So Stroustrup tells the White House: Fuck you, C++ isn't C (paraphrased):

Go get em Bjarne!13 -
Lesson learned: if you're going to derive a class in c++, make sure to declare a virtual destructor on the base class!
I just fixed (one of...) the massive memory leaks in my damn project.
Pictured: the strings in a derived class actually getting freed!20 -
Just found this HTTP response.

My CTO told the COO and CEO i'd be finished SOC2 compliance by the end of December... On December 14th.
It takes 3 months to do the audit, let alone all the actual work. I hadn't even started yet.
He was fired shortly after that.6 -
For those of you who still refuse to accept that safety features in languages are useful and important:
https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2023/...
The author of curl himself admits that this security flaw could have been prevented if he had used a memory safe language.
I‘m not blaming the author for making this mistake and I‘m not saying that curl should be rewritten in another language.
I just want to rub this in the faces of people who argue that "bugs are always the developer’s fault, therefore it’s perfectly fine to keep using unsafe languages"4 -
Just testing the waters here and seeing what I read online has any basis to this:
Jenkins is the WordPress of CI/CD tools

As a legal thing at work I need to have someone verify my citizenship by filling out a form for my I-9. They ask the person for their title. My husband can’t be serious, so he put that his title is “Keeper of the Swans”.
Here’s hoping I don’t have an awkward convo with legal over the validity of verification by a man claiming the title “Keeper of the Swans”
In his _defense_, the form didn’t let him leave “Title” blank.9 -
Im so tired of shitting. I shit too much. If only i could unwrap the bottom part of my body like a robot so i can put the asshole part to sit on the toilet 24/7 while i sit (or float) on the chair and code. Shits (literally) wasting my time by shitting. Tomorrows an interview and I'll probably shit so so much from all the bullshit I'll have to listen6

Today I learned that in Unix/Linux or most command lines, when user is asked to choose an option as [Y/n], the uppercase one signifies the default.
I thought they made it a little harder as a security feature to prevent accidental keypress, and I’m shift+Y ing this for the last eight freaking years!!!!! Every time!17 -
IHateForALiving: I created a trigger on the model, every time you perform a save it should fire an event. You're calling the same methods I am, and the trigger is NOT firing. Are you sure we are running in the same process?
TheTeamLeader: I'm manually starting this whole piece of code in your same process, there must be something wrong on your side if it's not working
90 minutes of debugging later
TheTeamLeader: there's the thing! Your hooks are registered in a separate process, of course they are not firing
IHateForALiving:rant and that explains everything i'm seeing as target practice for knife throwing your mother used your forehead2 -
What the hell happened to devRant?
So we have this person who is digging up old posts, harassing people (@LotsOfCaffeine here, me as well, probably more) and some fucking how is getting 14 updoots while obviously being, or at least portraying themselves as a misogynistic hater of everyone and everything. What the actual hell is up with devRant? How are there FOURTEEN OTHER PELPLE who AGREE WITH THIS PERSON. How many active users are we here? I'm sure 14 users is a pretty significant percentage of the active user base.
People, I feel bad for this person. I've been a bit of a dick to them and so have many more, but what the hell happened to devRant, the place where you went to rant about stupid colleagues and bosses, share funny coding stories and other bulshittery? We're turning into fucking 4chan with politics, sexism and racism being the main story line here. I dont fucking get it. I'm on the brink of just leaving. I'm so fucking tired of this shit...35 -
Do people put their OSS projects on their CV? I'm trying to put together a decent graduate CV and the non-tech people around me insist that I should put "the research projects I spend so much time on" on it, but I'm pretty sure that as long as there's a Github link the rows full of jargon combined with meaningless names that would be a project list do more harm than good.3

Have the ranters mellowed out in years? I rejoined devRant after 3 years and i see normal rants. Where the fuckety fuck rants at? Where the anger at? Where puke of abusive words at? Whereeee?10

I hate with a passion Code Review sessions in Pull Requests. It takes days to get approved especially when you have as Lead tech someone with 3 years of experience that rejects PR because doesn't like how I named the variable and also if that person is different time zone.
In my previous company we used to have 30 minutes session if we had PRs and we would go over it.3 -
we switched from GitHub to BitBucket and I saw my colleague try to run `bit status` because they thought GitHub = git so BitBucket = bit.
Had a good chuckle seeing that.9 -
This SocketIO method emits a message to all users who have joined the same room (conversation ID).
This works if it's a 1-to-1 chat or a group chat with infinite users in the group.
The thing that bothers me is this enhanced for loop. It loops through ALL currently connected users.
- If theres 10 users, sure no big deal
- if theres 1000 users, it has to loop 1000 times
- for N users it loops N times
What if N = 10000? God what if it's 100,000 or 1,000,000.
Imagine having to loop that many times every time you want to send just 1 message.
OR wait i just realized. This shit grabs ALL users -- but within the room ID. Right? Am i trippin balls here
Im now confused (excuse my confusion i coded till 3am last night and im still fried). Is my logic flawed? Have i written this piece of code with good performance or not?38 -
Our company opened a job offer for a new teammember in our team.
Same skills and expertise as mine, but the minimum salary offered is more than I earn.
I decided to just apply for basically my own job and in a matter of 10 minutes I got a message by HR, asking why I applied and that this is basically a position in my team. After I explained the reasons, I got a message from my boss 5 minutes later, who wants to talk to me live tommorow about that.
Gotta say, fastest response and invitation I ever got on an application.25 -
For every verb you put in your 'REST' api url, a puppy dies
Bitches be saying they're using REST and don't have a fucking clue what it means or what the principles are5 -
Men of DevRant, do you think it's OK to try and pick up women on LinkedIn?
A guy, who claimed to see me on Bumble, message me on LinkedIn about "wanting to get to know me". My rarely used Bumble profile doesn't have my family name, nor my real job title or my workplace. Which means the dude also had to indulge in some high-level stalking to get to my LinkedIn profile.
I've seen some cute guys on LinkedIn, that if we had a pleasant interaction in a conference for example, I would totally ask them out. But it never crossed my mind to even try and chat them up on a professional platform.
Am I too conservative or is this just inappropriate?111
