For regular daily stuff I use VS Code and it is incredible imo, for big backend PHP projects that come in from time to time I switch over to PhpStorm and for big React / Native projects or projects that contain multiple js frameworks I've been using WebStorm and I haven't been disappointed at all.

I got introduced to the latter two at a company I used to work for and I'm still using them!

Has anyone else encountered this issue with installing a distro before?

So my colleague has installed Elementary OS 5.0 and he recommended me to do the same (on my personal dual boot laptop). However after the installation it doesn't reboot after clicking the button, and when I turn my laptop off and on again I get the grub as I should, choose elementary, I get the login screen all fine. But after logging in I only get the wallpaper and my cursor. I can't even open a terminal...

I've searched my ass off and everyone is saying to wait around 5 minutes before everything shows up after which you get to install graphic drivers. I've tried that but nothing happened so I just left it for the night hoping I could at least open a terminal in the morning, but there is still only the wallpaper and cursor.

I've tried pretty much anything at this point but I just can't get it to function. Is there anyone that has had such an issue before that could share a solution?

Man... I hate refactoring. After I had finished up an issue this morning, I had to refactor old sql queries and the parsing to the views.

I've worked on it all day and I still haven't finished! Still loving my job, tasks like these are unavoidable but they drain the life out of me.

Building one or more online services that will require little maintenance and that will generate a good income. Got to stop "working" one day and own all of my time 🤑

Just got a job as a junior PHP dev. Company is really chill as long as the work gets done. I can learn a lot here, and I am doing backend stuff mostly.

Got a great PC with 2 big screens and Ubuntu freshly installed by me.

Forgot all about the swag store. I'm already a ++supporter but I've never ordered anything of the store. So today I've ordered a PHP duck, a separate linux cape and a stress ball (already got the free stickers).

A client asked me to design flyers for him, at first I was hesitant since this would be a stand alone design task instead of one incorporated with development.

He kept asking since he liked what I designed for my other clients (logos, etc..) So I finally said yes and we agreed to a final preview before he would pay me. I had asked him for color schemes, certain pictures, info, etc. but he told me it was completely up to me.

I finished the design, sent him the preview and he told me it was shit compared to my other work and that he didn't want it anymore 😅. I used to get mad as fuck every time this happened but now I don't even bother .

I know many people are going to say "You should have had him sign a contract, bla bla". I know, I know, but you can't let people sign a contract for every small thing, it completely depend on the situation and I prefer to know which of my lesser known clients are assholes so I can quit accepting tasks from them. This saves me much more time in the end.

I hate it when companies got 5 payment options while 4 of them basically lead to a credit card payment.

I'm renting some servers from Vultr and they recently changed something in their payment protocol. Now you need a credit card, even while paying with PayPal, and I don't have a credit card. Using their BTC option doesn't work either since my wallet tells me they are using an incompatible payment protocol (error reason, address & amount) . There is not even a wallet address shown through their BTC checkout to which I could directly send the amount to. You need to open the website on the device your wallet is stored on and then make the payment (so no address is required from their side). Account management is taking a look at it now, I got very quick replies back from their support but this is the first time I'm having such an issue with them.

Oh well, hope they won't take down my servers in the meantime.

I just switched to Linux Mint with a KDE desktop environment on my laptop since a friend recommended it and I'm loving it so far!

Edit: was previously using manjaro, I am equally loving both as of now.

As a freelancer I get side requests from bigger development companies from time to time that don't have the time or capacity to deal with it themselves.

So usually the employees are pretty friendly but they do not like to read any of the documentation I send with the code. They call me up with stupid questions that are usually answered in the documentation.

I had sent them everything they had requested last Thursday so they called me on Friday to ask the usual stupid question. However, this time I had beforehand decided to have some fun! I told them I had to leave for the weekend and to call me back on Monday. Of course they called me during the weekend, but I didn't answer. So they called me today.

What I had done before handing it all in was I had named the methods that I wrote illogically, while stating and explaining the whole situation in the documentation extra clearly.

So I answered the call today and the first thing they did was apologize. Since I didn't answer their calls during the weekend they finally realized that the best way to go is reading the documentation instead of calling me all the time. They were freaked out at first because they thought there was something completely wrong with the code and they had to tell their client that the deadline had to be pushed back.

We are all good now :)

There are a couple really bad things I've seen other devs do.

One of those things is taking on managerial tasks while they are a dev in heart. Slowly kills them from the inside.

When your last test is finally over and everything works.

You can't keep wasting your time on people who do not know what the fuck they want. You could be way more time efficient with serious clients.

Client: Why did it take you two weeks in the end? You said it would take you a couple days.

Me: Because you told me to use my imagination on half of the tasks and you kept wanting me to change what I had created, thus unnecessarily doubling the time it should have taken. Besides that probably the unclear communication and the fact that you rarely called me back after you told me to call you.

Client: So if I tell you, exactly, how I want it next time you'll be able to do it in a couple days?

Me: I'm not sure, that depends on what you want. Tell me, exactly, what you want.

Client: Oh it's not much, I'll let you do your thing for the most.

Me: I can't handle another request, sorry. *Ends call*

At night is when my creativity starts flowing like a motherfucker. The moment when all the tasks are done for the day and you can start working on your own projects and just lay back and smoke (or drink, whichever you prefer) and zone the fuck out with some good music. Oh and if I've gotten a good work out in that day, then there's no stopping me.

I had no plans to even create an admin panel for my own small project but last night I made one just to make it look professional. After that, I got an idea for a separate project which I started working on. I usually write my ideas down so that I don't get into a complete project cluster fuck with 50 half completed projects, but sometimes you get that golden one that you have to start (currently those are the only two unfinished projects I got).

I've learned A TON creating my own very basic PHP framework. I'm using it for basic personal small projects (login system, simple functionality) and I'm loving it. The customization makes specific repetitive tasks so much easier.

Don't get it twisted, I use Laravel and Symfony much more (and Javascript) but I would definitely recommend anyone to do it just for the learning experience.

Two years ago my laptop crashed and wouldn't boot windows anymore. Luckily I had already handed in all small projects and backed up the rest. However, I still had to install all my programs on a fresh new windows installation.

I decided to give Linux a try since it was an old laptop and I have to say that my data loss situation was not bad at all but getting into solving Linux errors can take quite some time out of your day, especially in the beginning. After a week of spending time here and there to improve the situation I had pretty much everything setup to the point where I could start development again. I have to say that it has changed my workflow and that I'm loving Linux now. I started out with Ubuntu and now I'm trying out some other distros on my second laptop (if you got any suggestions please let me know).

I still use windows side by side with Linux for certain tasks, but I'm not regretting losing my windows installation on my laptop. It made me realize that there's much more out there to learn and to give a try.

When I click on more on the bottom right of this app and then on settings, after I scroll down and want to scroll up again I can't go all the way up to the point where I started. My profile image doesn't get shown anymore, is this a bug?

Worked on two (small) errors for about half my day. I've had them before but fuck I've never spend more than an hour on one. Decided to stop and go for a walk and game a bit after.

Came back today and instead of opening my code in VS Code I opened it in ST3 and I went through the errors again and I fixed it. I tried doing the same on VS Code but it didn't work just like yesterday.

Now, I've only had posititve experiences with VS Code and I really like, but what the actual fuck. Has anyone experienced this before and are there solutions or ways to prevent this? What is the cause anyway?

Also would appreciate some suggestions for code editors, love ST3 but I wanna try something new (I know, if it ain't broke don't fix it, got me)

Everytime they force me to add and test stupid features. I usually end up making my own version, which they dump almost every time.

Still not sure about this new guy, not trying to be rude but everytime we're talking about code he says shit that makes me wonder how he got hired. (btw he is hanging with the IT department all the time) He's a very nice guy, but talks massive shit when it comes to bugs/new features/etc.

Should I have a look at his pc to see what he's doing when in office or is it none of my business. Help me out here, I'm really curious but don't care if he's a fake at the same time lol.
