Well here's how I see things going:
Intel and AMD ditch their assembly architectures for Scratch, because drag and drop is very popular lately.
The Boolean is renamed to the biggot by SJW leaders for only supporting binary views.
You must first ask consent to add an item to a linked list, because forcing two items together promotes rape culture.
Apple removes the "h" and "7" keys on all laptop models and gives no reason for their actions.
Linus Torvalds grows an extra middle finger, and it still isn't enough.
Nintendo makes Mario gay and Luigi black to be more inclusive.
LG makes a curved monitor that curves away from you rather than towards you. People buy it in confusion.
Everyone makes the same ad revenue on YouTube, and it is rebranded to OurTube. Luckily, they were able to keep the color scheme.
People finally realize that machine learning is just math, and stop using it everywhere. (Just kidding lol)
AMD and Gucci merge. Nobody understands why.22 -
Since childhood I was extremely creative. At ~7 I took my family's laptop and started downloading level editors for Super Mario.
After that, I discovered a strange site to create games (similar to Scratch).
One month later the PC had too many malwares and adwares. 🤗1 -

In my Software Engineering II class, our teacher begins a overview of NoSQL DBs. A buddy of mine leans over and asks me "A SQL DB walks into a NoSQL bar, do you know why he left?"
I said, "No idea".
He said, "Because there were no tables".
Our teacher heard me laugh, so my buddy had to explain the joke to the entire class. Needless to say, the whole class got a kick out of it! -
Technology never stops to amaze me.
I bought hdmi stick with nes emulator, connected it to power using usb on my tv directly no power adapter needed - only cable, it has 2 remote pads powered by batteries, all fits into my pocket and it has removable sdcard that I can connect to my computer and upload games.
I can go to someone’s house, bring up this little fella and we can play games together. It only took 40 years to do it.
Damn I remember playing, mario, contra or micro machines as a kid.
Spent 8+ hours playing great old games already lol.
I just need portable 60 inch tv screen or projection screen and battery that would power it for at least 8 hours and fit to my pocket and my life is complete.
Imagine you go to the bar, sit, grab a beer and play mario with random people all night.6 -
I was about to use the Duolingo but I think it triggered me to hard. 2 mistakes in a row.
1. I have Portuguese origins and they used the Brazilian flag
2. I was born in Luxemburg and they just used our flag for The Netherlands (I know they're pretty similar but cmooooon)15 -
Started with planning to develop super Mario Bros. Using python.
Ended up with a music player which can play ogg (and mp3 files with 320 kbps bitrate) .
Why!?3 -
I fucking hate when I update my apps and they don't describe what they changed. Like the latest spotify update description:
We’re always making changes and improvements to Spotify. To make sure you don’t miss a thing, just keep your Updates turned on.2 -
>First grade
Teacher: This is a Keyboard, this is a mouse... blah blah blah
Now play Mario!
There was also some space racing game or something installed on the computers. We weren't allowed to play that game, so of course, we did what we weren't allowed to. It was always fun to sneak in a game when the teacher wasn't looking or wasn't around.
We were also taught MS Paint. I "painted" a squirrel in one of the lab sessions, the teacher loved it and showed it to everyone. Everyone applauded and then I became the MS Paint Guru (for them). Fun times..9 -
When I play "Super Mario" in computer and I wanted to do this game by myself. That's first moment that I want to become dev.

Some time ago I posted a picture of a Mario Kart. Now the family is complete! Friday night racing around the office is cool af

I'm taking an Intro to Programming course along aside an Intro to Computers class so I already know about basic programing, still very new to it though! At the end of the Intro to Comp, we're learning about programming and a classmate was having a hard time understanding assignments and variables.
I explained the idea of the input command at least three times and he kept trying to print out a statement he just wanted to write in instead of printing out the input that the user will enter. He also assigned the same name to different variables.
Explained that what he was doing was not versatile and not useful, explained in an example situation, explained by writing some lines of code myself (THRICE), and he still had trouble understanding me. I didn't want to hold his hand the entire time.
Glad that I was called to leave early since I might get too frustrated if I had to stay back and continue to help him.
Hope he managed to finish the assignments successfully though! Feel kinda bad now...2 -
There is a mark on the whiteboard hanging behind my desk that says:
"Days without people walking on <me> doing something weird"
Thus far. The head of the department has walked on me making fun of Indians(I make fun of everyone, my indian brothas from another mothas don't be upset, I particularly make fun of Mexicans), going on a monologue about how the white ranger rules supreme. Why Mario could totally destroy Mickey Mouse in a fight, why my manager is secretly in love with me(with her listening intently into my reasons) and singing the bad touch going "mimi"...dude just make mimi sound like words and you'll get what I mean.
Sometimes the dude just pauses by my desk to check if I am saying anything stoopid.
Work can be really funny sometimes.10 -
I scored a GBA sp (with Super Mario Bros 3) at my local Goodwill today for $20. I always wanted one as a kid, but I almost didn't get it cause some asshole found it first. I saw him fumble with it for a solid 3 minutes before he could get it to turn on. Finally he put the cartridge in the right way and flicked the power switch. I thought it was all over. At that point the dumbass realized it worth something but instead of buying it HE HID THE GAMEBOY AND LEFT. I wasn't going to wait for him so I bought it myself 😂.6

Dat awkward moment, when you think you’re smart because you made AI that can beat first level of Super Mario Bros, but then you see Google Duplex AI2

So I bought a gaming laptop a while back, and Cyberpunk 2077 binaries got leaked a few days ago... So I wanted to play it, kinda. It looks really good from the screenshots. Friend asks me "what CPU / GPU do you have"?
My gaming laptop is a Y700 so an i7-6700HQ and a GTX 960M. Turns out that even at low settings this thing probably won't pull even 30 FPS.
So even with a gaming laptop, you don't get to do any gaming. 10/10 would buy again! I'll enjoy Super Mario because imagine caring about gameplay rather than stunning graphics that you need tomorrow's hardware for, and buy it yesterday! And have it already obsolete today.
Long story short, I kinda hate the gaming scene. I'm not a gamer either by any means. Even this laptop just runs Linux and I bought it mostly because some of its hardware is better than my x220's. Are gamers expected to spring the money for the latest and greatest nugget every other month? When such a CPU and GPU alone would already cost most people's entire monthly wage?
What's the point of having a game that nobody can play? Even my friends' desktop hardware which is quite a bit better still - it only pulls 45 FPS according to him. Seriously, what's the point?12 -
Carmack: "Hi, I am Carmack, your AI artist today. I create high definition 3D interactive world by listening to your verbal request or brain-computer interface."
User: "Hey Carmack, create me an ideal cyberpunk world."
Carmack: "World created. Here are the main resources used to synthesize your defintion of 'Cyberpunk'. Done. Is that what you want?"
User: "Hey Carmack, can you make it less similar to Coruscant, but more vintage, and more like Blade runner more like Africa, mixing super Mario galaxy. Also add a mansion similar to this link and the hot girl in this link. Make her ideal. Make the world ten times bigger than GTA V"
Carmack: "Alright, bro. The definition of "ideal" has been data driven by the norm on internet.
Done. Is this what you want?"
user: "Yes, test it in VR"
Carmack: "Enjoy."3 -
My dad was an IT and as a kid when our NES broke and I couldn't play Mario he showed me F-22 lightning (an aerial combat game) and I thought the missiles were fireworks. I always called it the airplanes and fireworks game. Good memories.

That time when you are coding and you recieve your free stickers. This is going to be an even more awesome day!
Thanks a lot team dev rant! Greetings from Argentina.
PS: yes, that's a Mario cup ;)4 -
If anyone has used the super Mario 64 online mod, it's extremely easy to crash all clients connected to any server. You have to send a chat message payload with a length greater than 256 characters. The clients do not do any bound checking and write the payload directly to super Mario 64 memory. This causes all clients connected to the game to crash. I will leave how to send a chat payload > 256 characters up to you. I've confirmed my method works!2

AI is never going to write code efficient like Humans do.
The whole AI, neural network bullshit is overrated.
Training a Network to recognize Images or playing Super Mario is far away from writing code.4 -
My family keeps telling me the same old story over and over again about me when I was 3 years old, holding a Gameboy in my hands, cheering each time Mario died (due to the failure theme I'd guess, didn't have any other sadistic tendencies though). Over the years my gaming ambitions became a little more purposeful. ;)
However it's not surprising that I started thinking about how games are developed and how I can start my own.
So when I was around 14 I went to the local library and borrowed the first game development book striking my eye.. unfortunately it was about Delphi. But hey, I was young and naive.
Surprisingly, I didn't surrender back then.. but to be honest, I do not recall one line of Delphi. :D -

So I am driving home and stop at a light. Some dude in a truck behind me starts flipping me off at the light. The road is 45mph and 2 lanes. I am in the right lane. So when the light changes I speed up to 35mph so he can pass me. He decides to tailgate me and honk at me. So I stay steady and he eventually goes around me. I keep my distance. But it looks like he is going to the same place as me. Before I get to the road I want to park for my destination he takes the same road and parks his truck and trailer where I normally park facing the wrong direction. Okay, wtf, but okay. So I go further down the road to turn around and park somewhere else. He guns his truck to cut me off from that parking spot. I have to hit my brakes to prevent hitting him. I raise my hands in the are like "why?" I then finish turning around and head back to my parking spot and park. So this guy tried to cause a car accident. At this point I took my stuff inside and put it away. Came back out and called the police to report the incident. They said they cannot identify a crime, but I can fill out a police report. While I am on the phone with the police this guy leaves that street giving me this bizarre deranged smile. I refuse to engage. I spent the next hour filling out the police report. In the process I find out he lives on that street a few houses down. I am nowhere near his house, but he seems to not like me parking on that street. This guy must have seen my car on that street before and decides to randomly road rage. I gave his name and address to the police. My intent to build a case file if he doesn't knock this shit off.
So now I gotta buy a fucking dash cam and put it in my car because of some nutjob plumber. I have nothing against plumbers, but this guy fits the definition of knuckle dragger. His name isn't even Mario or Luigi, bummer.
Another thing that might be related is that during the winter somebody dumped a ton of snow onto my car when it was parked there. It looked like it was on purpose. If this is the same guy this guy drove his snow plow 4 houses down. Definitely has mental problems.10 -
My manager asked me why would our server would get overloaded, after analysing the issue and giving him a technical analysis over the last N weeks.
So I used an analogy:
Imagine an empty tank. The water coming in comes through a giant hose where the output is like a tiny tap.
Then just now I was thinking how to explain the Node event loop... And thought of this analogy:
Imagine fireball Mario running around in a circular track throwing fireballs to the side as he runs.
Maybe not entirely true but got made me chuckle...
Does anyone else come up with these sorts of analogies to explain programming problems to "nonprogrammers"?8 -
20 years ago, in China, they sold a so-called learning-machine which is a modified version of super Nintendo with a full sized keyboard, you could use it to learn how to type, and play Nintendo games. somehow it supports basic, and the manual book have printed a full code to create a stupid game with you could move a super Mario character with arrows, me and my step brother spend a whole day typed the 40+pages of code and enjoyed the game for 5 mins. BTW you can not save your program. after that I think it is so cool to create vedio games by programming.

Last weak I tried to use Linux Arch on my VM. The only Linux distribution I'm used to is Ubuntu and the fist time I launched Arch I completely forgot that it was " do it yourself ". And that the ISO isn't actually a fancy installer like the Ubuntu one.
So I started following a guide and found out that the arch wiki is actually the way to go.
I searched for 1 hour how to change the keyboard to swiss-french which was actually pretty simple.
After that exhausting research that made me realise how ignorant I am with UNIX universe, I finally tried to install the thing.
When I was done installing, it didn't want to boot after I restarted. I got stuck at the 'Booting...' screen. After a few tries I lost all my energy and motivation.
Tl;dr: Tried Arch Linux, realised I had no idea, gave up after a few tries4 -
Is there anyone who used to Play bit Games like BM, Alladin, Prince of Persia (The Old One), Mario, etc... And still would love to play those versions only, fuck the good graphics, those were awesome games3

My best friend's ex is really cool. But while they were dating, I was a bit frustrated, mainly because he was interested in many things she wasn't.
One thing that annoyed me was that his major is computer science, and her major is medical research.

I remember when I was child spent a los of time playing Mario. I think I started to code cause my love to videogames.9

God, playing SoulSilver has made me remember an era (or two, but I wasn't alive for one and the other was my childhood) where games were actually fucking *GOOD.* Some games can be absolute home runs now on rare occasion, but if I name consoles from these periods, you can INSTANTLY tell me at least one game that is pretty universally regarded as a best-ever.
Examples and predicted responses:
-Gamecube: Too fucking many to even count. Instant answers vary immensely, but everyone who's played games on this thing have one.
-Original Xbox: Halo 2 is the one instantly on one's lips, or maybe CE for some. Also JSRF.
-Dreamcast: SA2 or Phantasy Star or JSR or...
-PS1/2: Resident Evil, Spyro, Final Fantasy, Ratchet & Clank...
-PS3: Lara Croft games, Uncharted, Infamous... (this one's right on the border, it seems)
-NES: The fucking birthplace of modernized gaming.
-Genesis: Sonic games, obviously. Some may answer with arcade titles, too.
-SNES: Mario games. Mario Paint, SMW, SMW2, SMAS, a couple like Super Metroid or Kirby's Dreamland or F-Zero may come up too.
-N64: Banjo Kazooie, F-Zero GX, Waveracer, 1080, Zelda games...
-Gameboy (all systems:) Pokemon is the instant answer.
Now, a harder one:
-Wii U? Maybe one of the Mii game things? U-less games? Not many people remember the games for this system.
-Xbox One? Halo 5, pretty much. You probably played everything else on PC.
-PS4? The PS3 lineup, but without any soul? You played pretty much everything here on PC, too.
Is there a point to this rant? Yes. Kind of.
Games used to be great, not just due to better hardware, but due to people putting some goddamn heart and soul into making games, and due to creativity stemming from working on such limited hardware. It seems the more powerful consoles (and PCs!) get, the more gaming becomes a soulless cash grab to drain cash from wallets on subpar products with paywalls every 20 feet you have to clear to get the "full experience." Gaming has become less about letting people have fun and being creative with games and more about the bottom dollar, whether that be through making games as fast and as cheap as possible with as much paid content dumped on top as possible, or the systematic erasure of archival efforts to preserve gaming history. From what I read here on devRant, that seems to be the moral of anything computer-related as well. Computers are made to slow down and fail far faster than normal via OEM bloat and shitty OSes, and are used to constantly empty one's wallets with constant licensing fees and free trials and deliberate consumer ignorance. None of it's about having fun anymore. Fun seems to no longer have a place in computing at all.
If you take anything from any of the madman-esque loosely-structured rambling i'm saying here, make it that "the enemy of creativity is the abscense of limitations... and the presence of greed." Another message i'd like to leave you with is "start having fun when making things whenever possible, as it improves not just the dev process, but user experience, too." You can't always apply this, and sometimes you can never do so, but always keep it in mind.14 -
Super Mario Odyssey neatly captures Mario’s archetype.
In this game, Bowser kidnapped Peach because he wanted to marry her. The whole game revolves around this idea.
In the end, Mario shows empathy towards Bowser when Peach says “no” to him.
Mario wasn’t saving Peach to marry her. He did it because he’s a hero. That’s his archetype.3 -
When asking for a raise, how do you guys know, how much to ask for / how much are you worth?
I've been working as a programmer for the last year and a half, and it's my first real gig in the sector. Without getting into much details, I've currently the opportunity to ask for a raise, but I don't know what would be an appropriate amount or how to research or calculate it.
Any input would be very much appreciated.3 -
They added Fail Mode to Super Mario Odyssey — a set of ridiculously hard maps where you’re expected to fall down, but your gameplay is recorded, and in-game NPCs laugh at you. But, if you jump really far using boosters from Mario Kart, you can end up in rock climbing mode. When you reach the end, you get to a half-oasis, half-purgatory where there is a poker table, and other NPCs greet you.
There are a lot of chips, but they mean nothing — you got to invent your own rules. Among those chips, I found a surf green-colored micro SD card. I put it into my Switch, and the whole new game opened: a hybrid of Mario and Subway Surfers where I’m being chased by half-Peach, half-Thomas the Tank Engine.
When we reached the end, we lost our furry friend. But he was hiding in a dresser drawer, with a sex doll. Not an inflatable one, mind you, and not a silicone one either: the material resembled that of Barbie dolls.
She was a human-size, pretty Caucasian girl. I talked to her. Yes, she could talk, and the voice wasn’t robotic — she was definitely alive. Despite being a completely empty shell, she was conscious, albeit very dumb.
Her name was Near. This is the joke she told me:
— Knock-knock.
— Who’s there?
— Andy.
— Andy who?
— Andy who was imprisoned for sexual assault five years ago, duh! -
Fuck Threads and fuck multithreading in general.
I've spent the last 2 hours and a half looking for an important error that did my project not work at first execution, and it was all because I did start a side Thread, but forgot to wait until it was done before showing the output of it.
Fucking multithreading...3 -
I started working with Luigi, the workflow manager for a data-science project. Any input on how to test the Tasks or how does it compare to Airflow?

☀️ HI 👋 FELLOW 🙌 DEVS 😇
I was just wondering if anyone happens to know the guy who's kinda famous in the dev world who does the presentation on next-level/out of the box programming where one of the examples is a mario like game, and he basically simulates all the gravity and jump options and has a ghost appear behind the character so that he can place the platform the most effectively.. etc..
I saw it ages ago but I can't find it anymore!!!!! Don't think it was a ted talk but maybe.
Btw, Raycast is fucking incredible, especially the emoji extension + hyperkey!!!! 🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯🥳💯4 -

My fellow Linux Gamers, how do you DO IT?? I mean, my laptop is not some beast (it was 5 years ago, but now is old and tired) but it was able to run (not the smoothies way possible) games like Dishonored 2 on windows, but now that i am full-time Ubuntu user and i am stuck to minimal games i ask myself:
HOW DO YOU RUN SOMETHING POST-MARIO ON THIS SHIT?? i even tried wine with play on linux and even Gothic 1 runs like a slug..
Please, help a fellow gamer and linux enthusiast to understand where to look for a more performant experience 😔12 -
I was probably 5 or so.
This was during the time when i heard that dial up modem sound from my dad's "computer room" every night when i went to bed.
The computer had a huge CRT monitor which made that annoying high pitch noise but i loved playing with it so much i didn't mind.
My dad installed a Croatian knock off version of Super Mario from a floppy disk he got from a magazine (i still have it lol).
Every time you died you'd have to start the game again by typing "mario" in CMD. Me and my sister played it so much we became pros.
He also tried explaining how he codes in Turbo C but i guess i was too young to understand it. -
school got to try a old win 3.1 computer played around with paint drawing mario...
then we got a computer at home and i got Delphi with a computer magazine around age 14 and I've been coding ever since :p -
Skip to last block for actual question, everything else is about what i see and dont understand.
Machine learning and artificial intelligence is very interesting to me, ive watched a few videos but i cant manage to wrap my mind around it.
I see a few people starting out with projects that appear to be an easy start, but i of course have no idea, were they make a self-driving car in GTA (crashes alot, but still) or teach the program to complete levels in a game (snake, mario, run forrest)
I watched a few videos on Jabrils youtube channel that seemed to make alot of sense, until one point..
How does the AI know when it hit a wall?
How does it know where the walls are?
How does it measure the distance? How does it know when it has respawned?
I find it really, really confusing.
Can anyone of you geniuses suggest me anything to get into this? Id prefer if the goal was to make an AI using machine learning, that can complete some basic game, like in Jabrils videos.2 -
I think i was like 7 or 8 yo. When school vacation started, my mom joined me in this computer centre near her workplace.
I belive it was a Windows 95 system powered probably by Pentium 2 and i remember playing Aladdin, mario and a fun racing car game.
I remember i liked a lady teacher there and being scared of the male teacher from whom I learned about basic computer peripheral terms like CPU, floppy disc drive etc. -
My first interaction with Computers started in 1996/1997 and it was Dangerous Dave, PacMan, Mario, Pre that pulled me in so deep. We had multiple Floppy Disks and each of them used to go awry after a few months of use. Had to keep deleting stuff to fit all my Favourite Games
A year later I learnt the basics of MS-DOS and GWBasic. Looking at seniors do C Programming on Borland Turbo made me feel scared and one of them said it is the real language to make Games, and all types of Animation stuff. I was very intrigued but only for a while. I kept playing Games which was what I was fit for at that time -
My first day at my first job.
I am super hyped. Now I like be like Mario under a hidden infinite coin's brick, siphoning knowledge from better than me.
First project meeting :
- (CTO) OK, Lets copy paste everything needed from our last project and tomorrow we start development
And this is how we created a new project in ancient toolset2 -
One of the few video games that may claim to reflect changes in common sense through generations and decades is Super Mario , which you have surely heard of. Most people have heard of Mario, the Italian plumber who always appears to be dressed in a jumpsuit. Now, anyone can play it for free on a PC online.2
