So my friend just got a new laptop and she never used a Linux based OS before,so I recommended it to her as she is also a CS under grad student,so I thought she might find it useful and interesting to try it out on her own ..This was her rant14
Spent 6 hours today trying to figure out why the CSS got all jacked up on a site right before launch.
Turns out, the new college grad who went to school for front end development doesn't know how to specify elements at all.
They made all their edits using the broadest selectors possible, sometimes at the tag level.
Having never looked at the site or mock-ups I had no idea what it was supposed to look like so I spent a lot of time waiting for people to tell me whether things were fixed, and telling what else was broke.
Good thing their college degree means they make 20% more than me.12
Indian web dev companies suck ( for developers )
when I finished 3 year grad program in computer application here in my country (India), I thought life's gonna be fun working as a developer. Oh boy, I was so wrong.
I started out working for a small service based IT company, followed by 2 more. I realized really quickly that they're nothing short of a scam. If your company's only agenda to somehow survive in the market and showing no signs of growth in 8 fucking years, then I'm sorry you're working for scamsters.
Now I'm not saying that all of them are alike. But most of them sorta are.
They don't give a shit about quality, not one bit. Quality means no money in the short run. And they haven't been able to develop any strategy to deal with that. Hence, no growth.
They promise 100 things on their website but only provide shitty services in 10.
There is no pair programming, no code review, no code quality check, no architect, no database designer. They won't give you extra time to write test cases. They use git as a storage device.
They don't put their developers (especially the ones who are learning) under any sort of managed development framework to ensure smooth work.
At the end of the day, their main objective is to somehow NOT deliver a project but finish a milestone and make money out of it.
After cashing out for a milestone, they want you to put your current project on hold and start working on a new project until you have like 10-15 projects in the pipeline and you're severely overwhelmed and you just wanna fucking QUIT.
They would say YES to literally every fucking thing, only to disappoint the client later.
I can't believe someone in the US, or UK thought it'd be a good idea to approach these companies
for their brand new app ideas. They're so fucked.
They're rarely finishing any project.

After months and months of slaving away, I quit my start-up job and feel completely amazing- here's what happened:
Met a classmate in grad school and he talked about starting his own company and he had full funding and etc. After graduation, moved to the new city where the job was located.
There were all these promises of us being co-workers and working on cool things and many other promises made. Soon after starting the job, most of these promises we're just smoke and mirrors.
Started working day in day out. Worked from 8am-9pm most days and worked on weekends too. Treated me like a I was a dog, talked down to me, gave unrealistic deadlines, pressured me with attitude and threats of losing my job. Hell, they thought they were the smartest person to touch the earth basically- example being that they mixed jQuery with VueJS in our Django template.....who the F*** does that. Another thing being that they had issues with me soft deleting records since they wanted them completely hard deleted and we had gotten into a giant argument about that fml.
What led to me leaving the job was that I had gotten sick one of the weeks, and I still showed up to work. Each day I was gradually getting sicker and sicker. Still tried my best to get work done. Saturday morning I get the most passive aggressive and bitchy text from my co-worker. "if you don't complete blah blah blah by Monday, we are going to have issues. Then on Monday you will work on blah blah blah". They blew the fuse with me. They would always punish me for being sick or taking a vacation. I'm not a dog, not a machine, I'm a f****** person. Went into his office when the work week started and gave my resignation on the spot and felt like it was the best decision I've ever made.
Now I just feel like a giant toxic cloud has disappeared from my life. I did walk away with so much experience and knowledge but now I just feel extremely burnt out from programming. Is this what I even wanna do anymore?
Few lessons I learned along the way:
1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
2. Free lunches aren't worth it
3. Unlimited PTO doesn't really mean unlimited- there's always stipulations
4. Start-up life isnt as cool as they say- don't take TV portrayals as the real thing
5. Your mental health is extremely important
6. It's okay to admit to yourself that you're burnt out
7. Take a break
8. STARTUPS ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE
This is just my experience and what I learned, so telling my story. Phew, feels so good to get that off my chest8
I just got pissed off when someone on my team asked me how to start a web server on port 8080 (needed for network port testing)
I check the port get 404. 🤔🤔🤔
Spend half an hour explaining to them about ports and how there's already a week server running... And that 404 is a HTTP Status code.
I'm pretty sure she works on our webapp and maybe even REST APIs...
New grad but still.... Not recognizing a 404?
Maybe those pretty 404 pages these days make the realizing that it's a fucking web server error response harder....4
So, I'm the only developer in a marketing firm. I was asked to develop the company website. The deadline was within a month. A full on CMS. When I was interviewed I told them that I'm more fluent in back-end development rather than UI design etc. So the company's designer started designing the website. Incomplete designs were given to me one week before the due date. I'm a fresh grad so I'm relatively new. So I used a website builder knowing that I can't code the whole CMS within a week. I asked them which they gave approval to knowing it was $16 a month.
I started making it using webflow. 2 pages in, I asked them to pay for the subscription because webflow allows 2-3 pages for the free version. When the time to pay came, they were like, "wow, $16? That's a lot every month for just a website". Keep in mind, it's not that they don't have the money. Just cheap. This was like 5 days before the deadline and they said it's too expensive and asked me to code everything by myself. And gave an extension for a few months.
I said okay and started development. I said we would still need to spend on a cloud instance for deployment which would be like $6 monthly. My manager asked me is there a way to not pay monthly and pay like $100 and get one for lifetime. I facepalmed so hard. I tried explaining to him cloud-server costs are either monthly/yearly or pay-per-use basis. He told me maybe because I'm new I don't know and go to do some research on it. I researched and the only solution was to buy a server which costs $100++ monthly. I sent him the costs in a document which he did not even bother to read.
That was back in November last year. Fast forward to February. I've coded the website thrice. The design keeps changing every week. The design is still not complete. And they are saying I'm not eligible for a promotion because the website is still not done. It pisses me the fuck off. It's not my fault it's not done. The designers haven't done the design, the manager can't decide on shit. I'm just here because it's my first job out of uni and I thought it might be a good experience, but honestly right now the way they are treating me it pisses me off.5
I started off in a MNC company as a junior developer. I entered with candy glasses.
I didn't expect to win the lottery. Of getting abuse by superior.
I stayed for a year, at the project. Constantly being belittled by this team lead. It was awful i enter as a fresh grad. All the new tech were so new and scary at that point.
During my time there, i constantly think that developer is not my stuff.
Ultimately i reach the state of burnout. I reached out to the manager and broke down in his office.
I actually told the manager. "I hate coding"
I remember staying up to 4am just complete a piece of program. To be ready to be push to production the next day. My team lead just come screaming at me saying there is bug.
Upon receiving that message via skype. I broke, tears flow down my eyes.
After which i reach a state of burn out. I start to reach out to external parties for help to get me out of there.
Now i am recovered from the burn out. I am curious of the technology that were utilized in that project. I literally face palm. After understanding the technology it isn't so hard after all. I just didn't gear myself up with the tech.
I still do enjoy working on code.3
This is my first one guys. So about 1 year I finished my university. I started looking for jobs before that and found a job 3 months before my graduation. It was a web dev job. To tell you a bit about myself, I am guy who is very passionate about coding in general an I usually do lot's of projects in my free time just because I like it. Started doing code when I was very young. Anyway the idea is that I know how to code properly. So I got into this job even if I came from a game dev background. It was my first real dev job apart from some freelance stuff that I did. I got the job for £20k which at that time seemed enough considering the fact that I had little to no experience in the web field apart form basic html , js and php. And I mean very basic. The dev team was me and another guy who at the time I thought he is very knowledgeable. As soon as I start, I get thrown into the 'lion' pit with upper management having no idea about development and how it's done (they still don't). So I have to learn all about web dev on my own. Long story short, I find about frameworks like vue, react etc for the front end and stuff like Laravel and Symfony for the back end. I am a fast learner so after a month or so I was able to efficiently work with vue and laravel. I use them separately (laravel as a REST API). I implemented these 2 in every new project and when vue 3 came out I created new projects using only that in combination with TS. So here I am one and a half year later, mastered everything I could about these 2 , and still on my base salary of 20k as the company 'does not have money' to pay me more. Well last week I made them a big surprise by sending them my resignation letter. I got a job as a lead developer in another company paying me almost double with less responsibilities as I would be working on the front end only and not have to care about any dev-ops or server stuff. They were so surprised and they want me to do 'freelance' for them as I am the only one who knows their core systems. They even gone as far as posting job adverts for people coming from the game industry hoping they will find someone like me haha. I am curious about other's opinion about why would a company pay their only good employee still the starting salary? And are they blind and not realize that the are gonna lose a lot by me leaving? Also the pinnacle of stupidity comes when they want to hire a grad student to work on complex projects. I know some of the projects I've created are complex at least on the font end side and a grad will just loose his mind if he has never worked on web dev. What are your thoughts on this? As a side note do you think 37k is a good salary in the UK after 1.5 years in the industry? ( I mean I have many years of experience coding but apparently no one cares about that)6
There are too many things to get started in I don't know what field to choose.
There are so many technologies listed on job descriptions and it feels like I need to know them all.
Most of them are a huge reach expecting a new grad to have experience with.
How the hell am I meant to get a new job in Edinburgh/Glasgow so I can learn React/Angular/Vue when no-one will hire someone without experience in those frameworks?!
I was in 2 roles back to back and in that time, every single Front End Development role now available in the market requires commercial experience in React/Angular/Vue in order to proceed.
Even the 18k Grad/Junior Development roles require commercial experience in some sort of JS Framework yet I'm certainly not a Grad/Junior.
HOW DOES ANYONE USE IT COMMERCIALLY IF THEY'VE GOT NO EXPERIENCE.
For the record, I'm a Front End Developer with 3 Years of experience with personal study experience in React.2
1. Teach DS and Algos. Not basics but advanced data structures and the ones that are recently published.
2. DBMS should show core underlying concepts of how queries are executed. Also, what data structures are used in new tech.
3. Teach linkers, compliers and things like JIT. Parsers and how languages have implemented X features.
4. Focus on concept instead of languages. My school has a grad course for R and Java. (I can get that thing from YouTube !!)
5. Focus a little on software engineering design pattern.
6. It's a crime to let a developer graduate if he doesn't know GIT or any version control. Plus, give extra credits for students contributing to open source. Tell them if they submit a PR you get good grades. If that PR gets merged bonus (straight A may be ?)
7. Teach some design pattern and how industry write code. I am taking up a talk at school to explain SOLID design pattern.
Mostly make them build software!
Make them write code!
Make them automate their homeworks!
Make them an educated and employable student.!1

so yea, ive been emailing japanese professors to take me in as their grad student. but theyre not accepting new international students for 2021 AY maybe because of covid.
this is sad, i need to be there next year. but things arent going well.
my plan B is to become a research fellow at my current uni after i graduate next year, get some research published and fortify my arsenal for 2022 academic year.1
!rant advice needed
I have an interview at a company this week who work in PHP, magento, angular js, swift and sometimes c#. Sounds quite good for a new grad with one year of experience in PHP and front end.
The problem is the salary is 20-22k. My friends are looking in London and the ones who ha e secured roles are 36k and 40k. They are roughly the same level of developers as me.
So what to do? Probably turn it down? I don't know what o should expect but I was hoping for around 30k. I need the money for personal reasons and 22k doesn't seem like a lot for a first class computer science graduate with a year and a half industry experience. I could be wrong?7
I am a third year computer science student and I'm interested to see how professionals think I stack up against grads they have worked with straight from uni.
I am reasonable at PHP and MySQL. Currently I am studying node.js and building an api that mashes up data from other APIs to build a new service. I'm also working on a C# Microsoft framework bespoke website. I know git to a reasonable level - branches, merges, rollbacks and all that jazz.
I am also studying development architectures to try and be more useful.
Point to note I'll probably graduate first class (80%+) from a mid range uni.

A new grad software engineer here working for a big company. Mid year evaluation coming up. How do I ask my direct manager for a raise (which happens 6 months after that). I've been in the team for 5 months now. I know I should talk about my contributions but I'm not exactly sure how to put that into perspective given that we follow a Kanban strategy and it's just 'tasks' as opposed to 'big projects'2
Is it good to join a startup paying average after it's seed fund orr should I join a regular company paying slightly above average?
