So. My grandma (280 km away) gave me a call.
Grandma: "Hiii. I have a problem with my PC."
Me thinking "ok. Just an ordinary tech support call from granny..."
Me: "Ok. What's the issue?"
Grandma: "Windows tells me there is no space left on drive F, non-stop"
Me: "As far as I know there is no drive F on your PC"
Grandma: "Would you be so kind to have a look?"
I agreed to log on via team viewer.
To cut an already long story short, there was this April Update which sent a bug all around the globe.
This bug exposed an internal drive Windows uses to do its Windows stuff - whatever it is.
Regularly these kind of drives are hidden from users eyes...
I finally solved it by applying a rollback on Windows.
The update is gone and with the next update there will be a fix from May to hide this drives again.
Microsoft!
I do you scare grandparents all around the globe?!??12 -

Fuck Twitter.
I get sucked in for 10 minutes through some news article, and my blood is boiling.
I think the platform does not even deserve to exist.
And I didn't think I would ever say that.
I used to be a staunch defender of the free & open internet, even with it's ugly and extreme sides, because I was convinced the good would outshine the evil.
I displayed the Pirate flag with pride on the mast outside of my house, I was intimately involved in the founding of their political party in my country. I was convinced of the power of the internet, I believed it would empower democracy and debate.
So why do simple tweets, even just the ones about technology, incite an endless stream of vile ultranationalist & misogynist hate?
How is it that those who are reasonable get drowned out?
That fucking character limit is a cancer.
The orator's wings are clipped. The richness of language is wilting before our eyes. All that remains are a bunch of caged chickens pecking every argument to death.
I will defend the right to free speech, even when it comes to the most disagreeable and controversial opinions.
But Twitter does not promote free speech. It's poison to free speech.
It's an endless torrent of non sequiturs, which constricts all reason and intellect. It replaces free speech by pretending to have equal value.
I really don't care if you are left or right, socialist or libertarian, globalist or nationalist.
You can argue to me that we should close all borders for immigrants, that Apple makes great products, that genocide has its pros, you could try to convince me that Heineken tastes acceptable (sorry AlexDeLarge), that Linux should be outlawed or that we should really try to bring this Eugenics thing back again.
Just be fucking rational -- and "Rationality implies the conformity of one's beliefs with one's reasons to believe"
You can NOT fit both your beliefs and their supporting reasons in 140 or even 280 characters.
So what's left is just your beliefs.
Stripped of all reason.
Repeat it often enough, keep spewing, keep throwing out incomplete arguments, and you'll train yourself to forego ratio in your convictions completely.
All social platforms should get a forced captcha for every spelling/grammar error, and a 1000 character minimum.
The world would be a slightly better place.6 -
MARKETING IS A MENACE FOR SOCIETY and a large waste of time and resources.
Imagine that for some very stupid reason people were allowed to steal cell phones from unsuspecting victims and sell it on open market legally, tax invoices and all.
One could create a business like this. Steal some lad's brand new $600 iPhone and sell it for $280, because why not?
That is marketing. A company goes and makes a phone for lets say $180. Add in taxes, shipping and development costs, and we get to $300. Put some real nice profits on top (let's say 40%) and we get to $420.
The last 180 are the cost of marketing for society.
Today some stupid marketing conmen goosesteps into my lab and says that we must use Tensorflow and in-memory databases and multicloud redundancy and, I kid you not, "profound learning".
WE HAVE A FREAKING LOGISTICS OPS APPLICATION.
"We are putting it on the brochure, those technologies are set to sell well in our core market, and improve employer-branding" says the conmen.
A request for a feature is one thing, a request for an whole other technology because some snake-oil salesmen read the term in some clickbait rag and thinks that some starry-eyed moneyhead will pay extra because the brochure says "NOW WITH 2X MORE TECH!" is just an assault on society.6 -
Hi DevRanters!
I got this react gig earlier this year, its pay is $280/month ($70/week), its a relatively new startup yet to launch though. i was tasked with building landing page and dashboard for user and admin.
Since the company is about to launch, myself and the ceo had a talk concerning salary and he's proposing a salary lower than the one stated above.
Please for a relatively new startup how much do you think is ideal for salary?
What do I do if we couldn't reach an agreement?
Asking for a friend. Thanks.19 -
I Did NOT realise how fucking great I2C and an esp8266 can be, simply connect up a few sensors like BME 280 and a few others, implement the Adafruit IO capabillity, done. Fucking Amazing!

Me: Ok I'm not going to bother upgrading my PC, just going to use it and buy a whole new system later on...
PC: Yo' bro, remember when you had no clue at what you were doing and you didn't buy an 80 Plus certified PSU and used stock intel cooler? Yeah man you're going to need to replace both of these things, that'll be $280!
Of course this fucking happens, knew I should have waited till I actually knew what I was doing with PC hardware!5 -

Hey guys I need your help.
I have developed a snippet manager which currently is used by over 280 users from a lot of different countries on a daily base, which is very nice.
(For those wondering the app is called "SnipAway" just search on it on Google it will pop up)
But my main problem currently are the translations. I've created them using Google translator mostly for the languages I don't speak.
I would like to ask for some help from my fellow devRanters. I would need translators for the following languages:
Italian
Spanish
French
Russian
Japanese
Turkish
If you can help translating please comment so I can send you the translation file. The file is not very big so translating it should not take long.
Also if you speak another language that's not in the list above still comment i wouldn't mind to add the language to the app.
Thanks9 -
I think U and I should always be together like they are on the Qwerty keyboard. xD
But there's a distance of parallel lines between us. -
Running tests on Codeception. Upgraded 2.4.0 to 2.4.1 and 40 out of 280 tests fail. Apparently Yii2 module has been "refactored". Fine, upgrade to 2.4.2 that fixes the issues reported in 2.4.1 - another set of tests fail for different reasons. Digging deeper. Turns out the "refactoring" includes a very opinionated change of behaviour when components have some internal state. But if it's acceptable to pass testing framework module rewrite in a minor bugfix release - then fuck Codeception in general.

How Recovery Nerd Assists Me in Recovering Lost Ethereum Totaling $129,542 I never thought I would get back the $129,542 worth of Ethereum I lost to a Ponzi fraud, so I am writing my story with a great deal of relief and thankfulness. It was a catastrophic incident. After spending my hard-earned money on what I believed to be a genuine opportunity, I discovered it was actually a very well-veiled fraud. I felt helpless as the knowledge struck. I felt I would never see my money again after my attempts to get in touch with the scheme's managers were met with silence. Until I discovered Recovery Nerd. Recovery Nerd was suggested by a friend who clarified that they were an expert in blockchain recovery services. Desperate but skeptical, I made the decision to get in touch. I was greeted with professionalism and empathy as soon as I made contact. They promised to have the resources and know-how required to track down and retrieve my misplaced Ethereum. I was kept updated at every stage of the difficult procedure. To protect my money, they carefully monitored all blockchain transactions, located the wallets that were involved, and collaborated with the appropriate authorities. Their team's perseverance was unshakable, and their understanding of the crypto industry was clear. I was ecstatic to hear that my ETH had been restored after working for several days. I felt so much relief. The Recovery Nerd's team's tireless work made what appeared impossible feasible. I am really grateful to them for their assistance. They transformed a nightmare into a tale of perseverance and healing. I highly recommend Recovery Nerd if you ever find yourself in a similar circumstance. You may contact them via WhatsApp at + 6 (488) 893-280 or recoverynerd(@)mail(.)com. I wish you luck. In the confusing world of cryptocurrencies, they are genuinely a ray of hope.3
