Mam: Hey can I ask you a question about Facebook?
Me: (Christ give me strength) ... sure whats up?
Mam: You know when you get a notification and you click on it and see what someone uploaded?
Me: ... you are not on Facebook, you can't be getting notifications
Mam: well I do. Is it possible to...
Me: No hang on a second, it is 110% not possible for this to happen. Something else is going on that you think is a notification.
Mam: You know when you are on, and you see a message like "12 new notifications"
Me: on? on what? this is happening on your phone is it? Can I see?
Mam: No its on my laptop at home.
Me: ... you have an old laptop with an old windows, you can't get notifications on it.
Mam: OH FOR GOD SAKE! ... you know when you are in your emails and it says "12 new notifications"?
Me: ... right so we are talking about EMAILS about unread notifications and not getting notifications on your phone. So you have an old account then that you don't use?
Mam: Yeah I don't know the password to it, haven't logged in, in years.
Me: of course
Mam: Right anyway. When I get one and click on it, lets say its about you, can you see me reading your notifications?
Me: ..... you can't not read my notifications.
Mam: uh, can you see me reading your emails then smart arse?
Me: ... can't do that either.
Mam: So what the hell am I doing then?
Me: You are reading a post someone uploaded, which you got alerted to from an email.
Mam: Right, can you tell when I've read your POST then?!?!?!
Me: no
Mam: was that so hard?
Me: ... yep7 -
First (working) attempts at writing a proxy that rewrites live requests from the devrant app, right now it only rewrites all notifications to be unread
Though the first attempt that finally works is built with mitmproxy and it's add-on scripting, plan is to get that stuff work with e.g. goproxy instead37 -
Why is whatsapp just AIDS?!
The privacy thing is big but let's take a look at the app.
It's the only messenger app I've ever used that forces you to save incoming images to your gallery if you want to see them, like wtf?
The UI looks like shit and it's kinda hard to understand from a UX perspective, for example read receipts which Messenger does beautifully. Facebook owns WhatsApp so A it's not really a better choice than fb messenger and B it basically has a shit quality application compared to Messenger. The messaging experience in sketchy Chinese dating apps is better.
Also it basically hacks your phone. It turns on notifications and permissions by itself even when I explicitly turned them off, and sends me notifications for muted conversations.
Speaking of notificatikns. Every time I get 1 notification, notifications from every single chat even an unread messages from 3 years ago gets sent to my phone.
It guzzles battery like a monster.
And they have basically formed a cult in the indian community, so now everyone thinks its the best and no one uses anything else because "it's so convenient" which it's NOT. It has a terrible interface, and the only thing I like about it is the fact that it being so shit gives me an excuse to uninstall it and ignore all the fucking spam on there.
Honestly, the app needs to die ASAP because it is frankly the shittiest of shittiest messaging applications.5 -
Finally had the time to finish the notification filter, also made the download instructions much simpler than before
Had to remove the unread notification dots, because else I simply didn't have enough space and everything else just didn't seem right
The script also solves the issue where the notifications don't get marked as read once clicked and adds an "unread" tab

@dfox
Feature request:
If(When you are in the app and go to notifications, group the notifications for the same rant.

Automatically sort unread notifications to the top)

New JoyRant TestFlight build 11:
* Posting Rants
* Improved Notifications Category selection UI with unread indicators (screenshot attached)
Posting this rant from JoyRant right now 😄
The app is now in a state what I consider to be the first major milestone.
There are still features missing (see github https://github.com/WilhelmOks/...) but the most important and most frequently used stuff is done.
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...3 -
I wanted to join the dark side, so I did, now I can't tell the difference between read and unread notifications. Am I thick?6

JoyRant new version:
* delete rant
* selectable text in rants and comments
* proper badge on Notifications tab, showing number of unread notifications!
* mention suggestions for comments!
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
Here is a screenshot of the mention suggestions above the keyboard:
It collects all the user names from the comments, except for the user of the rant’s author and the logged in user.
Have fun 😄
I think posting rants will be next.12 -
Finally got SwiftUIRant into TestFlight:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
This first version supports rant feed, notifications, ++/—, and commenting, essentially.
Posting rants and uploading images will be in the next major version.
I will also add proper notification badges later. For now it’s just text. A star (*) indicates unread notification categories.
I’m curious for your feedback 😄

Probably a bug @dfox
I've been providing my feedbacks through the Feedback menu. However, I'm writing this issue in here just to know if I'm alone.

Issue
-------
Platform: iOS
When I clear the notifications and refresh the timeline for new rants, the notification badge shows a number. But there is no unread notification when I go to Notify. This has been occurring multiple times now.9 -
I'm wondering when all the super amazing cloud apps will finally be able to sync notifications between devices. I mean this "problem" is solved for decades with unread emails etc., but somehow companies that get billions of dollars shoved into their arse can't seem to figure out that I don't want to receive all 57 notifications of the past week a second time whenever I turn on my tablet's wifi.
One might think that setting a fucking boolean flag in some database is not that hard when your service can stream 4k video to millions of people, but apparently I was mistaken. -
I've noticed that on the web view of devRant, the notification counter updates in real time.
So I opened up the Inspect Element and checked for any polling related code (Socket.io) or something.
What I found was that this endpoint is called on a loop -> https://devrant.com/api/devrant/...
And the response format contains ->
{
"success": true,
"rants": [],
"settings": {
"notif_state": -1,
"notif_token": ""
},
"set": "64d68f5a7acd4",
"wrw": 376,
"dpp": 0,
"num_notifs": 0,
"unread": {
"total": 0
}
}
I assume `num_notifs` is the notification counter.
So, my question is is this practice good for implementing real time notifications?3 -
Why does devRant show I have 6 unread notifications?
I cleared the cache. Even downloaded the mobile app to check whether it was only a problem with the web-app.
No, that number is still there. The mobile app claims it is the comments section. I scrolled down to 2019 ( no, I haven't been all that active ) and still no unread notifications.
Why didn't you think of putting up an 'unread tab' when you were creating all those tabs on the mobile app? Please add an unread tab 🙏
Also, the read and unread markers in the dark mode could have a little more darker contrast difference in the dark mode. I don't know about light mode, because I don't use it ( but I could check once I get notifications from this rant; I'm turning light mode on for a brief while to check this )
I haven't had unread-anxiety before, but I guess I have it now ( not really though )23 -
I'm digging the new GH notifications UI (beta):
https://github.com/notifications/...
It might not (yet) be available to you.
What's nice is that notifications can now be shown regardless of (un)read state (but you can still only show unread notifs). This means that you can read all notifications and not lose track of everything that you have read. Just mark notifications as 'done' when you're done, but until them just leave them in the list and/or save them for later. The UI is also responsive to the browser window, which is much better than before, because a lot of context and content now is shown! And it is possible to handle issues and PRs from the notification screen itself, which basically adds some additional UI elements to the regular issue/PR screens.
And earlier this week the GH Android app went into beta too: https://play.google.com/apps/...
It's a good week to be a GH user!
