Any Home Assistant fans out there? Got myself a RPi3 a few months ago and got hooked on HA, because of the huge product support and great community. Didn't find any dashboards that I liked so created my own, written in JS, fully customisable and support for most if not all kinds of gadgets. The purpose was to have something easy to use for the whole family, on a wall-mounted tablet. What do you guys think?
Anyways, has anyone done some cool home automations/scripting? Would love to hear about it!86 -
Every time I hear "if it's stupid but it works..."
NO Fucking No!!!
If you know that it's stupid you should fucking correct it!!!21 -

Finish my Raspberry Pi Zero Cluster... complete with kubernetes, etc.
... I still don't know what I'm going to run on this. suggestions in the comments welcome.29 -
It's done! Network printer and scanner, hosted by a Raspberry Pi Zero W. I used CUPS to host the printer, but the scanner was much more difficult. I installed apache2 on the Pi to host a HTML front-end that I wrote. Once you set up the scan, the front-end makes an AJAX call to a PHP script, which then calls my Python script that does the scanning and converting. Once that's done, it returns the file name via the AJAX call, then the front-end downloads the scanned PDF on the computer. I even managed to impress my girlfriend, who didn't really understand what I was doing until I showed her the end result 😄
I might try to pipe the output of the conversion straight back via AJAX, to be downloaded without a second call.10 -

Yep, thata right. Fuck Wordpress Raspberry Pi. Thanks to my inability to interact with proton mail filtering I just made a script that checks for a new email and if it contains words "wordpress", "help", " hack", "build" and it is not from whitelisted contact, the email is moved to the Fuckpress folder and automatic reply is sent back that I AM NOT FUCKING DOING YOUR GAYPRESS FUCKING SHIT FOR YOUR 5$ CUNT.
rant over6 -
This was typical for me:
Yesterday evening I was installing a webserver on my Raspberry Pi for experiments with WordPress. I began some days ago, but I had to stop because the downloads took at least to long.
So I started to logi in:
Username: Raspberry
Password: Pi
-> False Password
Wondering why it is not working a tried again. Same result. After some time I remembered that I changed my password.
Username: Raspberry
Password: Ih4G2tgY*
-> false password
*example
Tried again. Still false password. Then I remembered, that I used my another standard password.
Username: Raspberry
Password: U2gra94hY*
-> false password
After that I felt a mix of angry and helplessness. After some other failed attempts I gave up.
I formatted the SD-Card and installed Raspian again.I started my Pi
Username: Raspberry
Password: Pi
-> false password
My thought: WTF, why does this not work!!
This was the moment when I got the brainwave that the Username wasn't Raspberry, it's Pi.
Username: Pi
Password: Raspberry
-> access
Then I hated myself.9 -

One day my computer science teacher (we were working with Raspbery Pi) gave us the assignment to fill some areas with blocks in Minecraft PI using a Python script.
Me: Why did you use a while loop instead of a for loop?
He: What is a for loop?
From this moment the class was mostly held by me and it was actually quite a lot fun :).
I still am quite frustrated about the quality of german computer science classes.17 -

My boss needed me to run a quick PoC a Raspberry Pi (3B+) for him. Don't worry about imaging the SDC, he says. He will do it, he says.
I guess he had an old Raspbian image file sitting around in his downloads folder or something. Cause this this is seriously out of date.
`sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y`
....
....
....
168 packages need to be updated, need to fetch 600MB in archives.
Oh, look at that. It's not Lite, its the full version. So I gotta either sit here and purge all the unnecessary packages, or just wait as Wolfram updates.
So I watch some youtube, still updating.
I wash the dishes, still updating.
I take a coffee break, still updating.
Text the fiance, still upgrading.
Yes, even as I post this, it's still upgrading.
All the packages are downloaded at least, but they're still installing. And I'll probably need to reboot after since there are firmware/udev updates and my PoC requires USB + GPIO pins.
At this point, it would have been faster to just re-image the card.

In season 1 episode 4 of Mr.Robot, Elliott plans on using a Raspberry Pi to heat up the storage facility in order to destroy the cassette tapes stored there. My mum just came to me asking me why the mouse is not working ...like I'm GOD of electronics :( (I'm just a simple dev) I simply though that the battery is dead because it's old. Soooooo.....
I showed her how to open it and how to change the battery. After 5 min she came back with a new battery and the same mouse asking me to fix it for her....
In my mind I literally snapped my brain was bleeding and exploding at the same time.
I just cringed a fake smile and changed the battery in front of her very slowly. I sure she won't remember how to do it next time.

Just deployed version 0.0.1 of my holiday project to production.
It's a pie "attached" to some speakers, mounted below the kitchen cubord. So far it only runs a spotify connect on it and you're able to play music there while cooking/cleaning.
I'd actually like it to also be able to just play regular music, either from a smartphone or a computer in the network. (It's connected by wifi to our lan). Any advice on what software I could install on it to achive that? i'd prefere to enable it for devices on the lan and have bluetouth dissabled, but I'm actually not sure if that is even possible. So yeah any advice to that? Or any other things you'd install on it?
I know, that I need to do some "cable management" back there :P10 -
So I set up push notifications from my Raspberry Pi to my Android phone, to know when exim sent a mail locally.
The easy part was the actual push notifications.
The more tedious part turned out to be looking for a way to send a notification for each mail.
After some research, Procmail seemed to be the only fitting tool to pass info to a command (in order to give the push notification some content so I know what's up)
In the middle of everything, I managed to fuck up exim system-wide, so mails didn't work, which was fucking great of course...
The magic receipt is this:
:0 c
| ${NOTIFY} -t "Pi mail: $SUBJECT"
Anyway, this is the result (using a test mail by mdadm + an actual degraded array I am still waiting on replacement drives for):2 -

Gotta love Linux!
Wanted to install Arch on my Rasperry PI yesterday, but don't have a cardreader on my PC. Still had an SD with a different distro (RasPlex) lying around. Popped that in, connected power and ethernet only, looked up the default SSH credentials and got to a blinking terminal on my desktop PC.
Well, how am I gonna format my microSD? Rasplex comes without fdisk, and I booted it from the only microSD slot.
Well, here we go - Extracted arch to a usb thumb drive, chrooted into it, switched microSD cards, partitioned and formatted it from the USB-Arch, installed Arch on it, chrooted from Arch to Arch (😁), set up drivers, network and ssh access, rebooted to my why-the-hell-not distro.
Everything worked!3 -

Well, I'm still in 1981 Hell as far as serial connectivity goes, but we got boobs on the screen, because when we're working with DOS 5.00.2 BETA and 4 colors at a time, why the fuck not?

Network Security at it's best at my school.
So firstly our school has only one wifi AP in the whole building and you can only access Internet from there or their PCs which have just like the AP restricted internet with mc afee Webgateway even though they didn't even restrict shuting down computers remotely with shutdown -i.
The next stupid thing is cmd is disabled but powershell isn't and you can execute cmd commands with batch files.
But back to internet access: the proxy with Mcafee is permanently added in these PCs and you don't havs admin rights to change them.
Although this can be bypassed by basically everone because everyone knows one or two teacher accounts, its still restricted right.
So I thought I could try to get around. My first first few tries failed until I found out that they apparently have a mac adress wthitelist for their lan.
Then I just copied a mac adress of one of their ARM terminals pc and set up a raspberry pi with a mac change at startup.
Finally I got an Ip with normal DHCP and internet but port 80 was blocked in contrast to others like 443. So I set up an tcp openvpn server on port 443 elsewhere on a server to mimic ssl traffic.
Then I set up my raspberry pi to change mac, connect to this vpn at startup and provide a wifi ap with an own ip address range and internet over vpn.
As a little extra feature I also added a script for it to act as Spotify connect speaker.
So basically I now have a raspberry pi which I can plugin into power and Ethernet and an aux cable of the always-on-speakers in every room.
My own portable 10mbit/s unrestricted AP with spotify connect speaker.
Last but not least I learnt very many things about networks, vpns and so on while exploiting my schools security as a 16 year old.8 -

Code your own damn stuff!
I am building a RFID and button controlled music player for kids.
I am using a couple of different modules for that. The one for the input was really laggy. I thought it was so laggy because of the network delay. I tinkered with it a week but it didn't improved. So I just coded my own module which was much easier to do than I thought.
It was a really rewarding to code something yourself in less than a day instead of trying to get something working for a week. -

Me and my friend > trying to attach a touchscreen display module to raspberry pi.
The module has two rows of female pins like
: : : : : : : :
The pi (model: zero w) has two rows of male pins soldered to it.
One row is fine but another row is @ 90° angle to first one.
** Who the hell bent these pins **

Ya let's do it,
After connection,
So many wires, totally messy & ugly
But alas it works

More of a rave than a rant.
My Dad was having some trouble with a game disconnecting on the PS4 and he read somewhere that it might be a problem with our home router. I didn't think it would be, as every other game works fine. But there was no talking him out of it. And to be fair the current router WAS kind of old.
So I have a look at the one he's decided to buy and it's some massive triple-antenna beast for well over a hundred pounds. I felt like such a weapon might be overkill for 2 people in a house, but did say that it would definitely help with connection issues in some rooms and I kind of wanted to play with it.
So he got it and oh am I glad he did. It has so many fun toys, including a built in VPN. Right now I live abroad so there's a few services I used at home that I can't access, I was literally just considering buying a vpn the other day. I found this while setting up port-fortwarding for my Raspberry Pi to run a discord bot I'm building. I had condisered putting a VPN server on the Pi but this works too!
It also has built in DDNS from ASUS, which IS cool, but our IP hasn't changed in years so I'm not sure we'll need it. I set it up anyway just in case though!4 -
It seems that every Pi day, I end up with a new Raspberry Pi that I got sometime before it. First, a 1, then a 2+3, now I have a Zero as well. Next year, I'll have a cluster of 3s. No reason, just want to mess with it.1

to;dr: school, raspi, spoofing, public status screen, funny pictured.
So. At school we had these huge ass 2/3 TVs displaying some information such as which teacher is ill, which lessons won't take place and some school related news. Standard stuff.
They worked using a raspberry pi attached to the TV fetching a website over http every now and then.
Using nmap I discovered that these pi's were in the same network as the pupils devices: Sweeeet.
After trying some standard passwords at the ssh port and not succeeding I came up with something different: A spoofing attack.
I would relay all traffic from those pi's through my device, would replace all images with a trollface picture (I know I know) and flip all text upside down.
Chaos, annoyed faces and laughter.
It was beautiful.1 -
So our car is quite old. I'm going to be making a tachometer using Arduino. I'm aiming at making a centralized computer system using raspberry pi and arduino. For now focusing on getting tachometer working. Requires a little electrical knowledge which I'll hopefully learn through trials and errors. I got some brilliant ideas like Implementing emergency braking using camera and stuff but that's all mechanical so dunno bout that.4
-
So I got this shitty car of mine and a shitty radio, the radio stopped working, so what Im going to do is pop out the old radio and make a raspberry pi radio and media player for it.
Any suggestions or tips before I get started?3 -
Took the day and rebuilt my home network with no major issues along the way.
Migrated to a new NAS and gave a Raspberry Pi a new life as a PiHole + DHCP.
Rant: Why can't things always go this smoothly on my projects? 😎2 -
Finally made good use of my RPi and setup pi-hole on it. After a painful 4hour long dist-upgrade and picking the right filters it is working like a charm. Why didn't I make this work earlier.
I've also wrote a little script which queries the api and displays different info on the AMOLED screen that was lying around unused for some time.
In case you are interested (from left to right and bottom), the traffic in the last 10 minutes with the max value on a graph, the most active clients query and blocked ratio as lines relative to the top one, and an overview of the total queries/ blocked queries and total clients.
At least I've finally spent a weekend useful not just playing games and watching anime.5 -

So I decided today was a good day to manually compile python 3.6 for my raspberry pi as it hasn't yet been added to any supported repo's. Site says: this will take approximately 30 minutes.

!rant seems that my raspberry pi serial idea is a little bit complex at the moment and may take a more serious turn later, but I have studied and found DOS based TCP/IP software that will allow me to use my 5150 with actual Ethernet. There are a few 8bit ISA Ethernet cards that will work in the 5150 and separate executables that will configure DHCP, DNS, and even allow me to use a terminal emulator and SSH to connect to *nix based computers over lan! I'll keep you all posted!10

Frustration Rant!
Because old hardware means learning the hard way sometimes, I've had to purchase more goodies.
On my last update, I installed the rs232 shield which may have inadvertently been wired backwards for Tx/Rx from what im used to. I assume it is backwards to most db9 serial ports because most Arduino or other projects you would do with a pi have serial "in" connections like old routers and devices that would be "controlled" rather than the other way around. Anyway, according to a video on youtube showing a guy turning an old machine into an IRC client via raspberry pi, this shield may be swapped. That means that instead of interfacing with the old machine via a null modem crossover cable, I need a straight cable with male db9 on both ends. I unfortunately tried using the null modem crossover cable which was reversing the reversed pins all over again. I hope these next few days are more fruitful now that I've bought a straight cable and db9/25 adapter.
The good thing is that I managed to get the pi to recognize its new serial port. I also dusted off my DOS skills and my serial card in the 5150 seems to work.
I literally banged my head after nothing worked. Im hoping that the tx/ Rx is solved soon.
Oh and that AT to PS/2 adapter will allow me to use by IBM original Model M Keyboarf rather than the fun model F. -
Larking about with my Raspberry Pi again, wondering the near infinite possibilities that I can do with this.

Today I made some lights turn on and off with Gpio on my Rpi and some php, really happy and I'm going to work on it cause the landing site is really ugly. Would it be appropriate to add "mechanical engineer" and additional to web developer to my resume now? 😂😂1

The Arduino programming language (.ino) is so easy to understand and learn
But trying to make the equivalent in raspberry pi whether it's in c or python is just not as elegant as Arduino :(((8 -
Netbeans, it is time you, and I, had a little talk. While I understand you can have your little hissie-fits from time to time, what happened today was nothing short of a tantrum. I saved you once, and how do you repay me? You commit suicide, thats how. All I want to do is go to a class I want to work in. This is completely unacceptable behaviour, and I will be leaving you for a raspberry pi.
Sincerely
Yudothis Mcnetwork -
I'm probably getting Raspberry Pi 3 b+ this Xmas. What are some basic things to learn about it before I start using it? Are there any good beginners guides? I programmed Arduinos, so I kinda understand hardware, but software seems different than on Arduino.15
-
Linux has been around since back when dinosaurs punched holes in cards, but for some reason it still takes a few hours of googling and error debugging to do something as basic as connect to a wpa2-enterprise wifi network.
What the fuck? Where's the "connect to any standard work or school wifi network" command line utility distributed with all os flavors? Why can't I just put in a username and password and be done with it instead of sudo editing networking adapter configuration files manually?3 -
Got a couple of Raspberry Pi (Pies?) lying around.
What’s the coolest thing you have used a Pi for?20 -

Bought a hdmi to vga converter for my raspi, it worked flawlessly.
Feeling extremely blessed and grateful.1 -
Had some problems with my Raspberry Pi (connected via SSH). Decided to restart it. Now it refuses connection. And I don't have physical access to it at the moment.
Fuck. This. Shit.2 -
Yay to Raspberry Pi for making it possible for disadvantaged kids to begin programming for less than we pay for a mid priced restaurant dinner.1
-
This is incredibly interesting. How the frikkin-frik did the WiFi and Bluetooth die on my Raspberry Pi 3. Yes, I realize they work in tandem but how does something like this just die after just sitting around and performing light duty tasks for just a few months.
Reinstalled Rasbpain 2 times, nothing. USB WiFi dingle works great.
Not really a rant but I wonder how shit like this happens.
The Pi is in a case away from my cats, in a temperature controlled environment and adorned with the official power adapter.
Things that make you go hmmmmmmm. -
Does anyone know a single-board computer like e.g. the raspberry pi that features a physical on-board audio input as well as an output?
I know that GPIO-header-boards like e.g. the hifiberry or WolframAudio (which seems somewhat deprecated by now) exist. I could probably also alternate to an USB-soundcard, but I'm curious whether someone might know a more compact solution.5 -
How much is your max up-time on raspberry pi?
Can it survive being on all the time? The board seems not made out of premium stuff3 -

So last week I got my second 3D printer. I have done a few prints with it and this weekend I wanted to connect it to an Octoprint instance on my Raspberry Pi. Yesterday everything went great, got some plugins installed, changed all settings within octopi, connected it to my network and this morning I thought let's connect it to my printer and try to print something with it. But everytime I executed my gcode it gave an error about the heated bed not being able to heat up. Even though I did see all communication between the printer and octopi, on both ends.
I've disassembled the build plate to see what could be causing the heating issue. Did not see anything. Strange...
I assembled the whole thing again and then turned on the printer and tried printing again. Hmm, now it does work, why? Me thinking a bit and then realizing that before I didn't hit the power switch on the printer and apparently the Pi gave enough power through USB to turn on the display and do basic logic like doing beeps on touches and changing variables on the screen. The worst thing is that octoprint gave me warnings about low voltage on the Pi even though I was using the official Raspberry Pi power adapter...2 -
Hm.. yeah, I will try something with my raspberry today.
*5 hours later*
I am still struggling with the wifi connection, ended up at a chinese website looking for a solution...2 -
Finally got my wall up to my desk in whiteboard. 4' by 8' sheets cut to fit the whole wall with a 1/8" clearance at the top. Ignore the raspberry pi, I have to set it up this way because I have no USB network adapter or long enough Ethernet cable. There should have been a magic mirror where the box is but on that specific spot in the wall the studs are only 13 1/2" instead of 14" like they should be...3

Is this normal for Raspbian installed with NOOBS for Rpi 3b+? The clock speed is correct, but ARM7 certainly isn't. Ri 3b+ certainly uses ARM8. Why does this happen?
(Also, I'm SSH the Rpi with my computer)7 -
I set up my Raspberry Pi 3 B+ to be a git server and Web server!! It’s not a meant for performance just my own personal enjoyment :)1
-
Waiting for a new package to be installed on my raspberry pi takes a long time because of my poor internet connection :( But it is totally worth the long waiting time though!
-
Just got my new RPi 3+ and about to set up Pi-hole
Soo excited 😀😀

What is the coolest Raspberry pi project you have ever done?
Mine:
Turned my rpi3 into a live video streaming device (streaming from USB camera to Web server) also keeping records of the last 30 days.6 -
Ok so I am in this robotics course, we meet every 5 weeks from 8 to 15:30 to work on our projects. It's really nice because I can basically do what I want all day and don't have school! Fuck yeah... The only downside is that there are a lot of wannabe scientists who think they know everything about physics and computer science.
However the actualy reason I am writing this is to ask you for project ideas. I would like to do something with a raspberry pi but I can't come up with any ideas that I would like to do. Also making it should cost me less than 100€
(I already have a pi so I wouldn't have to pay for that).
So, any ideas? :)1 -
Guest-user: finished my angular js 3 days course. Next have to start learning how to write API's using angular. Any heads-up?

Can't install Flutter in Raspberry Pi feels bad man.
I just want to do so much using this small machine. -
To be honest the exact bug I don't remember. I do recall that it had something stupid I had been trying to fix to get nodejs working on a raspberry pi. I finally figured it out and managed to get a simple rest server going. After hours of trying to fix what might now seem insignificant, I was not only relieved that I got it working, but also thrilled that I kept at it and managed to fix it.

About to learn the world of Linux with my raspberry pi. Seems like I have ridden fail2ban into an un-removable nor fixable state. Fml 🙈4

URG!
I cannot think about a title, so just story:
in my position as multi headed chimera one of my ongoing task is it to dedust old excel sheets, processes and other super inefficient relics that steal time. Mostly i solve those with some tiny vba scripts, bigger vba scripts or a tiny java applications. usually that takes a few hours or maybe two days, depending on what i think is necessary.
the current task at hand is for our (physical) production, work time is noted on a sheet of paper and later given to the production head. Who then proceeds to type it all in excel to do his thing. The guy is starved of time by a huuge margin.
So, crafty kangaroo that i am i think: a barcode scanner, some raspberry pis with touchscreens and some mediocre php/mysql/javascript will make our worries go away. of course this will be a longer task but there is no need to have it done immidiatly. So crafted a working prototype, presented it in the weekly company meeting and got it "greenlighted".
The other day our CEO-like guy was ranting that nothing in this company gets ever done and that people wasting their time with useless projects and named my project among them.
I dont get humans. First he gives thumbs up for this, knowing that it will probably take me 100 hours or so to create in a working manner but later he calls it "a waste of time?" I presented the use (reducing expensive mantime, paper waste and room for fudgery) and yet he calls it useless? (well, his point was that there are other problems (which are out of my reach anyway))
they guy normally is pretty nice and has an ear for problems, but when it comes to higher computer stuff (>excel) he really struggles.
:/
i really like my side project, gives me room to flex some muscles and test stuff. Also playing with raspberry pis on worktime.
On a sidenote, anyone ever tried raspi mesh networks and knows where i get working >10 inch capacitive touch screens? -
If you would have a cluster made of 10 RPi, what would you do? I'm looking for fun project to make and I'm willing to learn new things.7
-
Can you tell about your experience using a different distro on a Raspberry Pi (3B) as the official Raspbian distro ?4
-
And this is how it starts. I bought a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, quite some time ago. Plain board, just the board and a case. Why? Well, I have no idea. I always wanted one for some reason... and finally got one.
I got a good sd card for it, and flashed raspbian and... now what? What should I do with this?
*Looks up "Cool RPi projects"*
*Nah, I already have a NAS... No, wouldn't really use a media center... play games?*
*Well, let me just install sshd and come back to it later.*
Today, I run pi-hole, jekyll, node, gitd, a ton of other things that ends with d... I am even considering buying an extra one (maybe two).
Now I'm really afraid of what would happen if I give in to the urge of buying sensors and add-on boards.2 -
I fucking hate laud people!!!
OMG you are like fucking 20cm from your friend and I can hear every fucking thing from across a 250 people room.
And that mother fking laughing is so annoying...I don't give a flying duck if your software is bugged you wrote that code shut up and solve it.
I'm trying to concentrate because there is an exam in 1,5h3 -

There is no joy in life
So I finally managed to set up networking on my 3D printer's raspberry pi: now it can connect to my phone's hotspot or to my uni's wifi network, depending on which is available.
Then I set up OpenVPN, using a remote server as a middleman so I can connect to the printer remotely and start/stop/monitor prints from anywhere.
Everything works great, except for one thing: whenever the Pi connects to the uni's network first, OpenVPN fails to start and connect to my server, rendering the printer unavailable (unless I use an ethernet cable, but that's not a viable operation since I need to lift the printer, and it's heavy).
The only for it to work as intended is to either:
a) keep my hotspot active (which kinda defeats the point), or
b) let it connect to my hotspot first (so that OpenVPN can start properly) and then turn off the hotspot, allowing the printer to reconnect to the uni's wifi and reconnect to my vpn.
Why won't things just work the way they're supposed to? 😭10 -
FINALLY GOT HASSBIAN TO WORK!
Holy mother of fuck that was frustrating! Needed an external wireless card for it to work for some reason. But it works!9 -
I recently got into nodejs .. set up a server...
I wanna know if is it worth it to buy a raspberry pi 3 to host my web server.. so i can show my projects to my friends or even clients.
If you have a raspberry pi.. what do you use it for? 🤔6 -
Yeah, we *COULD* do AWS for the home (and homebrew as well) RPC program server... or I could get a Raspberry Pi 3B+ for the house. I mean... it'd be cheaper and easier to access.
(Low-res screenshot warning, too.)3 -
How powerful are Raspberries for Bitcoin mining when you are using like a hundred or more?
I am just curious if it is actually worth it or is the electricity bill higher?6 -
A whole day yo set up an ethereum node on a raspberry pi zero... No mining. No wallet. I'm loosing it, people.

I was doing stuff in my room, when I slipped on my hand and landed on my knees. I look up, and I see my Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins puncturing my hand.
Fast-forward couple of hours, I decided to post a picture of it (it wasn't bleeding or anything) on Twitter. 2 seconds pass, and my account got suspended.
I have 2 simcards: one for calls, one for unlimited data.
Twitter is trying to call me to verify the account, but I have my data phone number in the profile.

This heat brings out the worst in me.
I seriously considered turning all my tech off, including my raspberry pi running pi hole.
Luckily I came back to my senses...
So I attached a little weather board to the raspberry pi to find out what temperatures I have inside.
27 C° in here ain´t that bad in comparison to outside... -
So I'm not much for Linux, but I'll admit. It's a pretty damn solid environment, especially for programmers.
Since my main computer can't afford to have Linux on it, I decided to start working on making the Raspberry Pi handheld notebook. But after I added up the price for all of the components, it's almost three hundred dollars.
Personally, I would love to have a mini computer everywhere I go. A Chromebook is ok. But I guess you need to take into consideration that it is NOT ment for programming. I have found several IDE's and found none of them have a debugger or a way to execute my code.
I did some thinking and I'm starting to wonder if it is worth it.
It's a hand held computer with ubuntu on it. What's the worse that can happen? I don't solder the battery correctly and the whole thing explodes in my hands? Yeah that's pretty likely. Another reason I look at getting it is because there is so much fucking theft at my school it's hard to believe we don't have armed gunmen at every corner since everyone is always sober or high as shit.
Having an 11.6 inch Chromebook also puts me at risk of getting mugged, because who the fuck wouldn't want to try and pawn a laptop for drug money? At least with a handheld I could keep it in my pocket where I know it'll be safe.
What do you guys think?
Should I build this little thing or keep my current Chromebook but try to keep it safe?4 -
What would it take to connect two Raspberry Pi's together via Ethernet ports? I want to make a low latency network connection between them, for Retropie Netplay.
I have a background in Python and some Linux, but I'm not well versed in raspi's.
I imagine that it would be limited to 100mb/s if I used raspberry pi zeros with adapters. And I would probably need an router since they aren't setup to be both hosts with the default setup?2 -
Not a rant, of course, because life is amazing but I have a question.
Any of you guys and gals heading to Cambridge for PiWars (21 - 22 April)?
piwars.org
My wife and I will there helping out and possibly even judging the robots.
Apparently there is even a place to have daytime pints nearby.
You fucks should come and say hi + it's freaking Cambridge...place is dope AF.2 -
questions for those hard core lazy geeks, I'd like to try out raspberry pi. what's the most crazy use cases in you mind but yet no way to find time to do it? if I get rid of my laziness, I may do it, no promises😜17
-
Damn it's hard to alter code, on a big (side)project, that is pretty shitty... And it too big to start over.. :/
I'm just gonna run with it and rewrite the damn app piece by piece as I am writing new features..
It's by the way a project I kinda quit half a year ago or so. Now it's coming back., but better. :)1 -
Finally after hours, I am able to run openjfx with jdk11 on raspberry pi. Suggest me something to make with it!7

I've got two raspberry pi's that I bought for setting up two different VPNs. I'm using pivpn.
One works resiliently, whereas the other, after couple of days, just stops working (the connection times out while connecting)!
They're on different routers, but the 'faulty' one works and then suddenly stops. This makes me thinking that there's a problem with the router.
I didn't give enough details of course, I just want your opinion on what could be the cause (I know this is not SO xD)11 -
I've build a gaming station with a raspberry pi for a supermarket. I was running a quiz i also created with red blinking lights for false and green blinking lights right answers. Featured by cool 8-bit retro gaming sound and score printing to win a small prize if you answered everything correctly. It was so much fun building it and testing it in the office 😁

So I'm interested in building a Raspberry Pi stack at home to continue securing and adding my smart home capabilities, 👍
Have ideas for 2/3 but what else could I look to add?
1. Pi. Hole with cloudflared argo proxy for all DNS
2. Home Automation server
3. IPS / IDS like Bro or snort? Or firewall like pfsense?
4. Log server with Splunk agent from other pi's and router....
5. What else?
Ideas in the comments -
Got a note saying that the raspberry pi, a colleague sent to me, has arrived. I immediately went to the post but the person responsible for the packages just walked by me saw I was ending and just looked at me while sipping from his coffee and walking away. Without saying a darn thing. And I was on time 20 minutes before they are supposed to close 😒😑

I recently made my first open source project and would appreciate any feedback I can get for it.
It's a pretty small program to kind of permanently change the cpu governor of a raspberry pi (so it's kind of niche but I struggled a few times with it).

Guys I really need some help. If anyone has done I2C on Android things or can give me some pointers while I wait for a logic analyser I would really appreciate it. Even an upvote on the question (the Stack Overflow question, not this post) would be helpful: https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/...

!Rant - birthday gift 🎂
3 days ago was my birthday and my girlfriend still has to buy me a gift, but she doesn't know what to buy. Now the problem is that I don't know either.
I'd like to start programming something related to IoT and maybe learn a bit more of C/C++ (I guess they could be useful to know), so I'm asking you, what should I (she) buy? Arduino or Raspberry PI 3? Is there a kit of sensors I can buy? I accept any suggestion!
Thank you 🙂13 -
The world would be much more perfect if Jenkins released images for ARM architectures (Raspberry Pi), so that noobs DevOps wannabes like me could play around with that 😭2

I don't know what to think about this.
Postgres' jsonb on a raspberry like SBC is still much faster than mongodb on an 8 core x86.

I am using a Raspberry Pi with CUPS and a USB to LPT adapter to enable one of my customers to still print on an old HP DesignJet.
HP dropped support for this printer with Windows 7. Of course the generic HP PS driver with Windows 10 works - but only via CUPS not directly from Windows. Windows claims that the printer is not compatible.
What's wrong with this world?1 -

You know how I broke my NAS yesterday? Well I fixed most of the functionality and made a video so other people could do it the same way. It's a short video that has subpar editing 😂. (I posted this a little earlier but I said the same thing twice) here's the link https://youtu.be/QIQ1lqqh3Fg

Discontinuing my raspberry pi as a gitlab server (I have sorted a new one for myself) and I'm trying to figure out what to do next with it.
I've been toying with the idea of making a smart mirror since my room doesn't have a mirror anyway, does anyone have any other ideas? :)3 -
I set up two of my raspberry pis in the last days to contribute for the SETI@home project and post the status of their tasks hourly to twitter.
Nr. 3 will follow today! -
I'm working on a project which monitors streaming videos from several Rasp Pi devices wirelessly. Should packet loss occur, the bitrate is reduced remotely by the central computer. (Packet loss is inevitable as wireless devices will compete for wireless bandwidth.)
To demonstrate my work I asked for a wireless WI-FI router rather than bringing one in from home. I wish I hadn't bothered... -
I want to create a browser based Application Hub for my RasPi Media Center.
Users should be able to add Applications as command (or maybe even choose from the available .desktop files).
Developing this as web application allows me to use it on the pi directly as well as on other devices in the network (for instance my phone). -
So today was going to be the Sunday when I finally connected my smart TV though my raspberry pi to access my network and have it connect to the internet.
My TV is 6 years old, so it doesn't have built in wireless, it does not recognize normal Wifi dongles so you have to buy a LG special one for ~120$ to get hat to work, so my previos solution: screw that, one chromecast + 1 osmc raspberry pi3 and I can do more than what the software build in the TV could do.
But my wife really wanted to be able to play netflix directly on the TV without using her phone so I thought:
If I connect my TV via LAN cable to my raspberry pi it should be able to forward traffic via the built in wireless on the raspberry and be able to have internet connection.
OK, its Sunday, my wife it out, I haven't done anything with iptables in the last 5+ years but I have google and should be able to figure it out eventually:) time to start this home improvement project!!!
OK, lets just check online if there is someone else who had similar idea as a place to start.
... quick google search:
Hmm, in your OSMC, go to teathering, "wifi to ethernet" and enable.
I try it and it works!
5 min and one short ethernet cable was all that were required.
It feels like I cheated and won the game without any effort, and what should I now do with the rest of the day? -
All I want to do is build a robot. ROS is slow as crap on a raspi when you're trying to do SLAM. The chassis isn't big enough for a second raspi, and I can't print a bigger electronics tray until the end of my week off.
Also, Ubuntu just doesn't want to work right on my Surface. Emulation too slow.
So much for building cool things on vacation. -
Aside from DevRant, what resources are available to pitch an idea in the hopes of recruiting a few developers for a side-project?4

Q).How does one try to understand how or what a programme is in a third world country with no basis of proper infrastructure?
Apart from using raspberry pi which not only requires a person to help yiu understand it but cost a lot.......Something that Completes the circle , from bundling the the hardware with seamless software out of the box and for the fraction of the cost of a raspberry pi

Ive got a weird issue with my raspberry pi script that doesn't let me type anything into the command line after the script runs.
I should explain I'm trying to write a script for retropie to load games from a script and to exit the current game from a script.
Anyone have any experience?4 -
Hey guys,
Just a simple question: I've got 2 raspberry pi's, and I use them only for VPN + PiHole at the moment. Do you have any idea of what I could implement? Maybe a Flask web app?1 -
Is it just me or DOES RASPBIAN TAKE A FUCKING SHITLOAD OF TIME TO WRITE? WHEN THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO INSTALL OPENCV NOW? I FUCKING HAVE CLASS TOMORROW WHICH IS NOW TECHNICALLY TODAY!3
