ugh... not my friend anymore10
Ok fellow ranters. I've scoured the internet for hilarious and enraging stories of programmers being asked to either work for free, or for stock options, or to hack (crack) stuff, etc.
Here's my latest one. A friend who's obsessed with crypto came up with a "great" idea which was for me (of course) to build a landing page for a fake company to trick people into submitting their crypto wallet keys and all that. What started as a joke quickly turned into my friend getting mad at me for not wanting to actually make it lol. Like seriously wtf is with people. All the reasons not to do that scheme are plainly obvious!
Next. Some person who worked for a company I consult with pulled the generic. "I have this great app idea" line & proceeded to of course ask me to "not steal it" lol. It was just an app that would list gluten free restaurants... That's hardly even an idea!!
But what's fucked up about all this is my friend from the first story is so obsessed with becoming a "crypto millionaire" he actually resents me now for not
1. being obsessed with crypto
2. not committing cybercrime on his behalf
Anybody else have enraging stories about stuff people have asked you to do?5
People still need to understand that open source! = free software. It means source code is free but it does not guarantee that Software is also free. #opensource #softwaredevelopment2
dfox, trogus - you guys are so incredibly nice!
thank you so much!
(ordered stickers from the shop hoping some of the money goes to the guys and they put an extra free swag without me asking for it)1
Im back to anyone that may cared a little, so I was offline for 6 days since my ISP Ultra Hilarious to crash my state records of their paying customers and some other stuff that It took 5ever to get back, anything you guys want to share with me that may happen lately here on DevRant? Honestly, i hate math or actually i hate that i suck at it. I graduated CS and if u put a math problem any bit more advanced than basic linear equations i will turn red. I wish i was good at it. I think if i was, id be able to do much more cool shit because combining math and the ability to control a computer basically makes you a demi god.
If i had some free time i’d love to go over the basics on khan academy or something. But free time doesnt come by a lot coz we’re too busy trying to make money and id rather just rest and chill when it does.
Tho if a cute girl offered to tutor me in that free time i’d definitely say yes 🧐15

Yeey, my mom just called me that when I got home I'd have to fix the neighbour's TV. Because after 10 hours of school the only thing I want to do is fill in the role of a free tech support.3
Something strange happened the other day… I requested the "free" Community License of Syncfusion (the company that provides a lot of .net, uwp, web, etc. components).
After a few minutes they called me... although I didn't provide my phone number…
I signed up using my LinkedIn account, but there isn't my phone number there… 🤔
I don't remember I've ever shared my phone number anywhere on the internet, but ok… maybe I did in the past.
More than 800+ components for free (if you're not a big company), a really nice offer.
So I decided to send the link to my friend.
He doesn't even have LinkedIn… he created a fucking new account just for that, without any private information about himself.
10 minutes later… they called him. HOW? 😱
We checked our accounts on Syncfusion, created just before that (without writing anything about ourselves, just by clicking on "Sign In"), and they have our addresses… How do they fucking know where I live?
I still can't understand how they did it, my phone number is registered to my father, so they couldn't just search it…
The same day they sent me an email.
I answered it asking "How did you know my phone number?".
They replied: "I got your number because when you downloaded our community license you put your email and phone number.".
I never did it. They didn't ask me anything.
It'll probably remain a creepy mystery… it's really so easy for a company to steal your data, and they really do it so publicly without any problem?8
I seem to be everyone's free tech support. I'm always helping my friends and family but I don't get anything in return. 😣5
Got my stickers today. They look pretty sweet on my media laptop! Thanks guys for the free stuff!!!!2
Got my new @gatsbyjs socks! Super comfy! Thanks!

The three open source apps I prefer over "closed" ones. And that not because they're Open Source but because they are free and awesome.
GIMP2 & Blender & Audacity.
Fuck all the alternatives.
Photoshop & C4D (CC ~800€/y),
Maya & 3dsMax (each ~2000€/y),

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
For AI, in particular Deep Learning developers, practitioners, hobbyists and otherwise people interested in the field.
If you go into the Pytorch website, click on resources and scroll down you will see a link to "Deep Learning with Pytorch" by Manning publications. This will give you access to the book, a book that if memory serves me well costs about 40+ in printing and the online book format is about 29 (again, if memory serves well)
The book is currently FREE and it does not ask you for an email address, you can just tell them why you want it for and they will give you the free pdf download.
I don't know how good the book is, but have found Manning to publish really good resources.
Do with this information what you want.
And yes, I am leaving the rant tag, so that more people can see this and take advantage of the opportunity in case of being interested and not having the money to purchase the book after the promotion is done and over with. Fuck you about tags and shit.10
I guess that counts? Some of the local burger kings once had an online game they advertised, where you could win free burgers if you are the first on the highscore (the other 2 places got some sort of coupons for cheaper meals), turned out there was a score submit bug you could abuse after finishing a game (me and a colleague noticed, while trying to find some sort of bug), when I reported it they didnt care (didn't get any response, maybe spam filtered?), so I got us some free burgers, scanned in the receipt and send it again, they paniced or just realized you can generate any amount of free burgers for the time of the game being online, took down the game for a day or two, sent me a short email thanking me, thats it.4
Sorry fellow dev from another company, we really appreciated your help even though it was your free day. There is little chance you are also on devRant, but if you are we cant thank you enough debugging the dll provided by you and even supplying us with a dev version in which you made some changes for us to perform some extra tests. The changes looks promising as far as we have seen for now.
This might save our asses.
Sure Amazon, 0.02$/GB * 0.000120 GB = 0.01$, not 0.0000024$, sure, that's right.
0.05$ for what amounts to less than 2MB of data transfer in total (there's two more lines like that in the bill).
Eat a bag of dicks.
Free tier my ass, if I wanted to spend money I'd rather use Azure.3
How many here know surge.sh? it seems each time I mention it somewhere, nobody knows it, checks it out and thanks me. It basically allows you to host a static webpage on their servers - for free and with custom domain if you wish. They are also the creators of Cordova/Phonegap.3
OK, I love Linux. But I hate the whole "sacrifice-functionality-so-it-can-be-completely-free-and-open-source" thing.
I tried to install Linux a while back on my old laptop, and getting Wi-Fi to work was a nightmare. Apparently they didn't have the right driver for my Wi-Fi card, because it wasn't "free" enough for them. ugh. Most people prefer for their computer to WORK than for every single piece of code to be open source. Who modifies their Wi-Fi driver and redistributes it?
Ugh. Linux is cool, but not this part.21
Happiness is getting free T-shirt from a start up from different country for just signing up their product...
My best wishes to the company..

Just got another free burrito because they don't seem to deduct the reward points from the app but keep giving me more...1
CEO announced a bug bounty programme for devs to do stuff in their free time for additional cash.
Cash is decided by business people based on their idea of how complex the given problem is.
And it's not for bugs one could just find and fix. Only some fixes/features decided by them.
Like second shift.4
FREE .design domains! 😁
Porkbun is giving away one free .design domain to each customer, after verifying it's legit I had to share - I got a 3 letter domain!
I always have need for an extra domain or 2 and while .design is a bit long/specific it is quite new so there are lots of short names available (I registered jhb.design - jhb is my city). If you have a sense of humour there are plenty of wordplay options too ( buttugly.design, thatsanice.design).
On top of that they are offering $20 per referral for anyone who registers a .design name for free. This is so good it sounds like a scam so to test it I made the above link an affiliate link in the hope of free beer.
Let me know if you managed to register anything good!7
I saw Santa! Hopefully he's bringing me a bug free solution to this backend scoring algorithm I'm developing at work!3
Beware of scope creep. If it's a bug, fix it for free. If it's a new feature or changed from the original signed off scope, charge for it.1
Unreal just changed their licensing model, it's now free up until a gross revenue of $1mil, after that it's the usual 5%.
BOI I'M FUCKING PUMPED.12
Anyone want a free Python, PHP, or Assembly book?
Well how about all 3???
Great to be back on devrant after so many months. I just got fired from my first dev job which took most of my time and energy and gave me back weight gain and some react and Node.js knowledge.
It feels so good to be free. I never liked web development anyway.5
The perks of working in a medium large company with ~35 employees
Today there's a concert for Stargate, Alan Walker and Ne-Yo. Where we've made the video effects for Stargate.
Now we're having a summer party with our biggest clients, free alcohol and food. Later we're walking to the concert where we and our clients got free tickets.
Internal memo this morning, showing up tomorrow is not mandatory4
Recently I receive a ton of mails from cool/hip/rockstar startups. They all run like this:
"We are a innovative Startup based on a [insert some random stuff or buzzword] blockchain! If you're a student with skills and experience in blockchain, machine learning and AI willing to change the world with our sick technology and make it a better place..."
The best thing about this: since they are a innovative Startup they expect you to work for free.
But who am I to judge something so brand-new and innovative. I contacted them to find out what these dank innovations are about.
They can't even explain what a blockchain is or the basics of ML and AI, they basically just want someone do it for free...
It's still ok since no one is gonna fall for this bait... this morning a friend of mine told me he got a new job... and he even can work from home...
I'm not even mad, I just feel sadness and sorrow specially for him, because he is a good dev and accepts big times underpay and now free work, because he thinks a day off in his CV will lead him to be unemployed 😭
Fucking hate it how people successfuly manipulate kids and youth to them to work 24/7 for minimum wage or even for free and some other douchebags trying to take advantage of this 😡1
To those of you who don't know about this, if you have a Microsoft account, you can sign up for Visual Studio Dev Essentials with it. Doing that gives you 3 months free access to Pluralsights, which is a really nice website to learn new stuff. Do check it out.2
So that network decom I mentioned in my last rant... Instantly beneficial. Got some dope server equipment for free. Dual Xeons, 4C/8T 2.93 GHz, 128GB RAM, Dell mobo, yeah. Oh, and a currently nonworking C64 that I'm gonna fix up! WOO!
Im excited because I'm getting new pc parts for free.
The parts are:
* AMD 8 core CPU ( not sure which model )
* 16 GB ram
* some good graphics card ( not sure what model )
* cooling ( still not Sure what it will be, the guy was very vague )
It's also coming just before my birthday7
The sinking feeling you get when you have looked forward to working on your project for a week and your gf tells you that the inlaws will wisit on your only free days in 2 weeks.. Please aliens take me awayyyy.
Can you make me just a simple site? Only a few pages..... It won't take you long, we're family too so how about I pay 10% of the real cost??
Weeks of personal free time lost, and a fully fledged eCommerce site 28 pages deep with CMS controlled everything later....5

a former client and their client keep contacting me about the project i did for them, we couldn't agree on a new contract but they keep asking me things about the site but, if they had signed would be billable.
Sorry i dont work for free.2

Client: I want a fixed timescale and cost on this project.
Me: OK, what do you need?
Client: We need to integrate our website with our CRM system, which we're in the middle of rebuilding and don't know what data will be available from it. We also want sophisticated Google maps integration, online sale, digital agreement signing and a customer login section that works as a social network for our clients. And we want it in six months time. And an app. And we want you to pitch for free with some initial design concepts. And we want details of you project management strategy.
Me: Ok... Do you know what you want your app to do?
Client: Yes, it's an app! So how much will this cost me?
Cheapskate's website deployment stack for new projects:

TLDR; Default admin login on WEP encrypted WLAN router for getting free stuff at my hair stylist studio.
Free WLAN in my hair stylist studio: They had their WEP key laying around in the waiting area. Well, I am not very happy with WEP, thought that they never heard of security. Found the default GW address, typed it into my browser and pressed Enter, logged in with admin/1234 and voila, I was root on their ADSL router 😌 Even more annoyed now from such stupidity I decided to tell the manager. All I told him was: You use a default login on your router, you give the WiFi password for free, WEP is very very insecure and can be hacked in seconds, and do you know what criminals will do with your internet access? He really was shocked about that last question, blank horror, got very pale in just one sec. I felt a little bit sorry for my harsh statement, but I think he got the point 😉 Next problem was: he had no clue how to do a proper configuration (he even didn't knew the used ISP username or such things). Telled me that 'his brother' has installed it, and that he will call him as soon as possible. Told him about everything he should reconfigure now, and saw him writing down the stuff on a little post-it.
Well, he then asked me what he can pay me? Told him that I don't want anything, because I would be happy when he changes the security settings and that is pay enough. He still insisted for giving me something, so I agreed on one of a very good and expensive hairwax. Didn't used it once 😁
Some weeks later when I was coming back for another hair cut: Free WLAN, logged in with admin/1234, got access and repeated all I did the last time once more 😎

!rant => found a free Xamarin+Azure certification course!
So typical it started on March and will end up on 30 June (something like that) and there are some cool courses for entry level and an official certification from Microsoft if at the end you show them an app you made with the given courses ! Well I liked it and wanted to share ! Check the 'content' page for the details
Fucking hate my internet, ubisoft and steam regularly have a free weekend where a game can be played for free during the weekend. Currently The Crew 2 is free to play for this weekend. Its been downloading for 24 hours and its only at 23%. In my experience that means I can play it on Sunday evening for about two hours and have no internet the rest of the weekend.3
All of the Packt interactive workshops are free until the end of May using the code 'PACKTFREE' on checkout.
Maybe useful if you want to learn a couple of new things.
Has anyone else built any websites or apps for friends or family for free? Is it just me, or is free work always the least appreciated? The demands are also unrealistic. Meanwhile my full-time employers charges over $6000 for a week of work for the client which on some weeks is things like adjusting some styles and changing some config, and they are appreciative every time.8
Whoo! Got a free lunch from a random person I met at a meetup recently who was interested to get into coding/programming/web development4
"The era of self-regulation for online companies is over." UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright.

Just released another free open source project. I know the world doesn't need anymore tooltip plugins, but I had already done the work for my confirmation tooltip, so I just separated it out and added triggers and themes. https://github.com/HTMLGuyLLC/...16
Listen, i really understand you want to know how much a certain resource is downloaded/viewed and so on. But what gets on my nerves is to sign up my email address every fucking time i want to see your semi-tech-but-actually-selling-you-a-pile-of-sperm-fermented-shit whitepaper . yes i know there is something called disposable email adresses and such... But if stuff is 'free' as you say you have, then make it available free!
Every time i think 'hey, this is actually relevant to my interests, let me read up more on that...' i hit the fucking 'insert your email for a free download'
Fuck off! Put your fucking form in the pits of hell and seal it in a fucking fucking dome next to fucking research subject akira with 99 fucking layers of fucking nuclear blast proof wall domes! I dont want you to fucking send me your fucking spam mails about every ideafart your sales dept has fired becausz they were high on computer cleaner spray tubes and thought 'let's trick those stupid people into our marketing scheme', go and fucking jump into a barrel of highly concentrated radioactive waste!
The only thing you manage to do for me like that is to fucking close the tab i had a slight interest in and never look back again!
Am i the only one getting angry about this?2
have a couple friends now who have gotten dev jobs at microsoft. I've since turned down their offers to apply and have them vouch for me twice now - not sure if their recommendations would mean anything to begin with at such a place.
this has gotten me a lot of criticism from peers and mentors who have chided me for "throwing away a golden ticket" on my resume.
at first I declined because I sure as fuck did not believe I had the skills to last very long there - and truth is I probably still don't.
but now I see it as a case of the cliche "corporate devil" that everything I believe in in terms of software freedom is squarely against.
I mean, I don't really think I have the chops to make it far with the open source and free software communities either, but if I had to pick a dream or a goal to move towards, that would be it. I don't want money or reputation. I just want to be free to tinker with the world as I please.
maybe I'll have the courage next hacktober... but until then, I'm just gonna focus on learning and self-improvement. no one can ridicule me for being a dumbass if I'm actually putting in the effort to learn and improve, right?
would welcome any advice for aspiring open source contributors, as I'm not really sure where to begin that wouldn't make me look like a total hack (pun not intended)5
If you could choose between:
• Waiting for an original idea to do something innovative (and maybe never get it).
• Spending an enormous amount of time to recreate one of the first projects you've worked on (and loved) as a beginner, using new technologies and the knowledge gained over the years, knowing that it could be a good product but will probably not get the interest of public and will not sell well on the app stores.
• Working on a project that could work (or not) and become popular, but that doesn't really interest you.
What would you do?
Personal satisfaction or profit?
Of course I don't want to focus on profit, but I'm still a student and my free time is very short, and sometimes I work very hard (I tend to put social life, exams, health, etc. on the second place) on projects that nobody uses. My family and friends think I'm crazy, and sometimes me too.
It's something bad, isn't it?2
Yay today my power extender broke!
(the thing that allows you to connect multiple devices to one sockiet, i dont remember the correct term)
That means i need to buy the new one! Because the old one is using rivots it means i cant repair it!
Stupic fucking lead free solder! Why do you even use this shit for connections? It will create those tin wiskers (small wires) that will short shit! This is the reason why my 3 old power extenders failed! And it is propably the reason why it failed as well!1
Apparently the Schiphol (dutch airport) WiFi has a nice "feature" which makes the user think they need to accept terms, instead it's a checkbox saying "I want to do a survey for a free iPad". Talk about shitty UX...2
--Nothing it's free at this world!
---Except everything under GPL, MIT or other Open licenses LOL ;-)1

Another plug for my collection of free games.
If you see something you like it's yours for the low, low price of a pull request.
I see many people are FOSS enthusiasts here. Some only use free software on principle. I like open source alternatives too, but not every time.
As devs, our job is to make software. How can one justify preferring free software for all our needs, yet working on proprietary software?
Does advocating free software devalue your professional skills, while you're working on paid software?
If you do good work and sell your software, then someone releases a free thing solving the same problems, that's obviously bad for you.
Why should software be treated differently than other things? Have you seen a construction company building stuff for free? If you don't want to pay for your house to be built, can you find someone who builds it for you for free? I doubt that.
Yes, you can make your software free and accept donations. But you can't plan with that financially, you still need to be treated and payed as someone who creates value.
I have no problem with free software, I love the fact that many people can find the time and are willing to contribute to the public without compensation. What I'm saying is, software is a product of hard engineering work and builds upon knowledge and experience of individuals, and should be compensated like any other work.
What do you think?6
"You need to learn Angular for a new project. You can do it in any free time you have."
Where "free time" is defined as:
Any time left in between working on priority tasks or bugs, bugs which have failed testing and the weekly array of meetings, tech sessions and meetings to discuss the progress in learning Angular.
Just came across this in-browser presentation tool, sozi (free). See it in action
Just prepare a giant svg file (free inkspace) and create slides like camera panning focusing on each part of the svg file.
Just had my reasoning for not doing technical projects for interviews proven.
Pass the first 2 stages of interview (including showing some personal portfolio projects) then after a week of hearing nothing get sent a technical project to complete.
Spend every spare moment for a week polishing this thing, decent front end, quick and efficient back end, low traffic between fe, be, persistence etc.
Submit the code at midday ready for the interview the following day, only for the company to phone at 5pm and say all is fine and the code is great for the final interview (walkthrough) the next day, then phone 5:10pm phone and pull the position.
That company has just had free work done which should have cost 1 weeks worth of fees, using the premise of a job at the end of it, only to take the code that they are super happy with and run with no payout.10
I always see people who say that open source != monetarily free. While I agree that may be technically true, I think practically speaking it is not.
Why do I say this?
Well to my knowledge there isn't any successful company that makes money by actually selling open source software. There are a few companies that have become successful by selling complimentary services like Redhat with Enterprise support or Mozilla with selling ad space in their browser, but none that actually sell the software directly.1
PSA: it's national donut day and if you get a coffee at Dunkin Donuts you can get a free donut!2

The perks of working for a .NET shop:
1. 130€ of credit to burn on Azure every month, so I can run some long builds there, to have VPN/proxies for free that are not easily blacklisted and whatever else I can think of. Today I set up a VM for my wife to RDP into, so she doesn't have to do her job search on her company laptop (which is the only computer she has right now).1

Went into a client meeting to present pricing, timescales etc. for custom web app. After a short period of chit chat they tell me they've gone way over budget. They explain to me that they'll need to close their business if they don't get this thing built (the business consists of him and the other guy at the meeting). They currently have a website that is an e-commerce type deal, apart from the checkout process doesn't work! They basically want me to do it for free.
I may consider if I was going to benefit from new clients etc. but I'm not.
However, the problem is that one of my companies has been (IT) supporting this guy's other company for around 5 years. It's a bit of a shitty situation as that contract accounts for about 15% of our income.
That meeting was last Monday and I told them I would think about it. I have another meeting this Friday and am thinking I'm going to have to break the news gently ffs.3
Is there a good, free software only, security and privacy focused Linux distro out there? I am basically searching for an OpenBSD but as GNU/Linux.10
I want my free market capitalism damn it !
So, where does one go to buy things that are in short supply ?3
Go to the nearest luxury hotel
Ask the receptionist where the spa is (usually in the basement)
Go to the spa
Somebody will ask you if you have a room in the hotel
FYI: Oracle Cloud has 2 servers "always free". Probably useful for some of you. Personal projects n such.
Rant: I've just submitted a customer support ticket coz the sign up isn't working for me.10
Created a website for a client at a pretty low quotation. Set up 2 email accounts and provided step by step instruction on how to do it. Client now expect me to do it for all 13 of his employee with migration. For free. Told him i will need to charge extra for this, he claims that i didnt mention right at the start. Is this my fault? Should i do it? Please share.7
I was just at lunch with a recruiter (food tastes better when it's free), and he asked me what coding is like. My response: have you ever wanted to be bipolar, but you didn't know how? His reaction was probably the funniest thing I've seen this month.1
A certain app I use occasionally has some premium features that I have been too cheap to buy. Just found the full source code on GitHub. An hour later I have all the premium features for free. Stealing? Nah, my conscious is clear.
To all indie devs out there: if you have paid features, don't make the app open source.11
How to eat for free at McDonald's:

Any investors on here? I was looking to start buying stocks but didn't want to pay the ridiculous fees and ran into Robinhood. Dude! They gave me a free share of Zynga just for signing up lol. Only worth $5 but totally awesome. Yes, this is an affiliate link, but I'm not sharing because of that. I'm sharing because it's an amazing service I want you guys to take advantage of. If you use my link, that's just a cherry on top. Check it out!! https://share.robinhood.com/shanes9...3
I just had an internship revoked after accepting the position due to "fundamental difficulties with hiring a high school student". What the fuck does that even mean?!?
Well at least I now have an immensely free schedule this summer.
I don't get why there are laws restricting the use of my website.
Let's say I pay for the electricity, internet, housing and everything related to my server and the website that is hosted on it.
This makes the computer my property and I allow connections to be made over the internet to it, and people accept whatever I send back to them and their machine acts based on that information.
In no way am I forcing or attacking their machine, so why are the restictuons on what data I can send (other than illegal images and such, I'm talking about cookies and privacy stuff).
Their machine is the one setting and storing cookies, not mine. They're entering their personal info and sending it to me, nothing is forced and most the time it is written out what will be done with that data.4
Would putting a website that helps people download pdfs/ebooks for free (aka illegally) on my portfolio/resume be a stupid idea?8
When you put bread in the toaster then start programming and forget about it.
*finds it 6 hours later*
Ooh! Free food!
What a fucking boring day.
I had a heated argument with a fellow colleague because he wants us to add a feature to a certain product for free. He thinks am so money minded as I was pressuring him to charge the feature but he's defending himself that we are just a start-up.
Am left wondering if I was wrong or if giving free stuff will pay our bills or should start-ups code some stuff for free.....4
It's 2021 and I'm still pretty much never willing to pay for software. I hunt and scour looking for free plans or ways around paid plans. Trials are good.
I've even searched "warez".
And the funny thing is, I'm not cheap, I'm jealous.5
What was the name of the service for acquiring domains for free (or was it with privacy(?)) that was trendy a couple of weeks ago here?
I might be thinking of buying a domain5
Tody I finally decided to go Google free in my device. Now I have 0 Google services in my phone and so far I'm loving it.
All apks can be found on apkmirror and f-droid but devRant is not available on any of those platforms so I have to restore my previous backed up apk from playstore.
Yeah and I'm not on any socialmedia whatsoever like FaceCrap and InstaHeadache. Feels like my phone would last for 2 days on single charge.2
Who doesn't like free* games?
I like me some prime day games!

Free python courses/study material? (online)
Thinking of learning python bcuz of how popular it is. Any websites/apps for beginners (that also extends to advanced without IAP or other form of payments)?
Thanks in advance.19
GitHub now offers unlimited private repos for its free plan users...
Max contributors for those repos will be 3 which is expected.

I had to recreate my Revolut account this christmas, and now I created a Wise account too. Two more years of AWS free tier and GCP demo credits.2
Most of you might already know this but for those of you who don't - Pluralsight is offering all of their courses for free, for the month of April. Anyone who wants to learn anything, now's a good time to start. Besides, you can get a skill badge on your Stack Overflow profile if you manage to clear any test.
Another "here's my idea, build it for free" posts. Where do these people come from? Also, I know the poster said $15/hr is a deal, and it is, but I don't price my work anywhere near that low. Does this seem normal to anyone?
those who are wondering what is that software which is bug free, here is the ans;
tex ia bug free and has bounty to find bugs.1
It takes a fair bit for me to enjoy an online course, let alone want to recommend it.
if anyone is looking at using their "free" time learning something new during these troubling times, i would go look at the Packt Courses.
@whocares suckered me in the other day, and i have to admit, i dont regret it.
So with that i would actually say to anyone wanting to get into:
- Data Science
then checkout these workshops.
you can actually enroll into all of them using the free coupon, so theres that ☺
one down side is the lack of dark mode, but im sure we all have browser extensions for that.2
How many of you actually work on projects on your free time?
I'm thinking of building a common UI pulling lfg projects from Devrant collabs, Twitter, Reddit, etc... But I have no idea if it's something people would want.
Smash that subscribe button and let me know what you think on the comment section

Hotel Suite with free Wlan! Free yes.. but wtf.. 256kb... Maybe they still use dialup with AOL free CD's ?? We will never know...1
Anyone tried Fat Free Framework? (PHP)
It's actually really nice, a little bit fiddly, but still nice.3
I am student in computer science in 2nd year, and I want to increase my skills. This is why I am searching a team which is on a (or many) free software project. I assume that I will not help "a lot" on the project because of m'y low skills. So, if someone is ready to learn me something, I am okay.
I have bascis on C and C++, JS, and mid-level on JAVA and PHP5
My colleagues who work with AWS got trainings and I was supposed to pick out training that roughly corresponds to the content of the AWS training just in Azure. I did that. And as an answer I get a link to the Microsoft Virtual Training Days, where I can do the Fundamentals course and then take the AZ900 exam for free. Cool! Why should you spend money. It's all in the Microsoft documentation.1
I just had a customer who wanted the internet to be free. He didn't see why he needed to pay a company in order to get his internet...
Kill me now...
Hi fellow devs and sysadmin's I'm currently working on building a portfolio of applications I build and servers I have setup as I'm planning on working freelance I'm already MTA certified and if I had the money also N3 certified if anyone needs a server setup or something like that feel free to contact me on my website https://haazen.xyz.
Feel free to ask me anything to test me or to send me fun assignments to test me or let me learn new things to as I love learning more.3
I can't stop laughing at the irony of this post : https://freenode.net/news/...
in fact, all posts from rasengan on the freenode "news" site are laughable. If you want a good weekend laugh, you should subscribe to the site.
I rarely read freenode's news because it was mostly only technical update posts that wasn't too relevant to me. But now, this person is using an IRC network's news site as their personal ranting space and probably want to pass them off as "news".
oh, and apparently, they have too many designations that they need to use a new one with every new post.12
Trying to contribute to a translation project on Crowdin, then remembering that my 14 day trial is expired.
Why does Crowdin, a platform trying to help people get translations for their projects make you pay? Couldn't they have more of like a GitHub payment model (free for basic features, pay to get more)?1
Today the communication is data driven. Telecom operators can offer free voice calls, but no free data.1
Saw a few guys having some issues picking up on angular 2. There's currently a really good course on angular 2 that's about a week and a half old, so pretty up to date, on pluralsight. Just search for angular 2 and order by date.
For those who don't wanna/can't pay, you can get 3 months for free on it by signing up on Microsoft devtools. If anyone wants direct link just say it(not sure if allowed).
Btw, I'm not affiliated what so ever with pluralsight, although I really like it. Just passing some information specially regarding angular 2 which is a pain to learn due to legacy code.3
How I got my first Free Swag?
I stole it?
So it dates back to year 2016. After learning about open source project and working with few organisations, I noticed few contributors and developers with t shirts having logo of the company or organisation.
I mean if you see a guy wearing google tagged t shirt don't think he works in Google, he might have purchased it.
Next, I started searching for ways to obtain one. I reached and texted developers and all they told me were two golden rules.
1. If you develop something or update something, showcast it.
2. Always show the organisation what you do for them, even if it small contribution.
After this I started mailing and texting the contact mail id of companies and organisation I worked and contributed. Some texted me- no we don't have free items, some said we can't ship to India.
But out of 100 replies with 85 negatives, I recieved 15 positive replies. I was amazed to know that I'll recieve one.
You know what I was showered with
And many more.....
This Rant is for you to motivate and showcast what you do.2

Just discovered someone I told about a hack for the computers in school (nothing difficult just booting from a USB) had a link to C2K the company that provides the system and told them about it and now they've patched it up, so in a way, it's my first security vulnerability report, in another way, I can no longer play games and program in free
Does anybody know a good free software (open source) basic programming language written in python? Preferebly on github😉3
There was a rant about an online hoster "comparable to Google", "for free" and "with moral" this morning.
After I asked how it makes money and pays the services one gets for free, the rant got deleted.
I should have kept the name of the hoster in mind, to know which one I will never use, obviously. This is too suspicious.8
So - I basicly have free data on facebook and messenger traffic. Is there a way I could possibly tunnel all my other traffic through facebook which would kind of give me unlimited data?1
Can we make a cluster which is moderately powerful using all free cloud computing services available online like Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Oracle cloud, Microsoft Azure etc.3
I’m trying to document a library I work on, and I need to figure out where to host it. Ideally it would be free so if I ever move on I don’t have recurring costs. I would mostly be hosting tutorials there.
how many emails shall I send for payment reminders?
This was supposed to be a day's job and it's been a month for the delayed payment. (Also this was supposed to be a favor)5
I'm not involved in the policy management, but my office uses Google account management. I also have to free trial one of the services I use, because my account got pwned in an attack long ago.
Turns out, my office gives us 6 different emails to choose from. Two different usernames (old, from 8 years ago, and the new one) as well as three website names (.net, .com, and another website).
Literal gold for 30-day trials.
A guy asked for retweet so that he can get free chicken nuggets for a year. Can I ask upvotes so that I can get free swag ???2
Hi, guys. I'm looking to get into Android development (Xamarin) and to build some simple apps first.
What I have in mind is something trivia-like, with a hosted database (can't find any free & reliable public APIs).
Do you know of any free downloadable databases on the topics of:
http://www.usabledatabases.com/ seemed promising, but it's not free (or I couldn't find any free DBs, as they don't have a price filter).
Thanks in advance!
With all this uproar about MS taking over github I’m so glad I decided to go self hosted. I’m currently using gogs.io and have been for the past year or so. Granted it doesn’t have all the features that github/bitbucket does, but it’s also free for an infinite amount of users/private repos.2
>was talking with Friend about editors
>friend uses atom
>I use sublime
>"man I can't believe such a great editor is free!"
>"yeah man but at least atom is funded by a company"
>80$ cha ching
>looks at vim
>"nahhhhh it's all community efforts"1
Image, resize, blur, rotate etc free with cloudlfare cache. Used recently and is quite fast and easy for all.
I guess it can qualify as API
I'm really curious what you guys think abot the free software foundation and the mentality of the free (libre) software. If you agree why? If you don't, why not?8
I fucking hate shits around Wordpress. It's the most free-but-not-free software I ever used.
Someone knows a good website where i can found all free (not free but with paid version) themes?4
Typora was the best (closed-source) free markdown editor. As soon as it hit the first stable release, it became non-free. Luckily, you can still download the last beta from https://typora.io/releases/all (click Dev/Beta releases -> scroll down to 'More Beta')
Just in case people weren’t aware you can get all syncfusions controls and reporting/data stuff for free under the same terms as the VS community license (ie you can sell anything you make) here https://syncfusion.com/products/...
So I'm wondering if anyone here have claimed the free swag from Codeship? If I'm understanding things correctly you can get 10(?) T-shirts for free? Can anyone confirm or deny this? Sounds too great to be true ^^12
is anyone from India received the free stickers from devRant ?? It’s been almost a year.... still waiting !!!7
