FUCK NO!!! I've got NewPipe and youtube-dl for that!!! The latter even combines nicely with my BlackPlayer EX!!!

Open source is amazing. The ability to just say no to those profiteering gluttons because you already have what they're offering as a "premium feature". Fucking awesome!

I'm only two step far from having an intelligent house, just missing finish my own domotic system and then a bot to control, music, TV, and electricity.

Let's do the list:

1.- Kodi on TV ✔

2.- MPD on a hidden PC inside my old grandpa's stereo ✔

3.- a small data server to provide music, movies and series to Kodi and mpd ✔

(This is something that im trying to do with spare PC's running Linux on my free time)

MPD on a PIII (500mhz + 512mb RAM)
Kodi on a dual core (2.80ghz +3gb RAM)
Server on a opteron (1.80ghz + 1.5gb RAM)

Heck yeah, I finally have a Raspberry Pi Zero. It's so cool and small and cheap and I'm gonna make so many groundbreaking things with it!

Got to know about OSMC/Kodi last week. Took out my Raspberry Pi. Setup OSMC over the weekend, did all the cable setup for 4 external hard drives and connected to TV via HDMI. After few configurations, I'm all setup. I'm astonished by all the features it provides. Fetching data from TMDb (I had actually created a javaFX app to do this for my local library just last month), remote control from Android as well Web Browser. Enabled UPnP and now I have my complete media center floating around my house network. It is one of the best open source project I have laid my eyes upon. Wish I could attach more pics.

I worked for a streaming company where I was interviewing a candidate for a device position. I tried digging into his passions and hobbies and he told me he was using rasp pi:s to automatically download torrents and stream to Kodi.

He really wasn't reading up on which company he applied for.

Simplest ways are the best - I've choosen Arch for my old computer which is meant to run Kodi. Works like a charm 😍

I just set up SSHFS so I can play my media library on my TV without moving all my data!

Basically my setup is something like this:

*Gaming PC (with a total of 10TiB - 6TiB being used for my /home) located in my office

*Home Media PC (with total of 150GB) located in my living room

Everything I have is on my 6TB HDD, and just my Videos folder is larger than the hard drive in the Home Media PC, so I decided to set up SSHFS. After about 15 minutes of reading man pages and trying different configurations, I ended up just needing "sshfs -o nonempty -o allow_other [user]@[location]:/home/$USER/Videos /home/server/Videos/"

One of the big ISP/entertainment companies dug up the roads a few months back and laid fibre optic cables (cutting through a power cable in the process but that's another story).

Recently had someone turn up at my door to chat about their services. All sounded very good, I took a card and gave it some thought and did some research.

So, it'd be a little cheaper than my current provider (FTTC setup). It'd be faster for downloads, slightly slower for uploads (I want fast upload). IPv6 is only on their business packages. I use IPv6 a lot. I also have several static IPv4 addresses.

It would involve getting a cable in to where my equipment rack is, and one to where the TV is (which I spent ages building a TV unit with power, network etc.)

To record/watch TV in another room with their service, I'd need to pay extra. The service just provides HD channels that I can already get, unless I pay more. At the moment I have MythTV handling all the recording of TV shows I want, and Kodi to play them back on different TVs, via CAT6 I spent ages installing into the walls.

Then there's the uncertainty of how nicely their equipment will play with my relatively complicated setup.

I decided, it isn't worth it really for me. I would have to change a load of stuff just to end up with what I already have... But with more limitations.

Anyway, the guy turned up again a few days later, I told him of my decision and away he went.

Since then I have been visited by 2 other employees of this company to try to sell me the service.

It is probably great and convenient if you are not like me and DIY all your home network and media distribution setup...

Also the ISP I'm with is quite small. They are very knowledgeable and friendly and I can get through to someone quickly if i phone. What I use meets my needs, so I prefer to support the smaller company in this case.

Hooking up a raspberry pi to the smart tv and installing LibreELEC(Kodi) on it, is the best thing I have ever for the family’s tv.
It even works with the smart tv remote:)

I am a web dev but recently I have a growing interest in robotics and computer engineering. Thus I bought a raspberry pi 3, installed raspbian and then kodi (for testing purposes) on it, kodi was a bit laggy, don't know what to do with it now. Will try to it as a home server, just like a digitalocean droplet. Better suggestions?

And all the other things (which seem to be just kodi with a different ui. All of them) claiming to be "tv box ready" with sentences like "let your smart tv look old": bro if I can't even install fucking netflix alongside youtube with a nice navigation (product native at best), need to use some kind of keyboard because you won't work with my paired aftv remote and get like 4 fps on a fucken raspberry pi.. my smart tv looks like it's from 2075.

I have too many geeky non-dev activities. I don't know which is the geekiest...

Built a server rack out of bits of spare wood (going to rebuild and improve it in future). Wired up the entire house with network cabling. Didn't need to, just prefer not to use WiFi for things where possible. Also ceiling mounted a PoE WiFi AP for things that have to use WiFi (e.g. smartphones).
DIY built a rack mountable Pi shelf with faceplate.
Configured a dedicated TV tuner/PVR PC used by Kodi running on Raspberry Pi for a couple of TVs (all diskless/network boot).
Got a colocated server running in a data centre for running various VMs on for different things. Run my own email, webserver, DNS, VPN, voice chat server, various other stuff.
Gradually getting into electronics, which overlaps with dev a bit.
Sometimes I play games. I built a dedicated VR PC which occupies the smallest room of the house.

Unsure which is the geekiest thing!

Setting up my HTPC allowed me to learn how to set up a nextcloud server. Time to start saying goodbye to Google!

Competition judges don't believe that a Google Assistant based system running on a Raspberry with recipes, ingredients, YouTube and Spotify streaming, Kodi streaming, lights control and other stuff, qualifies as an IoT project.
For them, it just equates to the number of sensors and ugly wires sticking out a Raspberry, with some 1-file Python program.

Thoughts on this?

Just trying to set up my girlfriends Kodi box and found this in the manual. It's running android KitKat too. I feel ill.

I am currently planning to purchase a small home server + media client (with Kodi).

A small Linux Distro running the Hometheateroftware Kodi will run on the media clients (Odroid C2). The control is then over an app over the local network. The database of Kodi should be on the server in the form of a MySQL database. The movies, pictures, music are also streamed by the server (max. 2 simultaneously) via SMB (simplest variant). In addition, the server is to be accessible to the outside via a web interface to act as a cloud (maybe nextcloud). The whole should be optimized for stability and longevity. In addition, a small GitLab CE instance will probably run on the server. Do you have any comments or objections? The fact that I only take 2x ne 2 TB hard drive has the simple reason that I currently have no need for more space. Sometimes it happens to me that I forget completely obvious things :D

I finally refactored my Kodi remote app (so many damn conditions and Promises). Tired but glad.

Kodi 17 feels buggy after update on Ubuntu 16.04.2. Anybody facing same issue?
