2 iPads
1 tv
1 computer
1 chrome cast
Still to come:
Pairing a phone to a new car
Fixing another tv.
Holidays are great! 🤐🔫6 -
I'm watching TV and I just heard something along the lines of "The files have been wiped from the server and there was no sign of a DDOS attack. Whoever erased those files had a backdoor.".13

Tv gold on NCIS: Los Angeles tonight.
Summarised:
Need access to laptop
Laptop has unhacksble security protocols
Laptop gets shot
Damage from being shot allowed them to hack it
Morale of the story. Bullets can damage code.7 -
I am the only guy who pauses to look at the code in every hacking/coding scene either in a movie or series? Coz that shit is sometimes hilarious9

Decided to work several days at home. Made my home working place comfy with TV as second monitor.11

see you in hell mac mini, the raspberry pi is taking your place connected to the tv.

On a french TV show:
Animator: So Jean-Pierre what do you do in life?
Jean-Pierre: well, I'm a computer ingineer
A: Oh, so you're the guy we call when the printer is fucked?
JP: Absolutely not, I'm the one who make programs and softwares that don't work, so they call us again
Literally me 😂1 -
Best computer/hacking/tech TV and movies?

me: I'm computer engineer.
people: Ah! You fix things then. Can you fix my TV?

(important details for this 'rant': people often put their tv on/in a piece of furniture that we (dutchies) often call a 'kast' (tv kast(je)) which translates to closet)
*at a birthday party, mate plugs a Chromecast into the tv and lays it in the tv 'closet'.
Me: that's definitely a Chromekast now!
Everyone: 😑

Today is finally the day of my hackathon, have been working with my team for about a month on a personal assistant already. I think we may stand a chance to get in the finals this year, unlike last year, when we started working only on the day of the hackathon.3

Moved out a few months ago. Love my setup. Dual monitor at desk and a big ass TV + laptop for when I want the couch. Coffee to top it off.20

I would love to see a “How It’s Made”-style TV show about software projects. With the narrator and everything.4

My university organised a series of shitty seminars and due to shortage of registration it was going to be made mandatory. Registration was a simple google form without sign in, so i wrote a python script and filled the google form with characters of Game of Thrones , Breaking bad and Narcos series. Now the seminar is cancelled.6

Back the mid 90s at secondary school, a friend came back from holiday with a Casio CMD-40 TV remote control watch. It was like magic, no one had never seen anything like it before.
We pranked our history teacher so badly, changing the channels, volume and turning the TV off while we were supposed to be watching some video on Henry VIII or something (no idea, too busy PMSL).
We'd pass the watch round the class to keep em guessing.
In the end, school replaced ALL the TVs and were seriously pissed off, to this day I believe they had no idea it was us!5 -
Storytime
A story about an Android TVbox which decided to become an iPad
Several years ago we've bought an android tv-box.
It served me and my family well for several years.
Specs are not that important in this story, but there they are:
Android 4.4
1GB RAM
Amlogic quadcore 1.4HGz
8GB memory.
This device served us well - online TV, browsing, music, file sharing and so on. But recently cheap Chinese memory deciteed to take a break and damaged ROM. Because of that device won't boot. The only option was to take it apart and "short circuit" certain legs on memory chip and make it boot from SD card and install new firmware. After such operations tv-box worked well again.
Hoverer, memory glitched again and again and this algorithm was repeated for several months.
But that is not what is this story about.
One day memory went completely crazy and there was no way to install new firmware on it. It just hanged on install. (BTW, it was official firmware for this device)
But after countless attempts it finally worked! It installed the firmware and booted into launcher and connected to WiFi!
But now comes the most interesting part.
It was not android anymore.
It decided to became an iPad.
My dad logged in to his Google account via tv-box and got mail that someboby connected from our IP via iPad (we don't have an iPad) and using safari browser! Stock browser is not safari browser.....
"Ok, nvm, crazy glitch." - we thought.
But preinstalled play marked wont launch. Because he told us, that we're trying to connect from iPad.
And Google chrome page suggested to download chrome for iPad
And everything was acting like it is an iPad.
OK, downloaded iTunes, why not??? ._.
Tried to install elixir for android via apk from flash, but then memory glitched one more time, everything went black and tv-box had damaged ROM again...
After that we decided to not torment it anymore...
That's it. Poor Android TVbox that all his life dreamed to become an iPad. Rest in peace.2 -
My PlayStation 1 has never needed an update, but these days, everything comes with an updater. Like, "oh, boy, my TV needs to update again". There's something wrong.50

I stayed at a hotel called "Crowne Royal Plaza" for a work event in Denver. The TV in the room was a nice new '50 Samsung. Much to my dismay I discovered they had disabled the ability to change the input to HDMI. I called the front desk to compain and the pesent who answered the phone had the nerve to tell me that feature had been disabled because it was "illegal". I laughed histarically and explained the reason was actually to try and force customers to buy shitty pay-per-view content, to which he replied, "Probably".
We must put an end to such blantant disregard for hardware and software freedom. This is beyond uneccaptable. I am completely and utterly disgusted by such slimy business practices.
To the management of the Crowne Royal Plaza, from the bottom of my heart, fuck you and burn in the deapest, darkest part of hell, you scum sucking dick fucks!5 -
Why the fuck do all (smart) TVs have such a shitty UI/UX? I don't really use TVs and I was shocked when I tried one. Apparently it's a thing, it's not just that one I tired...4

For those who have seen "Mr Robot" (if not just GO), we agree, terminals contents are just amazing 😮
Best TV show of all time ♥️13 -

Just got a new TV, 4K... it’s one of those smart ones, by Samsung.
Anyone want to explain what the fuck “McAfee Security for TV” is, and why the fuck it is necessary!?
What kind, of absolute waster madman goes “I know what I’ma do today, write a virus for a tv”!?
Take that shit elsewhere McAfee.
Now accepting any links to known Smart TV 0-days and attacks...
And I had to sign in to 5 different fucking accounts to get to the fucking tv.
The world is broke as fuck. Roll on the apocalypse.35 -

There's this TV show called Startup. The protagonist "hacker" tells a guy to go learn JavaScript. And then they show him learning Java. If noobs make this mistake, I get it. But a TV show that's featuring a "hacker" who can create crypto currency and dark web sites? WTF?6
-
Thought Amazon servers went bonkers seeing these names. Later realized these are episode names for TV series, Mr Robot.

If you haven't seen silicon valley... Do... For the love of God do.
And if you don't like it one... We will never get on, it's god damn hilarious ... Constantly

How I feel when my family says "Sure you can fix the TV! if you can make a video game, this shouldn't be a problem."1

I love this database primarily because it is cross platform and can be easily understood by anyone unlike SQL database files.5
-
Am I the only one who can't take the IT nonsense in TV SERIES (especially crime series) anymore? ANY UI shown on an arbitrary screen looks like garbage! And in addition to the f*cked up screen designs, every damn action of course makes weird beep noises, which would be totally annoying after like 3 secs IRL. How the heck are we supposed to take such BS seriously? This totally destroys so many TV series for me!
(Also, I have to explain to my wife why I'm laughing all the time! :p)10 -
Sometimes I want to slap myself.
I’ve been making progress with my voice activated TV remote project - coz you got to use a Google Home and a Raspberry pi for something right? Right??
Anyway, when the API you have written suddenly stops working and you’ve spent hours trying to solve it, it is really soul crushing when you realise you’re using a class variable incorrectly
I’ll just go cry now, while I control my tv 😥😎
Class TVAPI{
Private $tvIP = “192.xxx”;
Private $args = $this->decodeArgs($_GET);
Function of tvVolume(){
exec(“python tvRemote.py {$tvIP} {$this->args}”);
}
}2 -
Coolest thing I’ve built solo?
Damn, there’s been a lot of things over the years, but I guess the most used one I’ve made would be my voice activated tv remote - yes it’s real.
So in essence it’s a google home... yea I know spyware and all, but look it was free so I’m going to make use of it... err where was I, oh yea.
An IFTTT account which taps into the google assistant API and creates a webhook, although the authentication side of things is 0 to none, so had to put a api-key into the requests to at least have some layer of auth.
This webhook then hits a raspberry pi containing a PHP API to accept and authenticate the request in, digest this into KEY commands for the TV, and drops this into a Python script to connect to the TV over a web socket connection ( I found python more stable for this ) and sends the pre made key requests, it can even do multiple keys at a time... that was a pain.
So after all that, the end game becomes about a second from saying “hey google, change the tv channel to xxx”
This sick and twisted contraption is finished and the tv is my little bitch.
This has been built out to handle channels by name, number, volume up/down, sources switching to hdmi, tv, vga and a bunch of other things.
The things we do when we can’t find a tv remote for days....
Next up, getting it to launch Netflix app and going to a specified show / episode.. but may be to adventurous. -
The Penguin's den 😅

Monitors are a full HD TV and a 12 years old 5:4 for legacy stuff.5 -
Anyone else's blood boil when TV shows abuse tech terminology? Like the 'hacker' saying "connecting the virtual TCP to the neural net."14

All employee meeting, tv has no volume.
Guess who gets passed the remote to figure out why there is no sound...1 -

That moment when a new client asks for help with their iPad and you ask them what model it is. "It's an Insignia brand iPad," they say proudly.
Let that sink in. It's a few layers.
Then they want you to set up 2 laptops, a TV and this unknown tablet so that they can talk to each other, with an as-on-tv fake diamond ring as payment.
Let that sink in.
If you want me, I'll be hiding under the couch.2 -

When tv series/movies have "coding scenes" and they do impossible things within seconds. (I'm watching last season of the 100... My god...)12

Just watched the first season of Silicon Valley and I have to admit: it's the best series out there. Is the second season as great as the first one?6

Applied to a Jr. Dev job and was hired as a Digital Marketer — I can deal with this, I’m AdWords & Analytics certified. What I can’t abide is that I spent the last year working my ass off learning to code and the person next to me with the Jr. Dev position only uses DIVI and has zero inclination to study, learn or write basic HTML & CSS—much less PHP. I’m not an expert by any means but I love programming, I love the problem solving, the challenges and the culture of it all. So far, and these are only two examples, I’ve shown him how to use the target attribute to open a page as a new tab, and how to register a nav in the functions.php file to create a menu but he is unwilling to even attempt it. Rather, he told me that I was too technical and that no one would be using code in this day and age.
For the record, I think DIVI is a cool platform, it’s clear that my boss knows nothing about code to be fair and I love my job— this is my only issue so far😂 I just needed to rant.5 -
Silicon valley should have more episodes in a season😟. Who feels the same?
P.S. - T.J. Miller will be missed🙁4 -
I just realized a Samsung, Google, Apple smartphone now costs more than a 55in UltraHD 4K smart TV....9

Watching a piece (a Belgian TV series) about hackers
- Police IT dpt takes a burned down computer (literally burned down -- black from the smoke), plug it into the mains and remove a graphics card. To collect evidence from.
- A policeman from IT dpt is browsing some company's website (while at the police station), looking at their clients. Address bar says: 127.0.0.1.
- The police hacker is browsing some forum. She got the post author's IP and MAC addresses from that forum post metainfo.

The next month, I saw on a job post that they're looking for that X role.

So my school's wifi doesn't support my TV or something, all I know is the wifi doesn't appear as a potential connection for the TV. (Even then, when I plugged the TV into the Ethernet cable, it still gave me an error message.) Well I figured out a loophole Saturday night.
I plug the Ethernet cable into my laptop. Then activate the hotspot on my laptop. Connect to the TV through the laptop's connection. Problem solved.
Loopholes are one of the best parts of life.1 -

To build a machine as shown in 'Person of interest'.
P.S. If you are hearing Person of Interest for the first time, put it on top of your tv series watchlist. You will not regret it.6 -
Is it just me or has german tv become more and more ad-ridden? A few years ago it was considered a dick move to play a single ad during an episode.
Now some channels continue the tv program but make it smaller so they can show an ad on the sides. And whenever i switch to the most popular channels i get an overlay that is basically an ad too.
I switched to livestreams and web-based tv for a reason, and that's because tv ads get more intrusive with every year. And don't get me started on the bullshit that smart tv's do nowadays, by that i mean sending data home.
I can't wait for tv to die out or to be replaced by an ip-based protocol just like telephones did.6 -

whenever i tell my dad about a technology that is going way beyond our imagination and tell him about the consequences of it and how we should worry about that

Halt and Catch Fire is having another great season. Lived those days and it is so true. CompuServe, Compaq, Commodore, 5 1/4", Tandy 1000, Byte Mag, Atari, The Well... The tech you see is really 1985ish. Attention to detail is appreciated by long time technologists.
H&CF is about building a tech business and much applies to today's startups. That two brilliant tech women are leading the charge adds to it. All the characters are great Cameron, Gordon, Donna, the devs at Mutiny and Joe channeling Jobs (in my opinion) is spot on.
Any H&CF fans have an opinion?4 -

I finally found something to rant about! So what happened is that I am participating in the Digital Ocean competition (I need to do 5PR's). So I find a report with a lot of scripts. I decide to contribute and write a discord webhook API (send messages through a webhook). The next day, the guy goes "No thanks :)" and closes the PR. Words cannot express how triggered I am. I ask him if I can make anything else out of exasperation (I did not intend to do anything for him anymore, I can't explain why I did that), he tells me no...

I've been watching that "Mr Robot" lately, and its warped my sensibilities. Now, whenever I see something ridiculous, like "I've got the hard drive here" (holds up PSU), I'm irrationally angry and won't watch the rest of the show. I wish more producers would spend the time to build that sort of realism4

I "fight" with another developer at the end of a school project (a website).
The "other developer" complained because he had received a lower rating than mine.
He went to the teacher telling them that I had to lower the evaluation because during the project I watched TV series, And the teacher replied: there are those who can do it and some like you do not.
He could not do it because when he concentrated he could not do anything, you think when he lost himself in TV series.
There were various quarrels because I had this attitude but a higher rating (and anyway with a product a thousand times better than his), while he gave 100% he could not do anything.5 -
Well crap. The biggest movie and TV serial provider in Czech and Slovakia went down and i have no way of watching TV serials. So what do you use to watch TV serials ? Some site thats updated when new episode comes out would be amazing.

Does it now spy on me? Will it be painfully slow afterwards? How can I downgrade, if I don't like it? Seriously, those things cost a lot, and I don't want updates that bring the whole experience down to halt, just because they want me to buy a new one (eg Apple phones)
Seriously, screw you, LG -.-
Give me an option to just don't do the update, without bugging me every time I turn on the TV, or let me see a changelog. It's one of those two options.1 -
What kind of influence did American Series (like Big Bang, Simpsons etc) have on your image of America? Especially their technological progress.2

!Rant
Just spent almost an hour trying to figure out why my computer won't display on my tv monitor (because the best smart TV is a PC). I tried everything, unplugging the graphics card and using the motherboard, tried another tv, tried different sockets. Tried another graphics card etc.
Eventually, without notice, after plugging it to a regular PC monitor, it started working. No clue why. But it works now so I'm happy. -
I'm binge watching Person of Interest right now and I would like to know the community feels about it.
I feel that it is still futuristic and we aren't there yet. What do you think?1 -
Definitely Android 8.0 is neat.
And it's faster.
I think Android has developed a lot.
Isn't that right? -
If I get a nice capture/tuner card, do I need any other strong specs in its computer, other than RAM, to set up a myth box?

over the time "the mentalist" and "the big bang theory" was replaced by "breaking bad", "silicon valley" and "halt and catch fire", now they are replaced by "the profit", "shark tank" and "podcast". is this a beginning or change or an end????

I wanted to buy a 50 inch LCD 4K TV for my room to wall mount it in my room as third display for coding and monitoring.
I went to a TV store and already saw 4 people in a Queue waiting to buy a OLED TV for 3000 $.
Currently I dont understand, why a lot of people are hiped for OLED TV's.
For me a OLED on anything with a batterie is the better option, but not on a stationary monitor.
Sure OLED got the deeper black, but on a stationary Monitor you want the best colors and for that there's LCD.
But OLED TV's are selling triple the price of a LCD and people buy it like it's the best shit ever. WTF!1 -
My sister tell her boyfriend she's good at technology, he ask her to start the TV, my sister call me!

Just a quick question someone might be able to help with, I'm looking for an android tv box that is relatively up to date and going to be kept up to date for development.
Haven't been able to find anything on Google other than the NVIDIA shield or Xiaomi Mi box...5 -
Guess what I saw while channel surfing on tv. A Linux terminal Channel. There was no one doing anything to it, it was just there.1

2. Buying a big 40" TV and code on that25 -
Have anyone in Norway/Scandinavia ordered a devduck/apparel from the swag store and can tell me how long it did take? Want to order one, but not until at the start of next year.

I love this weekly group rant, it made me think back when my mom started to work in a kindergarten and she used to take me to work when i was 4-7 years old ('94 - '97).
There was this "TV" and all the kids used to smash the buttons on it. It also played sound, but there was always a lot of kids there so I was shy to ask them if I push the buttons too. But I was the teachers son, so I didn't had to sleep in the afternoon, and then I discovered this computer thing I was amazed, it was like nothing I saw before, you push it and it does what you pushed and, *_* this smiley is exactly me back then. It was probably an old commodore with green text on the black screen. It was the moment when I decided to get more information about this wonder.
In elementary school (around '98) we had this computer room and as I was one of the best students back then I was granted access to it. It was a huge success in a post communist country to get money for new computers to teach us kids to use them back then, so only the chosen ones could use them, and I was one of them, one of the best time time of my life, honestly. At this moment I knew for sure, I want one and when I grow up I gonna work with them. I had no idea what you can do with it but every adult is talking about how well paid are the people who use them at work. :D it sounds funny now
In '89 or '99 we visited our family in a town far away. My grandfathers sisters boyfriend had a computer and he said, look I also have internet. This face again *_* what the hell is internet. So he explained me this internet thing which "makes all computers connected, but you have to pay for it and it kinda works like wired phones you know. Here you put the address and you can open the website"
me: website, whoooa *_*
8-9 year old clever me: "but how do you know what are the addresses, do you have a phonebook for these addresses?"
he showed me google, and a slovak and czech search engine, I remember searching for "funny pictures" on the slovak search engine, because I was thinking If I search google, its english so he would pay too much :D
I didn't had a computer until I was 13 years old, but then I started to messing with Microsoft Front Page 2003, was amazed with the html and css generated by it and started to editing it.
Now Im a front end web dev -
I've been developing applications for Smart TV s from about a month. What a drag it is! Has anyone worked on developing for Tizen OS TV?2

I stumbled apon this software called vavoo.to, whith this you can watch Movies, Series, Live TV and more just started to reverse the apk.
Now out of curiosity how the fuck are they doing this with Live TV without hosting it themselves.
They also sell legally their own Android TV boxes with the pirated content from Switzerland. Why can they do this without being fucked from behind??
I will find it out eventually but this is interesting to reverse. -
I'm back !
Also with a question, what tv shows do you watch 🤔, silicon valley is a given , what about Mr robot?
But I find that alot of intelligent people hate big bang theory.25 -
Hey there Ranters,
So I am big film and video guy. I was wondering what good IT shows you guys watching. My all time favorite is The IT Crowd. Most recent show i am watching is Silicon Valley.
Any suggestions?12 -
Anyone got any show recommendations? a year for Game of Thrones is killer. I really enjoyed Mr Robot, it was dark, moody and pushed the lines. Vikings is great, I find historical shows really interested when executed right. Just started watching Marco Polo.14

What's the one movie/TV show that always gets you in a geeky project mood.

Tried to install MS-DOS 6.22. Was not fun at all. Tried 3 iso flashers in total. The closest that happened to DOS was unetbootin getting bootlooped on the 10 second countdown to automatic system start. I gave up on it eventually.

What are some good tv shows and or movies that are either directly related to the tech industry or at least scratch the surface? This could also include documentaries.
The more I get into learning to code the more I want to immerse myself into the culture of it all. Plus it helps inspire me to keep going on my journey which hasn't been easy so far.17 -
I watch TV shows and pretend like I am working in front of my parents. Is there any chance, I get a place in heaven?6

Any thoughts?3 -

Ola TV apk for Android Nowadays we’re not determined by the television of ours for entertainment as
we have many streaming apps in the marketplace, and each comes with little unique features.
This particular report is also approximately one streaming app that you’re merely going to love,
and that’s Ola TV APk. -
